THE

FATHER

OF OUTLAW Entering the room, a voice bellows out “Well, Hello There.” It is the hardy welcome of the one and only Cody McCarver, who spent over a decade with country music super-group, Confederate Railroad, followed by the successful solo career that continues to date. This could be your first-time meeting, or you could be a lifelong friend, there is no way to tell the difference as he will make you feel as if he has been waiting just for this moment in time to meet, chat, share or work with you.

He is very happy in his hometown of Dunlap, Tennessee, the place where he was raised. It is a small-town rich in history and like most small towns, it was and remains centered around church. Cody became the church pianist at the tender age of nine years old. “I loved Southern Gospel Music, like Teddy Huffman and the Gems,” said Cody, “my dad would take me to big Southern Gospel events, they were superstars to me.”

Listening to the radio in a 1970 Ford Pinto is one of the earlier musical memories for Cody, it was the sounds of Lynard Skynard, the Marshall Tucker band and Kiss that caught his attention. “Son, you need to listen

to Country Music,” are the words Cody would hear from his dad. The rebel streak was strong and unwavering until his dad brought home Waylon Jennings “The Outlaws” album. In secret, to keep the rebel streak alive, Cody would listen to it over and over every time his father wasn’t around. “I went through many phases in music, but always would go back to that album,” explained McCarver. It was the inspiration that set the foundation for the music that still moves him most.

Off and away from his hometown, Cody was playing in bars, enjoying the music, the accolades, the fame of being a part of mainstream country music success. For his dad, music was not what he wished for his only son, in the success, he became the biggest fan. On August 14, 1996, the day started as just the birthday of Cody McCarver but ended altering many lives. That day, Cody received a call from the local jail, there he found his father in a call charged with murder. “My mom was having an affair and that day my dad ended that affair,” said Cody, “on his birthday in 1998, he was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole in 2051.” This part of his life, this story has greatly inspired his songs…especially the song that garnered Cody the Music Row Independent Artist of the Year... “Through Gods Eyes."

His dad would spend 15 years in jail, while Cody prayed continuously for God to get him out of that prison. His heart was determined, his hope was wrapped in it and in 2013 at the news of his father passing away in the prison…Cody was crushed and furious with God. The following morning, while he sat on the side of his bed, McCarver heard the voice of his Lord saying, “I got your dad out of prison.”

Retrieving his father’s belongings from the prison led to the discovery of a Bible and how important church on the inside of those prison walls had been to his dad. After speaking with the prison Chaplin, the truth that his father was with the Lord and that Cody’s prayers had not gone unanswered were made known to his heart and mind.

The saddest thing about this life story is the debacle brought upon the McCarver family by the church of which they loved and were devoted. The pastor and another man came to the family home to disfellowship them all based on the disapproval of Cody’s mother wearing makeup and jewelry. It was all he knew growing up, “I was born on a Monday, taken to church on Sunday…same church my whole life,” shared McCarver, “So, a man, not God came to our home to say we would never see heaven and our family fell apart.” This event led the family down a path of prescription drugs, alcoholism, prison, and incredible heartache. It could have been the end story for them all, but it wasn’t as God was present with them and waiting. Cody shares that it took 20 years to realize that a man did all that, not God. That his faith was in man, not his Lord. The same man who refused to attend church, disliked church people is now in love with church and all God’s people. His mother is doing great, and Cody has been sober since 2013. At his lowest point, with no church to go to, Cody went back to the only Church he had ever know. That man who kicked his family out was the Pastor, this time it was a welcome and invitation to sing. Cody thinks the Lord has quite a sense of humor, happily he attends that church today.

“My hobby is probably songwriting, but I love riding my Harley and I love fishing.” expressed Cody who never thought of himself or felt like a songwriter.

Usually in the business of songwriting, the professionals get together, writing several songs in a set number of days. For McCarver it is the inspiration of something he said or that God said to him and just grabbing the guitar or sitting down at the piano in prayer. “Sometimes I write a song in 20 minutes or maybe a week,” said Cody, “One song took me 5 years.”

His song, “The Lord’s Will” is about his dad’s death in prison while “Hey God” is the full testimony of Cody McCarver. After writing those, he took them to Nashville to meet with the Christian music industry. The meeting was a great learning experience as he was unaware of the varied gospel music genres.

The biggest lesson was that it is a business, a contrast to the on fire for God Cody who didn’t care about the money, just sharing his story of shame and new life in Jesus with the world. Told his voice was too gruff, his look too rough and his lyrics too raw for contemporary Christian music. The words, “Outlaw Country vibe” were expressed in explanation of why he didn’t fit. In joking response, he stated maybe he would just do his own thing and call it “Outlaw Gospel.” Following that incredible moment, the confirmations from the Lord could not be ignored, Romans 6:14, a book titled Beautiful Outlaw, and on and on. “Jesus was considered an Outlaw, matter of fact he is the most famous Outlaw ever,” explained Cody, “The Church crucified Jesus, bet they wish they could take that back!”

With a phone call to Jeff Mankin, owner of a cd manufacturing company and close like a brother friend to McCarver…a new genre of Christian music was created and trademarked. It is OUTLAW GOSPEL! “God made it clear to me that I had run wild long enough, to come back and share,” said Cody, “His hand was always on me, and Outlaw Gospel is the best way I know to do what I am to do.”

Spending time with Cody McCarver, you get the sense of a real small-town boy who grew up with dreams and they came true in a raw, authentic way to create the man you see today. A man of faith, family, and hometown!

Taking part in the restoration of Dunlap, Tennessee is expressing the deep love Cody has for his hometown, for all small towns. Saving buildings from the 1800’s from demolition, bringing them back to life and sharing with the world is just one of the things outside of music that drives him, however, music remains the focal point, included in all aspects of the restoration. He is a walking and talking historian making stories come to life as he speaks much like a song without music. But don’t worry, he will break into a little jingle at any time.

Walking through the town is an incredible opportunity, from the Dunlap Mercantile to Studio Dunlap to all the shops, people and places that make the home of Outlaw Gospel a unique place. So much is happening here, and even more daily with Cody as a typical day consists of rising with prayer and coffee, followed by a little songwriting then off to the studio to edit a TV show that he is currently producing, little prayer and some more coffee, more editing, more prayer, more coffee, little dinner, some television, prayer and finally bed. All along the way, Cody is handling at least 800 calls to his phone. He is never frustrated, forever grateful for the opportunities to share Jesus, to experience more Jesus. Listening to him talk about it, you find yourself smiling about the coffee and inspired by the constant state of prayer he makes priority.

Cody practices what he preaches, giving profound words of advice to industry artists… “be yourself, yourself is either good enough or it's not, but at least you won’t lose yourself in the process of trying to be someone or something that others think you should be.” “Well, actually I asked Merle Haggard if he had any advice for a young artist trying to get into the music business and he replied to find another business,” laughed Cody, “that was pretty good.”

It is the blunt honesty that you appreciate working with Cody, a mutual respect that he sets in motion along with the mutual expectation that if he shares his honest thoughts on your project that you do likewise for him. Going through the town of Dunlap, he is the beloved local boy that is now a beloved hometown man. He never meets a stranger; spreads love to all he encounters and a few jokes as well.

Bringing fun to excellence is a driving force behind this larger-than-life person with a love for sharing the gospel and making Jesus real for people.

Knowing the man behind the talent makes it all clear why he is called to be the Father of Outlaw Gospel. He is the one to make it real, to bring together the musicians, the artists, the sound that puts the word in raw form to the masses in music just as the original Outlaw Jesus did so long ago!

Artist Spotlight Can I get an “Amen” for the Barstool Preacher? He is rocking the Christian World with his music and landed #1 on the September Power Source Top 40!

The lyrics of the song “Amen” are somewhat autobiographical to the real story behind the artist Jacob Bryant.

At the young age of 8 years old, Jacob Bryant picked up the guitar with the simple desire to be good enough to play with his grandparent’s Bluegrass band. He would sneak his grandpa’s guitar out and teach himself to play the chords. Growing up in Georgia, he continued his love and passion for music which led to playing guitar, drums, and singing in church. He was destined for stardom, everyone said so, especially his mom. There was one problem, Jacob was incredibly shy, so he skirted around the accolades and praise of all as he could not imagine a life in the spotlight.

So how did that shy boy get “Amen” on the Power Source Top 40? Back in 2010, his precious mom passed away and her voice in his heart was purposed, so instead of why me, he said why not me. The familiar story of heading off to Nashville and being led astray comes into the story at this point, but it didn’t last as the called artist inside battled to His purposed place of destiny.

In February of this year, Jacob Bryant walked into the “Mother Church of Country Music” for his debut on the Grand Ole Opry Stage. “It was overwhelming, in a good way,” said Bryant, “like everything could end right now and I would be smiling forever.” He made quite an impression, receiving two standing ovations for his performance. Country Artist and Jacob’s good friend, Mark Wills was on hand to introduce him making the moment extra special.

For him, “Amen” is a song he should of and could have written as the words express his story and his triumphs in life.

He is an artist that is a Christian, not to be confused with a Christian Artist, a difference that is very important to Jacob as he wants to always remain genuine, raw, and relatable to all. The priority is to know that this golf loving, grill master, family man loves to share his music and the message that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the light.

Jacob Bryant is the proud father of daughter Naomi, son Weston and shares life with his beautiful wife, Brittany. He is a busy man being a good steward of the blessings of life. STREET PREACHIN’, LOVE OR HATE I admire those who are passionate about spreading the Gospel and witnessing for Christ. Most of us are too timid to approach someone about Jesus and we often miss opportunities to witness. In years gone by, it wasn’t uncommon to see people preaching on the streets, especially in the seedy parts of our larger cities. You would see someone on the street corner or in front of a bar preaching hellfire and brimstone.

Street preaching is no longer common. The culture has changed. Information comes to us from so many different sources, with social media and other digital platforms leading the way. As time moves on, our methods evolve as we navigate through life. Our message is also changing and adapting to the culture.

The challenge is to be careful not to compromise the message, but to deliver truth in a way that will attract people and not scare them away.

A few years ago, I was blessed to cross something off my bucket list. I’m a NASCAR fan, and I finally got to go to the Daytona 500 in Daytona Beach, Florida. The racetrack there is a 2.5-mile track, so the entire facility is immense. Just over 100,000 people poured into the monstrous stadium surrounding the track. As we entered the facility, we began to hear something I haven’t heard in a long while. Street preaching.

Scattered randomly throughout the stadium, especially where the fans were entering and exiting, were men with portable PA systems, preaching to the tens of thousands of people coming and going. We passed by several of these preachers and as I listened to them, I was quite disturbed by the content and tone of their message. Don’t misunderstand me, I admired their boldness, but I certainly question the message they were giving. It was almost like they were mad at the

unbelievers. The message was very judgmental and condemning. It was prideful, with no love in it. God was being presented as an angry, vengeful God, all too happy to send the heathen to hell. Amazingly, I observed hardly anyone stopping to listen. People picked up their pace so they could pass by quickly. I overheard more than one person utter unkind remarks and insults toward the preachers. It was offensive to people, to say the least. As a believer, I was offended by the attitude of the preaching. It was very embarrassing. It was all about God being mad at them for their sin. I heard no mention of God loving them, or that they could come to him just as they are.

I was raised on hellfire and brimstone preaching. I understand that way of thinking. But in today’s world, that message is no longer effective. Jesus must be portrayed as he really is, full of love, compassion, and forgiveness. In the Gospels, we always see Jesus loving people, reaching out to them with open arms. Even the story of the prodigal son shows the father running toward the wayward son, to embrace him, giving him a robe and a ring, and throwing a party that lasted for days! That’s the message the world needs to hear, and they need to hear it with love, not condemnation and hate.

That day at Daytona, I felt like those well-meaning folks were doing the Kingdom great damage, and instead of drawing people to Jesus, they were pushing them away.

They made the Gospel something for people to laugh at and make fun of. In today’s seeker friendly, politically correct world, we must be wise in the way we present the Gospel. I believe we can share Jesus in an uncompromising way, with love and compassion that draws people to Him and doesn’t push them away.

Wise as serpents, harmless as doves.

OUTLAW GOSPEL

We follow the best-known Rebel in all History - JESUS CHRIST. HE was an OUTLAW in his own land, hunted by many, hated by many, followed by many, and loved by many. HE did not come to Conform - he came to Save. Many of us fall into a rut and can never pull out of it. "OUTLAW GOSPEL MINISTRIES" is simply a tool to connect with those who are "out on the sidelines" watching all of us who are Christians and trying to decide if they want to join in or not - the lost. At times... we can't blame them. Some of us are not very nice to one another.

"Outlaw Gospel" was coined by Cody McCarver (formerly of Confederate Railroad) and Jeff (JT) Mankin (owner of JT Mankin, Ent. and Co-owner of WTS Media, Inc. CD & DVD Replication – Chattanooga, TN) as they tried to fit the songs, they were writing for a new CD project called "The Lord's Will" into the different Genres of music today - and it just did not fit. The execs in Nashville told us, “It’s just too Outlaw sounding for Gospel Radio" So what they found was that many of the songs "had no place to call home" in today's Gospel Genre. The music they were writing did not "fit" Contemporary Christian, Southern Gospel, or the “Red Book Hymnal” style of good ole’ Christian music we all grew up with... so... "Outlaw Gospel" was born. Jeff and Cody started asking around and found that many other artists had written songs that did not fit the “mainstream” Music Genres either, so they decided to branch out and start their own – “Outlaw Gospel Music” - a place where artists can all come together and have their songs heard that also "had no place to call home" - until now.

"How OUTLAW GOSPEL found its roots: Those who have studied the Bible know that Jesus was a Rebel in his own land. His ideas and teachings shook the entire nation. Many looked at him as a SAVIOR. Many looked at him as an OUTLAW. In his own words Jesus said, “Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have lodging places, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”

(MATTHEW 8:20). Spiritually, there are many men and women today – many you may know - who have no place to lay their head. For whatever reason, they are not approached and talked about the one person who came to give “them” hope - JESUS CHRIST. OUTLAW GOSPEL is not only breaking ground for a new Genre of music, but it is also a MINISTRY – a new tool to reach out to those who too have no place to lay their head.

MAN IN BLACK

I was told that this would be the Outlaw Gospel Issue and that it would be nice if I could go with the theme. I found this a tall order as I think of Outlaw Gospel as an ancient Roman problem, or something to be wrestled with under Communism, or a government based on a faith that cannot withstand the light of the Good News.

But as I thought and turned this over in my mind the words Country Music, Faith, and Outlaw all jumbled up and the answer came out. Johnny Cash.

A few years back some friends of mine moved to Tennessee and gave me several boxes of their books to go through and donate to our local library. In one box was a copy of a book published in 1975 and written by Johnny Cash called Man in Black. I kept it on a whim and thought of it when Outlaw Gospel came up. It is only 182 pages long with twenty chapters. In the first line of the book Johnny calls it “a spiritual odyssey”. That was all I needed to read it.

Those of us in my generation, rock & roll fans, born at the end of the 1960s, know Johnny Cash as a tough guy.

We know of him singing in Folsom Prison and of his drugs and carousing. We know the “Man in Black”. I dimly knew he probably sang some gospel as that seemed to be a requirement of country music at the time, much like a power ballad from a 1980’s hair band. But what did he believe?

He was 43 when he wrote this book – about halfway through his life’s journey.

He still had many, many, struggles to go particularly with drugs which he called the “demon” that would get him time and time again. His drug addiction was tied to his job – uppers and downers to preform and then to sleep – later drug addiction happened due to pain killers after surgery.

His faith is what helped him beat the demon again and again.

But also, at the time he wrote Man in Black, he was a devout Christian and he had performed in churches and revivals, made a film called Gospel Road which was the story of Jesus, and performed about forty prison concerts across the country.He performed hoping that the inmates would know someone cared about them while they were there and because he was a Christian. Following one of his prison concerts, Cash received a letter from an inmate where the inmate references “Jesus being sent to the captives” and “I saw Him in you today”.

Carl Perkins, the Statler Brothers, the Tennessee Three, and the Carter Family performed with Johnny Cash on these prison tours. Notably, Reverend Floyd Gressett, Johnny Cash’s paster, joined him on these prison tours as well. It was Rev Gressett that gave Johnny the words to the song “Greystone Chapel” that a prisoner named Glen Sherley had written:

As a side note: On January 1, 1958, one of the prisoners in San Quentin that saw Johnny Cash play was Merle Haggard.

Johnny Cash took service to his country seriously. He was the son of a World War I veteran and believed that many generations of his family had fought for the United States. Cash entered the US Air Force in 1950 and was honorably discharged in 1954 as a Staff Sergeant.

You may have heard the spoken word song “Ragged Old Flag” about a man discussing the flag at the courthouse and all the things it has been through over the years.Many people don’t realize that’s Johnny Cash and that he wrote the song.

Johnny Cash was a man of many contradictions, as are we all. He wrestled with life setbacks of drugs and carousing, especially early on in his life. But his faith brought him back and guided him to a better way. He deeply loved his country.

And he was an outspoken advocate for the disadvantaged, the downtrodden, the poor, the sick, veterans (specifically of Vietnam), and Native American Indians.

He has a reputation as the ultimate tough guy outlaw; however, he was a committed Christian, patriot, and later a family man.

And the “Man in Black”? According to Johnny Cash, “Black is better for church”.

There’s a Greystone Chapel here at Folsom, A house of worship in this den of sin, You wouldn’t think God had a place here at Folsom, But he’s saved the soul of many lost men. Inside the walls of prison my body may be, But the Lord has set my soul free.

10-point Radio Ready Song Checklist

Is there a checklist I can go by to make sure my song is ready for single release?

As a professional writer who has also been in radio promotion, I’m lucky enough to have some insight on this from a few different angles. Hopefully this helps.

1 - Title.

As I mentioned this in the last article, it’s worth repeating again, because it’s so relevant to the standout power of your single as well. The very first thing I personally do, even before I sit down to write the song, is go to BMI.com and do a title search. If my title is “Thank God for Pizza” for instance, I will type in “Thank God for Pizza” under title search and see if many people have registered that title before. An original title is your best chance at getting a song listened to right away. It shows you are creative and perhaps don’t wish to get your royalty checks mixed up with the other songs registered by the same title, which has happened before. It should be noted that I often literally thank God for pizza but that’s neither here nor there.

2 - Theme check.

Look over the current charts and make sure there isn’t another song, or multiple songs, with your same theme that is doing very well, especially if it’s the same tempo and gender of the artist. If the top 10 song is “Daddy was the best” and your song is “there’s never been a better daddy”, maybe it’s best to save that song for further down the line and release something radio is talking about now.

3 - Producer.

Has the producer I’ve chosen for my song produced previous songs that have hit the top 100 chart in the genre I’m going for? If they have not, it doesn’t mean that they are not as talented, but previous track record of success lets you know that radio has embraced their work before. It’s difficult to argue with proven track records, and we all want to take less of a risk with the financial investment in our career.

4 - Lyrical strength.

Is this lyric finished, in my mind, simply because it rhymes, or have I gone through it many times with a fine tooth comb, eliminating the weakest line and replacing it with something I haven’t said or heard before. If I pick up this lyric and read it out loud, with no music, is it something I’m excited about or not? A catchy groove can only hide so much.

5 - Tuning.

Are my vocals tuned? The vocal is the icing on the cake. If you are falling flat on some of the notes, the audience will be disconnected and change the station. Don’t skip steps to save money. Save enough money to take all the steps! Tuning is caring.

6 - Time length.

Is my song under four minutes? Surpassing the four-minute mark is typically the kiss of death for radio singles. There are always exceptions, but this is a great rule of thumb to go by in the editing room. Ain’t nobody got time for that 4th verse! We barely want to wait the 55 seconds for our corndog to heat up in the microwave:) My daughter heated hers up for 16 minutes the other day. It didn’t turn out well, for some reason.

7 - Feedback!

No, your mama doesn’t count, even though she should be cherished. Our friends and family have a tough time giving us the cold, hard truth and in most cases, they can’t hear the difference between mediocre and excellent because they love you. Ask a few folks in the industry that you trust (radio, publishers, radio promoters, professional writers, etc.) If the same problem keeps popping up in their critiques, then you may need to brush pride aside and be willing to tweak. Excellence is your best chance for success.

8 - Tempo, tempo, tempo.

There are a lot of amazing ballads that hit #1 on the charts. However, if you are looking for the greatest chance at radio play, in any genre, crank out the up-tempo music. They are harder to come by, more sought after by the stations that need to keep the listeners from losing interest. I’ve been very lucky to have had over a dozen #1’s in Christian country and most have been mid to up-tempo.

9 - Harmonies.

This should go without saying, but I’ve been surprised several times to hear choruses without harmonies, because the artist wanted to save money. In my experience leaving vocals off a chorus makes it sound more like a demo and not a finished product. Harmonies are the ear candy that often tell you when the chorus begins, especially when there’s not a huge vocal explosion to differentiate the verse and chorus. Imagine, for instance, a Southern Gospel song when the chorus hit, and the other 3 guys just stood there and forgot to sing. The audience can tell something is missing.

I’ve also found it best to be patient with your singles. If you have 2 songs you're stoked about and you want them to chart as high as possible, do not release the 2nd song until the first song has reached its peak and started to fall. You can shoot yourself in the foot otherwise and get them excited about the new song before the last one was finished climbing. “Out with the old / in with the new” is still true in radio, as well as the leftover Chinese food in my fridge.

In the beginning of the ministry, it was hard for Andrew to build an identity within music genres, "I am often at a loss for words when asked is it country, rock or southern rock?' shared Marshall, "YES!!, it is all of those and more." Sending songs to rock stations only to be told he was too country, then sending to country to be told he was too rock and the gospel stations just said no. Nashville welcomed the talent of the artist with the requirement of changing the sound to the more as per usual for Christian Country. Then came Inspirational Country Music Association which afforded Andrew the ability to network, share and grow as an artist. His wife Charlene is a member of the board and director of ICM Cares, an outreach program of the association.

The connection with ICMA led to meeting Cody McCarver and learning about a thing called OUTLAW GOSPEL. "Ever since that meeting, I have referred to what we do as Outlaw Gospel." said Andrew," you may think it's a sound which is partially right, but for me it encompasses a belief system."

If Nashville is the gatekeeper of sounds for country genres, that makes it the Law so to speak for Andrew, and he wants to be more like the Outlaw Jesus who delivered the authentic version of Himself everywhere he went. He represented the Passion without pause for the way it had always been done.

You are the prophesying in your own life, you cannot speak failure and expect success. Give attention to what you are saying about yourself, your family, your work, your money - you are going to create whatever you speak.

"You will eat the fruit of your words" (Proverbs 18:21) Get in the habit of speaking success over your life. Each moment of the day, speak what God speaks about you, say out loud right now..."I am blessed. I am strong. I am healthy. Something great is happening today." It isn't enough to just think in this manner, we must give life to our faith by speaking it out. The fruit of those words is blessing, success, favor and abundance. Make notes for yourself, written words that you can speak during the good, bad and indifferent times.

In the tough days or times of our life, we cannot complain, it just makes it worse and gives life to the negative. BUT we can speak out, "Heavenly Father, thank you for being with me, going before me and fighting my battles. I am coming it out of this, thank you for the victory."

Well, let's simplify it: We are not perfect, nor can we become perfect on our own. But we as Christians and through Christ should strive for that mark anyway!!

There are 36 scriptures in the bible directing us toward striving for that mark of unattainable perfection. Why would we strive for something we could never have in this life? If you chase perfection, you will CATCH Excellence. It is inevitable.

Now, here’s the problem with catching excellence and living that life… It can often bring arrogance that becomes an oxymoronic paradox within itself. Arrogance is NOT excellence. In fact, arrogance is counterproductive to excellence. Arrogance is blinding and will fool you into a false sense of security. How do we avoid this?

First, do NOT believe your own propaganda. When we are discussing ourselves, we often embellish a tad, we include our accolades and achievements. Sometimes we forget who else was involved and what brought us to where we are. No one is an island.

Second, by definition of the word ‘Christian” we should strive to be “Christ Like”, a servant to and for others.

By striving for perfection and reaching excellence, it will bring us to a place where we can help others even more and more.

Finally, let's face it, none of us are all that great! If not for the grace of God and the blood of Christ, we are all doomed. This lifestyle of excellence should be a goal to do more for the kingdom of God, not to uplift ourselves. Stay focused, correct yourself, be listening for the voice of the spirit who will guide you, pray for a revelation of yourself to yourself, ask God to direct you and to keep you in check. It is better to allow God to direct you in your journey to a life of excellence than to ignore him. Someone somewhere will DEFINITELY put you in your place if you are arrogant. I’d rather have God's voice softly correct me than to have it publicly done by someone else.

Ellen Muriel Deason (1919 – 2012), professionally known as Kitty Wells, the “Queen of Country Music”, was known for her bold influence towards women in country music. Wells was taught how to play the guitar at a young age by her father and began singing with her sisters as a teenager under the name the Deason Sisters.

Her first radio debut was on a local radio station in 1936. Wells began singing on records in 1949 but was quickly dropped; a record promotor did not want to promote any female singers. After considering full retirement from music, Wells was contacted by an executive at Decca Records to record the song “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honkey Tonk Angels”. This song was very controversial for its time and was banned by several radio stations and the Grand Ole Opry. However, the fans grew to love the song and it sold over 800,000 copies in the summer of 1952. Wells boldness in agreeing to perform this song broke down a barrier for women in country music for generations to come. She became “The First Female Singer to Peak at Number One in The Eight-Year History of The Country Music Chart” according to Country Music Hall of Fame.

From the time of birth, Jesus was viewed as a bold outlaw. He was on a mission to minister, not just in the temple, but in the streets, in every place, and in every season where He journeyed here on earth.

As Christ followers, we too should be bold outlaws of faith. Not criminals looking to break the laws of the land that we are called to obey in Romans 13:1-7, but “outlaws” who are willing to rise above the threat of social rejection and boldly share our grief, scars, questions, doubts, stories, etc. with each other. Too often we hide both our struggles and the work of God in our lives from others who would benefit from hearing it. In failing to share these things, not only do we do a disservice to others and His Kingdom, but we can find ourselves dealing with, and sometimes even drowning in, self-pity, shame, and loneliness.

1 John 4:4 says, “Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.” This world will always need bold Christ following outlaws who use their gifts, courage, and determination to stand firm for His Kingdom in our relationships, communities, society, and in the world.

In Matthew 28:19 Jesus instructs us to go make disciples in all the nations.

Charles Spurgeon said, “Let us not be brave for the world and cowardly for Christ.”

As true Christ following outlaws, may we all obediently and boldly stand up, speak up, and show up in every season and situation life throws our way.

Because of Kitty Wells’ boldness to step outside of her comfort zone and be a beautiful outlaw in country music, she became an inspiration to artists such as Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, and so many others.

What will you boldly do today that could change someone else’s tomorrow for the better, or even their forever, in Jesus’ name?

That friend is a DJ. ‘Radio Friend” will have you singing along and thinking of that one DJ that you love hearing everyday and the ones that are now spinning the hits up in heaven.

Tommy Brandt - "Hook, Line & Sinker"

Country/Pop rockin’ “Forgiven,” gets your attention from the start. And you keep rockin’ into “Hook, Line and Sinker,” the title cut with lyrics by Tommy Brandt, gives you the feeling of stumbling into something special, and it’s already clinging to the top of the charts, so enjoy the ride. Just about all the material is solid, with tight songs for radio. “Pictures” is cleverly written with the ode to pictures and memories of the past. “I Believe in Angels” is solid Gospel Country style. “Cross Along The Road” really shows Tommy’s immensely likeable voice, that can stand with anyone and the scene is all too familiar. “Hi-O Silver” picks up the tempo with an upbeat outlook on life from a Christian perspective, great back-up harmonies, and it should have fans clapping along and keep his career full of life. This project demonstrates why this artist is a talent to watch. Tommy is not afraid to put his music out there and we all should enjoy it!

‘Hey Girl’ - Anne Wilson Anne Wilson brings that unique sound which is mixed up with some country pop and that down south voice to deliver an amazing song with a great message that girls of all ages forget from time to time. ‘Hey Girl 'is an anthem for the youngest to oldest of girls that when the world tries to tell you your worth, remember it's your worth with your creator that matters. This is an upbeat feel good song about yourself and who God created you to be.

Kathy Bell - "Fall At Your Feet" Kathy’s new album spices her gospel with strong lyrics. “I’m Gonna Keep On” starts out with an up-tempo song that has the flavor of country but actually is praise & worship. This album is fresh, with tunes of gospel, country, and smooth ballads. Cut number two ends with a whisper, and I find this to be a quiet album, designed for front and center listening.

This album is a must for those times of relaxing and meditation, a time to focus on God and his loving nature. The tempo is finally picked back up on “You’ll Never Fall”, as you are reminded that no matter what comes at you, you’ll never fall again! You’ve Tried ends the album with a message of overcoming the trials of life. Smooth vocals chime in on the back up as well as some clever guitar moves. DEAR DOLLY Dear Miss Dolly The starting of a letter or the words to a song, it could be either one as they are expressions from the heart of a child placed on paper for the eyes of the legendary Dolly Parton. The words written are from an adult’s reflection on a special time in childhood.

Dear Miss Dolly – I call you Miss Dolly because to me and my brother you have always been Miss Dolly.

Sometime around the late 1960’s to early 1970’s, a beloved Tennessee Pharmacist was enjoying his time at Sligo Boat Dock on Center Hill Lake when a customer asked the owner about finding himself someone who knew where to find those big bass fish. The answer was easy, as he was right there in that shop, the pharmacist who everyone knew as WM “Boonie” Hatfield was also known for finding the fish. That customer was none other than Country Music Legend Porter Waggoner and that was the beginning of a lifelong friendship between two avid fishermen.

As a family, we visited Porter’s boat house, Nashville condo and Television Show often, that’s where my brother and I met you! Bill was eight years old, and you asked him to marry you when he grew up.

WM Hatfield, aka Boonie was working on Signal Mountain in East Tennessee when he rushed his family to Nashville to see a taping of the Porter Waggoner Show. They were late arriving; the doors were locked so Hatfield got the security guards attention and asked him to tell Porter that they were there. The guard quickly returned and told him that he was instructed to open not just one door but both doors for Boonie and his family.

Another time, Porter forgot his tie and wore Dad’s tie on the show.

Hatfield was quite handy with electronics and had fashioned an 8-track cassette player on his fishing boat unknown to his fishing buddy. Upon arrival at the dock to go fishing, Porter was overwhelmed by hearing himself singing outside on the docks. Previously, he had given a complete set of tapes recorded by himself and Dolly Parton to Hatfield which was now being enjoyed on the dock in that rigged up fishing boat stereo. The best part of any memory are the moments that photography captures and that was another hobby of the pharmacist who could not have known what his camera lens was documenting, freezing in time so long ago.

We grew up singing along and knew every word by heart. My mother tells a story of going on your bus at Sligo and you showing her all your wigs and costumes.

The Sligo Boat Dock would play host to Porter Waggoner’s 50th birthday party which was attended by many Country Music legends and the most legendary of all ladies, Dolly Parton. The photos taken by WM Hatfield are timestamped by the hairdos and clothing, but the laughter, fun and love is timeless and leaps off the images. The entire cast and crew of the show was present that night to watch Porter open presents with his closest friends.

There are also wonderful stories of visiting the Grand Old Opry. I was told Porter had a photo of him and Dad in one of their fishing boats on his “Wall of Shame.”

The fishing buddies would remain close throughout the years from that first meeting to the passing of Porter Waggoner. Hatfield along with his son visited a few weeks before Porter passed, a memory he treasures greatly and captured in photos. It was an unlikely meeting of two men and the happenings across their lifelong friendship forever impacted one little girl when she met Dolly Parton.

So, you see, to me, you have always been apart of our home. My parents are both still living in Dunlap, Tennessee. I wanted to send you these photographs, made by my father at Porter’s birthday party.

There once was a little girl who had the chance to met Dolly Parton, she knew that it was a special thing but not really until she got older. She learned that little girls could grow up to be whatever they want to be. She learned that you don’t have to hide your creative side or eccentric side. She learned to be herself, to be giving, to be loving, to grow up strong and smart doing what she wanted to do in her way of doing it.

And that is exactly what she did, growing up to be a Dentist, amazing artist, loving wife and mother, survivor and community giving woman. She is bringing her incredible creative touch to the revitalization of Historic Dunlap, Tennessee. All in All, one would say she is the Dolly of Dunlap and that is a nickname for which she takes great pride, to her it is a seal of excellence!

Thank you for being such a precious part of my life – you are truly amazing.

SONG TRIPP'IN TENNESSEE ROAD TRIP TO DUNLAP, TENNESSEE Seven genres of music call the State of Tennessee home. More songs are written, recorded, and played live in Tennessee than anywhere else in the world. So, let’s do a little SONG TRIPP’IN through the 95 counties of Tennessee to see what musical richness we can find! Situated 30 miles north of Chattanooga, 50 miles from Crossville, 115 miles from Nashville and 120 miles from Knoxville we arrive in Sequatchie County.

Dunlap is the county seat of Sequatchie County, Tennessee. The city is located near the center of Sequatchie Valley, a narrow, 65-mile-long valley that slices through the Cumberland Plateau in southeastern Tennessee and northeastern Alabama. Several annual festivals, including a bluegrass festival, are held at the Dunlap Coke Ovens Park every year. The Historic Dunlap Coke Ovens Park is an 88-acre tree shaded park of 268 beehive coke ovens used in the early 1900’s to convert mountain coal into industrial coke, a product used to smelt iron ore. Dunlap is often referred to as the "Hang Gliding Capital of the East" and is home to the East Coast Hang Gliding Championships and a hang-gliding organization known as the Tennessee Tree Toppers.

Now that we have arrived in this great town, let’s find some music. First stop is the Dunlap Mercantile, right in the middle of downtown and what do you know, there is a stage in the store. This is the home of Outlaw Gospel, and we are welcomed by the one and only Cody McCarver. It is great to get a tour from this hometown favorite, currently working on a television project about this community and the restoration of these downtown buildings…and guess what?

Music is the foundation to it all

The restoration has included the opening of several venues for music, the 1st Annual Songwriter’s Festival held earlier this year was a huge success bringing music to all parts of Downtown Dunlap. The latest music opening is the DUNLAP STUDIOS and wow, it is spectacular! Décor inspired by the Grand Ole Opry and state of the art technology. There are well appointed and designed suites above the studio for lodging as well as a breathtaking outdoor area. It is an incredible place for writing, recording, and enjoying music.

Heading back into the Dunlap Mercantile, we are greeted by the bubbly Becky Card, she along with her husband Lewie Card are the secret sauce behind this incredible build back on the Dunlap downtown area. Becky grew up in Dunlap, served the area as a Dentist for over 20 years before retiring to Florida. The Cards enjoyed their time in Florida, but the sounds of home kept calling them back.

Spending time with Becky is a joy and she talks the musical history of this town as if she is singing a song…it just flows.

The music history song begins with Ed Brown, one of Tennessee’s most innovative and enduring banjo players, a bluegrass legend. Ed released two groundbreaking albums, Magnum Banjos, and Sequel to Magnum Banjos in the 1970s. The albums showcased some of the most exceptional and advanced double and triple chromatic banjo arrangements on record. Released through his local, independent record label, the albums remain highly sought after to date. Present day, Ed Brown plays with The Cumberland Band across the region at theatres, churches, and festivals. His music can be purchased at the Dunlap Mercantile…I picked up two by the Cumberland Band and that one famous Magnum Banjos, they are amazing!

I know that you have heard Garth Brooks # 1 single, “Two of a Kind, Workin’ on a Full House,” or Aaron Tippin’s “Working Man’s PHD.” The songwriter of those hits as well as songs for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Conway Twitty, George Jones, Earl Thomas Conley, Billy Dean, Martina McBride, Vern Goslin, Patty Loveless, and many more was a native of Dunlap, Tennessee. The chart-topping, award-winning, Bobby Boyd who began playing in his first band at the age of 12 called The Boyd Brothers. In the late 60’s and early 70’s, Bobby performed residencies at a club called The Castaways in Chattanooga, TN, sometimes playing five hours each night, six days a week, and learning his way in the music business. Though he’s mostly known for his country music contributions, Bobby Boyd also had a deep influence with the blues and R&B. His song “In Pictures” originally a Top 5 hit for Alabama, was the song Craig Wayne Boyd chose to sing on the finale of The Voice in 2014. Bobby Boyd passed away in 2017.

Much like a song, we have had an intro, two verses but we need to put a chorus in our town tune. Enter Dunlap’s beloved Cody McCarver, playing the piano at his church when only a small child, learning to write, sing and play music to a successful country music career both solo and with Country music supergroup, Confederate Railroad. It is a full circle journey for Cody as he is home bringing his Outlaw Gospel music to life, producing music and television, and utilizing every inch of Dunlap to spread the message of love and faith through music. It’s all about the message of the music and you can hear it!

The welcome mat is out, the music is all around, and Dunlap is the place to visit for relaxation, music, and beautiful mountain views. The inspiration for songwriters, the venues for performance and the innovative recording studio make this place very special for all.
