In our minds, a book dedicated to the KDM guys is almost overdue at this point, so here is our way of sticking it to the Han. Further inside PASMAG’s KDM special, you’ll find two heavy-hitters: one from Hyundai and one from Kia. The Hyundai is the Genesis Coupe that takes up residence on our cover, and just like the club the car belongs to, this build is definitely Next Level. From the chassis-mount wing and rear seat delete, to the widebody and spot-on fitment, this build is one to look up to if you’re at all interested in tackling the versatile platform. The Kia is an Optima of another well-known team, Team Hybrid, and the owner has pushed the four-door to exude sportiness in looks, as well as performance. This is a car that checks all the boxes and leaves nothing untouched. We also spoke to the wizards over at SXTH Element Engineering about their process of developing parts for KDM platforms. Essentially designing and producing OEM-plus performance enhancing parts via 3D scanning, it was

FOR MANY OF US, FAST AND FURIOUS IS THE MOVIE THAT BROUGHT US INTO THE TUNER LIFESTYLE. With the first film in 2001 there was an explosion of interest in Nos, modified engines, and cool paint jobs. As the franchise grew, so did the stunning visuals, crazy chases, and over-the-top cars. To celebrate the enduring Fast and Furious movie franchise, Universal Orlando re-
cently launched a brand new ride called "Fast & Furious: Supercharged." As might be expected, we’ve been anxiously awaiting the ride’s debut since it was first announced. After all, what better way to spread the love of modified cars to a wider audience than in the tourism capital of America? If you follow us on our social
channels you may have seen some of the early ride details, including the Fast & Furious store, which is remarkably complete with film merchandise and even a build-your-own modified toy car option. You may also have noticed that we were lucky enough to attend the ride launch at the start of May.

TO CELEBRATE THE ENDURING FAST & FURIOUS MOVIE FRANCHISE, UNIVERSAL ORLANDO RECENTLY LAUNCHED A BRAND NEW RIDE CALLED "FAST & FURIOUS: SUPERCHARGED."
To debut the ride, Universal Orlando threw what can only be described as an all-out party, complete with stunt vehicles, flames, and A-list actors. Between the food, stunts, dancers, and lights, we were able to try out the new ride. The ride itself is not what many FF fans might expect. It does not have riders in small cars, and it does not allow for any customization of the ride vehicle. It does however, allow riders to enter the FF world and see a chase from a whole new perspective. Using incredibly advanced screen technology, riders are drawn into a film sequence that sees them dodging bullets, wild cars, and large jumps. Even with the thrilling ride, it’s likely that many FF super fans will be most excited about the ride queue. With an attention to detail that is awe-inspiring, the Universal park’s team created the Toretto garage, complete with the family’s BBQ table and chain link fences. In addition to the nostalgic photos, there are 12 cars from the movies and even two cars specifically designed by the movie team for the Orlando ride. The queue also sets up a unique story to draw riders into the action before the ride, which features Tej Parker (Ludacris) and Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster). Between the amazing queue and the adrenaline-packed ride, there’s no question that a trip to Universal Orlando should be in your plans!

ometimes a particular vehicle platform just speaks to us, and that was certainly the case for Michael Torino. The moment he saw the Scion FR-S make its debut, something about the car was calling to him. When it came time to pick up a car to start building upon, the 2014 Scion FR-S was destined to be his first choice. Having helped his father on his previous build, Torino went into his FR-S project with a bit of experience, and a lot of inspiration under his belt. His FR-S was the first car he really built, so it was

@tunerevo important for him to take his time and get everything right. Getting the right wheel spec for his dimensions was a new science for Torino, so he got some help from friends in order to get it just right. Originally building the car for shows, Torino went with a Varis widebody

kit, carbon fiber hood, Spec-D headlights, Valenti tail lights, custom graphics, and more, aiming to transform the exterior of the car to a neck-breaking rolling spectacle. Now that he’s spent some time on the show circuit, he says that he feels obligated to track it
– it is an 86 after all. His favorite modification has become the engine and its performance, even with just a GReddy air intake and some UEL headers. It’s only a matter of time before Torino goes even further with the engine and takes it through its paces on the track. As his tastes continue to change, so will his car, so we’ll be keeping an eye on this FR-S to see where it ends up. Torino leaves aspiring enthusiasts with some parting words for their upcoming builds: “Build it how you imagine it in your head, and make it unique!” Wise words.

ack when Jake Harn was a junior in high school, his buddy let him know that his neighbor had a 2003 Nissan 350Z sitting in his driveway for a while, untouched. Harn took a trip over there to ask the owner about it, who informed him that he only bought the Z from a friend for its audio system. Initially, the neighbor wasn’t willing to sell the car, but Harn left him his number and told him to give him a call if he changed his mind. Two weeks later, he got the message that set him down the path to modifica-

tion. “Ever since that day I got it home, I’ve always been doing something to it,” Harn reminisces, thinking back to the early stages of changing things up. He spent a bit of time getting the car road-worthy again, and from there it was off to the paint booth. With a fresh set of wheels and tires to complement the new paint, it was time to address the engine. Working closely with his dad, the duo revived the car that had been left to gather dust just months prior. “I was never in a hurry to finish it,” he tells us. “Yes, I wanted it

done, but I wasn’t eager to rush perfection.” That was, until he picked up a widebody kit. Harn and his father started working on the widebody on June 6th, knowing that his dad was scheduled to leave on a trip on June 18th. After many late nights and even some allnighters, they finished the widebody and put his wheels back on just half an hour before his father left for his flight. “It started as an $800 car,” Harn laughs, looking back on the barely-together car he bought from a driveway. “My dad and I turned it into a $12,000 car! Anything is possible.” Harn’s story from driveway to show floor with the help of his father is a true testament to what is possible if you take the time to learn and commit to the project. WHEN A TRUSTED NAME ENTRENCHED IN RADAR DETECTORS, CB RADIOS, AND POWER INVERTERS MAKE THEIR FORAY INTO THE WORLD OF DASH CAMS, IT’S BEST TO PAY ATTENTION – ESPECIALLY WHEN THAT NAME IS COBRA. COBRA’S DASH SERIES DASH CAMS ARE HERE AND WORK ALONGSIDE THEIR ESTABLISHED IRADAR DRIVER ALERT APP AND DRIVE HD PLAYBACK SOFTWARE, WITH THE EXTRA TWIST OF THROWING A SECONDARY CAMERA INTO THE MIX. WHEN THE BOX FOR THE SYSTEM ARRIVED ON MY DESK, I WAS EXCITED TO DIG INTO THE DASH 2316D AND EXPLORE ALL OF ITS FEATURES.

At first blush, the packaging of the DASH 2316D is sleek and informative. A window that wraps the side of the box shows off the lenses of the dual cameras, and a small sidebar ticks off the major highlights of the unit. On the back, these highlights are explained in greater detail. When I got the packaging open, the cameras were neatly packed into their own enclosure, while the manuals, cables, and other accessories were stored in a separate box. Inside, I found a front camera (CAM 1), a rear camera (CAM 2), a 12-volt charger, two microUSB cables (one regular sized, and the other 10-feet long), a Y-splitter cable, and an optical extender cable for CAM 2. The thing I was most excited about was the fact that a micro-SD card was included, and that it was 16 GB! Normally, dash cams don’t come with an SD card for recording, so an extra trip to the store or Amazon to grab a sizable one is needed – not this time though. Definitely a big plus. Both cameras share a modern design, with CAM 1 having a display screen on the back with four navigation buttons and a bright blue “Emergency Recording” button surrounding it, while CAM 2 has a mount for the windshield only, but features an adjustable ratchet inside to tilt the camera up and down with a secure click. A slider rail on top of CAM 1 allows the locking swivel mount to be slid onto the top, which, like the builtin mount on CAM 2, is topped with 3M adhesive to ensure nothing is coming off while you’re driving. CAM 1 features 1080p recording resolution, while CAM 2 captures 720p. The tri-fold manual inside is laid out with helpful pictures on both sides, making setup look less daunting. There’s also mention of the software

SETUP
Referring to the manual’s graphics, I connected the Y-splitter cable into CAM 1’s micro-USB port, and then followed the USB side of the splitter with the 10-foot USB cable and 12-volt charger. The other side of the splitter was joined with the optical extender cable for CAM 2, since I would be mounting the second camera out the back window of my car. Alternatively, you can also skip the extender cable and mount the camera facing you and your passenger(s), or skip CAM 2 altogether and only use the front camera, which the box tells me unlocks “Super HD” resolution. With everything connected,

there are some long lengths of cable (especially with CAM 2 mounted in the back), so if you’re unlike me and not just installing this system for review, I’d advise you install it up inside the headliner or get someone to professionally hide it away for daily ease of use. After inserting the supplied micro-SD card in CAM 1, mounting the cameras in the front and rear, tucking away some extra lengths of cable, and plugging in the charger to my car’s 12-volt outlet, I was good to go. I also downloaded the iRadar app on my phone to pair with the system, which happens as easily as connecting to the “Drive HD” option from your available Bluetooth devices on your phone with the iRadar app open.
PERFORMANCE
I had a dinner with a friend of mine who lives a bit away from my place the evening of my review, and since the drive consists of country roads,

city streets, and even some highway driving, I figured this would be perfect for testing. When I turned on the car, the front camera chimed and the screen sprung to life just seconds after. The display screen showed both the front and rear views from the cameras, and the grey Bluetooth symbol changed to white as another chime let me know that CAM 1 had connected to the iRadar app on my phone. I chose to have both views present on the screen as I drove, but you can choose between both, or only front or back. I also enabled the microphone to see what the DASH 2316D’s audio recording capabilities were like, and then set off. While driving, I was concerned about camera shake. My car is on coilovers, which are set fairly stiff, so I was worried that some extra jostling from the ride would make the footage a little rough. Upon review in the Drive HD playback software though, I was happy to

see that things were smooth and clear. The Drive HD software pairs up the footage captured from both cameras and stitches them together. You can view either one by itself, but my favourite way to watch was with CAM 2’s footage in a smaller screen on top of CAM 1’s; kind of like a rear-view mirror. Although I didn’t receive any alerts about speed traps or stoplight cameras, the iRadar app was busy the whole time I drove. In a pullout tab on the right side of the playback screen was all my driving data: how far I went, the route I took, what my speed was, and bumps in rougher roads were recorded with the G-sensor – all matched up perfectly with the video as I watched. The microphone also worked well, picking up a little engine noise from outside, as well as music and most sounds inside. Good thing I wasn’t singing!

VERDICT
With solid recording capabilities, speed and camera trap warnings, plus the ease of use of a system that lets you set it once and then forget it, the only thing I can see you worrying about with the DASH 2316D are the road's little surprises – but at least you'll have those recorded. There are even lane departure and collision warnings that can be enabled for extra security on your travels. If you’re looking for a dash cam that adds peace of mind to your daily commute or road trip, I’d dash for a fully-featured Cobra unit like the 2316D. Have you ever felt like you were in a rut? Like the same old day-in, day-out routine is starting to wear you out? For Luigi Saullo, that rut was the same old modified Honda. Having spent most of his teenage years doing the standard modifications to his old Hondas in the garage, Saullo eventually got bored. When he expressed his boredom to one of his co-workers at PartSource, he was met with some advice that stuck. “Find a new platform – something different.” It didn’t take long before he did just that.

aside the naysayers who said things like “it’s just a Hyundai,” Saullo found himself admiring the new Hyundai Genesis coupe. As an affordable, sporty, and RWD platform loaded with features, it was hard not to take notice. “I knew this would be a platform that was going to grow and develop in the next five-plus years,” he tells us. “I wanted to see where it went, and have fun building something different.”
We know now that Saullo’s prediction was on point. Aftermarket support for the Genesis coupe platform hit the industry like a tidal wave in the wake of all the new Genesis owners looking to modify something new, but his initial struggles early on in the build came from the lack of aftermarket support in the early stages, leading him to some custom fabrication before the aftermarket caught up to his pace. The custom fabricated work, combined with the aftermarket offerings that came years after, work together to create something truly unique. Growing up watching SPEED channel and automotive DIY television shows, the affinity for custom fabrication work started young for Saullo. As information
began to stick in his head, his cousin introduced him to hobby RC cars. The modular nature of the RC cars, with their miniature coilovers, driveshafts, and gas engines, was the final catalyst. Saullo was hooked for life. After building a pair of Hondas – the very same ones he grew bored of over time – the groundwork had been laid for a promising rise to new projects. The day his Genesis came home, he was already looking towards its future. “I think the biggest challenge to modifying the Genesis Coupe was the fact that there was little to no aftermarket support for the first few years of owning the vehicle. Many of the parts had to be custom made or fabricated to work,” he says, thinking back to the hours spent brainstorming and researching modification methods. “To compare to the Honda platforms I was used to, you couldn’t just walk into a performance shop, or look in some catalogue to buy every upgrade imaginable. You wanted engine work done? Fabricate it yourself. Want to make a front lip, or exterior upgrade? Time to learn to fiberglass. Nothing came easy, and you had to think out of the box.”

and GReddy Type S BOV. As the aftermarket began to catch up, Saullo took advantage, sourcing more parts to complete his show-worthy aesthetic. An HKS carbon fiber engine cover was the final step in making his engine bay a real show-stopping aspect of the build.
Once he was happy with the power output (285 whp/320 lb-ft, in case you’re wondering), it was time to bring the rest of the car’s appearance up to speed. The car has been through several iterations, but seems to have settled – for now at least – on a stunning combination of AutoFlex’s Rame Grey with Cognac Copper accents. The combo looks wildly aggressive over Canada’s first REMAKE Genesis coupe widebody kit with a chassis-mounted wing from Street Faction. Modernizing his 2010 coupe is a set of redesigned 2013 Genesis taillights, as well as custom painted headlights with demon eyes. Chasing that perfect show car stance, Saullo set his sights on air suspension. Tucking the lips of those massive 20-inch VIP Modular VX210s right to the widebody fender flares is a combination

Suravarapu has quite the track record with modified vehicles, as an active member of Team Hybrid for over a decade and builder of the first six-speed manual Accord with two doors and two turbos (a fantastic project that we featured back in 2010), there was never any question that the Optima would be worked over, inside and out. “I just wanted to make the car my own and I can’t leave any car I own stock,” he admits. “Like other builders, I want to make something that’s basically ‘cool,’ but clean and quality because those elements are timeless. I wanted to keep it sporty and not have an identity crisis. If someone sees it they know it’s sporty, not asking ‘Is it sporty or is it VIP? What’s it trying to be?’” Not long after getting the Optima signed over, a SEMA spot was offered to Suravarapu, which lit the fire to get the car together quickly – we’re talking four months fast, from lowering springs and exhaust to full-on show car. And with a platform that’s not very supported from an aftermarket

such enthusiast is Sunny Suravarapu, who was in the market for something new back in 2014. Deciding between an Infiniti G37 or a convertible BMW 335i, but not able to find one in the spec he wanted that fit his budget, he started looking outside the box. That’s when he spotted an ad for a 2013 Kia Optima that he couldn’t ignore. The last 2013 left at the dealer, which had already been lowered and had an aftermarket exhaust added to make it that much more enticing, left the lot and came home with Suravarapu, where he would transform it further.

Since 2000, the Kia Optima (also the Kia Magentis, depending on where you live) has become so much more than a spin-off of the Hyundai Sonata. All the way up until the 2010 model year, the Optima has been a cheaper, underwhelming platform compared to the other entry-level luxury cars that it desperately tried to compete against in North America, but with a European injection from ex Volkswagen Auto Group designer Peter Schreyer, Kia’s four-door would finally become a viable player. This move also introduced the Korean sedan to enthusiasts, who are always hungry for a new platform to build upon.

A fast car should have a fast color, too, so Suravarapu enlisted DTM Autobody for three stages of a Ferrari shade of red – Rosso Scuderia from BASF R-M. This red dress drapes over a full Korean K5styled kit from Ikon Motorsports, as well as a Seibon carbon fiber trunk and vented hood, showing just a hint of carbon on the openings of the latter. Other additions of carbon fiber, like the Concept 3 diffuser and SoCal Garage Works fender inserts, grille, and mirror covers add to the sportiness that Suravarapu aims for his Optima to exude. Add to that the modern twist that the custom-built Living Light angel eye headlights and blacked out front turn signal area provide, and this Kia is fit to turn all kinds of heads on the show floor. While the look from the outside is great, the interior really shines as well. A Plus Upholstery has done up the headliner, door inserts, and sun visors in diamond-stitched leather, which is repeated on the Katzkin leather seat covers to complete the look. Carbon fiber, like the exterior, is a major player here as well, covering much of the dash and trimming the AEM AFR and boost gauges, while the stitched leather makes its way into the trunk to dress up the air and audio install that Kreative Audio & Tint knocked out of the park. Two 12-inch Phoenix Gold Elite2 subwoofers fire into the trunk space, right over the Elite2 and Elite4 amplifiers nestled under plexiglass and rimmed with red LEDs, while the red air tank gets the same showcase treatment.
aftermarket exhaust switched to Ark Performance, even splurging for titanium tips, plus a better-flowing down-pipe and cat from 845 Motorsports that equate to newfound sound and performance from the directly-injected Theta II engine. To further bolster that kick, 845 Motorsports also modified the stock turbo and added their upgraded intercooler. Combined with AEM meth injection, more squirt from some 400cc injectors, and a Byetronik tuner mounted with a custom tune from Concept 3, this Kia is uncharacteristically quick. Bringing the Optima down are a set of big brakes from D2, four-piston in the rear and six-piston in the front, which are color-matched to the same gold that takes place on the lips of the 20-inch three-piece Rennen MV-55 wheels on all four corners.

“There aren’t many aftermarket companies making specific parts for the Kia Optima, so many owners will tell you everything needs to be custom,” Suravarapu explains. “I had four months to build the car from stock to full custom before SEMA.
