ON THE COVER The cover photo was taken during the 2018 Power Ranch FUNtober event. This year’s FUNtober event will be held on Wednesday, October 23 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Barn in conjunction with the Farmer’s Market. Get the little ones dressed up for a night filled with games, prizes, and a petting zoo. The costume contest begins at 6:15 PM with prizes for the best home-made costume, most creative and best overall costume. Don’t worry about dinner, food trucks and local vendors will be on-site to satisfy those cravings and have you leaving with a full belly.

NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH

September is National Preparedness Month. Take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in your homes, businesses and schools.

Think first about the basics of survival—fresh water, food, clean air and warmth, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Ready Campaign.

YOU MAY ALSO CONSIDER ADDING THESE ADDITIONAL ITEMS:

HERE ARE SOME ITEMS RECOMMENDED FOR A BASIC EMERGENCY SUPPLY KIT:

• Important family documents (insurance policies, id’s and bank account records) in a waterproof, portable container

• Water (one gallon per person per day) for at least three days

• Cash or traveler’s checks and change

• Non-perishable food (three day supply)

• Emergency reference material such as a first aid book or similar information from www.ready.gov

• Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert • Flashlight and extra batteries • First aid kit • Whistle • Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities • Can opener for food • Local maps

• Prescription medications and glasses • Infant formula and diapers • Food and extra water for your pet

• Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person • Complete change of clothing and sturdy shoes (consider additional clothing if you live in a cold-weather climate.

• Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper. In an emergency, you can use bleach to treat water by using 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water.

Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners.

CREATING STRUCTURE

With school starting again, the days get a little more stressful, time becomes more valuable, and structure plays an even bigger role in our house. At the Piercy house, we have two young kids and two working parents who must stay in sync to keep things moving.

In our kitchen we keep a central weekly calendar that identifies each person’s activities for the week and includes a to-do list. The calendar also includes the meal plan for each day! This information helps Mom and Dad stay on track, but also makes the kids aware of what is coming up in the week so they can play a role in reminding Mom and Dad when things might get missed.

We also expect our kids to play a role in daily activities.

They prepare their own lunches, pick out their outfits, and make sure their backpacks are packed for the next day each night before bed. This allows a little breathing room in the morning if timing is tight, and some play time to burn extra energy when it isn’t!

My family has the luxury of sitting down and eating dinner together most evenings. This allows us some downtime to talk about our day and reconnect.

We have found that structure is important in keeping the house running smoothly during the school year. This way there is less impulse, less stress, and more time to play and enjoy each other throughout the day!

As the temperatures slowly begin to drop, we remember why we live in Arizona and our attention turns to the variety of outdoor activities available to us – both at home and within our community.

As you are out in the beautiful Power Ranch community enjoying the parks, pools, walking paths and sports areas, please remember to always be respectful of your neighbors by picking up after yourself, your guests and your pets.

There are pet waste stations and trash receptacles placed throughout the community for your convenience. Thank you for doing your part to keep Power Ranch looking good and a great place to call home!

If you see something that you feel needs the attention of the Association, please submit a work order online at mypowerranch.com\contact us or call the Association office. Working together can only enhance your living experience and maintain high property values throughout the neighborhood.

If you are enjoying the outdoors at your own home please remember that sports equipment such as hockey goals, tether ball, scooters, bikes and such need to be stored out of public view when not in use. Basketball hoops are allowed in the front yard only, in the upright position, and must be well maintained. Trampolines (under six feet in height) are allowed in back yards and must be placed a minimum of 10 feet from any wall – this is for safety and privacy purposes. Any trampoline and its net taller than six feet must be submitted to the Design Review Committee for approval. If you have questions you can visit the website to review the Design Guidelines.

Thinking of updating or sprucing up your own property?

Now is a great time to take a critical look at the exterior paint on your home. If you feel it could use a fresh coat of paint, please take a look at all of the pre-approved color schemes for Power Ranch. You can find a comprehensive list of pre-approved color schemes online. Remember that all modifications that can be seen by the public or neighboring properties need to be reviewed by the Design Review Committee, prior to any work commencing. The Design Guidelines and the submittal form can be found on the website www.mypowerranch.com.

FALL IRRIGATION CHECKLIST

As the summer heat has faded and the much cooler Fall and Winter months are upon us, people are headed outside to once again enjoy the landscape. Now is the time to complete some irrigation chores to get ready for the cooler months.

FULL IRRIGATION CHECK – Turn each station on from the controller to be sure that it not only turns on, but it also fully turns off. A valve that seems to run or seep may need to have its diaphragm replaced. Check for sprinkler head alignment in the turf and minimize overspray. Remember, cement won’t grow no matter how much it is irrigated. Be sure that sprinklers are vertical. Heads that may have been bumped by the lawnmower over the summer could be leaning which reduces how uniformly they apply water. Clean the filter on your drip valves and flush the end of the lines. Don’t forget to change the backup battery in your controllers as well.

PLANTINGS – Now is a great time to get new shrubs and trees in the ground. Although they may not appear to grow much in the next few months, they are busy establishing roots that will sustain the plant next summer.

When placing drip emitters for new trees, it is important to establish two “rows” around the tree. The first row should be at the edge of the root ball, the second row should be at the drip line of the canopy. This second row will allow for expansion of the root system and future growth. See example at right.

TURN IT DOWN – During the cool weather in the Fall and Winter months, over-watering is an all too common problem. When the temperatures cool, many people simply forget to reduce the amount they are watering both their lawn and plants. Plants and trees, especially arid adapted varieties that are watered at the same frequency as they were in the summer, may be susceptible to root and stem rot. Summer Bermuda lawns that have not been overseeded and are now dormant, can do with much less water as well.

There are some great interactive irrigation scheduling tools available on the internet. Start by setting up an account (so you can access your information later), answer questions about your landscape, tell it what brand irrigation controller you are using, and the result will tell you how best to schedule irrigation for the controller you have. It even includes “You Tube” style tutorials on how to operate the controller you choose. Come back often to your account for the latest irrigation scheduling updates. www.etwatergnome.com

USING STRESS AS A POSITIVE FORCE IN YOUR LIFE

As ideal as it sounds, a stress-free life would be a life without change and boring indeed. Those closest to me know that I am a lover of butterflies, not just because they are unique and beautiful, but to me they symbolize change and the beauty that change can bring. One way of defining stress is simply as any change to which we have to adapt; and multiple changes in our daily lives can become frustrating. Because stress cannot be eliminated from our lives, it is useful to be aware of ways that we can use stress positively or reduce some of its negative impact on our life.

Make a personal appraisal of your stress level. Major life changes such as a move, job change or divorce are by nature stressful and can make it harder to cope with smaller stresses. Daily hassles, like the inconsiderate driver, running late to school, and the surprise work deadline, are stressors which can and do add up. The result often is a sense of limited control over our time and our personal priorities. You may already have useful techniques to help distress at the end of the day, but here are some ways that I find personally helpful.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: Regular exercise helps to reduce the negative effects of stress and balance hormones. However, a short walk during the day offers immense benefits as well. Take a 10 minute walk around the building and regroup.

PRIORITIZE: Write it down! Whether it be in your phone or paper or you ask Alexa to do it, creating a list and checking it off brings a sense of accomplishment and pride to one’s self….and the honey-do list shrinks.

BE GOOD TO YOURSELF: Sleep, proper nutrition, water and laughter are all ways to reduce stress in your life.

SHARE RESPONSIBILITIES: Create a game out of chores and use it as a way to earn a family reward. Maybe your reward is eating out for dinner or getting frozen yogurt one night as a family. Reward the children for their help (even just with words of thanks). I know my kids don’t clean everything the way I would, but at the end of the day I am grateful for their help and tell them so.

It’s okay to ask for help, be thankful, and remember……you can’t change how another person behaves, but you can change how you react to their behavior. Only you have control over your emotions.

Come peruse the weekly offerings as you sample products, mingle with neighbors, try a new cuisine or top off the night with a sweet treat! So, enjoy an opportunity to get off the couch and enjoy your community! Whether you come by foot, bike, golf cart or car, the Power Ranch Farmers Market can easily become the highlight of your Wednesday evening.

THE IMPORTANCE OF HUMAN CONNECTION

Over the past year, I have been on a mission to find local experts who can educate our residents on the tough topics, we are facing in and around our community. Topics such as stress, depression, anxiety, drug abuse by our youth, and suicide. As I attend various presentations, many of them induce fear, panic and anxiety rather than provide education, insight and most importantly, tools. Side Note: Look for educational programming in the near future.

While doing further research, I found many of the articles speak to the importance of human connection. Social support is not just for kids and teens. Many adults, while doing the best they can, are too busy to make time to connect with friends and family. Are you one of those who could really use some time to connect, laugh, and enjoy yourself? The Lifestyle program is built on the foundation of connection and building relationships. The beautiful community you call home provides an abundance of opportunities to connect with others. Here are some fun ways to relieve stress, laugh and connect in Power Ranch: Join a Power Ranch Club where you can meet people who share the same passion as you. For example: Bocce Ball, Card Players, Mom’s Club, Girl Scouts, Bunco, etc. If we do not currently have a club that matches your interest, start one!

NEW PRINCIPAL JOINS HIGLEY HIGH

Higley High School welcomed a new principal this school year. Mr. Alan Fields joined the team in July following a 22-year career in Alaska. Most recently he served as principal at Kenai Central High School in Kenai, Alaska, a post he started in 2005. He’s also worked as an assistant principal, special education teacher and treatment center counselor. In 2009, he received the Alaska High School Principal of the Year award. Fields holds a bachelor’s degree in special education and physical education, as well as a master’s degree in educational leadership.

“I am excited to join a school and community with such a great reputation for educational excellence,” he said. “I will encourage our students every day and celebrate their successes. I will make sure that they know they are valued and have a special place and role in our school and the community.”

Higley High School is an A-rated school that serves the students in Power Ranch Community. Nearly 2000 students enrolled this year.

“I look forward to working with the teachers, administrators, students, parents and community members to provide a positive learning environment in which each student will acquire the skills for success.”

BACK TO SCHOOL STRESS

We are several weeks into the new school year and the stress levels are already rising. Back to school is a stressful time not only for parents, but students as well. As the whole family makes the transition into back-to-school mode there are several things that you can do to help everyone stay calm. Routine, routine, routine; kids thrive on knowing exactly what is expected or what is going to happen next. Some of the following may help relieve some of the stressors that are creeping up on us as we start the new school year: • Establish bedtimes and stick with it as much as possible, kids need more sleep than adults.

• Pack lunches and snacks the night before to alleviate morning stress.

• Set an established place and time for homework every day.

• Story time is an exceptional way for both parent and students to decompress.

• Physical activity (Power Ranch Elementary will offer afterschool activities for students, be on the lookout for flyers and notifications).

• Minimize procrastination—as due dates approach, stress levels will rise.

• Be mindful of what you eat.

As adults we know that a healthy amount of stress is normal.

Getting school age kids to understand stress and how to combat it with healthy lifestyles is important. As adults, our job should not be to tell our kids “not to worry about it”, but to educate our kids on how to better understand stressors and its impact on our body or daily function. Please feel free to reach out to your child’s school if your child is experiencing an abnormal amount of stress, so that we can work together to ensure that student needs are taken care of. FAMILY SHARED CALENDARS

With school back in session our week nights shifted from laid back and lazy to hectic and hurried, as they have suddenly been filled by activities for everyone in the family. After years of heated debates in my household about who had to take our oldest daughter to cheer practice or a school event “because I told you weeks ago that I have something going on tonight” my husband and I finally agreed to share a digital calendar.

It has been the most effective thing to keep our busy family organized.

We have used the Cozi app for a few years and love all the features. This is a great app to use if you have different phones (i.e. an iPhone and an Android) and don’t have the convenience of sharing the same calendar (such as iCalendar). Like many other calendar systems, there are options to color code for each family member. When I add an activity a notification is immediately sent to my husband. I can also add reminders and link directions for events or appointments.

The two features that make Cozi different from most other calendar systems is the ability to create a shared grocery list and shared “to do” lists. The grocery list feature is great because my husband can be at home, realize that we are out of ketchup, and then add it directly to the app. When I go to the grocery store on Sunday I always check the app to make sure I get any items listed there. While I have not used the “to do” list feature, I could see this as being a great tool to remind children to do chores or to add on to that ever growing honey-do list!

Since implementing the shared calendar our family has thrived on the structure and the increased level of communication and awareness. While I am a fan of paper-pencil calendars you cannot beat the convenience of having a digital calendar to keep your family informed and organized.
