CHICAGO — I think we can all agree that 2023 was a challenging year for eggs, but whatever our concerns, the egg industry has good reason to be very optimistic about the future. Your American Egg Board (AEB) is moving aggressively on multiple fronts to ensure security and prosperity for America’s egg farmers in 2024 and beyond.

As we head into the holi- Metz day home stretch, I’d like to highlight three important initiatives that will figure prominently in the year ahead.

Cage-free transitions The AEB is supporting America’s egg farmers through what may prove to be the biggest evolution in our industry’s history. Many of our producers have already or are in various stages of transitioning some or all of their operations to cage-free housing in response to new laws and customer needs. At the current pace of growth, by the end of 2025, cage-free production will represent more than half of the U.S. egg supply.

In fact, the cage-free egg supply has increased by more than 400 percent in the past decade — a figure that has far exceeded actual consumer demand for cage-free eggs.

America’s egg farmers have always evolved and adapted their businesses to align with both customer orders and consumer purchasing at retail, and they have taken responsible, deliberate actions to ensure a steady supply of cage-free eggs in consideration of changing demand. Even so, demand for more affordable, conventional caged eggs remains steady. Egg farmers know they must meet true demand for all types of eggs.

Converting existing operations or building new cage-free housing is the single largest investment an egg farmer may ever make. This is one of many reasons transitions to cage-free must be done in close collaboration with egg customers at retail and foodservice. Further, cage-free eggs typically cost more to produce, and the costs of inputs such as labor and feed are often higher. That’s why maintaining choices in the egg case is important. While eggs are invaluable, AEB’s consumer research and intelligence clearly show that many consumers — and customers — want the most affordable option in the case.

To that end, AEB is carefully monitoring and providing tools and resources for producers, customers and industry partners to navigate the evolving landscape, while also supporting those who are transitioning to cage-free egg

supplies to comply with new state laws or to meet established transition deadlines.

For the past year, our team has also been developing a comprehensive communications strategy for leading the industry smoothly through these transitions — encompassing scenario planning, messaging development, consumer education, and media and customer engagement — and we are implementing it now. Rest assured that all egg producers, regardless of production system, will have the support and air cover needed to succeed in this changing environment.

Exports growth The export market for shell eggs and egg products is a significant and largely untapped opportunity. Compared to other commodities, America’s egg farmers have almost literally kept their eggs all in one basket — the U.S. domestic market. While the U.S. now exports more than 20 percent of its pork and 18 percent of its dairy, U.S. egg industry exports for the past decade have only accounted for about 3.8 percent of total table egg production annually on average. Our due diligence and data indicate U.S. egg producers are missing a poPOULTRY TIMES

tentially huge opportunity to grow their businesses through exports.

In addition to delivering value to producers via sales growth, this is also about managing risk and delivering greater stability through diversification. We have more than 300 million egg laying hens in commercial production here in the U.S. — that’s nearly one bird for every American — that collectively produce nearly 100 billion eggs annually. Those birds do not come equipped with an on/off switch. By establishing strong, ongoing, long-term business relationships with overseas customers, we can mitigate domestic seasonal demand spikes and ensure that our eggs always have a home.

This past November,AEB personnel and nine producers from across the country spanning a variety of farm sizes and production types undertook a trade mission to South Korea and Japan, where we toured wholesale markets, and met with major retail and manufacturing customers, as well as trade officials at our embassies, to gain a better understanding of the opportunities in these markets.

This trade mission reflects a new strategic direction for the U.S. egg industry focused on deliberate and accelerated growth in exports.

Through this determined focus on exports, the AEB seeks to roughly double the average annual U.S. egg exports to 7 percent of total table egg production within the next five years. This is an ambitious, but achievable goal that our producer leadership and my team and I believe is fundamental to the prosperity and long-term stability of U.S. egg producers and the industry.

While there is ample opportunity for shell eggs, the near-term focus is on egg products due to their versatility, functionality and transportability, but U.S. eggs and egg products both have an advantage over eggs and egg products sourced elsewhere in the world because they (Continued on page 11)

USPOULTRY Foundation supports National 4-H Poultry, Egg Conference TUCKER, Ga. — The U.S. Poultry & Egg Association’s Harold E. Ford Foundation (USPOULTRY Foundation) once again sponsors the National 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center in Louisville, Ky. The conference recognizes 4-H members who have excelled in their states in poultry learning experience activities. The activities and contests are designed to introduce participants to poultry and the poultry industry. Life skills are learned through preparation for the various contests. Participants are also made aware of careers in poultry and allied industries.

The conference hosted more than 142 4-H’ers from 24 states, allowing them to compete in events that help them learn to formulate and defend decisions, speak publicly and expand their poultry-related skills. Opportunities included five separate competitive events: poultry judging, chicken barbecuing, turkey barbe-

USPOULTRY gives an updated report on on-farm antibiotic use

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — On Dec. 11, the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association gave an update on the research being conducted on the usage of antibiotics on farms. The report stated that there was significant dedication and supervision of antibiotics to keep poultry health steady.

“USPOULTRY’s board of directors has supported this research for more than a decade, and it emphasizes the continued focus on the judicious use of antibiotics in the poultry industry,” Nath Morris, USPOULTRY president, said. “We are thankful for the long-term involvement of so many members in this study.”

The research was conducted by Dr. Randall Singer of Mindwalk Consulting Group LLC and the University of Minnesota. For broiler chickens, data was collected over a period of a decade. For turkeys, data was collected during a period of seven years. Data for eggs was collected over a time period of seven years as well.

Many poultry companies in the United States voluntarily gave antibiotic data to USPOULTRY. The report warns not to combine or compare the data collections because there are major differences between broiler chickens, turkeys and layers.

The following is some of the data presented in the report.

Key changes among broiler chickens over the 2013-2022 period: • Broiler chickens receiving antibiotics in the hatchery decreased from 90 percent (2013) to less than 1 percent (2022).

• Medically important in-feed antibiotic use in broiler chickens decreased substantially; there was no reported in-feed tetracycline use in 2020 through 2022, and virginiamycin use decreased about 97 percent over the 10-year period.

• Medically important water-soluble antibiotic use in broiler chickens decreased substantially from 2013-2017 and has increased slightly from 2017-2022. Increases were typically due to increased disease incidence, as seen in other countries as well, during the 2019-2022 period: • Penicillin use decreased by 64 percent from 2013-2019 but has increased 22 percent from 2019-2022 due to increases in gangrenous dermatitis incidence; overall, penicillin use decreased 53 percent from 2013-2022.

• Lincomycin use decreased by 66 percent from 2013-2020 but has increased 28 percent from 2020-2022 due to increases in gangrenous dermatitis incidence; overall, lincomycin

use decreased 53 percent from 2013-2022.

• Tetracycline use decreased by 87 percent since 2013.

• Sulfonamide use decreased by 96 percent since 2013.

Key changes among turkeys over the 2013-2022 period: • Turkeys receiving antibiotics in the hatchery decreased from 97 percent (2013) to approximately 38 percent (2022).

• The hatchery decreased from 97 percent (2013) to approximately 38 percent (2022).

• Hatchery gentamicin use decreased almost 50 percent from 2013 to 2022.

• Medically important in-feed antibiotic use in turkeys decreased substantially; in-feed tetracycline use decreased more than 75 percent over the 10-year period.

• Medically important water-soluble antibiotic use in turkeys decreased substantially from 2013-2019 and then stabilized or increased slightly from 2019-2022. Increases were typically due to increased disease incidence, as seen in other countries as well, during the 2019-2022 period: • Penicillin use decreased by 44 percent since 2013.

• Lincomycin use decreased by 58 percent from 2013 to 2020 but then increased from 2020-2022 due to increases in gangrenous dermatitis incidence and a shortage of penicillin.

• Neomycin use decreased by 54 percent since 2013.

• Tetracycline use decreased 21 percent overall from 2013-2022, but there was an increase from 2019-2022, largely due to increases in colibacillosis.

Key findings among layer chickens over the 2016-2022 period: • Layer chickens (hens) typically begin laying eggs around 20 weeks of age and end when the layer hen is around 80 to 100 weeks of age.

• Table egg production is similar to milk production, where the product for human consumption is produced on a daily basis. Most antibiotics that could be administered to layer hens have withdrawal periods that would prevent all eggs produced during this period from entering the food supply. This is one reason why little antibiotic is used in table egg production in the U.S. • All chicks in the dataset received gentamicin in the hatchery (day 1 of age).

• In the U.S., the majority of chicks purchased by egg companies are sourced from hatcheries that are owned and operated by genetics companies.

• The only medically important antibiotic used in layer hens for treatment and control of disease in this dataset was chlortetracycline (CTC), used in part because it has a zero-day withdrawal, meaning that there is no loss of eggs during the treatment period.

• CTC was only administered via the feed in pullets (day 2 through 16 to 18 weeks of age) and layer hens.

• The majority (>95 percent) of CTC was used in the layer hens for treatment of disease Less than 0.2 percent of total hen-days were exposed to CTC.

TUCKER, Ga. — I have been honored to serve as the 2023 chairman of the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association (USPOULTRY). I am pleased to say the Association continues to evolve and develop new resources and programs to meet our goal of being the leading technical resource and voice for the feather industries.

USPOULTRY serves our members and the entire poultry and egg industry through the proceeds from the annual International Poultry Expo, the flagship event produced by the Association as part of the International Poultry & Processing Expo (IPPE). And I am excited that IPPE will feature the largest trade show floor in its history in 2024!

The 2024 IPPE is a partnership between the International Poultry Expo, the International Feed Expo and International Meat Expo, and will be held Jan. 30–Feb. 1, at the Georgia World Congress Center. IPPE attracts industry leaders, decision-makers and purchasing managers from around the world to Atlanta to experience and see the newest technology, research, processes and products that the global animal food, meat, poultry and egg industries have to offer. All segments of today’s poultry and egg, animal food and meat industries are represented, including feed milling, hatchery, egg production, live production, processing, further processing, rendering and a variety of supporting activities.

Some might not be aware that the International Poultry Expo is one of USPOULTRY’s major sources of income, allowing the Association to serve the industry in a variety of ways. The revenue that is generated through IPPE is reinvested back into the industry. In 2023, more than $3 million was directed into programs to provide critical research, education, training, technical assistance, crisis management assistance, public relations and regulatory assistance for your business and our industry.

Industry research continues to be a major recipient of the funds generated by the International Poultry Expo. Since 1969, more than $36 million has been allocated to research projects that enhance all phases of the poultry and egg industry. Ongoing research funding from both USPOULTRY and the USPOULTRY POULTRY TIMES

Foundation remains a crucial element in addressing challenges within the poultry industry, contributing to its efficiency and productivity as a key segment of animal agriculture.

Investing in the industry to USPOULTRY also means investing in the future of the industry. Consequently, USPOULTRY actively supports and engages in various programs designed to involve students aspiring to join the poultry industry. These programs aim to enhance students’ comprehension of the industry through targeted development initiatives.

The USPOULTRY Foundation also provides recruiting grants to colleges and universities to help attract students to their poultry programs or expose students in other majors to our industry. For 2023, $297,580 in student recruiting funds were approved to 26 colleges and universities across the United States.

The annual USPOULTRY Foundation College Student Career Program brings 700+ students to IPPE, providing them with the chance to network and interview for jobs and internships in the industry. The International Student Program caters to Latin American and other international students, offering a specialized program tailored to their needs. The Ph.D. and Vet Student Career Fair, held in conjunction with the Poultry Science Association Foundation during the International Poultry Scientific Forum at IPPE, is specifically designed for post-doctoral, Ph.D., and vet students, with a focus on technology-driven companies in genetics, health, pharmaceuticals and nutrition. These initiatives are integral to the USPOULTRY Foundation’s ongoing commitment to inspire talented young individuals to become leaders in the industry’s future.

In addition, the USPOULTRY invites FFA Career Development Event winners and national FFA officers to IPPE. Students were given the opportunity to visit the exhibit floor to see and experience the latest technological advancements offered by today’s poultry industry.

USPOULTRY also supports 4-H and sponsors college poultry judging competitions.

Education continues to be a fundamental element of USPOULTRY’s commitment to serve the industry. Did you know, the very first seminar was held in 1956? Our seminars pro-

USPOULTRY’s Human Resources, Safety & Health Program develops training materials, programs and videos that help member companies improve operations, identify and reduce loss exposures, and enhance employee safety and retention.

USPOULTRY also identifies and maintains technical resources that address key industry issues, as well as provides administrative leadership for several joint poultry industry councils.

USPOULTRY’s Food Safety & Production Program provides technical assistance to member companies in live production, processing, animal welfare and food safety. The program helps ensure the safety and quality of U.S. poultry meat and egg prod-

are heavily regulated and produced according to some of the highest quality and safety standards on the planet, and they perform consistently in formulation. Customers overseas understand the advantages of U.S. eggs and egg products, and they are hungry for them.

The AEB is driving this effort by focusing on three critical areas: Trade capacity building, international market insights and prioritization of market opportunities. We want the global egg market to have increased access to what we believe are the best eggs in the world, produced

by America’s egg farmers with care every day.

But one of the main hurdles to growing our egg exports is honestly just securing producer interest. I am pushing our egg producers hard to embrace this opportunity, and these trade missions are an important component to helping our producers see the opportunity. We are already planning our next trade mission to key target markets in the first half of next year, and I am excited to expose U.S. producers firsthand to the incredible growth potential these markets present.

So we entered into a three-year partnership with AHA to educate consumers — and their physicians — to shift the narrative on eggs and cholesterol.

In its first year, the campaign was very successful with activations during September/ National Cholesterol Education Month spanning broadcast TV and radio and social media to reach millions of consumers, while also educating medical professionals about the latest research via AHA’s continuing education module. Our next activations are planned for American Heart Month in February.

Cal-Maine reports positive AI test result at Kansas facility POULTRY TIMES

RIDGELAND, Miss. — CalMaine Foods Inc. on Dec. 12 reported that one of the company’s facilities in Kansas tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza, affecting approximately 684,000 laying hens, or approximately 1.6 percent of the company’s total flock.

Production at the facility has temporarily ceased as the company follows the protocols prescribed by the USDA. Cal-Maine Foods is working to secure production from other facilities to minimize disruption to its customers, the company noted.

While HPAI does not represent a significant threat to humans or the safety

creased more than 400 percent and global GDP has increased by 500 percent. During the heyday of free trade (2000-2018), global GDP grew at an average of 5.4 percent annually. But those days are over as the ideological pendulum has swung towards economic protectionism and political isolationism.

Global growth in 2023 is estimated at around 2.5 percent and the consensus is for a continued slowdown in 2024. China’s economic growth rate has leveled off considerably. Business plans must account for the reality of permanently slower global economic growth moving forward.

• U.S. economy: Consumer sentiment Key indicators point to the strength of the U.S. economy.

Headline inflation has plummeted to 3.1 percent, the unemployment rate remains below 4 percent and inflation-adjusted wages are growing. However, large swaths of U.S. consumers remain anxious about their financial situations given high grocery prices, skyrocketing mortgage rates and other inflationary pressures. While grocery inflation is currently running at

about 2 percent, the price of food at home has risen by 25 percent in the past three years.

Consumer spending makes up almost 70 percent of the economy and consumers who are worried or angry will hold back on discretionary spending.

Inflation-adjusted retail spending has fallen in 10 of the past 12 months, a trend that could carry into 2024.

• U.S. government: Funding bills The difficulties of governing with slim majorities in both the House and Senate were in clear focus as 2024 draws near. While the House was ultimately able to pass a Continuing Resolution (CR) three days before a shutdown deadline, none of the 12 annual appropriations bills have been enacted. Until Congress can complete its work appropriating discretionary funding, little progress can be made on other major legislation like the Farm Bill.

For rural America, there was a silver lining in the CR as it extended the current Farm Bill through Sept. 30, 2024. However, many reasons favor completing the new Farm Bill sooner rather than later. Cooperation will become increasingly difficult as

the next election cycle begins.

• U.S. agricultural economy: Costs Higher interest rates, a strong U.S. dollar and resiliency of the U.S. economy have weighed heavily on agricultural commodity prices. But the biggest problem for farm margins heading into 2024 is the elevated cost of production. While fertilizer prices have fallen, other costs of production remain stubbornly high.

However, ag commodities will benefit from more upside price risk than down in 2024. Global grain and oilseed stock inventories are tight by historic measures and the northern hemisphere will likely have a strong El Nino weather pattern during the growing season for the first time since 2015. The dollar should continue its recent decline and global demand should return to its long-term growth trend.

• Grains, farm supply & biofuels The renewable diesel boom and the smaller U.S. soybean harvest of 2023 will drive an expansion of soybean acreage in 2024, reducing acres available for other crops. The biofuel sector at large carries the momen-

tum of historically large profit margins into the new year.

Both ethanol producers and soybean crushers are benefiting from rising demand for biofuels.

The grain and oilseed price outlook hinges largely on the value of the U.S. dollar, conditions of wheat in Russia and harvests of corn and soybeans in South America. Current 2024 futures prices suggest further price erosion across the sector in 2024.

• Animal protein Profitability for the U.S. livestock sector should improve modestly in 2024, as lower feed costs and steadfast domestic demand offset weak global export conditions. Beef packers will continue to struggle with shrinking supplies of available cattle.

Tighter cattle numbers, flat pork supplies and dampened broiler availability would normally be seen as supportive to margins, but all segments have been fighting rising costs of production. • Dairy The upside potential for dairy demand faces some uncertainty moving into the new year. Dairy product sales should grow, led by cheese, butter and yogurt.

However, that growth will be at a slightly slower pace as U.S. consumers will be pressured by reduced household savings, growing credit card debt and higher interest rates.

The candidate that was finally selected is the vaccine that is now Poulvac Procerta HVT-IBD-ND. Protection in birds that received the trivalent vaccine in ovo was 90 percent following intraocular challenge with a virulent infectious bursal disease (IBD) virus at 14 and 21 days of age, Rong said. The vaccine also proved effective against velogenic Newcastle disease (ND) following in ovo administration, providing 75 percent protection after a challenge at 14

days of age and 95 percent protection after challenge at 21 days of age. When birds that received Poulvac Procerta HVT-IBD-ND were challenged at 63 days of age with virulent or very virulent IBD or velogenic ND viruses, 100 percent were protected, demonstrating the vaccine’s long duration of immunity, Rong said. Like the other HVT vector vaccines, Poulvac Procerta HVT-IBD-ND has an excellent safety profile and avoids reactions associated with live ND vaccines.
