SONIA DELAUNAY

hand-coloured pochoir goldmark

‘We are only at the

beginning of the study

of these new colour

relationships, still full of

mysteries to unravel,

which are at the base

of a modern vision.

There is no going back to the past.’

Sonia Delaunay, The Influence of Painting on the Art of Clothing, lecture at the Sorbonne, 1927

SONIA DELAUNAY hand-coloured pochoir Sonia Delaunay was born in 1885 into a poor Jewish family in the Ukrainian village of Gradizhske and adopted by her wealthy aunt and uncle in Saint Petersburg at an early age. There she had a privileged upbringing and was introduced to the art museums and galleries around Europe, before taking up studies at the Académie de la Palette in Paris. Her early work as a painter was influenced by the vibrant colours of the Post-Impressionists and the Fauves, yet it was not until her marriage to the artist Robert Delaunay in 1910 and their subsequent founding of Orphism that she became one of the central figures in the 20th century avant-garde movement.

The term Orphism derives from the legendary Greek musician Orpheus and was coined by the poet and art critic Apollinaire as a way of highlighting the harmonious qualities of colour sought by its founders. The sense of movement and rhythm created by certain simultaneous contrasts of colour became Sonia Delaunay’s principal concern, not just on the canvas but through textiles, clothes, interior design and accessories – all of which allowed her to explore her aesthetic theories while fusing modernist art and daily life in an unprecedented way.

These 20 pochoir plates are hand-coloured through stencils, published c1925. Each print bears a date centred below the image and Delaunay’s signature in facsimile. Paper size is 38 x 56 cm. This suite is also in the collections of the V&A, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum.

Such is the quality of these works that you would be forgiven for thinking that you had purchased an original Delaunay gouache.

The pochoir process involves the hand colouring of prints with watercolour or gouache pigments through the medium of stencils.

After the analysis of the colour tones and densities of an image, a craftsman known as a dĂŠcoupeur would cut stencils which would then be passed on to the coloristes. The coloristes applied the pigments by hand, using a variety of different brushes and methods of paint application to create the finished pochoir print. This slow and expensive process is characterized by crisp lines and brilliant colours and results in unique prints which remain vivid in both a tactile and visual sense.
