DAVID JONES

1895-1974

David Jones was one of the most outstanding poets, engravers and painters of his day. Rightly compared to Blake, Jones was essentially an artist, whose every thought turned to art.

Jones never would marry, his absorption in his work making such a relationship near impossible, but he maintained a circle of friends who were devoted to him, including Douglas Cleverdon and Robert Gibbings, owner of the Golden Cockerel Press.

He was born in 1895 in south London.

His father, a printer, had moved there from North Wales and in Jones’ later life and art, his Welsh heritage exerted a strong influence. He studied at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts and from there he enlisted as a private in the Royal Welch Fusiliers spending the next 3 years fighting in the trenches on the Western Front. This led to the writing of In Parenthesis, acclaimed by T.S. Eliot as a masterpiece.

Jones had an intensity that perhaps underlies the brilliance of his work and which may have also contributed to his several breakdowns, but it is that intensity that made him one of the foremost engravers of his generation.

He was created CBE in 1955 and continued to make art until his death in 1974. Jones’ work is held in major public and private collections worldwide.

After the war he converted to Catholicism and went to work under Eric Gill, first at Ditchling and then at Capel-y-ffin. For a time Jones was engaged to one of Gill's daughters but she called off the engagement.

The engravings offered here were printed in 1981 from the original blocks and plates. Original dates are shown in brackets. The wood engravings are from an edition of 440 and the copper engravings are from an edition of 180.
