CÉZANNE Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) is now considered one of the greatest painters in the history of art and the father of early 20th century art movements.
Although a prolific artist, Cézanne, like many of his generation, produced very few prints during his lifetime – a mere 9 compared to over 900 oils and 400 watercolours.
Prints of Cézanne’s work are thus remarkably scarce and repeatedly sought after.
Of particular importance to Cézanne was the use of colour in his work. In each of the prints offered here, Jacomet has taken ultimate care in reproducing the luminescent depth of Cézanne’s originals, a vibrancy made possible by the
use of the pochoir method in which colour is painstakingly applied to each print by hand.
Championed by later artists such as Picasso and Matisse as the turning point in 19th century art, Cézanne’s work has stood the test of time and continues to move even today.
Published in 1971 in an edition of 250 portfolios, these 15 pochoir facsimiles were produced after the collection of Cézanne’s watercolours held in the Louvre. They were printed by Daniel Jacomet, a master printmaker and the originator of the modern pochoir process.
