There was a moment in 2010 that brought the Toyota JZX100 way up in coolness factor, and it was during the fifth round of D1GP at Ebisu. Coming in extra-spicy, Daigo Saito initiates his drift right at the apex of the turn, catching air mid-initiation, and landing his red Toyota Mark II in a full-on drift at full lock.

never seen this jump drift, here’s your homework: watch the 35-second clip of the jump on YouTube, and then immediately watch it seven more times because it’s so rad. For some, this would make the Toyota Mark II or JZX100 platform in general more awesome, but also expose Daigo Saito and his D1 stunts to an international audience. For others, like Ethan, these kinds of shenanigans were something that the four-door-drifting WELD team were known for. wheels that could leave the track and probably place at a car show are what WELD is all about, and that’s what Ethan fell in love with.

“I’ve wanted [a JZX] since I was 17,” explains Ethan. “Daigo Saito and the WELD cars were some major reasons why I got into them.

Most other cars around then were S-Chassis or Corollas, so seeing something so excessive was super, super cool. Once I got more into JDM stuff, I learned of WELD and their fleet of incredible cars.”

The thing is, Ethan’s car has to do dual duty by being up for drifting at the track, and then be good to drive home or do the occaisional road trip, and by looking at those requirements, a Japanese sedan with rear-wheel-drive and a dependable 1JZ-GTE engine seems to fit the bill perfectly.

While S-Chassis were really common in the mid-to-late ‘00s in Japanese drifting, they were also a big part of Ethan’s life.

After getting his modifying start in Hondas and VWs, Ethan went on to own a few of Nissan’s most popular sport compacts – seven in fact. Some highlights include an S13 with a 1JZ swap, SR20powered hatch and convertible

When he eventually did come across the perfect Mark II, Ethan made sure that the 1JZ would be up to task, no matter the circumstances. The JZX100 was handed over to Leask Spec, headed by a buddy of Ethan’s, to get a refreshed turbo 1J in the engine bay. The stock turbo has been upgraded to a 5858 Precision charger, and paired up with a large front-mount R33 Skyline GT-R intercooler, Greddy Type-R blow-off valve, and a dump-tubed Tial 44-mm wastegate, which makes for some insane noise at boost. Ethan also procured a “slug” manifold that needed some working to fit everything around it. For example: the SARD fuel rail didn’t line up at first, so it was fixtured and threaded with locator tabs, and then the AC compressor,

power steering, pump, and oil dipstick didn’t fit, so those were all reworked to fill their roles again. A coolant bleeder tank, complete with swirl pot for air separation, was fabricated and matched up with a modified Koyorad radiator to complete the cooling system once the charge pipes were done.

With an Apexi PowerFC standalone ECU tuned by RS Enthalpy, plus HKS boost control and a Bee*R rev limiter for insurance, this daily driver is capable of 576 reliable rearwheel-horsepower at about 29 psi, which, when put down through a twin-plate OS Giken clutch and two-way Cusco LSD, is more than enough for getting the wheels loose at the track or passing on the highway.

Another thing that Ethan wanted to protect were his aesthetics.

Being friends with the floor is cool and all, but being so low that you damage your kit everytime you leave a parking lot isn’t. Vertex kits don’t come cheap, you know?

To preserve his investments, the Mark II is sitting at just the right height on some Swift-springequipped custom-valved Stance XR1 coilovers. His Advan TCIII wheels tastefully stretch some Kenda Kaiser KR20 tires and hide some serious six-piston GREX calipers behind the front set.

SerialNine front upper and rear lower control arms, toe arms,

traction arms, as well as some one-off front lower control arms and tension rods from Walker Pro Motorsports (another friend of Ethan’s, who also made his turbo piping), tailor in the stance of the Toyota, while a set of C’s Garage steering knuckles and Odyssey Fab subframe reinforcement help the sedan’s sliding capabilities.

“Though it doesn’t look like a WELD car, they’ve definitely shaped my view of what a drift car can be,” Ethan gushes. “Their competition car was damn-near a show car, and I try to keep this car as clean as possible, while using it as much as I can.”

While it doesn’t have the wild outward appearance of a WELD car, the Mark II definitely exudes JDM stylistic vibes. Vertex aero, Ganador mirrors, and Origin trunk and roof spoilers outside, plus the Bride Zeta II seat, Nardi Deep Corn wheel, and straight-out-of-Japan Carrozzeria head unit inside, this JZX is an exercise in how to build a clean and timeless car. And that’s not to say that WELD’s spirit doesn’t exist here – the coil pack cover on the engine, shifter bushing, braided brake lines, and, most recently, the differential bushings have all travelled overseas from the team’s shop to take up residence on Ethan’s car.

What Ethan has built, with some help from some friends, is a wellrounded JDM car that serves as a bit of culture shock to the streets of Texas that it cruises down. It’s not specifically a drift car, and it’s not specifically a highway racer – it’s a daily driver in every sense, especially when part of your seat time includes getting sideways.

This is a Mark II that makes its mark everywhere it goes.

Back in 2015, during the course of 30 days between October and November, a certain automotive camera smashed its funding goal on its Kickstarter page by almost 11 times its $55,000 goal. Pulling in over $600,000 in a month time frame is astounding, but automotive cameras are nothing new – so what is it about Waylens’ Horzion camera that separates it from the rest? Lucky for us at PASMAG, they sent us out a sample unit to see exactly what a “data driven automotive camera” is all about.

A

t first glance, Waylens provides a powerful first impression with some next level packaging. The product is packaged in a space-age-looking cylinder, with the camera visible behind a clear plastic cap. Pinching the orange tabs on the either side of the cap slides the plastic top up and away from the tubular black body, which houses different charging bases and mounts, an OBDII transmitter, a remote-control button, and some seriously long micro USB cord, should you want to install it along your headliner for long journeys or lengthy track days. The top portion screws off to unhouse the Waylens Horizon camera itself.

INSTALLATION IS SUPER SIMPLE. I CONNECTED THE CAMERA TO THE SUCTION CUP MOUNT, AND THEN STUCK IT TO THE CENTER OF MY WINDSHIELD One thing that didn’t pop out of the packaging was an instruction booklet, which left me in a bit of a panic until I realized it’s 2018 and there’s an app for everything. I launched the Play Store (App Store for you iPhone users), searched for Waylens, and sure enough there was a handy app ready to be downloaded. Not only does it give you a “Quick Start” guide to show you how to piece everything together and get it working, but you can also pair your Waylens camera to your phone to edit and share your recordings. All for the low, low price of free. Installation is super simple.

I connected the camera to the suction cup mount, and then stuck it to the center of my windshield (you can mount it wherever you’d like on the windshield, really). You’ll

want to buy a sizeable micro SD card for the camera, as the kit doesn’t come with one. The OBDII transmitter connected to my FRS’s OBDII port, while the remotecontrol button wrapped around the grip on my steering wheel.

Once the car and the Horizon are turned on, the transmitter reads the car’s data from the ECU and pairs it with the camera, giving you readouts on speed, RPM, engine temperature, and boost (if applicable). The Horizon’s internal systems track your location via GPS, and pitch, roll, and g-forces with its on-board nine-axis (three-axis gyro, accelerometer, and magnetometer) sensor.

Waylens has also equipped the camera with dual microphones, so make sure you’re not singing while trying to make a super serious video about how mean your car sounds.

To start, I centered my camera by making the pitch and roll readings to zero degrees, respectively.

Then I took off for a drive. About five minutes down the road from my house are a few country back roads, so I decided to head that way and get a little bit more liberal with the throttle. Once I was at the spot I decided I’d like to start recording, I pressed the button clinging to my steering wheel and the Horizon jumped right into action. I left the camera on the viewfinder while I was driving, but if you want to focus on just one reading while you drive, you can set one of the other readouts to display, though you’ll get all of them once you’re done and have uploaded your video to the app.

I opted out of using the smartphone app and ended up going with the desktop app that Waylens offers from its website, as it was easier, personally, to view and edit from a larger screen. With the program running on my laptop, I imported the video file I wanted, customized which readout layovers I’d like displayed, and chose the type of gauge faces I’d like. Before chopping, I had a file that was over eight minutes,

While recording, I used the standard quality setting to avoid using too much space, but there is a “Super High Definition” option that looks fantastic.

The standard quality is still HD, just not to the same high bitrate as "Super High Definition." The microphones worked well as well, picking up engine and exhaust, plus a bit of my supercharger whine. This is definitely something I’ll be using in the future for cruises during show season and spirited driving sessions with friends.

A show-ready system is something that’s unfortunately overlooked in many builds looking to tackle the show circuit. If you’re chasing some extra points that could make the difference between you going home with or without hardware, beefing up your audio game is a great place to start – and no, you can’t just slap in some new speakers and expect to pick up some ICE love from the judges. Coincidentally, our friends over at LIS Audio just so happened to finish an install on a customer’s Nissan 350Z, and we thought it would be the perfect example of what to shoot for.

WHEN

LIS Audio’s Cameron "Chimpo" Powell and Justice "JAX" Berry first saw Brennen Vail’s “LeBrennan.Z” 350Z, it was up on a lift in his father, Marvin’s, body shop having a custom widebody done-up. After chatting about their goals and vision, which included being a neck-breaker via wood grain, suede, and fiber optics, the LIS guys took the Z33 into their own shop after the widebody was finished and started to work their magic. Chimpo and JAX tell us all about how it went down.

SPEAKER DOOR POD “We chose to omit the rear speakers and add them to the front of the vehicle only. We added two sets of Audio Dynamics 2100 Series component speakers for a full and rich sound that would encompass the entire cabin of the Nissan. The long teardrop shape was agreed upon after rendering the flow of the factory door panel, taking into consideration the components to be mounted and the allowance of space around moving parts. This made for a sleek, yet eccentric, speaker door pod. The door panels were finished off with black and red suede, as well as birch wood on the pod fascia for accent.”

“The main source of media derives from the 10.9-inch iPad Pro with Pandora, Spotify, and iTunes, hosting libraries of content. We needed to integrate the iPad into the system so we built a dock that would allow it to stream music and charge, while being able to slide in-and-out of the dock. The main source unit is a single-DIN Kenwood KMMBT518HD media receiver which is tucked away behind the slider that distributes signal to the Audio Dynamics speaker and subwoofer amplifiers. The entire bezel was wrapped in red suede for a clean finish.”

SOUND DEADENER “During the process of this extensive audio installation we added some much-needed sound deadening. Our primary deadener of choice is HushMat Ultra. We used roughly 120 square-feet of the Ultra sound deadening material to line the interior panels of the vehicle.

We covered the doors, floor, roof, and middle section of the Z33 to compliment the previously covered rear hatch.

Covering the entire cabin of the Z33 made a sizable difference in road and engine sounds.”

UNDERBODY & WHEEL LIGHTING “The Z33 is nothing short of a light show!

On the exterior, we added some complimentary underglow and wheel lighting. We utilized Heise’s 5050 multi-color LED strip lighting and Diamond Audio’s DARGB8A eight-output RGB controller, which is Bluetooth enabled via the EZ LED app. Across the exterior of the Z33, we incorporated a total of nine runs of Heise lighting. The interior lighting is controlled via a toggle switch next to the Air Lift controller. We chose Heise 5050 red LED strip lighting for the interior accent color to play with the already red dash iPad slider and door pods.”

HEADLINER “The headliner originally started out as a light shade of grey, but that changed quickly. We pulled the headliner and had it reupholstered in a deep black suede. Once the new suede had been applied and the adhesive had time to dry, it was time for the fiber optic kit.

The fiber optic kit we constructed into this headliner featured a 100-plus strand count. The headliner lighting kit is controller via IR remote and has hundreds of different color combinations.”

“In the amp rack, we added Audio Dynamics Premium Series 1000.4 and 1200.1 amplifiers, wired up with Stinger OFC zero-gauge wire and 6000 Series RCAs, plus three Shuriken reserve power cells. We added an Xbox One to the amplifier rack as well, which is finished with a birch wood fascia and LED plasma-style accents in the amplifier windows. In the hatch, we built a false floor to hold the KC Kulture air tank and cover the reserve batteries and two compressors mounted in the spare wheel well for the air ride system.”

SUB BOXES “For the sub stage, we decided to use the middle section of the vehicle due to the Air Lift system in the rear hatch. We removed the middle section storage compartment behind the passenger seat and factory subwoofer components located rear of the driver. This left us two vacant spaces for a pair of black-anodized aluminum Audio Dynamics 2100 Series eight-inch woofers. We designed a pair of identical sealed woofer enclosures to fit in the middle section compartments. We finished the enclosure fascia with black carpeting to keep the interior consistent.”

As we get older, our tastes gradually change until we settle into what we’re going to like for the rest of our lives. You could take this as literally as taste in food, like a distaste for tomatoes when you were younger that became a meal staple later in life, or even as taste in fashion, as I’m willing to bet that there aren’t nearly as many princesses and dinosaurs on your clothes now than there were before (not that I’m judging if that’s still the case – good for you).

IN THE

automotive world, which is made up of so many different styles and subgroups, it’s a playground to immerse yourself in to discover which direction you’d like to take your build, and sometimes, it takes a few builds to get to where you want to be. It’s like the best kind of trial and error.

Starting out, Justin Wallace cut his teeth building the usual suspects in the tuning scene, and eventually found his way to a car that he’d go all-in on. His first project was an EG Civic Si, which Wallace describes as “nothing serious,” but it seriously sparked something. The alluring fun factor of rear-wheel-drive came calling from overseas next, as Wallace imported a RHD 180SX from Japan

in 2004. This car would be his first “serious build,” and when it was complete, it caught our attention in 2007 enough for us to warrant setting up a feature in the magazine. Unfortunately, before a single photo could be snapped, the S13 show car was stolen and has since never been recovered.

Reeling from the loss of a car that he’d put his all into, Wallace started a search for a new platform in a different state of mind.

“The goal was to have a daily driver that was all show and all go,” he exclaims. “After the loss of my

That daily driver would end up being a 2000 Lexus GS300. Luxurious leather, power everything, comfort, and quiet – the ideal formula for a workday warrior. At this point, we often hear the same batch of lies at PASMAG from nearly every owner who has just bought a car as a daily; “I was going to keep it stock, maybe change the wheels, and get a tint, but I wasn’t looking to seriously modify it!” Wallace wasn’t lying to himself whatsoever when he picked up his GS, as he planned to swap out the comfort-tuned three-liter inlinesix 2JZ for the less-well-behaved GTE version from the get-go.

If you’re going to rip out a perfectly good engine for another, you may as well get some parts on the new one before you slap it into

the bay. For Wallace, he made sure to toss in Tomei adjustable cam gears, a full suite of Greddy cooling gear, an ARC Super Induction air intake, and some HKS goodies, like their “Defencers.” The GS has two HKS Defencers: Fuel Cut, to raise the factory fuel cut level to increase boost pressure, and Speed Limit, which unlocks the speed restrictions on the 2JZ-GTE to allow for speeds over 112 milesper-hour (180 km/h). This land yacht moves at a quicker pace than before, that’s for sure.

While that all sounds great, Wallace was after a luxury land yacht, so he’s gone around the GS sprinkling LEDs, crystal, chrome, and extra leather wherever it will fit. A prime example of this is the Garson D.A.D VIP gear that takes up residence in the interior, like the custom front table, coaster sets, crystal chains, velvet door curtains, and glittery shift knob.

Draped between the rear seats is a “Wiserhood” banner that displays the words “The Society of Uncompromising Men,” which kind of encompasses VIP as a whole, doesn’t it?

And what kind of a lounge doesn’t have a lounge singer? You may have heard of the one that frequents Wallace’s place – they go by the name “Alpine.” Situated snugly in the trunk, under some plexiglass, are a four-channel and a monoblock amplifier, rimmed by LEDs. This duo powers the twin 12inch Type-R subwoofers on either side of the trunk, as well as the four 5.25-inch Type-R components in the cabin.

“My car has gone through a few different body kits, but there has always been one on my mind,” says Wallace. “It’s super clean looking, highly sought after, and rare. The price tag was the only thing holding me back.”

Eventually though, when you want something enough, your wallet finally caves to the pressure. For Wallace, the pièce de résistance for his GS300 is the Phantom aero kit from Mode Parfume - a fairly rare Japanese aero kit producer.

While the Phantom kit results in a clean and classy look, Wallace has accentuated the lines and flow of the Lexus with custom metal Baby Bear Gangster vented front fenders, a Junction Produce roof spoiler, and a custom carbon fiber diffuser. Of course, no VIP build is complete without the appropriate amount of LED lighting, as evidenced by the black chrome housing headlights that play host to retrofitted Infiniti Q45 projectors and custom-built chasing LED acrylic taillights, while every

“I’ve been into cars even before I could drive,” says Wallace. “Back in the early ‘90s, in my high school years, I would read tuner magazines and just be amazed by how you could take something ordinary and build it to your liking. The only thing that influenced this build

The widebody movement up until now has been largely pushed onto the world from Japan by a few names you might recognize, like Rocket Bunny/Pandem, Liberty Walk, Varis, Ben Sopra, etc. A company that’s made a recent splash in the scene of fenders and flares is Clinched, and you may not know it, but Clinched Flares has its roots in Russia, and they have aimed to do things differently than their Japanese counterparts.

IN 2012

Andrey Kondukhov, owner of a plastics manufacturing company in Russia, was making some plans for his car. With a passion for the aesthetics of widened cars, he was looking into a kit for his own ride, but wasn’t satisfied with the offerings, so he thought that maybe he could design and manufacture a set of flares at the office. From there, Clinched was born. Initially, dealing in flares only, mostly universal, the business took off, but

Kondukhov knew that they could make their mark in the market of full-on application-specific widebody kits. Together with his business partner, and fellow car nut, Fedor Stetskevich, they sketched out the design for their first kit for the XE10 Lexus IS. Targeting a fairly popular car with no existing widebodies turned out to be a great idea because, as Kondukhov puts it, “it all snowballed from there.” Now, Clinched adds kits to their roster every year.

Starting with internal ideas and suggestions, those are paired against market analysis and future predictions to choose what the new platform will be to design a kit for.

Kondukhov and Stetskevich sit down and start sketching – sometimes hand-drawn, and sometimes in Photoshop – and the resulting concept is discussed internally to tweak the design.

WE’RE ALSO BIG FANS OF JAPANESE AUTOMOTIVE CULTURE.”

The resulting final render of the car is then sent out to gauge market interest.

If there are enough owners of the selected platform out there that can make the commitment, the kit moves ahead with production.

Manufacturing takes place in-house, as that’s the facility’s bread and butter, and the kit is produced out of high-quality ABS plastic, which is the same material used in a lot of OEM styling and aero pieces. Certain kits, namely the Mustang, are available in dry carbon fiber as well.

“ABS PLASTIC IS MORE FLEXIBLE, LIGHTER AND SAFER THAN FRP,” SAYS KONDUKHOV. “WE HAVE SUPPLIED QUITE A FEW LOCAL DRIFT TEAMS WHERE OUR PRODUCTS WITHSTOOD SOME HEAVY ABUSE!”

After the baseline concept sketches are done, the design makes its way to 3D modelling, where more tweaks and corrections are made. The final 3D kit is handed off to the engineering department, who overlaps the kit onto a 3D scan of the vehicle, which is done in-house or comes directly from the OEM. “OUR LATEST KIT FOR THE S550 FORD MUSTANG WAS DESIGNED BASED ON THE FILES RECEIVED DIRECTLY FROM FORD MOTOR COMPANY,” EXPLAINS KONDUKHOV.

Because Clinched’s design and manufacturing happens on-location, one may think that if their platform is currently unsupported, they could just ask for a widebody kit to be made for their application. While Clinched is always open to suggestions, Kondukhov had this to say.

“The customer needs to understand a couple of things: A) all tooling costs will be the buyer’s responsibility in case of a limited sales potential platform, and B) we need to like the platform, otherwise there will be limited passion and that will show in the final product,” he says.

In 2017, Clinched had a tremendous year, launching their S550 Mustang kit, which promptly went viral, and having six of their kits on cars at SEMA in their first ever show! That success has prompted Clinched to move forward with a 2018 version of their Mustang design, and start development on a few platforms that they’ve teased to us: a Japanese sports car, an American muscle car, and an Italian exotic.

As an automaker with such a storied history, anyone would be remiss to ignore Porsche’s legendary line-up of vehicles, but it seems like the world has passed over a key player in the 911 lineage: the 996. Between the controversial “fried egg” headlights and horrifying IMS bearing issues, the 996 has unfortunately become the ugly step-child of the 911 family. To those who can look past the stigma, however, they get one of the last affordable 911s with the performance you’d expect of the car – they’re not missing out.

Chau has never owned a Porsche before, but always had a nagging – a nagging that was satiated by an Audi R8 that he outfitted with a Prior Design kit a couple years ago. That itch wouldn’t be left satisfied for long though. Let’s be honest; an R8 is more related to a Lambo, even though Audi and Porsche are technically related under the V.A.G. umbrella. The driving experience of a Germanbuilt flat-six pounding away behind you in one of the best sportscar platforms ever built is the stuff of gearhead legend, and at the end of 2016, everything would finally fall in place for Chau to become a Porsche owner.

In mid-2016, the first images of a 997 Porsche with a slantnose conversion hit social media from Japan. A firm calling themselves “Old & New” and toting the tag line “Something Different” would

remain a viral sensation way beyond the first Old-&-Newequipped Porsche hitting the world stage at Toyo Tires’ booth at SEMA 2016. Modelled after Porsche’s 930 special order program in the ‘80s, where a customer could order a “Flachbau” (“flatnose” or “slantnose”) front end on their new 911, Old & New integrated the design into a full widebody kit that adds the nostalgic tribute to a newer 911 platform. While the rear end of the kit is similar to the widebody kits we see today, the front end is a full fender replacement, louvered, with a vented front bumper that slants down into two enlarged fog lights that act as the 997’s new main light sources. A true blend of old and new.

Upon seeing the blue, slantnosed 997 at SEMA, the hunger for a Porsche returned to Chau, and since many parts are able to be traded between the 997 and 996, theoretically, he could get an older 996 for cheaper and run the same kit. Unfortunately, with the Carrera 4S that Chau would eventually choose, things weren’t that easy.

“The initial platform used for the kit was a 997 C2 narrow-body,” Chau explains. “With a 996 C4S, which is the same width as a Turbo, the kit would give a new feel to something that’s already wider off the shelf, just a generation earlier.”

The “new feel” that Chau describes is a lot of custom work to fit a widebody kit meant for a narrower car onto another platform that’s much wider, much to the chagrin of David Ng at MS Auto Modify Service. Ng completely reworked the front fenders to fit the 996 C4S, adding carbon fiber to the tips of the louvers and

retrofitting the swinging filler door mechanism on the passengerside fender. Fun fact: If you don’t put the extra effort in to retain OEM-like gas cap access, the kit’s instructions say to just screw the fuel door down with four screws, which you’d have to unscrew every time you filled up!

A first-ever on the car, besides being the first in Canada with an Old & New kit and the first 996 equipped with it in North America, is the current wing.

The kit for the 997 comes with a unique swan-neck-styled wing, but between the wing not working on the car and Chau not really feeling the vibe, a custom option was decided upon between Chau and Ng. Reminiscent of some RWB work, a double-scooped 993 GT2 wing was grafted onto the back and lifted high enough to work just right with the bodylines of the widened Porsche. The car came with a Techart spoiler

initially, so Ng built directly off of it, combining the spoiler with the GT2 wing to create something one-of-a-kind.

Inside, Recaro Sportster CS seats serve as a much-needed update to the dated Porsche buckets, and an Agency Power half cage, powdercoated the same green as the calipers for a GT3 feel, plays a staggering contrast off of the black and carbon fiber that takes place over the rest of the interior.

Chau’s Porsche also carries a nickname after his favorite Marvel villain: Ultron. Between the silver color and combination of multiple parts to make one ultimate “being,” we’d say it’s a fitting nametag for this one-off creation.

And there are still more parts to come, with talk of a supercharger and more custom touches being added to the mix in the near future.

“I’m not done with this car,” Chau says, promisingly. “There is still much more to come.”

In a time where “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” has turned into “if it’s broke, just go buy something new and shiny,” it’s pretty great to see more and more enthusiasts in the wheel scene kick that trend and make what was once great, great again for their modern builds. Restoring or retrofitting a wheel to fit your ride can be a great way to remain authentic and still rock a classic design, or stay painstakingly period correct – if that’s what you’re into. With that in mind, we spoke to two guys that are ingrained in the movement of bringing old wheels back to life, and they were nice enough to answer all our questions.

One set turned to two, and two to three; before he knew it, Mo was buying shop space to house his rotating collection. Adding refinishing and rebuilding services to his repertoire, Sensei 6 was born five years ago, and has since become a bit Instagram famous for its examples of beautiful wheel builds with ridiculous amounts of attention to detail applied.

WHAT KINDS OF SERVICES DOES SENSEI 6 OFFER? Besides obviously selling used and new wheels, we also do refinishing, re-lipping, re-barreling, repairing, re-drilling, and numerous amounts

WHAT IS INVOLVED IN UP-SIZING A WHEEL (I.E. A 16-INCH TO A 17- OR 18-INCH)? ARE THERE ANY SAFETY CONCERNS WITH UPSIZING A WHEEL?

of other work. Almost anything wheel related can be done here, especially if they’re three-piece wheels. The only thing we don’t touch here is replica wheels. We even offer consignment services to help you sell your wheels, this ends up working very well for our local customers.

DO CUSTOMERS OFTEN BRING YOU WHEELS TO RESTORE OR REBUILD, OR DO THEY USUALLY SOURCE A SET THROUGH YOU? Both - about half and half. Many people would order a set of used wheels from us and have us build them accordingly to how they envision them to be, whether it’s changing the width, offset, or maybe the finish. In a way, I guess you can say they’re custom tailored to fit our customer’s preference.

Some customers would just bring us their own wheels to have them restored or rebuilt a certain way.

And if they have hard time making an opinionated decision, we’re always here to help.

WHERE DO YOU USUALLY BRING IN YOUR WHEELS FROM? WHAT’S INVOLVED IN THAT? About more than 95-percent of our wheels come straight from Japan via containers. There’s obviously a lot of details on logistics involved.

But we try to bring in what we can based on what our customers' demand. This way, every few months or so we will have an updated inventory.

Without getting too technical, all three-piece wheels that are 17-inch reverse lip (for example) can be converted into an 18-inch step lip. The same goes for 16-inch reverse to 17-inch step, and so on. This requires a new upsized diameter inner barrel and outer lip in its step lip counterpart. A step lip will always increase its reverse lip counterpart to one inch above in total diameter. A 16-inch reverse lip wheel can be made into 18-inch double step lip. If you start with a 17-inch reverse lip, however, it cannot be made into a 17-inch step lip.

Often, the centers will need to be trimmed down to accept the step lip conversion. Some wheels will require more than just these simple tasks, such as welding and other machining work. Like all things, if done correctly, there should not be any safety concerns.

SENSEI 6 DO YOU BELIEVE THERE ARE ANY SAFETY CONCERNS WITH RUNNING AN OLDER SET OF WHEELS? If the wheel is old, there’s a high chance that it has been used many times in the past, which is likely to show damage, like bends and cracks towards the barrel. If that is the case, we would always recommend replacing them with new ones. Centers can also be warped or cracked from road hazards or simply metal fatigue, which can be repaired if they are bent, but cannot be repaired if they’re cracked.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON BRINGING OLD WHEELS BACK TO LIFE OVER BUYING A NEW SET? IS THERE A BIG COST DIFFERENCE? Good question! There’s a common misconception that buying a rebuilt used set of wheels is always going to be cheaper than buying a new set. That is not always the case. Yes, certain simple rebuilds may be cost efficient, but the more complicated the build is, the more expensive it will become since more work is required. With a new set of wheels, everything is set from the very beginning, so sometimes it’s actually cheaper to just order brand new, if they’re still in production.

JB MAF STANDS FOR “JASON BOS MACHINING AND FABRICATION,” AND THE MAN BEHIND THE ONE-PERSON BUSINESS HAS MADE QUITE THE NAME FOR HIMSELF WHEN IT COMES TO CUSTOM WHEEL WORK. What started as a need to make custom parts for his own car transformed into a full-on fabrication service for fellow car enthusiasts. JB MaF isn’t Bos’ nine-to-five, it’s his spare time passion. Some may know him for his crazy hand-shaped metal widebody Golf GTI, while others may have seen his custom threepiece Enkei RPF1s break the internet.

TELL US ABOUT HOW YOU GOT INTO CONVERTING WHEELS TO FIT CARS THEY’RE NOT SUPPOSED TO. WHEN DID THIS ALL START? The whole “wheel modifying” thing began over three years ago when I was in search of the right set of wheels for my project car: a Mark IV Golf GTI widebody. Since then, I’ve been responsible for countless sets of unique wheels that I’ve made compatible to cars that would be otherwise unable to run them. What it really comes down to is math and machining/fabrication principles: Can they fit, and what’s it going to take to make them work?

WHAT SERVICES DO YOU OFFER, OR DO YOU FIND YOURSELF DOING MORE THAN OTHERS? The services that I offer people with respect to wheels specifically include: fill and drill (welding up of old bolt pattern and machining new bolt pattern), which includes five- to four-bolt conversions, or other way around, off-set bolt pattern re-drill, which maintains original pattern and offers a second set of holes, or re-drill to new bolt pattern using large bushing-style inserts. These inserts work great when lug holes on wheel faces are too deep to fill with weld, or when trying to hide the re-drill, bore enlargement, back-face milling to adjust wheel offset to achieve fitment, and custom billet center caps, depending on the wheels. My duties extend beyond that, but these have been my main go-tos for people as of late.
