On the grill, beef prices are up, and chicken prices are down

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — It’s getting that time of year to start firing up the grill, but what will it cost this year to cook up your favorites?

It may very well be a mixed bag. In information released by Texas A&M University, Dr. David Anderson, a TAMU AgriLife Extension economist notes that some items like beef will cost more, but some features like chicken wings may cost less.

“It looks like we should be able to find some deals on chicken and pork for cookouts, but retail beef prices continue to stay high on most cuts,” Anderson said. “Even ground beef for hamburgers is a little higher this year compared to this time last year.”

He notes that lowered beef production is one reason for this increase in price for beef cuts, adding that beef production is down about 5 percent from last year’s record numbers.

“We’ve had a shrinking beef cattle herd the last few years, and so many cows and heifers went to market because of drought,” Anderson said. “Demand doesn’t seem to be slowing, which is contributing to higher retail prices.”

Prices that have been higher in recent years for chicken and pork have seen some leveling out this year.

“Overall, people are still buying, and prices aren’t high enough to change some habits that might make retailers drop prices on some items that are more in line with wholesale prices,” Anderson noted. “But those changes are never immediate, and the ups and downs in retail are hardly ever as dramatic as wholesale because stores don’t want to drive customers away with big price swings.”

In addressing some of the challenges being faced by the nation’s

meat industries, Bryan Burns, vice president and associate general counsel with the North American Meat Institute, spoke at a recent hearing of the House Agriculture Committee’s Subcommittee on Livestock, Dairy and Poultry.

“I want to emphasize that the industry is incredibly resilient, despite claims to the contrary,” Burns said. “Against challenges such as COVID, supply chain disruptions, labor availability, and the impact of drought, beef production set new records for four consecutive years from 2019 through 2022. Pork production has seen its highest fouryear totals over the same period.”

In its most recent “Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Outlook” report, the USDA’s Economic Research Service notes that beef prices for 2023 are projected to remain higher, pork prices are looking to be lower, and poultry are estimated to rise in the second quarter of this year and decrease in 2024 based on higher production.

“Typically, fed steer prices

climb higher in the spring as demand for slaughter-ready cattle increases from packers looking to fill orders for the impending grilling season,” ERS said. “This spring, reported fed steer prices … for the week ending April 16 set a record at $180.44 per cwt (hundred weight), and the month averaged $177 per cwt in April 2023, over $35 above April of last year. The strong move in cattle prices was likely supported by packers trying to fill orders at record wholesale beef prices for the month of April.”

The beef production outlook for 2023 is forecast at 26.9 billion pounds, after being increased by 146 million pounds, ERS reports.

For pork, the ERS notes that several factors are affecting prices, “... wholesale pork prices suggests that wholesale values in 2023 have reverted to a pre-COVID dynamic. Not only has the U.S. economy reopened — with COVID-related restrictions lifted and COVIDrelated government transfer payments suspended, factors likely

having effects on consumer buying behavior — but inflation is currently a significant factor in most family food budgets, causing tradeoffs and reductions that may not have existed as recently as 1 or 2 years ago. These factors have probably contributed to reduced pork demand, meaning that at almost any pork price, consumers choose to buy lower volumes of pork. Eventually, dynamic markets adjust so that the effects of lower consumer demand feedback to wholesalers who offer processors lower bids for pork, who in turn offer lower prices for hogs to producers.”

The total pork production for the year is forecast by the ERS to be 27.38 billion pounds, which is 1.4 percent more than last year’s production.

For broilers, “the national composite wholesale broiler price averaged $1.40.15 per pound in April,” ERS said. “This is down 27 cents from last April but up 10 cents from March. While less steep than last year’s increase, the increase follows seasonal expectations.”

“The projected second quarter average price was adjusted up to $1.42 per pound on recent data and expectations of a seasonal demand increase,” the report said. “With the third and fourth quarter price forecasts unchanged at $1.30 per pound, the annual average projection for 2023 is $1.31.6 per pound. In 2024, the first quarter projected price is $1.27 per pound, with an annual average forecast of $1.29. This is down slightly from 2023, reflecting expectations of increased production.”

In the parts structure, the USDA adds that the lowest wholesale priced chicken parts are leg quarters, as well as legs, drumsticks, and bone-in thighs.

For 2023, ERS is projecting broiler production to be 47.048 billion pounds, which is 1.8 percent more than in 2022.

Poultry biosecurity: managing wild animal access to farms

This is the second in a series from Poultry Times regarding the importance of biosecurity. This article focuses on the importance of keeping wild birds and wild animals away from farms.

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — Biosecurity is important to maintain on farms and other poultry facilities to protect the health of the animals and the health of the farmers or employees of facilities. The United States food chain is dependent on proper biosecurity measures. If biosecurity is not maintained on farms, the risk of illness becomes higher, and the food chain could be greatly affected.

The USDA has partnered with state and local governments, along with industry experts to aid poultry producers in surveillance, reporting and control of illness,

especially avian influenza.

For farmers, wild animals are an issue because they can carry diseases or destroy the ecosystem of the farm. The USDA gives some tips on their website of how to manage wildlife on a farm.

• Closing off access to barns and other structures

Wildlife may gain access to barns or silos because they need a place to nest, sleep or find protection. The USDA recommends that a farmer should inspect the structures on a farm. The way a structure is constructed can attract or deter wildlife. According to the USDA, shelters with overhangs and long eaves attract wild birds to nest.

Also, wild birds will nest on shelters with top-vein ventilation, roof-top vents, and constructions with overhead wires. If these birds nest on these particular structures, their fecal matter may drop inside the barn. Therefore, contaminat-

ing what is on the inside of the barn. The USDA said farmers can check for feces by looking for whitewash on the ground, in the rafters or in the eaves.

The USDA suggests that farmers plug holes and burrows. Rodents and wild birds such as European starlings will seek refuge in holes. It is also recommended that farmers check door openings and the screens in doors for holes that might attract small wildlife. Some ways to repair or prevent small animals from getting into structures are to build concrete aprons around side walls of the structure. Another way is to fill burrows, tunnels and holes is to fill them up with gravel.

The USDA urges farmers to set up barriers and netting to keep wild birds from nesting in rafters, ledges and eaves. Nylon netting should be secured on all sides and properly maintained. A farmer can use 10- or 12-gauge mesh with 1-inch openings. The

openings will guarantee that no small animals will gain access to the structure. Exclusion netting is also beneficial for small animals because they have a safe place to nest. Before putting up the net, a farmer must be sure to remove the existing nests. If a bird successfully built their nest and abstained from harm, they are more likely to return to that nest. When removing the nest, a farmer needs to follow federal and state regulations. Additionally, farmers can use repellant gel or bird spikes.

• Decreasing water access

The USDA says that waterfowl use water to drink and to eat. The agency recommends that farmers should remove standing water around their farms. Small puddles, especially puddles found in tire ruts, can also attract water animals. Farmers can grade their land to minimize standing water. The USDA proposes that farmers create a minimum slope of half an inch per foot. Farmers should

nath morris to lead u.s. Poultry & egg association

TUCKER, Ga. — Nath Morris has been named the next president of U.S. Poultry & Egg Association (USPOULTRY) by the Board of Directors. He will succeed John Starkey, who will retire in August.

Starkey will remain as advisor through the end of the year. Morris has been serving as executive vice president-expo at USPOULTRY. He managed the International Poultry Expo (IPE), part of the International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE) and recognized by Trade Show Executive magazine as the 22nd largest U.S. trade show. He has been on the USPOULTRY staff since 2014.

Growing up in a poultry family in Georgia, both Morris’ father Dale and grandfather Dank had distinguished industry careers. Morris also has an extensive background in the poultry industry. Prior to joining USPOULTRY staff, he had been U.S. sales manager at Perdue Farms/Heritage Breeders, territory manager at Arbor Acres Farms/Aviagen, territory manager at Meyn USA, and QA manager at Seaboard Farms of Athens. During his industry career, Morris was also involved as a volunteer in USPOULTRY programs, including participating for many years in the association’s annual Hatchery-

Breeder Clinic. Morris has also been active in his community, including serving as a member of the Hall County Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the Hall County Board of Education, president of the Georgia School Board Association executive committee, and member of the Administrative Board of the First United Methodist Church. He received a B.S. degree in poultry science at the University of Georgia.

“I am happy to be a part of U.S. Poultry & Egg Association,” Morris said. “And I am excited about serving as president of such a great organization and look forward to

advancing our legacy as the AllFeather organization serving the poultry and egg industry in so many areas. USPOULTRY is the industry’s largest and most dynamic organization, and we will keep building on that tradition,” he added.

USPOULTRY Chairman Jarod Morrison, Farbest Foods, added, “Nath’s experience in the industry, along with his leadership and management of the massive IPPE and familiarity with our other programs, will be a tremendous asset as U.S. Poultry & Egg Association continues to help shape the future of the poultry and egg industry.”

watch their land 24 hours after rainfall to see where standing water may develop.

Standing water can be inevitable, and it is important that employees do not tread or move equipment in that vicinity. If employees do walk or move equipment in that area, there is a greater chance that the employee’s shoes or the equipment will become contaminated.

The USDA advises that farmers check ponds and basins to make sure they are properly managed. Wild animals are drawn to ponds, catchment basins and irrigation systems. To decrease the number of wild animals around ponds, farmers can cut down or remove plants from the banks.

Sometimes farmers will need a permit to remove plants around their ponds. Farmers can contact a wildlife professional to determine the correct process to remove plants and to make sure everything is being done in accordance with the Clean Water Act. Although, removing the plants will not be beneficial for keeping geese off the property. Fencing can be used to split ponds or vegetation sections from poultry sources.

Another option is to grid ponds with wires or ropes to deter wild waterbirds from landing in the water. A farmer can put deterrents on the water such as boats, decoys, or deterrent balls on the pond. It is important to mix up the decoys often, so the wild animals don’t become used to them.

The USDA tells farmers to filter their surface water. The highly contagious avian influenza virus can contaminate surface water, therefore causing it to spread. The USDA warns against using surface water that is untreated to clean poultry equipment, sheds, or other structures. If surface water is used, treat and test the water regularly to be sure it is not contaminated. Moreover, a farmer could install a filtration system.

• Safeguarding food sources

All animals are drawn to any kind of food source, however, sometimes the food sources may be to close farms. Wildlife foods such as fruits, berries, grass, seeds, flowers and insects are some types of food that can be sought after on farms. Farmers should mow the grass often and eliminate any fallen fruit. The USDA says

the best height for grass is three inches or less. Farmers should also remove any fruit trees or shrubs that are in close proximity to poultry structures. These plants are to be three feet away from any structures. Long grass, weeds and shrubs cover up any natural food substances around poultry barns.

Do not feed any wildlife around buildings on or close to the farm; this includes around office buildings or houses. Bird seed, suet and corn can attract mice, rats, and wild birds.

The USDA advises covering stored feed. Feed arrangements should be on a pad. Any kind of feed can draw in wildlife, so it a pad will make cleanup much easier and deter wild animals. Small spills of feed can still attract small animals like rodents. Farmers should keep cleaning supplies such a broom close by in case of spillage and keeping food structures properly maintained.

In the maintenance of feed structures, a farmer should check the pipes. Elements like whitewash, fecal matter or tracks are an indication that wildlife has been around the food structures. Damage to feed structures such

as chewing or scratching is another indication that wildlife has been present. The USDA urges that waste be disposed of appropriately. Popular techniques of disposing waste are incineration, composting, as well as putting the waste into dumpsters or rendering.

However, these techniques can draw in wildlife. It is crucial to look for signs of wildlife getting waste by checking for digging in compost piles, digging in carcasses and whitewash. It is essential to cover up any waste. Covering up waste must be done every time a waste container is opened. Covering up waste at the end of the day or every other day will not prevent wildlife from trying to get into it. This will keep out gulls, crows, ravens, vultures, and eagles.

Keep waste containers latched to prevent raccoons, feral cats, rats and mice from getting into trash. Carcasses that are going to be incinerated and molded or clumped feed can be maintained by keeping the disposal container covered.

The USDA urges farmers not to compost or dispose of spoiled feed on the farm. Freezers can be used to keep wildlife out of waste as well.

donor support helps student get into her ‘dream program’

The UNIVeRSITY OF GeORGIA

ATHENS, Ga. — Emily Edelman’s acceptance to the University of Georgia was a dream come true.

“If you grew up in Georgia like I did, you know UGA is where everyone wants to go. It’s on everyone’s list,” Edelman said. “And when I got in, I also got into my dream program—poultry science.”

Edelman grew up showing livestock — pigs, goats and a dairy heifer — and that early experience with the Future Farmers of America (FFA) provided a foundation

for her career.

“Showing livestock has a lot of challenges,” she said. “It teaches you responsibility and resource management, and it’s what got me interested in a career in animal science. In the end, it’s all about feeding the world, honestly, and that’s what I want to do.”

Through FFA, Edelman met UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences outreach coordinator Jessica Fife and learned about the college’s poultry science program. She visited Ath-

ens to tour the department, and she quickly fell in love with the program and with campus.

Edelman graduated in May 2023 with a bachelor’s in poultry science and minor in animal science, and she plans to pursue a career in poultry quality assurance.

As a student, Edelman did her part to build campus community through her role as an Avian Ambassador and secretary of the poultry science club.

“As an Avian Ambassador, we get to recruit people into the poul-

try department and help them figure out their best path,” she said. “And it’s just a great opportunity to help others figure out what they want to do and to see how poultry and our department can fit their needs. It’s also how I was recruited into the program, so it has come full circle.”

She also sees younger students excel, which is a gratifying experience.

“In the poultry science club, I got to see a bunch of freshman grow throughout the year,” she

said. “I’m toward the end of my time at UGA, and they’re just beginning, so it’s nice to use my position to encourage them. I can say, ‘You’re the next generation, you’re going to do great things.’ This role also helped me figure out that I wanted to do quality assurance because it’s such a helpful role in the process.”

Edelman is also part of the horticulture club, crochet and knitting club and open improv. These extracurricular activities, she said, supported a well-rounded experience on campus.

“I always encourage other students that if they have other interests, explore that. You don’t have to only follow professional pursuits,” she said.

Her involvement across campus has been possible thanks to the Georgia Commitment Scholarship (GCS) Program (https://give. uga.edu/georgia-commitment/). This need-based scholarship pro-

gram is open to first-year students and can be renewed for four years, offering support throughout their undergraduate experience.

The GCS Program has created over 680 student scholarships and committed over $100 million toward need-based awards.

“Honestly, I’m paying for my education fully,” Edelman said.

“My mother is a single mother with two children in college, and this has been extremely helpful for me. Since my freshman year, I haven’t had to take out loans, and it has been a great way to get involved in the UGA community.”

Part of Edelman’s scholarship

was an additional stipend for her experiential learning, which is required for all UGA undergraduates. While she found a paid internship, this stipend helped with food, housing and more during the internship.

“It helped take a huge weight off of my shoulders,” she said. “I knew that if I found an unpaid internship that was the opportunity of a lifetime, this scholarship would have helped fund that experience.”

Edelman’s scholarship is supported by donors Kim (BBA ’89) and Richard Stamper (BBA`84), who make sure to stay connected to scholarship recipients.

“The Stampers have been really interested not just in my development, but in the development of all the students who receive one of their scholarships,” Edelman said.

“We get to meet up once a semester to talk about how our education is going and how we’re personally doing. They’ve been super proud of me and supportive of my going into poultry science and the poultry industry. It’s nice to know that if we ever need anything, they’re just a call away.”

birds comfortable going into an open nest to lay eggs. The larger nest holes and nest pads are inviting to the birds which helps prevent floor eggs and leads to greater output of high-quality eggs. Ventilation holes in the partitions help provide an ideal environment. An expeller pushes birds out when necessary to aid in keeping the nest pads clean and help prevent broodiness. The Liberty One, manufactured with steel, has legs that can be set at different heights, even having the nests sit directly on the floor. A 7° pitch on the nest floor gently rolls the eggs onto a belt. The large 12” belt provides ample space for the eggs helping to reduce cracking. An egg elevator collects eggs from any height belt and can be released at a predetermined height for manual collection or delivery to a cross conveyor. Nests can be placed directly on slats to be used in a more conventional barn. Or nests can be suspended from the ceiling, its height managed by a winching system. Winched system can be kept out of the way during rearing, and it makes for easy clean out. Give your birds a more inviting nest with the Liberty One Aviary Colony Nesting System.

Ceiling-suspended robot Cumberland

Cumberland, AGCO’s poultry production equipment brand, is introducing Scout, the world’s first ceilingsuspended robot system to continuously monitor broiler chickens and their poultry house environments to increase animal welfare as well as

farm productivity. “With Scout, producers can achieve better feed conversion, early disease detection and fine-tuning of climate control, resulting in reduced mortality and less condemnation numbers,” said Scott Becker, director of North America sales for Cumberland. The advanced robot uses a complete set of sensors to map key indicators that impact bird health and performance, including: Thermal comfort (temperature, relative humidity and air speed); Air quality (CO2 and ammonia); Light intensity; Sound levels; and bird distribution. Scout also classifies excrement for early disease detection 24 to 48 hours before producers may become aware of an issue. In addition, the technology identifies dead birds. Monitoring information is available to producers 24/7 from any device, including daily and weekly reports with maps of their entire house. Scout can send up to 15 different alerts to producers’ mobile phones to keep them informed when they’re away from the farm. “The consistent and accurate reports allow producers to identify and fix problems before they become a larger issue,” Becker said. Scout can be ordered through the Cumberland dealer network. 888-226-5800

IR Hopper Sensor

Cumberland

Cumberland is introducing a new IR Hopper Sensor that uses infrared sensing to help poultry producers better manage their feed hopper levels. This is accomplished by having an adjustable sensor in the hopper, which gives the producer more control of how they want to run their feed system. When feed drops below a sensor, a programmable timer enables a delay between 10 and 180 seconds. The hopper fill system starts when any IR sensor detects an absence of feed, and the time delay has finished. “By adjusting the IR sensor height and time delay, producers can lessen cycle time, decrease feed outage and reduce the potential for overflow,” said Ken Evans, product manager for Cumberland. “The big win here for a producer is having the dependable IR sensor down low in the last hopper with the ability to make adjustments so there is always enough room in the last hopper for overflow feed from the fill system.” He noted the sensor’s 12-inch height adjustment and 360-degree rotation provide optimal feed detection. The sensor is easy to install and maintain, with no moving parts to break or maintain, and uses the same technology as Cumberland’s

i-plus3 control pans. The versatile design also allows sensors to be easily moved between flocks. For more information about the new IR Hopper Sensor, producers can contact their Cumberland dealer or visit www. CumberlandPoultry.com.

version of the current systems on the market. The design of the chain, feed trough and corner wheels has been taken care of by Roxell’s feeding experts. The result is an innovative chain feeding system that improves and speeds up the feed intake of the hens and reduces residual feed. “It may be surprising that as a notorious pan-feed promoter, Roxell now also has a chain feeding system, but actually it’s a logical step,” said Frank Hartmann, marketing manager at Roxell. “We have been working hard on broadening the range for 10 years. The excellent performance of pan feeding systems is an indisputable advantage. However, those who opt for ease of use and visibility will find an excellent alternative in our chain feeding system. A chain feeding system therefore also belongs in a 360° product range. In short, today Roxell has a solution for every need.” New chain feeding system, robust and convenient. “The Fortena chain feeding system is not a copy,” said Inge Van Daele, product manager at Roxell. “Our systems are all innovative, durable and performant and this chain system is no different. Specifically, our feeding experts worked on the design of the chain,

feed trough and corner wheels. That is why the feed intake improves with Fortena and that is due to the greater ease with which hens eat. The feed remains intact better and the hens get to the feed more easily. Moreover, the new corner wheels require hardly any maintenance. Finally, we use high-quality materials and techniques to guarantee the longevity for which Roxell is known.”

Zoetis has expanded its poultry vaccine portfolio with the introduction of Poulvac® Procerta® HVT-IBDND, a recombinant vector vaccine that provides early, robust protection against Marek’s, infectious bursal and Newcastle disease viruses with one dose. “Poulvac Procerta HVT-IBD-ND is the culmination of meticulous research conducted by a team of our top molecular scientists using the most advanced technology available,” said Dr. Sing Rong, research director at Zoetis. “The vaccine has a unique construction and a strong promoter that helps boost immunogenicity — features that set it apart from other vaccines in the same category.” The backbone of the new, trivalent vaccine is avirulent herpesvirus of turkey (HVT), which replicates in chickens and is known to be a safe and effective vector for

delivering major avian antigens. It is the third recombinant vector vaccine from Zoetis, following the introduction of Poulvac Procerta HVT-ND in 2020 and Poulvac Procerta HVTIBD in 2021. When developing the vaccine, Zoetis scientists started by constructing 43 recombinant prototypes, which were then subjected to rigorous, controlled studies to find the one that provided the best, early immunity. The candidate that was finally selected is the vaccine that is now Poulvac Procerta HVT-IBDND. Protection in birds that received the trivalent vaccine in ovo was 90 percent following intraocular challenge with a virulent infectious bursal disease (IBD) virus at 14 and 21 days of age, Rong said. The vaccine also proved effective against velogenic Newcastle disease (ND) following in ovo administration, providing 75 percent protection after a challenge at 14 days of age and 95 percent protection after challenge at 21 days of age.

When birds that received Poulvac Procerta HVT-IBD-ND were challenged at 63 days of age with virulent or very virulent IBD or velogenic ND viruses, 100 percent were protected, demonstrating the vaccine’s long duration of immunity, Rong

said. Like the other HVT vector vaccines, Poulvac Procerta HVT-IBDND has an excellent safety profile and avoids reactions associated with live ND vaccines. It can be administered subcutaneously at hatch as well as in ovo, Rong added.

Feed additive

Amlan International

Calibrin®-Z, an efficacious, mineralbased feed additive offered by Amlan International, protects poultry and livestock from biotoxins that reduce performance and cause morbidity or mortality. Amlan International is the vertically integrated animal health business of Oil-Dri Corp. of America, a global manufacturer of sorbient minerals. Calibrin-Z features naturally occurring phyllosilicate layers with opal-CT lepspheres that, together with our proprietary thermal-processing method, promote the binding of multiple biotoxins. Independent laboratories have verified that Calibrin-Z effectively binds mycotoxins and bacterial exotoxins and endotoxins in vitro. Two broiler challenge studies were conducted evaluating the ability of Calibrin-Z versus competitor toxin binders containing various additional formulated additives to reduce the negative effects of both aflatoxin and fumonisin. Data from these studies indicates that including Calibrin-Z in a mycotoxin-contaminated diet, kept broiler feed conversion ratios equivalent to the unchallenged control group. Data from studies also indicated that including Calibrin-Z

mitigated reduced weight gain in broilers fed a mycotoxin-contaminated diet. Broilers fed Calibrin-Z performed better than those fed other commercially available products. www.amlan.com

Direct contact water heater

Ludell Mfg. Co.

The Direct Contact Water Heater (DCWH) from Ludell Manufacturing Co. (a division of Ellis Corp.) is

designed for energy efficiency, heating by a method different from that of a conventional boiler. Efficiencies up to 99 percent can be achieved and hot water provided instantaneously with this technology. A traditional boiler utilized boiler tubes within a pressure vessel and a heat exchanger to warm process water, while the DCWH’s design simplifies the energy heat transfer by placing the process water with the combustion source. That is, the process water is heated directly by the combustion exhaust of the natural/propane gas burner. Serving as the burner’s combustion exhaust path, the DCWH’s heating chamber is an upright cylinder. The burner is located about 1/3 of the way from the heater bottom, and directly above the heater storage sump, from which heated water is pumped. The burner is set back from the vertical heating chamber, which forms a combustion chamber, helping ensure complete fuel combustion prior to the heating energy entering the heater chamber. The upright heating chamber design incorporates four separate zones: the process water inlet zone, heat transfer media zone, burner combustion zone and hot water storage sump. Water to be heated enters the heater via a spray

nozzle. The nozzle creates a spray pattern, using customer supply pressure that matches the heater’s diameter. The water droplets descend, at atmospheric pressure, and become preheated due to surface contact with the heat transfer media. The media also helps contain thermal energy from the rising hot vapors created in the burner combustion zone. The small, preheated water droplets then descend and pass through the burner combustion zone, where the intense heat increases the water temperature to the preset level. The heater water droplets then fall and gather in the storage sump located below the burner. Once heated, the water is re-pressurized with a pump and delivered for process use, or it is delivered to a large hot-water storage tank for heavy demand usage.

non-destructive approach to testing and serves as a cost-effective, reliable alternative to more traditional leak detection methodologies, including water bath testing. “Package leaks can be detrimental to product quality because they can reduce shelf life and create the potential for food safety issues due to premature spoilage. However, these leaks are often undetectable to the naked eye or by traditional testing methods,” said Bill Burnard, business development manager with INFICON, package integrity and general vacuum. “Reliable leak detection equipment, like the Contura S400, can help meat and poultry manufacturers catch faulty packages before they reach the hands of the consumer, which ultimately can prevent costly recalls and protect brand reputation.” The Contura S400 is designed for a range of meat and poultry applications that include thermos-formed meal kits, flow wrapped breakfast sandwiches, vertical form filled and sealed chicken wings, vacuum packed bacon and more. To test for leaks, meat and poultry manufacturers simply place the package between two unique membranes that create a conformal vacuum chamber which is quickly

evacuated. The gas flows through any package leaks into the chamber where it causes an increase in pressure. INFICON’s patented high precision vacuum gauges measure this change to calculate the package’s leak rate and delivers results in seconds. Results are reported via an easy-to-read display screen. All results are reproducible.

Compost system

Farmer Automatic/Aggero

Aggero’s manufacturing history has roots in the egg industry. The earliest Compost-A-Matic, an in-vessel system to process organic waste, was developed in the 1980s out of a manure problem on a chicken farm in Statesboro, Ga. As a Farmer Automatic cage system distributor in the U.S., the company saw a constant need for waste management systems. Using our own Compost-A-Matic as a starting point, we created Aggero to design and manufacture the most efficient systems. Through the years, the company’s machines have gotten faster and smarter but the concept of how to process poultry manure has not changed. The Compost-A-Matic eliminates odors while converting

manure into a pathogen-free, weed seed-free organic product that will never revert to raw manure. This 45-day process produces a compost that is no longer a breeding source for insects and won’t chemically burn vegetation when used in agricultural applications. The CompostA-Matic can take in 100 cubic yards of new material every day, which is the output of roughly 500,000 birds. Fully automated and requiring minimal maintenance, it’s an ideal investment for a farm of any size. Made in America for three generations, Aggero’s compost turners have changed with the times, but our commitment to quality has not.

Litter spreader

Farmer Automatic/Aggero

The antibiotic-free movement is affecting the poultry market globally, and consequently, in-house composting is gaining traction. A cost-effective windrow process would allow more producers to conserve litter, manage waste, control pathogens, and reduce the use of antibiotics. As a poultry equipment manufacturer, we were constantly asked to modify our skid-steer windrow turner, the

CompostCat, to meet the task of broiler and turkey deep litter pasteurizing process. Now, Aggero presents a Compost Cat tuned to tackle the demands of the broiler industry, start to finish. Aggero began by examining the many issues that have been problematic to the concept of windrowing: vertical clearance under feed pans and water lines, hardpan density, litter depth, how quickly a house can be processed, and how to spread litter quick and level. Improvements include a higher horsepower engine and 50 percent more auger power. An aggressive auger design rapidly collects caked litter and shreds it into a windrow in minimal time. At more than 10 feet wide, the collector head creates two large windrows with fewer passes. Additional features specifically designed for the broiler house include side-conveyor and spreader disk add-ons that attach with a hook and pin system for quick set up. After two years of modifications and upgrades, Aggero’s concept has come to life as the BroilerCat.

Litter treatment

Ralco

Ralco has announced the expansion of its poultry line with Essential Dry XP, a litter treatment for targeted ammonia control. Essential Dry XP contains diatomaceous earth (DE), yucca schidigera and patented essential oils and is OMRI Listed® for organic production. “A key factor in developing Essential Dry XP was the industry need for a better, cost-effective way to manage ammonia levels from litter,” said Dr. Tim Broderick, poultry research & development manager for Ralco. “The unique formulation of Essential Dry XP allows us to reduce ammonia using multiple modes of action.” Ammonia is one of the most harmful gases released from poultry litter. As chickens excrete nitrogen in their feces in the form of urea or uric acid, it mixes with moisture, bacteria and heat causing the release of ammonia. Research shows Essential Dry XP is able to reduce ammonia volatilization in poultry litter. Experiments were conducted

to evaluate the release of ammonia from litter and showed Essential Dry XP was able to continuously reduce the rate of ammonia release by over 30 percent. In chicken houses, independent research demonstrated this combination of active ingredients reduced ammonia levels from 17.5 ppm to 2.5 ppm. Prolonged exposure of ammonia levels at 10-25 ppm can impair the health of both people and poultry. Even at low levels of 5-15 ppm, ammonia can reduce flock performance, impair immune function, increase risk of respiratory disease and result in more condemnations at processing. “Essential Dry XP helps control ammonia in three unique ways,” said Richard Lamb, biochemical engineer for Ralco. Yucca schidigera helps bind ammonia and can interfere with urea activity. DE helps neutralize ammonia, absorb moisture, bind mold and acts as a natural insect repellent. Essential oils help reduce pathogens which convert urea to ammonia using powerful antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. “Combined, these components can manage ammonia and moisture for improved litter quality and bird performance.”

Phytase enzymes

DuPont Nutrition & Biosciences has announced the launch of its novel phytase enzyme, Axtra® PHY GOLD. The enzyme offers superior performance compared to other phytases on the market, delivering greater feed cost savings to producers. Axtra® PHY GOLD will be available in the United States, Mexico and India and eventually worldwide, pending regulatory authorizations. Recent scientific studies demonstrate that Axtra® PHY GOLD’s ability to allow formulation of inorganic phosphate-free high phytate diets, improves sustainability of animal production. It also offers market-leading thermostability, proven to outperform other commercial phytases under a wide range of pelleting conditions, making it the natural choice for applications where pelleting performance is a primary concern. Phytate is the main storage form of phosphorus in all grains, which represents the basis of most plantbased diets used in animal production. Phytases are enzymes that help break down phytate, allowing better absorption of phosphate and reducing or removing the need for addition of phosphate supplements in poultry and

Page 22 | Poultry Times

pig diets. The ideal phytase needs to break down phytate as quickly as possible to reduce the phytate’s negative impact. This requires an enzyme that is highly active at the low pH in an animal’s upper digestive tract. Axtra® PHY GOLD has been developed with this in mind. “Most poultry and swine diets contain a phytase enzyme, which is an important contributor to the feed performance,” said Dr. Arno de Kreij, segment leader, DuPont Animal Nutrition. “DuPont is committed to continuously investing in and developing better solutions for animal producers, such as Axtra® PHY GOLD, that enable the industry to further optimize feed cost and meet the challenges faced during feed production, like environmental impact.”

Feed additive

PMI

PMI, the feed additive business of Land O’Lakes, introduces Supplant phytogenics feed additives for poultry and livestock. Supplant phytogenics harness plants’ ability to prompt specific physiological responses in the animal. As demonstrated by the first product, Supplant D, this targeted approach delivers consistent results for elevated performance.

“PMI is taking a novel approach to phytogenic feed additives by targeting responses in the animal,” says Dr. David Bravo, Land O’Lakes director of innovation and technology scouting. “This is more direct than the common approach of using phytogenics’ anti-microbial properties to impact gut bacteria. At PMI, we consider the unique production challenges for different species and life stages; we search for and identify the right phytogenic compound to assist the animal’s response.” Phytogenics are the key to animal responses. Plants contain compounds, or phytogenics, that elicit physiological responses in animals, called host-mediated responses. Birds and animals have receptors along their guts and throughout their bodies that interact with phytogenics. Each receptor prompts a certain biological function, such as digestive

Euthanizing system

Innovative Poultry Products

In response to the growing interest and concern about animal welfare, Innovative Poultry Products LLC has developed the Talon®, a poultry euthanizing system. The Talon® utilizes CO2 to euthanize the poultry that you need culled from your flock affectively and painlessly. No longer the need to “correctly” hold a bird and apply cervical dislocation. Simply place the bird into a bucket, push a button and let the Talon do its work. The Talon is a fully automated system. This assures farmers of a consistent and dependable process every time. The simple interface makes the Talon nearly fool proof, no matter who is running it. The Talon brings animal husbandry to a new level offering a quick, humane, and final method of euthanizing. It also gives both integrators and farmers the peace of mind that they are in compliance with, even exceeding, animal welfare standards. The Talon can be positioned near your poultry house service room where you bring your culls to be euthanized. Or, better yet, the Talon can mount onto the Poultry Hawk®, a track and trolley system that mounts in your poultry house. Ag insulation

Innovative Insulation Inc.

Ag-Barrier is a radiant barrier product that looks much like tri-ply. It’s an 8mm thick woven film with aluminum radiant barrier on one side and a white polypropylene on the other. Ag-Barrier has added UV and corrosion protection, so it can handle the harsh environments found in agricultural barns. Ag-Barrier comes in solid and perforated versions. In new construction, it is an excellent option as a drop ceiling material. It’s considered an upgrade over existing try-ply material used as a drop ceiling material or wrap because it blocks 95 percent of radiant heat from entering a confinement area. Its use in existing buildings can be beneficial as well. By adding Ag-Barrier as a poultry curtain, ceiling material or wall material, you get all the benefits of a radiant barrier while increasing the lifespan of the current insulation

installed. Many farms use fiberglass insulation in their roofs and walls. During a period of approximately five years, the fiberglass loses much of its efficiency. Instead of having to constantly put more insulation in, installing Ag-Barrier as part of a reflective insulation system drastically improves the efficiency of the insulation already installed by as much as 50 percent.

20-inch stir fan

Beesley International

Beesley International is adding a 20-inch stir fan to its cooling and ventilation products line, which is both larger and stronger than the 18-inch version. Air circulated by properly placed stir fans not only assists in keeping litter dry but also maintains a more even temperature throughout the house. Using stir fans in warmer months can reduce heat stress on birds and cut down on moisture. In colder months, fans can help eliminate cold spots and reduce heating costs. “Our 18-inch stir fans have been a really popular product among our poultry distributors since they were introduced in 2017,” said John Hill, general manager of Beesley International. “We’ve had several customers ask us about the next step for the line, so we’re really excited to introduce the 20-inch version as we head into fall and some cooler months.” The 20-inch stir fan features red square aluminum blades and a black wide-spaced guard along with a 251-watt motor. Both the fan housing and blades are powder-coated, and the motor features Japanese bearings, adding to the durability of the fan. Its airflow of 2870 CFM, certified by BESS Lab, exceeds the CFM of similarly styled fans, including both square and shaped-blade styles. The direct-drive design offers excellent energy efficiency and is easier to maintain. The fan includes a mounting bracket and a 6-foot power cord to make installation simple.

Dedicated drinkers

Ziggity Systems

Ziggity Systems pioneered the concept of dedicated, separate male and female drinker lines featuring Big Z Drinkers that deliver hygienic water without the need for bacterial laden catch cups. Just as the industry adopted the use of separate male feeding lines decades ago, many producers

today are realizing the advantages of separate male drinker lines as well. Male broiler breeder birds are much taller than their female counterparts and thus, to prevent water wastage during male drinking activity, the male drinker line height must be managed higher than the female drinker line. The dedicated female drinker line, managed lower for the appropriate height of the female, features a shielded drinker which inhibits the males using the female drinker. Ziggity Big Z and Big Z Shielded drinkers are engineered to meet the special needs of large, aggressive breeder birds. Broiler Breeder birds strike the drinkers more forcefully than broilers, which can lead to water spillage and drinkers that wear out too quickly. To solve these problems Big Z drinkers are much larger in size than conventional drinkers and feature heavy-duty drinker bodies and high-grade stainless-steel components for long life. Enclosed, hygienic drinker line systems featuring male and female drinkers ensure all birds have access to clean water while achieving the best opportunities for efficient drinking and less water wastage, leading to dry litter, dry slats, less ammonia, better environmental conditions, improved bird welfare and most importantly, better bird and egg production results.

Transparent pipe Ziggity Systems

Ziggity Systems Inc. has made it easy for poultry producers to monitor and improve the quality of the water in their drinker lines with the transparent pipe kit. The kit is easily retrofitted onto existing Ziggity drinker lines. Once installed, water in the drinker lines can be visually monitored for contaminants such as biofilm, sediment and trapped air. Ziggity Systems transparent pipe kit is an early warning indicator for: poor sanitation/biofilm, poor water filtration, trapped air, interventions that were not evenly dispersed or dissolved. With the transparent pipe kit, debris getting past an ineffective filter can be observed, alerting producers to inspect the filtration system. During the production cycle when interventions are required, the transparent pipe kit allows for visual inspection inside the drinker line to confirm that the intervening materials are fully dissolved and evenly dispersed –which allows the producer to correct problems and improve the efficacy of the intervention. The simple, easy-touse water management tool is unique

The transparent pipe kit can be installed directly out of the Ziggity regulator, directly into the Ziggity end assembly or any other location on the drinker line. They are available through authorized distributors of Ziggity products.

er and turkey programs, including NAE (No Antibiotics Ever), RWA (Raised Without Antibiotics) and allvegetable based diets. Studies show diets supplemented with VilliMax 70 resulted in higher concentrations of butyric acid in the ceca. Sodium butyrate also acts as an energy source for the epithelial cells lining the intestinal tract and plays a significant role in cell-to-cell communications that positively influence immune and digestive processes and improve nutrient absorption. “Supporting a healthy microbiome is important. Healthier birds result in better growth performance and improved feed conversion, thus optimizing production costs,” said Dr. Tom Frost, Director of Innovation and Applications with DSM. “The lauric acid component of the fat coating, its cost and consistency give VilliMax 70 a competitive advantage over other butyric acid products. It’s the most concentrated source of sodium butyrate available today. Its smaller particle size allows for better distribution in the feed.”

TCP Water Solution’s D-CalCifi is an effective and economical food grade water treatment formulated to tie up and sequester scale causing minerals such as calcium, iron and manganese keeping water lines, water valves, nipples and bell drinkers clean and functioning properly. No leaking drinkers mean dry litter, helping prevent flies, ammonia and sickness or disease. Dry litter means it takes less energy to move the litter and helps prevent belt tears and other equipment failures that are common with wet litter. D-CalCifi is injected directly into the incoming water line using a reliable and accurate metering system and injection pump system. This system ensures that the precise desired level of D-CalCifi is maintained with no over feeding or under feeding. Water can cause corrosion of metal surfaces. D-CalCifi helps to protect against corrosion by laying down a protective microscopic film on all surfaces. This film protects the water contact surfaces and helps to extend the life of drinkers and the plumbing distribution system.

Litter management

Priefert

Priefert’s Litter Saver provides poultry producers an efficient and economical way to manage their litter. Not only ill the Litter Saver allow you to create great litter conditions for your birds, but it will also save you money in cleanout expenses and shavings costs. The Litter Saver design allows you to clean up hard pan problems by having dry litter all the way to the house pad, and drier litter increases the “livability” percentage in houses. The skids of the Litter Saver are designed to penetrate litter and ride on top of the pad, for efficient cleaning every time that results in a smooth, soft, well-aerated surface. When attached to your tractor, the Litter Saver is offset to the right side, allowing you to reach all the way to the wall. With this machine, you will have less money in your equipment, less time in house

preparation, less maintenance, and you can clean houses in any weather condition. Priefert Litter Savers are “time tested - grower approved.”

Litter mgmt. services

Jones-Hamilton

As producers continue to battle rising feed costs, the impact of ammonia and tight profit margins, the JonesHamilton Agricultural Division is helping them strike back with litter management education and application services. For a nominal fee, Jones-Hamilton certified applicators work with producers to properly prepare their poultry houses and apply PLT®. “We have actually offered our application service since 2000, but as more and more growers shift from whole house clean-outs to ongoing litter management it has really grown in popularity,” said Blake Gibson, business development manager. “Producers understand the bottom-line impact proper litter management can make and they’re seeking out every resource to help

them improve. We’re renewing our education efforts to ensure they get the biggest bang for their buck.” The Jones-Hamilton application service and education tools, which include on-farm support, as well as online articles, are designed to maximize the effectiveness of PLT, thereby relieving that stress. Proper application and ammonia purge also maximizes the fuel savings related to PLT. “Showing producers how to prepare their houses and correctly applying PLT for them goes a long way toward efficient ammonia control and litter management,” Gibson said. 843-319-7791

N. fowl mite control

Car Mac Products

The Die No Mite Strip offers longterm protection from Northern fowl mites for commercial and free range layers, nesting breeder hens and roosters. Simple in its construction, the strip works entirely by contact with the birds. Elimination of just one stress cycle per year may yield a 1 percent increase in egg production. This could amount to recovery of more than $12,000 of lost profit per 100,000 hens per year. The Die No Mite Strip does not contaminate

the environment. Because of this, manure and litter are free of pesticide and can be used as a fertilizer or soil enhancer without fear of soil or ground water contamination. It’s also compatible with natural fly control. The strips are coated with permethrin, which was chosen because it has exhibited excellent control of Northern fowl mites. Permethrin is classified as a non-toxic, non-carcinogenic pesticide. Washing hands after handling and installing the strip is the recommended hygiene. Installation involves minimum time and labor. Simply install one Die No Mite Strip for up to five caged layers or nesting breeder hens and roosters for two years of continuous protection.

Light dimmer

Pro-Tech Inc.

The 2K GREEN RIMMIR-DIMMER by Pro-Tech Inc. is a 2,000 watt reverse phase light dimmer that is revolutionizing the dimming industry. Some of the very important advantages this dimmer has are: soft start every cycle, greater than 98 percent increased noise immunity, biofeedback, increased bulb life,

works with any type of bulb, and provides a better power factor. The Reverse Phase Technology allows the RIMMIR to soft start the bulbs every half cycle. The rapid switching (every 8.3 milliseconds) of the load on and off is what dims the bulb. Dimmable fluorescent bulbs have a range where they perform the best. It is a broader range with the RIMMIR, but at very low levels they may flicker or turn off with any dimmer. Longevity is reduced at this point. Biofeedback intelligently watches the bulbs and when the bulbs reach the point that the life of the bulb is impaired, the voltage is increased ever so slightly to maintain the bulb at its lowest intensity without endangering the life of the bulb.

Radiant brooder

Space Ray

Space-Ray has improved its popular radiant gas brooder Model SRB40 to provide increased corrosion resistance. Important changes include a new stainless steel burner (previously cast iron), stainless steel brackets, stainless steel gas lines and a new dual fuel gas regulator which enables the gas valve on the brooder to operate using either natural gas or propane gas. The new dual fuel gas valve is only available on direct spark ignition (DSI) models. This new feature eliminates the need for users to undergo the costly retrofit expense of changing the gas valve when switching from propane to natural gas or vice-versa. They only need to unscrew and flip the regulator and change the orifice to make the switch between propane and natural gas. The new SRB40CR series brooder is built to resist corrosion from humidity and ammonia, while providing lower maintenance, greater reliability and improved durability. The new stainless steel burner is designed to withstand the harsh, demanding conditions found in today’s poultry houses, and can also be disassembled for cleaning. The updated SRB40CR brooder also incorporates a new plastic box that houses the ignition control designed to protect the spark module and electrical connections from both moisture and dust. With Space-Ray’s Direct Spark Ignition (DSI) brooders, growers can now save up to 5.5 gallons of propane for each continuous 24-hour period in a house installed with 14 brooders when compared to models with pilot ignition. This economical operation, combined with the improved corrosion resistance, makes the SRB40

brooder a cost efficient and durable option.

Direct-drive fans

Chore-Time

Chore-Time has introduced directdrive models of its ENDURA® Fan. The new 57-inch direct-drive fans meet grower requests for low maintenance, while maximizing energy efficiency through variable-speed capabilities. With no belts, pulleys or bearings, the direct-drive motor eliminates the need for regular greasing, as well as other common maintenance needs on ventilation systems. For further reliability, the materials used in the proven ENDURA Fan design were strategically selected to provide corrosion resistance, high strength and maximum durability in both extreme high and extreme low temperatures. The direct-drive ENDURA Fans efficiently produce one of the highest airflow ratings in the industry. Variable speed functionality allows growers to achieve further energy savings by slowing the fan whenever the air flow requirements allow. Fan speed is controlled automatically by a CHORE-TRONICS® 3 Controller, in combination with a variable frequency drive. Even greater efficiency comes from the use of Chore-Time’s HYFLO® Shutters featured on the ENDURA Fans. HYFLO Shutters do not suffer the typical 12- to 15-percent loss of efficiency and air speed typical of dirty louver-style shutters, so air speed is maintained to the end of the flock, when it is needed most. HYFLO Shutters improve fan performance by minimizing obstructions during operation. A cable attachment helps maximize efficiency by allowing the HYFLO Doors to float left or right together. Other features of the direct-drive ENDURA Fans include a black, high-density polyethylene cone for light control and a long glass fiber composite shroud and HYFLO doors for durability. The units are engineered to have a slight downward tilt, making them self-draining. The new fans are available with a standard mount and can be installed 60 inches (152.4 cm) on center over 56.5-inch (143.5-cm) framed openings. They can also be retrofitted

Patty tray line

Dolco Packaging

Dolco Packaging, a Tekni-Plex busi-

ness, has launched a new line of processor-grade polystyrene (PS) trays specifically designed to market patties. Most trays currently in use for patties are multi-purpose, supermarket-grade, standard-sized rectangular trays. This means that oftentimes round patties will slide around, which can result in an unattractive presentation and misshapen product. Dolco’s new patty trays, which are available in 2-, 4- or 5-cell options, offer improved product display and enhanced performance attributes. The 4-cell patty tray is offered in two different depth options to accommodate retailer preferences. The 2- and 5-cell trays feature raised channels on the bottom that the patty sits on. The 4-cell deep and shallow trays are available with soaker pads. Both options are designed to keep patties dry and fresh, which positively impacts shelf life. The trays are available in both white and black.

Dolco’s thicker processor-grade PS patty trays are 30 percent stronger (due to tray weight) than its thinner supermarket-grade alternatives. This helps minimize cracking or folding. Further, the square shape of the 4-cell tray requires less film to

overwrap and takes up less space in the case, when compared to standard rectangular trays. The new patty trays are ideal for ready-to-cook premium products and blends (ground beef, poultry, specialty meats, salmon, crab cakes, portobello mushrooms etc.), which typically have a higher price point than bulk ground.

JBT Corp. has announced the expanded use of its Sterideal® Ohmic Heat Exchanger as an optimal solution for the precise heating and effective pasteurization of liquid eggs. Liquid eggs are a common and important resource in the restaurant and foodservice industry, offering speed and ease-of-use in a high-pressure environment. Typically available in flexible, plastic pouches ranging anywhere from 5 liters up to 1 ton, liquid eggs are widely available to the restaurant, catering and grocery retail industries worldwide. Despite their convenience and popularity, companies supplying liquid eggs face frequent challenges in the production process when the eggs experience unwanted coagulation. This results in clogged tubes and piping, which effectively shuts down processing lines for hours at a time as cleaning takes place. JBT’s Sterideal® Ohmic Heat Exchanger for liquid eggs offers the perfect solution: precise heating for effective pasteurization. This technology applies heat directly to the product, rather than relying on overheated water or steam, removing the presence of a hot surface in the heat exchanger. With the Ohmic system, JBT customers achieve a consistent temperature throughout the product, decreasing the likelihood of partial coagulation due to inconsistent heat being applied.

Feed additive

CBS Bio Platforms

At a time of high feed costs and feed price volatility presenting challenges for the poultry industry, help is on the way for nutritionists and producers from new feed science solutions rapidly gaining wider availability and adoption for 2022 and beyond. Leading the way is new protein-sparing technology featured in ProSparity, a feed additive product offered by CBS Bio Platforms. ProSparity added to livestock diets features two key advantages help poultry operations recapture dietary costs. First, it improves the breakdown of top ingredients such as soybean meal, corn, wheat, barley and more, so that a higher level of protein/nutritional value is captured by the animal – in essence, allowing farmers to get more return on investment out of every feed dollar spent on these ingredients. Second, it allows for the extraction of production sustaining levels of protein/nutritional value from alternative or ‘opportunity’ ingredients sources – allowing farmers to utilize less costly ingredient options without sacrificing results. The feed technology comprising ProSparity features protein-sparing enzyme technology powered by a multi-component pro-

Feed additive

Brookside Agra

Evonik

Evonik has developed science-based system solutions for the gut health of broiler chickens, laying hens and weaned to growing-finishing pigs. This integrated approach makes it possible to keep animals healthy without the use of antibiotics, and to produce meat and eggs in a sustainable and economically profitable manner. Evonik’s new system solutions for gut health include a tailored combination of its feeding concepts, amino acids, probiotics, services and consulting, depending on the individual needs and challenges of the customer. The approach means the customer receives better economic, animal welfare and sustainability results whatever their circumstances. “The challenges for farmers in increasing productivity while maintaining healthy animals are manifold and can only be overcome with comprehensive solutions,” says Dr. Torben Madsen, head of the Sustainable Healthy Nutrition product line at Evonik. “Our new gut health system solutions provide the basis for solving those challenges.” The intestinal microbiota, i.e., the totality of microorganisms in the digestive system, is at the center of the solution. Maintaining its sensitive balance depends on various factors. Among these, feeding is an important aspect that can stabilize or unbalance the microbiota. Environmental conditions such as heat stress or piglets at weaning from breast milk also impact the microbial balance. Ultimately, antibiotics or pathogens have an immediate effect on the microbiota. As a result, morphological and functional changes occur in the gut which negatively affect digestion and thus nutrient absorption. This leads to reduced animal growth or even increased mortality. “It is important to understand these complex gut systems and target them individually with the right solutions,” says Dr. Xu Wang, product manager for Gut Health Solutions at Evonik Animal

Inadequate ventilation in closed animal barns and housing facilities can often lead to pneumonia and respiratory illnesses in the animals and the humans who care for them. Ammonia build-up from waste is seldom noticed when the same person works in the same operation every day, but it can be a hidden killer and is often a major factor in reduced animal and human performance. “Producers often admit that they have a problem with ammonia, but seldom realize how great of a problem it is,” said Tim Nelson, vice president – Animal Health & Nutrition Sales at Brookside Agra. To control ammonia, offensive gasses and waste volume in animal housing, Brookside Agra recommends using its all-natural Ammocure specialty feed additive. Proven to reduce ammonia levels by up to 50 percent or more when added to feeds, Ammocure helps improve air quality, feed conversion and average daily gain, plus helps increase feed intake for better animal health and more comfortable working conditions for employees. The lower volume of waste solids also helps reduce the cost of handling liquid and solid manure. Made in the U.S., Ammocure is a specially formulated source of saponin, a natural wetting agent derived from the Yucca Schidigera plant. Non-toxic to all species and sizes of livestock, poultry and small animals when used as directed, all-natural Ammocure is available in a 15 percent meal, 30 percent powder, and 50 percent liquid formulation. “Ammocure Liquid is proven to control odors and reduce ammonia emissions from manure when added to feeds, while the powder and meal formulations are recommended to control waste volume, ammonia and offensive gasses produced by livestock. Ammocure Powder and Meal can also be used as a flavoring agent in commercial livestock feeds,” Nelson said. 402-560-7381

X-ray detection

Mettler-Toledo

Mettler-Toledo Product Inspection has launched its most advanced x-ray inspection technology to date, improving its ability to detect low density contaminants in packaged food products. The new technology will help food manufacturers avoid product recalls, reduce unnecessary product waste costs, and enhance product integrity and brand protection. New Mettler-Toledo DXD and DXD+ dual energy detector technology is optimized for identifying foreign bodies such as calcified bone, low-mineral glass, rubber and some plastics. These types of contaminants are traditionally hard to detect within the “cluttered” or “noisy” x-ray images generated by overlapping and multi-textured products such as packs of chicken breasts, sausages, and frozen potato-based goods. Such applications are a perfect match for DXD and DXD+ high-quality detector technology, in conjunction with new Mettler-Toledo Advanced Material Discrimination software tools. The software helps to separate and remove the prominent material of the food product within the x-ray image, revealing the presence of any lower density contaminants. As a result of the accuracy and reliability of DXD and DXD+ detection, food manufacturers can be more confident that their products are safe for consumers, and that they will benefit from reduced false reject rates and product waste, helping to deliver a fast return on investment.
