John Piper was approached by John Betjeman in 1953 to design glass for the Chapel of Oundle School. The commission, Piper’s first ever for stained glass, came from Major L.M.E. Dent, a friend of Betjeman and a trustee of the Sanderson Memorial Fund administered by the Grocers’ Company, who paid for the commission. Piper declared the project ‘an exciting possibility!’ and prepared preliminary sketches for the glass maker, Patrick Reyntiens. Piper then made gouache paintings of nine figures, different aspects of Christ, which the windows would represent. These paintings were displayed, rather secretly, in the cellars of the Grocers’ Hall and only shown to a select few. The gouache painting offered here depicts The Way, The Truth, The Life; three of these nine figures. The Oundle windows, demonstrating a new and vital approach to stained glass, were completed in 1956. Betjeman described them as ‘awe-inspiring, reverent and magnificent’ and declared that Oundle School Chapel deserved to become a place of pilgrimage.

John Piper John Piper was commissioned to decorate the exterior of the conference room wing of the 1950s North Thames Gas Board offices (later British Gas) in London. He produced 76 metres of fibreglass mural panels (each much larger than this study), providing a truly distinguished example of ‘public art’. In 1997 the building was converted into loftstyle apartments. The panels were retained and the building was re-named The Piper Building.

This etching is from Hockney’s small, selfpublished series called Dog Wall, in which he pictured his two dogs, Stanley and Boodgie, resting while he worked in his studio. The etching is signed and dated in pencil by Hockney and is also inscribed with the letters B a T, short for Bon à Tirer, literally meaning good to pull. It is from the collection of Maurice Payne who was Hockney’s printer. Payne used this particular print as the quality benchmark for the remainder of the series.

Salvador Dali

As a leading Surrealist Dali was clearly attracted by the elements of fantasy, satire, subversion, eroticism and dreamlike material contained in Rabelais’ text for Pantagruel because of their similarity to basic Surrealist ideas. Some of Dali’s Pantagruel images were also influenced by the work of the Swiss painter and printmaker Urs Graf (1485c.1529), for example the latter’s Soldier with a Lance (1514) and Two Prostitutes Beating a Monk (1521). Graf’s work was often macabre and he depicted a wide range of social, erotic, military and criminal subject matter which Dali found appealing.
