Artist Spotlight

Aaron Lewis loves to fish, golf, ride his mini dirt bike and spent time with his family. He is by physical appearance and sound, the epitome of traditional country music, however, that is but the surface! Born in Rutland, Vermont, Aaron Lewis spent his young childhood in a Log Cabin with his folk band playing parents. The earliest musical influence gives note to the James Taylor sound. Summers with his World War II Veteran grandfather brought the country music influence of Merle Haggard and Hank Williams to his world. The teenage years found Lewis in Massachusetts with deep influence of the rock sound preferred by his friends. As the story goes for all great ones in the industry, he formed a band with friends which led to Aaron being the lead vocalist and co-founding member of the band STAIND. And they weren’t just buddies playing around, they are STAIND – selling over 15 million albums to date. Aaron has been nominated for 3 Grammys and is a critically acclaimed songwriter… AND THEN HE WENT COUNTRY! There was no band break up, they are good and it was while they toured with Kid Rock that the solo country career took flight. Finding himself riding on the Kid Rock bus, Lewis was brought back to his childhood country roots listening to nonstop Waylon, Willie and the Boys among the other greats playing on the bus stereo. He couldn’t let go as country music took hold of his heart. “FRAYED AT BOTH ENDS”, the fourth country album from Aaron Lewis brings us “EVERYBODY TALKS TO GOD.” An acoustic sound with lyrics of life, truth, and the hidden message of hope. It is a raw expression of the reality of faith in life, even for the non-believer. Rising to #1 on the January 2023 Power Source Christian Country Top 40 – WE SALUTE AARON LEWIS!

The Hunter Logan Story “There was one night that it all came to a head, a choice was needed, I would serve God or enjoy the current offerings of Satan, and for the next 16 years…I chose the latter” I started playing music at the young age of six years old. Growing up, I was fortunate enough to play multiple instruments and I was influenced by many different styles of music. I would often sit in with my Dad’s Country and Bluegrass band on the drums, guitar or sometimes saxophone which gave me my strong love for country music. My grandmother insisted on taking me with her to bingo, and there was always a dance that followed. This would introduce me to Cajun and Zydeco music. While most kids were playing outside, I was learning guitar licks from CCR, ZZ Top and Foreigner records with an added influence of Kool & the Gang, Gap Band and Parliament while playing bass in a band formed with some school friends. Then came Sunday morning, Sunday night and Wednesday night playing that good ole Gospel music in church. I believe that part of my story is all too familiar. Church was a part of my life, giving me a foundation of faith. I would step away from that foundation at 16 years old following the divorce of my parents. That life event was further impacted by the move from Jennings, LA, where I had spent my entire life with all my friends and into a town where no one was known to me. The legal age in Louisiana back then was eighteen. I could buy alcohol and get into certain places at the age of seventeen. So, I started drinking, playing bars...literally playing in the bar on Saturday night and then music in 8

church Sunday morning and Sunday night. It was certainly an interesting teenage lifestyle. The first real adult choice made was to join the Air Force instead of continuing to be a bum. I got married, shipped out to Germany. While there I played in several different bands. My next duty station would be Florida where I also played in a few different bands. I ended my Military service following Desert Storm, moved to New Orleans working as a dispatcher for an oilfield trucking company and playing music on the weekends. Ironically the time came that my music started to interfere with my day job and my day job was interfering with my music. It was time to make another choice. The steady paycheck and insurance of my day job did not compare to the cash money of my music job. So, I quit the day job and went into music full time. My uncle told me that if I could stay away from women, booze and drugs that I was good enough to make a living playing music.. I never had delusions of grandeur! If I could just support myself and my family that would be success enough for me. With four different house gigs, playing eight times a week locally, starting my own record label and publishing company with six bands, 2 solo artists I was off. We put a total of 20 albums out. It was time to venture out. I did a stint at The Nashville Palace in 2001. Next stop in the music timeline, a call from Carnival Cruise Lines, they had a spot for me on their newest and biggest ship...

The Carnival Conquest. So, I did a six-month stint of 7 nights a week as an entertainer traveling between ports in Biloxi, MS to Kingston, Jamaica and Cozumel Mexico. Just before my time on the ship was up, my wife went back into the church, and I could tell something had changed. My wife was basically the single parent of 3 boys while I was at sea for six months, additionally she was attending college for her bachelor’s in criminal justice. The choice was clear, I had to go home, be Mr. Mom and in my mind, I could do the gigs on the weekend. Of course, you know what happens next, I didn’t do that gig thing on the weekends, I got back into the church myself and rededicated my life to the Lord. With those gig days behind me, I visited a radio station that played my music and that of my artists. While I was there the owner approached me about doing a show. Now, I didn’t know anything about doing a radio show, but with nothing else to do and the prospect of getting paid...” Swamp Pop Saturdays with Hunter Logan” came to life on the radio every Saturday. That same owner approached me with another idea to make some more money in sales during the week. After about 6 months, due to working conditions, it just didn’t work out . I had turned in a resignation, being totally up front that resulted in having the letter crunched up and thrown at me followed by a “if you leave, you will fall flat on your A++. Sadly, that station owner held a grudge against me for years, refused to play any of my music. It didn’t matter the number of requests; it was a big fat NO! I made a promise to myself right then to never let personal feelings get in the way of playing someone’s music and I haven’t to this day. That experience would lead me to another radio station in the same town. Little did I know then that stopping by to see about employment would connect me to the guy who trained me for what is HLE RADIO today. He showed me all the ropes, graciously gave all his knowledge from having a number one morning show in Myrtle Beach, SC for 5 years. It is vital to advise at this moment to always apply what you learn from another to yourself, his knowledge was invaluable, however, his methods of training were horrible. It was a toxic training of verbal abuse, never being good enough or without error. Seriously, this guy could look at perfection still finding error. Throughout the difficult process, I would become fluid on the microphone, learn production, making commercials, maximizing song usage, how to create flow, create and sell sales packages, and how to annunciate - which is still a big deal to me. That all sounds like an incredible opportunity but I just burnt out, I didn’t want anything to do with radio period. In July of 2010 I covered a Grand Opening on Main Street in Jennings, LA for a computer repair place. Fun fact – this is still the exact location of where HLE Radio resides today. The building hosted a Real Estate office in the front with a Computer Repair place in the back. After covering the Grand Opening, I stayed a bit after everyone had left and realized that the Computer Repair owner was also a musician which got me thinking we could make a studio together (he had the other half of recording equipment that I didn’t). My burn out was radio, not recording.

9

We talked more which led to my renting a 7x14 office space, to avoid driving out of town on my current job, which led to more conversations about radio. He wanted to start a radio station, but the timing was not good. I shared the FCC had a 15-year freeze on all licenses, so he would have to find one for sale to acquire it. He replied, “what about an internet radio station?” With no personal interest in doing it, I agreed to show him everything I knew about radio. Being that Hunter Logan Enterprises (HLE) was already formed and under it I already had umbrella companies (HLE Publishing, HLE Records etc.) it only made sense to call it HLE Radio. With a media player, some southern gospel music, and a few commercials I brought from my old station, jingles, and absolutely no live segments, HLE Radio was formed. In fact, we had a makeshift website which could not even be found on Google and a library of only 40 songs. Keep in mind I was still producing a radio show called the Hallelujah Hayride for a local station on Sunday’s which featured Southern Gospel artists and local Christian artists as Christian Country music was unknown to me at this time. While producing the Hallelujah Hayride, a preacher friend gave me his personal cd collection to use for my show. A blank cd with just 3 songs and “John Steed” written on it caught my attention. After listening to it, I thought to myself, if we had more of this type of Christian country music, I know that people would love it! My introduction to Christian Country music, Mr. John Steed. Despite this finding, it would still be 2 years before I would know about Christian Country and at that point it had been around for over 20 years. We were entering the transition of 2010 to 2011, a significant time for HLE Radio. In reflection, it was at this time I shared with my wife that I felt the Lord leading me to full time ministry, working for myself for the Kingdom. No specifics, that was all I knew at that time. She saw my success in the music business when all said that I couldn’t do it. She understood me, always believed in me, and she remains a great blessing to me. Being from the deep south, we were spoon fed Southern Gospel and did not even know Christian Country Music existed. So, after two years of doing searches for John Steed I got an email (not from him, but he was referenced) and I followed the trail and finally got in touch with him. I had been playing his music, well the 3 songs I had for the last two years, so I was really excited to talk to John. He shared with me about more artists like himself and the lack of outlets for their music. So, I started to contact those artists such as Tommy Brandt, Mike Manuel just to mention a few and they started sending me their music and that is how we became a Christian Country radio station. People said that we wouldn’t be able to do internet radio as a terrestrial station. I didn’t know any better. Truth of the matter is I had never run a business much less a radio station...I had no clue. What I did have was a lump of faith and a desire to tell people about God. Most would think that HLE Radio was started intentionally with a great plan, but that is so far from the truth. HLE Radio was started because I failed to witness to someone. On a sales call for the other station, I could feel the Holy Spirit urging me to witness but I didn’t. As I drove off, I pulled onto the side of the road and began to cry. I told God that I wasn't ashamed of him, but I needed a comfortable way to tell people about Jesus. I told God that if he would give me a comfortable way to tell people about him, I would tell people about Jesus every day! And that is exactly what he did. I get to tell people the good news every morning! So, when I say HLE Radio is a ministry first radio station, it really is, and we mean it, the goal will always be souls. Faith is the beginning of any ministry; the development of that faith is a time often hard as was our case. The house was going into foreclosure, both vehicles were being repossessed, and there was no money for bread and milk one week. I had tried to get the mortgage company to lower the note for us to get caught up, but instead, they raised it to $181.00. I remember one time the repo people came to our home to pick up my car, but they didn’t know about the station on Main Street. That very same day, a lady backed into my wife’s car and didn’t want to file it on her insurance, so she gave us a check. It was enough to pay both car notes and keep them away for another month. I told God, well I have 7 more fenders if this is how you want to do it. Also, shortly after, both cars broke down, and we had no money to fix them. I can remember my mom driving to town to take us both to work. I pawned every piece of 10

music equipment I had to keep the lights on in this place, including my bass that I was playing in church with the worship team. This wouldn’t be the only time I would pawn music equipment to keep the lights on. There have been two other times.

There will be Seasons and individuals for Seasons! At this point, I’m starting to get restless and thinking, I know how to make money, but I didn’t want to go back there again, especially after God had delivered me from it. I am talking about playing music on the road again. God always provides! The proposed partnership with the Computer Repair owner did not work out, he ended up leaving and I ended up with the entire back office. Since the front of the building was used sparingly by the Real Estate office, I was allowed access to use it when it wasn’t in use. People were still walking in daily for computer repair, and there happened to be a gentleman in our church that was going to school for it. It seemed logical to ask him to come do the repairs and pay him most of the profits. This way we would make some money to help support the radio station. The recording studio really wasn’t happening. When it’s not God’s will, he will not pay the bill! Around this time, two gentlemen came on board to help the radio station in exchange for space to work. One was able to do graphic design and the other was good at building websites and doing code, something we had desperately needed. With a computer repair shop going, a Google worthy website being designed, we were on the way to something good. During their tenure here, the website designer obtained a copy of software that would let us go live on the website, but we needed a computer to test it out. Enter my wife’s broken computer that was destined to be trashed. She worked at a medical billing place across the street from the station and gave us a broken computer that our computer repairman fixed and with a borrowed server we were able to try out live radio. With the capability to go live, I asked the computer repairman if he would like to talk on the radio with me as he always did his repairs in the morning time till noon and he said, sure. So, we did, and I asked about doing it again and again. And just like that The Morning Show with Hunter and Boot was born. That show remained for a little over a year until he went on to do other things, just as the other two individuals that had made great contributions to HLE Radio during their time here. They were the individuals for that season, and seasons change. It was also at this time I had a falling out with my current pastor of ten years. Although many hurtful things were said, it was evident that God was moving us into a new season. We lost our church of 10 years, our friends, and most of the income we had.

I’m happy to say they were wrong. It was a store front building, a borrowed server, broken computer and three John Steed songs, a lump of Faith and the Promise to God. We went live the last week of March 2012, and we are still live and going strong today. Since that time, not only have we grown but God has assembled a selfless and wonderful team. Roilyn Self-Station Manager, Brian Carpenter-social media, Roger Barkley Jr-webmaster, David Ray-Christian Country Jukebox, Steve Roberson-Christian Country Countdown, Randy Finchum-Publicist, Dennis Higgins-Poster Graphics, Nate Knox-Prayer Team Leader, Patricia Teachey-Cameras, and many Volunteers. HLE Radio is a 501c3 and the HLE would be changed to HE LOVES EVERYONE Radio. Eight different upgrades have taken place, grown in space to take over a second building. We have achieved radio station of the year ten times as well as radio personality of the year ten times. Three other stations have been built off HLE Radio’s proprietary framework and we are currently heard in 191of the 195 recognized countries in the world today. We are always first page google no matter how you search for Christian Country which is no small feat considering we have never and still don’t pay like major corporations to be on the first page of Google. I give any success or anything that anyone would consider success to my Lord and Savior cause there is nothing that I can do without him leading the way. Obedience is the key to all blessings. God’s gifts are always without repentance. I started out playing music for Jesus and the for 16 years, I did not write or play any music of my own. In fact, the Lord had me at the radio station promoting and supporting artists. Most of the artists who came through the station

didn’t even have a clue about my past of being an entertainer or a musician. But in 2020 the Lord opened up my music once again and allowed me to write my first Christian song ever, “You Can’t Shack Up with the Devil, “written with two of my friends, Steve Roberson and Randy Finchum. I have just released my latest song Tic Toc God’s Clock. The record label and publishing company has reopened, and HLE Records has just sent out its first six releases by six different artists and are very excited about them. What I am most excited about is the opportunity to share Christ, however that may be, whether through a song, a break on the morning show, leading worship at a church, preaching a sermon... just so I can be used as a vessel. Fill me up and pour me out, that’s what I’m all about!

THE CROSSOVER The song we sing out loud in the car, include in a memorable event, learn all the lyrics to and celebrate the music and the artist to which it belongs! It starts just like all other music finding a way in our life through feelings. It is the way it makes us feel! It's the song that brings us to a moment of worship or praise without intention from the artist. It is THE CROSSOVER! "That's Why God Made the Radio" is a song written by Joe Thomas, Brian Wilson, Jim Peterik, and Larry Millas for the American band The Beach Boys. It was the first new single from the band in 20 years and was included on the band's 29th studio album of the same name. As the story goes Jim Peterik and Brian WIlson were at a restaurant talking about radio and how great the sound was coming out of the oval car speakers. Jim said, "Man, that was the best sound of all," and Brian said, "Yeah, that's why God made the radio." Tuning in the latest star From the dashboard of my car Cruisin' at seven Push button heaven Capturing memories from afar In my car That's why God made the radio So tune right in, everywhere you go He waved His hand, gave us rock 'n roll The soundtrack of falling in love That's why God made the radio Feel the music in the air Find a song to take us there It's paradise when I lift up my antenna Receiving your signal like a prayer Like a prayer That's why God made the radio So tune right in, everywhere you go He waved His hand, gave us rock 'n roll The soundtrack of falling in love That's why God made the radio Making this night a celebration Spreading the love and sunshine To a whole new generation Whole new generation

CHRISTIAN RADIO

When did Christians take to the airwaves on the radio?

By Rebecca Higgins

One can make the argument that the answer is the “first” time was on December 24th, 1906, when a CanadianAmerican inventor named Reginald A. Fessenden broadcast his voice and music over the airwaves. It was not supposed to be a public broadcast, but instead an invitation-only demonstration of his invention. However, because ships at sea that had not been invited to listen picked up the transmission it became the first “public” broadcast. He played on his violin “O Holy Night”, and he read Luke 2-14. "Glory to God in the highest and on earth, peace to men of good will" This broadcast would give several claims to fame as he would be the first to broadcast music as well as the first public speech. Because many of the things surrounding electricity and radio have obscure beginnings and parallel developments, there is controversy surrounding the claim of first. Researching this know that you will run into a great deal of quibbling over what is “public” and what is “first” and what “counts”. However, it is worth taking to the internet to read about Reginald Aubrey Fessenden as he worked with Edison and did pioneering work in developing radio technology, particularly AM radio. He is considered the “father of voice radio”. I believe that when a man of Mr. Fessenden’s reputation says he did something, he did it. Radio had a crazy time of development through the first two decades, but the next consensus landmark for Christians was on January 2nd, 1921. That is the first broadcast of a church service on the radio by KDKA of the Calvary Episcopal Church service from Pittsburgh, PA. The service was led by Reverend Lewis Whittemore. By 1925, there were 63 Church owned radio stations in the US. In 1943, an interesting development happened when what is now the National Council of Churches attempted to limit religious broadcasting to only “responsible”, “approved” broadcasters during public service time slots. It took six years to overturn this effective ban on the purchase of airtime for religious broadcasting. A group of 150 Evangelical Christian broadcasters and church leaders formed the National Religious Broadcasters in order to fight for the rights of Christians to broadcast on the national networks. American Broadcasting Company, ABC, which was the newest network, reversed their ban first. This opened the floodgates. New programs and shows were produced for national and regional programing. Today, in addition to what you may hear occasionally on secular radio stations, there are about 1,600 organizations broadcasting Christian content in the US. Most of the programing is Protestant. This number includes both single station operations and networks that are country-wide. Programing includes everything from music, preaching, call-in shows, news, talk shows, and even some radio dramas. If you include television, there are over 4,000 Christian broadcasters. The last numbers available estimate that approximately 141 million people per month use some form of Christian broadcast media. This number actually tops church attendance which stood at about 132 million. The last firm numbers I could find are from around 2010 and all indications are that, especially with the pandemic, church attendance has dropped with many turning to television, the internet, and radio. It seems that outreach by Christians through all forms of media, including radio in all its forms, over-the-air, streaming, and satellite, will be more and more important to bring the Word to people wherever they are.

GODLY WOMAN

FOCUSED WAVES OF FAITH By KristeNicole

I recently visited the legendary Grand Ole Opry with singer songwriter and producer, Cooter Daniel where I learned of his performance on The Grand Ole Gospel Time. I hadn’t heard of this show before but let’s take a stroll through some rich music history. It’s a Friday night in February of 1972. You have gathered with your family and friends around the radio. You hear the announcer say, “Welcome to Grand Ole Gospel Time, coming to you live from the stage of the historic Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee.” Suddenly you hear evangelic melodies that once filled the Ryman Auditorium, a place of worship 80 years prior. Rev. Jimmy Snow, son of the late Hank Snow, was a pastor at Nashville’s Evangel Temple. Rev. Snow chose the Opry House for this gospel showcase because of its rich tradition and technical facilities. Rev. Snow planned a well-paced show which included a brief sermon and an abundance of gospel music. There were performances by the Evangel Temple Choir as well as famous artists like Johnny Cash, Connie Smith, Barbara Fairchild, The Oak Ridge Boys, The Blackwood Brothers, Pat Boone, Dobie Gray, Kris Kristofferson, Larry Gatlin, Hank Snow and many more. This radio program followed the Friday Night’s Grand Ole Opry and was initially simulcasted on WSM Radio and was heard live in forty-one states. It was also featured on Christian Networks like TBN, CBN, and PTL. There were 1,194 programs and it is reported that roughly 1,860,000 people made decisions to follow Jesus, exceeding all expectations. The Grand Ole Opry and the Grand Ole Gospel Times moved to the Opry house in 1974 because it needed a permanent home. Ryman Auditorium was site of the Grand Ole Opry from 1943 to 1974. For this radio show, or any ministry, to be successful, there had to be a focus of intent – a focus on the Heavenly Father. As Christ followers, we must constantly keep our focus on the things the Heavenly Father has for us, not the things this world has to offer us.

Catching up with JAMIE O'NEAL

I’ve had the pleasure of writing with Jamie O’Neal several times over the years, and I’m always excited to hear the final product. She is a hit maker for a reason. Recently she was gracious enough to answer a few questions that aspiring writers and fans may want to hear. I’m very grateful for the wisdom she freely shares. - Corey Lee Barker Do you typically begin with the lyrical idea, title, or melody when you write? Usually a title or idea, then melody, then lyrics. What was the first song you ever wrote that made it to radio? LeAnn Rimes Surrender Song you didn’t write, but wish you did…. and why? Either I Hope You Dance or I Will Always Love You… because those songs will live forever and continue to move generations of people forever. Hit song that took you the longest to write? Somebody’s Hero because we wanted to get it exactly right through the course of a mother’s life. What current artist would you like to write a song for? I’d say Lainey Wilson because she is such a favorite of mine. Is there a singer/songwriter that inspires you at the moment? I’d have to say Hardy because he’s so passionate, unique and full of new ideas, I love him! Did you ever pass on a song that became a hit for someone else? No.

Corey Lee Barker

18

In your experience, what do publishing companies look for in a writer? I think companies obviously love it if you’re already getting cuts, also usually if you write songs alone so there’s no shared publishing. I also think they look for a little distinctive flair or sound they haven’t heard before. I think it’s so important to not focus on what other people are doing or what you’re hearing on the radio but to know that you’re putting something different out there. That said it’s important to know the fundamentals of how to write a song.

When choosing songs for your artists as a producer, how many songs do you typically go through and where do you find them? Usually artists come to me with some songs written and we will go through those plus try to write some new ones together for their project. What’s a great tip you could give songwriters who are just starting out? Read the book writing better lyrics by Pat Pattinson (who teaches at Berklee in Boston) Also listen to the top Nashville songwriters by going to their songwriter rounds. Attend some workshops on writing, Liz Rose has some, NSAI has some and others. Just soak-in what music city has to offer in the ways of teaching. And don’t give up your dreams, keep going!!

COREY LEE BARKER has had over a 1,000 songs cut by artists since his 1998 arrival in Nashville. His music has also been placed on many networks, featured on Grammy winning albums, and #1 Billboard albums collectively in Country, Bluegrass and Polka. Corey has received nominations or wins for Song of the Year and Songwriter of the Year multiple times by the ICMA, The Josie Music Awards, The Tennessee Songwriters Association International, Texas Country Music Association, The World Songwriter Awards, GMA, KCMA, and the NACMAI.

#THEGOSPELTRUTH

WATCH YOUR WORDS BY Shane Roark

Matthew 15:18 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. Matthew 15:11 It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; and this defiles a person. Luke 6:45 The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

Over 90 such scriptures can be found in the Bible with very little effort. We believe in the power of God, we believe in salvation, we believe the story of the gospel of Jesus and even how Genesis describes the creation of this planet and our universe. Then for some reason, we decide that "words" are harmless. I’ve heard many connect the teachings of the power of words with name it and claim it. However, this has nothing to do with the Holy Word of God's stand on how we speak. I am often surprised at how bitter and angry people can often be. They’ll rant and rave on and on and on then say, “I’ll pray about it”. What?! They have zero belief in their negative words, yet claim they can “pray” and God will jump in and fix it. That's not how it works. When we run our mouths about how things won’t work out or how terrible life is or how bad we have it, we are saying “God can’t do anything about it”. 2 Corinthians 4:13: “I BELIEVE; therefore, I have SPOKEN, Faith without works is dead." (James 2 14-26) The beginning of this work is how we use our WORDS”. It is work to guard our words. Thoughts are often nearly impossible to tame and will turn into words so easily if we let our guard down. It is a minute-by-minute task. We must be vigilant in the war against negative thinking. 2 Corinthians 10:5 says: “We take captive every thought to make them obedient to Christ.”

32

#THEGOSPELTRUTH This shows us that we MUST guard our thoughts before they become words. Words activate our faith and show what we truly “believe”. Words are also irreversible. That is why they’re so powerful. Negative talk exposes our hearts and spreads doubt to everyone around us. It also shows the enemy that he has us beaten down. While positive words are more difficult at times, It is certainly worth it. Joshua 1:8 says: “Keep this book of the law ALWAYS on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. THEN you will be prosperous and successful.” This shows us the key to success and how to prosper. Speaking the promises of God and having those promises on our mind day and night. Luke 6:38 says: “Give and it shall be given to you, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with what measure you use it will be measured back to you." This is also speaking of “sowing and reaping”. When we sow negativity, we will IN FACT reap negativity. If bitter, hateful, negative words are what we speak and give, that is the measure that it will be given back. Now I know some reading this will say “that’s kooky talk”, there’s no way that our words can affect our life direction or success or failure etc.… There’s a reason that God SPOKE the creation of all things into existence. He knew the power of WORDS. He activated the power of creation with words. Those words activated FAITH and made it happen. This is exactly how we are directed to live. So many scriptures in the Bible teach us about our words. Positive, faith-based words will result in VICTORY. Negative talk will defile our lives. How about this, a one week challenge, give it a try. Start today and guard your words. Speak only what is productive, speak only the promise and goodness of God, speak only of his hope and love and goodness. Try for an entire week to speak not one single thing that is negative. It will SHOCK you at how you will feel at the end of that week. God wants us to be happy and healthy and successful and prosperous. That can’t happen while we are spewing negativity out of our mouth all the time. Speak POSITIVE and see POSITIVE come to pass in your life!!

LEE LANCASTER Lee’s aspirations to be in broadcasting started early in life partly due to the success of his older brother (Jeff Davis – WLS Chicago). As a long-haired Rock and Roll DJ, Lee started his radio career in 1977. From the beginning, he felt there was something missing, “When God called me to Christian Radio in 1984, I knew He had a better plan for me that I could ever have for myself” shared Lancaster. He’s spent the last 40 plus years using his gift and drive for the Lord, expressing the hope and power of Jesus Christ. Lee has served radio stations as Program Director, Operations Director, and General Manager. Currently serving as President/General Manager of Legacy Broadcasting and hosting the morning show on Today’s Christian Country. Legacy Broadcasting Inc. started the “Today’s Christian Country” format about 11 years ago on the terrestrial station KYMS 89.9 FM in (Spokane, WA DMA). All worked well, about 3 years ago, WUCG 93.1 reached out about sharing the format on their station which led to the purchase of Legacy’s second station in Dahlonega, Ga – WCDG 88.7 FM. Early 2022, Town Square Media reached out with an opportunity to add KHKM 98.7 FM, a 100,000-watt radio station in Missoula, MT. Now, Today’s Christian Country is on 4 radio stations, in the process of building two more radio stations and continuously looking for expansion opportunities. “For those who aren’t familiar,” Lee explains, “with the differences between Christian Country and Southern Gospel” – “it’s Everything!” With over 40 years of history in mind, Lancaster is proud of Southern Gospel with its long list of great artists, it just isn’t Christian Country Music. In fact, Today’s Christian Country format includes many of the same artists as your local country radio station. The faithbased cuts from mainstream country artists like George Strait, Carrie Underwood, Brad Paisley, Cody Johnson and more are mixed with the great pool of Christian Country artist like Scott Mac Brown, Delnora, Olivia Lane, Barry Lee White, Zach Ray and many more. When you put that all together with exceptional DJ talent, you have the format that makes Lee very proud. “To be honest,” said Lee “I would put this radio format up against any country radio station in America.” It has been a hard-fought battle for the Christian Country radio stations, Lee was asked back in the mid 90’s to do a Christian Country countdown – finding the talent to match the mainstream counterparts was nearly impossible, not enough to maintain a chart. Today, organizations like Inspirational Country Music Association (ICMA) and American Christian Country Music Association (ACCMA) are supporting/promoting the genre and artists. The countdown chart issue disappeared with radio stations all over America catching up with the popularity of Christian Country music resulting in recognized charts like the Power Source Magazine Christian Country Top 40, Cashbox Christian Country 100, ACCMA Christian Country Top 40 and more. “Today, you can see the popularity and growth on the charts,” said Lee, “You have Mainstream and Christian Country artists doing duets and so much more together.” The future is limitless with talents like Lee Lancaster supporting, promoting, and purposed to grow the genre. Lee can be reached at lee@legacybroadcasting.org 38

As a musician, it’s hard to put into words the impact that certain musicians can bring to bear. Growing up I listened to Gospel musicians, Country musicians and Bluegrass musicians that were a great influence on developing my tastes and musical style. As I grew into playing the piano there were styles that really piqued my interest. Early on the Gospel quartet piano men who captured my attention were Jackie Marshall, Howie Lister, Wally Varner and others. As I began to love the country sound, I paid particular attention to Tommy Fairchild of the Oak Ridge Boys because he played very similar to the great Floyd Cramer. Cramer’s playing style was the first country style piano that tripped my trigger. I began to learn the slip note style and soon learned to play Last Date. I don’t remember the first record I heard Hargus “Pig” Robbins play on, but when I heard it, I was hooked! Pig took country style piano playing to a whole new level. I had never heard anything like it. His two handed “flop alternates” technique was different and so cool. I became a student of his playing from then on. There has been much said about anointing. Many believe that spiritual anointing is only applicable to music that is Christian in nature. I beg to differ. There is an anointing from God that rests on anything good. There is an anointing on good secular music. It’s a spirit connection. When Pig plays the piano, I always feel something from it. It speaks to my soul. It touches me down deep like nothing else can. It really doesn’t matter what the song is. When Pig gets down in the mid-range of the piano on a country ballad, the creative, tasty licks he plays are food for my soul. I didn’t know Pig Robbins as well as many of my Nashville friends, but I’m so blessed that I did get to know him and spend some time with him. He was on a few White River sessions, and I got to use him on a couple projects I produced in Nashville. I went to lunch a couple of times with Pig and my late friend Bobby All. Those experiences were a dream come true for me, just to get to hang with my hero for a little while. Pig autographed a picture of he and I together, probably only one of four or five people who had his autograph. As a blind man it was fascinating to watch him sign his name. What a treasure! Pig left a huge body of work. He played on more Country hits than any other piano player in history. He played many iconic intros and fills on some of the biggest hit records ever recorded in Nashville. Behind Closed Doors is one of the most famous intros he ever did. The famous lick he played on David Houston’s, Almost Persuaded, will never be forgotten. However, the work he did on George Jones’ album, Cold Hard Truth, is my favorite of all his work. I can’t listen to that record all the way through without crying. If you haven’t heard it, you must listen. The fills and intros on that record are stunning and truly inspiring. Absolutely anointed. When Hargus “Pig” Robbins passed away, I was heartbroken but blessed beyond measure to have known him, and to have been influenced by his God given talent. Thank you Lord, for exposing me to this man’s talent and personality. I know I’ll never be able to play just like him, but I’ll keep trying. Cogitate on this… Gene Reasoner 39

“Just Say Jesus" Kaleb Willis Kaleb Willis released his first single “Just Say Jesus” With its slow tempo guitar and his smooth voice, Kaleb brings us a raw but very powerful praise and worship song. ‘Just Say Jesus’ is an upbeat song, but with the message it fits to just a voice and a guitar allowing you to focus on the words. Giving praise to Jesus for being there when we can’t find our hope or words - JUST SAY JESUS.

"Thankful Grateful and BLESSED" Richard Lynch Once again Richard Lynch brings that traditional but still great country sound with his deep southern voice it will have you clapping and tapping. “Thankful Grateful And Blessed” is an upbeat song about how God has given him the directions in his life to get him to where he is today.

FROM THE TOP WITH MARTY SMITH Tell us about your journey to radio?

Marty Smith Morning Show Host Heaven's Country! Take It From TheTop! www.heavenscountry.com

I knew that God wanted me in radio. I didn't know a thing about radio broadcasting, but I knew that's what I was called to do. So, I started going to different radio stations asking if they were hiring. I was told no so many times I almost gave up, but I kept knocking on doors. Finally, a man by the name of Gary Babb gave me a chance. He was the owner of AM 1090 KEXS. It was the first station I ever worked for. It was a Southern Gospel music station, but we soon changed our format to Christian Country. We played artists like Paula McCulla, Ken Holloway, Bruce Haynes, Lisa Daggs, Mid South, White River, The Days and more. I worked there for three years and then moved to Denver, CO in 1993 to work at AM 560 KLZ and 800 AM KLTT, a Christian Country radio station. I spent a couple of years there and then went to work at KWBI 91.1 FM in Denver, CO. I also worked part-time at the Jones Satellite Radio Network in Denver. After a few years I went to work at KBIQ 102.7 FM in Colorado Springs, CO. I was the morning drive co-host with Bobbie Lemieux, and we were the number three morning show in town. Having a Christian radio station with the number three morning show was unheard of at the time. After a few years there I wound up moving to California and worked at Star 92.7 FM and The Cabin 93.5 FM. In 1992, I started my syndicated radio show, "Cross Country" (now called 'Today's Cross Country'). I still host that show today. A lot of people think I'm fairly new to this industry, but I was one of the first Disc Jockeys to play Christian Country music. I've been on the air for over thirty-two years now.

In 2008, I was introduced to Internet radio. I built my online radio station, Heaven's Country (www.heavenscountry.com) and went LIVE on April 1, 2011. We play Christian Country, Positive Country and Bluegrass. We're also on iHeart Radio which gives us a bigger platform to share Christian Country with the world. In June of 2022, Heaven's Country teamed up with AM 1070 WEKT Heavenly Country in Elkton, KY to broadcast our radio feed overnights so we're now on the AM Dial. I currently host the syndicated television show, "The Nashville Corner", which airs on Family Friendly Entertainment (FFE) under the umbrella of Nashville 37201 TV. It's owned by Bev McCann and Jim Sheldon, I'm a member of Absolutely Gospel and Absolutely Country, owned by Bev McCann, the International Country Gospel Music Association, Texoma Gospel Music Association and the Country Music Association. I'm also Vice President of The American Christian Country Music Association. It's an organization designed to help artists, promoters, songwriters, and radio disc jockeys learn how to invest and grow their ministries. I also have the privilege of mentoring other disc jockeys and help them build their online radio stations. My morning show, "Mar-Tay In The Morning" airs weekdays at 7 AM Central Monday through Friday and is simulcast on Heaven's Country, King Country Radio, Country Gold Radio, Branson Gospel Radio, God's Country Radio, WGHC TV and the WOTG Radio and Television network. You can also watch me on You Tube (@HeavensCountryRadio), Facebook, Twitter, Twitch, and Instagram.

What is your musical influence journey and where did Christian Country come into it for you? My parents listened to country music when I was growing up. I loved listening to Charlie Rich, Charlie Pride, Margo Smith, Barbara Fairchild, and the Statler Brothers. In the 80's my biggest musical influence was Ronnie Milsap, Randy Travis, and the group Alabama. I loved their sound and their message. I still remember hearing, "My Home's In Alabama” and the words, 'Drinking was forbidden in my Christian Country Home". It was the first time I ever heard the term, "Christian Country". Little did I know at the time that I would play a big part in helping get this genre of music off the ground. As for Ronnie Milsap, Alabama, and Randy Travis, I still play a lot of their songs on Heaven's Country. They just had a way of communicating with you through their songs and the messages in those songs still touch me today. I try to bring that feeling to the airwaves.

Tell us about yourself, hobbies, fun things? I'm very passionate about what I do with radio. It's what God called me to do. I'm still amazed after all these years that people still want to listen to me. There are billions of choices out there, but I still get people that love tuning in. I love to have fun and share this music with the world. I love getting up in the morning and hosting my morning show and seeing the comments from my viewers. I get emails from people all over the world thanking me for playing Christian Country Music. Most of my time is spent in the Heaven's Country studio and making sure things run smoothly. However, when I can get away, I love to go kayaking. There's nothing like being on the water.

ON ROAD

THE READS Have you ever asked what the point of your local Christian Radio station is? Have you often wondered about their plans and purpose? Are you confused by some of the songs they play on air? Do you wonder in today's Internet savvy world, is there even a need for your local Christian Radio station? If you have ever wondered about why your local Christian Radio station exists, then this is the book for you. In Powerful Christian Radio, author Josh Reid explains in easy-to-read language, the Strategy, Impact and Ministry of your local Christian Radio station. In other words how does God touch people's lives through the ministry of Christian Radio. Using practical real-life examples, this book will show you things you don't know about Christian Radio and challenge your thinking in the way you view it. In a world that’s gone Internet crazy it’s easy to convince churches and ministries about the importance of using web strategies or social media as evangelism tools. After all, with more than one billion users, Facebook is now the third largest country in the world, which means it’s time to start sending missionaries and planting churches in that country. Online evangelism is an easy sell to a new generation of pastors and leaders who have been posting their lives online since childhood. But lost in the Internet frenzy is the power of traditional media – particularly radio. "It’s required reading if your goal is to impact this culture with a message of hope. The Internet may be getting all the publicity these days, but radio is alive and well. Do yourself a favor and read this book." - Phil Cooke.

Josh Reid, an Australian media professional involved in producing film, television, and radio, writes and speaks internationally on the influence media has on our culture. BOBBY STILL WINNING AT 91! Bluegrass living legend Bobby Osborne accepted a Governor’s Award for the Arts from Kentucky Governor, Andy Beshear. Now 91 years of age and still actively performing, Bobby and his younger brother, Sonny, set bluegrass on a new track starting in the 1950s as the Osborne Brothers, with a different style of harmony singing featuring his distinctly pure tenor voice on top. Hits for the Osborne Brothers include such classics as Once More, Ruby Are You Mad, Making Plans, Up This Hill and Down, Windy City, Midnight Flyer, Tennessee Hound Dog, and surely their most enduring song, sometimes described as the “National Anthem of Bluegrass,” Rocky Top. Prior to forming The Osborne Brothers, Bobby has been a member of the Lonesome Pine Fiddlers.

It could be a trip to the store, heading to work or a grand road trip…it does not seem to matter…we want to tune into something! Maybe a podcast, audio book or the incredible sounds of our favorite songs. We want to TUNE IN and with today’s technology you can get tuned in 24/7 – 365 days of the year. This “need” that we must tune into something is part of creation, how we were created by God. He is the great communicator, in fact, God is always communicating with us 24/7 – 365 days of the year. The question is “Are you tuned into God’s station?”

KGOD Imagine if God used a radio station for communication, maybe a call sign like KGOD. The station would run all the time; however, the requirement would be just as all radio stations…YOU HAVE TO SEEK THE STATION TO HEAR WHATS PLAYING. Now the question is “How do we tune in to God’s station?” Throughout the Bible you will find men and women who share their story of how God spoke to them. The key to hearing the voice of the Lord had to do with their willingness to tune into God’s voice. There are also many instances in the Bible when the individual tuned God out. These individuals did not want to listen to what God was telling them so they changed the station. Samuel from a young age fully engaged to tune all in. I Samuel 3:11-14 teaches us that the person who is surrendered to the Lord and is willing to tune in will receive the signal and learn God’s Will. The truth is if we fail to be tuned into God it will affect our lives, our families’ lives, and our nation’s security. Do not tune out due to wrong expectations - Eli, being the priest thought his sons would just “get it” because they lived in the house of the Lord.

There were two men of God…one became God’s honorable spokesman because he tuned into God whereas the other one tuned God out and paid the price of his actions and died in dishonor. The two: Eli the fallen priest and Samuel the Prophet of God. One man was a failure & the other man successful. One finished poorly and the other finished strong. One tuned in / the other tuned out…Eli tuned out! He was too busy listening to worldly stations of the day.
