This issue is dedicated to all those racing for Jesus, those using faith to exceed in their talents and share their Jesus through the sport in which they excel. Artist Spotlight

It all started at three years of age when Adam Sanders began singing, which was followed by encouragement from his uncle to write songs and a father who taught him to play the guitar.

At age twelve, he had written that first song. Adam grew up in the north Florida town of Lake City, where he spent much of his youth with music; playing local fairs, talent shows and town festivals. Summertime was spent with his dad in Nashville, in and out of studios on Music Row with his uncle and professional session musician, Scotty Sanders.

Adam traded the Sunshine State for the Music City at age twenty-one, where in just a couple of years, he sealed a publishing deal with Big Yellow Dog Music. The move to Nashville brought a new friend into Sanders life, Cole Swindell, who shared an Adam Sanders song with his friend, Luke Bryan. The rest of the story goes down in country music history as that song, “Out Like That,” can be found on Bryan’s 2013 album, Crash My Party and so many hits have followed for songwriter, Adam Sanders.

In 2021, Sanders released his first full-length album, “ What If I’m Right,” that contained the popular singles, “Bible Verses,” and “Daddy, Jesus & Earnhardt.” The established and much sought after Nashville songwriter scored big with the album expressing his amazing artist talents and now in the mix of so many songs...Adam dropped his first Praise and Worship EP...’Tell Somebody Bout’ You.” That same named single is the top song for the September Power Source Magazine Christian Country Top 40 chart. Keep them coming Adam!!!

THE PLAYERS CHOIR

For fifteen years, the Players Choir has delivered one of the most highly-anticipated musical performances during the biggest weekend in sports, the annual Super Bowl Weekend. WHY DO BAD THINGS HAPPEN? It may be the most asked question that people have. Why do bad things happen to good people? Maybe this is a strange subject to approach in a magazine dedicated to the promotion of Christian Country Music but we are all faced with this question at one time or another. It doesn't matter if you're a musician, a teacher, a doctor, a blue collar worker or whatever; at one time or another you'll face this question.

If you're a Jesus follower you spend your life believing angels are assigned to you for your protection. You walk in faith and are always believing life is good and death will never touch you and yours prematurely. You believe when you're sick you'll be healed, when you're suffering financially, breakthrough will come and you'll prosper. These are good things to believe and even supported by scripture.

So why do bad things happen to good people? I don't have many answers but what I do know is this. We live in a world of good and evil. Good and evil are in constant conflict.

Every now and then evil breaks through and steals from us.

Scripture says, Satan comes to kill, steal and destroy. But in spite of that, Jesus comes to give us abundant life.

No matter what happens we must trust God. We must trust that he is good. We trust that he is not causing the tragedy that comes our way. God doesn't operate that way. He's good and only good! He's not killing our kids or bringing disease. He has no death or sickness to put on us. He has only good things to give us!

I've lived most of my life believing and speaking these things.

I expect good things to happen. I don't live in fear of bad things happening. However, in spite of my faith and confession, tragedy has come to my door.

Many times we hear folks say, "we must trust God's plan."

That's true but we must remember his plan is for our good!

He never uses evil to bring good. When bad things happen it's an opportunity for God to have our attention. He can speak to us through the Holy Spirit and lead us through the hard times and show us his mercy and grace.

When I was fourteen years of age my parents divorced.

I never believed that would ever happen. Then nine years into my marriage I went through divorce. Thank God my second marriage has been great, we celebrated 46 years this year!

Ten years ago this month our 34 year old daughter died.

As Christian Country musicians and artists we must write more songs about his goodness, more songs about trusting him, more songs about his grace. He's worthy of our praise in the hard times. As a matter of fact, our praise in those times will get us through to victory!

These things are hard to understand. We find ourselves asking, why Lord? We believe God is a good God but why do these terrible things happen?

Yes, bad things happen but when they do, we will get through the grief and pain when we believe and trust in God's goodness and grace.

These things not only happen to God's people but they happen to unbelievers as well. How many times do we hear of super wealthy people who have everything, but their lives are touched by tragedy?

A RACE OF FAITH

By KristeNicole Have you ever felt the stress of being up against the clock for something in your life? Many of us feel that way with our crammed pack schedules with no margin for down time or true rest. Often the races we put on ourselves and our schedules leave us feeling burnt out, over caffeinated, and even like our get up and go got up and went without us.

As followers we really are in a race – a race of faith. Like every other race out there our race of faith depends on both endurance and stamina. Like many other races the race of faith isn’t a sprint but is a full marathon with a prize to look forward to at the end.

In John 15 Jesus teaches us how to have endurance and stamina by staying connected to vine - the Heavenly Father and to keep going no matter what.

Are you in a season of running races that you have told yourself are important? Are you feeling burnt out? Are you struggling in your spiritual race right now?

If this is you then I want to share three truths for you to remind yourself of that will help you finish your race well. #1. Train 1 Corinthians 9:25a says, “Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things.

We have to be disciplined in our training and preparation for the long haul. We have to prepare ourselves mentally, physically, and spiritually for whatever may be on the horizon and for whatever may come out of nowhere and blindside us.

#2. Support Matthew 12:25 says, “And knowing their thoughts, Jesus said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid to waste; and no city or house divided against itself will stand.

We have to be teachable and be willing to accept the things God often speaks through others into our lives and we have to be willing to exchange the favor when another one of our fellow racers is needing encouragement in their race of faith. Not only is this beneficial to them but it also gives us strength to carry on in our race of faith. #3. Keep Your Eye On The Prize Hebrews 12:2 says “Look only at Jesus, the originator and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. We have to keep our perspective in check. It may feel and look like a hard mile right now but looking to the cross is a great way for us to focus on what is really important in our race at the moment.

Jesus was severely hated, accused, mistreated, and beaten yet He still finished His race of faith well and the good news is we can too.

2 Timothy 4:7-8 says I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race I have kept the faith.

It’s only by running our life race of faith through Jesus that we can inherit our Heavenly prize of spend eternity with Heavenly Father from which all blessings, joy, love, relationships, and good things flow.

Craig Groschel said, “God doesn’t ask us to win every race. He asks us only to take the next step, and the next, until we cross the finish line.”

Hold fast and aim to finish your race of faith and complete the tasks that you have been given by the Heavenly Father because it’s there that you will find life more abundantly and not live your life redundantly.

You’ve heard it said, “The Game Of Life,” yet some of us would not find comparing life to a game correct, it’s not a game. However, the analogies of a contest or game in the daily happenings is easy to accept. In truth, there are references in the New Testament that assist that sport/life comparison: the fighter, the runner, the wrestler, etc.

American Football is a staple of American Life just like Church, some are dedicated attendees, some know a little about it, but everyone knows it is there to embrace whenever chosen. Therefore, not too far-fetched to pull some faith truths and lessons from football.

THE RULES MATTER - Football and Faith both have rules, at times you might find yourself breaking those rules, if you get caught the flag is thrown and the absence of that flag might make you think you got away with the infringement.

Common throughout all sports is the “if the ref didn’t see it, not a foul,” and that would work for us in faith if not for the all knowing all seeing God thing.

Coaches guide their players through a playbook applying the rules to reach the goal of not having flags thrown that delay the game, cause setbacks, can result in injury or removal from the game.

The Bible is our playbook for faith, the rules are set for the same purpose. You are responsible to know and observe the guidelines and the rules. Faith has, “refs,” just like in football, they are found in our parents, pastors, teachers, friends, children and colleagues. The goal is to help you become the person that God wants you to be.

Never forget that those “refs” just as in football aren’t perfect. Therefore, step out in faith, embrace the rules and the refs with the Bible serving as your ultimate playbook.

PLAYING IN PAIN - If you are talking about Football or Faith, the word “pain” seems to drift into the conversation at times.

Today, we hear the topic of sport injuries and the risks associated in every sport.

Sometimes players are required to sit out during the game, there is even an injury list that scrolls across the bottom of the weekend television sports programming.

Unfortunately, some of those injuries are career ending and even worse life changing.

Likewise in our Faith life, there can be injuries or hurts. And just as in Football, the determined player learns to play through the pain, adjust and adapt to bring healing.

The love for the sport or passion pushes one beyond the hurt and the impact of that push is miraculous to all who witness.

Using the hurt, injury or pain to build a testimony of endurance creates a platform to show the never ending Power of A Loving God. That testimony gives a path to unmatched results in our personal Faith and to all that are watching or listening.

THE GAME PLAN - In Football, the coaches study the game and the opposing teams to an almost obsessive degree. The game plan is very important, the strategy that comes from that plan is the key to success. The knowledge that the opposing team is also doing the same is the motivation to prepare the team with game plan priority.

In Faith, the game plan has been written and the strategy can be found in the “words written in red.”

The enemy just as that opposing football team also has a plan/strategy which makes knowing our game plan aka The BIBLE of utmost importance. The great Coaches of football were once players on a team, likewise in our Faith, the leaders are teammates with us. They or we serve as parents, pastors, ministers, artists or members of the FAITH TEAM. The wise team player will always allow themselves to be coached, to trust in the experience, support and guidance of others with a Biblical perspective. Spend time in the Bible, know the Game Plan, it will ignite your Faith.

THE TROPHY - In Football, there is a reward for the winner of a game followed by a trophy for those winning the most games or best of the best. Those wins are perishable, actually going away season to season. During the seasons, many of the players go unseen in their contribution to the trophy victory. They have been fighting in the games, protecting their quarterbacks to allow for that amazing pass or making a way for a running back to break through to score. They are the players that go unnoticed until that “flag” moment and the team is penalized for a foul. If not for that mistake, they are just one of the team players mostly forgotten despite their contribution. In Faith, the reward is not perishable, it is a never fading away crown.

The unsung heroes are not forgotten, they are written in the Book of Life.

Yes, the mistakes are noticed by the witnesses and at times highlighted. That is the opportunity to turn the enemies' strategy to distract them into a moment for the Kingdom. Be not distracted, do your best, keep the rules, motivate the team, fight and never give up. The Trophy is at hand, that great day when we meet the Head Coach of Our Faith and hear the words, “Well Done!”

That is a win on the Ultimate Scoreboard!

THE SPORT OF FAITH Sports and Faith. What’s the connection?

Is there a real connection between the sport played and the faith lived? Can we relate sports to faith?

Sports are played in front of a crowd, never hidden away to talk about later. From the stands or on the television, sports are played out where people can view the event.

Faith is much the same, to not be hidden away. We have to live our lives in the world, while not being of the world. We’re out there every day, when people know we’re Christian we are scrutinized just like the athlete who fans pull apart no matter what they do. Athletes have to train to be successful. It takes a lot of work to attain athletic success and to stay at that championship level. Practice, day in and day out. Watching videos. Researching opponents. Planning.

As Christians, especially in ministry, we have to train also. Reading and studying God’s word. Praying for guidance and help. Going out and serving. That success requires daily training and commitment.

We have no “off season.”

In sports there are “off seasons,” however, training must continue and athletes can get into a slump.

The slump requires immediate attention - to practice more, work harder, talk to coaches, etc. Just the same, Christians can get into “slumps,” it happens and Paul talked about in Romans 7. And likewise we must give it attention to figure it out, pray, seek help if needed and allow God to work through us to work out of it. That God through us to get out of it will work with all people!

So the next time you are watching your favorite sport, think about this “game of life,” of which you are a star player as your Heavenly Father adores you greater than any crowd could ever cheer. He knows you by name and stands with you daily to help you achieve all that your heart desires.

The correlation between Sport and Faith can be broken down to fill endless pages, the connection between the two is music. Music is a powerful tool used by many athletes to help get them into the perfect mindset for training and competing. Music is a powerful tool in our faith used collectively in worship, celebration and to keep our hearts and minds in a perfected place.

Music is the bridge that connects Sport to Faith and vice-versa. It is the thing both appreciate, engage with, and reap benefit from. That is an element that ministries and artists must acknowledge, tapping into that platform brings multitudes to the awareness that enjoyable music with a positive message is here to be heard!

SONGWRITING IS A SPORT?

Could it be said that Songwriting is a sport? Well, it’s definitely not going to help you lose weight and get toned, as practicing your soccer skills would. But there are many similarities in the approach for successful writers. Let’s explore some.

HOBBY VS JOB

If you treat songwriting like a hobby, the chances of you ever becoming PRO are almost non-existent. The songwriting room is similar to the weight room as you are exercising your mind. I’m a firm believer you get out of it what you put into it, for the most part. If you practice once a week at anything you will be “decent” at whatever that thing is for you. If you do something every day, for several hours, you will be quicker and more than likely much more proficient. I definitely recommend having set times you clock in every day as if you are getting paid, even if you are not. Keep in mind what you are creating today could be future income for tomorrow. If you create nothing right now, that’s what you are guaranteed to receive from your efforts.

INSPIRATION

I’ve heard many writers say they have to wait for inspiration before they can get the pen out. Do you think Larry Bird ever waited to get fired up until the Lakers were up by 20. If you wait for inspiration to step into the writers room someone else is seizing your opportunity that day and you are too late. To prevent wasting time searching for a title, come to the writing session with several hooks you have previously written down. If your co-writer did the same thing, you have several options for inspiration right off the bat.

GAME FILM

In sports, the athlete watches game film to analyze their mistakes and perhaps see what their opponents are doing better. For songwriters this could be youtube videos of listening to successful writers tell their backstories of who they studied, how they learned, what they initially did wrong, etc. This could also be sending your songs to be critiqued by professionals that offer that service and not being too stubborn to seriously soak up their suggestions. Note: Your mom’s opinion doesn’t count. She loves you too much.

OFFENSE AND DEFENSE There are two major components to sports. Offense and defense. In songwriting it’s lyric and melody. It’s debatable if one or the other is more important in either scenario, but it’s hard to argue that if both are strong the chances of success are much higher. If you are great at lyrics but not melody, invite a melody person in for the co write to strengthen your team. If you are a great melody writer but your lyrics simply rhyme, but seem to be predictable, find someone with a creative way of telling a story and make some magic.

Don’t settle for a good song when it can be great, simply for a higher percentage of ownership of the song. Nobody rushes to your merchandise booth to buy a song that rhymed but made them feel nothing.

SEMI PRO VS PRO I often thought of SEMI PRO writers as writers who get indie cuts and PRO being writers who have had major cuts / Movie placements, etc. I would then imagine a song on the Billboard charts meant you were in the playoffs and a #1 on the Billboard charts meant you won the SuperBowl!

This is obviously very debatable, as everyone’s definition of success is different and rightfully so.

The reality is WAY less than 1% of writers ever make a living writing songs, just as WAY less than 1% of highschool football players are in the NFL. That is terrible news. Now here’s the good news: The most wonderful difference between songwriters and athletes is that there is no shelf life for a songwriter. You don’t have to retire. Ever! Bill Anderson is still writing hits in his 80’s:) You do not need 6 pack abs, bulging biceps or blazing speed. You don’t even have to be very good if you are lucky enough to get in a room with someone who is. What this means is you only fail for good when you decide to stop trying. So……..uh…………don’t:) Best of luck my friends!

Ministry Moments

The last week of September I found myself in a familiar place, surrounded by old friends and making some new ones. It had always been a fun time back in the day, however, until last year I had not attended since the event moved to Pigeon Forge. Yep, you guessed it - I am talking about the National Quartet Convention. A week of Southern Gospel Music, Ministries and Industry Makers…except it was much to my surprise different this time.

Let me start with last year, arriving on the scene as Power Source Magazine. It appeared that many more people knew who we were than we knew of them. We did the media thing, visited with people, and shared about our new adventure. Honestly, it was uncomfortable at times feeling ignored or bluntly rejected for being those “Christian Country Girls.” However, we did our job, wrote a paragraph or two in the Christian News section of the October 2022 issue.

At the beginning of this year, we collectively made a decision to utilize the platform of Power Source Magazine, of which we have been abundantly blessed to share, as a source to unify the Christian Music industry. Let’s face it, everybody is trying a hand at the country music sound, might as well embrace them right?!?

So, we got involved, secured a booth and received an unexpected invitation to be a part of the Showcase panel.

This panel views the 12-15 groups or artists and picks one to perform on the main stage that evening. Okay, I must take a moment to share that WOW WOW WOW we experienced some great moments, amazing talents, and literally had Church every single morning. It is a very tough job for the members of the panel, and some artists get very upset when not sent up to that main stage. We are not moved by those things, we do what we are asked with excellence as priority, sounds like a boast, it is just what we strive to do and pray to achieve.

Guess what…almost every performance had a country sound!! Told ya, they are all coming to the best genre in the world, at least that is what we think anyway. Additionally, lots of contemporary music choices. Yet again let me say, the talent was amazing!

Now let me get to the point of sharing this all with you…They all embraced us, talked with us about so many of our Christian Country Artists with celebration of the music and the ministries. They talked about unity across everyone, a togetherness that so many of them seek. It was refreshing to say the least as that is what is needed to truly further the Kingdom! Working together to share the Gospel of Jesus through music.

Imagine this...a stage anywhere in any town with a packed crowd. On that stage back to back performances of the best of the best in music that celebrates and shares the incredible God we all serve. The show is packed full of varied music, covering all the sounds just like a playlists of today. Have you figured that out? The playlist that is being created these days, they are varied types of music. Imagine a time when you can listen to a little bit of everything all together covering your needs albeit worship, celebration, or prayerful time. NOW IMAGINE that the world can turn on the radio or playlist to find that variety to enjoy the sound while the Holy Spirit takes over the hurting hearts, the searching souls and the prodigal lives. WOW! WOW! WOW! If we join together, work together, support each other, share with our friends in the business, just imagine the impact. Our passion is the country sound with a positive message, it is one sound that everyone likes in some way or another. We hold the guitars, banjo’s, steel guitars, pianos and voices to change the entire music industry. First, we gotta get together!

Today, I challenge you to open your hearts and minds to that concept and ask you to share those moments with us. Let’s do this! Let’s further the Kingdom of God TOGETHER! 29

Most of you will know the name...TIM TEBOW! Some will debate the greatness of his football career on the field. However, no debate can be uttered about his love for Jesus and the boldness of his faith statement. He is open about his willingness to be used by God in all platforms.

He launched into the spotlight as quarterback for the University of Florida with the eye black like many other players both collegiate and professional. However, the scripture was Phillippians 4:13. His goal was to tell the world that with God everything is possible! That changed in 2009...the championship where he wore JOHN 3:16 for 92 million to see!

Coaching Legends Eric Foster

My participation in organized baseball and basketball leagues began in the 1st grade, continuing both sports through high school and then four more years with college basketball. Throughout my playing years, I began to see how much athletic competition helped build character. With the assistance of several Christian coaches, my faith grew as a player.

After college, I contemplated a coaching career as I loved sports, also knowing the value in leading others as a coach. For me, the choice was to go into counseling instead and away from organized sports for many years. Then came my daughters, my interest was energized again. It was a great joy to coach both girls’ basketballs teams for 10 years. I always saw sports as a microcosm of the real world, so for those 10 years of teams, we considered how God wanted us to handle ourselves on and off the court. How He wanted us to act toward our peers as well as adversaries, win or lose. My daughters, Kila and Ellia are both great examples of positive Christian women and I hope someday they reflect to see that part of their character has been built through their athletic competition.

I have been a therapist for the past thirty years with three degrees over the course of seven years, completed two practicums, an internship, accumulated hundreds of continuing education course hours and have worked with thousands of individuals, couples, and families. Most people would believe that all of this experience has enabled the success of our outpatient mental health center. Similarly, some have suggested that my experience in my field has aided me in guiding my daughters Ellia and Kila through their childhood. I’m sure there is some truth in this, but none of the listed experience has been the primary source of my knowledge in business or as a father. There is no doubt, my ability to lead others within my family and outside of my family, came from my family. I was fortunate to be raised in a Christian home by parents who lived by the example of Christ. My mother was more vocal in her teaching while my father spoke by his actions. Both modeled an example that has guided everything I do.

I have always hoped I could get close to giving my daughters what my parents gave me. I have made at least two good decisions that have helped me get close to this goal: accepting Christ into my life and marrying a strong Christian woman, Kali. As my girls have become their own persons, Ellia and Kila have already demonstrated strong Christian principles which make me very proud. They have been very successful in multiple endeavors, but more importantly they are both Christian women who are very good people.

I’m sure most of this comes from their Mom, but at least I can say I chose their Mom; remember it was one of my two most important life decisions.

SUPERMAN In Luke chapter 12:41-48, Jesus speaks a parable about preparation for the coming of the Lord. He speaks of being ready and steadfast and when no one is watching, He will return. The verse that has often puzzled me is in Luke 12:48…. “To whom much is given, much is required.” We have all been given something, but what exactly? Unfortunately that is not for me to answer for you or anyone else to answer for me. We must all seek out our calling and seek out what God wants us to do with our lives in general.

I am obviously speaking about things beyond the realm of simply being a follower of Christ. What is the “thing” or the “gifts” that we each possess to aid in the preparation of the return of our Lord? In Romans 2:11-16, it speaks of God being no respecter of persons. This particular passage is obviously speaking of judgment, that ALL must be saved, believers and followers and that each one will receive judgment without any variable due to who they are or their status etc..

But could it also mean that everyone has a place in this preparation? Could it be that God sees us all as equal and will give us the proper tools to wage this war against evil that we are in? Could it also be that we already know what we are supposed to do and often run from it? I personally know my place in the big picture and have definitely run away many times over. Every time I ran, chaos ensued and I was miserable. I would imagine as you read those last few lines, you can think of times when you have done the same. It could be as simple as ignoring God when he spoke to you to do something.

What in the world does this have to do with Superman????

Well, anyone who knows me closely (a limited few) knows that I am a huge fan of Superman. Pretty much the whole idea behind Superman has a spiritual undertone to the story. Superman was gifted with great power that he did not ask for. On his home planet of Krypton, the red sun was normal for his people. It did not affect them in any way. No one on that planet had super powers of any kind. As the sun began to go supernova, his parents launched their baby to earth where he was found by humans, the Kents. They adopted him as their own and named him Clark.

Clark’s power came from the sun (see the connection? The Son) and he grew in his power immensely. As he began to study himself (Timothy 2:15) he began to realize his place in the world (Matthew 22:14). He was given these gifts to be of service to mankind. To help and to protect and to love the people. Fully aware of his purpose, he began to do just that. Saving and helping all he could. He spread truth and justice, he spread hope and peace. He used his gifts to assist others who could not help themselves.

#THEGOSPELTRUTH So much of this fictional story line sounds familiar. It is exactly what we are ALL called to do as Christians.

To love and to show the world the peace of Christ and to help others. We too have those gifts from above and our power comes from the SON. Superman himself however faced a battle inside. He so longed to be “normal”. The world got to him and even his own personal desires got to him. He forgot his place. Although he did not ask for these gifts, they were given to him nonetheless and where much is given, much is required. It was now his place to serve a greater cause than his own emotions and desires. But he battled inside and eventually found a way to run. He relinquished his gifts to become Clark Kent, a man, a simple man that could help in no way to right any wrongs or serve any truth or justice. He found his way to run from who he was destined to be.

What happened next? CHAOS!!

Now you might say, “I am not Superman and this isn’t about me.” Is’n’t it? At any given moment, a simple word delivered with the power of the anointing and Holy Spirit can change a person's entire life. If we run from what we are to do for GOD, we could cause CHAOS in someone's life. Obedience is better than sacrifice. God wants and needs us to be his tools in the battle against evil. It's our place to rise up to that challenge and to NOT run from who we are in Christ.

The story doesn’t end there of course, Superman found his way back and picked up his powers again and set things right. We can all do that too. When CHAOS is all around us, maybe we should look at ourselves first. Are we where God wants us to be? Are we running from our mission? Are we hiding behind a cloak?

Where are we in the CHAOS? Could it be that we have caused it by not being who we are called to be?

God always has a plan and that plan always involves us. We do not always understand why God has us in certain situations and certain times but, we have to trust who we are in Christ and draw from that power.

We have to rise above the CHAOS and bring the truth of God and His justice. We can be the hero of the Word. Doers of the Word, not just those who hear it. Faith is an ACTION and the Word is a two-edged sword. We should be ready and swift and take what is ours from the enemy.

Be the person God wants and needs you to be . We are all called to a higher purpose, running from that will always cause CHAOS. See this race to the end and find VICTORY over evil!!

SERVICE FLAGS

You may have seen flags, banners, or stickers like this as you drive around your town or you may have seen them worn as lapel pins in person or on TV, but do you know their meaning? These are Service Flags or Service Banners and they indicate that someone in the family is serving on active duty during a military conflict. Their origin dates back to World War One when a US Army Captain named Robert Queisser wanted to honor his two sons who were fighting in the war. Each blue star stands for a family member at war, so his flag would have had two blue stars, one above the other. This flag caught on with the public and spread from Ohio across the country with a bill passed in Congress to make it an official flag with the design codified.

These flags were widely used in World War II but not as much during Korea and Vietnam. The modern era has seen a return to their use, starting with Desert Storm in the early 1990s. They are intended for the use of immediate family members.

There are specifications for the design of the flag and for display. They are normally displayed vertically and have the same ratio length/width as the US flag. It should never be larger than the American Flag if it is displayed with one.

Organizations are also allowed to display a Service Flag to honor members that are currently serving.

Most Service Flags during WW2 were handmade by mothers or wives, so online you can see variations that are not the standard flag. Some say “Over There”, “In Service” or may give the branch of service. There have also been some unofficial modifications to the flag to indicate distinguished service, wounded, captured/missing or killed in action. However, there are two additional Service Banners that are authorized.

Occasionally you will see a gold star on the flag in place of the blue star. This represents a military member who was killed on active duty during time of conflict.

The tradition started when the Women’s Committee of the Council of National Defenses suggested to President Wilson in 1918 that he approve that mothers who had a son killed in the war be able to wear a gold gilt star on their black mourning armband. This expanded to covering the blue service star with a gold star.

The last Sunday in September is known as Gold Star Mothers’ Day. When you hear of someone referred to as a “Gold Star'' mother or spouse or a “Gold Star” family, know that their loved one was killed on active duty serving our country.

In addition, a new flag that has just been recognized in 2010 by the US House is the Silver Star Service Banner. This blue banner with a red border and silver star in the center based on the design of the traditional service banner honors a soldier wounded in action.

May 1st is the day set aside to honor the Silver Star Families of America and is known as Silver Star Service Banner Day. All 50 states, the Chickasaw Nation, DC, Guam, Saipan, and the US Virgin Islands recognize this day.

Now you know the meaning behind these flags and what they represent to our military families. They are intended for times of active conflict so you should see less of the Blue Star Flags, but the Gold and Silver Flags will remain in tribute to those lost and those injured.

MYLON LEFEVRE

Christian rock musician and Grammy Award winner Mylon LeFevre died Friday, Sept. 8 following a long battle with cancer. He was 78.

LeFevre was best known for his musical work with his band Mylon and Broken Heart.

He recorded more than 20 albums. In 1987, LeFevre won a Grammy and a Dove Award for his album Crack The Sky. He was inducted into the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His last album Bow Down was released in 2003, and was produced by his son-in-law and former Newsboys lead singer Peter Furler.

LeFevre’s wife, Christy posted to Instagram following his passing...

"When we discussed heaven through the years, Mylon was most excited about receiving the soul winner's crown. With his contemporary Christian rock band, Mylon and Broken Heart, he had the privilege of leading over 250,000 youth to Jesus. He cherished all the years of music ministry and the countless lives touched through his songs but his greatest joy was teaching the Word of God, especially through our broadcast, On the Road to Freedom.”

Born on Oct. 6, 1944, in Gulfport, Mississippi, LeFevre's big break in the music industry came when Elvis Presley heard him sing a song he had written at the age of 17 of which Elvis later recorded for a Mylon album. LeFevre toured and recorded with many musical artists in the late 70s, including, Little Richard, George Harrison, Greg Allman, and Eric Clapton.
