Cave Painting

Did people paint pictures in the Stone Age? Yes, they did. They painted pictures in their caves. There are still about 350 examples of Stone Age cave paintings in existence. These cave paintings are about 20,000 years old.

What paint did Stone Age people use? They made their paint from red and yellow ochre. Ochre is a naturally colored clay. They used charcoal, as well. What did Stone Age people paint on their cave walls? They painted animals, and they painted scenes of the hunt. Nobody really knows why Stone Age people did this cave painting. It was probably not for adornment. Most people think it was a ritual to make the hunt successful. Another possibility is that the Stone Age artists made pictures that passed on information to other people. For example, perhaps the image of a buffalo told other hunters that there were buffalo in the area. Who were these ancient artists? They were women. The men hunted. The women gathered and painted!
