I am very excited to spend my first holiday season at Power Ranch and participate in the exciting events taking place. You will not want to miss the annual Windmill Lighting, Holiday Bliss, and Polar Express!

The Association has hopes that its residents will have plenty of opportunities to eat, drink, and be merry this holiday season.

With that said, please find just a few reminders: • If you plan on hosting a large gathering or party, please be aware and keep the revelry and noise to a minimum. Wind the party down at a reasonable time as you would not want your celebration to interfere with your neighbors’ attempts to have visions of sugar plums dancing in their heads.

• As many people are brought together, that also means extra cars. To ensure that your guests are in compliance, please see the CC&R’s for rules on parking, as well as information on parking passes. Please keep your neighbors in mind and open the lines of communication if there will be multiple vehicles parked over a period of time.

• As you have visitors throughout the holiday season, you will want to share the many fun amenities with your guests.

Please ensure that your visitors are accompanied when using the amenities and are aware of the rules and regulations.

As the end of the year draws near and I reflect on the past several months, there have been so many exciting changes. I am truly blessed and appreciative to be a part of an amazing community. POWER RANCH COMMITTEES WORKING AS DESIGNED!

All too often we hear what is not going well within Homeowners Associations, while the good is not recognized.

I would like to share with you an example of good intentions that could have gone bad. The Knolls neighborhood within Power Ranch exercised the proper process to get a change by bringing their concerns to the Knolls Neighborhood Committee – a committee made up of their neighbors.

Three years ago, an upgrade to greenbelt areas within the Knolls was initiated, and the project was given a thumb’s up by the Knolls Committee. The intention was the absolute best – replace the areas under the mesquite trees where the Bermuda grass struggles to grow with landscape curbing and rock.

One of the areas was completed quickly, and the improvement to the aesthetic look of the area was immediate and appreciated. The other area was scheduled for late summer 2018.

In August 2018, the second renovation was set to begin and signs were placed in the greenbelt. Residents living in the immediate area were displeased with the planned change and voiced their thoughts at the Knolls committee meeting. Residents presented their case and request for the area to remain as-is, which for them is a delightful and useful play area for the families surrounding the area, and a location that is home to many neighborhood events. It had become the very definition of “community” – neighbors coming together to meet and greet, enjoy each other’s company, and sharing family events with one another.

The residents were passionate and presented a more than compelling argument to “keep the area as is!” This was a simple reversal decision by the Knolls Committee.

This is a great example of the Board of Director’s desire for committees within Power Ranch. Open and friendly discussions between neighbors and their committee to achieve the outcome that works best for everyone.

HOLIDAY DECORATING IN POWER RANCH

With “the most wonderful time of the year” quickly approaching, many festive Power Ranch homeowners are dusting off their wreaths and menorahs to show their love of all things merry. The Power Ranch Community Association loves to see the creativity that homeowners show when decking the halls.

Power Ranch welcomes the display of holiday lights, decor, and inflatables from the day after Thanksgiving through January 9. These items do not require approval, but we ask that everyone be respectful of their neighbors when it comes to very bright lights and noisy mechanics or generators. Decorations should not be placed in any common area or on common area trees, poles, or fences. Please continue to pay attention to weeds, tree startings and shrubs. It is a good idea to make sure all trees and shrubs are trimmed prior to adding lights and decorations.

When all of the presents are unwrapped and homeowners are left with large boxes and bags of torn wrapping paper, it is important to keep your bulk trash out of public view until the next scheduled bulk trash collection. With the new 5-week schedule, bulk will not be collected until January 14, 2019. You may place your bulk trash out on January 12.

The Journal of Environmental Psychology found that holiday decorations are often seen as a sign of welcome and help to bring neighborhoods together.

Friendships and close-knit neighborhoods are greatly valued in Power Ranch, so don’t hold back! Bring on your most jolly and bright!

UNDERNEATH THE MISTLETOE

Have you ever stolen a kiss underneath the mistletoe?

While mistletoe is the symbol of holiday romance, you may not know that it is also a common parasite affecting several native Arizona plants. There is a misconception that mistletoe is only associated with winter, but there are species of mistletoe that thrives in the warm, dry climate of the desert. Palo verde, mesquite, ironwood, pine, and juniper trees are susceptible to desert mistletoe infestations.

The first thing that comes to mind when mistletoe is mentioned is a pretty sprig of beautiful green, glossy leaves used for decorations and found in doorways.

Unfortunately, not all types of mistletoe resemble the festive type found over the holidays.

The desert species is a cluster of twigs nestled in the branches of trees. You have most likely seen them in palo verde and mesquite trees without even realizing it. Mistletoe is an invasive parasite that steals water and nutrients from its host plant. That, in turn, can

affect the health of the host plant weakening it, and in some cases leading to its death.

If a mistletoe infestation is present, ridding it can be difficult. It is often difficult to access the infected area of the tree as it tends to grow higher in the canopy. In most cases, removing the infected branch or branches entire at its base is the best option.

Let it Snow, Let it Snow While snow may be a longshot in the desert, precautions from the threat of frost should be taken to protect landscape. During the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, losing track of this simple task can easily occur.

Plants that are not native to the Southwest are most susceptible to frost damage. These include Bugainvillea, Lantana, winter annuals and other.

Watering plants the before an expected frost can help them stay warmer.

Dehydrated plants are at a greater risk for frost damage. Cover susceptible plants with light blankets or sheets.

Avoid heavy materials such as burlap or

heavy blankets. Thinner material is best as it will not absorb moisture that can cause excessive weight which may, in turn, damage flowers or shrubs. Plastic is not recommended for plant cover. A nursery can assist in identifying the best materials made specifically for covering plants. Drape the cover all the way to the ground in order to help trap heat radiating from the ground. Remove the cover each morning or when the temperature reaches 35 degrees.

Should plant material be affected by frost, it is recommended to prune after the threat of frost has subsided. Pruning too quickly can result in additional damage should frost occur again.

Newer, unestablished plant materials are more susceptible to permanent damage. Smaller trees, such as Ficus, should also be protected.

No matter what steps are followed in preparation for winter weather, it is important to be proactive in the protection of plant material, irrigation and watering components, and ultimately, your money.

WELCOME SALLY AND AMY! Sally D’Amour joined the Power Ranch family on September 25 as Power Ranch’s new Administrative Coordinator. Sally came to Power Ranch via Highland Shores, another CCMC community in Highland Village, Texas. New to Arizona, Sally and her husband enjoy taking day trips with Little Sammy Soul Train, their Pekingese-Poodle mix.

Their sons and grandchildren live in California, and they love the short weekend trips to visit. When you have a moment, please stop in and say “Hello!”

POWER RANCH TRIATHLON GROUP Monday, May 21st was the date we found out our Team was one of the lucky recipients of the Women For Tri Grant. Thirty-seven days later we launched a 12-week Introduction to Triathlon Training Program with the end goal of having each participant complete the Mesa Sprint Triathlon on September 29th, 2018!

Thirty-seven brave women showed-up to our launch party on Thursday, June 28th and we couldn’t be more proud and honored to say that thirty-two of these women crossed the finish line at the Mesa Sprint Triathlon!

The twelve-week training program consisted of weekly activities on Monday evenings and Thursday mornings. Monday evening activities included a tire changing/bike maintenance clinic, running form seminar, strength training classes, nutritional seminar, bike handling skills, transitions practice, and the Thursday morning workouts focused on building swim skills. Every athlete was also provided with a 12 week day by day training program to follow on their own. A private Facebook group was also created to keep the athletes informed of the weekly activities, provide a safe environment to ask questions, and to foster community.

Amy Barrett is the newest member of the CCMC team. She joins us as the new Communications Coordinator. Amy is originally from Orange County, California, and received an AA in Liberal Arts and Science from Saddleback College and a B.A. in Communications from California State Fullerton.

Amy comes to Power Ranch having worked in communications in both the medical and dental fields, as well as with Harley-Davidson.

Amy enjoys spending time with her husband and four children.

POWER RANCH GIVING

The Power Ranch Community is a community of giving and just one of the many reasons to be a proud member. The Annual Quartermania Event is a fun night of FUN(draising) which raises funds for a local charity. This year, the event benefited House of Refuge, an organization helping homeless families in crisis by providing transitional housing and supportive services.

Together, the Lifestyle team and Power Ranch Community raised $12,635.97 – exceeding this year’s goal of $11,000. These funds allowed the Power Ranch Community Association to adopt a House of Refuge home for one year. This adoption includes safe housing, utilities, monthly food boxes, community center access, financial literacy programs, comprehensive support services and more. This gives a homeless family a real fighting chance at becoming a healthy, happy and contributing family in the community.

Last month, members of the Power Ranch Board of Directors, on-site CCMC team and Community Partners presented a check to House of Refuge. A plaque recognizing the community’s contribution now hangs on one of the organization’s 88 transitional homes.

“We set a high bar for Quartermania this year, and our community came together to shatter expectations,” said Rebecca Hill, Lifestyle Director at Power Ranch. “We’re grateful to everyone who helped make this possible and excited to see how our contribution enables House of Refuge to serve those in need within our community.”

CAMERON KAY SCHOLARSHIP The Power Ranch Community Association in partnership with Higley High School has created two (2) scholarships on behalf of a Power Ranch family, The Cameron Kay Family. Power Ranch residents are encouraged to apply following the below steps if the qualifications are met.

Cameron Kay Scholarship Higley High School 2018 – 2019 School Year Cameron Kay was a junior at Higley High School and a Power Ranch resident who tragically passed in November of 2016. He was kind and enjoyed helping others. Cameron wanted to be a gunsmith or a park ranger and enjoyed outdoor activities. However, he was most passionate about fishing. On behalf of Cameron and his family, the Power Ranch Community Association, in partnership with Higley High School and many local businesses have created two (2) $500 scholarships towards a local community college and/or a trade school by way of the Keeping It Reel, Fishing FUN(draiser).

Cameron was an average student who became frustrated there were no scholarships available for him.

Therefore, the Kay family wanted to create scholarship opportunities for students who have an average grade point average(GPA).

Qualifications: • Must currently attend Higley High School • Must currently be a Junior or Senior • Must have a current GPA of 1.75 – 2.5

How to Apply: • Submit a video of why you should be considered for one of the Cameron Kay Scholarships. The video

should include your name, grade point average (GPA), and your plans and/or goals for the future. Video submittal must be made available either on YouTube or saved on a flash drive.

• Video submissions should be 90 – 180 seconds.

• A letter of recommendation from a teacher, advisor and/or family member must be submitted.

• Please include your name, email address and phone number on the above submittals.

Submittal Deadline: Final submissions are due by January 21, 2019. Applicants will be notified no later than March 22, 2019. As the holiday season approaches it brings about a sense of tradition. At Centennial we have a few traditions that we have held near and dear to our hearts for several years, some that we eagerly anticipate at the start of every school year.

The week of November 12th kicks off our annual Student Appreciation Week. During this week our teachers provide treats, handwritten notes of appreciation, provide extra recess time, and other fun activities to honor our students. One of our favorite traditions is when the entire staff welcomes the students as they arrive to school. We all go outside with posters and cheer on our students as they walk into our gates. It is their opportunity to feel like rock stars!

Another time honored tradition is our Angel Tree program. This program is supported by our school community and assists families within Centennial by providing the children gifts at Christmas time.

Our 6th graders also tackle a service-learning opportunity by hosting the Jingle Jog, which raises money by selling bracelets and candy at the fun run. The students then sort through store adds to shop for food items to create a holiday dinner menu. The money raised is then used to purchase food boxes for our Angel Tree families.

We also work with local agencies such as Trilogy and Central Christian to provide similar supports to our families during this time.

More than two dozen Higley and Williams Field High School students from Gilbert and Queen Creek took part in the 2018 SPARK App Game Jam in September, organized by the Town of Gilbert as a way to spark creativity and imagination using a medium familiar with today’s teens: video game apps.

Along with using code to create the games, students learned about the future of transportation, including technologies under development such as futuristic electric vehicles, driverless cars, and other autonomous technology.

But the heart of the two-day event for the students was creating fun gaming apps that incorporated the theme of technology. Students worked in teams to develop the games, which were judged by adults running the program.

The Dark Knights, a team from Higley High, walked away with two awards – including the Best Game Design by the judges for the advanced category.

The winning team was made up of seniors Daniel Pickering, Brady Jenkins and Dylan Franzen.

“It took lots of hours. Luckily Daniel came up with the idea and it just took a lot of putting together,” Jenkins said.

“We had the bones of the game but then we had to add the meat and make everything pretty,” said Franzen.

“We really just took the idea of invention and transportation to heart ... it was super fun, super stressful, but super fun,” Pickering said.

All three students completed three years of engineering courses at Higley High. Current engineering teacher C.J. Lane accompanied the students to the event. More information can be found at www.husd.org/cte
