This rare and little known lithograph by Sutherland is not listed by either Felix Man or Roberto Tassi in their respective catalogues of the artist’s complete graphic work. In what transpired to be the last full working year of his career, 1979, Sutherland was commissioned by the wool processing company, Zegna of Trivero in Italy to paint the Ram’s Head gouache after which lithographs were to be produced. These were to be subsequently awarded annually as the Ermenegildo Zegna Unprotected Trophy open to Australian and New Zealand wool growers for the best fleeces of Superfine Merino ewes. The Zegna commission is not so surprising as it might first appear as Sutherland’s work was highly regarded in Italy by the 1960s, for example in 1965 he was granted a major

retrospective exhibition in Turin. He also had several influential Italian promoters such as Giorgio Soavi, Franco Russoli, Roberto Tassi, Francesco Arcangeli and Pier Paolo Ruggerini who had connections with both the art world and commerce.

Sutherland clearly based his Zegna trophy design upon his own earlier lithograph Ram’s Head (full face) which was part of his suite of illustrations entitled Bestiary & some Correspondences (1968). The eleven lithographs offered here appear to be preliminary states or proof pulls as Sutherland worked through his design ideas towards the final lithograph.

The original gouache is now in the collection of the National Museum of Australia.
