Who is eligible: Grade 6 students who attend school in the Powell River region.

What is it? Free admission to swimming, skating or shinny hockey - from January of the year they are in Grade 5 until August 31st of that year.

What is it? 10 child passes to swimming, skating or shinny hockey. The 10 visit pass is active from January of the year they are in Grade 6 until August 31st of that year.

What is it? A national charitable program that helps kids and youth participate in organized sport and recreation by providing a subsidy of up to $200 towards the cost of registration.

LOW INCOME RECREATION ACCESS PROGRAM EXPANDED City of Powell River Low Income Assistance Program

the home of the qualifying applicants. Families and seniors on fixed incomes make qualify.

Who is eligible? Residents who have incomes meeting the Statistics Canada Low Income Measure (LIM) guidelines.

How to get it: If you’re on social assistance, apply through the Ministry of Social Development & Economic Security & Social Innovations, fill out the form and drop it off at the Complex. Those who qualify under the LIM can bring last year’s T4 slip and confidentially meet with

a designated staff member at the Complex. Proof of residency is also required, such as a driver’s license or a power or phone bill listing a local address. The program is open to anyone living in the Powell River region, not just the City.

Age: 1 to 5 Years

Rec Skate is a four-class set of skate lessons that is intended to be a feeder program to both Minor Hockey and the Can Skate Program. It is a beginner skate lesson, helmets and skates will be made available to borrow if needed. The focus is on beginner skaters not advanced skater looking for more ice time.

Now with longer ice times!

Come for the entire hour or just part of it.

Come play on the ice with your child. A variety of activity stations will be set out weekly by the rink host. Helmet use mandatory. Skate rentals for child included in fee.

Head on down to the Recreation complex for some free popcorn, hot chocolate, caroling and festivities. Pickleball

Court Sports

Pickleball has been around since 1965. It started as a casual adaptation of badminton (whiffleball, not shuttlecock), and grew into a hugely popular sport. In fact, it is one of Powell River’s most well-attended public programs.

The International Federation of Pickleball now lists seven member countries, including Canada, India and Spain.

Not bad for a sport named after a dog (“Pickles.”)

Crocodile

3-6 years

• Swimmers enter this level when they have successfully completed Sunfish, or Preschool 3.

• Swims 5m on their front and back, performs a dolphin kick, begins using rhythmic breathing.

Kicking drills and swimming distance increase to 10 m.

• Deep water surface support for 10 seconds, recognizing when a swimmer needs help and PFD use.

• Swimmers are evaluated based on performance criteria and progress once all criteria have been successfully completed. This level tranfers to Swim Kids Level 2.

Whale

3-6 years

• Swimmers enter this level when they have successfully completed Crocodile or Preschool 4 and are still 5 years old.

• Performs a front and back swim for 10 m, further develops flutter kick and performs a distance swim of 15.

• Identifies safe swimming areas, jumps into deep water followed by 5m swim, 20 second surface support then returns to safety. Throwing assists and sitting dives.

• Swimmers are evaluated based on performance criteria and progress once all criteria have been successfully completed. This level tranfers to Swim Kids Level 3.

Lifeguard!

Bronze Medal Programs

Learn lifesaving skills that will last a lifetime. Whether for personal interest or to become a lifeguard, the Bronze Medal awards provide important water safety messages and develop proficiency in lifesaving, resuscitation and water rescue. 100% attendance is required in these programs for full certification. The Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross awards are required pre-requisites for the National Lifeguard program.

Bronze Star

This optional program helps prepare 10-12 year old skilled swimmers for success in Bronze Medallion. Candidates are taught about how to make WaterSmart® choices and learn basic lifesaving and resuscitation skills needed to be their own personal lifeguard. This program is 10 hours consisting of both dry and wet sessions and includes a 400 metre timed swim in 12 minutes or better.

Bronze Cross

Rescuers learn self-rescue techniques, defense and release methods, and tows and carries in preparation for challenging rescues involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types, including spinal injuries and circulatory emergencies. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed continuous swim of 500 metres in under 15 minutes. Includes CPR-A certification. Course is 20 hours consisting of both dry and wet sessions. Canadian Lifesaving Manual provided.

Candidates develop proficiency at performing patient assessments, managing aquatic spinal injuries, and preventing the loss of life in a variety of aquatic emergencies, while developing stroke endurance (includes a 600m timed swim) and fitness training skills.

Bronze Cross includes the CPR-C certification and is one of the prerequisite awards for all advanced lifeguarding (National Lifeguard) and leadership (Lifesaving Instructor) training programs. Bronze Cross is also worth 2 Grade 11 High School Credits.

Our comprehensive fitness assessments will broaden your understanding of your personal health and fitness goals while providing baseline measurements of your current cardio endurance, upper and lower body strength, flexibility and mobility. The assessment will provide clients with information on areas to improve upon.

Our specialized instructor will recommend appropriate fitness classes or personal training to match you to a program that will enhance your ability and maximise improvements.

Add strength Training into your life! Join other women in this beginner class to learn that strength training not only enhances muscle tone but boost metabolism, increases energy and reduces risk of injury. INCLUSION POWELL RIVER The Infant Development Program is a family centered, early intervention service that provides an opportunity for parents to work with experts to help their baby reach developmental milestones.

Supported Child Development (SCD) is designed to specifically meet the needs of children with special needs. These free school programs encourage school readiness and strong parent-child relationships through play based learning. StrongStart programs are for children not yet eligible for kindergarten and who are accompanied by a parent/caregiver. VCH Public Health Nurses • Provide services to answer questions about mother, baby, or family health and provide access to public health programs including prenatal support, after birth care of a new baby, child health clinics (immunization, developmental screening and other resources), breastfeeding support, parent and infant drop-in, telephone support and advice, capacity building parenting support and screening and referral to developmental screening.

Public Health Dietician • Partners with community agencies, city programs, daycares, preschools, and schools to help ensure that the healthier choice is the easy choice for children and youth and parents have the information they need to help their children develop a healthy relationship with food. Audiology Program • Provides newborn hearing screening, diagnosis and intervention upon birth. Service open to all babies born in BC. Hearing screening for school entry children offered at annual Kindergarten Health Fair.

Dental Program • Provides dental screening, follow up and referral at 12 months of age and school entry. Preventive public health dental services are for children 1-5 years. Tabata training is a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workout, featuring exercises you workout hard for 20 seconds then rest for 10 seconds and complete 8 rounds of each exercise.

W.O.W (workout of the week) is an instructors choice class. A variety of styles such as Tabata, circuit, cardio, and strength while utilizing a variety of methods to increase strength and endurance, like stability balls, resistance bands, free weights, and your own body weight!

We’re looking for older adults who want to be more physically active! Join our FREE Choose to Move Program and get a customized physical activity program that is based on YOUR interests, goals, ability and income. When you register in our program you will get your own friendly, trained coach who will support you along the way. By signing up for our unique program you will get: one-on-one meetings with your coach to develop an action plan that will work for you in the long term, access to group meetings and individual telephone calls to provide ongoing support. The Choose to Move program is free of charge but you need to register.

The Hearts in Motion Walking Clubs are a Heart and Stroke Foundation program designed to encourage people to participate in regular physical activity by walking. Walking is a great way to boost health and energy and it’s easily incorporated into any lifestyle. You can reduce risk factors such as stress, blood pressure, blood cholesterol, and body fat by incorporating over thirty minutes of physical activity most days of the week. This year, the City of Powell River will host it’s first annual Christmas Tree Light Up event at the Powell River Recreation Complex!

The theme is “White Christmas” and will feature lights & decorations covering the lower entrance to the Leisure Center.

The evening is also opening night of Winter Wonderland in the skating rink.

The light-up event starts at 6 pm.

At 6:15 pm, enjoy the PR photo booth,

carolling & music, and free snacks & hot chocolate.

At 6:30 pm the music and activities will take a brief pause as we light up the complex!

Then, you may take photos with Santa, look at the lovely decorations, and celebrate the holiday season with one another.
