Microban®
PPG was one of the first pioneers in the paint industry to develop new performance standards for zero and low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) products. VOCs are indoor air pollutants commonly found in paints, adhesives, sealants and carpets. Low VOC contents assist architects, building owners and homebuilders in building green.
The low VOC content in Pure Performance means less fumes, less indoor pollution and less harm to health and the environment. Using Pure Performance means that air pollutants in the coatings have been reduced to create a better interior space while painting.

The Sensitive Choice® brand is a not-for-profit program developed by the National Asthma Council Australia in 2006 to inform the public about asthma and allergy management. The Sensitive Choice initiative helps more people with asthma and allergies to identify products and services that may be better for them.
Products^ that are part of the Sensitive Choice program have been rigorously assessed and approved by an independent advisory panel of experts. They ensure that the products do no harm and offer relative benefits to people with asthma or allergies.
VOCs in many interior paints can cause respiratory issues. Sensitive Choice recognises that Pure Performance is low in VOC, which helps maintain indoor air quality during and after painting.
Case Studies
Osbourne Park Hospital and Taubmans
The Osborne Park Hospital Rehabilitation + Neonatal Nursery (OPHRNN) project aimed to improve and extend the rehabilitation and maternity and neonatal services and facilities at the Osborne Park Hospital. This included a new 16-bed ward, alterations and extensions to the inpatient and outpatient therapy hub, a new therapy garden, a new maternity assessment unit, a new neonatal nursery, and alterations to the maternity ward.
This project painted the entire Osborne Park Hospital, refreshing existing buildings and new extensions. Taubmans Pure Performance Ceiling, Prep Coat, and Interior Walls Low Sheen paint was specified in this project along with Johnstone’s Woodcare and other PPG products.
Together with the Architects at Carabiner, painters at Hao Contracting and Taubmans’ commercial team in WA, this project was successfully completed.
THE PROBLEM
Any finishes in a health care setting must be carefully considered to reduce or eliminate the effects of harmful chemicals, odours and the retention and growth of bacteria to help both patients and staff. Paints are no exception and painting systems with anti-microbial properties and low VOC, like Pure Performance, can help the reduction and elimination goal.
THE SOLUTION
Working together with Carabiner, Taubmans’ knowledgeable commercial team advised and recommend painting and coatings system solutions which best suited the various areas for the OPHRNN projects – whether it was an area exposed to the external environment, wet areas or clinical or non-clinical spaces. Most importantly, advising for interior painting systems to include Pure Performance with its antimicrobial properties and very low VOC.
Colour is a fundamental element of the built environment and very important in health care settings. The interior schemes for the OPHRNN project were based on the application of colour theory and therapy. Particular attention was paid to the psychology of colours and tones as the primary selection criterion rather than the aesthetics and trends at the time. Colour in a specific functional area will positively affect the human mind.
In the Neonatal Nursery, green works to promote harmony, rest and balance in people’s physical and mental comfort. Green helps to reduce worry, stress or anxiety for the parents and staff working in the nursery.
Orange is an energising colour that can help to provide a gentle warming effect and is known for stimulating depressed patients. Orange was used in the Maternity Assessment Unit as it is used by expectant mothers who might suffer from mood swings due to their pregnancy.
As a calming colour that promotes trust, blue has been applied to Rehabilitation Ward to help patients ease tensions and stay mentally calm. Blue is in the cool colour range and can also promote pain relief and mental relaxation by helping to reduce body temperature and relieve tension.
Yellow was applied to the Therapy Hub, a space for inpatients and outpatients undertaking rehabilitation. Using yellow sparsely can promote positive stimulation of the mind and body and help increase the mechanisms of the human body.
RESULTS
The Therapy Hub has undergone the biggest transformation. One physiotherapist complimented that the Therapy Hub is probably one of the best rehabilitation spaces she has worked in. Nothing beats the occupants of the spaces reinforcing that an architect has created an architectural piece that they have envisaged and that works for them and their visitors.

THE IMPORTANCE OF COLOUR
Regis Towers and Taubmans
Regis Towers is in the heart of Haymarket, a prime Sydney CBD location. The three high-rise residential towers contain 1,500 units and home over 3,000 residents.
In need of a refresh and to revitalise the residents’ interior common spaces, Taubmans’ paints were used. A full repaint of all corridors, entry doors, corridors, walls and ceilings was completed using carefully selected Taubmans products. Using specially chosen calming, neutral colours alongside vibrate blocks of colour, the new and improved Taubmans Pure Performance with Microban® product protection and Sensitive Choice approval was perfect for the repaint.
THE PROBLEM
As a currently occupied living space, any painting work had to be done quickly, efficiently and with minimal disturbance to the residents. A low-smell paint solution available in the approved colours was a must. Due to the number of residents moving throughout the building, Regis Towers was also concerned with the hygiene inside the common areas.
To meet the challenges of painting a high-traffic, multi-residential building, it was important the solution was low odour, low VOC and fast drying. Taubmans Pure Performance, Advanced Adhesion & Mould Blocker and Ultimate Enamel were specified.
Pure Performance is approved by the National Asthma Council’s Sensitive Choice Program. Products approved by Sensitive Choice may be a better option for people with asthma and allergies — this is an important consideration for communal shared spaces with lots of movement. Using Pure Performance on walls and ceilings meant residents had minimal paint smell in the building and their homes. With cleaner air during the repaint project, the common areas could open again sooner.
Pure Performance also contains Microban technology. Microban provides 24-hour, anti-microbial product protection to painted surfaces which inhibits damaging microbial growth. This helps to reduce bacteria, mould and mildew growth, keeping walls looking fresher for longer.
