Pierre-Auguste

Renoir

(1841-1919)

Twelve Lithographs for Ambroise Vollard Original prints by Pierre-Auguste Renoir are extremely scarce. Renoir produced his first prints around 1890. He was by then almost fifty years old and a celebrated artist. His printmaking activities came in response to requests from publishers, authors and colleagues who imagined how desirable prints by the master would be. During the following 14 years, Renoir created most of his approximately 50 published graphic works of which about half were lithographs. The French art dealer Ambroise Vollard (1867-1939) was the most important publisher of art prints and livres d’artiste in Paris around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and he commissioned almost half Renoir’s output of graphic works. In 1919 Vollard published twelve original lithographs by Renoir, although the artist had in fact produced them in 1904-05. The lithographs were printed in a limited edition of 950 copies on Vélin, after which the plates were destroyed. It is these which are offered for sale here. But even if Renoir’s print output was not impressive in terms of the number of finished pieces, they are still no less characteristic of his artistic direction and talent. All of them leave an impression of innate grace, naivety and freshness that belongs only to him.* Add an original Renoir to your collection, phone 01572 821424 * Loys Delteil, Renoir, 1923

Henri M. Petiet and the Renoir Lithographs Like Vollard, a generation earlier, Henri M. Petiet (1894 -1980) established himself as one of the most important art dealers in Paris, particularly in the field of artist’s prints. He was a man of diverse interests, writing about the early ‘golden age’ of French motor racing having personally known great pioneer racing drivers such as Georges Boillot and Jules Goux. Amongst Petiet’s other passions were tennis and music. However his main passion and area of expertise was undoubtedly that of artist’s prints and he knew and dealt in the works of many modern artists. These included Bonnard, Derain, Dufy, Laurencin, Maillol, Matisse, Picasso, Rouault, Vlaminck and Vuillard. After Vollard’s death Petiet purchased his stock of artist’s prints including the 12 Renoir lithographs offered here. The provenance of the lithographs is given enhanced authenticity in that each one bears Petiet’s dealership stamp, printed verso, in the form of the initials H.M.P. set within an oval outline. The initials standing for Henri M. Petiet.
