a parent’s perspective Perched in the Power To Be canoe, paddling as a group, there are times when Malachi and Reuben can just be brothers. With staff and volunteers looking out for them, they are supported to take in the sensations around them without getting overwhelmed. The day is about celebrating ability through shared experiences they wouldn’t otherwise have. That’s important for kids who aren’t always inclined or confident to interact with those around them. Power To Be’s inclusive approach has helped them build friendships along with skills, says mom Shelly. “When Reuben comes off program, he is a chatterbox. He says, ‘I did this and this, and my friends did that and we did this,’” Shelly says. “(For Malachi), Power To Be is a group of people that he belongs to. He considers himself the rock climbing kid, the surfer guy.”
“
“You are giving this child the chance to build confidence in who he is as a human being.”
Both brothers have varying degrees of autism, and while there are only two years separating them, developmentally that gap can feel closer to 10. That’s what makes experiences with Power To Be so powerful, allowing them to relax and challenge themselves together while surfing, canoeing, kayaking or climbing. Over the last eight years, Power To Be has helped Shelly’s boys become more comfortable in nature. It doesn’t matter if it is raining or sunny, if they are at the beach or in the woods, the boys are open to adventure. That confidence has changed the way they interact as a family outdoors. Whereas Shelly was once hyper vigilant – Reuben doesn’t always have a strong sense of fear – she can now relax, as the boys play and entertain themselves and each other with games. Abstract concepts can be hard for some with autism, so to watch them transform sticks into boats and incorporate games they learned with Power To Be is a notable growth point for Shelly. The positive impact from Power To Be goes beyond a day, and even a childhood. When the boys get frustrated, Shelly often uses a Power To Be memory to help them remember they’re capable of great things. Those experiences help form their identity and sense of self-worth. “You are giving this child the chance to test himself, and build confidence and the self-esteem in who he is as a human being,” she says. “When you give your money it is not faceless. Your support helps my kid. My kid who would never have a chance to do any of this.” 7

message from the executive director and chair of the board Together, we reached a major milestone in 2014. Through the collaborative efforts of our staff, volunteers, donors, and community agencies we inspired 1,013 participants to discover their limitless abilities through our nature-based programs. We were able to achieve this success by working with more than 50 community partners that helped us efficiently extend opportunities to as many youth and families as possible. This approach continues to provide Power To Be with the flexibility to keep programming expedient and responsive, a quality all of our stakeholders appreciate. Supported by several years of exciting growth and change, we continued to strengthen our financial and operational systems in tandem with our focus on two program areas: Adaptive Recreation and Wilderness School. We have improved public awareness of our mission, made further additions to our staff team and enhanced our collaborative partnerships, allowing us to increase our year-round offerings for participants in Victoria and Vancouver. Our new office location in North Vancouver is reflective of our commitment to expanding programs in the Lower Mainland. Our most valued asset remains our team of dedicated staff, inspiring volunteers, and committed board directors and committee members. As of 2014, our staff team consisted of 22 full-time equivalent employees whose diverse and talented backgrounds make our programs possible. Volunteers offered an indispensible value to Power To Be, donating 5,836 hours of their time, equivalent to three full-time staff members. We are grateful for their support. We were truly honoured by the growing philanthropic contributions toward Power To Be’s mission. In 2014, we exceeded our projected revenue by raising $1.9 million. Our organization also received $420,000 of in-kind equipment, products and services. These funds give us the necessary means to subsidize our programs and reduce the financial barriers many of our participants face.
We continued to evaluate the effectiveness of our programs, articulated by key performance indicators that are reviewed annually. We believe that measuring our impact helps us perform better and evolve faster, which leads to new ideas about effectiveness and efficiency. We are proud that our external annual program evaluation indicates 96 per cent of our participants say Power To Be helped make a positive change in their lives. We have reached a critical stage of growth at Power To Be. It is with this in mind that we look to the long-term success of the organization, taking the necessary steps to plan for leadership succession, operational infrastructure needs and sustained financial stability. We will continue to adapt to community needs through collaborative partnerships and sharing of innovative ideas. As we grow our programs, we know we must continue to invest in our values of respect, integrity and innovation and be smart with how we handle our resources. From all of us at Power To Be, thank you for an inspiring year. It is because of our joint investment in the well-being of people that so many youth and families were able to create memorable moments in nature in 2014. We look forward to your continued support and generosity. With deep gratitude,
Tim Cormode Executive Director
Kristina Campbell Chair of the Board

why we do it isolation & inclusion Many people facing challenges have little access to programs that support their development, which can often leave them socially isolated. Research reveals that children who are included in their early years enjoy more inclusive outcomes as adults. When children and youth with disabilities grow and learn alongside their peers, they are more likely to continue in education, get a job, and be valued by their communities. Power To Be provides a consistent and supportive environment for participants to feel that crucial sense of belonging.
physical health The Active Healthy Kids Canada 2014 Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth states that only seven per cent of youth aged five to 11 and only four per cent of youth aged 12 to 17 are getting at least 60 minutes of daily physical activity. Tied into this, nature-deficit disorder, as defined by Richard Louv, Children and Nature Network co-founder, contributes to a diminished use of the senses, attention difficulties, obesity, and higher rates of emotional and physical illnesses. Power To Be creates the space for play and skill development outside, year-round.
access to nature For someone living with a disability or significant economic barrier, access to the outdoors and recreation is often not realistic. B.C. has an overall poverty rate of 16 per cent (Statistics Canada) and, according to the B.C. 2014 Child Poverty Report Card, our province has the second highest level of child poverty in Canada. Power To Be’s supportive and subsidized approach creates opportunities to access nature that might not otherwise exist.

what we do Power To Be started in 1998 with a powerful idea about providing access to nature for youth and families living with a barrier or disability. Since then we have served more than 8,000 participants. We achieved this success through our cost-saving collaborative approach of working with more than 50 community partners in 2014, 98 per cent of which would recommend working with us to another organization. Power To Be’s collaborative, life-affirming curriculum helps fill the gaps in health and education services resulting from constrained family and government resources. Our programs have a lasting impact on our participants and the people in their lives, helping to build confidence in individuals and connection between people through a shared appreciation of nature. The diverse needs of our participants are the driving force behind our ability-centered approach to adapting programs to people. Through a connection with each other and their community, our participants foster life skills and confidence through our program outcomes that translate to all aspects of their lives.

Victoria & Vancouver These inclusive, nature-based recreation activities are for people living with a barrier or disability. Whether it means adapting a paddling program for someone who lives with a seizure condition or providing consistent social and supportive space for youth living on the autism spectrum to experience nature together, we create programs to fit participant needs. We combine an ability-centred perspective with the revitalizing benefits of nature to strengthen people’s connection with themselves and their communities.

Victoria Referred by counsellors and teachers, this three-year experience is for youth who could use extra social support in their lives and have expressed interest in wilderness experiences. Whether it means summiting some of the highest mountain peaks on Vancouver Island or taking to the surf in Tofino, we create teachable moments in nature to help youth grow into themselves while learning from each other. We combine an appreciation of nature with opportunities to escape the everyday so that youth can build confidence and develop skills.

We grew our operating reserve to 12 per cent of the 2015 operating budget. This contingency provides a safety net to protect our mission against unfavourable circumstances. Demand for services has never been higher and more conventional contributions, particularly from the public sector, are constrained to a greater degree. Through our collective efforts, our community can be confident Power To Be is here to inspire limitless abilities for years to come. Note: A copy of our 2014 audited financial statements from KPMG can be viewed on our website or by request.

•
Continue to evaluate our services against key performance measures with a balanced scorecard that speaks to our impact.
•
Nuture volunteer engagement and retention.
•
Continue to pursue collaborative relationships with other non-profits and community partners to complement services.

our team Our award-winning programs are made possible with the generous contributions of many wonderful people’s time and talent. We strive to put the right people in the right positions where they will have the greatest impact. We tirelessly seek methods to reinvest in our organizational culture. This includes training and professional development opportunities that bring out the best in our team, which in 2014, consisted of 22 full-time equivalent staff. Driven by a shared commitment to our mission, our passionate team brings a combination of knowledge in their respective fields, outdoor skills and certifications. Collectively we adapt our program offerings to the needs of our participants, raise necessary funds, build community awareness and strengthen systems that enhance accountability and the reputation of Power To Be. The work of staff couldn’t be done without the help of volunteers. In 2014, volunteers contributed 5,836 hours to the delivery of our mission through support on programs and at fundraising events. Their time is equivalent to three full-time staff members. Behind the scenes, our robust governance and business practices are backed by a commitment to stakeholder accountability that can be attributed to our Board of Directors and committee members. An Advisory Board stands in further support of the executive director to enhance fundraising efforts and our strategic reach.
