ATLANTA — The 2024 International Production & Processing Expo is quickly approaching on the horizon and show organizers are planning for the largest trade show floor in the event’s history.

The IPPE will again be at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Ga., with the next event Jan. 30-Feb. 1, 2024. Already boasting more than 1,300 exhibitors and over 600,800 square feet of trade show exhibit space, and still growing; this show will have the GWCC bursting at the seams and organizers are wishing for attendees to — “EXPERIENCE IT ALL.” “IPPE’s extensive range of solutions draws industry leaders worldwide that are committed to business development, implementing best practices, updating operations and remaining competitive,” IPPE show management said. “We look forward to welcoming our domestic and international attendees to the 2024 IPPE!” The IPPE is an annual collaboration of three separate industry segments — the International Poultry Expo, sponsored by the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association; the American Feed Industry Association’s International Feed Expo; and the North American Meat Institute’s International Meat Expo, and the combined Expo provides not only exhibitors for each of the segments, but also many educational sessions to keep attendees up-to-date with the latest information on such topics as health, processing and technology. The show notes that more than 80 hours of education programs will be presented during the threeday event, as well as numerous on-floor demonstrations, product and service sessions, and networking opportunities.

Some of the highlights of the IPPE’s educational sessions will be the return of favorites such as the Poultry Market Intelligence Forum, the Pet Food Conference, and much more.

The Poultry Market Intelligence Forum, 9 a.m.-noon, Jan. 31, will have experts taking a close look at highly pathogenic avian influenza, and global and domestic market impacts.

Speakers will include Brian Earnest, CoBank; Dr. David Swayne, Birdflu Veterinarian LLC; and Christian Richter, The Policy Group. This forum is free to all IPPE attendees.

AFIA’s 17th annual Pet Food Conference will be Jan. 30, 7 a.m.-4 p.m., and is expected to bring hundreds of pet food manufacturers, ingredient suppliers, academics and marketers to discuss the latest trends in this field.

Tyson Foods opens new Va. fully-cooked food plant DANVILLE, Va. — Tyson Foods has officially opened a new $300 million fully-cooked food production facility in Danville, Va., delivering on its strategy of accelerating long-term growth, operating as efficiently as possible and investing in its poultry business.

It is one of the company’s mostautomated plants to date, marking the deployment of innovation pilots and prototypes at scale.

the completion of a funded research project by researchers at North Carolina State University that assessed using an electrostatic precipitator to improve indoor air quality in cage-free layer houses.

The research was made possible in part by an endowing Foundation gift from Cal-Maine Foods.

The research is part of the association’s comprehensive research program encompassing all phases of poultry and egg production and processing. In total, more than $36,000,000 has been invested in research by the Association and Foundation.

A brief description of the research — Project #F90: Using Electrostatic Precipitator to Improve Indoor Air Quality in Cage-Free Layer Houses; Dr. Sanjay Shah, Biological and Agricultural Engineering Department, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, N.C. Shah and colleagues with North Carolina State University recently completed a research project with the overall objective of developing and evaluating a recirculating electrostatic precipitator (ESP) for its ability to improve indoor air

quality in cage-free layer houses with litter floors.

Specific objectives were to design and fabricate a full-scale recirculating ESP unit; evaluate the removal efficiency of the ESP in the cage-free layer house for particulate matter, ammonia, and airborne bacteria and fungi; and evaluate the impact of the ESP on barn indoor air quality for particulate matter. The central hy-

pothesis of this research was that a recirculating ESP could reduce dust concentrations and thermal stratification in winter when ventilation rates are low and dust concentrations are higher.

• Plant Protein Group sales were $36.4 million. Plant Protein Group Adjusted EBITDA improved by 61.3 percent year over year to a loss of $9.4 million, en route to an Adjusted EBITDA target of neutral by the end of 2023.

• Capital expenditures were $50.5 million.

• The London Poultry facility transition is progressing on schedule. Three legacy facilities have fully transitioned their production volumes, and the transition from the fourth facility will begin shortly. The company expects London Poultry to be fully

ramped up by the end of 2023.

Maple Leaf also notes outlook highlights including: • Meat Protein: Expect midsingle digit sales growth in 2023, and Adjusted EBITDA Margin expansion to achieve a target range of 14 percent to 16 percent when markets normalize.

• Plant Protein: On track to deliver Adjusted EBITDA neutral by the end of 2023.

• Capital expenditure: For 2023 is expected to be roughly $200 million, down from prior guidance of less than $250 million. Approximately half of the spend will be attributable to Maintenance Capital and the balance attributable to Sales for the third quarter of 2023 were $1.245 billion compared to $1.231.9 billion last year, an increase of 1.1 percent. Sales growth in the Meat Protein Group was mostly offset by a 16.4 percent sales decline in the Plant Protein Group.

• Year-to-date sales for 2023 were $3.689.6 billion compared to $3.553.5 billion last year, an increase of 3.8 percent. Meat Protein Group sales grew 4.3 percent, which more than offset the 14.5 percent decline in the Plant

Protein Group during the same period.

• Net loss for the third quarter of 2023 was $4.3 million (4 cents loss per basic share) compared to a loss of $229.5 million ($1.86 loss per basic share) last year. The prior year net loss included a $190.9 million one-time non-cash impairment charge related to the Plant Protein Group, as well as a $31.5 million decrease in the fair value of biological assets compared to a $0.3 million increase in 2023.

The Meat Protein Group showed improved commercial results and pork market conditions, partly offset by cost inflation, along with increased start-up costs. The Plant Protein Group delivered improved margins along with lower Selling, General, and Administrative spending as the segment continues to reduce costs as part of its short term strategy. In addition, current year results were negatively impacted by higher interest expense with increased rates and higher debt largely to fund strategic capital expenditures, and by income tax expenses, which were a recovery in the prior year.

Nebraska reports HPAI case, urges biosecurity vigilance LINCOLN, Neb. — The Nebraska Department of Agriculture is reminding poultry owners to continue to monitor for and protect their birds against highly pathogenic avian influenza.

Recently, NDA in conjunction with the USDA, confirmed a case of HPAI in Nebraska in a small backyard flock in Colfax County.

“While Nebraska hasn’t had any reported cases of HPAI for a few months, we are disappointed but not surprised, to see another case, as there have been several confirmed HPAI cases in surrounding

states,” said Neb. State Veterinarian Dr. Roger Dudley. “Poultry producers need to continue to be vigilant in protecting their flocks.

It’s important for producers to know the signs and symptoms of HPAI and to continue to practice good biosecurity measures to help prevent the spread of this disease into their flocks.”

HPAI is a highly contagious virus that spreads easily among birds through nasal and eye secretions, as well as manure. The virus can be spread in various ways from flock to flock, including by wild birds, through contact with infected poultry, by equipment, and on the clothing and shoes of caretakers. Wild birds can carry the virus without becoming sick, while domesticated birds can become very sick and die.

Symptoms of HPAI in poultry include: a decrease in water consumption; lack of energy and appetite; decreased egg production or soft-shelled, misshapen eggs; nasal discharge, coughing, sneezing; incoordination; and diarrhea.

HPAI can also cause sudden death in birds even if they aren’t showing any other symptoms. HPAI can survive for weeks in contaminated

Wayne-Sanderson names Brixley Farm ‘top broiler producer’ DANVILLE, Ark. — The Wayne-Sanderson Farms Danville Complex has recently recognized Brixey Farm as Broiler Producer of the Year. This award acknowledges Kenneth (Kenny) and Kim Brixey, dedicated growers with over two decades’ experience working with Wayne-Sanderson Farms, for achieving the lowest production cost per pound for the year and excelling as the top producer of broilers out of 99 farms.

According to Kyle Klober, broiler manager at the Danville Complex, “Brixey Farm is known for consistently being a top producer,” having been awarded Broiler Producer of the Year previously in 2011. As part of the recognition, they received a Yeti cooler, a branded hat, and a plaque commemorating their achievement.”

“We’ve had a good working relationship from the get-go,” Kenny Brixley said, reflecting on growing for Wayne-Sanderson Farms. “I view the relationship

between us as a partnership with each other. If they take care of their responsibilities, I will take care of mine.”

Brixley’s venture into broiler production began in 1998 when he produced his first flock for Wayne-Sanderson Farms (then Wayne). Through the years, alongside his wife Kim, they ex-

Feed edu. program preps industry for regulatory changes ATLANTA — The American Feed Industry Association’s free Feed Education Program returns to the 2024 International Production & Processing Expo to update attendees on recent changes to animal food regulations within several federal agencies and provide an outlook on how such changes could affect the animal food industry in 2024.

The two-hour program, to be held Jan. 31, is ideal for animal food facility managers and operations and mill personnel looking to learn about the latest regulatory requirements impacting their businesses.

“The AFIA Feed Education Program will keep industry stakeholders informed of potential changes in regulations. Anyone who works in the manufacturing side of our industry – plant manager, operations, quality personnel, safety and health, and others, will benefit from this program,” said Gary Huddleston, AFIA’s director of feed manufacturing and regulatory affairs.

USDA announces several investments to ag. industries PT

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — The Biden-Harris Administration has partnered with the USDA to provide aid to assist with the supply chain, grow small businesses and increase trade relations, it was recently announced.

President Biden has been crisscrossing the country touting “Bidenomics,” however the American public are not pleased with Biden’s handling of the economy. According to an Associated Press poll obtained by Politico, over a third of Americans or 36 percent favor the administration’s management of the economy. In June the poll stood at 34 percent and moved up to 37 percent in July. As of October, usinflationcalculator.com confirms that the inflation rate is 3.2 percent. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the unemployment rate stands at 3.9 percent. CNN reported in October, the United States saw 150,000 jobs added.

Supply chain On Nov. 27, the White House established the Council on Supply Chain Resilience. A press statement released by the USDA said President Biden and U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack declared the agency will be investing in the American food and agriculture supply. The USDA will grow markets for agricultural manufacturers and decrease food costs.

Vilsack said, “the Biden-Harris Administration is championing America’s farmers and ranchers by helping expand businesses and supporting more robust American supply chains. Today’s investments in agricultural producers and rural entrepreneurs will create better economic opportunities that bolster food supply chains across the country and increase competition, a key pillar of Bidenomics. This will result in more affordable prices and choices for consumers, as well as more opportunities and revenue for farmers.”

The new investments will be added to recent investments made by the USDA that

contributed to President Biden’s Investing in America “to increase competition and lower costs by enhancing independent meat and poultry and other diversified food processing capacity, strengthening local and regional food systems, and expanding domestic, innovative fertilizer production.”

The USDA’s investments will go to fund 185 projects worth an estimated $196 million.

These funds and projects will aide producers and entrepreneurs in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming and Puerto Rico.

• Expand collaboration between USDA’s Rural Partners Network and SBA’s Resource Partners Network.

• Cross-promote programs that support rural businesses and socially disadvantaged communities.

Trade relations On Nov. 16, Vilsack stated upcoming efforts to boost the U.S. agricultural trade. These efforts include planned trade missions for 2024 and the launching of a public comment phase for the new Regional Agricultural Promotion Program.

“Market diversification is an important tool for maximizing growth opportunities for U.S. agriculture, as well as hedging the risk of market contraction and general volatility in the global marketplace,” Vilsack said. “USDA is committed to promoting export opportunities in non-traditional markets and ensuring that U.S. agricultural commodities and products are available to diverse consumer groups around the world.”

Back in October, Vilsack said $1.3 billion from the Commod-

ity Credit Corporation funds will be used to create RAPP. It will also strengthen and vary trade opportunities, plus gain cooperation for specialty crop businesses.

According to a release, “this investment will enable American exporters to enter new markets and expand market share in current and growth markets.”

The administration has established new opportunities for U.S. ranchers and farmers such as: • Vietnam opening its market for U.S. grapefruit exporters.

• India dropping the retaliatory tariffs on apples, chickpeas, lentils, almonds and walnuts.

The Indian government also reduced tariffs for turkey, duck, blueberries and cranberries.

• Canada approving legislative recognition of U.S. biofuels, maintaining the largest and most dependable export market for U.S. ethanol and biodiesel.

• Mexico granting market access to U.S. potatoes following more than 20 years of engagement.

• Japan renegotiating beef safeguard levels under the U.S.-Japan Trade Agreement, reducing tariffs and generating growth opportunities for $150 million in beef exports; and, • Brazil agreeing not to change import certification requirements, ensuring continued exports of U.S. milk, beef, and seafood to this important market.

President Biden gives ‘pardon’ to National Thanksgiving turkeys WASHINGTON — National Turkey Federation Chairman Steve Lykken, Jennie-O Turkey Store, presented the National Thanksgiving Turkey named “Liberty” to President Joseph R. Biden Jr. on Nov. 20 during the National Thanksgiving Turkey Presentation at the White House.

Liberty, along with alternate turkey “Bell,” received a formal pardon from the holiday table and will now reside at the University of Minnesota’s College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences in St. Paul, Minn. This year’s presentation marked the 76th year of this time-honored American tradition dating back to 1947.

“We appreciate President Biden for warmly welcoming the National Turkey Federation, and my esteemed colleagues and associates from the Jennie-O Team to the White House earlier today,” Lykken said. “This is a busy time of year for our industry and we’re grateful for the turkey producers and farmers that deliver food to our tables this holiday and every day.”

The 2023 National Thanksgiving Turkeys were raised in Willmar, Minn., under the direction of Lykken, who is a 31-year veteran in the turkey industry and currently serves as president of Jennie-O Turkey Store. Lykken was joined in presenting the National Thanksgiving Turkey by Jose Rojas, assistant vice president of live production at Jennie-O Turkey Store.

While in Washington, D.C., Liberty and Bell stayed at the historic Willard InterContinental. Following their visit to the White House, the turkeys will retire to the University of Minnesota’s College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences in St. Paul where they will receive housing, daily care, and access to veterinary services under the experienced care of veterinarians, faculty and poultry science students.

National Thanksgiving Turkeys head to new home at U of M ST. PAUL, Minn. — The University of Minnesota’s College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) will be the new forever home to the official National Thanksgiving Turkey, Liberty, and its alternate, Bell, who were pardoned by President Joe Biden at the White House on Nov. 20.

This is the University of Minnesota’s first time serving as home of the National Thanksgiving Turkey.

At the 76th National Thanksgiving Turkey Presentation, National Turkey Federation Chairman Steve Lykken, group vice president for Hormel Foods and president of Jennie-O Turkey Store, presented Liberty and Bell to President Biden in a ceremony on the White House lawn, where the President granted them a formal, official pardon from the dinner table. University of Min-

nesota Interim President Jeff Ettinger and CFANS Dean Brian Buhr were on hand to celebrate the special occasion.

After two days of paparazzi, red carpet, and fanfare, the now famous turkeys are headed home to a quiet and comfortable abode at CFANS on the U of M’s Twin Cities campus in St. Paul, where they will spend the rest of their lives serving as educational ambassadors in Minnesota, the top turkey-producing state in the U.S. At CFANS they will be cared for by some of the world’s top poultry science experts, faculty and students in the Department of Animal Science and will help instruct the next generation of agricultural students.

“Every day, our students, faculty and staff work toward a future world that will sustain our natural resources while feeding our growing population,” said

Ettinger. “It’s an honor for the U of M and the state of Minnesota to have the National Thanksgiving Turkeys make their home here.”

Turkey farmers are critical to Minnesota, providing the state with more than $1 billion in economic activity and more than 26,000 jobs, the Minnesota Turkey Growers Association notes.

“Turkey production has long been a fundamental part of Minnesota agriculture, and is impor-

MADRID — KFC has challenged gamers to recreate its secret fried chicken recipe in the new video game “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” after players discovered that the new game features the possibility of cooking fried chicken for the first time.

KFC launched the challenge and got thousands of gamers from 17 different countries to compete in “The Recipe Run,” the first brand-created speedrun to see who could cook their own KFC-style recipe the fastest in Zelda TOTK. In order to complete in The Recipe Run, users had to elaborate their own version of KFC’s secret recipe in the video game by gathering chicken, oil and 11 herbs and spices of their choice from all those scattered throughout the virtual world of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom.

Tips for successfully cooking a turkey

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — There are many iconic dishes to be prepared for the holidays. Some of these dishes include the stuffing, the potatoes, the cranberry sauce, the casseroles and much more. Every family has their own unique way of preparing these dishes. Most families pass down recipes from generation to generation. Some families even keep their recipes a secret.

However, a main staple of a Thanksgiving and holiday meal is the turkey. Turkeys can be smoked, baked, roasted, or fried.

A traditional way of cooking a Thanksgiving turkey is to roast it.

Thawing

According to the USDA, there are a few ways to thaw out a turkey. However, there are also unsafe ways to defrost a turkey such as: • Thawing a turkey on the counter, in the garage or on the back porch.

• Thawing a turkey in a brown paper grocery bag or plastic garbage bag.

• Using the dishwasher to thaw a turkey (with or without water).

• Any method that is not the refrigerator, cold water, or the microwave.

Not to worry if someone prefers to cook their turkey frozen, it will just take longer to cook.

The USDA states that, “A solidly frozen turkey will take at least 50 percent longer to cook than a thawed turkey. If your turkey is only partially frozen, remem-

ber that it will take a bit longer to cook.” The inner thigh of the turkey must reach a temperature of 165 degrees F to be finished cooking.

Roasting

Butterball provides several tips on how to roast a turkey that is thawed or frozen.

If the turkey has been defrosted or frozen, Butterball gives the following suggestions: 1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Drain juices and pat dry with clean paper towels.

2. Place turkey breast-side-up on a flat rack in a shallow roasting pan 2 to 2½ inches deep.

3. Turn the wings back to hold the neck skin in place. (Tucking the wings will help stabilize the turkey in the pan and when carving) Brush or spray skin lightly with vegetable or cooking oil for best appearance.

4. Insert an oven-safe meat thermometer deep into the lower part of the thigh without touching the bone. If the turkey is stuffed, and the thigh is up to temperature, move the thermometer to the center of the stuffing.

5. Place your turkey in the oven.

6. When the turkey is about ⅔ done, loosely cover the breast with a piece of foil to prevent overcooking.

7. Your turkey is done when the temperature with a meat thermometer is 180° F in thigh and 170° F in breast or stuffing.

8. Lift turkey onto platter and let stand for 15 minutes before carving.

It is important to remember that the cook time for a turkey adjusts by its weight.

Purdue conference to explore economy outlook, biofuels future Purdue University

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Registration is open for Purdue University’s annual Top Farmer Conference. Sunbelt Ag Expo names 2023 Southeastern Farmer of Year MOULTRIE, Ga. — Steve Cobb, of Lake City, Ark., has been selected as the overall winner of the Sunbelt Ag Expo Southeastern Farmer of the Year award for 2023.

Cobb Farms is a partnership enterprise that began more than 50 years ago in Craighead County. Today, on a total of 4,500 acres (2,500 rented and 2,000 owned), it grows row crops, produce, and show pigs. Three entities make up the partnership: 1) Steve Cobb and Family Farm is a leading show-pig operation that produces 1,000-plus show pigs a year as well as breeding stock for club pig production. 2) Cane Island Farms oversees the row crops of corn, cotton, and peanuts. 3) The Cane Island Produce branch grows vegetables, specializing in year-round greenhouse tomatoes.

They married in 1977, and she had a 32-year career as a secondgrade teacher, retiring about a decade ago. All these years later he is known on the farm as “Papa,” and she is known on the farm as “Gran” and in the community as “Miss Terri.”

“One of the biggest joys of my life is that she and I live on that same farm where we raised our three children, Jarrett, Aaron, and Leslie,” Cobb added. “Our eight grandchildren are around every week, running and playing on the same land.”

The company runs eight trucks daily and helps out local brokers as well.

“I was born on a subsistence farm where my parents owned 40 acres given to my mother by her father,” Cobb said. “Over time they rented another 200 acres. Our family farm looked like ‘Old McDonald’s Farm’ that you see in children’s books. We raised cotton, wheat, soybeans, and enough corn to feed the livestock, which consisted of two dairy cows that we milked daily and three brood sows. The barn yard and house yard were full of chickens that produced eggs, and we planted a big garden every year.”

Peanuts are marketed through Birdsong Peanuts for cleaning, shelling, and sizing before they’re shipped to food manufacturers. The farm has plans to build a feed warehouse to improve efficiency and quality of feed making. Designs are in the

works for an off-site show pig fitting facility as well.

Cane Island Produce, the newest endeavor in the partnership, sells through a local community network and on its Facebook page. The latter features pictures of a variety of mouthwatering sausage balls, baked beans with sausage, vegetable soup with sausage, half and whole hog packages, homemade jam, and green tomato chowchow. Cane Island Produce has recently branched out from the initial greenhouse tomato operation into other vegetables such as purple hull peas, okra, green beans, cucumbers, squash, bell peppers, and jalapeno peppers.

The company has plans to add more greenhouses and expand into flower production.

On Cane Island Farms, Lyerly said they are constantly exploring new ideas and technology.

tion risers and wells controlled by smartphone,” Lyerly noted.

“We’re also considering the idea of building solar arrays on our farm and leveraging technology, such as targeted treatment with drones.” He added, “Each of our entities holds environmental conservation to the highest standards. We’re currently focused on irrigation practices and seed selection as well as timing and rate of input applications.

Through our partnership with NRCS, we’re looking into implementation of regenerative agriculture production practices.”

“The late 1990s basically changed the entire swine industry,” Cobb said. “Before that time, it was mostly family-owned operations, but that’s no longer the case. There was a market crash in 1998 that forced us to change our entire model from breeding stock production to focusing on show pig production. We also had to be flexible in marketing 47

our product and finding a sustainable customer base. My son Aaron also stepped-up big time to support this important and much-loved part of our farm business.”

As for Cane Island Farms Partnership, a huge disaster struck in October 2014, when a terrible hailstorm hit just days before harvest.

“That storm took out 75 percent of our cotton crop,” Owens said. “The same year our grain brokerage filed for bankruptcy, resulting in a total loss of our corn crop. It was a year full of pain as we lost one of our most beloved employees, Glen Eaton, in a tragic accident. We simply came to a full stop and started reevaluating how to go forward.”

That’s when the farms added peanuts to their rotation, a risky move that paid dividends and enabled the partnership to remain competitive.

“The peanuts also helped us increase yields on our cotton on the years following the peanut crop,” Owens added.

On a more personal note, in 2010, one of Cobb’s granddaughters, Scout Lyerly, was just two years old when she was diagnosed with stage 4 Neuroblastoma, a cancer of the nervous system.

“This illness taught each of us more valuable life lessons than we can ever list,” Cobb said. “We grew to cherish each other more every single day and thank the Lord for his goodness in bringing Scout through that ordeal. She’s now a very lively 14-year-old teenager. We continue to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis for their wonderful care.”

Cobb is a long-time member of Farm Bureau and a supporter of the local Buffalo Island Central FFA Chapter. He has just completed his second and final term on the National Swine Registry Board of Directors and Executive Committee. He serves on the board of the American Yorkshire Club, and also judges local, state,

and national championship show hog events. He is a member of both the local and state FFA Alumni Association.

When schedules allow, Steve and Terri Cobb love going to the athletic events their eight grandchildren are involved in: baseball, basketball, barrel racing, and other rodeo activities.

Their number one getaway spot is a lake house they own 90 miles away in the Ozark Mountains at Lake Thunderbird.

“It’s just an hour and a half away, so it’s easy to enjoy the area year-round,” Cobb said. “We fish, swim, water-ski and go tubing and just have plain old fun together.”

As for lessons learned from farming, Cobb said,“In a practical sense, you have to be intense in your work ethic and progressive.

Change has been so phenomenal and fast during my lifetime that it’s almost overwhelming. We’ve gone in a few short generations from small subsistence farms to large commercial enterprises. So, it’s important to keep up the pace and stay open to innovative techniques, equipment, and ideas.”

“On a more philosophical note,

what I’ve learned from farming is how important it is to appreciate the cycle of growth, whether it’s crops, baby animals, children, or grandchildren,” Cobb added.

“Everything is constantly renewing. Agriculture mimics life in that way, being a constant display of development to fruition.

And lastly, I’ve learned how important the ag industry, with its production and delivery system, is to our survival as a species. The scale of farm operations has definitely changed but the roots are the same; they’re eternal. What we do is essential for all life as we know it. I’m grateful and blessed to be part of that.”

“At any national livestock show or state fair livestock show in the United States, Steve Cobb and his family are recognized as industry leaders,” Ladd said.

They’ve spent countless hours giving back to the local FFAs and 4-H Clubs and have raised money for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis. It’s truly an impressive extended family partnership with a track record of excellent farming, integrity, and generosity.”

The new Farmer of the Year was selected for the honor by three judges. This year’s judging tour of all 10 state farmer winners took place during the week of Aug. 14–18. The judges included David Wildy, Manila, Ark., the overall winner of the award in 2016; Joe West, retired assistant dean UGA Tifton Campus; and Darren Parker, vice president, Massey Ferguson North America. Judges typically serve for three years before rotating off the team.

“Excellence in Agriculture is how I would describe this year’s State Farmers of the Year. They are a leading group of farmers and businessmen who represent their states with excellence,” Wildy said. “Just as I expected, this year’s winner was an extremely difficult decision for the judging team. But, without question, this year’s winner represents precisely what

Landmark tool supports meat sector greenhouse gas reduction targets WASHINGTON — A new tool released jointly by the North American Meat Institute and the United Nations Global Compact Network USA (the U.S. chapter of the United Nations Global Compact) will aid meat companies of all sizes in measuring greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions — advancing the Meat Institute’s aim for 100 percent of its members to set science-based GHG reduction targets in line with the Paris Climate Agreement.

The tool was developed through Meat Institute member participation in the UN Global Compact Network USA’s Climate Ambition Accelerator program, a six-month program designed to equip companies with the knowledge and skills to path toward achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

The tool uses real-life data methodologies and structural details (with data randomized and company details anonymized) to provide a concrete example that takes readers from defining a company’s operational and organizational boundaries through understanding and measuring its direct, indirect, and value chain emissions (scope 1, 2, and 3).

Network USA Executive Director Adam Roy Gordon applauded the new tool and called for further public-private partnership to ad-

vance global goals.

“Ambitious business leaders recognize that taking climate action goes hand in hand with building prosperous communities, businesses and economies,” Gordon said. “Developing and disseminating resources that share technical expertise is key to empowering businesses to fulfill meaningful emissions reductions at scale.”

Meat Institute President and CEO Julie Anna Potts added, “Sustaining meat for generations to come requires not only clear vision but also a concrete commitment to developing practical resources, like the GHG inventory tool, that help companies of all sizes implement best practices sector-wide.

“The GHG inventory tool is a major step toward achieving the Meat Institute’s Protein PACT targets, which advance continuous improvement in the sector and sustainability of all kinds — environmental, economic, and social.”

Directly citing GHG Protocol and other relevant international standards, the tool defines key terms, details data collection and science-based calculation methodologies, provides alternative calculation methods, and shares other resources that might be of assistance to companies conducting GHG inventories.

UGA food science student named T winner of ‘Testing for Life’ award r

ATHENS, Ga. — Zhihan Xian’s innovative research into new methods of food origin tracing has been named this year’s winner of the Testing for Life Student Award by AOAC International, a nonprofit association that was established in 1884 and seeks to set standards of analysis to help ensure food safety globally.

Xian, a doctoral student in food science at the University of Georgia’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, is on the leading edge of research of food origin authentication.

Typically done with chemical analysis, food origin authentication is a method of testing food to ensure that it originates where a producer says it does.

Not all food producers have the

of determining their source of origin. A microbiome is made up of a variety of microscopic organisms such as fungi and bacteria, both beneficial and harmful.

Along with help from Deng, Xian tested the DNA of the microbiome that exists on the surface of garlic obtained from six different countries.

The results demonstrated that the food microbiome contains origin-specific information, giving the method potential as a useful tool in stopping origin fraud practices. Testing the microbiome of foods could prove to be more effective than traditional, chemical-based testing based on the results of machine-learning analysis applied to the study.

Xian hopes this new information will lead to new tools for government and industry to test the origins of food.

“I want to thank Dr. Deng and

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences reached a milestone that illustrates the momentum growing across agriculture and life sciences industries.

The college reported the largest class of incoming freshmen in its history — 1,400. The incoming freshman class exceeded the number of confirmed freshmen at this time last year, 997, by 40 percent.

Dr. Jeffrey W. Savell, vice chancellor and dean for Agriculture and Life Sciences, said the freshman enrollment numbers are a sign that the college is continuing in the right direction. He said the achievement is indicative of the ongoing collective efforts to offer the best learning opportunities and environment in the nation, but also of a purposeful effort to produce more graduates.

Savell said the college has committed to creating an environment for student success by recruiting and retaining high quality faculty and staff and investing in facilities and cuttingedge technology for research and training.

The record-breaking number of freshmen is a good indicator that those investments are helping student recruitment and make the college an attractive destination for the “best and brightest.”

“We have benefitted from planting and cultivating seeds of excellence,” Savell said. “Our goal is to plant more seeds for the future because flourishing students and former students are the fastest and most impactful ways to make a positive impact in our world, and agriculture and life sciences.”

Skaggs said these students are entering careers society relies on, and that jobs in agriculture and life sciences lead to happier, more fulfilling careers according to recent research. Agriculture and forestry have the highest levels of self-reported happiness — and lowest levels of self-reported stress — of any major industry category, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ American Time-Use Survey.

The college is the largest comprehensive agriculture program in the U.S. and has a track record of preparing students who are in high demand, Skaggs said, noting that the curriculum goes far beyond traditional agriculture.

The college’s 15 departments house more than 300 faculty experts and offer 90-degree plans for undergraduate and graduate students. Career paths include sustainable agriculture, environmental sciences, human health POULTRY TIMES

and nutrition, economics and financial planning, animal and plant sciences, and agricultural engineering, Skaggs said.

“What we do impacts so many critical industries people depend on every day,” he said. “We used to say that we feed, fuel, clothe and shelter society, but what we do has moved into so much more.

Our areas span from disease prevention and environmental conservation to the social sciences.

We help provide the necessities, but we are also improving quality of life.”

Skaggs believes the college also uniquely prepares graduates to enter the workforce or continue their education. Experiential and cooperative learning opportunities based around cutting-edge laboratories and technology, small course sizes, professional internships and study-abroad programs help develop graduates that companies seek to hire.

More than 2,400 students in the college received internships or field experience in 2022.

The college is also home to more than 60 clubs and organizations dedicated to connecting students with others to explore 55

their passions and serve the community, Skaggs said.

“The critical things employers are looking for are practical, hands-on experience and candidates with teamwork and leadership skills,” he said. “Those traits are all part of an overall professionalism they want, and Aggies rank very highly in all of them.”

The college will continue to focus on reaching prospective students through a range of student development strategies to maintain this momentum, Skaggs said.

More than 1,900 degrees were awarded by the College in 20222023.

“Our graduates will be our legacy,” he said. “They represent future industry leaders and innovators and will lead the directional changes in agriculture and all the aspects of everyday life our programs touch. We envision success for our students, and we want prospective students to see the college as a place to grow and learn, and to launch their career and adult life.”

The Port of Savannah’s latest order of ship-to-shore electric cranes transits the Savannah River channel on Aug. 24.

Port of Savannah receives four new electric ship-to-shore cranes SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Port of Savannah received four Super Post-Panamax ship-to-shore cranes recently, upgrading the crane fleet to 34 machines at Garden City Terminal after four older cranes are retired and recycled.

“Along with the completion of our project to improve Berth 1, these cranes will help deliver faster turn times to our ocean carrier customers, including the largest vessels calling on the U.S. East Coast,” said Griff Lynch, Georgia Ports Authority president and CEO. “No other terminal in the nation can bring more cranes to bear, or match the efficiency, productivity and global connectivity of the Port of Savannah.”

Designed by Konecranes of Finland, the all-electric cranes arrived on the vessel BigLift Barentsz.

Two of the cranes will be 295 feet tall and two will be 306 feet tall at the highest point when fully assembled. The reach of the cranes will be 22 and 24 containers wide, respectively. The taller cranes will be offloaded at Berth 1 at Garden City Terminal, the others will be installed on the upriver

Ship-to-shore cranes are the workhorses of container port operations, unloading and loading cargo from the container ships that call on the port.

GPA received a previous batch of four cranes in February to work the recently renovated Berth 1, which is now capable of serving vessels with a capacity of 16,000+ twenty-foot equivalent container units. The cranes and improved dock increase Garden City Terminal berth productivity by 25 percent or 1.5 million TEUs of annual capacity.

The new equipment is part of GPA’s $1.9 billion infrastructure improvement plan to keep pace with future supply chain needs, the port noted.

“The ratio of GPA’s economic impact equates to roughly one job per nine TEUs moved,” said Stacy Watson, director of economic and industrial development at GPA. “By expanding our annual capacity by 3 million TEUs over the next three years, GPA is also increasing its job-supporting capability by more than 300,000 jobs for Georgians.”

ABAC awarded USPOULTRY Foundation student recruiting grant to raise awareness TUCKER, Ga. — The USPOULTRY Foundation has awarded a $1,175 student recruiting grant to Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC) in Tifton, Ga. The grant was made possible in part by an endowing foundation gift from the Don Dalton Student Recruiting Fund.

The grant funds will be used to raise awareness of the significant expansion of the poultry industry in South Georgia and the correlating opportunities for well-prepared graduates.

The recently approved Poultry Science Pathway and middle and high school curricula have resulted in greater interest in the poultry industry and ABAC’s offerings. The funding will also be used to provide additional lab supplies.

The USPOULTRY Foundation board approved student recruiting grants totaling $306,366 to 28 colleges and universities across the United States with a poultry science department or industry-related degree program.

The USPOULTRY Foundation provides annual recruiting funds to colleges and universities to attract students to their poultry programs. The grants are made possible by gifts to the Foundation from companies, individuals and families, in addition to funds earned over the years at the International Poultry Expo, part of the International Production & Processing Expo.

Five fan fundamental maintenance tips

AUBURN, Ala. — Many companies and producers have already started to check poultry house wind speeds for adequate hot weather bird cooling ability.

During these times we are often asked the question, “what can I do to ensure the houses will pull maximum wind speed”?

The simple answer is to make sure every tunnel fan is operating at maximum potential. The most common answer we get for fan maintenance is, “change the belt”. Yes, fan belts made the list but, not first in the process of proper and complete fan

maintenance! Please read below to find out why we think belt replacement should come last when conducting complete fan maintenance.

fan. Any motor that intermittently stops working, is slow to start, or makes a humming noise, should be repaired, or replaced immediately! We recommend having at least one replacement tunnel fan motor of each size on the farm. A new belt will not fix a blown motor!

motors going out. The issue with some motors might not be the motor itself, but with the start or run capacitors that are designed to help the motor operate properly. If you have a fan that is slow to start, it is likely a capacitor.

Notice the top of the capacitor is bulging out and corroded. Instead of replacing the motor a qualified electrician or capable producer or equipment maintenance technician could troubleshoot and fix this problem without replacing the motor. This would save costs and time for the producer. Adding a new v-belt to a fan with a bad start capacitor will not fix the fan and certainly will not improve the house wind speed.

applicable) next. The tensioners’ job is to keep adequate tension on the fan belt so that the motor delivers the horsepower to the fan pulley with minimal slippage. These tensioners are notorious for making loud noises when the bearings are dry and adding friction instead of tension. If you can hear the tensioner from over 250’ away, it is time to take action and replace those noisy tensioners.

They are robbing your fans of CFM’s and working against your efficient tunnel ventilation system. These should be greased (if applicable), lubricated, and exercised at least twice a year to make sure you get full life expectancy from each fan. They must be replaced if the pulley doesn’t spin freely or makes a noise, doesn’t maintain belt tension, or is out of alignment. A new belt will not fix a bad tensioner!

3. Bearings Every fan bearing should be inspected for dry bearings, noise, or wear that will not allow the fan prop to spin as freely as

possible with minimum friction.

It doesn’t work that way.

These can be expensive, labor intensive to replace, and cause a fan to be down for an extended period if neglected. Get those bearings tuned up ASAP! A new belt will not fix a bad bearing!

4. Pulleys Fan motor pulleys and fan prop pulleys must be aligned, in like-new shape, and not scrubbing on the fan frame. Worn or “cupped” pulleys must be replaced. We recommend replacing pulleys with the exact fit and size as what you have for optimum performance.

Increasing size can increase fan power but will also increase power bills and may shorten the life of the fan motor if this isn’t engineered. If you are considering this, please consult the fan manufacturer prior to implementation. A new belt will not fix a worn pulley!

this problem? If you guessed the pulley is in contact with the fan motor frame, is causing substantial noise and friction on the fan motor, and wearing the belt out prematurely, then you would be correct! A new belt would not fix this fan problem!

5. Belts New fan belts won’t fix most fan problems! Consider the following questions before you just slap on new fan belts and move onto the next task on the list!

New belts are often not the correct fan maintenance repair!

• Would you put new tires on your vehicle if you knew the front wheels were out of alignment (vibrates as you travel down road) and you noticed the existing tires were severely worn only on one side of the tires?

No, you should get an alignment done prior to installing new tires! Installing a new vbelt on a fan that has pulleys on the motor, tensioner, or fan out of alignment will only result in a prematurely worn belt. The corrective action would be to

Similar to installing new v-belts on a fan, the fan shaft bearings and tensioner bearings must be in new or like-new operation so that installing a new belt will result in peak fan operation and not just another worn belt the next day or week.

Please take the necessary time and effort to slow down and carefully inspect every tunnel fan that you have on the farm.

Take a serious look at each fan and make sure that every major fan component is working to the best of its’ ability. We want you to spend your time and money wisely and in the best effort to protect the investment made in every fan. Each and every fan component plays a vital role in the fan system’s performance just as each fan plays a vital role in the overall full wind speed potential in the house. Get all you can get out of every fan on the

• Would you install new tires on a vehicle with a slipping transmission?

No, you would need to have the transmission repaired or replaced, because installing new tires would not overcome the bad transmission. Similarly installing a new v-belt on a fan with a damaged tensioner will only result in poor fan performance and a prematurely worn belt. Don’t waste your time and money on a belt when it really needs a new tensioner.

• Would you install new tires on a vehicle with an engine that is overheating?

No, new tires will not keep the engine from overheating and forcing the vehicle to shut down during hot weather use! Installing a new v-belt on a fan motor that is overheating will not result in maximum fan performance or keep the fan from shutting off when it needs to be running. The fan will still shut down when it overheats.

• Would you install new tires on a vehicle that has damaged wheel bearings?

Vertical vs. horizontal Circulation fan system pros and cons

ATHENS, Ga. — There are essentially two types of poultry house circulation fan systems: vertical and horizontal. In a vertical circulation fan system, fans are located in the center of the house, typically near the ceiling, and are oriented to blow straight down towards the floor.

The air then moves across the floor, up the side walls, and back along the ceiling to the center of the house, creating a vertical air circulation pattern.

In some instances, the circulation fans are directed to blow air upward towards the ceiling, creating a circular air flow pattern in the opposite direction.

In either case, air circulation tends to be localized around each circulation fan.

In a horizontal circulation fan system, the circulation fans are placed along the center of the house, next to the ceiling, moving air horizontally along the ceiling toward the house’s end walls. Upon reaching the end walls, the air then changes direction and moves back along the side walls as well as along the floor underneath the circulation fans. Whereas with a vertical circulation fan system, mixing/circulation tends to occur in zones around each circulation fan, with horizontal circulation fan systems, the circulation fans tend to work together as a single unit to mix the air throughout a house and in the process create uniform conditions throughout a house.

A study was conducted on a broiler farm in North Georgia comparing a vertical circulation fan system to a horizontal circulation fan system. The vertical circulation fan system consisted of eight Cubo vertical circulation fans evenly spaced

along a 40’ X 500’ dropped ceiling broiler house (Figure 1).

Each Cubo unit consisted of a 1/3 hp motor powering a centrifugal blower, located 18” above the floor. The fan pulls air off the ceiling via a flexible duct then blows it out in a 360-degree pattern horizontally across

ment over the litter, thus promoting litter drying.

With the horizontal circulation fan system, the air within the brooding area/house was mixed from end to end, moving cool air near the brooding curtain/end walls to the center of the house and warmer air near the center of the house to the end walls/brooding curtain.

The thorough mixing of the air in the house resulted in consistent house temperatures, which was reflected in more uniform heater runtimes (Figure 4 and 5).

Furthermore, a horizontal circulation fan system’s ability to move excessive bird heat from the center of the house towards the end walls, where extra heat is often needed due to tunnel fan and tunnel door leakage, could result in significant fuel savings.

The study also found that a horizontal circulation fan system was able to produce significantly more air movement over the litter throughout a house than the vertical circulation fan system. With the vertical circulation fans, air movement was limited to within 15’ to 20’ of each fan, while the horizontal circulation fans worked together as a system, creating air speeds of between 100 - 150 ft/min over most of the house’s floor area, which in turn resulted in overall drier litter and improved paw health. Though there was more air movement, no adverse chick reactions were observed.

The study illustrated that there is much more to be gained from a circulation fan system than simply moving hot air off the ceiling. A proper circulation fan system can not only break up temperature stratification, but also promote more uniform house conditions, drier litter, and improved foot pad health as well (Figures 6 and 7).

Management, feed formulation approaches in hot environments

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. — High temperatures can be an obstacle in livestock production, particularly in tropical regions.

Broilers are more susceptible to high ambient temperatures because they lack sweat glands to dissipate heat from their bodies.

Heat stress occurs when the ambient temperature is higher than the thermo-neutral zone.

Heat stress can be classified into 2 main types based on the duration of exposure: short term (acute, less than 1 week) or long term (chronic, greater than 1 week). Heat stress can impact bird physiology and growth performance, leading to welfare concerns and economic losses in

Heat stress also has an adverse impact on the immune system efficiency by reducing the lymphoid organ weights, including the thymus, spleen, and bursa of Fabricius. Nutrient usage is adversely impacted, which, in turn, may compromise gut health. In addition, heat stress often has a negative impact on meat quality by reducing muscle water holding capacity and increasing fat deposition and drip loss.

Periods of high heat exposure leads to muscle breakdown to provide amino acid substrates for gluconeogenesis. Heat stress can also cause oxidative stress by elevating free radicals. Free radicals can damage intestinal cell membranes and vital components resulting in apoptosis, intestinal irritation, and leaky gut syndrome.

• Heat stress impacts on broiler growth performance and physiology.

The negative impacts of heat stress on broiler growth and physiology are shown in Figure 1. Heat stress can decrease feed intake and bodyweight. The reduction of feed intake is a mechanism to reduce metabolic heat production. In contrast, water intake increases which can negatively impact litter quality.

At high body temperatures, a broiler’s respiratory rate will increase to promote evaporative cooling through panting. This reduces blood carbon dioxide and causes respiratory alkalosis.

Nutrient and feed formulation strategies • Protein and amino acids During heat exposure, proteins denaturation and protein synthesis are impaired. Moreover, the reduction of feed intake during heat stress causes lower protein and amino acid intake that will negatively impact growth. Selection of protein sources that are high in digestible protein and amino acids can reduce the impact of heat stress by enhancing protein usage and reducing heat production during digestion. The ratio of each amino acid (ideal amino acid) should be balanced to improve protein usage. The application of synthetic amino acids is one (Continued on page 77)

consideration to maintain balanced amino acids in the diet.

• Dietary electrolyte balance to prevent alkalosis Electrolytes are solubilized compounds that help to maintain acid-base balance during periods of respiratory alkalosis.

In broiler nutrition, the main electrolytes are sodium (Na), potassium (K) and Chlorine (Cl).

Sodium chloride (NaCl) and sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) are frequently used as Na and Cl in broiler diets, and K is usually obtained from soybean meal.

For Cobb diets, each mineral has a minimum requirement, such as 0.16 percent to 0.23 percent for Na, 0.16 percent to 0.3 percent for Cl, and 0.6 percent to 0.95 percent for K. Please refer to our broiler nutrition supplements for more details available at Cobb-Vantress.com.

To maintain electrolyte balance, the diets must maintain the correct ratio of cations (Na, K) and anions (Cl).

• Vitamins and minerals to bind free radicals Vitamins and minerals have antioxidant properties that

can reduce the negative impact of free radicals caused by heat stress. Vitamin E, a lipid-soluble vitamin at 100 to 250 mg/Kg, can improve broiler growth performance during heat exposure.

Even though birds can synthesize vitamin C from glucose in

the kidneys, the supplementation of vitamin C at 200 mg/Kg in the diet can reduce the negative effects of heat stress. Selenium is an important cellular antioxidant and has a minimum requirement of 0.35 mg/Kg feed.

This mineral also has a synergis-

tic effect with vitamin E. In general, the addition of vitamins and minerals 10 percent to 20 percent above the minimum requirement can help prevent nutrition deficiencies since feed intake can decrease under (Continued on page 79)

heat stress. Consult with your nutritionist before making any large adjustments in feed formulations.

Zinc can improve broiler performance and prevent lipid oxidation in muscle and is important as dietary lipid can be easily oxidized at high temperatures. Lipid oxidation can be prevented by adding antioxidants to the diet (BHA, BHT, and ethoxyquin).

• Enzymes Enzyme supplementation can improve nutrient digestion and reduce metabolic heat. There are many commercially available cereal-based enzymes.

Such enzymes attack nonstarch polysaccharides or NSPs. Most of the NSPs are in the cell walls of cereal grains such as wheat, corn, oats, and even soybeans and include xylans, betaglucans, and mannans. During hot weather, some nutritionists have had success using enzymes that target all three NSPs. Supporting feed digestion will lower heat production. Depending upon the enzymes available in specific regions, more than one

enzyme product may be needed to target different NSPs. • Feed formulation and feed quality Feed can be formulated to help alleviate the effect of heat stress. The partial replacement of energy sources from carbohydrates to lipids is a common practice because lipids generate a lower heat increment than carbohydrates. Lipids also have the benefit of slowing feed passage in the gut, giving more time for nutrient digestion. The selection of quality ingredients containing a high ratio between net energy and metabolizable energy (NE/ME) is another option to reduce metabolic heat production.

Feed quality is another consideration to alleviate heat stress in broilers. Generally, broilers generate more heat and use higher energy for their eating activity when given mash feed compared to pelleted feed. So, good pellet quality can alleviate heat stress by reducing energy used during eating. Normally, fine pellets (less than 1,000 um) should not compose more than 10 percent to 15 percent of the diet. The

pellet durability index should be higher than 95 percent.

• Other nutritional approaches There are other feed additives that can reduce the impact of heat stress. Betaine is a methyl donor and can improve growth performance and meat quality.

The supplementation of betaine at 1,000 to 2,000 mg/Kg feed improved feed intake and growth in heat-stressed birds.

Probiotics and prebiotics are feed additives that can elevate gut health impaired by heat exposure. This will result in improved broiler growth performance. Phytogenic compounds such as sanguinarine and curcumin were also reported to help manage heat stress conditions due to their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Evaluate any feed additive thoroughly before using it as a part of normal formulation.

• Water management Water plays many physiological roles in broilers. During heat stress, water is lost through the respiratory tract during periods of panting. In response, water intake is increased in broilers as

a means of maintaining thermoregulatory. Water management during heat exposure is very important to reduce heat stress.

Electrolytes and vitamins can be added into the drinking water, including sodium bicarbonate, potassium chloride, and vitamin C. However, the addition of electrolytes via drinking water should be monitored to prevent wet litter conditions and biofilms in the water system. It is very important to monitor the temperature of the drinking water and keep it below 25 degrees C in hot environments.

Heat stress can cause issues for broiler performance and meat quality, particularly in tropical areas. Nutrition and feed quality are partial strategies to alleviate the negative effects of heat stress. Farm management is also an important key to alleviating this issue. In total, heat stress must be addressed by a collective effort of management and nutrition.

N ational Broiler Market: (Dec. 6): Whole broiler/fryer prices were trending steady for all sizes.

Supplies were moderate for current needs. Demand into all channels remained light. Processing schedules were normal. Floor stocks were sufficient. Market activity was slow to moderate. In the parts structure, prices were steady to weak for dark meat items and wings, steady on the balance of parts. Supplies ranged moderate to heavy, with larger size boneless/ skinless breasts slow to clear. Demand was light for all parts. Market activity was slow. In production areas, live supplies were moderate.

Weights were mixed, but mostly desirable, the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service reports.

Egg Markets

Retail chicken report (Dec. 2): Bagged fryers rose slightly in price and volume. Cornish and roasters took a break. B/S breast returned in force; prices were higher. Split breast volumes were up but prices didn’t follow suit, regular packs were the best option. Leg quarters, drums and thighs feeling a price increase was warranted. IQF parts pushed on B/S breast.

The deli offered finger foods for this week after the kitchen cools off at home after the Thanksgiving holiday. Specialty items stepped up after the holiday, but organics waited for first-of-the-month money. Retailers settled into a near normal plan of attack for consumer dollars. Seasonal items took a back seat and awaited the last big push for the year.
