Read an interactive picture book with your child on TumbleBooks.

Play a game of peak-a-boo or clap and sing along to a favorite song or rhyme.

Read a board book together. Follow along while your child turns the pages.

Paint the sidewalk, driveway, or porch with water! Dip a paintbrush or a rag into water and use it to create fun designs.

Take a walk around your neighborhood or try out a trail in the area. Point out any animals you pass along the way.

Read a book about animals. What animals can you find in the pictures?

What noises do they make?

Ages 4 - 7 Find a new book to read or listen to using OverDrive.

Read a book to an animal – to your pet, if you have one, or to a favorite stuffed animal.

Find a storytime (or more) by your favorite Children’s staff member on PPLDTV on YouTube.

Ages 8 - 12 Read a book to someone else, either older or younger than you.

Want to hear authors read you their books? Check out PBS Books Storytime.

Tell someone all about a book you just finished reading. What did you like about the book? What didn’t you like?

If you could change the ending, how would you make the book end?

Ages 13 - 18 Read a book from the Summer Adventure Booklist.

Read in a format new to you (graphic novels, audiobooks, Manga, etc.).

Read a book by or about a refugee or immigrant (like last year’s All Pikes Peak Reads book, Nowhere Boy).

Splash in puddles after it rains or in the bathtub at home.

Find some treasures in nature, such as leaves, flowers, or sticks, and press them into some playdough. Pull them out and check out the impressions. Do they look like the objects you pressed into the playdough?

Go on a sensory walk indoors. Can you find something that’s smooth? Rough?

Bumpy? Soft? Shiny? Cold? Identifying an item’s texture builds vocabulary in a fun way.

Ages 4 - 7

Try your hand at jump rope. What rhymes can you repeat while jumping?

Draw a picture of a wild animal. How would you tame it? What would you teach it to do?

Paint rocks so they look like animals. Can you hide them outside for others to find?

Create a dinosaur terrarium for your favorite dinosaur toys. Use sand, rocks, plants, grass – you could even use some slime!

Ages 8 - 12 Build a rock or fairy garden using items found out in nature.

Make letters to hang on your wall out of twigs and yarn or twine.

Write or draw a picture about a special family memory and share it with your family.

Ages 4 - 7

Take turns hiding and seeking a special toy. Having trouble? Provide hints or call out “Warm! Warmer!” as they get closer.

Go on a nature walk. Collect anything you like on the ground that came from a plant.

When you get home, make a collage with your collection.

Ages 8 - 12 Create your own signature dance to a favorite song. You can keep it to yourself... or teach your buddies. Looking for some music? Check out our Freegal playlist just for kids.

Grab some glow sticks, play your favorite songs, and throw a dance party in the dark!

Do a random act of kindness for someone else.

Surprise your grown-ups with a clean room—any room! If you choose your bedroom, clean it first and rearrange the furniture in a fresh, new way. It might inspire some new creative thinking!

Write letters to members of the military!

Spend at least an hour making something (this could be anything: food, artwork, woodworking projects, a science experiment, etc.).

Surprise Guests It’s always worth keeping your eyes open when you visit any PPLD location because we’ve heard tales, and seen photographic proof, of unusual visitors all year long. Rockrimmon Library has been visited by two different hermit crabs. Calhan Library has a neighborhood cat who prowls the area. Deer saunter by Palmer Lake and Manitou Springs libraries on the regular. And goats have shown up in the High Prairie Library drive-through (though perhaps they were just being COVID-19 safe).

Boo Boo the Storytime Bear OK, we admit this is a stretch, but we’ve got one more critter to mention: Calhan Library’s black bear Boo Boo. Boo Boo may be a hand-puppet bear, but, unlike our other animal friends, he’s been a guest in PPLD’s Toddler Time videos, which can be found on their YouTube channel, and he has his own pen pal program. Write Boo Boo a letter, or draw him a picture, and send it to P.O. Box 104, Calhan, CO 80808; include your name and mailing address, and Boo Boo will write you back.

Get to Know Our Neighbor to the West, Manitou Springs

In order to fully understand how Colorado Springs came to be, make a trip to Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site (rockledgeranch. com), an educational living history farm and museum. Whether or not you visit on one of the nonprofit’s Living History Program days when the buildings are open and docents are hard at work, there’s plenty to see. Imagine and wonder about life in the Pikes Peak region as you walk from exhibit to exhibit, beginning with a late-1700s area occupied by the Ute people, and ending with original homes that were built by Springs’ founder General William Jackson Palmer.

Experience Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum While the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum (cspm.org) isn’t quite as old as the city itself, both its founding as a collecting institution (1896) and the building in which it resides (built in 1903) are darn close. Formerly the El Paso County Courthouse, the location houses both permanent and temporary exhibits, culled from a 60,000-object collection; a fully restored Division 1 courtroom; and a 1913 Otis cast-iron birdcage elevator. This year, a special “COS@150” exhibit examines the 150 years of the city through 150 objects.

The history of Colorado Springs, and General Palmer, is very much tied up with that of Manitou Springs — as Palmer cofounded it as a resort town, with incorporation happening in 1876.

In 2020, the city’s newest attraction — the United States Olympic & Paralympic Museum (usopm.org), a 60,000-square-foot facility that had been under construction since 2017 — opened with pandemicappropriate fanfare.
