WATER CONSERVATION TIPS BY RICHARD ORDUNO
Community Manager
Even though we use water every day, it’s easy to take it for granted. Just imagine how you would function without clean water. It’s everyone’s responsibility to conserve and protect water resources. The decisions and actions you make today truly affect our water resources for the future. The following suggestions will help you get in the habit of saving water in the great outdoors: • Get a rain gauge to measure rainfall. One inch of rain
per week is generally sufficient for lawns and gardens. Supplement only when rainfall is inadequate. • Use mulch around landscape plantings. Mulch will
help eliminate weeds and hold moisture in the soil. • Select hardy plants that don’t need much water.
Native plants that are well adapted to your climate and soils will survive well without supplemental watering.
PROTECT AND PRESERVE YOUR INVESTMENT BY JULIE DEMARS
Community Standards Coordinator
• Water during the cool part of the day to avoid rapid
evaporation. • Raise the mowing heights on your lawn mower. This
promotes healthier grass that can better survive dry periods. • When watering is necessary, water slowly and
thoroughly. If you notice puddles or runoff, turn water off and wait for water to soak in. Also be sure your sprinkler puts water where you need it—not on driveways or sidewalks. • Wash cars efficiently. First give the car a quick rinse,
and then turn the water off. Wash one section of the car at a time and rinse that section quickly. Turn the water off each time. Visit www.auduboninternational.org for more conservation tips.
Happy Spring Power Ranch! Now is the perfect time to give some attention to maintenance tasks that may have been neglected in the past but are necessary to protect and preserve your most substantial investment – your home! WINDOWS & SCREENS: Cleaning and maintaining your windows and screens will not only keep your home looking good but clean windows will also allow light in during cooler weather. Well-kept screens will aid in keeping the home’s interior cooler during warmer weather. Windows and screens should be kept in good repair at all times. LANDSCAPING: After a cold, rainy winter it is important to take a moment to assess the condition of your landscaping. Does the decomposed granite need refreshing? Apache Brown is the approved color for Power Ranch. Do you see weeds that need mitigating? Dead grass that needs seeding? Is your irrigation system working properly? Please take a critical look and address any issues needing repair or replacement. EXTERIOR: Spring is also a great time to assess the exterior paint and stucco on your home and make any repairs necessary. Should you choose to repaint your home this spring you can find over 100 pre-approved color schemes, the Design Guidelines, as well as the modification request form on www.mypowerranch.com. AIR FILTERS, VENTS, DUCTS: It is important to change the air filter in your home’s HVAC system at regular intervals. Dirty air filters can actually inflate your energy bill as well as aggravate allergies or breathing issues. A good rule of thumb is to check/replace air filters every 30-90 days. Additionally now is a good time to have an HVAC professional inspect and calibrate both your heating and cooling systems.

SPRINGTIME IN POWER RANCH What is one word you would think of when asked to describe springtime in the Power Ranch community? When I was approached with this question, the first word that came to mind was ‘fresh’. I am sure that others come to mind, but this was my initial thought. We have the fresh flowers in bloom, and the grass turns green. Fresh is similar to new again, starting over, or a reboot. I think of the fresh spring training schedule, where baseball lovers will get to enjoy the sunshine, listening to the crack of the bat and the cheers of the fans. Some will receive their first sunburn of the season (grab that sunscreen stat!!). Some will head to the ocean or the mountains to recharge over spring break. Many will enjoy the fresh outdoors with the smells of a BBQ and the sound of the sizzle. The community will be buzzing with dads fishing, families walking their dogs, kids playing and maybe some bikes are getting pulled out of the garage for their first ride of the season. Of course, we can’t forget one of our signature events, the Eggstra Festival will be happening as well. Homes will be going up for sale as spring tends to be real estate’s busy time. However you choose to spend your springtime, maybe try something ‘fresh’ and new. Please take some time to get out and enjoy our beautiful community.

WHAT ARE MY COMMUNITY DOCUMENTS? BY AMY BARRETT
Communications Coordinator
When you bought your home in Power Ranch, you received copies of all the community governing documents— including the rules and regulations— prior to or at closing. Sometimes these documents get lost among all the other papers you received at closing. Many homebuyers are so involved moving into their new homes and ensuring they have electricity and water, they don’t take the time to read all the fine print. As a homeowner, you have a right to these documents; and we make these documents easily accessible on our website, www.mypowerranch. com. There is no login required to access most of the information on our website so even potential buyers may review documents and homeowner responsibilities to make sure Power Ranch is the right community for their family. It’s very important to read through your governing documents. As a Power Ranch homeowner you are expected to know and comply with all rules and regulations of the community. I have created a quick “cliff notes” version identifying the topics of highest inquiry in our New Resident Welcome Packet and the Community Standards Toolkit. Both of these documents are available on the community website under Community Info > Community Documents. If you are thinking about selling, inform your agent of these documents so that any potential buyers are also aware of the amazing amenities this community has to offer. It’s our responsibility to make these documents—the bylaws and the covenants, conditions, and restrictions—available to Power Ranch homeowners. Should you need any assistance in locating documents or obtaining copies please reach out to our office. Additionally, did you know that if your tenant wants access to community information such as events, e-newsletters, classes and clubs offered they will need to be listed as a tenant on your account? You can add your tenants to the account with a simple one page document on our website titled ‘Tenant Registration Form’. This does not give your tenant access to change account information or inquire as to any financial data, it simply allows them use of the rental amenities, clubs and classes. It is the homeowner’s responsibility to inform and update the PRCA office of any tenant changes, or any updates to your contact information.

SPRING IS TIME FOR AN IRRIGATION TUNE UP! BY ANTHONY MARMINO
Area Manager | Four Peaks Landscape
Spring is just around the corner! As you plant, cutbacks should be nearly complete and the worry of frost conditions now over; it is the time to get the watering right. Taking time to prepare now will make all the difference in the appearance of your landscape as the warmer months approach. There are a few irrigation related chores that you will want to complete to ensure that your landscape is getting the water it needs. Automatic irrigation systems have become as common place as air conditioning on most valley homes. They provide a level of convenience while keeping our landscapes healthy and beautiful. Unfortunately, most homeowners tend to overwater their lawns or plant material wasting water due to lack of maintenance. Here are a few tips to keep your system running as intended: Inspect your system for leaks – Learn to identify signs of a leak while working in the yard. Water standing inside a valve box or wet areas around sprinklers heads are sure signs of a problem. Do not put them off. Small leaks can make for a costly water bill each month. Adjust the height of the sprinkler heads – Lawns may be maintained at a height that blocks the spray pattern of the sprinkler. This may cause brown spots in the turf. Raise the sprinkler head using a riser extension flush with the soil level if it is low. Be sure to allow some extra room for the turf to grow without blocking the spray. If the head does not come up far enough during operation, then it may be necessary to install a taller sprinkler. Clean the filters and flush lines– Sprinklers contain filters that keep debris from entering the sprinkler’s nozzle. If these filters become fouled, then the spray pattern will not allow optimal coverage. The filter is typically located under the nozzle on the sprinkler. Unscrew the nozzle, remove the filter and flush with water or replace if needed. Properly installed drip valves for plant material have filters as well. Unscrew and remove any built up debris. Most drip systems should also have a flush cap at the end of the line to flush out any built-up material inside the pipes. Turn your valves on one by one and check the performance of each zone. Sprinkler nozzles that may have become clogged will prevent an even distribution of water across your lawn. These nozzles may be cleaned or replaced. Example of a clogged nozzle in the photo to the right. In some cases, a small screwdriver can knock the debris from the nozzle opening. Adjust the spray patterns – Water that sprays on sidewalks, driveways, walls or into planter beds wastes water. Sprinklers can become misaligned if hit by the lawnmower, weed eater or even by children or the family pet. Turn the system on and adjust the spray patterns so they only hit the targeted area. Spray from each sprinkler should hit the adjacent sprinklers (Head to head - 100% coverage). As shown in the photo to the left. Keep in mind the affect wind can have on the coverage pattern you adjust. Early morning watering when there is little wind, temperatures are at the lowest, and humidity is highest results in the least water loss due to evaporation. It also allows time for the plant material to soak up the water and nutrients, which it will use during the day to generate energy for the landscape to grow. Learn how to adjust the automatic irrigation controller – Understanding how to adjust the run time and the frequency of irrigation based on current weather conditions is the most important factor in delivering the proper amount of water to your plant material. Seasonal adjustments are essential for good water management and plant health. A good guide to calculating the best run time for your lawn can be found at https://cals.arizona.edu/azmet/phx/lawnhome.html.

PRE-PLANNING OF SIGNATURE EVENTS BY REBECCA HILL
Manager of Lifestyle Services
Did you know that some of our events require an entire year of planning? At Power Ranch these events are known as our “Signature Events”; which are usually tied to a holiday. Any event tied to the holidays requires extra planning and advanced scheduling by our staff. Holiday events are popular with cities, communities and schools. With this high level of popularity comes high demand for vendors such as bakeries, bounce companies, face painters, etc. Our Signature Events are the most labor intensive of all the lifestyle team offers and therefore requires the whole team to be involved in some aspect. In 2020, we are looking to change things up a little. For example, we are excited to announce we are moving the Family Camp Out from October to April. The Family Camp Out happens to be one of the only signature events not tied to a holiday. We feel this date change will provide an opportunity for more families to participate, especially given the nice weather in April.
Mark your calendar for Friday, April 24 thru Saturday, April 25. If you have not previously attended camp out, families are invited to bring their tent out to the soccer fields near the Carriage House & Ranch House. Various family activities are available during the event, including a campfire at night with s’mores. Each camper will be treated to a hamburger or hot dog dinner, a snack, and a continental breakfast. Vegetarian options are available upon request. For this particular event, campers are able to request a camp site next to registered friends and neighbors and our staff does its best to accommodate all requests. Check the weekly Powerline e-newsletter for the Camp Out registration link and other exciting community events, clubs and classes. The team works many hours planning and bringing this event to life even prior to the registration process. Don’t miss out, register your family early to secure your space.

NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH BY RACHEL BROADLEY
Principal | Centennial Elementary
Being in that Spring Break state of mind is something many of us in this community are welcoming. Having two weeks off from school can bring about relaxation, family time, and adventures. While many of our teachers are going to relax at home, binge watch their favorite Netflix series, and seek out fun local opportunities, we do have some teachers who will be taking full advantage of their time off.
EXCITING UPDATES FOR POWER RANCH ELEMENTARY BY CHRIS REUTER
Principal | Power Ranch Elementary
Though it almost seems impossible to be true, spring is in the air! We are headed into the last three months of the school year, Kindergarten Registration in open for next year, and state assessments are right around the corner. Parents of 3rd through 6th graders should be on the lookout for information from your child’s teacher for exact testing dates. This January we were able to recognize Ms. Laurie Decker as our Power Ranch Teacher of the Year! Ms. Decker is one of our Kindergarten teachers and comes to school with great energy and a positive attitude every day. Her ability to get her students excited about learning and being confident with who they are as young readers and writers made her an easy selection for this award. On behalf of the Power Ranch Elementary community, thank you for all that you do and congratulations! Our student council is gearing up to host Higley’s first ever Leadership Convention. The convention, titled “Leaders in Space”, is scheduled for early May and will offer our young leaders’ the opportunity to network and learn from their peers at other schools, middle school and high school students. Additionally the students will hear from community leaders, demonstrate their school spirit, and have some fun! Our hope is that this becomes an annual event. Lastly, I’d like to provide an update on our elective program. We currently have about 530 students in grades 1-6 participating in our electives, we are currently offering 24 elective classes, spread throughout the grade levels. Some of the more unique electives include yoga, photography, baking/cooking, dance, fishing and balloon art. A couple of weeks ago, during our fishing elective at the community Ranch House Lake, one of our fourth-grade students caught a 17-inch tilapia! You may also see students with balloon animals or balloon flowers, we haven’t gone to the circus; these are just some of the students’ creations from balloon art class. Thanks to our amazing teachers and supportive PTO we are able to offer these fun and different electives to our students.
After polling the teaching staff there seems to be a popular vacation excursion: going on a cruise. Miss Johnson (3rd grade) will be taking a cruise to Mexico, while Mrs. Masa (Cross-Cat) will be cruising along the Mexican Riviera with her husband. And while the aforementioned are cruising with their families, Mrs. Bates (1st grade) and Mrs. Schneider (Literacy Specialist) will be floating around the Caribbean on a cruise ship together. Traveling with close friends can be one of the most amazing experiences, one that is certain to make everlasting memories! Joining in on the international travel kick are Miss Crouch (Speech) and Miss Story (6th). Miss Crouch was offered a once in a life opportunity to travel to Israel. While there she will be learning about the culture and exploring the ancient ruins and important religious monuments. Miss Story will be traveling to St. Thomas in hopes to find the perfect wedding venue for her upcoming nuptials! Mrs. Casamento (3rd) and Mr. Rivera (band) will both be traveling to California during Spring Break. Mrs. Casamento is known for her cross-country RV travels, and will be spending her Spring Break exploring all San Diego has to offer (beaches, Sea World, and Legoland). Mr. Rivera will be accompanying the Higley Indoor Percussion Ensemble as they go on to compete at the Winter Guard International Regional Competition in San Bernardino. We wish Mr. Rivera and the HHS Indoor Percussion Ensemble as they go on to compete in one of the most competitive competitions on the west coast. If you are looking for something local to do, you may be lucky enough to catch Mr. Brehony (computers) at one of Arizona’s amazing nature preserves. Mr. Brehony will be indulging his passion for bird watching and nature photography by exploring places like the Hassayampa River Preserve, Boyce Thompson Arboretum, and various locations along the Salt River. Coach Mac (PE) will also be taking to the outdoors over Spring Break and will be spending his time fishing at Pyramid Lake on the Paiute Reservation in Nevada. We hope that all our community members with schoolaged children enjoy their Spring Break to its fullest. Whether than means working on projects around the house, staying local, or going on out-of-state adventures; make memories with those you love.
