UGA celebrates completion of Poultry Science Building COVER STORY DAVID B. STRICKLAND

PT Poultry Times Editor dstrickland@poultrytimes.com ATHENS, Ga. — The University of Georgia’s Department of Poultry Science has begun to set up its residence on campus at its new Poultry Science Building, which boasts more than 70,000 square feet of state-of-the-art research and instructional space.

A dedication ceremony was held at the new location on Oct. 6, where several university and state officials cut the ribbon for the department’s new home. Construction of the $54.1 million building was made possible through state, university, and private donations.

“The University of Georgia is a land-grant institution that serves our entire state through teaching, research, and service,” University of Georgia President Jere W. Morehead said. “And UGA’s strong relationship with the poultry industry exemplifies this land-grant mission.”

“Three out of four Georgia counties are involved in poultry and egg production generating an annual economic impact for the state of Georgia of more than $28 billion,” he added. “All of these Georgia producers benefit from the vaccines and therapeutics created from UGA faculty research, as well as other advances we are making in genetics, nutrition, production management, and other areas.”

Students will begin in the new building in January. Morehead noted the value that students will receive with the new facility.

“UGA students graduate ready to contribute to the poultry industry,” he said. “As producers, breeders, managers, veterinarians, and

Morehead added that the new Poultry Science Building, “that we are dedicating today represents what is possible when private donors and government, industry, and university leaders all work together to advance agriculture and higher education in our state. We are very grateful to (Georgia) Gov. Brian Kemp and the Georgia General Assembly for approving state funds to support this $54 million project.”

Morehead also thanked all of the private, individual and corporate donors who contributed to the new building.

“Your belief in the University of Georgia’s mission and your investment in this new facility were critical to the project’s success,” he said. “We would not be here without your support, so thank you for helping solidify UGA’s position as a global leader in poultry science and

New Farm Bill for this year ‘past expiration date’

GAINESVILLE, Ga. —A new Farm Bill due for this year passed its expiration date for passage on Sept.

30, 2023.

Holland and Knight said the Farm Bill, “is the single largest financial commitment that the U.S. government makes to U.S. food and agriculture producers, providing nutrition assistance, crop subsidies, crop insurance, rural broadband internet deployment and a range of other programs and initiatives. The Farm Bill is an omnibus, multiyear law that allows policymakers to set priorities for food and agriculture sector for a period, usually every five years.”

The bill is renewed every five years. Both houses of congress have not discussed any provisional extension to continue writing the final text of the Farm Bill. Also, Congress has not released any draft of a new Farm Bill. Republicans and Democrats are clashing as to what the Farm Bill should contain.

Senate Democrats want to address climate change

issues in the new bill and see the Inflation Reduction Act as means to fund these projects. Other senators are seeking funding for some agricultural products, however, finding the money to support these ambitions is difficult.

Before former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was ousted from his post, there was no proposal to extend the 2018 Farm Bill. When asked about the expiration of the Farm Bill, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said, “We will figure it out.”

“The committee is continuing to work toward a bipartisan bill that can be signed into law by the end of the calendar year. It is not uncommon for Congress to pass the September 30 deadline without passing an extension of the Farm Bill,” Senate Agriculture Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) said. “This is what happened in 2018, when Congress did not pass an extension, and the Farm Bill was signed into law in December.”

According to Holland and Knight “the House and Senate Agriculture Committees each must draft, amend and vote on their own versions of the Farm Bill, which are then reconciled before POULTRY TIMES

being voted on in final form. Once passed, the bill is sent to the president for signature, allowing the USDA to begin implementation.”

Holland and Knight added that the first Farm Bill was signed into law in 1933 to aid the markets that had collapsed during the Great Depression. Also, to support the agricultural sector that had been wiped out by the Dust Bowl. To begin with, the Farm Bill mainly supported growers of corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton, rice, peanuts, dairy and sugar. In 1973, Congress approved a Nutrition Title the Farm Bill. In present day, Farm Bills are mostly contained of Nutrition Assistance, and it tallies for three quarters of expenses.

“Each Farm Bill is different but recent farm bills have faced legislative hurdles for enactment from insufficient passage votes to presidential vetoes,” Tyler Wenzlaff, director of national affairs for Wisconsin Farm Bureau, said. “Extensions are sometimes needed to make it to the finish line.

The 2002 Farm Bill was the last Farm Bill to be enacted before its fiscal year expiration. The 2008 and 2014 Farm Bills were each enacted during extensions of the previous Farm Bill.”

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — Gold Creek Foods is making its mark in the “Poultry Capital of the World” in the former Peach State Bank and Trust building. The ribbon cutting ceremony took place Oct. 6, with remarks from Mark Sosebee, Gold Creek CEO. The bank’s architecture is iconic in Gainesville, Ga., with its prominent location and distinctive red brick and white columns. The bank has a new, sleek design and will become the headquarters for leadership staff and front office employees for Gold Creek Foods.

Even the drive-through teller and bank vault has been made into an office space. Sosebee noted that they have made Gold Creek Foods into one of the top poultry processors in Georgia and the United States.

He said “in our earliest days, before we were called Gold Creek Foods, we had office space in Gainesville, so this is like a homecoming for us. We’re proud of the investment we’re making in this headquarters because it means so much to our team and to our community.”

Gold Creek, in a release, gave some insight as to how the Peach State Bank and Trust building was transformed into a headquarters for Gold Creek Foods. Joe Mattocks and Shonda Sosebee worked alongside Caroll Daniel Construction. Carroll Daniel is a general contractor located in Gainesville. They added more breakrooms and bathrooms. On the first floor, there is an oval meeting room. The office space has a clear glass exterior. However, if a meeting is taking place, the clear glass can turn into frosted glass with the press of a button to ensure privacy

Approximately 60 employees will occupy this building of 18,882 square feet. Mattocks, Gold Creek board member, explained that 46 employees will move in and will use 75 percent of the building. He suggested that it leaves room for growth and touch down desks for individuals to alternate, such as sales workers.

Sosebee founded Gold Creek Foods in 2000. The company notes that it is, “Focused on quality and innovation, Gold Creek Foods utilizes world-class technology, feedback from our trusted partners and the dedication of our employees to continuously improve and deliver on our promise to our customers. Gold Creek Foods specializes in raw processing to fully cooked products for many industry leaders, national accounts, foodservice, and retail chains.”

Sosebee’s mother worked in Dawson County, Ga., for a clothing company that made Boy Scout Uniforms called “Sweet Orr.” She began working at the establishment after she graduated from high school POULTRY TIMES

in the 1960s. In 2003, her son bought the property of Sweet Orr to start Gold Creek Foods first processing plant.

Sosebee, on looking back on the successes that Gold Creek Foods has seen, he notes that he was proud that the company had southern roots in Georgia and the legacy that it will leave in the south.

“I’m so proud of the company we’ve built,” Sosebee said. “Not only do we have multiple poultry processing facilities across Georgia, we’ve also grown across state lines into Tennessee. We know this new headquarters will continue to inspire our team to be the best at what we do.”

Gold Creek Foods adds in its release that it, “began its journey in Gainesville over two decades ago in 2000 and by 2004, had already grown to 250 employees. Today, the company has a workforce of almost 4,000 team members, up dramatically from 2,300 in 2021. This 1,500 percent increase in just under 20 years ranks the company among North Georgia’s top employers.”

Obituary Mike Deal ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Michael Deal, 73, of Alpharetta, Ga., passed away on Sept. 16, 2023. Mr. Deal was born Jan. 25, 1950, in Toccoa, Ga., and was the eldest of six children.

Deal’s father’s Big A Feed Store is noted as being an influence for his career at Agri-Associates where he was an executive recruiter for agricultural companies.

Mr. Deal was a marketing degree graduate from the University of Georgia and was an active alumnus. He served as president of the house corporation for UGA’s chapter of Delta Tau Delta’s for 40 years; and was also a season ticket for the Georgia Bulldogs for more than 30 years. Mr. Deal rarely missed a

home game to cheer on the “Dawgs.”

Mr. Deal was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Roswell, Ga., since the 1980s. He was an ordained deacon and volunteered many years with the church’s Vacation Bible School. He was also very involved with the Wednesday night Children’s Missions Ministry as its director of the elementaryaged boys Royal Ambassador program for more than 20 years.

Mr. Deal was also an avid fisherman and was the Roswell Bass Club’s treasurer.

Mr. Deal is survived by his wife, Debbie, their daughter Sarah; his brother, Jeffery Deal; and sisters Kelly Adam and Karen Deal Meiners.

Massey, a UGA alumnus and president emeritus of the Georgia Poultry Federation, has a student classroom named in his honor.

“I am proud to announce today that a state-of-the-art classroom in the new Poultry Science Building has been named the Abit Massey Classroom in honor of Abit’s love for UGA and the many students he has mentored and supported over the years,” Morehead said.

UGA senior poultry science major Sage Barlow also noted the new opportunities for students.

“This gorgeous, new Poultry Science Building will be a home away from home for many of us here,” Barlow said. “It will be a place of learning and discovery, a place where students spend long hours studying and conducting research to advance the industry, and a place that brings together members of the agriculture community and our department.”

University officials noted that they are looking toward the future and toward the many possibilities that this new facility will provide.

“At UGA, we have been conducting transformational poultry research, instruction and Extension outreach for decades — research that has changed the way the poultry industry operates, instruction that equips the next generation of leaders like Sage, and outreach that supports industry and producers at all levels, from the individual to

IR Hopper Sensor Cumberland Cumberland is introducing a new IR Hopper Sensor that uses infrared sensing to help poultry producers better manage their feed hopper levels. This is accomplished by having an adjustable sensor in the hopper, which gives the producer more control of how they want to run their feed system. When feed drops below a sensor, a programmable timer enables a delay between 10 and 180 seconds.

The hopper fill system starts when any IR sensor detects an absence of feed, and the time delay has finished.

“By adjusting the IR sensor height and time delay, producers can lessen cycle time, decrease feed outage and reduce the potential for overflow,” said Ken Evans, product manager for Cumberland. “The big win here for a producer is having the dependable IR sensor down low in the last hopper with the ability to make adjustments so there is always enough room in the last hopper for overflow feed from the fill system.” He noted the sensor’s 12-inch height adjustment and 360-degree rotation provide optimal feed detection. It is the third recombinant vector vaccine from Zoetis, following the introduction of Poulvac Procerta HVT-ND in 2020 and Poulvac Procerta HVT-IBD in 2021.

When developing the vaccine, Zoetis scientists started by constructing 43 recombinant prototypes, which were then subjected to rigorous, controlled studies to find the one that provided the best, early immunity. The candidate that was finally selected is the vaccine that is now Poulvac Procerta HVT-IBD-ND. Protection in birds that received the trivalent vaccine in ovo was 90 percent following intraocular challenge with a virulent infectious bursal disease (IBD) virus at 14 and 21 days of age, Rong said.

The vaccine also proved effective against velogenic Newcastle disease (ND) following in ovo administration, providing 75 percent protection after a challenge at 14 days of age and 95 percent protection after challenge at 21 days of age. When birds that received Poulvac Procerta HVT-IBDND were challenged at 63 days of age with virulent or very virulent IBD or velogenic ND viruses, 100 percent were protected, demonstrating the vaccine’s long duration of immunity, Rong said. Like the other HVT vector vaccines, Poulvac Procerta HVT-IBDND has an excellent safety profile and avoids reactions associated with live ND vaccines. It can be administered subcutaneously at hatch as well as in ovo, Rong added.

As chickens excrete nitrogen in their feces in the form of urea or uric acid, it mixes with moisture, bacteria and heat causing the release of ammonia. Research shows Essential Dry XP is able to reduce ammonia volatilization in poultry litter. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the release of ammonia from litter and showed Essential Dry XP was able to continuously reduce the rate of ammonia release by over 30 percent. In chicken houses, independent research demonstrated this combination of active ingredients reduced ammonia levels from 17.5 ppm to 2.5 ppm. Prolonged exposure of ammonia levels at 10-25 ppm can impair the health of both people and poultry. Even at low levels of 5-15 ppm, ammonia can reduce flock performance, impair immune function, increase risk of respiratory disease and result in more condemnations at processing. “Essential Dry XP helps control ammonia in three unique ways,” said Richard Lamb, biochemical engineer for Ralco. Yucca schidigera helps bind ammonia and can interfere with urea activity. DE helps neutralize ammonia, absorb moisture, bind mold and acts as a natural insect repellent.
