A LITTLE APPRECIATION

Over the past few weeks, I have had the opportunity to meet many of you. It was very humbling to see the turnout on June 7 at the welcome reception and happy hour. I am greatly looking forward to serving you all.

While working in the community management industry for a number of years, it is always refreshing to get to know and work with people with unique backgrounds. Power Ranch is very fortunate to have a diverse group of individuals volunteering on the Board of Directors and numerous committees. They dedicate countless hours working alongside the management team to guarantee the success of the community. I would like to take a few moments to acknowledge two of them: Janine Igliane serves as Secretary of the Power Ranch Community Association’s Board of Directors, as well as the Facilities Committee. Janine was recently recognized with the BREA award for the Top Producing Realtor in the Town of Gilbert. She was also named #3 in the entire East Valley. The BREA awards – standing for Best Real Estate Agent – are given to the most productive agents, based on the number of closed units and sales volume according to data pulled from the Arizona Regional Multiple Listing Service.

Gary Whelchel serves as Vice-President on the Power Ranch Community Association’s Board of Directors, as well as the Knolls and Village Ad Hoc Committees. The Arizona Interscholastic Association presented the first annual Gary L. Whelchel AIA Officiating Award at their recent Champions Awards Luncheon. This statewide award is named for Gary, who began his officiating/refereeing career in 1967 and represents diversity and gender equality, as well as the development of former high school players as officials.

This was Gary’s vanguard vision for the officiating community during his tenure as Commissioner at the AIA. On behalf of the Power Ranch Community Association, I would like to congratulate both Janine and Gary for their recent recognition.

Bringing their dedication and their dedication and professionalism to Power Ranch and using these qualities to benefit their neighbors is greatly appreciated.

POWERFUL INFORMATION – LEARNING MORE ABOUT POWER RANCH

Power Ranch is an amazing place to live. I have been an advocate and fan of Power Ranch since my family first purchased a home here in 2008. Although we had to leave, we missed the community and chose to move back again in 2013. Since that time, my knowledge about our community has grown, and becoming a board member has increased my understanding and amazement of our community. I feel fortunate to have been voted onto the board and have enjoyed serving the past few months of my first term.

We can all see the beauty of Power Ranch - the activities offered here, lush landscaping, refreshing pools and splash pad, bocce ball, and fishing lakes - but I’ve learned more about what we can’t see, and what goes on behind the scenes. For instance, the wells are a huge component of helping our community stay beautiful by providing water to the lakes and, in turn, to the landscaping. Another example is the issue of the bacteria and algae growing in our lakes. I am learning that it is not a simple fix, and the association and board are doing absolutely everything in their power to resolve the situation as effectively and as quickly as possible. The association and board bring in experts to provide vital information so we can make informed decisions together. There has been a new ad hoc committee formed for The Village. These are just a few examples of what has been transpiring these past few months.

I already loved our community, and have been proud to call it home. But now, with each meeting I attend, I feel more informed and more knowledgeable. It is a lot of information.

One may even consider it overwhelming, but the more I take it all in, the more I am in awe of how all moving parts work together to make Power Ranch fantastic. I encourage everyone to come to a meeting and see for yourselves. It is a great group of people that collectively care about the place we all call home. I hope to see you soon!

HANDLING A MONSOON MESS

Though the word monsoon is often used to refer to a single thunderstorm, it is actually the name of the large scale weather pattern. It is basically a seasonal wind shift and the precipitation produced as a result. In this part of Arizona, the period between June 15 and September 30 is considered the Monsoon season.

IF YOU LOSE A TREE OR TREE BRANCHES DURING A MONSOON STORM: Power Ranch requires that each property has one streetscape tree and at least one front yard tree. If you lose one of your required trees to a monsoon storm, please plan to replace it in a timely manner. We know that monsoon season is not the ideal time to plant a tree, so when you call the office to report your downed tree, we will place a hold on tree violations until October 1, 2018, on your account.

It is very important that you clean up your yard after a monsoon storm. While we will certainly allow some time to get your tree replanted, downed trees and branches from the storm need to be moved out of view of neighboring properties right away. Leaving them in front of your home for the next bulk trash collection is likely to result in a bulk trash violation.

If a monsoon storm has left you with more broken tree limbs and branches than you care to move to your garage or back yard, you may contact the Town of Gilbert (480-5036400) for a special bulk trash pick-up. Please note that the Town of Gilbert charges $33 for the special pick-up, and requires tree debris be less than 5’ long and 12” in diameter. After you’ve arranged your special bulk trash pick-up, please call the PRCA office to tell us the scheduled date of the pick-up.

PREPARE TREES FOR MONSOON SEASON

There are several reasons to prune your trees: health, aesthetics, or to make it grow in your desired location. It’s good for the health of the tree and removing potential hazards. Overgrown trees can be dangerous.

Improper pruning or no pruning at all can cause a variety of problems.

Trees left unpruned will be more susceptible to disease and pests. Another more immediate risk here in Arizona is monsoon damage.

Pruning can be completed with inexpensive basic tools. All you will need is a pair of bypass pruners and a pruning saw. Here are a few tips to keep your trees healthy during the hottest months of the year: • Thoroughly water trees before and after pruning to help them recover.

• If a tree is under drought stress, wait until the tree is showing signs of a full recovery before pruning to prevent unwanted stress and potential shock.

• First remove dead or crossing branches. Second, raise the canopy to the desired height, thinning to allow wind and sunlight to pass through the canopy.

• Do not lion-tail trees. Lion-tailing is where all leaf material is removed up to the tips of the branches. It adds more weight to branch tips, increasing the risk of failure in the wind.

• Do not over-prune trees; never remove more than 25-30% of the leaf mass at one time. Frequent smaller trimming is more suitable than one extremely heavy trimming.

• Do not over-elevate the canopy, which can put the tree at risk of sunburn. Sunburned trunks can lead to fatal damage to the outer bark, borer infestation, and branch dieback.

• Palms: The lowest fronds should drop to the horizontal plane, pruned to 9 and 3 o’clock. Over-pruning can cause a major weakness in the trunk.

• Allow some small ‘suckers’ to remain on trunks and limbs of newly installed trees, helping protect from sunburn and encouraging the branches to increase in thickness.

• Clean, proper cuts heal much quicker.

• When removing large limbs, perform multiple cuts on a single branch as shown below. By first removing the weight of the branch, it allows for a much cleaner final cut.

REDUCING THE INBOX CLUTTER

Phone notifications, text messages, and emails; the world is full of a constant stream of information.

Most people will say their personal email inboxes are overflowing with unread advertisements. Sometimes it seems too much to read just one more email. That is why we have reduced the number of emails we send to residents. In 2016, the Association sent out 163 emails. In 2017, it was reduced by half to 80 emails. So far in 2018, we have sent out 26. With the reduction of emails, we have seen an increase in open rates, and click-through rates proving less is more beneficial to our residents.

ANSWERING THE BURNING LIFESTYLE QUESTIONS

While many of you were enjoying summer vacation and escaping the heat, your Power Ranch Lifestyle team has been diligently planning for fun-filled events scheduled for the remainder of the year, including Quartermania, Community Camp Out, Fishing Derby, Windmill Lighting, Holiday Bliss, and Polar Express. We are steadfast in our commitment to building community by bringing you together in the neighborhood where you live. We create experiences that connect people…it’s all about relationships!

With that said, there have been questions regarding events and programming. As there are many considerations that are taken in to account when making decisions that are best for the overall community, we thought it may be helpful to provide a list of frequently asked questions.

• Why do I have to pay to attend events if I pay my association dues?

As Power Ranch serves more than 15,000 residents, the ability to provide 100% free activities and programming is not feasible.

• Why are there sponsors for events?

We strive to partner with local businesses to provide an opportunity for you to connect. This is a great chance to support local businesses. It also helps cover expenses which helps us offer a dynamic program.

• Why do I have to pay for this event if there is a sponsor?

A higher number of cancellations or “no shows” occur at free events, often after supplies have been purchased. The monetary loss can be significant. It is also our responsibility to be fiscally prudent on behalf of the Association and you, its residents.

• Why do I have to pay for my toddler to attend this event?

Events requiring fees for toddlers will have age appropriate activities.

• Why did you choose a date that conflicts with the town’s/state festivals?

While we work to coordinate with the local municipalities and schools, it is impossible to eliminate all conflicts. The annual calendar includes hundreds of classes, clubs, and events.

• In previous years, this particular event has been in the evening, why did it change?

As part of the planning process, we review previous years’ events and analyze factors that can affect the attendance and the execution of events, such as weather, temperature, timing, and scheduling conflicts.

• If the Movie in the Park is free, why should I register?

Registration assists in coordinating food trucks, trash cans, potential giveaways, as well as any necessary volunteers and staffing.

• I am interested in coordinating a club/class, or I know someone who is. What should I do?

• How can I get involved in the community?

Currently, there are 27 classes and clubs that are looking for new members.

CREATING LIFE LONG SWIMMERS

Seadogs Swim Club is partnered with the Power Ranch Community to provide a convenient swim team practice location for Power Ranch residents. The club teaches swimmers proper form and technique to ensure that the swimmers don’t end up with injuries, allowing them to swim into their adult years. We are family oriented and keep the teams small, giving every swimmer what they need to succeed.

Nothing builds a stronger bond and a sense of community than serving your country in a time of war. The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) allows veterans to continue to grow and maintain bonds with their fellow service members in the community which they live through various programs and community service. Meetings are held at the Ranch House flex space and not inclusive to veterans.

The VFW strongly believes that the youth of today are our leaders tomorrow. Each post contributes to the essay scholarship program, The Voice of Democracy, which the winner receives a $30,000 college scholarship. This year’s topic is “Why My Vote Matters.” Additionally, every year, the VFW chooses a “Scout of the Year.” The scouts must be active members and a recipient of one of the following awards Eagle Scout, Girl Scout Gold, Venture Summit or the Sea Scout Quartermaster.

Through these leadership awards, scouts submit an application to their local VFW post where they can be chosen to receive a 5,000 dollar scholarship. Applications for this are now open until October 31, 2018. The state-level winner receives an all paid trip to Washington D.C. For veterans, The Military Assistance Program (MAP) and Operation Uplink are two notable programs. The MAP provides resources for service members and their families during all phases of deployment. While serving overseas communication with family is spotty at best; Operation Uplink provides calling cards and “free call days,” to date, proving more than 10 million phone calls home.

Building and maintaining a community through helping others is therapeutic for veterans. Through being stewards of the American way of helping others, instilling leadership in our youth, and connecting families with their faraway loved ones, the VFW creates strong bonds and an even stronger community.

Being part of the community is important to us, and we appreciate the ability to share the pool with residents. As a practice, we try to use only two lanes and provide a third lane for resident lap swimmers.

Our coaching staff sits with the swimmers and families at swim meets, so the swimmers get to know the coaches and help the swimmers overcome the nervousness. Many successful swimmers in our program have received scholarships to colleges. Some of our swimmers have been with the team for over ten years, and others have become coaches for the club.

The Seadogs Swim Club has many additional programs: Infant Rescue Swim lessons beginning at six months old, Precompetitive Team starts at four-years-old, Competitive Team is for ages five and older, Masters for age 18 and older and the Mermaid Program starts at age five. We also offer private lessons.

Doors open at 6 P.M., Dinner is served at 7 P.M., and the raffle will start at 7:45 P.M. Cash bar for 21+. Ticket includes dinner, one paddle, and two raffle tickets. Additional paddles and raffle tickets will be sold online and at the door.

As we enter July, teachers are starting to set up their classrooms, new math textbooks are making their way into student desks, and parents are gearing up to send their children back to school. This time of year is always met with excitement and anticipation about what the new school year will bring.

This year are looking forward to the implementation of our newly adopted math curriculum, McGraw Hill. Returning teachers have already received training, and our district will provide on-going training throughout the year for all teachers on the new curriculum. Students will receive workbooks, hands-on manipulatives, as well as a variety of online resources to enrich their math experience.

We are also eagerly anticipating the arrival of our Cross-Categorical Program, a self-contained Special Education classroom. The program at Centennial has shifted to align the program to the feeder-school model. The program is great because it not only helps our students to grow academically, but it also teaches vital life skills such as cooking, making a phone call, and ordering food in a restaurant. To accompany the program, we have created our Junior Buddies Club, modeled after the Best Buddies Club at Higley High School. As a member of Junior Buddies, students will have an opportunity to be leaders and mentors to students in our Cross-Categorical Program.

We look forward to seeing all of our students and parents at Meet the Teacher Night on Thursday, July 19, 5:30-6: 30 pm, with our first day of school on Monday, July 23.

Within the next several weeks, we will re-open our school doors to welcome your children back to another great year of learning. Together we will create a year of excellence for our students. We are looking forward to a productive partnership with you to ensure our children can achieve their highest potential. We have many great things in store for the coming year, and we hope you will be as excited about them as we are. Power Ranch Elementary is thrilled to be rolling out the House System, inspired by The Ron Clark Academy, to our entire school.

On the first day of school, students will discover their house at our Pep Assembly, and we will be building community and a positive school culture that will focus on supporting and lifting each other up! We will reveal more details at a later time. We hope you have a fantastic summer and we look forward to seeing you on July 23. Also, if you have not already registered your incoming kindergartener, you may drop by the district office and complete paperwork. The school office will reopen on July 9.
