Burger King to acquire largest franchisee for approximately $1B

MIAMI — Burger King, the fifth largest fast-food chain in the world, has reached an agreement where the company, with its parent company Restaurant Brands International (RBI), will acquire its largest franchisee company, Carrols Restaurant Group for approximately $1 billion.

RBI and Burger King will be obtaining all the Carrols issued and outstanding shares that are not already held for $9.55 per share in an all-cash transaction, the companies announced.

Burger King has more than 19,000 locations in over 100 countries worldwide. Carrols operates 1,022 Burger King locations in 23 states in the U.S., which generated approximately $1.8 billion of system sales last year.

“Carrols has demonstrated strong and improving restaurant operations over the years,” Tom Curtis, president of Burger King U.S. and Canada, said in a statement. “This acquisition is an exciting accelerator to our ‘Reclaim the Flame’ plan that is focused on relentlessly pursuing a better experience for our guests. We are going to rapidly remodel these restaurants over the next five years or so and put them back into the hands of motivated, local franchisees to create amazing experiences for our guests.”

Burger King notes that its Reclaim the Flame initiative has planned many remodels follow-

ing a $400 million announced investment last year that it says it will put toward improving operations, enhancing marketing and technology and digital improvements.

On the Carrols acquisition, Josh Kobza, CEO of RBI, said, “This is a terrific example of our commitment to put our capital to work to accelerate growth and support Tom (Curtis) and his team in their broader efforts to have a more competitive Burger King restaurant base. The strategic merits of this acquisition are very compelling and consistent with our objective to invest our capital in long-term, high-return opportunities.”

Burger King added that it plans to increase its rate of remodels of Carrols locations, with a further investment of $500 million of capital, which will be funded by Carrol’s operating cash flow, to update about 600 of the acquired restaurant locations that the company states do not meet its “modern image.”

ability over the past 12 months,” Deborah Derby, Carrols president and CEO, said in a statement. “The results have allowed us, through this transaction, to deliver immediate and certain value to Carrols shareholders at an attractive premium to the company’s current and historical share prices.”

“Additionally, we believe our team members will now have additional opportunities as part of the greater RBI family — in 7

our office, in the field and especially in our restaurants, including for long-time managers who may want to become franchisees themselves,” Derby noted. “We look forward to working closely with Tom (Curtis) and the rest of the Burger King team in the months and years ahead.”

Subject to customary closing requirements, the companies expect this transaction to be completed in the second quarter of 2024.

An update on avian influenza and outbreaks around the world

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention website, there are two categories of avian influenza. One is called Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). The CDC says, “highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses cause severe disease and high mortality in infected poultry.”

The organization explained, “HPAI A(H5) or A(H7) virus infections can cause disease that affects multiple internal organs with mortality up to 90 percent to 100 percent in chickens, often within 48 hours. However, ducks can be infected without any signs of illness. HPAI A(H5) and A(H7) virus infections in poultry also can spill back into wild birds, resulting in further geographic spread of the virus as those birds migrate.

While some wild bird species can be infected with some HPAI A(H5) or A(H7) virus subtypes without appearing sick, other HPAI A(H5) and A(H7) virus subtypes can cause severe disease and mortality in some infected wild birds as well as in infected poultry.”

The other form of AI is called Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza (LPAI). CDC says, “Low pathogenic avian influenza viruses cause either no signs of disease or mild disease in chickens/poultry (such as ruffled feathers and a drop in egg production). Most avian influenza A viruses are low pathogenic and cause few signs of disease in infected wild birds.

In poultry, some low-pathogenic viruses can mutate into highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses.”

The CDC states there are four strains of avian flu called A, B, C and D. Wild aquatic birds and wild waterfowl are deemed to be hosts of the Type A virus. The Type A virus is separated into subtypes based on the protein the virus is

attached to. There are two proteins called hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). In total, there are 18 HA subtypes and 11 NA subtypes. For birds, there are 16 HA subtypes and nine NA subtypes. Many combinations of HA and NA proteins can be made.

The CDC gives an example of combinations, “an A(H7N2) virus designates an influenza A virus subtype that has an HA 7 protein and an NA 2 protein. Similarly, an “A(H5N1)” virus has an HA 5 protein and an NA 1 protein.”

The subtype of A(H17N10) and A(H18N11) has only been identified in bats.

Avian influenza has seen an increase in some areas around the globe. One of the more exotic regions the virus has seen a spread is in Antarctica. According to Reuters, penguins and seals have never been exposed to HPAI. Professionals are concerned about the effect it might have on the animals. The virus seems to be spreading to Bird Island. the British Overseas Territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. The H5 strain of the virus was found on the island and reported to the OFFLU. The OFFLU is part of the World Organization of Animal Health (WOAH) and United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). During the same time, the illness was found on the Falkland Islands.

In a report, an OFFLU official said “HPAI H5 virus is likely to spread further among Antarctic wildlife, potentially infecting the 48 species of birds and 26 species of marine mammals which inhabit this region. The negative impact of HPAI H5 on Antarctic wildlife could be immense, because their presence in dense colonies of up to thousands of pinnipeds (seals) and hundreds of thousands of birds facilitates virus transmission and may result in high mortality.” The official went on to say, “elephant seals in South Georgia could have been infected by migrating seals 8

from South America where there was a large die-off of the species.

Infected elephant seals could possibly transport the virus to neighboring islands and further south to the Antarctic Peninsula.

If HPAI H5 virus completes the above-suggested stage of spread, further virus spread in the Antarctic region is likely given the many avian and mammalian species that probably are susceptible to infection.”

According to the WOAH, South Korea saw 47 birds killed due to H5N6 and an estimated 510,810 birds were culled. The outbreaks began Dec. 5 and lasted until Dec. 11 in the Western parts of South Korea. Along with H5N6, South Korea saw the H5N1 strain which made its way to Japan and Cambodia. Cambodia and Japan never saw cases of the H5N6 strain.

H5N6 has only been found in Asian countries, the most recent epidemic was seen on a poultry farm in the Philippians in January 2022.

Researchers focusing on 6 unique strains of African swine fever PT

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — Along with the many other viruses the USDA follows, there is another virus that has the attention of agriculture producers around the world. The virus is called African swine fever (ASF). The USDA describes the virus as “a highly contagious and deadly viral disease affecting both domestic and feral swine of all ages.”

ASF is not spread to humans and is not a threat to food security. The virus is located in many countries such as the Dominican Republic, Haiti, China, Mongolia, Vietnam and the European Union. The United States has not had any cases of ASF. Symptoms of African swine fever is high fever, decreased appetite, weakness, skin lesions, red blotchy skin, loose stool, vomiting, difficulty breathing and coughing.

In November, the USDA Agricultural Research Service stated that researchers have recategorized and reduced the amount of virus strains from 25 to six genotypes. Since this development, scholars have found they can classify ASF virus isolates, and this will change the game for vaccine manufacturing.

Senior ARS scientist Douglas Gladue said, “previously, 25 different virus genotypes were identified across the globe. Our research team recently re-evaluated all the publicly available virus DNA sequence and found that the majority of genotypes (genetic makeup) originally identified as novel were not correctly identified nor compared to already existing ASFV virus genotypes. Based on this analysis, there are actually fewer unique genotypes than the ASF research community believed, and that means that there is less diversity of ASFV affecting communities across the globe. This information is important as it may reduce the number of vaccines previously thought to be needed to protect against all ASFV genotypes.”

For reducing the risk of ASF, and most other viruses, biosecurity remains a best line of defense. The USDA gives tips to protect swine from exposure, such as: • Update your biosecurity plan and start ongoing training for personnel Your site’s biosecurity manager is responsible for developing and updating an enhanced written biosecurity plan with the help of your herd veterinarian.

need to be trained themselves about biosecurity measures to keep the virus out.

• Restrict access to your production site Limit your site’s entry points and protect each with lockable gates. Lock buildings when no one is present.

Establish a perimeter buffer area (PBA) to serve as an outer barrier around buildings and limit movement of the virus near animals. Designate a clearly marked parking area outside the PBA. People and vehicles moving through PBA access points must follow cleaning, disinfection, and other biosecurity measures.

Create 1 or more line(s) of separation (LOS) as a control boundary to prevent movement of the virus into animal areas.

• Enhance employee biosecurity practices Limit access only to people who are essential to your production site.

Ensure everyone crossing the LOS arrives showered and wearing clean clothing and shoes.

All individuals crossing the LOS should sign an agreement to follow biosecurity plan rules.

Require those crossing a LOS access point to complete an entry logbook. Make sure that the logbook is monitored and information is maintained.

• Ensure strict protocols for animal movement Ensure pigs and semen, if applicable, come from documented sources and are verified as free of foreign animal diseases. Even then, no other animals can be introduced onto the site for at least 7 days before moving animals to another pork production site with susceptible animals.

Make sure animals leaving the production site can only move in 1 direction across any line of separation at a time. You must have a contingency plan for interrupted animal movement.

Clean and disinfect contaminated areas.

• Prevent feed contamination and control wildlife, rodents and flies Ensure grain and feed are delivered, stored, mixed, and fed in ways to prevent contamination. Clean up and dispose of feed spills immediately to discourage wildlife.

Make sure your facilities are designed to prevent all animals, including birds, from crossing into secure areas and contacting pigs.

Maintain those areas and ensure that everyone works to support the documented rodent and fly control programs.

• Put in place proper carcass disposal and manure management practices Dispose of dead animals so they don’t attract the attention of wildlife, rodents, and other scavengers.

Ensure rendering vehicles don’t enter the PBA. Manure should be removed to prevent exposure of your herd to disease agents. Plan where to store manure onsite if it cannot be moved offsite due to an outbreak.

The USDA also offers biosecurity statements to protect swine: 1. Limit on-farm traffic The fewer people and vehicles on the farm, the better.

2. Discuss prevention practices regularly Everyone needs to understand and follow the rules.

3. Shower-in/shower-out People can bring the virus onto your farm as it can live on clothing, shoes, and equipment.

Remove clothing and accessories on a designated dirty side and dress in laundered items on the clearly marked clean side before entering or exiting restricted animal areas.

4. Wear clean coveralls and boots at each site Because the virus can stay on clothing, this step limits disease spread for anyone moving between sites.

5. Don’t eat in animal areas The virus can survive for months in pork and pork products and be a source of spread. Keep all outside food products away from animals.

6. Wash all on-farm equipment and vehicles The virus can stay on vehicles and equipment.

Follow specific cleaning and disinfection protocols for all vehicles entering or leaving your site.

7. Ask visitors about recent international travel Don’t let anyone who has been in an African swine fever-affected country onto your farm for at least 5 days after returning to the United States.

WASHINGTON — Although net margins for the broiler industry have been generally positive in recent months, producers have reacted cautiously to this favorable market signal in terms of stepping-up production for several notable reasons. USDA estimates a less than one percent increase in broiler pounds in 2023 and a one-plus percent gain in 2024.

Certain analysts explain that the broiler industry now needs to recognize that it has moved into a mature business phase and future growth in broiler meat consumption is much more dependent on total population increases rather than rising per capita consumption gains. Other analysts argue quite the opposite, noting the innovative nature of chicken producers to create and market successful new products and find new outlets. This should not be underestimated.

An important aspect of production increases for the past several decades has been the continual shift toward larger birds for deboning. Much of the trend has been at the expense of the smallest size birds usually marketed for quick service cut-up and rotisserie. This development results in the reported average weight of broilers ratcheting-up year after year. USDA’s production data in recent months suggests this trend may be nearing a pause, or even more than a pause.

Optimism prevails that the next generation of broilers will begin to demonstrate an improved rate for the number of chicks per hundred eggs set.

And, of course, with no sacrifice for feed efficiency and related productivity.

Beef A significant decline has occurred in beef production and the trend downward is clearly slated for beef output for the next two years, according to USDA. This major event offers an opportunity for chicken.

When the bottom of the current beef cycle occurs, this depends less on cow/calf ranchers’ profits and feedlot favorable revenues and more on Mother Nature. Until drought conditions in cow/calf country are in the rearview mirror, cattle ranchers are going to continue to experience an extended period of sending more heifers and brood cows to slaughter.

provide much more favorable weather for pasture, range, and hay, cow/calf ranchers will begin to withhold heifers and cows from the marketplace.

During that time, beef supplies will tighten even further.

While the likely coming gap in competing meats should encourage consumers to give chicken more attention, innovating with tasty further processed products will be necessary to keep the consumption trend upward, both at retail grocery and foodservice.

As David Meloni with Datum FS said at the 2023 Chicken Market Summit, “I don’t know if the chicken industry has ever been in a better position to provide value to foodservice over the next 18 months.”

Highly pathogenic avian influenza HPAI has not gone away as a threat to poultry and egg operations. Although the disease has fallen more on turkey and layers, broiler and breeder

farmers are re-doubling their biosecurity measures to better ensure their flocks are protected.

With broiler supplies in close balance with demand, any major HPAI outbreak impacting this sector would further exacerbate market disruption.

There has been much debate in Washington and globally about vaccine use to help combat HPAI. Currently, the National Chicken Council does not support the use of a vaccine for HPAI for a variety of reasons – primarily due to exports and trade. Most countries, including the U.S., do not recognize countries that vaccinate as free of HPAI due to concerns that vaccines can mask the presence of the disease. Therefore, these countries do not accept exports from countries that vaccinate.

The U.S. broiler industry is the second largest exporter of chicken in the world, exporting about 17 percent of our chicken meat production valued at more than $5 billion annually. If the U.S. poultry and egg sector were to start vaccinating for HPAI, the broiler industry will lose most of our ability to export which will have a significant impact on the industry and the export losses would also have a devastating impact on thousands of growers.

Even if one sector (eggs, turkeys) moves forward with a vaccine, the broiler industry will be most significantly impacted as our trading partners view all poultry (egg layers, turkeys, broilers, ducks, etc.) the same.

In addition, a vaccine will not eliminate the virus. Birds can still contract HPAI and may not show signs of having the virus which allows the virus to replicate and spread (known as masking).

During the current outbreak, of the birds affected, about 73 percent have been commercial egg-laying birds, 18 percent turkeys and only six percent broilers and broiler breeders. The rest have been ducks, backyard chickens and game birds. So, the U.S. poultry sector that least needs a vaccine would have the most to risk from using one.

We support ongoing discussions about a vaccination program, and we support USDA’s policy of eradication. We believe

that, right now, this is the best approach to control and eliminate HPAI in the U.S.

program currently only compensates farmers whose flocks test positive, not those in the control area who are disallowed from placing flocks until the virus is contained, which sometimes takes months.

• Simplify the calculation of indemnity. The payments to farmers will be calculated based on the average income they earned from the last five flocks.

This method is more transparent and ensures that farmers will not face a cash shortfall in the face of an HPAI outbreak in their area.

The Healthy Poultry Assistance and Indemnification Act NCC is supporting legislation in Congress that would expand the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) compensation program to all poultry growers and layer operations within a highly pathogenic avian influenza control area, rather than only those whose flocks are infected.

Specifically, the HPAI Act, introduced by Senators Chris Coons (D-DE) and Roger Wicker (R-MS), would: • Expand USDA-APHIS compensation to all poultry farmers in an HPAI control area. The POULTRY TIMES

But overzealous and misguided regulations coming out of USDA threaten to take chicken off the plate for millions. The implementation of unsupported Salmonella regulations, the slowing down of production, or the threat of more frivolous lawsuits could all mean less (and thus more expensive) chicken, and less chickens for growers to raise.

The National Chicken Council will continue to work to ensure that any federal regulatory requirements are based in science and common sense, are achievable, and do not jeopardize the industry efficiency we have worked so hard to build.

Maine Foods will initially convert the broiler processing plant to an egg grading facility, and added it is excited about the growth prospects from this new operation, and, subject to the completion of the transaction, anticipates making additional investments in the facilities and community and creating new jobs.

Potential future expansion includes egg products processing capabilities, such as hard-cooked eggs. In connection with the acquisition, Cal-Maine Foods expects to enter into agreements with certain of Tyson’s former contract farmers to convert their operations to support Cal-Maine Foods’ cage free, free range, or pasture raised egg production operations, the company said.

Perdue Farms renews support for La Plaza Delaware Latino leadership training program SALISBURY, Md. — As part of a commitment to improve the quality of life in its communities, Perdue Farms is awarding a $20,000 grant to La Plaza Delaware and its Latino Leadership program through the Franklin P. and Arthur W. Perdue Foundation. The donation from Perdue’s charitable giving partner is part of the company’s Delivering Hope to Our Neighbors® outreach.

La Plaza Delaware is a nonprofit organization designed to increase economic stability and prosperity for Latinos in Sussex County. The program offers leadership training in partnership with the Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement (HACE), a national model with

programs in 37 states.

“Funding from Perdue enabled La Plaza to secure the partnership with HACE, train the trainer, and conduct the first Latino leadership training program with 13 graduates in 2022,” said Mary Dupont, La Plaza executive director. “The latest Perdue Foundation grant will build on the foundation established over the past year to provide HACE scholarships to 40 aspiring Gen Z and Millennial leaders over the next 12 months.”

La Plaza’s strategy brings leadership education and training to young professionals in the corporate, government and nonprofit sectors and includes aspiring young Latinos who work in small or family businesses at the community level.

Brakebush Brothers acquires Lake Foods in Ga. WESTFIELD, Wis. — Brakebush Brothers Inc., a foodservice chicken processor company, has announced the acquisition of Lake Foods of Hartwell, Ga., a portioning facility for raw, sized, marinated and ready-to-cook chicken products. The agreement was finalized on Dec. 31, 2023.

Both companies share a solid history of business success, dedicated employees with a commitment to quality, and a focus on customer service, Brakebush Brothers noted.

With additional roll-over funding, AFIA’s 2024 MAP funding stands at nearly $200,000, providing the animal food industry more opportunities to broaden market access in and support the export of U.S. animal food products to Vietnam and China, the associated added.

“We express appreciation to the USDA for acknowledging AFIA as the foremost authority in the animal feed, feed ingredient and pet food trade,” Constance Cullman, AFIA president and CEO, said. “The U.S. animal food industry has the potential to sustainably enhance the efficiency and quality of global animal nutrition practices and pet food diets. However, existing foreign regulatory and policy constraints hinder fair competition for these products in foreign markets. With the recently secured MAP funding, the AFIA is positioned to continue its work on expanding the U.S. animal food

industry’s $7.5 billion-worth of exports, the association said, adding that, the work entails conveying to Vietnamese and Chinese stakeholders the benefits — such as utility, safety and quality — that U.S. animal food products bring to farmers in terms of improved animal production and health. It also includes providing pet owners with information about the importance of complete and balanced pet diets to help their pets live longer, healthier lives.

Operating under the MAP framework, the FAS partners with trade associations, including the AFIA, and other collaborators to jointly fund the promotion of U.S. agricultural products and commodities internationally.

Mitloehner delivers IPPE Animal Agriculture Sustainability Summit keynote address ATLANTA — The annual Animal Agriculture Sustainability Summit was once again held at the 2024 International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE) in Atlanta, Ga. Ford Lifetime Achievement Award. This prestigious honor was presented to Starkey by Nath Morris, president of USPOULTRY. The Harold E. Ford Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to an individual whose dedication and leadership over the years have far exceeded the ordinary and impacted both the poultry industry and USPOULTRY in an exemplary manner. The award is presented non-annually and when the Awards and Recognition Committee unanimously recognizes and endorses the need for occasional, unique recognition for exceptional contributions.

“John provided consistent leadership to USPOULTRY for more

than 15 years, with USPOULTRY and IPPE growing significantly under his direction,” Nath Morris, USPOULTRY president, said.

Starkey was president of USPOULTRY from August 2007 to August 2023 after succeeding retiring president, Don Dalton. He began his professional career as an environmental engineer for Gold Kist in Atlanta in 1982 after completing his undergraduate degree in chemical engineering at Purdue University and a master’s degree in sanitary engineering at Georgia Tech. IPPE 2024 ... PEOPLE, PLACES AND THINGS Dr. Darrin Karcher presented the USPOULTRY Dr. Charles Beard Research Excellence Award ATLANTA — USPOULTRY and the USPOULTRY Foundation has recognized Dr. Darrin Karcher as the recipient of the annual Dr. Charles Beard Research Excellence Award. Karcher is an associate professor of animal sciences at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., and an adjunct associate professor of animal sciences at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich. The award is named in honor of Dr. Charles Beard, former director of the Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory and former vice president of research at USPOULTRY. The USPOULTRY Foundation Research Advisory Committee selected Karcher for this award due to his exceptional research focused on nutrition, management and skeletal issues in commercial layers. He has been the principal investigator for five

USPOULTRY funded projects and has been a co-investigator on two additional USPOULTRY projects.

“Dr. Karcher was a standout nominee for this award because his research, focusing on addressing producers’ concerns with laying hen management, bird welfare and food safety, has provided a wealth of knowledge for the layer industry and has led to many technological advancements in those areas,” Dr. Denise Heard, vice president of research programs, USPOULTRY, said.

Karcher has developed an Extension program that improves poultry production, regardless of scale, and is grounded in science.

Karcher completed his B.S. from The Ohio State University, M.S. in animal science at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and his Ph.D. in animal science at Purdue University. He serves on

the board of directors for the National Egg Quality School, Poultry Health Management School and Midwest Poultry Federation.

He has also served on the board of directors of the World’s Poultry Science Association. He was a Societal Impact Fellow at Purdue University and the North Central Region’s Excellence in Extension Award winner at Purdue University. In addition, Dr. Karcher is the recipient of many awards and fellowships and has published numerous peer-reviewed papers and authored publications, including book chapters.

The goal of the Dr. Charles Beard Research Excellence Award is to recognize outstanding completed research projects, funded by USPOULTRY or the USPOULTRY Foundation, which have made a significant positive impact on the poultry industry.

5 industry leaders are presented USPOULTRY Lamplighter Awards ATLANTA — The U.S. Poultry & Egg Association presented the organization’s annual Lamplighter Award to five individuals at the International Poultry Expo, part of the 2024 International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE). The award pays tribute to individuals for “sustained and exemplary service” to the poultry and egg industry.

This year’s honorees are: • Mike Giles Mike Giles is president of the Georgia Poultry Federation, the nation’s leading poultry producing state. Giles joined the Federation staff on Jan. 1, 2000, as assistant executive director. He was named president in January 2009. Prior to assuming his position with the Federation, Giles worked for the University of Georgia in the Office of External Affairs and University of Georgia Alumni Association. Before joining the University of Georgia, Giles held positions with U.S. Senator Sam Nunn and Sandoz Corporation.

Giles is a past president of the Rotary Club of Gainesville and serves on the Georgia 4-H Foundation Board of Trustees and the Georgia FFA Sponsors Board. Giles is a 1983 graduate of the University of Georgia.

• Sherman Miller Sherman Miller is president and CEO of Cal-Maine Foods. Miller joined Cal-Maine Foods in 1996, where he has devoted his professional career to Cal-Maine Foods by serving in various positions of increasing responsibility in operations and management, including serving as vice president of operations, chief operations officer and president.

Miller’s current and prior board service includes contributions to the United Egg Producers, the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association and the Mississippi State University Poultry Science Advisory Board, among others.

Miller has served on the USPOULTRY Board of Directors since 2012 and was chair of the USPOULTRY Board in 2015. Miller earned his B.S. in poultry science from Mississippi State University, where he currently serves as the Distinguished Fellow for the Department of Poultry Science.

• Dr. Ken Opengart Dr. Ken Opengart is vice president of animal welfare and international sustainability for Tyson Foods. Prior to joining Tyson Foods, Dr. Opengart worked with Keystone Foods where he held a variety of positions,

with the last being vice president of global sustainability and animal welfare. Other past employers include Eli Lilly and Company / Elanco Animal Health, Wampler Foods and Seaboard Farms / ConAgra Poultry. Dr. Opengart received his master’s degree in poultry science from Virginia Tech, his veterinary degree from the VirginiaMaryland College of Veterinary Medicine and his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech.

Opengart is a Diplomate of the American College of Poultry Veterinarians and was certified by the Professional Animal Auditor Certification Organization as a Foundation Poultry Welfare Auditor. He is a current board member for the U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Poultry & Eggs / International Poultry Welfare Alliance.

• Dr. David Swayne Dr. David E. Swayne is a veterinarian with specialization as a veterinary pathologist and poultry veterinarian. For the past 36 years, his personal research has focused on the pathobiology and control of poultry diseases, primarily avian influenza. He has published more than 354 peer-reviewed papers and 117 book chapters, given 369 invited lectures and served as editor or associate editor for 16 text and proceedings books, including Diseases of Poultry, and associate editor for five peer-reviewed journals, including Emerging Infectious Diseases and Avian Diseases.

He serves in leadership roles at the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) where he has led updates to the Avian Influenza chapters in Terrestrial Animal Health Code and Manual of Diagnostic Tests and Vaccines for Terrestrial Animals and completed a 16-month sabbatical to study highly pathogenic avian influenza control programs.

He currently serves as a member of the Steering Committee for OFFLU, the joint World Organization for Animal Health and the Food and Agriculture Organization Animal Influenza Network. Previously, POULTRY TIMES

• Barbara Jenkins Barbara Jenkins began her career with USPOULTRY in 2000, working in various positions in the education department. She was promoted to vice president of education programs in 2011, and student programs was added to her list of job responsibilities in 2014. Through her hard work and continued education, she has grown throughout her career. She was named executive director of the USPOULTRY Foundation in 2018.

In addition to maintaining her role as vice president of education and student programs for USPOULTRY, she has assumed responsibility of the USPOULTRY Foundation’s day-to-day operations.

She received her bachelor of science in business administration from DeVry University in 2006 and was recognized in 2016 with an Honorary American FFA Degree by the National FFA Organization, the highest honorary degree presented by the organization. Jenkins is dedicated to our industry’s growth in her relentless passion for growing USPOULTRY’s youth outreach program. She also dedicates her time to various boards and committees.

She is current chair of the International Association of Exhibitions and Events Education Committee and is on the Board of Directors and the Sponsors Board of the National FFA Organization.

USDA to kick off National Agricultural Classification Survey WASHINGTON — Already preparing for the 2027 Census of Agriculture, USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service is conducting the National Agricultural Classification Survey (NACS) as of Jan. 24. The survey, an important step in determining who should receive a 2027 Census of Agriculture questionnaire, will go to approximately 250,000 recipients to ask if they conduct agricultural activity. The results of the survey will ensure that every U.S. producer, no matter how large or small their operation, has a voice and is counted

in the highly anticipated and influential agricultural census data, the USDA said.

“This survey helps illustrate the breadth of American agriculture and enables USDA to get a complete count of all farmers and ranchers,” said NASS Administrator Hubert Hamer.“Every response matters. Even if a recipient believes that the survey does not apply to them, we ask that they respond to the few screening questions.”

NASS encourages recipients to respond securely online at www. agcounts.usda.gov, using the unique survey code mailed with the survey. Completed questionnaires may also be mailed back in the prepaid envelope provided.

NASS requests that each person who receives the survey respond promptly.

“The NACS ensures that everyone who produces and sells, or normally would sell, $1000 or more of agricultural products in a calendar year are represented in these vital data,” Hamer said.

Agriculture remains the most comprehensive source of data on American agriculture. Situated on University of Georgia’s South Campus, the 70,000plus square-foot Poultry Science Building is the new home of the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) Department of Poultry Science.

The new building will provide nearly double the space per student in each classroom, growing from roughly 17 square feet to 28 to 30 square feet per student.

Two-person tables replace individual wooden desks and mobile, 40-inch whiteboards for each group of six students tie into UGA’s active learning efforts.

“A big thing for students will be the sheer sense of space,” said Todd Applegate, poultry science department head and R. Harold and Patsy Harrison Chair in Poultry Science. “Nearly half of the poultry science faculty participated in active learning sessions within the last year — we are excited to combine these efforts with this new collaborative space to train the next generation of poultry science leaders.”

been influential to countless students and industry professionals across the state. Although the large classroom holds more than 100 students, multi-tiered seating enables students to easily collaborate and work together.

Students will not be the only ones to benefit from a more collaborative space.

“We’ve moved from an era of individual faculty having labs to more collaborative labs,” said Applegate, who also serves as CAES assistant dean for international programs. In addition to the teaching lab, the new research labs group four to five faculty around various themes to balance more complex research and UGA Cooperative Extension work, covering basic to applied research. “With thematic areas and collaborative spaces, I’m excited for what this model can spur just based on proximity.”

One unique space within the Poultry Science Building is the addition of a food safety intervention space, where researchers can run validations of certain poultry processing methods to reduce common foodborne pathogens.

Air turnover rates and additional safety features within labs have been implemented, along with a generator connected to the building to provide emergency power to freezers to prevent the loss of samples. Noisy and heatgenerating equipment has been moved out of lab spaces and into “freezer farms” so labs stay quieter and cooler.

“All of the labs are trying to accommodate some future in mind,” Applegate said. “Increased electrical capacity and free-standing benches will allow for more flexibility in arranging spaces and more teaching lab spaces will reduce issues in scheduling.”

my experiences attending UGA and from the deep reverence I have developed for poultry via caring for backyard chickens with my family for the last 10 years and birdwatching for the last two decades,” Hale said in his artist statement for the project.

The murals — located in the South Commons and lobby — are anchored by a core component of poultry science: the egg.

In the lower-level mural, a hen is seen sitting on an egg with a rooster nearby, head turned.

Upstairs the story continues in the lobby where newborn chicks join the hen and rooster. The chickens are seen eating under the sun, with the rooster and hen showing the chicks where to find seeds. “This illustration symbolically represents the efforts of the donors offering the Department of Poultry Science and its faculty and students the support to help them in their educational and career growth and development,” Hale said.

Additional private and industry support combine with public funding to uphold UGA as the global epicenter of poultry science The Luther and Susie Harrison Foundation, R. “Through our campaigns we’ve solidified and built new partnerships with a many in the private sector. We’ve had conversations on how we can establish long-term relationships, including working with our students,” Applegate said.

“The students are the future employees of these companies; the research coming out of the labs in the new building will not only benefit students, but also chicken meat and egg commodity bases. We’re not only meeting student needs while they are here but introducing them to the future.”

Bringing poultry science to public K-12 classrooms

ATHENS, Ga. — Poultry has grown to become the top commodity in Georgia’s number one industry, agriculture. Acquainting school-aged students with potential career paths in avian science is critical to staffing the state’s poultry sector.

Building on the foundation set by Avian Academy, the popular continuing education course for teachers offered annually by the University of Georgia’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES), the Georgia Department of Education worked with CAES to create middle- and high-school poultry science curricula. Now in its third year of use in Georgia public schools, the courses have been adopted by schools across the country.

Jessica Fife, outreach coordinator for the CAES Department of Poultry Science, worked with Christa Steinkamp, the curricu-

lum and technology director for the Georgia Agricultural Education (GAE) program, and CAES faculty to design a poultry science pathway that includes a new poultry science course and avian science and biotechnology course for the state’s public schools. GAE oversees classroom instruction, supervised agricultural experiences and student organization involvement for the Georgia Department of Education.

Starting with the materials developed for Avian Academy, Steinkamp worked with Fife on a draft of the course standards, then created a course-standard writing committee including agricultural education teachers and stakeholders from industry and other institutions, including the CAES Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communication (ALEC), University of North Georgia and Athens Technical College, as well as industry representatives including the U.S. Poultry and Egg Association

and Tyson Foods.

“The committee came to a consensus that this was a lot of content for one course, so we decided it would be two courses,” said Steinkamp, a 1999 CAES agribusiness graduate. “Once those standards were approved through the Georgia Department of Education, Jessica developed additional materials for those standards to provide support for teachers who want to incorporate this into their teaching.”

Working with her graduate advisor, ALEC Professor Barry Croom, and poultry science Associate Professor Andrew Benson, Fife used the coursework and textbooks for the “Introduction to Poultry Science” taught at CAES to create the support materials for the curriculum.

“We had teachers and educators on all levels look through the curriculum and make sure the course curriculum was appropriate to those standards and something they’d want to use,” said Fife, who started the

work as part of her thesis for her master’s degree in agricultural and environmental education, which she earned in 2020.

Preparing students for future careers The Georgia Department of Education approved the poultry science course to count as a fourth science option beginning in the 2022-23 school year. By completing the required threeclass coursework for the pathway, students will be recognized as completing the Poultry Science pathway in the Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources pathway under the Georgia Department of Education’s Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education framework.

“We created the standards and the pathway, but to encourage teachers to adopt it in the classroom, we created the full curriculum for that first poultry science class. We broke it up into units with timelines, activities, lessons, ideas for extra-curric-

ular activities, and other resources teachers can utilize,” Fife said.

“Teachers can use the resources we have created and modify it based on the level of their students, how in-depth they want to go on certain topics, and how much time they have for each topic. Teachers each have their own personality and level of experience, they have different ways they like to teach, and they can create their own lesson plans using the curriculum,” she added.

As both the poultry science pathway and curriculum were approved for use beginning in fall 2021, the number of schools and teachers adopting the courses is still growing, but Steinkamp sees the curriculum and resources developed with UGA as a significant advantage to increasing knowledge about the poultry industry through Georgia’s K-12 schools. tion programs in middle and high schools around the state, plus 57 agricultural programs in elementary schools.

“Teachers have so much on their plates, if they didn’t have those curriculum materials, it would be harder for them to incorporate these lessons. These materials make the courses more adaptable for use in the classrooms both in basic agriculture classes and in the poultry science and avian biology courses,” she said.

Cross-country reach The classes are designed for a high school level, but instructional resources are also available for middle school agriculture teachers, said Fife, who does both in-person and virtual visits at schools in Georgia and across the nation. In Georgia, nearly 300 students have taken pathway courses in poultry science or avian science and biotechnology between the 20212022 school year and the current 2023-2024 school year.

said she knows of schools using the curriculum in California, Michigan, Arkansas, Texas, South Carolina and Delaware.

“The curriculum is available to anyone. There’s a middle school in California that teaches a poultry science class and they’re using all of our curriculum, and I’ve done virtual school visits in California, Texas and Michigan. While we created the pathway for state of Georgia standards, the curriculum has gained reach beyond our state,” she said. “It’s been exciting to see how many places are using it, and those are only the ones that have reached out to us to let us know they are utilizing the curriculum.”

While word-of-mouth may account for the reach the curriculum has enjoyed, Fife said Googling “high-school poultry lessons” is just as likely to account for some of the adoption, as UGA’s curriculum tops the search results.

“There was not a lot of poultry content out there for educators and a lot that is out there is outdated or has a very clinical content design,” Fife said. “All of our resources are also branded to the college and the department, so teachers can call us to set up school visits, farm tours and connections for industry partnerships,” she said.

Industry support for the creation of the poultry science curriculum has been overwhelmingly positive and has included support for agricultural education programs in top poultryproducing counties.

The industry is ready and waiting to kick-start the next generation of poultry scientists, Fife said. If teachers are willing to invest their time and teach the subject, members of the poultry industry are willing to support in whatever way they can.

Poultry retains Mississippi’s top agriculture spot at $3.1 billion

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Mississippi’s poultry took an estimated 23 percent loss in value in 2023; though production was strong, a failure to meet the previous year’s record high prices was responsible for the hit.

Poultry generated an estimated $3.1 billion to Mississippi agriculture in 2023, down from the $3.9 billion generated in 2022. Eggs had the larger decline, dropping 30 percent to $202 million, while broilers dropped 22 percent to $2.9 billion.

With this farm gate value, poultry retains its top spot in Mississippi agriculture, above soybeans at $1.6 billion and forestry at $1.5 billion. The USDA will release final ag values in April.

Josh Maples, agricultural economist with the Mississippi State University Extension Service, said the decreased value does not mean 2023 was a bad year.

“For context, the 2023 poultry value of production is 17.5 percent higher than the 2021 value of production,” Maples said. “The current USDA forecast for broiler prices is to be a little more stable and similar in 2024 as they have been in 2023.”

Mississippi producers grew an estimated 4.3 billion pounds of broilers in 2023, maintaining a No. 6 ranking in the country for pounds produced.

The state is 13th nationally in egg production, and 2023’s decrease in egg value was also caused by exceptionally high egg prices in 2022.

“Many consumers likely remember the very high egg prices during the 2022 Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays,” Maples said. “Prices retreated to more normal levels throughout 2023 and are expected to be similar in 2024.”

avian influenza, or HPAI, but also infectious laryngotracheitis, or ILT. ILT is a highly contagious respiratory virus that affects mature chickens and pheasants, and the best method of preventing the spread is through good biosecurity practices and proper vaccinations.

“The risk of HPAI remains as high as it has ever been,” Moon said. “If we have a positive case, it will cause losses in export markets.”

Moon said when a state encounters an HPAI outbreak in a commercial poultry flock, exports are on hold until the state can meet the standards to be declared HPAI-free again. The affected farm is quarantined, and the affected flock is depopulated and disposed, while the premises are cleaned and sanitized to pass inspection.

“HPAI testing and surveillance is conducted within the surrounding area,” Moon said.

met and the state can self-declare themselves HPAI-free, USDA can submit this to the international trade partners and hopefully exports will then continue.”

This stage can take months, and if another farm experiences an HPAI outbreak, the process is extended. Mississippi had only one HPAI outbreak on a commercial poultry farm in 2023.

Moon said 2023 was a very poor year for publicly traded poultry companies, which reported major losses this year. The coming year may be as difficult.

“The high price of feed ingredients early in the year and the low market price would be what we are still trying to overcome from

the end of 2023 and extending into 2024,” Moon said.

Labor shortages challenged the industry in 2023, and Moon said there remains a big opportunity for many staffing positions, particularly skilled positions like drivers, mechanics, electricians, plumbers and welders.

2023 marks the 29th straight year that poultry has topped the list of agricultural commodities in Mississippi.
