about the artist Joriel Vincent T. Magat is an architecture student in the University of Santo Tomas College of Architecture. He graduated high school at Wellspring High School, Inc., Capas, Tarlac. He pursued his dream in the city of Manila and left his provincial life. He may be new to the environment but he has always believed that adventure is out there. He is known to be very dynamic and always comes with fresh new ideas. He is very open to something new and outside the box but he is more into modern industrial, modern asian zen, and parametric design styles. He strives to learn for he believes learning will improve himself and his skills. He also look into details and believes art is a long and gradual process. He also likes to turn little things into something extravagant and unique . This is seen with his architectural designs and his design philosophy. He is also into layouting, photography, graphic design and other forms of art. He is indeed an artist by heart.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

“ Look Beyond the World You See ” People tend to just focus in what is in front of them when there so much more to see if we only look further and beyond the world we see. Just like in Architecture and designing, we still have much to discover especially with styles, concepts, and structural designs with the help of Science and of course our imagination.

DESIGN CONCEPT “ Architecture as Reflection of Space and Culture ” The Bakunawa Pavilion is inspired with a serpent-like dragon of the same name, who is believed to be the Guardian of the Sea and Underworld or the Deep Sea and also known as the Eater of the Moon, hence the creator of eclipses. Its movement also served as a geomathic calendar system of ancient Filipinos. It is also a symbol of power, strength and strong will which are some of the characteristics Filipinos possess. The concept of the Bakunawa Pavilion aims to not just showcase Filipinos’ legacy on explorng the Outer Space and Inner Space, but also showcase a part of the Philippine Mythology. The pavilion also highlights a play with the water element since this element plays a big role for us Filipinos since we live in a archipelagic country. It is used an articulation of the design and its reflective property was also maximized in line of the concept of the space and the sea as endless and as a reflection of one another. Known as the dragon that have eaten the six moons among the seven that Bathala created, the Bakunawa Pavilion now shows the moment the Bakunawa is trying to bring the last moon closer to the people rather than eating it, giving them the chance to immerse themselves and experience the wonders of both the outer space and inner space.

DESIGN CONCEPT Known as the most multicultural province in Central Luzon, Tarlac has a mixture of four distinct groups – the Pampangos, Ilocanos, Pangasinenses and Tagalogs, sharing and living together in a single province. This is due to the different provinces boarding it which includes Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Zambales, Pangasinan and the Ilocos Region. Tarlac is also best known for its fine foods and vast sugar and rice plantations hence my main inspirations for my design. Sugarcane is a grass known to be the main source of the sugar. Just like cinemas, this is one of our sources of entertainment which makes us satisfy like, how sugar satisfy are sweetooth craving. This could be seen on the main massing of the structure where segmentation as an articulation of the segmented characteristic of a sugar cane. Moreover, how the rice field reflects the sky was also integrated in the design by putting water features around the structure, maximizing the potential of reflection and cooling. This is a metaphor how movies and plays reflect our culture. “THE SHOOT” is a cinema and theatre complex located at Luisita Tarlac. Its name was derived from the same word which means - to capture a moment into photo / film and the initial growth of a sugarcane, the mian inspiration for this project, just like bamboo.

In designing, there are so many things to considerate. Designing doesn’t simply end on planning, you must also take in consideration the utilities and facilities needed to the specific structure you are designing, the users and their needs and of course design solutions in order to solve the design problem you are facing. Yes, creating functional and efficient architectural solutions within a specific context is very challenging but I can say that I have manage to apply it well to my designs. I can say it is best seen in my design concept and considerations which later on were translated through the drawings. Moreover, it is also during this sem that I was pushed to do better in translating my concept into architecture with the help of my professor, Ar. Gene Flancia, who believes that I can still do better and better. Though I'm still not at my best, I also believe I have improved in translating my ideas and concept to my perspectives and other drawings, reflecting what I have really envision them to look like. This became possible because I have enhanced my skills in digital presentation which I believe helped me translate more my ideas into drawings than manual presentation. Another semester has passed, the last design course before thesis. It is still unfortunate to have classes in an online setting but this situation really developed our coping skills. Nevertheless, I have still managed to learn a lot this semester though maybe not as effected of that in face-to-face. Though truly challenging, I am very glad that I have managed to survive this semester. Just like after my previous design classes, I would like to advice the future students to always remember that you should be creative and think out of the box. Also, if you are struggling, don’t be afraid to seek help from your seniors or your block mates, for they are always ready to extend their helping hand. With the help of your peers and seniors, you could improve your skills and your designs better. Moreover, do not be afraid to ask especially to your instructors because when you ask, you gain something from them. They are just waiting you to approach them. The most important advice I could give you is to not forget to give yourself some time also. It is good to be productive and on time but if you are already stressing and exhausting yourself too much, it is also you who will suffer in the end. Everything comes to an end, as we always say, but an end always come with a new beginning. Indeed, Architectural Design 8 showed me how difficult yet how fun architecture is, especially when you are learning it with the right people and right instructor. I can never be more grateful to belong to this class and not just simply being able survive the entire semester but surviving it, bringing all the lessons and experiences that this class taught me. You may face different challenges and mistakes along the way, but you should always learn from these mistakes and the not-so-good outcomes in your life. Lastly, you can finish everything you want to get finish as long as you word hard and enjoy what you are doing.

REFLECTION

After a whole semester of taking Architectural Design 8, I gain a lot of knowledge, ideas, and experience in designing cultural and entertainment structures. From designing a pavilion of the future to designing a theatre and cinema complex, and even designing a stage, marque and box office, I was able to push myself more and bring out more creativity to these plates.
