IN THE HEADLINES: San Antonio Receives $16M in TxDOT Grant for Downtown Bike Lanes By Alex Marquez Technical Writer

The City of San Antonio was awarded $15.8M as part of TxDOT’s Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside grant program. This federal funding is to be allocated to efforts to build a cycle track downtown along Market Street and Commerce Street. Proposed improvements will include nearly one mile of two-way, separated bike lanes through San Antonio, from Flores Street to I-37. Accompanying upgrades will also require improvements to traffic signals, signage, and bike/

ped safety lighting. Funding will cover 100% of the estimated cost of preliminary engineering and construction, with construction slated to begin in fiscal year 2026. Although the Texas Transportation Commission approved funding for 83 Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside projects, all approximately valued at

$345M, this was the sole grant awarded to the City of San Antonio. This news comes in light of recent public response to bike lanes located elsewhere downtown, with reports that bike lanes are often ignored by bicyclists and pose a traffic hinderance and safety risk to pedestrians and motorists.
