NIST Releases AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF 1.0)
CONFERENCES, MEETINGS & WEBINARS
On 26 January, 2023, the U.S. National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) released version 1.0 of the AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF 1.0). As the culmination of over a year’s work and the subject of a collaborative, workshop-driven process, AI RMF 1.0 represents a voluntary approach to better manage risks to individuals, organizations, and society associated with artificial intelligence (AI). A goal of the framework is to improve the ability to incorporate trustworthiness considerations into the design, development, use, and evaluation of AI products, services, and systems.
The 48-page framework addresses the following topics:
• Framing Risk: AI risk management offers a path to minimize potential negative impacts of AI systems, such as threats to civil liberties and rights, while also providing opportunities to maximize positive impacts. Addressing, documenting, and managing AI risks and potential negative impacts effectively can lead to more trustworthy AI systems.
