VIIs Tournament
Sunday 8 February 2026
Prior Park College
Ralph Allen Drive, Bath, BA2 5AH

When I think about Rugby Sevens, I tend to consider Rosslyn Park at the tail end of this term. Having spent 15 years or so taking teams to SW15, it reminds me of the end of the Lent Term, of Easter’s approach, and of spring having sprung. The pitches are beginning to harden up and the skill levels on display aren’t hindered by rain. Unfortunately, the past few weeks in the West Country have not felt at all spring like. Indeed, each day seems to have brought a fresh deluge.
I know that our ground staff have been working hard to make sure that our pitches are as good as they possibly can be. I know as well that all those students playing today will have been training in less than clement conditions. However, I know that won’t stop the amazing turns of speed that we will see today, nor the sleights of hand, and moments of sheer power. Sevens as a sport is, undoubtedly, one of the most exhilarating, high octane, means of entertainment. Whether it is at the international level, or a school tournament, the one-on-one match ups, the space, and the speed makes it a joy to behold.
I know that today will provide all those things and will give a contrast to the attritional nature of the Six Nations matches of the past few days. Sevens is a game of space – you just have to find it. I’m sure that today will see space found, skills executed, and speed galore. I can’t wait.
Best wishes,
Ben Horan Headmaster, Prior Park College

• 7-minute half (2-minute half time)
• No limit on squad size with rolling substitutions.
• Games will be played under World Rugby Laws, U19 variations. Standard set of variation for Sevens.
• Drop goal conversions to be taken behind the posts if try is scored between the posts.
• Win= 3 points, Draw= 1 point; Loss= 0 points.
• If level on points, teams will be separated by tries scored, then tries conceded, then head-to-head result. If all are equal, the outcome will be decided by a toss of a coin.
• In result of a serious injury where a player cannot be quickly removed from the pitch, the current score will be taken as the result.
• If a player is issued a red card, the player will be banned from the rest of the tournament.
• Yellow cards will be punished by a two-minute sin bin.
• Any disciplinary issues will be referred to the tournament director.
• Society referees will be provided. Teams may be asked to provide an individual to act as touch judge.
• All referees will be given score cards for each game by the pitch marshal, which will be retrieved by the pitch marshal after the game and returned to tournament HQ.
