about the artist Joriel Vincent T. Magat is an architecture student in the University of Santo Tomas College of Architecture. He graduated high school at Wellspring High School, Inc., Capas, Tarlac. He pursued his dream in the city of Manila and left his provincial life. He may be new to the environment but he has always believed that adventure is out there. He is known to be very dynamic and always comes with fresh new ideas. He is very open to something new and outside the box but he is more into modern industrial, modern asian zen, and parametric design styles. He strives to learn for he believes learning will improve himself and his skills. He also look into details and believes art is a long and gradual process. He also likes to turn little things into something extravagant and unique . This is seen with his architectural designs and his design philosophy. He is also into layouting, photography, graphic design and other forms of art. He is indeed an artist by heart.

DESIGN CONCEPT AND INSPIRATION The name Project Cordia was derived from two words - cord and cordia itself. Cord is derived form the main design inspiration of this project, the spinal column or simply spine, which protects the spinal cord. It is also known as the BACKBONE, or the main support of our body most especifically, the skeletal and nervous systems. Moreover, cordia refers to the genus of flowering and medicinal plants composes of different species of shrubs and trees. Lastly, cordia in Latin also means “heart”. With that, Project Cordia aims to make the Medical Arts Building the BACKBONE of this medical complex. Just like how the spinal cord serves as the the pathway where messages are sent by the brain to the different parts of the body, the MAB also serves as the main building that connects or houses the different disciplines and specializations of medicine. Project Cordia also aims to provide the users most especially the patients a place where there are green and open spaces. Since plants don’t just add to the aesthetic of the building, but also helps the mental and psychological well-beings of the users. Lastly, Project Cordia also wants the MAB to be the heart and soul of the entire medical complex.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
“Encouraging the Healing experience through Nature and Nurture.” Life inspires Life. Medical facilities are essentially an environment where sick people go for treatment. Hence, it is usually designed to cater to the needs of the patients and the processes involved in such. Consequently, these facilities must also cater to the morale of not only its staff who work demanding shifts and its patients - who are facing a grueling battle towards recovery. This can be achieved through the intermingling of the built (the hospital and MAB) and natural environment (Vertical Green and open space). A study conducted by Dhand (2014) even stated long exposure to nature has been clinically proven to improve the health of sick people no matter what disease they had. Providing outdoor views with greenscapes instead of cityscapes can be helpful in building up morale and hope.
DESIGN CONCEPT AND DESIGN INSPIRATION Healthcare Facilities such as Hospitals are known as a place of life and death. Consequently, it plays a major role in the life of a human being. One of the major indicators which can be used for a patient’s diagnosis is the blood which I chose as the design inspiration for the form. Blood is considered the essence of life as it plays several important functions in the Human Body. Additionally, it is composed of different components which includes its Basic Unit - the Blood Cells. For it to sustain life, blood undergoes a cycle therefore, representing the continuous flow of life. Hence, the Basic Form inspiration used was a cross section of a blood vessel with blood cells flowing inside. Consequently, the design aims to mimic the fluidity or dynamism of blood seen in the curves and how it was adapted into the current form of the site. Now to expound the concept even further, the heart or the main organ of the blood circulatory system is integrated as the design inspiration for the hospital. In analogy of the function of the heart where it is the organ that receives oxygen-poor blood, oxygenizes it and pumps out the oxygen-rich blood to the other parts of the body, the hospital aims to cater the ill patients, cure them and hopefully heal them after.
CONCEPT SHEET Objectives, Considerations, and Strategies

The project aims to harness the reasoning and creative functions of the students and produce a design that understands and addresses the need for care and health. DESIGN OB JECTIVE
To design a sustainable Hospital Environment rooted in enhancing the healing experience.
2
PROJECT OB JECTIVE The project aims to design not only to provide curative spaces, as well as the commercial aspect of the project, but also develop skills that address building function, accesses, and mobility as well as the special character associated in designing medical facilities. DESIGN OB JECTIVE
To maximize innovative technology incorporated in the design of the structure
3
PROJECT OB JECTIVE The project aims to address not only the visual impact of their solution or answering and providing the appropriate spaces for an impactful Health Facility but inject concerns of humanity when designing facilities where users are generally impaired. DESIGN OB JECTIVE
To design a hospital with efficient circulation for all users (staff and patients)

Core
Diagrid and Inner Truss Framing System
The structural system utilized in the MAB and the Hospital is a combination of the diagrid structural system and the inner truss tube structural system. This is similar to the structural system used in the Mode Gakuen Spiral Towers located in Nagoya city. For the MAB’s Structural System, a central reinforced concrete core supporting the external diagonal members connected through the floor beams, ring beams, and braces in a mesh network that forms an inner truss tube. The upper part of the structure rotates 10 degrees counterclockwise each storey starting from the fifth floor. However, for the hospital, added supports are added through the placement fo 25 columns with 12 of which are directly connected to the concrete core to resist the added load due to longer and wider wingspans in comparison to the MAB. These concrete columns are connected to the ring beams and braces through steel beams, creating a mesh network that forms an inner truss tube. Unike the MAB, the upper floors of the structure are rotating 2 degrees in a clockwise direction, starting from the 6th floor.

01 BARANGAY HEALTH CENTER
THE CONCEPT OF THIS BARANGAY HEALTH CENTER WAS DERIVED FROM THE ORIGIN OF THE WORD "BARANGAY" WHICH IS "BALANGAY", A WOODEN BOAT WHICH IS KNOWN TO BE ONE OF THE MAIN SETTLEMENT BEFORE AND ONE OF THE ROOT OF OUR CIVILIZATION OR SOCIETY HERE IN OUR COUNTRY. I USED THIS INSPIRATION SINCE THIS HEALTH CENTER WILL BE A PLACE NOT JUST TO ACCOMMODATE THE BASIC HEALTH NEEDS OF ALL THE PEOPLE IN THE BARANGAY BUT ALSO SERVE AS A SOCIAL AND GREEN SPACE FOR THE USERS. THE STRUCTURE FOLLOWS A MODERN BRUTALIST STYLE. THE MAIN MATERIALS USED ARE WOOD, GLASS AND CONCRETE. THE SILHOUETTE OF THE BOAT IS SEEN ON THE CONCRETE FACADE OF THE STRUCTURE. FROSTED GLASS BLOCKS ARE A MODERN TAKE TO THE CAPIZ WINDOWS WHICH GIVES IT A FILIPINO IDENTITY AND SINCE CAPIZ SHELLS ARE FOUND AT SEAS. WAVY WOOD COMPOSITE CLADDINGS WERE INSPIRED BY THE WAVES OF THE OCEAN AND THE MAIN MATERIAL OF A BALANGAY BOAT. THE WHITE CONCRETE SHOWS MONUMENTALITY AND PURITY WHICH IS PERFECT FOR A HEALTH CENTER.

03 TEMPORARY TRIAGE AND QUARANTINE FACILITY
In designing, there are so many things to considerate. Designing doesn’t simply end on planning, you must also take in consideration the utilities and facilities needed to the specific structure you are designing, the users and their needs and of course design solutions in order to solve the design problem you are facing. Yes, creating functional and efficient architectural solutions within a specific context is very challenging but I can say that I have manage to apply it well to my designs. I can say it is best seen in my design concept and considerations which later on were translated through the drawings. However, I also believe I have improved in translating my ideas and concept to my perspectives and other drawings, reflecting what I have really envision them to look like. This became possible because I have enhanced my skills in digital presentation which I believe helped me translate more my ideas into drawings. We have finished another semester in this online or virtual setting far from what the normal setting is. Taking this sem especially architectural design class during this pandemic brought challenges and hardships not just to me, my blockmates and my instructor. Yes, I can say that studying virtually through online classes is not as effective as studying face-to-face especially our course is more of an output-based course but we should just all accept it since learning should not be stopped. This whole experience thought us to be more flexible and help us improve our coping abilities. However, if you were to asked me, I can still say that I learn more the traditional way because I can absorb the lessons more. But with the help of our instructor, Ar. Fernandez, even if the class was held online, I can say I have learned a lot. From the standards, designs and even to tips and tricks in designing such structures and facilities. Just like after my previous design classes, I would like to advice the future students to always remember that you should be creative and think out of the box. Also, if you are struggling, don’t be afraid to seek help from your seniors or your block mates, for they are always ready to extend their helping hand. With the help of your peers and seniors, you could improve your skills and your designs better. Moreover, do not be afraid to ask especially to your instructors because when you ask, you gain something from them. They are just waiting you to approach them. The most important advice I could give you is to not forget to give yourself some time also. It is good to be productive and on time but if you are already stressing and exhausting yourself too much, it is also you who will suffer in the end. Everything comes to an end, as we always say, but an end always come with a new beginning. Indeed, Architectural Design 7 showed me how difficult yet how fun architecture is, especially when you are learning it with the right people and right instructor. I can never be more grateful to belong to this class and not just simply being able survive the entire semester but surviving it, bringing all the lessons and experiences that this class taught me. You may face different challenges and mistakes along the way, but you should always learn from these mistakes and the not-so-good outcomes in your life. Lastly, you can finish everything you want to get finish as long as you word hard and enjoy what you are doing.
REFLECTION
After a whole semester of taking Architectural Design 7, I gain a lot of knowledge, ideas, and experience in design medical related buildings. From designing a medical arts building to designing a general hospital, and even designing a health center, clinic, and a triage and quarantine facility, I was able to push myself more and bring out more creativity to these plates.
