‘My eyes were made to erase all that is ugly…’

Born to a large family in the port of le havre (1877), raoul dufy was an artist of style, drawn to depict the lavish lives of the French aristocracy and the luxurious pursuits he had longed for in a middleclass childhood. his use of brilliant colour and light, playful subject matter meant that he quickly became one of the most popular and influential painters and printmakers of the 20th century.

Forced to start earning his living at just 14 years old, the young dufy attended evening classes alongside contemporary georges Braque, eventually attaining a grant to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in paris. though regularly painting in the early 20th century, his eye for design soon saw him establish a fabric factory which made use of his own motifs, and countless

illustrations for newspapers, journals and high-end magazines followed shortly after. this experience as a designer would prove to be hugely beneficial to dufy’s development as a print-maker and through consummate skill across various print media, combined with the carefree imagery of yachts, beach-goers and days at the races, his work was soon in high demand.

Underpinning dufy’s success as a printmaker was a supreme draughtsmanship: characterised by swift, assured strokes, the confidence of his drawings translated into prints of effortless style. this collection of sketches, lithographs and wood engravings represents the height of that confidence, produced towards the end of his life in 1953 and published posthumously.
