HONDA’S HYBRID HEROES

The roar of engines bouncing off the rolling hills of Lexington, Ohio, is a familiar symphony for race fans, but this year’s Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio Presented by the 2027 CR-V Hybrid carries a profound sense of milestone achievement. It marks the two-year anniversary of a seismic shift in American open-wheel racing: the 2024 debut of NTT INDYCAR SERIES’ hybrid era on this very same 2.258-mile, 13-turn natural-terrain road course.

At the center of this technological revolution is Kelvin Fu, Vice President of Honda Racing Corporation USA (HRC USA). Responsible for Honda’s North American racing programs— spanning both the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar

Championship and INDYCAR SERIES—Fu works alongside HRC USA President David Salters. Together, they manage the relentless, day-to-day execution of Honda’s motorsport endeavors while mapping out the manufacturer’s future trajectory on the track.

Fu is no stranger to the challenges of high-performance engineering. Joining the organization in 2015, he climbed the ranks by managing chassis design, aerodynamics, and the performance en-

gineering group. By 2020, he was named Director of Programs, before stepping into the Vice President role in 2021. For Fu, the introduction of the hybrid powertrain wasn’t just a regulatory checkbox; it was an essential continuation of Honda’s DNA.

“It’s been important to Honda that we have the hybrid system because it does represent a lot of where we are going as a car company,” Fu explains, looking back at the two-year journey. “When we debuted the IndyCar hybrid in 2024, it was also when the Civic Hybrid was the presenting car. For us, it was a good juxtaposition, introducing the hybrid with what’s a really important technology and platform for Honda overall,

alongside the CR-V, Civic, Prelude and the Accord hybrid systems.”

The racing program provided a unique sandbox.

HRC USA spearheaded the development of the Energy Storage System (ESS) supercapacitor pack, integrating it seamlessly into the existing IndyCar chassis.

“It’s been good from a technology point of view, developing the supercap pack with IndyCar and integrating that into the IndyCar itself,” Fu says. “It’s overall been a very good story that we could tell for Honda and developing new technologies for us.”

HRC USA wasn’t starting entirely from scratch. They had previously built the wild, 800-horsepower Honda CR-V Hybrid track monster known as “The Beast,” which utilized early supercapacitor concepts.

Yet, transitioning that tech into open-wheel machinery required a massive pivot.

To build the ESS packs, Honda partnered with Skeleton Technologies, sending a dedicated engineering team to Germany. Together, they designed the physical architecture required to house the ultra-powerful supercapacitors.

The development of the IndyCar hybrid system also forced an unusual alliance between two bitter track rivals: Honda and Chevrolet. While both manufacturers desperately push to beat each other to the checkered flag every Sunday, they collaborated for the greater good of elevating North America’s premier openwheel championship.

Under the development framework, HRC USA focused on the ESS supercapacitor pack, while General

“It’s been good from a technology point of view, developing the supercap pack with IndyCar and integrating that into the IndyCar itself.”

Motors tackled the Motor Generator Unit (MGU). Because it is a low-voltage system, it runs at incredibly high amperages, throwing up massive engineering hurdles for both sides.

“Even looking ahead to future car iterations, we’re still working together to make sure the series is advancing, because the series growing and getting better is good for both OEMs,” Fu says. “GM was working with EMPEL, developing new technology for the MGU. There’s always unique challenges packaged into race cars, but the nice thing about it was, in the end, we’re just two engineering companies who just wanted to get this done very quickly.

That collaboration was really good. It’s not like we don’t know the guys over there. We understand how they do things, and GM—they’re all racers. We just need to get it done and get it done well.”

While elite sports car racing (IMSA’s LMDh class) and Formula 1 utilize highly automated, computer-controlled hybrid systems, IndyCar took a drastically different approach - one that mirrors the driving dynamics of Honda’s road cars.

In a Honda Accord or Civic Hybrid, the architecture uses two electric motors paired with an ultra-efficient Atkinson-cycle internal combustion engine. On the street, drivers can use steering-wheel paddle shifters to manually alter the level of regenerative braking.

“I do this all the time,” Fu said. “You regen, regen, regen, trying to have the car come to a complete stop without touching the brake, because touching the brake means you’re wasting energy in terms of friction and heat. You try to gamify it and make it fun.”

IndyCar treats its hybrid system with that same interactive spirit. Instead of a computer managing the deployment and harvesting via complex software algorithms, the driver is in total control of the regeneration and the horsepower boost.

“IndyCar is very driver-focused,” Fu emphasizes. “They can do the regen, they can do the boost, they can do basic settings for

when your pedal comes off. The driver is much more involved. That’s what’s fun and cool about the Honda production system, too. They give the driver a chance to get involved in using the system.”

And all of that merges at Mid-Ohio, where the track acts as a home race for thousands of Honda employees that work at the engineering and manufacturing facilities located just down the road.

“We get a lot of associates who come out and get to see IndyCar racing there and the product they design and build out there,” Fu said.

“For the hybrid system across all the lines - Accord, Civic, Prelude and CR-V -

when they came out there was a big push that was going to be a huge percentage of sales for Honda.”

From 2024 to mid-2026, those three product lines netted over 800,000 combined units sales.

Overall, the event at Mid-Ohio serves as a testament to Honda’s long-term vision. The electrified technology proving itself on the track is directly paving the way for the consumer vehicles of tomorrow, including Honda’s highly anticipated, upcoming production V6 hybrid.

“It’s just a continuation of Honda’s investment in this technology,” Fu said. “This is just a continuation down that path.”

GAME ON FOR USF JUNIORS

Three race weekends are in the books for this year’s USF Juniors Presented by Continental Tire season, and three more remain, starting with a pair of races to comprise this week’s USF Pro Patriot 250 Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio. USF Juniors is the first step on the open-wheel ladder in North America, and the proof of its worth can be accurately gauged by the fact that 13 different nationalities have been represented on the grids this season.

The majority of the competitors have been drawn from karting, and the average age of the 21 drivers entered this week is just over 16.

This will be their only opportunity to compete in front of an NTT INDYCAR SERIES crowd, so the stakes are high – and especially so

for those still in contention for the championship and a scholarship valued at $251,516 to graduate to USF2000 in 2027.

Four different winners have emerged from the opening nine races and no fewer than a dozen have either stood on a podium or claimed a fastest race lap. So the level of competition is extremely high.

Poland’s Karol Pasiewicz is the current points leader for Olivia Racing. The former karting standout is the oldest driver in the field at age 20 – a mantle he has inherited after his closest title rival, Spain’s Ivan Machado Perez, unfortunately withdrew following a pair of accidents in May at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

Karol Pasiewicz swept the weekend for Olivia Racing at CTMP.
Olivier Mrak has been a regular podium contender for Zanella Racing.

Pasiewicz finished second in each of the first three races at Homestead-Miami Speedway in February, then qualified second for all three races of the next event at Carolina Motorsports Park, only to endure a series of misfortunes which netted him a best finish of only 11th. Fortunately, he rebounded magnificently at CTMP,winning all three races from pole and surging to the top of the point standings.

In Machado Perez’s absence, a trio of Zanella Racing teammates occupy the next three places in the championship – and are separated by only 19 points. Olivier Mrak, from Ottawa, leads the way despite the fact he is still seeking his first win. Nevertheless, five podium finishes leave him just 26 points shy of Pasiewicz and four ahead of teammate Max Mokarem. The Virginia-based Lebanese racer won two of the three opening races of the season but

struggled for consistency in Carolina before a crash early in qualifying at CTMP ensured he would have to start all three races from deep in the field.

Florida-based Brazilian Victor Couto has been trending in the opposite direction and has every intention of improving upon his pair of second-place finishes in Canada.

Other likely contenders will include Canada’s Cole

Medeiros and Exclusive Autosport teammate Bex Cranston, from Greenwich, Conn., along with Finland’s Vilho Aatola (DEForce Racing), Denmark’s Casper Nissen (JHDD powered by ECR) and 14-year-old VRD Racing teammates Edward Kennedy, from Mont-Tremblant, Canada, and Dutchman Dean Hoogendoorn, both of whom impressed on debut in Canada.

Zanella’s Max Mokarem was the early season pacesetter.
Vilho Aatola is the highest placed returning driver from 2025.

JEFFERS SEEKS ANOTHER

One year ago, talented Texas teenager Jack Jeffers claimed two victories from the USF2000 Presented by Continental Tire tripleheader event at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The weekend served as a launching pad which propelled him to the championship and a schol-

arship valued at $405,500 to make the step up to the next level on the USF Pro Championships ladder.

Jeffers returns to the scenic venue with the Exclusive Autosport team for this week’s USF Pro Patriot 250 Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio as the USF Pro 2000 championship leader and has his sights set

on securing another scholarship before graduating on to INDY NXT in 2027.

The 19-year-old from San Antonio, Texas, has continued to impress since claiming pole position on his USF Pro 2000 debut on the streets of Arlington, Texas. He failed to convert it into a maiden victory, due to a gearbox glitch which caused him to collect one of the omnipresent walls, but he bounced back one day later to set the record straight. Jeffers backed that up by winning again at the Indianapolis Grand Prix road course, and underscored his title credentials by finishing fourth and second in the two most recent races at Road America.

Jeffers is gunning for a second straight championship with Exclusive Autosport.
Californians Argyros and Mossman lead the pack at Road America.

He claimed a fastest race lap for good measure, extending his points lead from just seven to 20 heading into this weekend.

Californian G3 Argyros was the man to beat in Wisconsin, claiming his maiden victory in the opening race and then doubling up for the locally based Pabst Racing team. The sweep vaulted him from sixth in the points table to second, four points clear of Turn 3 Motorsport’s Leonardo Escorpioni.

The Florida-based Brazilian has stepped up directly into USF Pro 2000 after winning last year’s USF Juniors championship and made a spectacular debut when he took advantage of Jeffers’ misfortune to win the opening race in Arlington. Escorpioni also showed his versatility by finishing second at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park – one of two oval tracks that are part of this year’s 18-race schedule.

Consistency also has been a hallmark of VRD Racing’s Mossman. From Newport Beach, Calif., Mossman has accumulated five top-four finishes from

the seven races to date and lies just one point behind Escorpioni. Now in his third full season at this level after making his debut in 2023, Mossman is still searching for an elusive first victory as his 50th start rapidly approaches.

Michael Costello, Andres Cardenas and Thomas Schrage also remain firmly in

title contention as the series reaches its halfway point for what will likely be a critical tripleheader. Costello, from Naples, Fla., edged Turn 3 Motorsport teammate Escorpioni to the win at Lucas Oil IRP, while rookie Cardenas, from Peru, has been regularly in contention for JHDD powered by ECR, highlighted by a pair of podium finishes last time out.

Schrage, meanwhile, will undoubtedly have the knowledgeable local fan base on his side as the native of Bethel, Ohio, chases his first podium finish for TJ Speed Motorsports. Schrage habitually runs up front at his home track, despite a continual struggle to find the funding, and has been knocking on the door with the Indiana-based team.

Leonardo Escorpioni heads Turn 3 teammate Michael Costello.
Ohio’s Thomas Schrage seeks to shine for TJ Speed Motorsports.

GARZON UNDER PRESSURE

USF2000 Presented by Continental Tire, the middle rung on the USF Pro Championships ladder, is shaping up into quite a battle. At stake is a scholarship valued at $409,816 to graduate next year to USF Pro 2000.

The early part of the season saw Sebastian Garzon romp into a commanding lead in the points table for DEForce Racing, but the highly rated Colombian has been unable to shake off a couple of determined Australian challengers, Brad Majman and Eddie Beswick, who are teammates at Pabst Racing.

Garzon endured some struggles last year after stepping up from the karting ranks before ending

the season on a high note by making his first visit to the podium in the final race at Portland International Raceway. He has continued that momentum into 2026. Garzon claimed not one but two wins in the opening

event of the season on the streets of St. Petersburg, Fla., then added one more win and a pair of podium finishes at the Indianapolis Grand Prix road course. After finishing on the podium again in the only visit to an

oval this year, at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park, Garzon held a commanding 54-point advantage over his nearest challenger.

But that margin has now been whittled down to 30 points. A lackluster first qualifying session in the most recent event at Road America left Garzon with some work to do, although he responded like champions do by finishing fifth, fourth and third in the tripleheader event. He also recorded a fastest lap in Race Two and pole position for the finale.

The biggest mover in Wisconsin – at Pabst Racing’s home track – was Majman, who had to be content with second in both of the first two races, despite starting from pole, then came good on Sunday by adding a second victory to the one he scored at Indy in May.

Teammate Beswick, a former Australian Formula Ford champion, also played a starring role at Road America.

A maiden win, a fifth and then another runner-up finish moved him up from fourth to third in the points table.

A pair of one-two finishes vaulted Pabst Racing to the top of the Team Championship standings, but by a relatively slim margin of 25 points over Exclusive Autosport, for which standard bearers Evan Cooley, from Mokena, Ill., and Canadian Anthony Martella have both won races this year. Rookie brothers Ayrton and Gabriel Cahan, from Santa Fe, N.M., also have displayed promise for Exclusive Auto-

sport since rising up from finishing first and second in last year’s F1600 Championship Series.

The highest placed rookie at the mid point of the 18race season is Florida-based Brazilian Joao Vergara, who is placed fifth in the overall standings for VRD Racing, although, remarkably, teammate Oliver Wheldon, from St. Petersburg, Fla., lies only eight points adrift despite being unable to take part in the opening two races – in his hometown – because he hadn’t yet attained the minimum age of 15.

Cooley and Martella have led the charge for Exclusive Autosport.
Young Oliver Wheldon has emerged like a cork from a bottle.
