PIERRE BONNARD

B

orn in the Paris suburb of Fontenay-aux-Roses, Bonnard was the son of a civil servant employed in the Ministry of War. After a short period of study at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris he enrolled firstly at the Académie Julian and then at the École des Beaux-Arts. During this period he met other young artists including Edouard Vuillard, Ker-Xavier Roussel, Maurice Denis and Paul Serusier and subsequently, in 1889, they founded a group called the Nabis (the Hebrew word for prophets). The Nabis never really had a unified group style but most of them did derive inspiration from Japanese prints and,

following the example of Gauguin, developed a simplified drawing technique and use of flat patches of colour with bold outlines. Bonnard developed into an adventurous and influential graphic artist producing his first lithographic poster, FranceChampagne, in 1891. This work so impressed Toulouse-Lautrec that he made his own first poster later that year. In total Bonnard created some 129 graphic works in a career lasting well over fifty years and his diverse output included prints, posters, sheet music and book illustrations.

ne of the major projects in Bonnard’s career as a printmaker was undoubtedly this suite of illustrations commissioned by the noted art dealer Ambroise Vollard. The work engaged Bonnard for ten years until it was issued in 1930, at which time it attracted much critical acclaim and even three years after publication the critic Waldemar George

was prompted to write, the drawings he did … restore to us, in a pleasant form and stripped of all vain solemnity, a world which moulded our sensitivity. The 20th century painter thus rejoins the anonymous sculptors of GalloRoman steles [upright sculptured or inscribed stones], those first craftsmen with a national artistic vision.
