For the 14th time, the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg presented by RP Funding opens the 17-race NTT INDYCAR SERIES season. This weekend also serves as the green flag for our official development series – INDY NXT by Firestone.

All weekend, you’ll see close and unpredictable competition on the track that makes for a true proving ground for our elite drivers as they compete for the most challenging championship in motorsports. But you’ll also see that the NTT INDYCAR SERIES is well on the way to being one of the most sustainable racing series in the world.

FIRESTONE’S 25TH CONSECUTIVE SEASON AS EXCLUSIVE TIRE SUPPLIER OF THE NTT INDYCAR® SERIES STARTS

at Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg

While 2023 marked Firestone’s tenth consecutive year as the entitlement sponsor of the season-opening race, this year’s 20th annual Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg presented by RP Funding will kick off celebrations of another key milestone for the iconic brand: 25 consecutive seasons as exclusive tire supplier of the NTT INDYCAR® SERIES.

Firestone’s storied heritage in racing dates back to 1911 when Ray Harroun drove his Firestone-equipped Marmon Wasp to the win at the inaugural Indianapolis 500® Mile Race. In using world-class racing to demonstrate its uncompromising durability and dependability, Firestone

continues in its role as a key innovation and marketing partner for the most versatile racing series in the world.

The Firestone Race Tire Engineering team and nearly 60 expert tire builders will deliver approximately 32,000 Firestone Firehawk race tires for the 2024 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season, including more than 5,000 tires for use in practice, qualifying and competition for the Indy 500® alone. In all, Firestone Racing will design, develop, and deliver more than 60 different race tire specifications to meet the extensive and varying demands of the 16 unique oval, road, and street course circuits across the 2024 schedule.

Firestone further demonstrates its continued commitment to the future of NTT INDYCAR SERIES racing as presenting sponsor and exclusive tire supplier of the top-tier development series, INDY NXT by Firestone, which also competes on the streets of St. Petersburg. While involved with previous iterations of the ladder series since the early 1990s, this season Firestone will produce more than 5,000 tires with 16 different specifiations to support the series and help develop the next generation of drivers.

In merging with Bridgestone in 1988 to form one of the world’s largest tire and rubber companies, Firestone plays a vital role in delivering Bridgestone’s vision to realizing a more sustainable future for tires, racing, and mobility. Motorsports serves as both a global co-creation platform and a proving ground for delivering the values of the Bridgestone E8 Commitment, which outlines eight areas where the company is focused on contributing to a more sustainable world.

Recent Firestone Racing activities have demonstrated Bridgestone E8 Commit-

ment values of emotion, energy, and ecology as part of a broader initiative to accelerate the use of sustainable technologies across the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. Since 2023, Firestone has provided alternate race tires for all street course races, including the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, made with natural rubber sourced from guayule shrubs grown at the company’s research facility in Arizona.

Additionally, Firestone Firehawk race tires developed specifially for last year’s Indianapolis 500 included a monomer that was produced in partnership with Shell from hard-to-recycle plastic

shopping bags, film, stretch wrap, and other flexible polymer packaging. Efforts are also ongoing to advance energy-efficient transportation and end-oflife recycling initiatives for race tires used throughout the season.

All Firestone Firehawk race tires are manufactured at Bridgestone’s energy-efficient Advanced Tire Production Center (ATPC) in Akron, Ohio, which opened in 2022 and was certifie by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certifiation (ISCC) system for its transparency and traceability of sustainable raw materials. It’s here that the Firestone Race Tire Engineering team works side-by-side with passenger tire engineers at the nearby Bridgestone Americas Technology Center to leverage lessons from racing to improve the products featured across the Bridgestone and Firestone passenger tire lines.

The Firestone brand’s role as a key marketing partner for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES extends from coast to coast, starting with the green flag at the season-opening Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg and continuing through the checkered flag at the champion-crowning season fiale on the Streets of Nashville, home to Bridgestone Americas’ headquarters.

LEGION-GANASSI MISSION TO HELP VETERANS MARCHES FORWARD

There’s much more to racing than sleek cars speeding around a racetrack trying to get to the finsh line fist. There are many other layers that tell a broader story. Take Chip Ganassi Racing and its sponsor The American Legion as a prime example.

On Nov. 27, CGR and The American Legion announced that Linus Lundqvist will drive the No. 8 The American Legion Honda throughout the 2024 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season. That news was just the start; this story goes much deeper.

These two organizations, which have been partners since 2021, have established connections that go well beyond the proud red, white and blue colors on CGR’s The American Legion Honda.

This partnership is about saving military veterans’ lives – literally.

The American Legion’s mission with Chip Ganassi Racing and within the NTT

INDYCAR SERIES is to spread awareness of the number one issue in the veteran community -- suicide. According to the National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report, it is estimated that 17 veterans take their lives each day.

“If we save one life today, that big number that everybody talks about goes down by default,” said Dean Kessel, chief marketing officer of The American Legion. “That’s the only metric that matters.”

One of the initiatives to raise that awareness began Nov. 28, Giving Tuesday.

Chip Ganassi Racing is using the global generosity movement that helps transform communities across the world to encourage fans to think about The American Legion as a preferred charity during this season of generosity.

On Giving Tuesday, the partners collaborated and launched “12 Days of #VetsGiving,” featuring prize packages listed for auction and with a buy-it-now option.

Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg presented by RP Funding

This initiative, #VetsGiving, was fist launched by the team in 2022. Nearly $40,000 has been raised, with all proceeds going directly to The American Legion.

12 Days of #VetsGiving is just one way to spark awareness. So is the “Be The One” campaign fans will continue to see on Lundqvist’s car in 2024 after appearing on CGR Hondas driven by 2023 Rookie of the Year Marcus Armstrong, seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson, Indianapolis 500 winner and INDYCAR SERIES champion Tony Kanaan and twotime NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Alex Palou in recent years.

“They (Chip Ganassi Racing) have rallied behind our mission, launching not only a brand last year, but also our ‘Be The One’ platform, which is all about destigmatizing veterans asking for help,” Kessel said. “The visibility is off the chart, and for our 1.6 million members across the country, this is amazing.”

Part of this partnership is an activation unit at every NTT INDYCAR SERIES race venue. On race day for the season-opening Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg presented by RP Funding in 2023, a life was saved at that unit.

Kessel said a young man was walking around by himself at that activation unit

for about 30 or 40 minutes. He fially mustered enough courage and walked up to a representative and said, “Hey, I need to talk to somebody.”

“We found out he was active duty in the military,” Kessel said. “He was supposed to go out for his 17th tour, and he said that the only way to not go back out there is if he was no longer here, and that he did not want to go back out. We had our service officer there and someone from the VA (Veterans Administration) there that could talk to this young man and get him the right resources.

“We found out he was from Florida and lived near a very active (Legion) Post. We helped connect him to our tribe in Florida. We found out he liked to ride motorcycles. We have a 300,000-person group called “The American Legion Riders,” and that group has wrapped their arms around this young man and made him a part of their tribe. We check on him about every two weeks through the VA, and he is doing very well.”

Later that afternoon, Marcus Ericsson won the race in a Ganassi car. Kessel mentioned in a phone call to team owner Chip Ganassi later in the day that the team achieved two victories that afternoon in St. Petersburg.

“I did not get a chance to see Chip after the race, as we were still dealing with this,” Kessel said. “I called Chip from the airport, and I fist of all congratulated him for the race, but I told him, ‘Chip, we actually won twice today.’ He said, ‘Well, what does that mean?’ and then I told him the story.

“I could hear it in his voice. His father served and drove a tank in the Army. His voice started to crack a bit, and he said: ‘I’ve been a part of a lot of sponsorships over the years. I’ve sold a lot of products for a lot of companies, but I have never had the opportunity to save somebody’s life.’ He thanked us for trusting his organization to be a part of this mission.”

Without this sponsorship-team partnership and their initiatives and activations, another veteran’s life could have been lost this year. Due to this partnership, a veteran was saved.

WHO’S NEXT?

T USF2000 Preview

he last four seasons of USF2000 Presented by Continental Tire have ended with a different team at the top of the pecking order. Jay Howard Driver Development was top dog in 2020 with Christian Rasmussen, who subsequently went on to claim championships in both USF Pro 2000 and, last year, INDY NXT before securing a ride in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES for 2024 with Ed Carpenter Racing. The following year it was DEForce Racing to the fore with Brazilian Kiko Porto. Then in 2022 Cape Motorsports capped its remarkable run of 10 championships in 12 years through the efforts of Michael d’Orlando before calling time and heading off to fresh pastures in INDY NXT.

Last year, fially, after falling agonizingly short on a regular basis over the course of the past decade, Pabst Racing broke through in style as Simon Sikes scored six race wins, seven poles and nine fastest race laps. Sikes also took home a scholarship valued at $433,200 to make the step up into USF Pro 2000.

So, can Pabst continue its form into 2024 or will the streak of winning drivers from different teams continue?

The fist true indication will come with The Andersen Companies Grand Prix of St. Petersburg this weekend, when the fist two rounds of the new season has attracted an intriguing blend of drivers with differing levels of experience.

Once again, many of the leading protagonists from 2023 have graduated to the next level, leaving Ohio’s Evagoras Papasavvas (Jay Howard Driver Development), who placed fourth last year, and North Carolinian Sam Corry, who ended the year seventh in points, as the early

favorites to chase after a career enhancement scholarship valued at $458,400.

Corry has joined defending champion team Pabst Racing alongside returning driver Max Garcia, from Coconut Grove, Fla., who, at only 13 years of age, was not old enough to take part in the opening event of the 2023 season in St. Petersburg. But Garcia quickly established himself as a regular contender for honors. He also topped the timing charts during the recent Sprint Training pre-season test at NOLA Motorsports Park.

Hudson Schwartz, from Arlington, Va., also 14, will complete the Pabst lineup after winning last year’s Lucas Oil School of Racing Championship Series and finshing eighth in USF Juniors despite not competing in the opening event of the season.

Other returning drivers of note will include Joey Brienza (Exclusive Autosport) and Max Taylor (VRD Racing), both of whom were race winners in USF Juniors while also dipping a toe in the USF2000 waters; Thomas Schrage (Exclusive Autosport), winner of the 2022 FRP Formula 1600 Championship Series and a prestigious Team USA Scholarship who impressed in a handful of outings last year; and Indianapolis, Ind., native Elliot

Cox, who returns with the Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing Development team after shining on several occasions in 2023.

Third generation Brazilian racer Nicolas Giaffone seems set to shine among the rookie contingent after comfortably wrapping up the USF Juniors crown last year with DEForce Racing. Others to watch include Giaffone’s teammate Quinn Armstrong, from Newcastle, Australia, who was vice champion in USF Juniors last year, Michael Costello, a standout in the F4 United States Championship for Jay Howard Driver Development, and 2023 Team USA Scholarship winner Ayrton Houk, from McCordsville, Ind., who has joined DC Autosport after two strong seasons in F1600.

Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg presented by RP Funding Joey Brienza impressed during the Sprint Training test. Evagoras Papasavvas stood on the podium at St. Petersburg in 2023.

PICK A WINNER

USF Pro 2000 is the most senior of the three openwheel series which comprise the USF Pro Championships Presented by Continental Tire driver development ladder. Along with USF Juniors and USF2000, they provide a distinct and well-proven pathway from karting all the way to the senior levels of auto racing in North America: INDY NXT and the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. Each series provides full scholarships to ensure progression for the champions to move up onto the next level of the ladder.

The 2023 season provided some extraordinary competition. It was arguably the most competitive year in the series’ history dating back to 1999. There were more different race and pole winners – nine apiece – than ever before. No fewer than a dozen drivers secured at least one fastest race lap. The season also included re-

cord-breaking streaks for different consecutive race winners (six) and pole winners (seven) before Myles Rowe emerged from the pack to clinch the champion’s crown and a scholarship valued at $664,500 to make the step up into INDY NXT this year. The triumph continued Rowe’s rich vein of form which also included claiming the

USF2000 champion’s scholarship in 2022.

A bumper entry of 23 drivers representing eight nationalities is entered for the season’s opening pair of races this weekend which will comprise the Foundation Building Materials Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

After clinching last year’s USF2000 championship and a scholarship valued at over $433,000, Simon Sikes heads a strong rookie contingent with an eye to becoming the second driver in three years to secure successive titles in USF2000 and USF Pro 2000. Denmark’s Christian Rasmussen, who achieved the feat in 2020 and 2021, will line up on the NTT INDYCAR SERIES grid this year with Ed Carpenter Racing. Sikes, from Augusta, Ga., remains with Pabst Racing, which also guided Rowe to last year’s USF Pro 2000 crown.

The fiel also will include the second and third-place finshers in the 2023 USF2000 title-chase, Nikita Johnson and Lochie Hughes. In addition to clinching second place in the title decider at Portland, highly rated local driver Johnson (VRD Racing), from Gulfport, Fla., won a pair of USF Pro 2000 races in just five outings toward the end of last year as he looked to gain a jump start on his 2024 campaign. Australian Hughes didn’t enjoy the same luxury after vying with Sikes for superiority throughout the season, but is also expected to be right on the front-running pace

after joining Turn 3 Motorsport.

Others to watch include Canadian Mac Clark (DEForce Racing), who won the inaugural USF Juniors title in 2022 and impressed in a one-off USF Pro 2000 outing at Circuit of The Americas, where he claimed a pole, two podium finshes and a fastest race lap, as well as Mexican Ricardo Escotto (BN Racing), who claimed a fin victory last year on the Indianapolis road course in constantly changing weather conditions.

With several of the top point-scorers last year moving up the ladder to INDY NXT including Rowe – who becomes the sixth consecutive USF Pro 2000 champion to advance – Arizonan Jace Denmark (Pabst Racing) is the highest placed returnee. Denmark, who also placed third in the 2022 USF2000 standings, is joined in the Pabst Racing stable by Christian Brooks, from Los Angeles, Calif., who won once –right here on the streets of St. Petersburg –despite making only four starts in 2023.

Braden Eves also is set to rejoin the fray with a point to prove. Eves, the 2019 USF2000 champion, placed second in the 2021 USF Pro 2000 season and now returns with the Exclusive Autosport team after a year’s hiatus.

2005 REWIND: THE FIRST GRAND PRIX

It was a 1-23-4 sweep for Andretti Green Racing with the late Dan Wheldon leading the charge followed by teammates Tony Kanaan, Dario Franchitti, and the pole sitter Bryan Herta. Wheldon led 10 of the 100 laps and later won the Indianapolis 500 and the series championship that season.

The 2005 Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg also made history as the fist-ever street race for the Indy Racing League and the fist event promoted by Kim Green and Kevin Savoree, who still own and operate

the event today, as well as co-owners of Andretti Green Racing at the time.

A stretch of the St. Petersburg street circuit is now known as “Dan Wheldon Way” and a winners monument erected near the course in memory of this popular winner and local resident
