Artist Spotlight The is country music history to the artist behind the June Power Source Christian Country #1 song, "Wanted!" That's right, he has a country music legacy past down from his grandfather, the steel guitar playing friend of Patsy Cline. A change of plans kept Blake Helm's grandfather from the plane crash that took several music legends from our world. It is that connection that ignited a dream in Blake, inspiring him to walk the path to Nashville. However, it was not a clear path, it was by all accounts the road less traveled filled with speed bumps and exits that would of derailed most, not Helms, today he is exactly where God intended all along. After a 2019 church encounter that impacted a change of genre to Christian Country music followed by the 2020 ACCMA talent show, Blake Helms is 'WANTED" and climbing the charts with his music. More importantly, his music is impacting all that experience the lyrics, the music and the heart of this legend in the making. PowerSource Magazine had the chance to observe this talented artist in a session with radio professionals. It was his quest for the knowledge from those with experience that impressed. Blake Helms has made excellence a priority, he is determined to give his best, learn, connect, and spread the life changing word to everyone. He wants all to know they are "Wanted." Blake hails from Locust, North Carolina. These days life includes his wife and daughter. Growing up was full of significant highs and lows. At the age of five, Blake became the "man of the house," as his father departed. It made money very tight for his mom who still managed to save enough to buy her young son a guitar. The music came alive, his calling was coming into view when tragedy struck. Blake lost his beloved mom in a motorcycle accident resulting in the fifteen year old being sent to live with the dad he did not know. At sixteen, he was homeless with a guitar, dog and truck. At seventeen, he had his own place and all the temptations of life without guidance, it was a dark time. But the light within his heart motivated Blake to make a change that lead to marrying the love of his life, that lead to having his precious daughter, that lead to a visiting a cowboy church, that lead to Jesus and that changed everything. The Square One Records artist has recently completed the first two years of Bible college with his sights set on the four year completion. Blake Helms wants to share the gospel from the pulpit of a Cowboy Church. "I changed my life completely and God blessed me for it." - BLAKE HELMS

MIKE LEICHNER Preacher With A Song Ministry With Experience Mike has ministered on the 700 Club, TBN Praise the Lord, Christian cable TV, multi-state radio stations and hosted the daily radio broadcast ‘Fresh Fire’. He is a United States Marine, a strong patriot with a love for his country. This is reflected in his message and his music ministry. As we celebrate this Independence Day and our love for our country...we salute one of our favorite Patriots.. Mike Leichner! 9

There is something priceless about our history with God. He shapes us through the good and the bad as our life story is written. There is a front and a back to every book and Mike Leichner says that the story in between propels his song writing and gives purpose to the future. Mike celebrates 47 years in ministry this year but he will be quick to tell you that influence goes further back than that. As far as he can remember, his life has been surrounded by Gospel Music. His parents along with his aunts and uncles began traveling singing and ministering every weekend. The ‘Gospel Singing Ledbetters’ traveled in the family bus starting around 1958. They produced over 35 albums singing from the Smokies to California in huge outdoor gatherings to small country churches. Mike said he had the perpetual smell of diesel from those trips in his lungs! As a young teen, he played the guitar with his family and laughs when he says they allowed him to occasionally sing a song during an intermission. Most travels were in a 4 state area to allow the family to be back home in Wichita, Kansas for the Sunday evening message at the church where his grandfather Jack Ledbetter was pastor. Mike was immersed in the Gospel Music Ministry. His family shared stages with greats like the Hinsons, Rambos, Goodmans and a long list of Godly men and women. This plus the anointed preaching ministry of his grandfather gave him a Godly background. The other part of the story is his rejection of all of that. Outside influences and the pull of the world set him on a path of rebellion. Although he had a High School offer of a football scholarship to O.U. he wanted nothing to do with school, his family’s ministry or his parent’s God. Two weeks after he turned 17 he boarded a bus for San Diego Marine Recruit Depot. He had quit school and enlisted for 3 years in the Marines while our country was in the Vietnam war. He was so young that his parents had to sign guardianship over to the U.S. Marines Corp. What followed was two things. One was a deep and abiding patriotism for his country and the other was a dark and foreboding rebellious attitude. The later took him into a season of alcohol, drugs and an angry fighting spirit. He came home with an Honorable Discharge but no peace in his heart. 10

Mike’s family had been praying for him and enlisted prayer all across the nation. They even put his military picture on the back of an album with the caption ‘Please pray for our lost Marine son’. Mike and his wife Dee were married on Marine base Camp Pendleton. Within a month of being home, she was saved on the ministry bus traveling back from a concert. This was followed by a year of turmoil and the warfare that comes with a house divided against itself. Mike preaches that there is purpose in every life that will never be accomplished without Jesus. He found that purpose when he opened his heart to receive Jesus as Lord and Savior while his family was singing after his grandpa’s preaching of the very truth he had rejected! Within a few months Mike and his two brothers were traveling weekends in music ministry (The Leichner Brothers). He soon received a definite and Divine call to preach the Gospel. A short time later his ministry expanded into full-time travel. He took his wife and two small children, hooked up a 21’ travel trailer to a ’66 Chevy pickup and began traveling from church to church preaching and singing. They wore out 5 rigs going across the nation for 9 years of revivals preaching 49 weeks every year. In that path was a wake of powerful revivals, miraculous healings, salvations and the joys and accomplishments in a God-following life that so many times seem to be in the realm of impossibilities. Still there was more to come!

11

Mike and Dee founded a church in Maize, Kansas at Wichita in 1988. The Ark Church is a literal Noah’s Ark shaped building that has become a landmark in the area. He was the Lead Pastor there until 2020 when his son took the lead allowing his dad to travel more in the ministry. The church is a thriving and growing congregation that prayerfully backs him. Another chapter to the story was added in the music realm. A friend gifted Mike with sound tracks to Country Gospel songs. He’d found a new niche and the doors opened in other areas of Gospel Music. Mike and his brothers had recorded 9 Southern Gospel albums and now he added 6 Country Gospel recordings of his own. He began to write and his deep love for America resulted in several patriotic songs tying devotion to Country with devotion to God. Mike says he feels a strong mandate to pass on the knowledge of the military and its history, importance and sacrifice. It’s a worthy cause that the next generations must know about and honor.

It’s been said that you can feel Mike’s passion and it is definitely evident in his music. He has been honored to minister in multiple areas of the military. These include Marine Base Chapel, Naval Air Force Base concerts, Veteran’s Honor concerts and venues to raise funds and awareness of our fighting men and women suffering from PTSD. He wants to continually give honor to the military and ministry to those who give their lives to protect our great Country! 12

Mike says that there is no greater privilege than carrying out an assignment of God, so there is nothing so powerful as to manifest Jesus through the gift of music, of song and of the preached Word. The power of music as it reaches out through radio, recordings and internet today is vital to touch those who are limited in experience with the Lord. But a song!!! Songs and music determine the atmosphere wherever they are heard adding to their importance and influence in lives. God gives a song and He lives through us in our music, so Mike has written songs about God, Family and Country. He was asked to write a theme song for the Military Honor Flight. Dee wrote it and it is the title song on his newest recording ‘Bringing Home The Heroes’. Mike is thankful for 7 songs charting #1 in the last 7 years. That and the awards and recognitions are such a blessing but Mike receives them with a singleness of purpose to celebrate the Lord. He desires to be instrumental in reaching the lost man, taking the Gospel where it normally doesn’t go and ministering to God’s chosen, the Church of Jesus Christ. Quoting Jesus in Matthew 10:39 ‘Whoever finds their life will lose it and whoever loses their life will find it’. Then to quote Mike ‘I am so grateful that I found my life in Christ and in Him found my purpose!’ Mike and his music can be found on major social media and at mikeleichner.com.

A MUST SEE!

2022 Gospel Music Fan Award

"That's Not Just A Cross In The Ground," is a timeless song penned by award-winning songwriter Mike Owens, and recorded by award-winning NewStep Records artist Mike Leichner. The song rose to the top of numerous charts and hosts unforgettable lyrics. The riveting video produced by One-Eight Studios - Cinematic Storytelling is a must see. The lyrics come alive in every frame of the film and each note of the exceptionally well performed song. The cross in the ground marks the spot a father lost his teenage son, the cross marks the grave a mother visits her son that gave his life for our freedom and the CROSS is the place our Heavenly Father send His only begotten Son to shed his blood and bring salvation to all.

THE CONTEMPORARY FLAVORED GOSPEL

Kell Bailey Born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, Kell Bailey has been playing the keyboard since he was six years old. Kell’s talent was recognized early in his life, and at the age of 15, he was invited to play for the University of Virginia Gospel Choir. Through his adolescence Kell developed a strong passion for sports with dreams of one day playing professional football in the NFL. That dream shifted due to unforeseen challenges during his freshman year of high school and he started to pursue music in a new way with passion and hunger. At the age of 16, Kell attended his first listening party. That night after hearing the process of what it takes to create an album, from start to finish, he knew this was his future. That very night he started writing music placing each song on a hard drive to pitch to other artists. That changed after attempting the pitch path...Kell Bailey became the artist, compiling his best songs and releasing an EP in 2019 entitled “Take Your Place." This debut hit #9 on the Gospel iTunes Charts launching him onto the national stage. He continued to make waves in the industry, as his album “Freedom Is Here” reached #14 on the Gospel iTunes Charts in 2020 as an independent artist. Away from the songwriting, producing, recording, and performing you will find a Kell Bailey that enjoys spending time with his wife, Maria (pronounced Ma-ri-ah) that he describes as capable of doing anything and everything. The love and pride for her is evident in his voice, together they relax riding bikes, working out, watching football and enjoying a blessed life. Fun fact is that when Kell find himself singing in the shower... it is anything Maverick City that comes out. Bailey released his highly anticipated album "Evidence" on May 26th. The album showcases Kell's versatility as a producer, singer, and songwriter, and is a testament to his passion for the Gospel. Upon release, the album raced to #3 on the US iTunes Gospel Albums chart. The album features guest appearances from several notable artists, including Top 3 Billboard-charting Gospel artist, Chris Bender. With his unique blend of contemporary Gospel and soulful melodies, the album "Evidence" is a testament to Kell's unwavering faith, and is his way of expressing gratitude and spreading joy through his music. Bailey says, "The greatest drive in my musical journey is my belief that God placed me here on earth to help and serve others, and music is the avenue used to fulfill that purpose in this season." The past, present, and future have this impassioned artist with a contemporary gospel sound on a path to a legendary destination.

A REAL AMERICAN SUPER HERO JONATHAN YONG KIM By Rebecca Higgins

Jonathan Yong Kim was born in California in 1984 to parents who had immigrated from South Korea. Jonny, as he is known, was a quiet child with an extremely volatile father. He learned about the Navy SEALs during high school and decided that is what he wanted to do with his life. After high school graduation in 2002, he joined the Navy, trained as a hospital corpsman and then graduated from all the schools required to become a Special Warfare Operator plus more. With SEAL Team 3, he was a combat medic, sniper, and navigator. He participated in over 100 combat missions in the Middle East. Jonny earned both a Silver Star and a Bronze Star with Combat V during his time deployed. After his deployments, he decided to further his education and get his commission as an officer in the Navy. He graduated from the University of San Diego with a degree in mathematics in 2012, completing his degree in only three years. However – this was just the beginning for Jonny Kim as he went on to Harvard Medical School and became a doctor. While studying at Harvard he applied for NASA’s Astronaut Candidacy program and out of 18,300 applicants, he was one of the 12 selected. Just this past March, Jonny earned his Navy aviator wings as a helicopter pilot and so has the dual designation as both an aviator and flight surgeon. He is a military free-fall parachutist and he also has advanced qualifications in SCUBA diving. Jonny also speaks some Russian as our astronauts get language training to communicate with the Russian cosmonauts.

He holds the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He is married with three children. Jonny is now training as part of the NASA Artemis Team. Jonny Kim is a Navy SEAL, a medical doctor, and an astronaut… Yet he says, “I consider myself very average physically, mentally it’s just that I feel that I can stick with the goals and have deferred gratification to help support me for my goals ….working hard is all I know I can do to make up for any advantages natural or otherwise that I don’t have.” He also believes in humility and that you should never believe you are too good for a job. He worked during his college years for the University giving out parking tickets. He was also enrolled in ROTC. Both could be considered a step down, but he did both knowing that “the moment you start to think you’re better than anyone else you have poisoned yourself; you are on the dark path.” Jonathan Yong Kim’s life sounds like a superhero story. He went from scared child to warrior and healer. Although it was the Army’s motto to “Be All That You Can Be”, he has lived it through his service to his country as Navy SEAL, through his service to others as a doctor, and now through his service to science and humanity as an Astronaut. GODLY WOMAN DANCING IN FREEDOM

It’s a foggy morning in East Tennessee. The sun begins to rise and I place the American Flag in the flag holder for the day. I am reminded of the very important reason we celebrate the 4th of July; also known as Independence Day. A song comes to mind by Martina McBride: “Let freedom ring, let the white dove sing Let the whole world know that today Is a day of reckoning Let the weak be strong, let the right be wrong Roll the stone away, let the guilty pay It’s Independence Day.”

What picture comes to mind when you hear the word “freedom”? Is it the American flag or the Statue of Liberty? Do you think of it as being able to do whatever you want to do? In our country we enjoy a lot of different types of freedom. Freedom to go to church and worship; freedom to choose what we want to be when we grow up; freedom to choose where we want to live; and freedom to choose a lot of the things that affect our daily lives. Despite what we may think, the freedoms that we enjoy are by no means free. Someone has had to pay a price for us to be able to enjoy the freedoms that we have. Freedom has two different aspects: physical freedom and spiritual freedom. Spiritual freedom goes much deeper and has much greater power than patriotism for those of us who are Christ followers. It is freedom that brought the first settlers to America. As our country grew so did our freedoms. Today, and in the many years past, we have had service men and women who have paid a high price for us to have the freedoms we enjoy in our country. 2 Corinthians 3:17 says, “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” When we choose to have a relationship with God, we accept the gift of spiritual freedom from Jesus. That sets us free from this broken world of hate, confusion, sickness, sadness, pain, & suffering. On the cross Jesus loved us right where we are.

20

That includes right here and right now in the season in which you are currently in. Even now Jesus is reaching out His hand to us like He did for Peter when He called him out of the boat during a horrible storm. He wanted to set Peter free from the shackles that Peter had put on his faith. Jesus wants to do the same for you and for me. Galatians 5:13 says, “For you were called to freedom. Do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. “ This incredible love and our response to this love is what gives us spiritual freedom. That’s the key that opens the door to the Holy and abundant life for which He has created us. Galatians 5:1 says, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by the yoke of slavery.” So many of us never leave our shackles behind. Like Peter, we bind up our faith. Some of us hang on to our shackles because it’s comfortable, it’s what we know. Others of us walk around with unlocked shackles around our ankles thinking and believing we’re still chained to them. “1 Peter 2:16 says, “Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God” One of the many benefits of being a follower of Jesus is that God has set us free from our sinful nature. He has declared us righteous through Jesus because of His very costly sacrifice. It’s time to leave those shackles behind and dance in the freedom of Christ!

ON THE ROAD READS Raised to Stay: Persevering in Ministry When You Have a Million Reasons to Walk Away Available Available July July 4, 4, 2023 2023

An honest exploration of disappointment with the Church, Raised to Stay is for anyone weary of God’s people but longing to keep their faith in God. God might seem silent right now. God’s people might seem not worth the wounds. But hold on as Natalie Runion embarks on a journey for all who are wandering, wondering, and wrestling. Together, we will move toward trusting God again, knowing that even though Christian community may fail us, the love of God never fails. When we say yes to God, we don’t say yes to church politics, ladder climbing, or burnout. We say yes to Jesus. We say yes to hope. We say yes to much that we can still embrace. Through honest words and deeply personal story, Runion challenges us to be part of a generation known for the passionate pursuit of Christ. To be remembered for loving one another, forgiving one another, and persevering with one another in our hunger for God. We aren’t quitters. We are the stayers. Pastor’s kid turned pastor, Natalie, her husband Tony and their two daughters live in Colorado Spring, CO where she is on staff as the Pastor of Women and Creative Pastor of Family Ministry at New Life Church. In her twenty years of ministry as a worship leader, songwriter and pastor, Natalie has served various organizations and ministries across the country. In 2019 after watching many of her peers walk away from the church and their faith, Natalie began Raised to Stay, a ministry for those who have wandered, wondered and wrestled with the Church and the challenges of full-time ministry. Her heart is to see a generation of leaders finish their race as they partner with a good Father who is faithful to complete the work He began in each of us.

On July 1, 1776, the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia, the following day 12 of the 13 colonies voted in favor of independence. The delegates spent two days debating and revising the language of a statement drafted by Thomas Jefferson. On July 4,1776, Congress officially adopted the Declaration of Independence, the date is celebrated as Independence Day. 28

During the summer of 1776, 56 delegates gathered at the Pennsylvania State House and pledged their “lives, their fortune and their sacred honor” in the pursuit of independence. Now known as Independence Hall, the UNESCO World Heritage Site is where the Declaration of Independence was signed, finalizing the colonies’ break with England. Eleven years later, representatives from 12 states gathered once again at the State House to shape the U.S. Constitution, finally creating one unified nation. A national treasure, Independence Hall is one of only 24 World Heritage sites in the nation. Spring (March or April) or fall (September or October) are typically the best times to visit Independence Hall and Philadelphia as the weather is generally pleasant, and crowds are fewer. Admission is by guided tour only and free! Originally the Pennsylvania State House, Independence Hall was completed in 1753. During the years surrounding the American Revolution, the events that took place inside its walls make it one of the most historically important buildings in the country. A visit gives you a chance to walk in the footsteps of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and the other founding fathers. After an introduction and overview from a park ranger, the tour makes its first stop in the Supreme Court Chamber. In the 18th century, it hosted the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. The guide provides information about the legal system of the time and how trials took place before continuing. The second room (the Assembly Room) is the most important room of the tour. This is the room where the Declaration of Independence was debated and adopted in 1776. The one piece of original furniture is Washington’s “Rising Sun” chair, which he used during the Constitutional Convention.

Independence Day and the Declaration of Independence has and continues to play a significant role in our Pop Culture. The adoption of the Declaration of Independence was dramatized in the 1969 Tony Award-winning musical " 1776,"and the 1972 film version, which follows John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson as they attempt to convince the members of the Second Continental Congress to vote for independence from the shackles of the British monarchy. The 5th Dimension recorded the opening of the Declaration on their album Portrait in the song "Declaration". It was first performed on the Ed Sullivan Show on December 7, 1969. The Declaration of Independence is a plot device in the 2004 American film National Treasure. DID YOU KNOW - National Country Music Day is observed on July 4th! The start of this day goes back to the 1950s, when the Country Music Deejay Association (CMDJA) initiated this day to honor singer and songwriter James Charles Rodgers, also known as Jimmie Rodgers "The Father of Country Music". Take a patriotic visit to all things 4th of July! Learn more at VisitPhilly.com.

Next door is Congress Hall. During the time that Philadelphia was the capital of the United States from 1790-1800, this building was the meeting place of both the House of Representative and the US Senate. Significantly, it is also the room where George Washington and John Adams were sworn in as president. The National Park Service provides a free app with information about all the National Parks. You will find information about the 28 buildings and sites that are part of the Independence National Historical Park in Old City, including the Liberty Bell, Christ Church Burial Ground, Carpenters’ Hall, and more.

Lyrical Data

Tasked with creating an infographic in a Data Visualization course, a college senior decided to challenge herself and made quite a discovery. Did you know… Dolly Parton uses the word “love” 1,985 times across her lyrics. Elvis used the word “Heart” 353 times in his recordings. Johnny Cash mentioned the “Lord” 267 times within his songs. That is but an example of the lyrical data discovered by Sami Belcher, as a senior majoring in communication and psychology at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Depicted in a poster that measures 18x24 inches with a photo of the musical artist surrounded by speech bubbles containing words, “love, heart, Lord, etc. The number of times each word is mentioned within the songs performed or written by the artist is noted with the word, the more mentions, the bigger the bubble. With a knack for design and a lifetime of music appreciation, Sami turned her project into a company, creating Halfway Down Design Co. while also graduating from college this past spring. With a goal to honor and memorialize music legends that dedicated their lives to the music industry, Belcher is giving us a way to display our favorite artist in a fun conversation starting display of art.

Power Source Magazine discovered Halfway Down at the 2nd Annual Songwriters Festival in Dunlap, Tennessee. “It’s taking the entire discography, so all the lyrics from all of their albums from start to finish, including a couple of singles that aren’t included on albums—and compiling it into one megalist,” Belcher said. A list of each artist’s included works can be found in the description of each poster. Then, she takes the most compelling findings from the resulting data and uses them to design a conversation-starting infographic.

The initial series of posters is available now on Etsy, visit the story at www.etsy.com/shop/HalfwayDownDesignCo. New artists are coming soon, you can connect and stay up to date on Instagram and TikTok (@halfwaydowndesignco)

There are not enough lyrics to describe this particular Saturday in Dunlap, Tennessee. The day started with Jeeps of all shapes and sizes rolling into Dunlap to enjoy the Sequatchie Valley Jeep Rally. At 10:00 am the Duck Race kicked off as hundreds of plastic ducks were dropped from the Coops Creek Trestle into Coops Creek to float all the way downtown to the courthouse. Then the music filled the air, everywhere throughout the downtown area songwriters were performing. All the shops of Historic Downtown Dunlap were open and vendors lined the streets. The 2nd Annual Songwriter’s Festival was the perfect finale for this spectacular day. Make plans to attend the 3rd Annual Songwriter’s Festival next summer!! The Inspirational Country Music Association has kicked off, ‘The Sound of Small Town America’ singing competition. That's right, the Christian Country world has joined the music competition phenomenon. Over the next four months, The Sound of Small Town America, will be traveling to four small towns to host their preliminary round. June 16th, was the opening day for the first round of preliminaries at the “Friday After 5”, event in Owensboro, Kentucky. 32

Alongside the Ohio River at the Atmos Amphitheatre in Smothers Park, it was a beautiful day for an outside concert and competition. Six lucky winners went home with a ticket to the finals. Next stop for The Sound of Small Town America will head south to Vicksburg, Mississippi, on August 26th. Then Saturday September 9, one state over in Louisiana, to the beautiful small town of Lake Arthur LA. The preliminary rounds wrap up on October 21st in the “picture perfect” small town of Navasota, TX. Each small town stop may seem to be just a town in the south that you possibly haven't heard of or visited. But each small town has it's own unique beauty with the ole southern style hospitality and charm that you most definitely will want to visit, kick off your shoes off and stay awhile. The Sound of Small Town America contestants will provide video submissions to the panel which will pick the best contestants to perform live during the preliminary round in their state in front of five judges that are some of the best in this industry. Each state will have five finalists that will be moving on and competing live at the Inspirational Country Music Association Awards Pre-show taking place at the Grand Ole Opry House. If you are interested in becoming a contestant or just want to attend one of these events please visit www.inspirationalcountrymusicassociation.com for more information, and ICMA hopes to see you on the road for The Sound of Small Town America.

Catching the Sound of Small Town America By Monica Walker

Smothers Park in Owensboro, Kentucky sits alongside the Ohio River, setting the perfect stage for twenty contestants to show off their God given talents in hopes to be one of the five finalists moving on to the next round. These contestants had worked hard and were ready to give all they had for judges Hunter Logan, Delnora, Barb Birgy, Todd Tilghman, and Cody McCarver. I know I would not have wanted to be in the their shoes for this was a very talented group. The city of Owensboro's ‘Friday After Five’ event has street vendors, live music throughout the park and huge playground for the kids with a waterfront backdrop to the entire area. So grab a chair, pick a spot and spend the evening relaxing with friends and family while you take in the amazing views, great music, and food. The Sound of Small Town America took place in the Atmos Amphitheatre which did not disappoint as the crowd grew, cheered, sang, and praised Jesus throughout the night. The Sound kept the park rocking with the twenty contestants performing live, some of Christian Country Greats taking the stage, which included Steve Bridgeman, Andrew Marshall, Delnora, Cody McCaver, and finaled with Todd Tighman. As the sun set on the Ohio river; excitement grew as it became time to announce the finalists from Kentucky. As I said earlier, the talent was great and I am guessing the judges agree because this first round of preliminaries ended with a tie, which resulted in six, not five finalists moving to the next round. We would like to praise all twenty contestants who took that stage, did a great job and let Jesus take it from there. Congratulations to the six finalists; Phoebe White, Sidney Cook, Clint Campbell, Cameron Thompson, Annabell Whitledge, and Savana Adams. If you would like more information on The Sound of Small Town America please visit www.InspirationalCountryMusicAssociation.com.

If you find yourself in one of the next small towns, why don't you go on over, kick back, and enjoy The Sound of Small Town America. 34

BOBBY OSBORNE Bobby Osborne was born in Depression-era eastern Kentucky. His dad taught him rudimentary chords. Bobby got a thumb pick and a Martin guitar like Lester Flatt’s and as a teenager, played wherever he could. He connected with Jimmy Martin playing with the Stanley Brothers before joining the Marines for combat duty in the Korean conflict. Wounded in Panmunjon, he returned to the front until his discharge in late 1953. In early 1956 he joined his brother, Sonny in the Wilburn Brothers which became the Osborne Brothers’ business mentors, and by 1964 Bobby and Sonny had moved to Nashville, joined the Grand Ole Opry, and signed with Decca (later MCA) records. The career hit “Rocky Top” came in 1968. Written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant, it was recorded over the objection of the Wilburn Brothers and considered at the time by the Osborne Brothers to be “just another bluegrass song.” Within 10 days it had sold 85,000 copies and it stayed in the Billboard charts for 10 weeks. On Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at the age of 91 years old, Bobby Osborne died. Osborne taught at Hazard Community and Technical College’s Kentucky School of Bluegrass and Traditional Music in Leslie County and would have begun his 16th year with the college in the fall. Bobby Osborne was a Grand Ole Opry member since 1964.

GOSPEL ALBUM DEBUT

DENNIS QUAID

On July 28, actor DENNIS QUAID will release Fallen: A Gospel Record for Sinners, a collection of a dozen songs that reflect his faith. The album features a combination of originals like “Fallen,” “Please Don’t Give Up on Me” and others that were written by Quaid, alongside gospel standards, including “Amazing Grace,” “Just As I Am,” “I’ll Fly Away” and “The Lord’s Prayer.” Dennis Quaid is best known for his sports films like “The Rookie,” and “Any Given Sunday." He’s also starred in historical dramas like “The Right Stuff,” “The Alamo,” and “Wyatt Earp” (he’s set to appear as Ronald Reagan in the biopic “Reagan” later this year). Quaid’s also building an impressive resume in music-related films that include Jerry Lee Lewis biopic “Great Balls of Fire” (for which he learned to play the piano like the rock and roll legend) and now as “Cowboy Jack” Clement in a film he’s also producing about the life of country star Charley Pride, who passed away late 2020. That initial love of music began when Quaid was gifted a guitar by his grandfather, who was first cousins with Gene Autry when he was 12. Growing up in Texas, he fell in love with the likes of Jennings & Cash. Fallen: A Gospel Record for Sinners out July 28 via Gaither Music Group..

"THINK, SPEAK, LIVE" By Shane Roark

Is it truly possible to control our emotions and perhaps even our circumstances through “thought”? It may very well be possible….. Let’s explore what the Bible tells us about that. But first, let’s look at the culture that we live in. In today's culture, we are being inundated and drowned in a sea of DRAMA and WHINING and crying. Most people (Christians included) Just LOVE to talk about their emotions and thoughts. While I am not “against” talk therapy per say, I am very against the constant everyday babbling about what everyone “thinks’. Honestly, it’s exhausting. I really don’t care what people think. It is usually negative and heart wrenching and often just stupid. However, we have been brainwashed to believe that our thoughts are all important and should be “EXPRESSED”. This concept is in DIRECT conflict with the Bible. The Bible tells us to get our thoughts under submission and to keep our mouth SHUT. But, we will get to that in a moment. Society as a whole, has been tricked into believing that we should express ourselves openly and that is the path to “HEALING”. Even myself recently, was told (by someone very close to me) that I should share my thoughts and express my feelings, “Keeping that bottled up isn’t healthy”, They said. I replied, “I do not require your opinion” they said, “I was just offering some advice” To which I replied, “it’s only ADVICE when I ask for it, until then, it is your opinion”. (But that is another article….) My point? People everywhere fully believe this GARBAGE!! It’s nearly impossible to go anywhere without multitudes of people just “Sharing” their thoughts. Why is this a problem? Thoughts have now been turned into “Words” because we need to HEAL by letting it out. Words become the powerful action and trigger that creates LIFE. When we do not have our thoughts under control, we express them and give birth to them. They become ALIVE! Some people (like myself) do believe in speaking positively. I have been trained and groomed to do that. I was taught from God's word to do that. But where do the “WORDS” come from in the first place? Thoughts.

38

Lets see what the Bible tells us: In Genesis 1, God created the Heavens and the Earth. We all know this so I will not bore you with a ton of scripture references. However, why did he do it? Obviously there was some sort of “Plan” or “Thought” behind this. Then what happened next? HE SPOKE!!!!!!! He didn’t clap his hands or snap his finger or breath it or think it into being, HE SPOKE. BOOM!!!! CREATION!!!! Next, he studied it. How do I know this? With each step in creation the Bible says “and he saw that it was good”. Which means he stepped back and observed what he had done and realized it was good or EXCELLENT. Words give birth to life. Now, I know what you are “thinking”, we are not God. I understand that we are created in his image though. And what of our “Thoughts”? How does being created in the image of God have anything to do with how we think"? Let's continue in the Bible: Galatians 2:20 We have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer us who live, but Christ who lives in us, the life we now live, we live in the flesh by faith and the son of God who loved us and gave himself for us. His life for our life, we are UNITED with Jesus, which means WE HAVE HIS MIND. 1 Corinthians 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the MIND OF CHRIST. Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye TRANSFORMED by the renewing of your MIND.

#THEGOSPELTRUTH 1 Corinthians 2:13-16 What things we SPEAK, not in the WORDS which man teaches, but which the Holy Ghost teaches.

We should stop the thought before it ever takes root and becomes an emotion!

2 Corinthians 10:5 We abolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of GOD, and we take CAPTIVE every THOUGHT to make it obedient to CHRIST!!!!

Why are we in this shape? SATAN! He is a liar and full of soft trickery. He has been whispering for generations about this and has turned us away from the Directives of GOD. He wants us to give birth and life to chaos. Our words that derive from our thoughts are spread world wide now.

(And here is the biggie) Philippians 4:8 Finally brethren (US ALL), whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, Whatsoever things are of GOOD REPORT (this is HUGE) If there be ANY virtue. And if there be any praise. THINK ON THESE THINGS. Well now, just a handful of scripture totally obliterates this mess of expressing our negative thinking in order to HEAL. Our thoughts should be the thoughts of CHRIST. And if we had our thinking under control then our words would bring forth action of promise and hope and joy and POWER of the Holy Spirit. But we are being told that we should express our anger and frustrations into words that allow us to HEAL and be emotionally NEUTRAL. Proverbs 21:23 Watch your tongue and keep your mouth SHUT, and you will stay out of trouble. How is it possible that the Bible is in direct conflict with every TV commercial and show? How Is it possible that every single movie has it wrong?

People believe this nonsense and it’s out of control. Everyone is “expressing” themselves. Now we have small children, who don’t even know any better, expressing their sexuality and gender. PREFERENCE!! WHAT!?!?!?!?! Satan has done this right under our nose. It started many moons ago with the phrase “just let it out and you’ll FEEL better”. How you FEEL is irrelevant! Get your thoughts under control and you will feel better. Speak only positively and you will feel better. Keep your mouth shut and you will feel better. Stop complaining and you will FEEL better. Stop doubting and you will FEEL better. Speak only GOD'S directives and you will FEEL better. You do not have to agree with me, you can look it up for yourself. God has it plain and simple in his word. Read it, believe it. THINK, SPEAK, LIVE…….

How is it possible that most self help books are that far off with the scripture? I mean, it makes sense to alleviate one's-self by getting these thoughts out in the open, Doesn’t it? NO IT DOES NOT!

This month in the magazine we are celebrating America. I believe in spite of the turmoil and division in our society we still have much to celebrate. If, like me, you were born in this country , we should thank God for the blessing of being born here. Lots of good people, many of whom are our ancestors, shed blood, sweat and tears to give us this country of freedom and privilege. Despite recent attempts by our education system, a liberal media and radical activist groups to denigrate our forefathers and dishonor our beginnings, it’s important to keep our true history alive and respected. On a recent trip to Washington, D.C., my wife and I enjoyed a tour of the city and the memorials to some of our founders. It’s inspiring to see some of the government buildings with scripture engraved on them. It’s a reminder that our forefathers gave God credit for delivering them from oppression and brought them to a new land to enjoy freedom and the pursuit of happiness. With all the division and cultural war happening in our country today, we must recognize that our country is in trouble. Politics aside, it is a spiritual battle we are engaged in. We are not fighting flesh and blood but principalities and powers in high places. Our only hope of surviving this crisis and sustaining the America you and I were born and raised in, is to turn back to God. If we don’t, our country will not survive. I believe it’s that simple. Sadly, the church is to blame for a lot of our problems. While the world around us is lost and dying, we are fussing over doctrinal issues, whether or not women should minister in church, traditional music or contemporary, the color of the carpet in the sanctuary, pre-trib, mid trib, post trib or no rapture at all! None of us have it all figured out, let’s quit wasting time arguing these things while our neighbors and friends are lost and hurting. We waste too much time on things that don’t matter that much. When we were at the Lincoln Memorial in D.C., I sat on a bench in front of the memorial. As I sat there I was thinking about the condition of our nation and wondered what Abraham Lincoln or any of the founders would think if they knew what was happening in our society today.

As I sat there, a spirit of intercession came over me and I began to pray and weep over our country as throngs of people walked by me. It was a reminder to me that our only hope now is for the body of Christ to humble themselves and pray. No matter who is elected in the next election, we are in trouble. Our moral fiber has decayed. The forces of evil have the upper hand right now and we must turn things around before it’s too late. Seeing the rainbow flag in prominence over our American flag at the White House recently was almost more than I could take! We must have national repentance! So how does this relate to Christian Country Music? It relates because if we don’t pray for our country, we’ll not be able to travel and do our music in the future, as we have in the past. We will lose what little radio play we have and the government will censure everything we write or sing. That sounds extreme but I believe it’s coming if we don’t act! I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but I can see the handwriting on the wall! One last thing, We can’t let our battle be personal against people. We can’t allow ourselves to get engaged in screaming matches on social media or on the streets. Our fight is not with people, it’s against evil forces that control people. As I’ve previously quoted from the Bible, it's the principalities and powers of this world that we fight. But be encouraged! He has overcome the world! We are overcomers! As Christian Country entertainers we come from different backgrounds and have differences of doctrines and traditions. Let’s lay all that aside and agree to just promote Jesus and the love of God as we travel and sing.

Pray and intercede. Stand in the gap. He hears us. God bless America again! Cogitate on this... 41

JOHN SCHNEIDER TALKS ABOUT IT... TO DIE FOR, WHICH SCHNEIDER DESCRIBES AS A MOVIE “ABOUT A RECLUSIVE VETERAN WHO GETS ARRESTED BECAUSE HE REFUSES TO TAKE THE AMERICAN FLAG OFF THE BACK OF HIS EL CAMINO WHEN HE’S DRIVING BY THE HIGH SCHOOL, SO HE WINDS UP ORCHESTRATING A SITUATION THROUGH WHICH HE CAN DIE FOR HIS FLAG. "IT’S NOT A LIGHT-HEARTED FILM AT ALL, BUT A PERSPECTIVE AND A STORY THAT I VERY MUCH WANT TO GET OUT THERE. I WANT TO DISPLAY SOMEBODY WHO ACTUALLY DESIRES DYING FOR HIS COUNTRY. THAT TO ME A HEROIC POSTURE THAT WE’VE NOT REALLY SEEN IN A VERY LONG TIME IN THE STUDIO SYSTEM." CONTINUES SCHNEIDER: “THE MACHINE,” WOULD NEVER GREEN LIGHT A MOVIE LIKE THIS CAUSE IT’S TOO CONTROVERSIAL AND IT’S TOO PATRIOTIC. PEOPLE DON’T TALK ABOUT SACRIFICE ANYMORE. BEING AN AMERICAN CITIZEN IS WORTH FIGHTING FOR. I SUPPOSE PEOPLE WOULD SAY IT’S A POLITICAL PLATFORM NOW, BUT I REALLY DON’T THINK SO. I THINK IT’S A COMMON SENSE PLATFORM. IT’S CERTAINLY GETTING MORE AND MORE RARE, SO WHILE WE’RE SOMETIMES GETTING BACK TO MY DUKES AND SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT ROOTS, AT THE SAME TIME, WE’RE MAKING STATEMENTS OR PUTTING STORIES OUT THERE THAT ARE DESIGNED TO MAKE PEOPLE THINK THINGS THROUGH A LITTLE BIT MORE FULLY.”

"I KNOW THE MAN" - MIKE LEICHNER Inspired by a true story and written by his wife Dee Leichner. Mike Leichner once again hits the airways with his latest release," I Know The Man," from the Bringing Home The Heroes album.

BEHIND THE MUSIC WITH DEE LEICHNER The Song "I Know The Man" has a true story behind it that inspired the lyrics. My husband Mike and I had loved and admired an Evangelist, Brother Tommy, who traveled the nation faithfully preaching for many years. We attended one of his meetings where he told the story about his mother who suffered with dementia. He related how he stood by her bed as she was ready to leave this life for her home in Heaven. He said he leaned over her and said, ‘Mama, It’s Tommy’ and there was no response. Then he said, ‘Mama, it's Tommy don’t you know me?" Still there was no response. Then he said, "Mama do you know Jesus?" He told us how she raised her hands high in the air and spoke clearly "Oh yes, I know the Man! She never saw His face, never heard His voice but she could say profoundly “I Know the Man!"
