PPCNews,ViewsandUpdatesfromMissionControl
TheRallyis,inmanyways,thekeyClubeventofthe year.Firstandforemost,it’sthechanceforclub memberstocometogether,newfriendshipsmade,old onesrenewed;circlenotebooksareallverywell,buta chatoverdinneroradrinkinthebar,afteradayout andaboutwiththecamera,isawholeorderdifferent.
Secondly,theTravellingExhibitiongetsitsfirst showing.Possibly,goingforward,thiscouldbethe onlyexhibitionoftheprintsection,asfewerclubs displaytheTEattheirvenue.Perhapsmoreonline viewswillresult–timewilltell.
Thirdly,oneeveningoftheweekendhasalways includedthepresentationofawards.Thechanceto recogniseandrewardsomeoftheoutstandingwork producedbymembers.Albeitthattheeveningisnow ratherdiminishedbythepracticalitiesandcostsof storingtrophies,havingthemengravedandprinting certificates,sothatnowawardwinnersnotattending theRallyreceivetheircertificatesasPDFsbyemail–anothersignofthetimes!
Allofwhichserves,onceagain,todrawyourattention tothefactthatourlong-servingRallyOrganiser,John Kay,issteppingdown.Manymembershaveenjoyed theweekendovertheyears,althoughnoteveryone,of course,iswillingorabletotraveltothevenues chosen,butwithoutareplacement(orperhapsa team?)totakeontheorganisationaquestionmark hangsoveritsfuture.
Movingontothisyear’sRally.Despitelivingnotthat farfromtheCotswoldsfortwentyoddyears,itwasan areawevisitedhardlyatall.So,thisyear’svenue,in theheartofBourton-on-the-Water,gaveusan opportunitytocatchuponwhatwehadbeenmissing! Asyouwillbeseeinginthesepages,wewerespoiled forchoiceinthephotographicopportunitiesthearea
hadtoofferandleftfeelingwe’dbarelyscratchedthe surface.
OnFridayeveningprofessionalphotographerandHF Holidayleaderforsomeoftheirphotographic holidays,GrahamLight,gaveatalktointroduceusto thearea.Wefinishedtheeveningwithashowingof theTEDPIs.
WemadefortheRomanVillaatChedworthonthe Saturday;muchchangedsincemylastvisitwitha schoolpartyinthelate80s.BacktoBourtonfortea andawalkaroundthevillage.Afterdinner,itwasthe turnofclubmemberMartinPattentopresenthistalk, “CritiqueYourOwnImages”,offeringussome interestinginsightsfromaveryaccomplished photographerandjudge.
SundaysawusheadouttoanotherNTproperty, SnowshillManor,formerhomeofeccentricarchitect, artist,poetandinsatiablecollector,CharlesWade. Thehousewasliterallystuffedtotherafters,every roomoverflowingwithobjectshedeemedimportant enoughtopreserveanddisplay.Wellworthavisit!
AquickstopofftosnaptheoldmillinLittleSlaughter andourweekendwasnearlyatanend.But,not beforeRichardBownhadpresentedsomeinteresting thoughtsonstreetphotographyafterdinner.
Mythankstoourspeakers,theunfailinglyhelpfulHF teamandtoJohnfororganisinganothersuccessful Rally.

EDITORIAL
WelcometoaspecialissueofPhotonewscelebrating the2022RallyatBourtonontheWater.
Bypre-Covidstandardsitwasasmallereventthan previouslybutneverthelesstheweekendwasthe usualmixofsocialactivity,excellentfood, photography(ofcourse)andguestspeakersofwhich wehadthreethisyear.
NoissueofPhotonewsevermakesittopublication withoutthesupportofmanydifferentpeopleandthis issueisnoexception.Mygratefulthanks,andthe promisedGoldStar,toallofthosewhorespondedto thecallforimagesandofcoursetoJohnKilbyforhis reflectionsontheRallyasanewcomertotheClub. ThanksalsotoMartinPattenforthepresentation images-takenI’mtoldwithsomethingthatisn’tan Apple!
Butespecialthanksmustasalwaysgotothe outgoingRallyOrganiserJohnKayforhisusual efficiencyandattentiontodetailwhichensured anothersuccessfulevent.Johnhasbeenrunning thesefor26yearsnowsoitisverywelcomethathe hasofferedtomentorwhoevertakesontheroleover thenexttwelvemonths.Remember,itneedn’tbe onepersonbutifasmallgroupofyouwouldliketo cometogetherandworkasateamofferingsupport andencouragementtoeachotherthatwouldalsobe verywelcome!
IlastproducedaRallySpecialin2016andatthe timeitseemedtheRallywouldlastforever.Fast forwardjustsixyearsandwearefacingthe
possibilitythatthiswell-lovedinstitutionmaywell soonbeatanend.So,Iunashamedlyrepeatthe variouscallstoactionoverthepastmonthsandurge youalltoconsiderwhatrollyoucouldperformto ensurethecontinuationofthisvenerableoldclubdetailsbelow.

IhavebeenaskedbyDaveto commentontherallyfromthe pointofviewpointofa newcomer.
Firstlyallowmetointroduce myselfIamJohnKilbyIhave beeninterestedinphotography formoreyearsthanIcareto remember(onedayImayeven getitright).IamnewtothePPC havingjoinedearlierthisyear,I belongtoIC12andLP1.Sofar havingonlysubmittedacouple ofimages.
Myjoiningtherallywasrather lastminute,atelephonecall fromJohnontheFridaymorning, followingalastminute cancellation.Arrivingasa newcomertoagroup,mostof whoobviouslykneweachother, wasalittledaunting,butIwas verysoonmadetofeelwelcome. Thevenueandstaffwere excellent.Ididn’tknowwhatto expectinthewayofprogramme. Ifoundthemixoffreeloose unstructureddaysandmore formaleveningtalksworkedvery well.Thetalkswerenottoolong leavingtimeforsocialisation.

7 PersonallyIspentalldaySaturdayin Bourton,andonSundayIvisitedthe SlaughtersandalsoSnowshillmanorbefore callingatBatsfordarboretumontheway home. Allinalltheorganisationwasagoodmix betweenthemoreformalandinformalparts. Whoevertakesoverthetaskoforganising anyfutureeventshasaverydifficultactto follow. John
