A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT Dear Friends, We are here today — despite the natural and political forces working against us — to celebrate 49 years of safe, legal abortion guaranteed by the decision in Roe v. Wade. No matter what is to come, we stand strong and ready to face it, together. As long as we have patients who need us and supporters like you by our side, Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast (PPGC) will continue to provide Care. No Matter What. Through our education, advocacy, and high quality reproductive health care, we empower our communities to make informed decisions about their lives and have autonomy over their bodies. While the opposition has been constant, so has our commitment. Planned Parenthood was created for this exact purpose and has been demanding reproductive rights for more than 100 years. Even as laws change, our Vision remains the same: Planned Parenthood seeks a world in which all children are wanted and cared for, all individuals have equal rights and dignity, sexuality is expressed with honesty, equality, and responsibility, and the decision to bear children is private and voluntary. I want to personally thank our incredible Co-Chairs Anne Chao, Carolyn Chao Sabat, Susie Dilg, and Mary S. Dilg Dawson for their extraordinary commitment to our mission; our excellent Committee who helped make this year’s luncheon a success; and all of you whose generosity helped us reach our highest fundraising goal in the history of this luncheon. As we celebrate this landmark decision almost 50 years later, I want to take this opportunity to recognize three powerful champions I looked forward to celebrating with at this luncheon year after year. Sadly, last year we lost: Sarah Weddington, who at just 26 years old successfully argued one of the most important cases in U.S. history, giving us a reason to celebrate today; Muffie Moroney, a former PPGC Board Member and longtime Roe Luncheon Committee member, who supported us in so many ways for more than three decades; and, Sissy Farenthold, a trailblazer in Texas politics whose fierce determination to do and fight for what is right inspired generations. We miss them dearly but their legacies of courage, tenacity, and dedication to fundamental human rights and dignity endure. Sarah, Muffie, and Sissy demonstrated what it means to truly live one’s values and speak up for what is right. We must uphold those values, especially in the face of relentless adversity. A LETTER FROM OUR CO-CHAIRS Dear Roe v. Wade Luncheon Guests, Thank you for joining us for the 2022 Roe v. Wade Luncheon and for everything you do to support Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast (PPGC). Since we were not able to come together in person last year, we are extremely grateful for the opportunity to be in this room today. Thank you to everyone who made this event possible, including our outstanding committee for helping us make this one of the most successful luncheons in our history. Comprehensive reproductive health care is vital for a healthy community and PPGC has been dedicated to delivering Care. No Matter What for more than 85 years. We could not do it without your passionate support. Whether this is your first time joining the PPGC luncheon or you have been supporting us for decades, we are so grateful that you are here, and we hope today energizes you as the fight for comprehensive health care continues. The fight for inclusive and quality care has been ongoing for generations, and just as we took the baton from the generation before us, we must pass it on to the generation after us. The future of health care, including access to safe, legal abortion, depends on all of us carrying the baton and continuing to move it forward. Today we are honoring a very special and very deserving group of volunteers. This year our Second Century Award will be going to our Hand Holders – past and present – an especially dedicated group who embody our mission to provide compassionate care. The Hand Holders are so important, and each and every one of these volunteers has left an indelible mark on the patients they serve and our organization. Last year we faced some disappointing moments and discouraging decisions on reproductive health care, and we know there are more challenges to come. But together, with all the people in this room and all the people joining us online, we will not stop until we guarantee what is Rightfully Ours. PLANNED PARENTHOOD GULF COAST HAND HOLDERS A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE HAND HOLDER PROGRAM Sitting during one of her many volunteer shifts assembling pill packets, Ginny Willig had an idea. She wanted to start a program where volunteers sit with patients during abortions, to comfort them, talk to them, or just be there for them however they needed. While originally the idea was met with a good amount of apprehension, once the program began, no one wanted it to stop. From the staff, to the patients, to the volunteers themselves, everyone benefits from the Hand Holder program. Quickly the Hand Holders became an essential part of clinic operations and the staff and patients depended on them. Not only were they helping patients, but they also helped staff to have more time and bandwidth to do what they needed to do. In talking to several past and current Hand Holders, we found several things to be consistently true. Above all that being a Hand Holder is incredible fulfilling. Getting to see the immediate impact of your volunteering is so inspiring that most of our Hand Holders do it for decades. Everyone has different stories because everyone is different – the volunteers and the patients. According to our Hand Holders, some patients want to talk the whole time, some want to sit in silence, some want to squeeze the strong hands of our volunteers, and some don’t need much at all. No matter what a patient needs, our Hand Holders are there to support them, compassionately and unconditionally. Volunteers have always made up the backbone of our organization, each one playing a vital role. But today we honor the special forces of our volunteers. We are proud to present this year’s Second Century Award to all our Hand Holders. We could not think of a more deserving group, and we are so grateful for each and every one of you.

KEYNOTE PANELISTS ALEXIS MCGILL JOHNSON The President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. Alexis is a champion for social and racial justice, a respected political and cultural organizer, and a tireless advocate for reproductive freedom. She has been in Planned Parenthood’s leadership for more than a decade as PPFA board chair, Planned Parenthood Federal PAC chair, and a Planned Parenthood Action Fund board member. A researcher by training, Alexis co-founded and co-directed the Perception Institute, a consortium of researchers, advocates, and strategists who translate cutting-edge mind science research on race, gender, ethnic, and other identities into solutions that reduce bias and discrimination, and drive equity and belonging.
HELENE KRASNOFF Vice President of PPFA’s Public Policy, Litigation and Law, she leads a team of 20 attorneys who advise affiliates on legal impacts of legislation restricting reproductive health care services, most often abortion care, and represents affiliates in legal challenges to these laws. Helene joined Planned Parenthood Federation of America in 2000. Prior to joining PP, she was with law firm Arnold and Porter. Helene is a graduate of Duke University and University of Michigan Law School.
DR. BHAVIK KUMAR A family physician and Medical Director for Primary and Trans Care at Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, an abortion provider at Planned Parenthood Center for Choice, and a National Medical Spokesperson for PPFA. After completing his medical training in New York, Dr. Kumar returned to his home state of Texas, where he has been practicing medicine since 2015.
