ABOUT POUND ARTS We are a registered charity, limited by guarantee. We run The Pound, the arts hub for north Wiltshire based in Corsham, two annual Festivals, and Rural Arts Touring, which comprises the rural touring schemes for Wiltshire and South Gloucestershire.

The Pound hosts three annual seasons of professional live performances, film, participatory arts events and exhibitions.

It’s a welcoming and vibrant venue in the centre of Corsham with a 100-seat auditorium, an exhibition space, café bar, parking and baby-friendly facilities. The centre also includes rehearsal and workshop spaces, studios housing three resident visual artists and a community workshop space.

Blue Sky Festival is a joyous, warm, quirky, family festival of the arts in June.

Magic and Mayhem Festival is a contemporary arts blend of illusion, glamour, laughter, oddities and imagination in November.

Rural Arts Touring, covering Wiltshire and South Gloucestershire, is one of 40 rural touring schemes in the UK. Pound Arts works in partnership with volunteer promoters in up to 60 villages across the two unitary authority areas to stage around 70 professional performances and 20 participatory arts events every year.

Pound Arts also delivers Education & Outreach arts projects in Corsham and across Wiltshire, working to improve and sustain arts education and access to the arts for all ages.

A warm welcome from Pound Arts Welcome to our new brochure with a packed programme of live, film, exhibition and participation events. We are delighted to announce that our bid for capital funding from Arts Council England was successful. This means we will be able to make your experience better including air con in the auditorium and fixing floors throughout the building. This work is vital to the future of our beautiful Grade II listed building. A huge thank you to everyone who has supported the fund so far. Saturday 26 January, 7.30pm £14 (£12 concessions) Described by Jools Holland as one of his favourite piano players ever, Ben Waters returns to The Pound for an up-beat evening of authentic boogie, blues and rock ‘n roll. This guy has worked alongside some of the genre’s greatest legends; Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Rolling Stones, Sir Ray Davies, Shakin’ Stevens and many more.

Friday 1 February, 8pm £14 (£12 concessions) For 15 years Jim Moray has been at the forefront of a new movement in English traditional music. His debut album Sweet England changed the sound of folk song and won awards for its innovative melding of orchestration and electronica. His sixth album Upcetera heralds a new chapter for the producer and has received the best reviews of his career, including five stars from Mojo, fRoots and R2 magazines.

Lewis Clark & The Essentials Live Album Recording & Birthday Concert

Thursday 7 March, 8pm £12 (£10 concessions) Don’t miss your chance to be part of a very special, one-off event, as Pound Arts associate artist Lewis Clark records his new album LIVE in the comfort of the auditorium on his birthday. Be part of the magic and join in as The Essentials five piece ensemble provide a set to include new songs.

Friday 8 March, 7.30pm £15 (£13 concessions) Sinatra called her ‘regal’, Duke Ellington caller her ‘the queen’. Jo Harrop pays tribute to the sultriest songstress of all, Peggy Lee, with a five-piece band led by pianist Alex Webb and featuring special guest, world-renowned alto saxophonist, Tony Kofi. Harrop delivers moving renditions of Peggy Lee classics including Why Don’t You Do It Right, He’s A Tramp and The Folks Who Live On The Hill.

Friday 22 March, 7.30pm £12 (£10 concessions) Contemporary folk trio Effra are Alex Bishop (guitar, Pound Arts resident artist), Tom Newell (fiddle, mandolin) and Aidan Shepherd (accordion). Playing music from their latest album, Below Ground, captures the unseen subterranean world beneath our feet and the recording process saw the band trek to the source of London’s only fully concealed waterway (and musical namesake) the Effra river, as well as venturing within 96km worth of tunnels in Box Freestone Mine.

Saturday 30 March, 7.30pm 7.30pm, £12 (£10 concession) Singer/songwriter, harpist and musician, Jennifer Crook has released a string of finely-crafted albums and performed across the UK and Europe - including a major tour with Snow Patrol - before releasing her acclaimed album ‘Carnforth Station’ produced by Stephen W Tayler (Kate Bush, Suzanne Vega). The addition of first class musicians Mike Cosgrave (guitar, accordion), Clare Lindley (violin) and guest Stuart Bruce (electric guitar, bass) create atmospheric arrangements around Jennifer’s vivid storytelling which are simply stunning.

The Trials of Cato

Friday 5 April, 8pm £14 (£12 concessions) Hailing from North Wales and Yorkshire, The Trials of Cato returned to the UK from Beirut, Lebanon in 2016. Since then their eclectic brand of folk music – encompassing 18th century ballads all the way up to self-penned stomping dance tunes – has seen them booked out at folk clubs and festivals across the country, with 2019 looking ever busier.

Kitty McFarlane plus support Namer of Clouds

Friday 12 April, 7.30pm £12 (£10 concessions) Kitty Macfarlane is a songwriter and guitarist from Somerset, whose music is rich with visual imagery and written with an eco-eye. From the starling murmurations on the Somerset Levels to the lowly eel’s epic transatlantic migration, and the small part we ourselves play in a much bigger picture, her songs are bound by the underlying theme of mankind’s relationship with the wild.

Moore Moss Rutter

Saturday 27 April, 8pm £14 (£12 concessions) Winners of the 2011 BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award. Seven years on, they release their third album titled III. Regarded as three of the best players of traditional folk amongst a precociously gifted generation, their arrangements wield a rare potency. Featuring new and traditional compositions, this record focuses on their own movements from the countryside to large cities.

Wednesday 23 January, 1pm Bradley Johnson is a Classical Guitarist, currently studying at the Royal Academy of Music with Professor Michael Lewin.

Bradley graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music with 1st Class Honours in 2017. Recent pursuits include performances with Royal Academy Opera and for the International Guitar Research Centre celebrating Reginald Smith Brindle’s centenary.

Thibault Blanchard (cello) & Kyle Nash-Baker (piano)

Wednesday 27 February, 1pm Thibault Blanchard-Dubois, a French cellist, enjoys mixing classical and experimental-contemporary music through performances and composition.

Kyle Nash-Baker, pianist/composer and self-taught from the age of 12, began writing compositions after the colours he saw whilst playing (Synaesthesia).

Charlotte Rowan (violin) & Charlotte Stevenson (piano)

Wednesday 27 March, 1pm Praised for her “dazzling performances”, violinist Charlotte Rowan was invited to study, aged 16, at the Peabody Conservatory, USA. Upon graduating, she performs extensively as a soloist and recitalist throughout the UK with her pianist Charlotte Stevenson. Their recital at The Pound will include Vitali’s Chaconne, Sarasate’s Carmen Fantasy, Mendelssohn’s Introduction and Capriccioso, and works by Bloch, Wieniawski and Szymanowski.

A pre-show social, time to relax, work, meet up with friends, or grab a change of scenery with the little ones… All great ways to spend time in our café.

We serve fresh, vegetarian and locally sourced food, including vegan and gluten free options, Hobbs House Bread, and our homemade cakes go down really well with a smooth Bristol Twenty coffee. We also have wi-fi so you don’t have to miss any important emails.

As a fully licensed bar, we serve wines, spirits, lagers and local ales, so choose us for your pre-show refreshments. You can also pre-book your interval drinks so you can beat the queue.

We are family-friendly with food and drink options for the little ones; high chairs and baby-changing facilities are available.

Sometimes dark, sometimes cheery, but always beautiful. At the heart of it all, there lies fantastic song craft and pure feeling.

Friday 29 March, 8pm A welcome back to Ramshackle after their last appearance at The Pound which had the Café Bar jumping. RCSO is made up of string players of all ages and abilities. They play folk music both traditional and contemporary, but mostly lively including Eastern European, Klezmer and Celtic music.

2016 BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award Nominee Jack Cookson is a multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter hailing from Devon. His distinct style combines his deeply articulate lyrics with memorable melodic hooks and intricate, fingerstyle guitar arrangements, influenced by roots music from either side of the Atlantic.

Loving your children, spouse and ageing parents (in that order, please don’t tell my mother) is very hard work, very intense and a lot of the time it sucks. But who wants to live without love? The Hip Yak Poetry Shack

Friday 1 March, 8pm £5 The Hip Yak Poetry Shack, a ramshackle, interactive, comedy-poetry cabaret, is visiting Corsham during Fest West. Gather at The Pound for some of the finest, funniest, deeply moving and profoundly right-on spoken word entertainment you will hear this year – and possibly your whole lives. Luke really does care about Britain, so he’s on a mission to write poems that might be able to unite a nation divided by austerity and Brexit. Can one poet ever really represent an entire nation? The Book of Upside Down Thinking Brian Patten

Saturday 6 April, 7.30pm £14 (£12 concessions) One of the UK’s most distinctive and popular poets, Brian Patten has been writing heartbreakingly honest, funny and uplifting poems for nearly five decades. A master of performance, his readings are always memorable.

Brian revisits a number of classic favourites but the performance also combines two very different strands of his most recent poetry. Alongside excerpts from this roller-coaster ride of wit, he shares haunting, lyrical poems from an as yet unpublished manuscript of moving elegies

RECLAIMED Wassail! Theatre Company

Friday 15 February, 7.30pm £12 (£10 concessions) with post-show Q&A An immersive production from Somerset’s Wassail Theatre Company. It had been an ordinary January day. That is until an extraordinary thing happened: the water came and it didn’t go away. The community had been told to evacuate their homes and meet at the village hall. What happens when a community is in crisis? When tragedy is moments away and when your loved ones are nowhere to be seen, who do you turn to for help?

Theatre Double Bill: The Swimmer

Thursday 21 February, 7pm £10 “A mere ditch that shall be leaped” (Napoleon). Twenty-one miles (as the gull flies) to France. So near, yet so far. Flash-back to a golden age of bathing and Channel Fever grips the nation. Our foolhardy romantic emerges from her bathing hut to join the Channel swimmers. Dollops of goose fat and a glint of eccentricity. Flash-forward, will it go swimmingly or will the tide turn on her fortune? Expect one woman, witty physical theatre and an inventive use of props, all from the depths of a mobile modesty hut.

O No!

Friday 22 February, 8pm £12 (£10 concessions) A psychedelic ride, and a wonky homage to the woman damned for destroying the Beatles. O No! borrows Yoko Ono’s art instructions to ask whether falling in love is always catastrophic. Funny and surprising in equal measure this show, from a multi-award winning theatre maker, is about reckless optimism, avant-garde art and what we might yet have to learn from the hippies.

She’s A Good Boy

If Elise had £1 for every time someone has asked ‘Are you the best man?’ then Elise would have £2. Elise is often asked, ‘Are you a boy or a girl?’ The answer to this question is… No. An honest, moving and hilarious show exploring non-binary gender using Elise’s real life experiences. WOMANS (like Romans but with a ‘W’) Scratchworks Theatre Company

Saturday 23 March, 7.30pm £12 (£10 concessions) It’s 46BC, Ancient Rome. Our hero, Leta, has been declared a traitor by the Roman Senate. She is given a punishment worse than death – Damnatio Memoriae – to be erased from history. Whilst noble Gladiators and infamous Emperors around her are becoming legends, her name will be scratched out and forgotten forever. But with the help from some mischievous Muses, she decides to rebel against the Republic.

When crossing paths with her old boyfriend, a stalwart loyalist in Labour politics, she’s faced with an agonising decision.

Ralph Fiennes and Sophie Okonedo play Shakespeare’s famous fated couple in his great tragedy of politics, passion and power. Wednesday 20 February, 3pm £10 (£8 children) In the town of Faldum an unexpected visitor offers to grant a wish to anyone who wants one. Before long, mansions stand where mud huts once squatted. And one man wishes to be turned into a mountain. Written and performed by poet Toby Thompson. A bold reimagining of Herman Hesse’s classic fairytale with live music, rhyme and a smattering of philosophy.

Which one will you play with? An interactive circus theatre experience exploring why sometimes people can’t fit into boxes, even if it is the neatest place to put them.

Calne Artists: The Disciplines of Art

Saturday 12 January – Saturday 2 March New work by the Calne Artists is brought together in a vibrant exhibition celebrating the disciplines of art. As well as highlighting the diverse set of mediums used within the group, the title of the exhibition refers to the discipline required in the act of creating an artwork.

Leanne Stephens: In the Silence

Friday 8 March – Saturday 20 April Leanne Stephens’ striking paintings are inspired by the natural landscapes of New Zealand, Australia, Bali, Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam. Whilst celebrating their beauty and richness, Stephens’ work encourages us to consider mankind’s impact on the natural vistas which inspire her.

Midlands Potters Association Artists: Burnt Offerings

Friday 26 April – Saturday 1 June Founded in 1980, the Midlands Potters Association is a vibrant organisation with over 145 members spanning 10 counties in the Midlands area. Burnt Offerings will present a large collection of ceramics by artists from the MPA, selected by a professional judging panel.

Touring

Encounter an amazing collection of the best theatre, music, dance and visual arts in village venues thanks to inspiring local volunteers and funding from Arts Council England, Wiltshire Council and South Gloucestershire Council.

Rural Arts Touring is run by Pound Arts and covers two counties: Wiltshire and South Gloucestershire, working in partnership with volunteer promoters in over 60 villages to stage up to 100 professional performances every year.

Told through beautiful hand drawn animation, The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales unfolds around lovable countryside creatures as they try (and fail), to fulfil their traditional roles in the farm and the forest.

A lazy stork leaves the delivery of a baby in the care of a rabbit, a pig and a duck. A big, bad fox tries to live up to his reputation whilst he unwittingly adopts three confused baby chicks and in the film’s final tale, the animals embark on a hair brained scheme to replace Father Christmas.

Accessibility Pound Arts aims to make its work accessible to as many people as possible.

The Pound is an accessible building with a ramp at the main entrance, disabled toilet facilities, a hearing loop, and a limited number of disabled parking spaces. There is a flat entrance to the main auditorium, which has a limited number of spaces for wheelchair users.

Rural Touring productions take place in a range of venues and so the degree of access provision varies. If you have a query about access at a venue please contact the box office.

Wherever possible, with advance request, we aim to provide audio description, touch tours, captioning or BSL interpretation for events.

If you have any access requirements please contact the box office. It’s best to book as early as possible and we will endeavour meet your needs.
