ith the support of a range of sponsors, including PPG, a talented team of young engineers has given Melbourne University’s ‘MUR Motorsports Team’ its highest ever placing at the annual Formula SAE competition. This global Formula gives engineering students the opportunity to put theory into practice by building a low cost, race car and then competing with it. inning Australia’s premier drag racing category once is a major achievement. Triumphing three times in a row is an extraordinary feat and, at Sydney Dragway in November, PPG sponsored, Darren Morgan Racing did just that. In what’s regarded as one of the toughest seasons ever, Darren Morgan won four of the 11 events to be crowned ANDRA Pro Series Top Fuel Champion for the third consecutive time (making him a four-time champion in total!). For the
placings, including 3rd overall and the ‘Bosch Instrumentation Award’. For over a decade PPG has provided products and technical support for coating the car’s different substrates which ensures the team always presents an outstanding, professional appearance. MUR Motorsports Team spokesperson, Lavnish Prashar, says the aim for 2014 is to continue the momentum. “The partnerships with our sponsors are vital to the success of this team. Last year we developed a lot of new concepts, implemented them on the car and it was very successful. Our 2014 goal is for further refinement of those engineering concepts and add a brand new R aerodynamics package.”

The real credit has to go to our team who are so passionate and dedicated. It’s all about preparation and right from the get-go we’ve tried to set the bar high. For example, we aimed to have the best presented car and with its PPG paintwork it looks awesome so we definitely achieved that.” Along with the support of his loyal team and sponsors, Darren is looking for backing to have a crack at an unprecedented fourth title in a row. “We have the team and equipment to go fast – we just need a R major sponsor to help.”

very day we hear about rapid industry change and there’s no denying it. However, it’s how you deal with those changes that determine the potential for future business success. Some convince themselves it’s a temporary issue and just continue as usual – not a strategy I recommend! Others go looking for a magic fix. I’ve lost count of the number of times repairers have told me they need to set up a ‘rapid’ repair shop. My first question is, ‘what do you mean by a rapid repair shop’. Answers range from simply putting up a rapid repair sign, through to focusing on lean methods to speed up processes. The second option is great but even the most efficient bodyshop is useless if you don’t have vehicles to repair. Whatever the strategy, it must be a holistic approach which is why I recommend our MVP article (pg 24) – it explains how our Turn Key Options can help unlock the potential in your business. Ever noticed how successful business people tend to surround themselves with successful people, including their suppliers? Companies, such as Mercedes-Benz, Ford, GM, Chrysler and the vast majority of global OEMs, have ongoing partnerships with PPG (pg26) because it generates success for both organisations. That’s worth considering when you choose your own R supplier partners.

Trusted from
start to finish All new to the market, the Startline brand introduces a cost effective range of everyday products you can trust to help you get the job done with no-fuss efficiency.
T
rust is a vital factor in the business environment. In particular, it’s essential to have trust in your supplier partners. One of the key considerations when choosing a supplier is that the brand or organisation is going to be able to consistently deliver what your business needs, when you need it and at a competitive price. Anything else and there’s potential for the performance of your business to suffer. This was the catalyst for the creation of the Startline brand. The aim is to put certainty back into the selection process when it comes to choosing high volume, everyday refinish sector consumables. With Startline you get the confidence and peace-of-mind of knowing that you’re getting tried and tested products that you and your team can rely on to deliver dependable performance at a value for money price.
Tried and tested Over the last few years, the local market has been inundated with new brands, many of which have an uncertain pedigree. Attractive pricing is generally used to lure people into giving them a go but the results can be hit and miss. Frustratingly, some brands have a couple of decent products but will then let you down with a host
of others that turn out to be a waste of time. Some brands appear to be fine in the beginning until product inconsistencies creep in. For example, one batch may work satisfactorily but, for some unknown reason, the next batch is not up to the same standard of performance and it’s your work that suffers. While Startline is an all new brand, the difference is that it takes full advantage of the vast resources and technical expertise of PPG. Although the Startline brand was created locally, the development
FEATURE STORY 7
team was able to tap into PPG’s extensive world-wide network. Those contacts allowed them to scour the globe to search out the right manufacturers who could reliably produce high performance products that didn’t cost the earth. Having gathered a list of potential products to join the range, the Startline Team moved to the next phase – development and testing. Here they were able to draw on PPG’s local resources, including the refinish laboratory at PPG’s Melbourne headquarters, the
region-wide PPG Training Team and network of training centres and other staff who have a strong refinish background. Armed with an in-depth understanding of the painting process and an extensive experience of the local market, this team set about thoroughly testing every single Startline product. Many passed with flying colours, some needed a few modifications from the manufacturers to achieve the stringent criteria, while a few were rejected as not being up to the high standard required.

start to finish The exhaustive research and development program also saw the Startline products extensively evaluated against other competitor products which are already in the market. Importantly, all the tests were conducted in real-world workshop situations to ensure the products would perform up to the unique requirements of the local industry. As an added bonus, Startline products are also a perfect fit for the latest in best practice surface preparation and paint refinish processes allowing you to make the most of the productivity and quality benefits they offer. When the label says Startline you know it’s a product you can trust to get the job done efficiently and effectively, day-in, day-out!
Backup and support The shine quickly goes off a brand when an issue arises and you find there’s little or no backup support to help you sort it out. The disruptions it can cause to your business make it well worth asking the question before you purchase a product – who is supporting this brand? In the case of Startline, you can count on a high level of support no matter where you
are in the region. That includes expert in-the-field support, as well as the convenience of a customer service hotline, spare parts when required and a Startline website www.startlineproducts.com.au to help you choose products, find the nearest distributor and access other useful information.
Getting on the Startline You will find the Startline brand at a network of reputable distributors throughout New Zealand and Australia – just look for the distinctive purple coloured labelling which is consistent across the brand. As well as accessing the growing product range, you will be able to get advice on which Startline product is best suited to your application. Note: A range of SATA spray equipment, Mirka surface finishing abrasives and tools and PPG Plus products will continue to be available from PPG Plus Distributors.
FEATURE STORY 9

Even now, the Startline team is continuing to search out leading technologies from around the world. This will ensure a constant stream of new and innovative products join the brand to provide real benefits to end users. Once people sample the value and performance, Startline products are sure to become a favourite!

George Askew and son, Peter, combine over 75 years of industry know-how and they’ve learned you can’t rest on your laurels – you have to keep finding new ways to improve.
George says he and Peter are always reading about and observing what’s going on around the industry and they constantly look for ways to do things better. Despite having to put themselves under financial pressure, they jumped at the opportunity to purchase the premises. “We weren’t going to spend money on the premises when it wasn’t ours so we’d been pushing the landlord to sell for year and all of a sudden it happened. Financially it’s been difficult but we’re slowly working our way back.” Although limited by the funds they could afford to invest, George and Peter were finally able to make some significant upgrades. Along with replacing the old spray booth with a new modern one and a prep bay, the pair made a radical change to the workshop layout by reversing the location

ven after 54 years in the industry, George Askew is still passionate about collision repair. That’s coming in handy because he sees real challenges for Mona Vale Smash Repairs which he and his son, Peter, own and operate in the Northern Beaches region on Sydney’s fringe. Indeed, George believes the number of repairers in the area will be whittled down
considerably over the next couple of years. However, like most aspects of his career, George has plans in place to ensure Mona Vale Smash Repairs not only survives but is still a healthy business when he hands the reins over to Peter. George was a late starter when it came to shop ownership. He left school in 1959 at 15 years of age to become a motor mechanic in his native United Kingdom and ended up running several businesses that also included panel beating and spray painting. He continued to manage collision centres after moving to Australia in 1974 but in the late 1990s found himself between jobs. “I was looking hard but I couldn’t seem to find employment so Peter said, what’s wrong with having your own business? Back in 1999, Peter and I bought an existing bodyshop and started Mona Vale Smash Repairs together. Peter really is the backbone of this place – he has a great attitude and a good personality for it.” Both men have a passion for doing things the right way and that naturally set them on the path to continuous improvement.
of the panel and paint shops – panel is now at the front and paint at the rear. Before starting the modifications the pair stood back and studied how they wanted work to flow in order to get the maximum efficiency benefits from the compact site. “We’re still a little cramped but we’re looking for ways and means to make sure everything works smoothly. We’re just finalising the floor layout and once we’re confident it’s what we want we’ll put the lines on the floor. There are two sides to the

workshop – heavy repairs and light repairs. The heavy side is just about finalised and on the light side we’re considering putting in speed-benches – not necessarily for the repair but to lift the car up so it’s comfortable for the guys to disassemble and assemble, rather than having to lie on the floor.” Equipment has also become a focus in the search for efficiency. “These days, the times we’re given to do tasks are very, very tight so you have to find ways to achieve them. We’re always trying to encourage the boys even with purchasing equipment. For example, electric screwdrivers and wrenches make disassembling and assembling easier and faster. found with PPG. I’d been involved with waterborne in the past so I knew the principle was good and when Envirobase HP came out I asked for a demo. Once I looked at it I was convinced it was the right way to go. The finish is correct colour-wise, blend-outs are easier and it’s at least as quick as solvent-borne but I’m sure we’ll advance from there. I also think it’s cleaner – everyone is concerned about the planet so it’s a good selling point to customers. We get PPG training fairly regularly – we actually had a PPG trainer in last week. A new painter was starting so I advised PPG and a PPG trainer spent a couple of days showing him through the system.”

The aim is to keep everything uniform and we know we’re going to get the results we want from a SATA gun.” Mona Vale Smash Repairs has been a PPG customer for around 12 years and actually switched to PPG’s advanced waterborne basecoat system, Envirobase High Performance (HP), about five years ago, shortly after its launch in Australia. “You need to choose a quality product with good backup and that’s what we’ve

There are eight staff on the workshop floor – four panel beaters, three painters and a detailer – as well as Peter, George and an office manager. George says they’ve tried to keep clear communication going. “We try to explain all the changes to the staff before we implement them and I don’t mind objections but only if they can come up with a better solution. Our very next step is to put our policies and procedures up in big bold writing to show how we want to operate as a company. For example, we wanted a standard pattern for our colour matching procedure. We wrote down what we did, then streamlined it and put the step-by-step process on a large board so everyone could see it and know that this was the way we operate. I don’t want people saying, I like to do it this way or that way. We don’t want to deviate from this process because this is the process we know that works.” What becomes clear is that George and Peter have a relentless drive for efficiency. The measures the pair are putting in place are really paying off and helping them carve out their own niche in the smash repair industry. Having highly experienced tradesmen who can confidently repair all prestige vehicles, along with the most extensively damaged mainstream models, has seen Mona Vale Smash Repairs establish good working

relationships with many work providers, as well as being appointed as a Subaru Preferred Repairer. At 69 years old, George isn’t quite ready to hand total control to Peter who’s just turned 40, although he can see the writing on the wall. “I think Peter will take over within a couple of years but I still want to be an active part of the business, even if I’m a cleaner or a shoulder to lean on. It still puts a smile on my face when I see a car we’ve repaired R ready to be picked up by the owner.”

s you’d expect, everything is on a grand scale at the 2014 International Truck, Trailer & Equipment Show (ITTES). Indeed, the fourth running of the bi-annual event is so big it takes a venue as vast as the 19 hectare Melbourne Showgrounds to hold it. The previous event in 2012 saw over 400 exhibitors and drew record crowds with visitors from 45 countries. Thanks to a reconfigured Melbourne Showgrounds layout and a brand new exhibition facility, 2014 is set to be even bigger and better. The aim is to provide vehicle operators with the opportunity to get together with major industry suppliers so they can network and make informed buying decisions. For 2014, the adjusted format – Thursday 3rd to Sunday 6th April – makes it more accessible to owner operators and fleet personnel. Visitors will be able to view an estimated half a billion dollars worth of equipment and technology which showcases everything from road-train configurations through to the latest CT industry IT, as well as service provider. With its long running commitment to the commercial transport sector, it was natural that PPG would be a participant at the ITTES. Along with PPG’s CT friendly product range, the region wide PPG FleetPool Network will be represented by Melbourne repairer, Truckrite, and PPG’s support for the Australian Heavy Vehicle Repairers Association (AHVRA) will also see this important organisation on display at a 9m x 3m stand. Throughout the event visitors can drop in to see:
PPG • Colour swatches for the Delfleet Evolution paint system which was specially formulated for heavy vehicle applications. • Demonstrations of the RapidMatch X-5 spectrophotometer and PPG’s PaintManager® colour retrieval system. • The long list of vehicle OEMs that have issued approvals for PPG products. • A guided tour through the FleetPool website. • The annual PPG FleetPool conference will be run at the same time to give members a chance to visit the ITTES.
Truckrite • A photographic display of recent projects, along with a video presentation which showcases how this skilled and dedicated team goes about doing everything from truck and chassis repairs to signwriting.
AHVRA • Information and displays showing how this dedicated industry organisation goes about lobbying for safer vehicle repairs R and a repairers code of conduct. hen Adrian Woodley pulled the covers off his amazing ’68 Camaro at Summernats 2013 it sent fans into a frenzy. Crowds were thick around the car throughout the entire event and the judges noticed, too, honouring with a placing in the ‘Top 20’ overall. Amazingly, the project began with much more modest ambitions, according to the 30 year old Auto-Electrician. “I’ve worked on lots of custom cars for other people but then not had the reward at the end so I wanted to do one for myself. I started out to just build a car to take to the Summernats Powercruise but as it progressed the standard got better and better and I didn’t want to go thrashing it. When he bought it, the car was almost unrecognisable as a Camaro. The previous owner had cut it up to build a drag car so there was no floor, boot, wheel tubs, etc. Apart from buying a few panels, such as front guards and

the nosecone, Adrian set about fabricating much of it himself. The ambitious concept was based on his childhood memories. “I used to see model cars in the shops, like Hot Wheels cars with oversized wheels and exaggerated guards, and I wanted something like that – a bit outrageous and draws a crowd. It took two years spending pretty much every night in the shed working to get it finished. From start to finish only five people touched the car so it was a bit taxing but doing most of the work myself made it easy on the pocket so I can’t complain.” The amazing attention to detail includes a flat underfloor (brake and fuel lines, etc. are concealed so only the exhaust and tail-shaft run under the car), a transmission tunnel consisting of 96 pieces so that it closely hugs the gearbox and a custom firewall that took three attempts to get exactly perfect. Adrian even built the twin-turbo 540ci big block V8 from a short motor, in his home shed. “I got the turbos custom made so they were as symmetrical as possible. Essentially, they’re T6 truck turbos with the fins custom made so they spool up faster to reduce turbo lag. They hit full boost at about 3500rpm to 3800rpm and it’s a bit of a ‘light switch’!” When it came to choosing paint to match the ballistic performance there was no doubt it would be PPG, however Adrian’s colour selection initially caught people by surprise. “The Z11 Camaro pace car for the American NASCAR series in the late ‘60s, early ‘70s was white with orange trim – I saw the colour scheme on a model car and it really grabbed your attention. I talked to Tony Naughton (PPG Business Development Manager NSW) – he helped with technical advice

and we threw around some ideas. We decided on Snow Flake White – a nice clean white from the Mazda6 – and PPG Vibrance Liquid Crystal ‘O-So-Orange’ for the stripes.” Despite being just a third year spray painting apprentice, Adrian trusted his younger brother, Blake, with the job. Every weekend for around nine months, Blake made the three hour drive from his home in Wollongong to Adrian’s backyard workshop in Canberra and back again. “It was the first full paintjob Blake had ever done so to do inside, outside and underneath was a big effort on his behalf. PPG gave him a lot of help, including training and advice. When I saw the job I thought, wow, this is pretty flash – straight off the gun he’d really outdone himself.” It also silenced the doubters, says Adrian. “Almost everyone said I was crazy
to go with that colour scheme but it put them in their place when it was unveiled – the crowd loved it! To be able to build this car on a budget, at home in the shed as a couple of amateurs against the big guns was pretty awesome. When you look at the difference in dollar value, even to be in the same room as them was pretty cool.” Twelve months down the track, the Camaro has been a major attraction at shows up and down the east coast and the brothers have moved to Queensland’s Gold Coast where they continue to work on cars and plan to open their own custom shop. “You look at the top custom builders and think they’re out of reach but they’re only out of reach if you don’t go for it. We’ll give
custom work a go and see what we can make of it – Blake has already started his own business, called Deluxe Body Werx. The only downside of the Camaro is that it can’t be road registered so my next one will be bigger and badder and one I can enjoy on the road!” R

ith the launch of PPG’s new ColorMobile® software application, it’s now possible to have free access at anytime to the latest ‘prime’, ‘variants’ and ‘specials’ colour formulas on PPG’s vast database, anywhere there’s an Internet connection, such as a Wi-Fi network or mobile phone coverage. It’s ideal for staying connected! Although it sounds like a mobile phone ‘app’, it’s not. It’s actually a web-based software application which has been optimised for mobile (small screen) devices, including smart phones and tablets.
Just set up a shortcut on the phone ‘desktop’ and tap to enter. ColorMobile® is security protected so you do need to have a registered user ID and password. Once logged in it allows quick and easy mobile retrieval of the most up-to-date PPG colour information because it’s connecting directly to the PPG database. Being based on PPG’s industry leading colour retrieval software, PaintManager®, it features a user-friendly screen and functionality, including streamlined search parameters based on a user’s individual preferences. General search results may be obtained through a variety of categories such as vehicle manufacturer, OEM / brand codes, model, year, colour description and others. Once results are presented, the user can expand the ‘formula details’ screen to view additional information, such as formula data and undercoat recommendations. ColorMobile® is all about offering unmatched
convenience for anyone requiring immediate access to vital colour information. Given the popularity of modern smart phones and the fact people generally have their phone with them, the innovative application is perfect for estimators, distributors, technical representatives, paint shop managers or anyone else who needs to look up data when they’re away from a desktop computer. There’s also a handy email capability built in which mean you don’t even need to have an email account attached to your phone. As a result, it’s a simple matter to lookup colour formulation information and email it to wherever it’s needed, whether that’s across town or on the other side of the world. Using PPG’s RapidMatch™ system has significantly reduced colour matching time for many customers – now there’s another clever new function to minimise it even further.
I
f you’re using PPG’s PaintManager® software and the built-in RapidMatch™ electronic colour identification system, you’re already enjoying the advantages of new-age colour matching. You will be familiar with the process of taking a reading of the vehicle’s paintwork with PPG’s spectrophotometer device, the RapidMatch™ X-5, and then interfacing with the clever search functionality in PaintManager®. In most instances, a ‘Code’ search using the vehicle’s paint code, is the fast and efficient way to select the closest colour formulation from the ‘prime’, ‘variants’ and ‘specials’. Indeed, when using Envirobase High Performance waterborne basecoat system and the ‘match rating’ meets a specific tolerance and there’s room to blend, the technician can simply mix that formula and paint the vehicle – there’s no need to do a spray-out card to check the colour. However, there is the odd occasion when the ‘match rating’ isn’t acceptable and it’s here that the new ‘Filtered’ search offers an excellent solution.
filters the results based on their compatibility with those effects pigments. Given there are literally tens of thousands of formulations in the colour database, the Filtered search will often find a formulation with a match rating that’s more suited to the vehicle on your paint shop floor. And that can save significant colour matching time.
Step-by-step in PaintManager® If you have performed a ‘Code’ search and it’s unsuccessful, you can use the following steps for a ‘Filtered’ search. 1. From the variant selector result screen, choose the ‘anchor’, then the Filtered search button (F6).
2. Results will be sorted, first by compatibility with the effect pigments, and then by their match rating value. The column marked ‘Effect Compatibility’ will display the results of the pigment effects comparison. 3. To help you determine effect compatibility, the display can read ‘more than anchor’, ‘some of anchor’ or ‘same as anchor’ to indicate whether each formulation has more, some or the same effects pigments as the anchor colour. 4. Any selected matches found are automatically compared with the anchor formulation. You can then select the desired match and proceed to the R normal formula screen.
Filtered search The innovative software behind the RapidMatch™ Filtered search option takes into account the effects BEFORE Filtered Search pigments used in the vehicle’s prime formulation (or ‘anchor’). It then widens the search to cover the entire PPG colour database but

Opportunity knocks
If you’ve made the decision to take your career in a new direction, one of the vast range of opportunities available at PPG could be just what you’re looking for.
P
eople are the key to any business and PPG is no different.
The foundation of over 130 years of success is built on employing talented people and helping them develop to their full potential. With literally tens of thousands of staff around the globe, there are always opportunities opening up which makes PPG a very attractive option for someone looking for a change of career path. For those coming from the refinish sector, the traditional ways of joining are in the roles of Technical Demonstrator, Territory Manager and Business Development Manager. Unfortunately, some people hold off applying because they mistakenly think they don’t fit the
criteria, says Emma McNeill, PPG Human Resources Talent Attraction Specialist. “Typically, we attract spray painters from the workshop floor who are looking for a career change – they still want to be involved in the refinish industry but not necessarily ‘on the tools’. However, some people don’t apply for PPG jobs because they think they need to have done years of spray painting and have some demonstration experience in order to be, say, a Technical Demonstrator when, in reality, we’re just looking for very good spray painting skills. Whether you have two years or 20 years of experience, it doesn’t matter
– it’s about having the base knowledge needed to be a Technical Demonstrator.” Along with technical knowledge, a good skill set includes a confident manner, good communication skills and the ability to build relationships, as well as tenacity and resilience. Once accepted, new staff aren’t thrown in the deep end – there’s plenty of ongoing training and support provided. PPG also encourages gender diversity, says Emma. “There are lots of talented women, as well as men, in technical roles throughout the region and that’s further promoted with initiatives such as PPG’s Women’s Leadership Council. We see the ability to train and promote women in a male dominated industry as an opportunity not to be missed.” Whether you’re from the refinish industry or have a scientific background, the diverse range of departments within PPG gives plenty of scope to expand your horizons. “The beauty of PPG is that it’s a large company and that provides opportunities. You don’t have to stay in one area of PPG for your whole career – there are many R different paths to follow!” For more information or to see the current roles being offered, go to jobs.ppg.com click on ‘Jobs by location’ and select Australia or New Zealand.

Hogging the limelight
Taking Harley-Davidson individuality to the next level via a sophisticated paint job can be as simple as combining PPG products with a little detailed planning and execution.
T
he long and unique heritage of Harley-Davidson can be an irresistible drawcard to the brand. The sight, the sound and the lifestyle of owning a Harley attracts many people who are looking for something that’s definitely not run-of-themill. However, despite the distinctive image and high quality factory PPG paintwork that comes standard with every Harley, some owners want even more individuality for their ride. Often this involves adding some chrome accessories or other bling
but arguably the most effective method is a fresh paintjob, particularly when the bike has lost its showroom lustre. Whether it’s your own Harley or a job for a customer, John Hristias (PPG Business Support Manager Asia/Pacific) says it can be a fairly straightforward task for a reasonably skilled painter. And, because PPG’s refinish paint systems combine perfectly with the Vibrance Collection of special effects finishes, the PPG range not only makes it easier, it also give extraordinary versatility to
create exactly what’s required. To prove it, John recently gave a Harley tank and guards a new lease of life. Here’s how he did it.
TALKING TRAINING 21
Plan to succeed In this instance, the brief from the owner was to freshen up the look of the bike with something ‘different’ but not too wild. It was about creating a sophisticated paintjob that would grab people’s attention and be admired. With these sorts of jobs, the actual painting is the easy bit – it’s the planning process that you need to focus on before even thinking about picking up a spray gun. Like pretty much any job – get the planning sorted out and the rest is easy. The question I asked myself was – how do I take the existing tank and guards and deliver what the owner wants without going too over the top? The first thing I did was place the two guards and tank in order on the bench, along with a photo of the bike and the Harley badge to visualise how the new colour would tie in with the existing chrome and black components. The owner wanted a red colour so I began working on that. In the PPG range you’ve got the option to use Vibrance special effects pigments in combination with standard refinish system tinters and that’s exactly what I did. In this
case, I used Silver Prism tinter from the GRS paint system, along with Radiance™ II Candy, Ditzler® Big Flake™ and Flamboyance from the Vibrance Collection. I tried a number of different variations – firstly, on sprayout cards and then when I got it close I applied it on frogs (small curved car shapes). I decided against pinstripes – I think they’re common and very clichéd on Harleys. Also, I didn’t want to detract from the Silver Prism – it creates a very cool halo of its own! Overall, I tried to stick to the ‘less is more’ philosophy, such as the ghost shadowing effect which isn’t meant to be ‘in-your-face’. The result is subtle and sophisticated and a paintjob that keeps people coming back for more as they discover new highlights.
The process This paintjob does have quite a lot of technical work involved so it’s not really for beginners. However, the best way to learn is to experiment so why not give it a go as a way to improve your skills. Using PPG’s Vibrance
Collection, combined with Mirka products and SATA spray guns, helps makes the job that much easier (and more spectacular!). Why not contact your nearest PPG Training Centre to book a training course.

Next was ‘blue tone red’ from the Radiance™ II Candy range. It was mixed at 8% concentration level in the 895 binder and five quite wet coats were applied.

The final step was to give it another application of clearcoat, known as a flowcoat, using a SATA RP 4000 1.1 nozzle – this is a good size for custom work and, particularly, small parts. In this case it eliminated the need for polishing to flatten R any peel – there was none!
I didn’t want sharp graphics so I masked up a simple design that used the natural contours and features of the bike. STEP

he inspiration came when I went to a Harley rally and parked amongst around 500 bikes. I looked around and they were all black! I was happy to let John decide on the colour and I’m glad I did – I absolutely love it! The overall quality is amazing – I’ve never seen paint like that ‘off the gun’ before. The other thing is the colour shift – it’s fascinating to see the colour continually changing with the light conditions.

potential
hat can repairers expect in 2014? More changes, it seems. For example, major work providers are busy issuing approvals to collision centres they’ve chosen to work with. Unfortunately, this also means some repairers will miss out. Either way, it’s no time to ease off on the drive to increase productivity, says PPG’s MVP Manager ANZ, Greg Tunks. Of all the many PPG Turn Key Options (a toolbox of ready-to-go business
support solutions) available to customers, he says, one of the best ways to unlock the potential in a business is an onsite assessment.
Making the most of the potential Visiting a collision centre to make an assessment might be one of the PPG Turn Key Options but, to me and the rest of the regional MVP Team, it’s just another part
Options, an onsite assessment by an MVP specialist is still one of the most fundamental and powerful tools you can get to tune your business for maximum performance. of the everyday support we provide to customers. At the moment we have some repairers who have received work provider approval and they’re looking for help to efficiently ramp up their workflow. We’re also supporting collision centres that didn’t get approval. As they look for alternative sources of work we can help them improve their work efficiency and make themselves more attractive to other work providers. In general, work providers want
MVP EFFICIENCY 25
to partner with consistently well run businesses because that delivers a consistent repair outcome. Often, owners know they need some assistance but aren’t sure where to start. An MVP collision centre assessment is perfect because it’s basically a health check for the business. The first step is to visit, have a tour of the facility with the owner and listen to the issues they’re having. We’ll then make an appointment to do more in-depth analysis over anything from half a day to three days. We start with basics, such as: • The physical state of the premises, buildings, equipment, etc. to see how attractive they are to customers. • The number of repairs being produced versus the number of staff. Through MVP we’ve gathered a huge amount of data so we know what the benchmark should be for any size of shop. • Generally, we take a ‘snapshot’ of the businesses financial condition rather than do an in-depth analysis. • We spend a lot of time on the workshop floor physically watching what’s going on and searching for the root cause of any issues. • Talking to the shopfloor staff, as well as the managers. Indeed, staff give us vital feedback on what’s actually going on because they’re working in the system every day. We aim to get staff onboard – we’re invading their space so we explain what’s going on and any potential changes.

State of the premises. How attractive are they to customers.
Number of repairs being produced versus the number of staff.
‘Snapshot’ of the businesses financials.
Perception versus reality We put so much effort into collision centre assessments because we need to know we’re targeting the right area that will help the business achieve its goals. And having a view from a specialist who’s external to the business really pays off. Often, owners have a perception of what their issue is but our assessment will actually find the real root cause. For example, recently an owner believed their paint shop wasn’t functioning correctly and wasn’t producing enough work. Certainly the shop’s problems became obvious in the paint shop but they were all caused by upstream events. The painters
had to deal with delays caused by issues, such as vehicles not being delivered completely stripped and repairs not being to the right standard for the paint shop.
Time on the workshop floor physically watching.
Talking to the shopfloor staff, as well as the managers.
Once we’ve assessed the shop, spoken to staff and managers and determined the issues that need to be addressed, we prepare an action plan. It details what we believe should be done to correct any issues and implement a streamlined workflow. Each action gets a timeline for completion and a person responsible for seeing it through. It’s important to recognise that the MVP Team isn’t there to criticize – we’re there to help. Collision centre assessments are only conducted when we’re invited to do them and there’s no obligation for the business to follow all or any of the actions. However, if the shop is committed, the PPG Team will do everything in its power to help achieve the results being aimed for.
Common concerns Although every shop is individual, certain overall issues crop up almost all the time. The two main ones are lack of communication and lack of organisation. In most cases, shop floor staff tell us they don’t know what’s coming next. That’s where we see time wasted as technicians have to go to the foreman to ask for instructions. Something as simple as a production meeting and a production schedule can make a dramatic difference to organisation and communication. The daily production meeting can take as little as five or ten minutes and a production schedule can be written on something as simple and cheap as a large whiteboard so that it’s easy to visualise. Ensuring a collision centre is well organised, with good communication goes a long way to having a well run business. Over the years, this long association has seen a number of groundbreaking developments. One of the best examples of the close cooperation is the creation of PPG CeramiClear, the revolutionary mar and scratch resistant clearcoat. ot on the heals of Daimler AG’s announcement, global automotive brands, Chrysler Group LLC, Ford Motor Company and General Motors, have issued approval for three additional clearcoats from PPG’s extensive range. It’s seen as a clear indication of the close partnerships PPG has established with vehicle manufacturers in all world markets. The approvals praise the PPG products for their quick drying while delivering outstanding gloss, appearance and durability. A key advantage for refinish users is
In the latest example of collaboration, Daimler AG recently issued approval for PPG matt clearcoats, D8115 Matt Clearcoat and D8117 Semi-Matt Clearcoat, to be used on all Daimler AG matt finished passenger cars worldwide. At the same time, it’s also seen PPG and Mercedes-Benz develop and validate a unique ‘Dual Clear Repair Process’ to provide a simple and efficient repair method for the refinish industry. The growing popularity of full OEM matt paint finishes over recent years has thrown up its share of challenges for the refinish sector. Often, these finishes have proven to be technically complex to repair with the perfect level of matt effect, especially when dealing with black and other very dark colours. In many instances, that’s meant minor damage has had to be repaired by painting full panels in basecoat and clearcoat or even by painting the entire side of the vehicle. The beauty of PPG’s Dual Clear Repair Process is that it provides a convenient and straightforward method for blending the basecoat. This not only significantly reduces the required repair area, it also brings it back to a more conventional process that painters are more familiar. PPG is first to recommend this process together with its market leading matt clearcoats for repairing a wide range of gloss levels on matt and semi-matt full body colours. Before approving the process, it was thoroughly tested by Daimler AG. That involved the PPG Team demonstrating the Dual Clear Repair Process to the German manufacturer on a matt black bodyshell. Perhaps surprisingly, the first layer is actually glossy clearcoat. It’s immediately followed by a second coat based on a

blend of D8115 and D8117. This gives refinish technicians the ability to match the original colour while providing an even matt level across the repair area. The two matt clearcoats (one semi-gloss and one fullymatt) were specially developed to provide full flexibility in that they can be mixed together in different proportions so that a perfect match to original matt finishes can be achieved. This method can be used on all colours and is a key step in the efficient repair of darker colours, such as Black MB Nachtschwarz. It’s an invaluable benefit to collision centres because this combination of PPG products and process makes application and blending significantly easier and more efficient, says Ron Thomas, PPG Product Platforms Manager EMEA. “Matt finishes have increased in popularity with an increasing number of OEM’s over the past few years and it became clear to us that a special process would be needed to replicate the factory finish accurately. The two new clearcoats were developed to provide the basis for the concept and then, in collaboration with MercedesBenz, the process was further developed to create a perfect result on darker colours and matt blacks. Renato Liano, Front End
Evaluation Manager at PPG, originally developed the ‘dual clear’ concept and followed up in close collaboration with Daimler AG to validate the overall process. This ultimately led to the approval from Mercedes-Benz who are extremely pleased with the technical results.” PPG’s network of Training Managers will be available to provide step-by-step details of the Dual Clear Repair Process, throughout the Australian and New Zealand markets. Experience of a lifetime
With sponsors including PPG’s Envirobase HP, the Toyota Racing Series is providing young drivers with a valuable stepping stone to a career in top level international motor sport.
I
n motor racing terms, New Zealand (along with Australia) suffers from being isolated. The traditional hubs of motor sport, in Europe and North America, are far away making it difficult for aspiring young drivers to gather the race-craft and experience they need to compete with their peers on the world stage. Ten years ago, that need combined with Toyota New Zealand’s enthusiasm for motor sport saw the creation of the Toyota Racing Series (TRS). It’s proven to be a long term success story, according to TRS category manager, Barrie Thomlinson, who has a long background in professional motor sport. “It’s pretty unique in the world of motor sport for the same category to run for so long. Over those ten years, TRS has done exceptionally well in preparing young Kiwi drivers before they head overseas. In 2014 we will have at least half a dozen drivers in very high echelons of motor racing in Europe and the US – from Formula 1 and sports cars to GT cars and single seaters. For example, Brendon Hartley, who won
our very first TRS race in January 2005 as a 16 year old, is now a member of the Mercedes Formula 1 team – driving the team’s simulator – and is about to embark on a professional career with a very high profile manufacturer.”
Although it’s undergone some changes to its scheduling over the years, TRS has stayed faithful to the categories core values. The entire grid uses the same modern singleseater chassis, constructed from carbon-fibre to FIA Formula 3 safety standards. Each car is powered by an ultra reliable 1800cc Toyota 2ZZ-GE four cylinder engine producing 215hp and driving through a six speed sequential gearbox. Tyres, brakes, engine control units and virtually everything else, including the E85 ethanol biofuel the cars run on, is standard across the category in order to keep a cap on costs and let the drivers display their talent on the most level playing field possible. “When we set up the formula we really wanted to focus on the driver and not so much on the engineering around the car. It’s really about the driver fine-tuning the car for their driving style and then driving it in the correct way.” Originally, the TRS was run over a six month period but economic conditions caused by the Global Financial Crisis called for a rethink. Despite the difficulties at the
PPG MOTORSPORT 29
time, it’s actually led to a positive outcome with more overseas drivers taking the opportunity come in and race the more compact series which in 2014 consists of five round (three races per round) over a five week period in January and February. For example, this year saw Pedro Piquet, the youngest son of three-time F1 World Champion, Nelson Piquet, join the series. “We always had an international focus but after the GFC we restructured the series into a true international format which is run when the rest of the world is not racing because much of the northern hemisphere is under snow and ice. More than ever, TRS is exposing Kiwi drivers – generally under the age of 20 years old – to high level competition and, if they win the championship, they know they can go off shore and do well. TRS is also very much about developing our engineers and team managers, as well. Over a 20 car field for the 2014 season we probably have over 80 technicians, engineers, mechanics, etc. A lot of young Kiwi engineers have
started in TRS and are now working in Formula 1 and other racing categories.” As with any high level motor sport, sponsorship is a key ingredient. PPG has been a series sponsor for the past few years and, for 2014, all the TRS cars not only carry signage for PPG’s Envirobase High Performance (HP), they are actually painted in this advanced waterborne basecoat system. “PPG has a long, long relationship with Toyota so sponsorship of TRS was a nice fit for both companies. Virtually all of the cars were painted at Wade Collision Repair, in Hamilton, which uses PPG’s Envirobase HP and Delfleet paint systems. We saw it as the way of the future so we were keen to go with a waterborne system and it became obvious that PPG was leading the way. The painters are very, very happy with the Envirobase HP process.” With a hugely successful ten years already under its belt, Barrie says Toyota has recommitted to the TRS program. The aim is to introduce some changes to keep the category relevant and successful for the foreseeable future.
“We’re introducing a brand new car in 2015 and that’s exciting – it will feature the latest safety standards, F1 inspired paddle shift gearbox and a host of other technologies. TRS is a great product for New Zealand and absolutely the leading light in terms of what has been achieved – the R plan is more of the same!”

purpose built to take industry environmental concerns into account. Now that effort and the outstanding success of the state-ofthe-art facility saw it awarded with Level 3 Green Stamp Accreditation, via the NSW Motor Traders Association (MTA), in late 2013. The MTA’s Environmental Manager, Sarah Walton, runs the Green Stamp Program in NSW. “In recent years, an increasing concern for the environment by business owners and consumers has seen a general shift in attitude and practices in the motor trade. this to the community at large. In fact, a growing number of businesses have implemented operating processes and are managing particular wastes to a standard never previously achieved in Australia. “Despite these achievements, the automotive industry can still be labelled as a significant polluter in the community – at the MTA, we want to change this belief. The majority of our members are dedicated to meeting environmental standards and are also willing to exceed current legislative requirements. Therefore, formal Green Stamp Accreditation is inevitably the next step in communicating a businesses’ commitment to environmental management. Businesses who achieve accreditation are awarded with the ‘Green Stamp’ and are then able to promote this to their clients and potential customers. “PPG recently contacted MTA NSW to obtain a voluntary and confidential environmental audit for its NSW Training Centre. As I conducted that process, PPG’s Adam Hogg (Regional Sales Manager) was able to showcase the well-presented and environmentally friendly workshop and was more than happy to take on any recommendations to further improve sustainability.” PPG’s NSW Training Centre is currently following the initiatives below to ensure a more sustainable working environment: • An Environmental Policy has been implemented which declares the business’ commitment to the environment. Displaying it in a reception area or similar highlights the initiative to customers and staff.
• An adequate number of emergency spill kits are available and easily accessible. PPG has ensured all staff are trained in spill management and spill instructions are easily accessible. The Training Centre has two spill kits installed in the workshop area – one in the paint room and one in the DG bund. • Resource efficiency was a high priority for PPG with the building featuring hi-tech, low energy T5 fluorescent and LED lighting technologies.
• All wastes (such as aluminum, scrap metals, cardboard and rags) are separated before being removed for recycling or reuse. • All oils, coolants and contaminants are collected by licensed contractors (this ensures they are disposed of properly). • The business has implemented an Environmental Management Plan. This is used to ensure ongoing environmental performance through a self-assessment checklist that regularly monitors environmental practices and incorporates future improvements.
PPG’s Environment, Health & Safety Policy is implemented and is reviewed regularly and is also a yearly, compulsory e-learning module. • Copies of all Safety Data Sheets are on-hand in the paint room, the DG bund and front office, as well as copies being available online. • Recycled thinner (gun wash) is used to clean spray guns and the workshop has a dedicated gun cleaning station. • All external openings of the workshop are bunded or the floor is sloped inwards. • The building has two water tanks and operates using recycled water for toilets and garden. Although not required for Green Stamp Accreditation, the NSW Training Centre features a range of advanced high efficiency, low energy solutions thanks to a technology partnership with spray equipment specialist, Lowbake Australia. This includes advanced gas-fired infrared paint curing (IR Gas Robot) and RADS (Rapid Air Dry System) which are perfect for achieving substantial time and cost savings in the refinish process. Importantly for today’s industry, all the effort to search out sustainable solutions has also had a financial reward, showing that it makes good business sense to be environmentally responsible. According to NSW State Manager, Ken Wiggens, receiving the Green Stamp is extremely important to the running of PPG’s business. “Green Stamp Accreditation gives us an opportunity to market our environmental achievements to the community, while also boosting staff morale. I strongly believe it will help raise the profile of our industry as more and more collision repairers are rewarded for their environmental initiatives.” PPG’s new NSW Refinish Headquarters and Training Centre is located at 10 Peter Brock Drive, Eastern Creek, R Sydney.

In the wrong circumstances that leaves a small margin between safe operation and a devastating incident. Australia’s network of professional heavy vehicle repairers fully understands the consequences – they deal with the aftermath of accidents every day. They also get frustrated and seriously concerned when ‘backyard’ repair jobs are allowed to return heavy vehicles to the road with little regard for safety. Unfortunately, a single repairer expressing their opinion is unlikely to be heard. However, speak as a group and it’s possible to have your voice heard at the very highest level. This was the catalyst for the landmark creation of the Australian Heavy Vehicle Repairers Association (AHVRA). Today, the AHVRA consists of 28 members across all states of Australia and its role is to actively lobby for change, according to AHVRA Executive Committee member and spokesperson, Steve O’Reilly, from Royan Truck & Trailer Repairs. “In the past it was just individual repairers attempting to take up issues on their own and you can imagine how far they got trying to get the message to government ministers. The great benefit of the AHVRA is that, through our close links to the various state motoring associations, we have access to enormous resources, as well as contacts to government, insurers and other industry organisations. As a representative of the best

heavy vehicle repairers in the country, we send a much more powerful message. “The AHVRA continually provides submissions and facts, lobbying government on issues which predominantly revolve around the safety of repaired or non-repaired vehicles on the road. The committee meets every couple of months and prior to those meetings we’ll seek input from all members. Every member has an equal opportunity to raise issues, as well as contribute to resolving them.” Perhaps surprisingly, getting agreement between members is actually quite easy, according to Steve. Although members remain competitive in the business environment, being part of the AHVRA has helped breakdown the potential barriers between members for the greater purpose of working together to solve issues. Indeed, since being involved from the very beginning, Steve can only recall one or two issues where there wasn’t unanimous agreement. One of the key long term aspirations of the AHVRA is also a perfect fit with the goals of PPG’s FleetPool Network. Both have a
set of criteria for membership which aims to raise the standard of heavy vehicle repairs. “To join the AHVRA, members must sign up to the ‘Repairers Code of Conduct’ and adhere to its guidelines. They also must have a properly equipped workshop and well trained staff – that’s something PPG’s FleetPool Network also requires. The majority of AHVRA members use PPG products and many are also part of the FleetPool Network but not all of the FleetPool members are in the AHVRA because it’s only for collision repairers – not truck refinishers, sign-writers, etc. I think
PPG could see the value of the AHVRA so it’s been a supporting sponsor from the beginning and that’s certainly helped. Whilst the two organisations – PPG FleetPool and the AHVRA – have different goals, there is common membership and a desire to work together in many areas. Indeed, from a logistics point of view it’s made sense to try and arrange annual meetings together. For example, the last annual conference was held at the new PPG NSW Training Centre at Eastern Creek in Sydney and it was a joint AHVRA and FleetPool conference. And, we’re running a joint stand with

PPG at the International Truck, Trailer and Equipment Show in April.” In an effort to better inform work providers about the dangers of authorising work to be carried out at non-compliant workshops, the AHVRA has provided a written submission to the Insurance Council of Australia, as well as a presentation to the Institute of Loss Assessors. It is also working closely with Auto Skills Australia (the body responsible for the development and maintenance of nationally accredited automotive training qualifications in Australia) to create national training guidelines for heavy vehicle repairers. Both of these efforts are at the core of the AHVRA’s belief that repairs should only be carried out at compliant shops. It’s the pursuit of repair cost savings, over potential safety issues, which sees some trucks repaired by ‘backyarders’, says Steve. “One of the latest issues we’re lobbying government about is ‘cash settlement claims’. After an accident, some vehicle owners will do a cash settlement deal with their insurer
where they get a pay out figure and get the vehicle repaired themselves. Unfortunately, the temptation is to only do some or none of the repairs and pocket the money. Then there’s the real risk of unsafe vehicles driving around on the roads. “Another significant safety factor is the issue of written-off heavy vehicles being sold through the auctions and returned to the road via backyard repairers. The AHVRA believes that all heavy vehicles that are declared a total loss should be classified as a statutory write-off and can only be sold for scrap or parts. We’re saying that any heavy vehicle that can’t be repaired properly by a licensed, professional workshop shouldn’t be allowed back on the road. It must be clear to government that written-off vehicles
he components of a heavy vehicle steering system are a primary area of concern following an accident. Because forces travel from the wheel, through the various components they can cause damage far away from the actual impact point. This can occur even in minor accidents and often there is no visible damage. However, that doesn’t mean damage isn’t there. It is crucial safety issues, such as these, that experienced, licensed heavy vehicle repairers know how to find, the AHVRA points out. For example, a steering box showed no visible damage. It’s a sealed unit so it’s impossible to check if the internal parts are still in serviceable condition unless it’s fully stripped. After disassembly, major cracks were subsequently found in the steering sector shaft. If this had been returned to the road and, subsequently, failed on the highway the results could have been devastating. Similar situations have occurred with other critical areas, such as steering axle kingpins and turntable parts (the point where the trailer attaches).
shouldn’t be allowed back on the road because it has created that law for cars. A total loss car can’t be reregistered yet a written-off truck can be even though it might be carrying a load of 40 tonnes at 100km/h and been repaired by a backyarder who doesn’t have the expertise and equipment to undertake the job. It’s an anomaly that needs to be fixed before a tragedy occurs.” For more information on the Australian Heavy Vehicle Repairers Association go to www.ahvra.com.au.
