Welcome To Thoroughbred Country

While traveling through Thoroughbred Country, you may find a love for the arts, a sense of adventure, peace with nature and a new appreciation for all things equine. Sometimes referred to as “Undiscovered South Carolina,” Thoroughbred Country includes Aiken, Allendale, Bamberg and Barnwell counties. Explore each and discover rolling countrysides, diverse culinary experiences, history from every era, Mennonite culture, folk art and antique shops in charming small towns. We’re way more than horses!

Aiken County is known as an equestrian epicenter for its world-renowned horse facilities which play host to a variety of disciplines and an exciting year-round calendar of events. Tour the Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame located in Hopelands Gardens, learn about national champions who trained in Aiken and view trophies from America’s best known racehorses and their riders.

Among the esteemed horses and live oaks, Aiken County thrives on its rich history. The historic towns of Aiken, Beech Island, North Augusta and Wagener represent every time in history. Travel through time with historic sites from Redcliffe Plantation State Historic Site and the Aiken County Historical Museum to the Monetta Drive-In and Savannah River Site Museum.

Enjoy nature through unique experiences and activities like hiking Hitchcock Woods, one of the largest urban forests in the United States. Or bike through Silver Bluff Audubon Center, where more than 200 species, including the federally threatened Wood Stork and Bald Eagle, can be seen. Visit Eudora Wildlife Safari Park and interact with more than 300 exotic animals, including giraffes, lemurs, kangaroos and wildebeests.

Discover Aiken County’s eclectic art scene at the Arts & Heritage Center of North Augusta, Aiken Center for the Arts or The Etherredge Center.

Although Allendale County is the youngest county in SC, some of our state’s earliest artifacts are on display here. The Topper Site archaeological exhibit at USC Salkehatchie contains relics dating back over 13,000 years. Take in the local artwork in Allendale. From murals to statues, the Allendale Rural Arts Team continues to enhance the town-scape. If you’re lucky, you might catch a show at The Carolina Theatre. This renovated, 1920’s Art Deco theatre is a hidden gem offering select shows. Step back into the past as you walk through custom etched glass doors into a beautiful theatre adorned with Art Deco sconces and fixtures.

Experience a variety of unique hunting options at Red Bluff Lodge, escape to King Creek Campground or fish along the Savannah River.

Bamberg County has both history and charm. Venture off the beaten path to Denmark, the city of uniques and home of late artist, Jim Harrison. Then visit Voorhees University’s museum to learn about how this historic AfricanAmerican founded school transformed over the years and inspired generations.

Love a good adventure? This county is a mecca for outdoor exploration. Paddle the cool waters of the Edisto River, the longest free-flowing blackwater river in North America. Hike a preserved Civil War battlefield at Battle of Rivers Bridge State Historic Site, where history and nature blend for a truly unique experience. Shoot sporting clays, take part in a guided hunt or enjoy miles of equestrian trails at Broxton Bridge Plantation.

Legends surround several attractions in Barnwell County. The God’s Acre Healing Springs story dates back to the 1700’s when Indigenous Americans brought wounded Revolutionary War soldiers here to rest. The unique vertical sundial in front of the Barnwell County Courthouse, is the only free-standing vertical sundial in the United States.

In the 1960’s, Mennonites began migrating to South Carolina, attracted to the climate and natural beauty of the region. Most began farming, but many set up establishments around the county. Discover Mennonite handicraft at Little Red Barn Pottery & Art Gallery, savor home cooking at Miller’s Bread Basket, have tea at Lill’s Herb Garden or stay at Wisteria Cottage.
