Kiwanis Geelong All Ford Day W

hether you’re a hardened ‘blue oval’ fan or just a regular car lover, the recent running of the annual Kiwanis Geelong All Ford Day (15th Feb 2015) was a must see event. Held on the idyllic Deakin University grounds in Geelong, Victoria, PPG is a proud sponsor of this charity event which this year attracted over 8000 people. Visitors could stroll through the display of 1,300 Ford show cars from

every era and then follow up with the surrounding trade displays, along with merchandise and souvenir stalls. Other features included autograph sessions with current V8 Supercar drivers, as well as past legends, such as Allan Moffat, John Bowe and Jim Richards. There were even rides, face painting and entertainment for the young FoMoCo fans. One of the highlights of the day was an historic touring car display which roared into life with an ear-splitting bellow. The only downside was the need to wait 12 months for the next event!

ew events have the extraordinary heritage of the annual Summernats car festival and in its 28th running (1st – 4th January 2015), it showed no signs of slowing down. Over 100,000 fans sweltered through mid-30ºCs temperatures to drool over almost 2000 vehicles on display at the 70 hectare Exhibition Park in Canberra.

PPG was again a proud supporter, as well as operating one of the most popular onsite trade stands which was alive with examples from PPG’s VIBRANCE COLLECTION® custom paint finishes. Included were special finishes from the Charley Hutton Ridler Color Collection, some vibrant colours formulated by the local PPG Team to show

the versatility of the PPG products and an eye-catching vehicle display. PPG painted vehicles also featured heavily in the show halls and judging categories. According to PPG’s Tony Naughton (NSW Business Development Manager), the PPG stand was packed over the four days.

f you are a paint technician who is being blamed for not producing the expected performance from your waterborne basecoat system, chances are it’s not your fault. If you run into time-consuming problems, such as – can’t de-nib the basecoat, the basecoat needs to be baked multiple times, you need to apply a blend-set coat before blending, the basecoat needs to be activated and the remainder can’t be stored after the job or you’re having colour issues – you’re not using the Envirobase High Performance paint system.

A vast, walk-through layout packed with IT’S EITHER LOW-VOC OR IT’S NOT

F

or repairers in this corner of the globe, the term ‘low-VOC’ (Volatile Organic Compounds) can be a bit confusing. Basically, it stems from legislation in regions of the world, such as the European Union (EU), Canada and parts of the USA, which place limits on the VOC content of refinish coatings in RFU form in order to help reduce smog creating emissions. Each has taken a different approach to assessing VOCs but, in general, when we talk about a low-VOC ‘compliant’ product, it’s one that meets EU regulations.

It’s important to note that these legislations don’t insist on waterborne technology. Indeed, products using High Solids, Very High Solids or Ultra High Solids technologies, as well as waterborne (or a combination of these) can all be compliant as long as they fall within the VOC limit. However, the key factor to remember is that, to be classified as low-VOC, every component in the system you use must be low-VOC. That means low-VOC primers, a low-VOC basecoat system and low-VOC clearcoats. Exchange any one of these steps with a non-compliant product and the whole system is no longer low-VOC compliant. This is the beauty of the new, next generation Envirobase High Performance paint system. It’s clearly labelled and easy to understand so that it’s very straightforward for you, your painters, your customers or anyone else who is interested, to see that a low-VOC system is being used.

Living in a beautiful location has its lifestyle advantages and just because it happens to be 700km from a major city doesn’t mean your business has to take a backseat.

D

espite arriving in the isolated Western Australian town of Esperance for a one year stay, Melisa and David Rowe are still there 20 years later! With its sweeping beaches, the active lifestyle it promotes and the strong sense of being part of a friendly community, the couple fell in love with the region on WA’s south eastern coast. However, it is the business opportunities – which include Esperance Smash Repairs – that have anchored them to the town.

Work/life balance Interestingly, neither David nor Melisa came from a collision repair industry background. David had played high level Australian Rules Football in Perth and held several sales rep roles but, after 12 months backpacking overseas, he decided that whatever he did, lifestyle was all important.

When the couple were offered a partnership in a Windscreens O’Brien agency which was attached to Esperance Smash Repairs they decided to see how it went for 12 months. They quickly showed plenty of business nous by increasing the agency’s annual turnover more than 10 fold! David began helping to run Esperance Smash Repairs and went on to manage the operation so that when the original owners retired, he and Melisa were perfectly placed to buy the business. David admits, it was the ideal way to cut his teeth in business.

“I had the best mentor with Colin Symonds.

He and his wife Sue had started Esperance Smash Repairs from the ground up 35 years before and it had a fantastic reputation.

They taught me everything, from the trade side through to the business management side – it was amazing!”

Today, the couple actually own four businesses under the one roof – recently adding Esperance Kar Kare and Esperance Window Tinting. Thirteen staff, plus David and Melisa, work in the 1330m² facility – two painters and an apprentice, four panel beaters and an apprentice, one windscreen

technician, one window tinter, a detailer and two administration staff. While they do get their fair share of supermarket scratches, a large percentage of the jobs come from kangaroo hits. Given that Esperance is in the middle of a kangaroo feeding area that stretches hundreds of kilometres inland, there’s no shortage of work.

“Basically, we do all types of repairs but kangaroo damage would be our primary source and the average cost of repair can easily be up around $6000.” Melisa adds, “Out of 40 cars in here at the moment, 20 are kangaroo hits!”

With jobs coming in from up to 500km away, work volume tends not to be a problem, however finding skilled staff hasn’t been easy, according to David.

“In the early days we realised there was no point putting an ad in the paper for a qualified tradesperson so we decided to invest in our apprentices. We have a close association with the schools – we know the teachers personally – and they actually approach us when they have a kid who is suitable.”

“We’ve put 12 apprentices through in the past eight years”, says Melisa. “Every one of our current staff has actually trained here!”

Although being 700km from Perth makes it difficult to access the support needed to upskill staff, David says they do take advantage of training from industry organisations, such as the MTAWA and I-CAR, as well as from key suppliers, including PPG and AMCAP. “We have a strong rapport with the PPG Team and we’ve always been happy with the products but about four years ago we asked for more training. Price is important but we’re more interested in training for our staff and other PPG support services.

Now, at least three times a year our PPG Training Manager spends a few days here reinforcing processes and showing our boys new products and techniques. For us to get

the best quality people working in our business we feel we need to offer them a career rather than just a job. The aim is to get our people to invest mentally back into the business – in the future they might be able to take the same path we did.”

Being isolated from the big city markets doesn’t mean Melisa and David can avoid the cost pressures that challenge everyone in the industry. That’s seen them take advantage of support from a variety of sources. For example, Melisa has held a number of positions with the Esperance Chamber of Commerce and Industry, including a stint as President.

“It definitely gave the business exposure but I think it also gave David and I some really good support. You realise that, even though the members are in different industries, we all go through similar problems that small businesses face.

Interacting with other local businesses

was a fantastic way to network, find improvements and get some real positivity going in the town. It also highlights the importance of shopping locally and using as many local suppliers as possible.”

David says that to ensure an adequate return on investment the business must learn and evolve. He says, they rely heavily on suppliers, such as PPG, and that’s seen them embrace a number of products and processes which have made significant improvements to productivity.

“Definitely, switching to waterborne with Envirobase High Performance has been fantastic for our refinish process. We have a young crew in the paint shop and they’re ‘into’ technology and not afraid of change so it was a seamless switch to Envirobase.

Straightaway our efficiency has quickened up. Roll-on priming is also a big thing for us.

We use it every day and it’s a massive time and material saving. We’ve also installed a couple of dustless sanding stations and they’re really good for saving time by not having to clean the workshop.”

In addition, David and Melisa have recently started working with WA MVP Manager, Mark Metcalf.

“It’s easy to get into a rut where you spend all your time working in the business rather than on the business. We think PPG’s MVP program is a fantastic way to analyse what we do and see where we can make improvements and increase profitability.”

A lot of work has been done on OH&S processes over the past 12 months and there are plans for the business to become ‘Green Stamp Approved’. While the search for greater productivity and profitability is vital, doing that while maintaining the current lifestyle for themselves and staff is a priority, says David.

“We offer the crew the flexibility to do as much overtime as they like during the week so they have the weekend off. Everyone is into sports here – motorbikes, surfing, fishing, etc – and by having that time off we find they’re more productive during the week.”

Indeed, Melisa says it’s just as important for David and herself.

“We just had our first overseas holiday together after owning the business for eight years. I think you need to have a break and recharge otherwise you wear yourself out and start to wear others down.”

In the end, the couple are extremely pleased with what they’ve created for their two children and for the local community, says Melisa.

“We’re very proud of our apprentices and staff – they’re a big plus for us. We’re also proud that we’ve continued to successfully run this business after the couple that started it 35 years before. And we’re proud of our reputation. Lifestyle is everything – we love it R here and we’re certainly not leaving.”

Put the polish on your spectro readings Don’t skimp on surface preparation before taking a spectro reading – the quality of the surface you measure is crucial to the accuracy of the reading you receive.

T

hanks to its proven ability to dramatically shorten colour matching time, PPG’s exclusive spectrophotometer device, the RapidMatch® X-5, has become a vital tool in paint shops across this region and around the world.

However, it’s important to remember that it’s not a typical workshop tool – it’s a scientific device that has a specific process in order to achieve precise results. While most users understand that it needs to be handled carefully, kept clean and calibrated before use every morning, some are unaware of how vital correct surface preparation is before taking a reading.

How a spectrophotometer works Understanding how a spectro measures colour gives a clearer insight into why surface preparation is so crucial.

Essentially, a spectro reads colours by measuring light reflected back from the surface at a number of different angles. For example, the RapidMatch® X-5 takes readings from an industry-leading five angles to ensure extremely accurate colour measurements.

Light reflects differently from every colour and even tiny differences are picked up by the RapidMatch® X-5.

Therefore, it’s easy to see why the condition of the original colour sample being measured has to be as perfect as possible in order to get the best reading and, hence, the best match.

Simply giving the panel a quick clean isn’t enough – even fine scratches and small surface imperfections will disrupt the way the light reflects and make it difficult to get a true reading.

Recommended surface preparation process • Machine polish the closest adjoining panel to the repair area. Choose the flattest section and use Mirka Polarshine F05 and a black buff pad. Wipe with a micro-fibre cloth to avoid adding scratches to the surface. To enhance the gloss even more (especially with dark colours), apply Polarshine Liquid Nano Wax.

• Don’t use coarse cutting compounds in place of Polarshine F05 – they actually put fine scratches into the surface. If it’s an older vehicle with weathered paintwork or carwash scratches you could start with a cutting compound but then follow with Polarshine F05, as per the recommended process.

The more accurate the reading of a vehicle’s colour, the closer it will match against the unique reflectance readings in the PPG database and the less time you will spend colour matching.

ver seven generations, the popularity of the Volkswagen Golf continues to reach unprecedented heights. Production commenced in 1974 and, in June 2014, it passed an extraordinary milestone as the 30 millionth Golf rolled off the production line in Wolfsburg, Germany.

This not only makes it the most successful European car in history, it also means that over its 40 years in production so far, an average of 2000 Golfs have been purchased around the world every day!

A

ustralia’s bio-security agencies paid little or no interest when 31 Beetles were deposited on local soil in 1953. While they shared only a passing resemblance to their insect namesakes, what these quirky looking machines did do was grab the attention of the motoring public. With its foreign name and now unmistakeable shape, the Volkswagen Beetle was unlike anything seen in this region before but

the compact and economical machine fitted perfectly into the tough motoring landscape of the time. The little air-cooled car was reliable, easy to drive and proved to be extremely hardy. Indeed, thanks to good ground clearance and its remarkable toughness, its reputation was further enhanced with success in the reliability trials which were popular in the 1950s. These fast paced rallies circumnavigated the country and front page newspaper reports regularly carried the news of Volkswagen victories.

Barely a year after the first shipment arrived, Volkswagen began local assembly at its brand new factory in the Melbourne suburb of Clayton. Later in the 50s, the

bug-shaped, two-door Beetle was joined by the equally iconic Kombi and the boxshaped Transporter. By 1960, the Beetle – known locally as the VW 1200 – had achieved an amazing feat by becoming the country’s second best selling car, behind the FB Holden. As sales climbed, investment in the Clayton factory was increased and, in 1963, a major export program saw Beetles shipped to countries around the region, including New Zealand, Fiji and Malaysia.

Sales peaked in 1964 at close to 35,000, including 3100 exports. There’s also an interesting insight into the brand’s focus on quality which continues today – at the height of production at Clayton, approximately one in seven employees worked in a quality inspection role. Around that time, strict government tariffs and an influx of modern Japanese and British models began impacting Volkswagen sales.

Both were factors in the decision to cease local production in 1968, after which the

local arm of the company transformed into a smaller, differently owned operation.

Back in Germany, Volkswagen engineers were hard at work on an all new and radically different generation and, as the mid-70s approached, now familiar names began to hit local roads. The Passat was released in 1974 to widespread acclaim, including being named ‘Wheels Magazine Car of the Year’. Two years later, the Golf R A L LY I N G P O I N T

achieved the same accolade – a feat repeated by the 6th generation Golf in 2009 and the 7th generation in 2013. In many ways, the first generation Golf was the complete opposite of the Beetle – it was upright and businesslike rather than round and cute, the engine was water-cooled, not air-cooled, and drove the front wheels rather than the rears. However, like the Beetle before it, the Golf was an ideal car for the times. It quickly

When Volkswagen Motorsport returned to the World Rally Championship (WRC) in 2013, it was expected to take time to find its feet against its well established competitors. Instead, the Polo R WRC with French star Sebastien Ogier behind the wheel, romped away to the title, winning nine of the 13 rounds (including Australia)! To prove it wasn’t a fluke, in 2014 Volkswagen Motorsport successful defended its WRC title – again, in spectacular style. This time Ogier powered his Polo R WRC to eight wins from 13 rounds to once again snatch the title, while his teammate, Finland’s Jari-Matti Latvala, was victorious at four rounds.

T These days, Volkswagen is very much a global manufacturer, with production plants in places as far afield as China, the US, South America, Slovenia and Spain, along with the brand’s original home in Wolfsburg, Germany. PPG supports Volkswagen’s operations by supplying materials for the entire paint process, including e-coat, primers, topcoat colours and clearcoats, to manufacturing facilities on a global scale. Indeed, at the Wolfsburg plant, PPG supplies products to the Hall 15 facility which paints around 3500 Golf-series vehicles per day! In addition, PPG is actually contracted to run the paint facility at Hall 9 where around 30 fulltime PPG staff oversee the painting of around 1000 Tiguan and Touran (a compact MPV not sold locally) models per day.

This close working relationship is also evident at the local level. For instance, PPG colour experts check shipments of Volkswagen vehicles when they arrive in the country in order to identify colour

‘variants’ and ‘specials’ and quickly make that information available to local collision repairers.

In turn, Volkswagen issues general approval for PPG products to be used to refinish its vehicles. Thanks to the outstanding quality of its online paint process, Volkswagen is able to offer customers a 12 year corrosion warranty on the main steel body on most models. In the event that a local customer has a paintwork concern, PPG is also able to step in as an independent expert to inspect the vehicle and provide a report about the issue and what caused it. It’s all about Volkswagen’s focus on customer service and giving its owners greater peace-of-mind.

The late 1990s saw a lean sales period for Volkswagen in Australia but, with the new Millennium, came a dramatic resurgence. After the brand came back under ‘factory’ control in 2001, an impressive 10,000 vehicles were sold for the first time in three decades. Rather than

rely on just a few models, as it did in the beginning, the current Volkswagen range provides an extensive selection that gives virtually everyone an excuse to enjoy what the brand has to offer. As well as long running favourites, Polo, Golf, Jetta and Passat, there are performance models, such as the sexy Scirocco R, the adventure minded SUVs, Tiguan and Touareg, a choice of versatile people-movers, the tough Amarok ute and a commercial vehicle range able to tackle anything you throw at it.

The local success story is summed up by the fact that, for eight straight years Volkswagen has been Australia’s top selling European vehicle manufacturer. It seems clear that sixty years on from Volkswagen’s local debut, it well and truly remains the R people’s car!

wenty-one year old, fourth year spray painting apprentice, Billy Cowcher, admits he’d never heard of the WorldSkills Competition when first asked to compete. However, he was ‘up’ for the challenge and the journey saw him go almost all the way to the international final.

The beauty of WorldSkills is that it offers regional competitions for a whole host of sectors and trades, including ‘Autobody Repair’ and ‘Vehicle Painting’. These lead to a national final with the winners invited to the international WorldSkills competition.

When Ray England (PPG Training Manager Victoria/Tasmania) was asked to nominate suitable regional candidates for the Melbourne competition he thought of Billy. “I knew Billy via my work with GOTAFE in Wangaratta and while doing on-site training at Woollards Auto Body Works (Shepparton, Victoria) where he works and I saw him as a perfect fit.”

GOTAFE Team Leader for Automotive, Mark Ward, says apprentices are encouraged to test themselves in competitions at any level. “I think a good challenge tends to bring out the best in them. As a learning experience it’s excellent. There is a fair bit of pressure and you need to do your homework and Billy is a great example.

He put in a lot of preparation work afterhours and on weekends and it definitely paid off.

He won the Victorian event, then went to the three day WorldSkills Australia National Competition, in Perth, where he won ‘silver’.”

Despite Billy being pipped for ‘gold’ (and the opportunity to go to WorldSkills International in Brazil in 2015) by just one point, his employer, Luke Burgmann, sees only positives. “It was a great opportunity for the young fella and I was really happy to see him do well. We missed Billy in the paint shop while he was at the competitions but, for the short time he was away, the rewards are great. He’s ended up a better painter who is excited and enthusiastic about his work. There’s certainly plenty of opportunities for him here in the future.”

Billy is happy to recommend using competitions as a way to improve.

“If anyone gets the opportunity to compete, I’d say go for it! I feel like I got a lot out of these competitions – I’ve learnt the importance of planning a job, I’ve learnt to deal better with pressure and I’ve met new people and made new friends. I don’t have any long term ambitions just yet but I think I’ll always be in the refinish industry.” R

Creating a winning culture Good sporting teams achieve success because all the individual members are focused on the same target – it can be the same for the team in your collision repair centre!

M

anaging people isn’t easy. Indeed, dealing with diverse personalities, different agendas and varying wants and needs makes it a challenge that overwhelms many managers. However, it is an absolutely essential skill to master in order to operate a successful and profitable collision repair centre. Inevitably, it’s people who make the performance difference so how do you get your own staff aligned and working together? According to MVP Manager ANZ, Greg Tunks, it can be extremely helpful to imagine your business as a sporting team.

Good sports I often use a sports team analogy. Like any good sporting team, the type of end result the collision centre achieves is reliant upon all the staff having a common goal and working towards the same target. Therefore, it’s helpful for the owner / manager to picture themselves as a coach. Basically, the role is about leadership – it’s a process whereby one person influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal.

What does a coach do to guide the team’s performance?

• Create a vision and a plan to achieve it • Clearly communicate it to the team – be transparent and let them know what you are trying to achieve • If something goes wrong don’t rant and rave – show the team the right way and explain why it needs to be done that way • Encourage and congratulate efforts to achieve the goals, even if they’re not entirely successful

It’s also important to make an honest appraisal of your leadership. What is your management style and how good are you at leading your team? No matter how good you are, there’s always room for improvement and there are plenty of resources available to help sharpen your leadership skills.

Getting the scores on the board Once staff understand the goals of the business, you should also give them the rules and boundaries in which the business will operate. Like a sporting team they need to understand where the sidelines are and where is out of bounds. These rules must be proven and easy to manage and drive because they need to become the rules which the team operates by every day – staff must not be allowed to fall back into old habits. After the ground-rules are in place, you should set up ‘scoreboards’ in strategic locations – if your team doesn’t know the score, how can they work towards winning the game?

Whiteboards are a cheap and easy solution. At a glance they can show relevant information such as, which jobs are scheduled for the day and their priority, weekly and monthly targets and how the team is performing against them, or target labour times for job completion against the actual time to complete the job.

Accountability In any team, whether in the sporting arena or not, the individual members must take responsibility for how they contribute.

Therefore, all staff should be accountable for their performance. Ensuring this is successful is about communication – as well

as providing them with the business goals, it’s also about letting them know where they fit in and what’s expected of them as part of the ‘team’. Done correctly, it will strengthen the ties to the team.

Part of being accountable is measuring performance and conducting reviews – you can’t improve what you don’t measure!

It’s not done to punish staff when they don’t measure up – it’s about identifying issues that may be corrected via skills training or adjustments to shop systems or processes.

Above all it’s about promoting teamwork – all winning teams are those who work together.

Team makeup It can be a tricky subject but the type of personnel you have in your team can have a significant influence on group harmony and how the overall team performs. Not all personalities get along with others and are prepared to work together to achieve the desired result. In short, you need capable people who will embrace your business culture. I see businesses who put up with inconsistent staff because they are worried about upsetting that employee or because they don’t want to lose a staff member.

In that situation you have to ask who is running the business and leading the team.

When a new staff member is required, rather than simply employing the next person who comes along, owner / managers should be looking to employ the right people with the right attitude who are going to fit into and contribute to the team culture.

Lead from the front The days are gone when any work provider will accept mediocrity. Therefore, we mustn’t accept it from ourselves, as leaders, or from our ‘team’. Embrace change, be proactive in your decision making, create great culture and strive for it to be the point of difference R – only then will you win the game!

Efficient three-layer paint repairs Understanding the three-layer paint finish and sticking to a step-by-step process goes a long way towards making these repairs straightforward, efficient and stress-free.

A

lthough three-layer (ground-coat, mid-coat and clearcoat) finishes are more common than ever, repairing them can still present a serious challenge.

However, following correct processes and techniques and gaining a little experience will soon have technicians confidently producing a high quality repair.

Identification The first crucial step is to determine whether the vehicle colour is actually a three-layer finish. These days, there are far more than just the traditional

white three-layer finishes. Many mainstream vehicles now have three-layer colours in red, blue, orange, yellow, etc. even though they may not initially appear to be this more complex paint finish. Identification should happen at the quoting stage to allow the necessary labour time to be included and to avoid costly delays later in the repair process. Extra colour matching time is generally needed and, in the paint shop, extra booth time is required to apply the larger number of coats. Often, three-layer finishes are best left to the last job of the day when booth space is not at such a premium. It’s vital to allow extra room for blending – generally one full panel – and remember both ground-coat and mid-coat need blending.

At the same time, ensure the paint team has the necessary skills to efficiently refinish the job. Especially, if it’s a new colour, it can be well worth a quick call to your PPG Territory Manager for guidance – it’s far more efficient than waiting until a redo is required!

Colour matching Since differences in application techniques can significantly impact colour accuracy for three-layer finishes it’s best to have the colour matched by the technician who will actually apply it. Gun settings and application techniques (such as distance from panel, travel speed and overlap) must be consistent between the colour matching stage and painting the vehicle.

Note: With so many variables affecting the colour match and application, PPG does not recommend edge-to-edge colour matching.

Three-layer colour spray-out process With three-layer finishes the mid-coat film build can significantly affect colour accuracy.

As more coats are applied the colour varies – darker or lighter (generally darker), tonally and in the effect level. Therefore, producing a spray-out card is absolutely essential.

The following ‘half raw / half clearcoat’ procedure is designed to avoid the common issue where application on the spray-out card tends to be slightly different (a little heavier). This method allows the ‘raw’ mid-coat match to be checked on the job before moving on to clearcoat application.

• Apply the ground-coat to opacity over the appropriate spectral grey spray-out card – dry completely.

Note: Ensure the same shade of spectral grey primer is used on the actual job.

• Apply the mid-coat as per recommended for the paint system you’re using – GLOBAL REFINISH SYSTEM® (GRS)

solvent-borne paint system or ENVIROBASE® High Performance waterborne basecoat.

Allow to dry.

• Cover one third of the spray-out card and apply another coat. Allow to dry.

• Cover two thirds of the spray-out card. Repeat the process until the card has three separate sections with an increasing number of mid-coats.

• On the back of the card, record the number of coats applied to each section.

• Cover a vertical section of about half the card and apply clearcoat over the uncovered portion.

• Using a Sun Gun, check the card against the vehicle to determine the number of midcoats required.

Efficient three-layer paint repairs

Owners: Tony Naughton and Neale Roberts • During mid-coat application in the booth, use the ‘raw’ side of the spray-out card (with a Sun Gun) to check the number of mid-coats is correct.

Once confirmed, clearcoat can be applied.

• File the spray-out card in your ‘painter’s library’.

Note: This process is also very effective for colours, such as Hyundai Veloster’s VE9 Green Apple (which, strictly speaking, isn’t a three-layer finish), as it is for the more challenging three-layer finishes, including Mazda 41V Soul Red.

Application An even application is essential because mid-coat film build can dramatically affect the end result. For example, ‘double overlaps’ at the end of gun strokes leads to areas of big colour difference, especially if duplicated over three or more mid-coat applications. Staggering start-stop positions reduces the likelihood of ‘zebra stripes’ appearing, especially when coating a full vehicle side.

Note: Both the ground-coat and mid-coat should be applied as normal, closed coats.

Also remember to rectify any defects or inclusions in the ground-coat before mid-coat application because they’re often visible through the transparent layer.

When using a solventborne paint system and when high ground-coat film builds are likely (such as when applying three-layer and VIBRANCE COLLECTION® custom paint finishes), PPG recommends adding hardener to the ground-coat.

This strengthens inter-coat adhesion and reduces the likelihood of excessive stone-chipping in vulnerable areas.

The correct ratios are in the RFU section of PAINTMANAGER® or in the specific PDS.

Blending – ground-coat The secret is in precise and progressive blending of both the ground-coat and midcoat within a specified area. Also, if applying Wet-On-Wet primer, it should be bended into the adjoining panels as well. If three mid-coats are required to achieve a colour match, the ground-coat will need to be blended in three stages. Mentally divide the blend panel into five or six equal sections and blend the let-down ground-coat within the first section. Use reverse blending techniques to contain overspray and prevent droplets being pushed to the panel end.

Performed correctly, this process produces a very soft, progressive transition of the ground-coat into the existing colour which is the key to success when blending three-layer finishes.

Blending – mid-coat Blending the mid-coat is far simpler, since conventional blending techniques can be used, however precision is still important.

The first coat is taken to the end of the first section of blended ground-coat, the second coat to the end of the second section and the third to the end of the third section.

Be sure to tack-rag the back of the blend area in between all coats in order to remove over-spray and avoid ‘profiling’ after the clearcoat is applied. Take care to avoid excessively increasing mid-coat film build as this is the main cause of darkening of the blend edge. High ground-coat film-builds often occur during three-layer applications so it’s important to allow extra flash off time prior to applying the specified PPG clearcoat to prevent solvent entrapment from causing durability issues.

oth Neale and Tony have a long history of ‘enhancing’ their company vehicles, including their latest rides.

Neale’s Amarok had travelled just 200km when it was dismantled and painted inside and out (except engine bay). He actually developed the colour – he’s dubbed it ‘Kaleidoscope’ – using ENVIROBASE® High Performance waterborne basecoat and the spectacular Silver Prism tinter.

“Adding different tinters to Silver Prism changed its appearance dramatically. With ‘Kaleidoscope’ we’ve created a clean, light golden colour that features a rainbow effect under sunlight or artificial light.”

Tony’s VF Commodore SS Ute went through a similar process using the Envirobase High Performance paint system, except it incorporates ‘CRYSTALLANCE™ glass flake from the VIBRANCE COLLECTION® custom paint finishes. The strips use rose and violet tinters with Silver Prism added. Efficient repair practices and environmental sustainability can go hand-in-hand and MICRA Accident Repair Centre is living proof.

D

espite being tucked away near Launceston in northern Tasmania, MICRA Accident Repair Centre has become an industry talking point across the region. After completing a new, state-of-the-art facility for general accident repairs in mid-2010, owners Craig Carey and Michael Shelton have recently added a second ‘fast-track shop’ for smaller repairs.

As well as fitting out both facilities with the latest in repair technology and getting help from PPG’s MVP Team to ensure the most efficient processes are used, the aim was always to design in as many eco-friendly features as possible. Do the sums on cost

versus return and it makes perfect sense, according to Craig.

“Building a facility that’s more sustainable from an environmental perspective actually leads to a better business outcome. There are always extra business costs that really add up – from water and energy to dealing with waste and even sewerage.

Take something as simple as cardboard, for example. It would cost us hundreds of dollars per month to get it collected.

We’ve purchased a cardboard compactor which bundles it so we can deliver it to the local recycler and remove that cost from our business.”

During the design process, Craig says, it was straightforward to do their own research on sustainable ideas.

They contacted local suppliers of the different technologies and systems available and had in-depth discussions about the benefits and costs so they could weigh up the best option for the business.

Basically, it came down to assessing the cost of installation against the ongoing saving benefit in order to get a timeframe for the return on investment.

“The return on investment is slower with some and quicker on others but it’s all about having a ‘green’ footprint.

“For example, our workshops run extremely lean in every sense.

We’ve installed gas-fired infrared paint curing technology which is very lean – it uses only around one third of the gas of a conventional oven. Fitting a thinners recycling station in the paint shop saves money by cleaning all our waste thinner so we can use it for gun wash, etc. We also

spent quite a lot on LED lighting throughout the workshop, offices, toilets and storeroom but our lighting is now much more energy efficient. We even fitted push-button light and fan switches in the toilets to prevent them being left on when no one is there.

“We’ve designed the facility to have very little impact on the local infrastructure.

For example, we store 100,000 litres of captured rainwater onsite. It costs nothing to store the water – there’s just the initial outlay which we recoup fairly quickly. Apart from fire hoses we have to have by law, we don’t impact on the town water supply at all so the big water cost we had at our previous facility is no longer there.”

“MICRA doesn’t even impact on the local sewerage system. All our waste water – including from toilets and our two car washes – goes through a triple interceptor which separates the sludge before it passes through two different recycling systems. One flushes all the bad stuff out and the next one treats it. From there it goes into about 700m of underground sprinklers which water our gardens and lawn – that’s why they always look green when you drive past.

“I think the biggest saver is solar electricity and upgrading our system is my next project. We currently have a 15 kilowatt system and we’re looking to increase it to 100 kilowatts. It’s a no-brainer because even if you borrow all the money to pay for it (it’s about $100,000), it will pay itself off in around five years! Once it’s paid off you’re basically getting electricity for free and the panels come with a 25 year warranty and the inverter has a 15 year warranty.”

Trying to maximise sustainability has paid off in a number of ways for MICRA. The business won the ‘Best Environmental Practices Award’ with the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce, not once but twice.

While it does takes some effort, Craig sees being sustainable as the way forward – it can even change mindsets.

“As well as making our shop leaner, all these sustainable features have helped staff think more about being cleaner and greener.

It’s taken some time but if you come into the workshop now you would find it very clean and tidy. From a business perspective,

While no one has promised to give us work just because we’re lean and green in our processes, I think that in today’s marketplace most of the work providers are looking out for shops that are progressive in that area.”

“Designing and building these two facilities has been a real journey. Although we still have some work to do, Michael and I feel like we’re in a pretty good place!”

Forty years strong Following its founding principles of innovative design, high quality and excellent durability, Vawdrey Australia has become an outstanding success story that spans over 40 years.

L

ike virtually no place on earth, Australia throws up a unique set of challenges for the semi-trailers which are used to haul loads across the country.

A three pronged assault of rough road surfaces (even on major highways!), heavy loads and speed are sure to quickly show up any flaws in design or construction.

It can be a nightmare for imported products that haven’t been designed to cope but it’s in this harsh environment where locally built Vawdrey Australia products have thrived.

Indeed, its reputation for developing and building exceptionally reliable semi-trailers has seen it become a supplier of choice to large multi-national fleets and smaller local operators alike.

In 2013, Vawdrey passed an astonishing milestone when the 30,000th unit rolled out of the company’s manufacturing facility, in the Melbourne suburb of Dandenong South.

Hot on its heels came 40th Anniversary celebrations in 2014. Although

the company’s birthday has been celebrated every year, this was special according to founder, Mick Vawdrey.

“We threw a party for our customers and about 350 people came along. There was a video presentation and a lot of old photos – it was really good to look back to what we were building in the early days compared with what we build now.”

Forty years ago, as he fought to establish his business, Mick faced plenty of hurdles.

After the qualified plumber / welder broke his spine in a car accident and became wheelchair bound, he began working at a company which built truck bodies before deciding to open his own business.

“It was a bit daunting – one morning I had an empty factory that I had to fill with work. The selling part was the hardest part because 40 years ago people weren’t wheelchair conscious so it was often difficult to get into buildings to see the managers you needed to.

Having said that, I think my greatest asset was that, because I’d broken my back, I couldn’t work in the business so I worked ‘on’ the business.

We started by building trays and van bodies for one-tonners and small trucks. When I started I wanted Vawdrey to be the biggest in Australia and we achieved that about 10 years down the track. Although we’re the second biggest today, we’re still the country’s largest independent trailer builder.”

In 1975, Russell Baker joined Mick and the two formed a strong partnership that lasted until Russell’s retirement in late 2006.

A pivotal moment came in the early 1990s – having established an excellent reputation for manufacturing rigid truck bodies, customers encouraged Vawdrey to take on the semi-trailer market.

“It was a massive decision because of the investment involved and the steep learning curve. We built the best truck bodies in Australia but there’s a big difference to building a good semi-trailer – we had to lift our game again. We made mistakes but we learnt from every one of them. That’s when we moved to production lines instead of one person working on a job from start to finish. What we’ve done is broken the build process down so that one person might be building chassis rails, another builds trailer fronts, another the backs and so on and that’s all they do.”

Raw materials (various lengths and thicknesses of steel) are delivered to Vawdrey’s 6.5 hectare facility where they are cut to size and welded together on special

jigs to form the basic semi-trailer structure.

There are a number of ‘workstations’ on the 220 metre by 80 metre production floor and each trailer advances one workstation each day. This is just one of the factors which allows Vawdrey to efficiently build a vast range of semi-trailer configurations,

including B-doubles, B-triples, buckleless curtainsiders, dog trailers, drop decks, dry freights, flat tops, mezzanine deck floors, refrigerated bodies, skels, tags, tri-axle trailers and swingliners. With its in-house engineering team allowing it to adapt very quickly, the aim has always been to give each client the best possible solution even though their needs can be quite different.

“One of the reasons we’ve been so successful is that we don’t standardise our trailer designs. Every one of our customers has a different use for a trailer so we’re happy to modify our designs and innovate to build exactly what the particular customer wants. That’s why this place is always busy!”

Today, Vawdrey employs around 350 staff Australia wide, of which approximately 280 work in the production facility where they manufacture about 1500 trailers per year. This includes 22 in the paint team who look after six enormous spray booths. Right from the beginning Vawdrey established a strong partnership with PPG but, in around 2006 when Mick felt the relationship was a little stale, the company tried another paint supplier for a short time.

“It was probably the silliest thing we ever did!

Support is everything in business. I know with our customers – if a trailer has an issue we just fix it and work out what the cause was later because if the trailer isn’t on the road it isn’t earning money for them. It’s the same with PPG service. Even if I rang Andy (Brough, PPG Commercial Transport Key Account Manager) in the middle of the night, I’m sure he would be straight down here to help.”

According to Andy, PPG and Vawdrey now enjoy a closer relationship than ever, including having a dedicated PPG staff member onsite to manage stock and purchasing.

“Part of our task is to monitor waste and ensure the right products are delivered at exactly the right time.

Effectively, it’s an ‘On Time, In Full’ service solution which means Vawdrey doesn’t have to stock lots of product and that’s better for cash flow. We also help them streamline the painting process with things like high efficiency Wet-On-Wet processes which supports productivity and throughput. For example, the simplest paint scheme on a Vawdrey trailer is two colours, however it’s often three or four colours and it can go up to seven but using

these processes means it can still be done in one day!”

According to Mick, appearance is a vital part of the Vawdrey quality package.

“It has got to the stage over the past few years where people treat their trailers exactly the same as they do their car – they ‘bling’ them up and want them to look fantastic. Thanks to PPG, I believe we have the best paintwork of all the trailers on the market.”

Mick’s son, Paul, joined the company in the 1990s and, as the National Sales Manager, has become an extremely successful sales person. The company structure has also bred a variety of highly experienced management staff, many of whom have worked their way up from the production floor. The fact that they effectively look after the day-to-day operations of the business has meant that Mick no longer needs to be at the office 24/7. Having said that, even after 40 years in business, Mick’s drive and determination to succeed seems to be as strong as ever.

“I probably should retire but I don’t want to. I like coming in here and going out into the factory. I have a production manager and a general manager to keep everything running smoothly and all everyone has to remember is the same motto Vawdrey has used for its entire 40 year history – the R customer always comes first!”
