Our Pets Deserve Our Attention Our pets, whether they are working dogs doing service as K-9 animals, or as hunting dogs – or whether they are constant little companions in and around the house, spend time on our laps or follow us to the bathroom, need our love and attention just like anybody that lives under our roof.

It is easy to love a small kitten or puppy – even a bigger animal that joins us at a later stage of their life – as we all know a well-loved animal’s devotion is unquestionable. The good pet owner quickly builds a great relationship with their pet to establish a great human-pet understanding. Part of this understanding will always be the love and care that the owner shows toward the animal – which will then indeed be man’s truest friend, and even though this expression is used for dogs, the same is true for the cat that loves you.

To ensure that this bond is created, and developed, we have to make sure our pet gets medical care, just like our families, to ensure it remains healthy, is treated after injury or sickness and to prevent certain conditions.

Dental care, for example, is as important for the animal’s general health as it is for humans. Bad dental care leads to many problems: bad breath, collection of bacteria, rotting teeth, which further leads to other issues such as struggling to eat, for example. Thus: we should be very aware of our pet’s teeth and the best suggestions to keep them healthy in this regard. A few tips should be a good start: 

Routine – At home, start a routine that the animal gets used to and that you stick to – all to help protect their teeth for as long as possible. For example, brush your dog’s teeth to remove tartar and plaque build-up just as you would make sure your children do. Regular brushing is good for their teeth, and they will get used to it. Start when they’re young for the best results.

There are specifically formulated toothpaste for dogs that one should use.

With cats, it may be more difficult. But, make sure you inspect their mouths and give them regular dental treats which you buy at a pet shop – or get from the vet’s rooms.

Treats are great to promote dental health since it helps to naturally remove or reduce plaque and tartar on their teeth. 





Regular Dental Check-Ups with the Vet – The vet knows best what to look out for. If your animal has bad breath, you will take it to see the vet anyway; otherwise, let the vet check their teeth once a year – and more regularly for the senior ones. Oral hygiene is part of overall health for humans; it is the same for pets. At the vet’s a technician will perform this procedure and, at the same time, check for signs of decay or rot.

Also, this is a good time to establish if there is a bad tooth – or teeth – that may have to be removed to prevent further decay of other teeth in the mouth.

Dental Diet - The vet will advise whether your pet’s dental health may benefit from a specific dental diet, which may help to improve their dental health as opposed to a regular diet of dry food.

Be Aware – Always make sure you check the animal’s mouth and teeth for, among some, the following signs of decay and problems that may lead to disease if not picked up early: yellow, brown tartar, and discolored teeth; red and inflamed, or bleeding, gums; constantly pawing at the mouth to show irritation; refusing to eat. The latter is very often an indication that something very serious could be wrong. Has the animal’s mouth checked?

Dental care for pets is one area that deserves attention; of course, we need to be aware of the whole spectrum; therefore regular visits to the vet form part of our responsibility to ensure our pets get the attention they deserve.
