AVOIDING CONFLICT WITH THE NEIGHBORS

We all CAN just get along. The key? Communication. You don’t have to be friends or spend time together to achieve a peaceful coexistence, but you should try to be a good neighbor and follow these tips: SAY HELLO. At the mailbox, while walking the dog or when you see a moving van arrive, introduce yourself. Learn your neighbors’ names and regularly offer a friendly greeting.

PROVIDE A HEADS UP. If you’re planning a construction project, altering your landscaping or hosting a big party, contact your neighbors beforehand.

DO UNTO OTHERS. Treat neighbors as you would like to be treated. Be considerate about noise from vehicles, stereos, pets, etc.

KNOW YOUR DIFFERENCES. Make an effort to understand each other. Differences in age, ethnic background and years in the neighborhood can lead to different expectations or misunderstandings.

APPRECIATE THEM. If the neighbors do something you like, let them know. They’ll be pleased you noticed, and it’ll be easier to talk later if they do something you don’t like.

STAY POSITIVE. Most people don’t try to create problems. If a neighbor does something that irritates you, don’t assume it was deliberate.

TALK HONESTLY. Tolerance is important, but don’t let a real irritation go because it seems unimportant or hard to discuss. Let your neighbors know if something they do annoys.

BE RESPECTFUL. Talk directly to your neighbors if there’s a problem. Gossiping with others can damage relationships and create misunderstandings.

REMAIN CALM. If a neighbor mentions a problem they have with you, thank them for the input.

You don’t have to agree or justify any behavior. Wait for any anger to subside before responding.

LISTEN CAREFULLY. When discussing a problem, try to understand your neighbor’s position and why he or she feels that way.

TAKE YOUR TIME. Take a break to think about what you and your neighbor have discussed. Arrange to finish the conversation at another time.

It has been said that giving is better than receiving and while I am never one to turn down a gift, I do agree with the saying.

The holidays are such a great time of year for us to participate in giving and the joy that it brings. Both my Dad and I have been so grateful for all the blessings that come of doing business in our own neighborhood, Power Ranch, and wanted to do something to show our gratitude. This is why the Fall Food Drive for the House of Refuge in the name of Power Ranch is so important to our family.

This year will mark our 6 year Anniversary, and while it is a lot of work, it is one of the most gratifying things we do. Including our community in this drive allows our neighborhood the chance to participate in something impactful. It may seem like only a bag of canned goods, or a box of diapers, but these items make all the difference to a family in need. Many neighbors have thanked us for the opportunity to participate. We were even featured in the Costco magazine last December for having an impact in our community. House of Refuge has said that it is their largest food drive every year! Kudos to you Power Ranch!

My dad and I have built our Real Estate business around positive impacts within our community and giving back. We are privileged to be asked to participate and sponsor many community and school events, such as my all-time favorite event; the Power Ranch Community garage sale. During this twice-annual event, my Dad and I personally deliver donuts to registered participants.

It is truly enjoyable walking up the driveway with a box of donuts and watching the person’s face light up with a smile because of this kindness. We usually hear lots of excitement from the kids too!

During the most recent garage sale I brought my oldest daughter with me to help deliver donuts and she loved hearing the kids get so excited. Over the years many families look forward to the donut delivery and I’ve even had people come up to me and say “I remember you because you brought me donuts”! To some it’s just a box of donuts, but to me it feels like a box of good cheer!

One of the best ways to give is as a family. At any event, you will often find my husband, my stepmom and daughter volunteering their time with us as well.

So this holiday season, before getting caught up in the hustle and bustle of it all, don’t forget to take some time to give to others.

Look for ways you can serve someone else. You will never regret that decision and I guarantee you will be left feeling happier than before! Because to GIVE is truly better than to receive! *If you’re looking for ways to serve or give back this holiday season, please feel free to reach out to me directly. HOLIDAY/SEASONAL DÉCOR AND LIGHTING

We are coming upon one of the most festive times of the year and we encourage Power Ranch residents to fully embrace the spirit of the season. As you begin to get down what seems like an endless train of Rubbermaid containers that house your holiday decorations we ask that you please take a moment to review the community guidelines as they pertain to holiday décor. As the guidelines state; decorative holiday items, such as temporary lights, inflatables, displays and holiday flags are allowed in all neighborhoods within the Power Ranch community. However, such items may only be displayed 30 days prior to the actual holiday and must be removed within 14 days after the actual holiday. String

lighting must be secured to your sole property and are not to be attached or connected to your neighbor’s property. Additionally, no lighting or décor of any type may be placed in any common areas, including common walls and trees. If you are decorating your front yard with the use projection, motion lighting and/or music, please be respectful to your neighbors with regard to brightness, volume and hours of operation. If you have questions, please contact the Power Ranch Community Association at (480) 988-0960.

2019 LANDSCAPE RENOVATION PROJECTS

Power Ranch is a community of 280 Acres of common area consisting of lush green belts, soccer fields, multiple neighborhood playgrounds, trails and more. In addition to the Turf and Irrigation Management programs that keep the common areas beautiful and the Arbor management of over 14,000 trees Four Peaks Landscaping oversees various budgeted renovation projects annually. We thank you for allowing Four Peaks Landscape Management to continue being part of the Power Ranch Community. We are looking forward to a great 2020 at Power Ranch!

MOUNTAINVIEW – Renovation work completed in January focused on the entrances, the main neighborhood park, and the streetscape areas throughout. 1100 new plants consisting of Pink Oleander, La Jolla Bougainvillea, Yellow Bells, and Gold Lantana, 15 new Trees and 200 Tons of New Apache Brown Granite were installed.

RANCH HOUSE PARKWAY (ARROWHEAD NORTH TO GERMANN) Renovation work completed in February focused on the center median and both the east and west side of Ranch House Parkway. 450 new plants, 20 new Mesquite, Texas Olive, and Oak trees as well as 350 tons of new Apache Brown Granite was installed.

ARBORS – Renovation work completed in March focused primarily on the entrances and the streetscape areas throughout the neighborhood. 700 new plants consisting of Desert Ruellia, Heavenly Cloud Sage, La Jolla Bougainvillea, Yellow Bells, and Outback Sunrise were installed; in addition to 105 New Willow Acacia Trees and 200 tons of new Apache Brown Granite.

VILLAGE GARAGE PATHWAYS – Renovation work completed in April brought a close to the four-year plan of enhancements to the small areas between the homes and along the driveways. 24 garage areas were completed to allow easier access to the rear courtyard homeowner gates. Additionally, the Village received 50 New Plants and 50 tons of new granite.

Barn Arroyo Conversions Project

POSSE AND BONANZA POOLS – In April and May, prior to the renovations of the pool decking, grading and drainage changes were necessary to help keep moisture away from the concrete. This project required the removal of raised planter beds within the pool area, installation of 750 feet of new drainage, 50 tons of new granite and 50 new plants.

ORCHARDS - Renovation work completed in August focused on the entrances, the main neighborhood park, and the streetscape areas throughout. 400 new plants consisting of Outback Cassia, Heavenly Cloud Sage, La Jolla Bougainvillea, Yellow Bells, and Gold Lantana were installed; along with 75 New Willow Acacia Trees and 100 tons of new granite.

BARN ARROYO PLAY AREA / BARN AND CARRIAGE HOUSE TURF CONVERSIONS – The turf conversion renovation project was completed in September. This project included the installation of a new playground, wood chips and several new sitting areas. In addition, crews installed 90 new plants, 17 new trees, 25 tons of granite, 14 boulders and 350 feet of new curbing to the area. This has dramatically enhanced the look of the north arroyo section near Centennial Elementary.

RENOVATION PROJECTS REMAINING IN 2019 WILLOWS – The focus for this neighborhood will be toward the areas of Luiseno and Chisum beginning in October. The neighborhood approved tree per DRC Guidelines has been changed to a Pistache. Many of the sunburned sissoo trees throughout the neighborhood will be removed. Entrances and streetscape areas will see new plants consisting of Red Fairy Duster, Heavenly Cloud Sage, Outback Sunrise, Red Bird of Paradise, and Yellow Bells installed as well as over 150 new trees installed.

CALISTOGA POOL – This renovation project will consist of a similar scope of work as previously completed at the Bonanza and Calistoga Pools within the Knolls neighborhood. Planned installation of 60 new plants, 300 feet of new drainage and 25 tons of new granite.

TEACHING THE IMPORTANCE OF KINDNESS, GRATITUDE AND RESPECT TO OUR YOUTH

The holiday season is a time filled with excitement, cheerful music, joyful celebrations and family. It is also the one time of year that charities and non-profits can almost guarantee gifts of kindness from the community…but what about the rest of the year?

As I am sure many other parents do I try to instill kindness, gratitude and respect in my four children. Throughout the year my 12-year-old son will mow the lawn of our 67 year old neighbor who is a single woman and known to all the cult-a-sac kids as “Grandma”. He does this not because he is asked of it and certainly not because she isn’t capable, but because he has been raised to be a gentleman and show kindness to others.

There are many ways to show kindness and support within your neighborhood as well as within the greater community. Here are a few ways that my family and I show our support.

SUPPORTING YOUR NEIGHBORS: • Create a babysitting calendar with your neighbors.

Everyone signs up for a shift so that once a month or once a quarter each family gets a night out for dinner, errands, concert or such without having to pay a babysitter.

• Assist the elderly with yard work. Remember that most elderly are on limited incomes. This is especially great if you have teenagers. Our senior neighbors are so grateful to my children and one woman bakes cookies for the kids as a thank you.

SUPPORTING THE GREATER COMMUNITY: • Donate goods to foster care organizations. As my babies have grown and we don’t have the need for various pieces of baby furniture my children and I bring swings, clothes, highchairs, bibs, baby food, etc. to Jose’s Closet. This organization supports families that are fostering children by providing items to make family life easier.

• Create “helpful bags” for those in need. These bags have a protein/granola bar, bottle of water, crystal light packet, gum, toothbrush & paste, chapstick and a few other small items. When we see a person in need we are prepared to help. Be creative, go to the dollar store and find what makes sense to you.

• Support your local fire house. Did you know that firemen pay for their own meals? Growing up I always understood it to be something that was provided by the department, but now I understand why I always see firemen at the grocery store.

Get your kids involved and make a meal for your local station.

These men and women spend many holidays away from their loved ones to care for others. If you aren’t a cook…there is always a grocery store gift card option or you can talk to the Captain at the station and find out how many are on shift and have pizza delivered.

Remember that we give not to receive, but to be human.

Nobody is perfect and sometimes we all need a little help from others. You may never be asked, but you can always offer.

CREATING A COMMUNITY OF KINDNESS

That said, we are also facing record-breaking statistics related to anxiety, depression, and suicide. Many of us find ourselves stressed out, maxed out, and burned out by the end of each day. Unfortunately, we bring that stress home with us, to our community and our families. Over time, it affects our health, finances, personal relationships, professional interactions, and a host of other key areas of life.

The current trend in society is to simply talk about, or complain about, all the negativity in the world. Unfortunately, that does absolutely nothing to bring about change. It simply feeds the on-going stream of negative chatter around us, as well as in our own heads.

However, what if we asked ourselves, “What can I do to make a difference?” “How can I personally effect change for the better, in my home and throughout my community?”

The simple, one-word answer to these questions is kindness.

Yes, I said it. That magical, ohso-popular word, kindness. It’s all the rage these days. There are memes and quotes about kindness everywhere. It’s on t-shirts and billboards across the country. But what does that look like in real life? How can we stop talking about

kindness and start actually being kind? Let’s take this word kindness, which is most often used as a noun, and put it into action.

What if every person reading this article committed to the “Each One Reach One” philosophy? What if we perpetrated intentional acts of kindness every single day of our lives? How would it change the way we interact with ourselves and others? Do the math. Seriously. Calculate how many people you could touch with kindness if you only impacted one life per day for the rest of your life.

The numbers will astound you. They did me when I first started studying the benefits of gratitude and kindness seven years ago.

I learned quickly that gratitude is the life-sustaining root system of a rather large tree that yields overwhelming crops of kindness. That kindness can then be picked, enjoyed, and shared with everyone we meet. If we continue to share this abundant fruit, it creates a contagious desire for more.

Thus begins an endless cycle of positive interactions and lifelong relationships. When we are grateful for our lives and those in it, we can’t help but be kind to one another. It’s impossible to be angry or disgruntled at the same time we are grateful.

Think about that statement for a moment. Pause. Read it again. Let it soak in and visual what that means to you personally. Because of this startling revelation in my life many years ago, I personally committed to reach at least one person in kindness, each day, for the remainder of my days here on earth.

I speak for the entire staff, here at Power Ranch, when I say we are grateful to be part of such an amazing community. There are so many moving parts to a community of this size and of this stature. However, it’s the people that make it feel like home.

As we wrap up 2019, and reflect on the year, there are so many things to be grateful for. I am grateful for a healthy and happy year with lots of growth. Personally, I am grateful for my family, friends, and good times. On behalf of the Lifestyle team, we are grateful for our residents, community partners, and the opportunity to provide fun and engaging events to the Power Ranch Community.

We are grateful for neighbors who become friends. The Power Ranch Elementary and Centennial Elementary staff and PTO Volunteers provide amazing services to our children and families, we are thankful. We appreciate our first responders who help keep our community safe.

The Aspire business partners and our partners beyond Power Ranch that make an impact each week by volunteering, sponsoring, and giving back. My gratitude goes to the volunteers who endure the hectic morning and afternoon traffic at all of our cross walks within the community. Our class instructors who are dedicated to providing fun and healthy options for residents to enjoy, I am thankful for you. Our club leaders who step up and lead the fun group/activity they are passionate about.

The Power Ranch Board of Director, who genuinely give of their time, energy and talents to ensuring Power Ranch continues to be the best community in the East Valley. The many volunteers who serve on a committee that also help make recommendations in guiding this community forward. It is all the people, the relationships and the common value of community that create the Power Ranch culture.

Lastly, I am thankful for my team, both Lifestyle and the collective whole who are dedicated and hard working.

“IT’S BIGGER THAN WINS AND LOSSES”

With 48 seconds left and his team trailing Gilbert by 12 points, Gilbert Higley basketball coach Jerome Joseph called timeout.

He went over to the Gilbert bench and told coach Jay Caserio to put in the MacDonald twins, Isaac and Marcus.

On Thursday, seniors Isaac and Marcus MacDonald, who were diagnosed with autism at age 3, were given uniforms by Gilbert’s senior captains to suit up for the school’s last regularseason home game. The MacDonald twins, sons of Tempe Corona del Sol head boys basketball coach Neil MacDonald, have served as Gilbert’s team managers since their sophomore year.

“It was just spur of the moment,” said Joseph, whose Higley team had struggled with this year at 5-19. “I think that is what made the moment so special.”

It was a back-and-forth game between No. 1-ranked Gilbert and Higley, but it had gotten away from Higley.

“He told me to get them in the game,” Caserio said. “Respect for and all class by Coach Joseph to call a timeout at the end of a fairly close game so that Marcus and Isaac could get into the game.”

Marcus and Isaac did more than just see the court.

They each scored their first career points, as well, with Marcus’ shot coming at the buzzer. Gilbert won its 22nd consecutive game, 46-33. “It’s bigger than wins and losses,” Joseph said.

With Corona del Sol on a bye week Neil MacDonald was able to watch his sons dress, play and score.

“Friday was unbelievable. The love showed to them by their coaches, teammates and the fans was more than any of us could have imagined. It was a close game, and we didn’t expect them to get in.” said Neil.

“When Jerome Joseph called a timeout, down 12 with 48 seconds left, and walked over to the Gilbert bench, I knew what he was doing. That was one of the classiest things I have seen in quite some time.”

“We always tell people autism simplified our lives,” Neil said. “We always knew where and when we were going, as the boys always needed a schedule to follow. We learned early on to appreciate every milestone, no matter how large or small.”

HOW FULL IS YOUR BUCKET

While we work hard to prepare our students with the best academic instruction possible, we also try to take time to teach them to be active and productive members of their community, by instilling the traits of respect and kindness. We encourage students to be helpful, unselfish, compassionate and kind. We often refer to this as bucket filling. Most teachers at Power Ranch take time at the beginning of the year to read a book called How Full is Your Bucket by Tom Rath and Mary Reckmeyer. The main idea of the book is that we can either be bucket fillers or bucket dippers.

As bucket fillers, we are encouraging and positive, making others feel good. As bucket dippers, we are not always as positive or kind. This is a great visual and concrete representation for helping young students understand how they are making other people feel.

Take time daily to have conversations with your kids about being bucket fillers.

As a Power Ranch community member here are ways you can fill the buckets of students at Power Ranch Elementary.

The Power Ranch Student Council will be doing their annual canned food drive. All donations benefit Open Arms. The drive runs November 1 thru November 25. All donations can be delivered to the front office.

This holiday season we will be placing an Angel Tree in our lobby so that parents and community members can contribute to students in need. We have other organizations doing toy drives, but we are in need of clothing/shoes for some of our students. The tree will be available on November 18.

Lastly, our amazing Power Ranch PTO will be conducting the check drive.

This fundraiser is the major source of all funds that help support the great work that our teachers and students do. No more overpriced wrapping paper or cookie dough to purchase.

100% of the money goes back to Power Ranch Elementary. This year the PTO is adding incredible incentives to increase the amount raised and meet the needs of our teachers and campus.

CLOSING OUT THE YEAR WITH THANKS

We kicked off November with a BANG! We were fortunate enough to host Cory McCluskey and his Fox 10 cameraman this morning. The students were so excited and absolutely loved being on camera and showing their school spirit. Cory did an amazing job entertaining the students between live shots as well. I was very impressed with his singing abilities… who knew?!

Our goal was to showcase the National Elementary Honor Society and share what makes them a spectacular organization. The NEHS officers spoke to the student body about what the NEHS represents: Leadership, Responsibility, and Service. NEHS is a prestigious organization that recognizes the academic efforts of our students, teaches them responsibility to self and school, and encourages them to participate in acts of service to better their community.

Fourth, Fifth and Sixth grade teachers will nominate students who exemplify the NEHS pillars so they too can join in on the long lasting tradition.

I don’t know about all of you, but December becomes quite hectic with holidays, parties, relatives in town, etc. I’m adding to the madness by tackling a few major renovations at my house. I’m an avid D-I-Y-er, but even these projects are taking me out of my comfort zone and are taking F-O-RE-V-E-R! While all of our lives become a little busier with the changing season I do find solace in remembering what the holiday seasons mean here at Centennial.

This year we are continuing the tradition of our Angel Tree program. This program is supported by our school community and assists families within Centennial by providing the children gifts at Christmas time. In addition, our sixth graders tackle a service-learning opportunity by hosting the Jingle Jog. This event raiseses money by selling bracelets and candy at our fun run. The students’ are tasked with creating a holiday dinner menu. The money raised is then used to purchase food boxes for our Angel Tree families. We also work with local agencies such as Trilogy and Central Christian to provide similar supports to our families during this time.

Even though we all have a lot going on in our lives I truly appreciate the collaborative effort of the Centennial community to support one another in these projects. We all have a lot to be thankful for!
