FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR What a year it has been!

If you have been to the Potawatomi Zoo recently, you may have noticed all the changes we’ve made. The Zoo is in a period of rapid growth and development that will continue for years as we fulfill our Master Plan.

It is my honor to have been offered the position of Executive Director of the Potawatomi Zoo, and I was thrilled to accept. The passion I have for our Zoo is endless and I look forward to leading the Zoo as it continues to change and grow.

The Potawatomi Zoo has been accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) since 1987. As an accredited zoo, we are required every five years to undergo a thorough reaccreditation inspection every five years. This includes a significant amount of documentation and an inspection visit by inspectors from other AZA facilities.

This past June, after months of new construction and other upgrades to the Zoo, the inspection team arrived at the Zoo. Over two and a half days, the inspection team carefully examined the physical zoo, our education programs, impact on conservation, and most importantly, animal welfare. They also considered our public impact, zoo aesthetics, and how well we are supported by our local agencies.

In September, my colleagues and I traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana, to attend the national AZA Conference where a hearing was held to determine our accreditation status. I am proud and honored to say we received full accreditation for another five years. The AZA commission particularly praised our exemplary animal welfare, wellmaintained grounds, and the great support we have from our community and the city of South Bend.

This accreditation process is what legitimizes the work we are doing here at the Potawatomi Zoo. Fewer than 10% of animal facilities registered with the USDA have achieved AZA accreditation. It sets the bar high and gives us a firm step toward achieving our most important goal: creating the best zoological institution possible for our animals and our community.

Winter Days at the Zoo Although the last day of the Potawatomi Zoo season this year is December 1, there’s still plenty of fun to be had at the Zoo in winter. The Zoo is open for The Gift of Lights in December, and there are camps, classes, and Winter Days to enjoy.

Winter Days in 2020 are scheduled for January 11, January 25, February 8, February 22, and March 7. The Zoo is open from 12-3 pm (last admission 2:30 pm) on each of those days to give visitors a very different view of the Zoo. Although some animals will be living behind-the-scenes, many Zoo animals enjoy the snow and are very active during Winter Days.

There will also be a $5 wristband available which will include an all-ages craft experience and souvenir cup with one free drink.

The craft will take place in the Learning Center classroom from 12:30 to 2:45 pm.

GEaring Up For Gift of Lights The Gift of Lights, the Zoo’s holiday lights event, will open November 29 and run 5-9 pm every Friday to Sunday through December 22 (last admission 8:30 pm). There will be special events throughout, like Give Back Weekend, the Ugly Sweater Party, and more. Santa will make an appearance most nights (see website for details).

Regular admission is $10 for adults ages 15 and over, $5 for children ages 3-14, and free for babies 2 and under.

Regular admission Gift of Lights tickets will be available for pre-sale at Martin’s Supermarkets and at the Zoo entrance every day Gift of Lights is open.

The Zoo will light up for this year’s Gift of Lights, starting November 29.

Because it is a special after-hours event, The Gift of Lights is not free to Zoo members. However, members can purchase discounted tickets at the Zoo entrance: $7 for adults ages 15 and over, $3 for children ages 3-14, and free for babies 2 and under.

The Polar Zoo Express train route will also be decorated for the season. Tickets for the Polar Zoo Express are $3 per rider over 2 years old, and include a bell, sticker, and hot chocolate sample. The train will run as weather permits.

The Gift of Lights is efficiently powered by Indiana Michigan Power, and sponsored by WNDU: This is Home, U-93: Today’s Best Music, Lazar Scientific, Inc., and Visit South Bend Mishawaka.

Camps and Classes for All Winter break day camps are a great way for kids to spend a day at the Zoo. This year’s winter break day camp theme is “Frozen Zoo.” Zoo campers will learn all about frozen habitats and investigate different methods animals use to endure the icy cold.

Winter break day camps are scheduled for December 31, 9 am-12 pm (Junior Naturalists, ages 5-6), January 2, 9 am-3 pm (Future Zoologists, ages 7-9), and January 3, 9 am-3 pm (Wild Rangers, ages 10-12). Registration for winter EdZOOcation camps has already started.

Winter classes are available for children ages 3-12 and adults.

Class topics vary by age group, but they are all designed to encourage learning about animals and conservation through games, activities, animal meet-and-greets, and discussions.

Classes allow children and adults to learn about nature and conservation through a variety of fun activities, like these Future Zoologists learning about owl diets.

Classes for children start in March, and registration opens soon. Tiny Explorers is a family class designed for children 3-4 and a parent. The three other children’s classes are Junior Naturalists, ages 5-6; Future Zoologists, ages 7-9, and Wild Rangers, ages 10-12.

There are two Curious Conservationists classes scheduled for adults 18 and up: December 8 and February 9.

A Living Legacy The Zoo is sad to announce that its male Sichuan takin, known as Krunk, passed away this fall.

Krunk moved to the Zoo in 2016. At 14, Krunk was considered a senior animal and was being treated for agerelated issues, including arthritis. Krunk did well on a range of medication for some time, but as he aged and exhibited more signs of pain, the animal care team determined that his condition was giving him a poor quality of life. The decision was made to humanely euthanize him.

Although he only lived at the Potawatomi Zoo for a short time, Krunk leaves beind a memorable legacy. He was wellloved by his primary keepers, who said he was always gentle and willing to participate in training behind the scenes. He was also a favorite of many zoo visitors, who appreciated his golden coat and were often fascinated to learn about this rare species.

Krunk was the father to five Sichuan takin kids, including two born at the Potawatomi Zoo in 2019, Patty and Emei.

The Zoo was thrilled by these births, as the Sichuan takin is a vulnerable species, native to Tibet and the provinces of Sichuan, Gansu, and Xinjiang in the People’s Republic of China.

Sichuan takins are considered a national treasure in China, and are highly protected. Only around 20 zoos in the United States have Sichuan takins. Patty and Emei, along with their mothers, Mulan and Yi Liu, will continue to live at the Potawatomi Zoo to help people learn about and appreciate this unusual animal.

Care Corner

H

ave you ever gone to the vet and were told you need to give medication to your dog or cat?

Did you feel overwhelmed after your dog or cat avoided being pilled at all costs and you BOTH ended up covered in medication? Can you imagine trying to medicate a lion, okapi, or bison?

Fortunately, we, the vet staff, work with an incredible team of dedicated keepers and commissary staff who have a ton of tricks up their sleeve to help us give medicine to our zoo animals on a daily basis.

Just like people or pets, our zoo animals require medications, supplements, and vaccinations.

Our keepers use positive reinforcement to train many of our animals to receive injections by hand in exchange for a favorite treat. Some of the big cats will lay down behind the scenes and receive vaccinations or antibiotic injections for liver or pieces of meat. Many of our animals learn to open their mouth for their keepers so we can squirt a little bit of liquid medication in.

If training doesn’t work, we may resort to pure trickery with some of the animals’ favorite menu items. Stinkerbell, a senior Reeves’ muntjac, will only take her medicine in a peanut butter and lettuce burrito. Our anteaters take medication on the backs of crickets. Sometimes we inject medicine into a mealworm and then feed it to a reptile patient. The chimps are so intelligent and suspicious of medication being placed in treats that we have to pretend to unwrap ice cream bars in front of them so they don’t know that the treat has been altered! One of the chimps even became wary of this so we had to peel a banana, mix mashed banana with vanilla ice cream and medication and then place all of that back into the banana peel and refreeze it!

One of our zoo farm goats wouldn’t take medication unless we drilled a hole in a cucumber and plugged it with peanut butter in order to hide his tablet.

Sometimes even the tastiest food can’t mask the bitter flavor of some medications. Luckily a few of our zoo animal patients have special physiology which allows us to administer medication in unusual ways. Our African bullfrog, Prince, allows us to drip his deworming medication on his back so it absorbs through his permeable amphibian skin.

Tortoises can absorb liquid through their cloaca, so some medications are delivered in a shallow bath.

As a last resort, if an animal ultimately refuses to take medication or vaccines, we can administer antibiotics, pain medication, etc., while we have them under anesthesia.

But it is always more gratifying to see the animals enjoy the special treats we cook up for them!

E

very spring, as the ground begins to thaw, you will begin to hear frog and toad calls at night. It may just sound like noise, but if you live in Indiana, you might be hearing as many as 18 different species! How can you tell them apart? And what would you do with that knowledge?

If you’ve ever been interested in learning more about your local frogs and toads, FrogWatch may be for you.

FrogWatch is a citizen science program started by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums in 1998. Currently there are 151 FrogWatch chapters in 41 states. The Potawatomi Zoo chapter teaches volunteers about the frogs and toads of northern Indiana and southern Michigan. The Zoo’s training days are February 29 and March 22, 2020.

FrogWatch volunteers learn about amphibian biology and will be taught the mating calls of the frogs and toads they may encounter. They are also taught how to monitor frog and toad populations and report the information they collect.

To monitor for FrogWatch, volunteers will choose a wetland site, such as a pond or marsh and commit to monitoring it 4 times throughout the breeding season, which runs from February to September. Monitoring occurs after dark, when the frogs and toads are most vocal. FrogWatch volunteers will collect data about the weather and which species they hear. They will also estimate the abundance of each during a 3-minute monitoring session by determining if they hear a full chorus or an individual voice.

Another important piece of information that is gathered through FrogWatch is when the frogs and toads start calling in the season, and how long their mating season lasts. This helps scientists determine if the mating season was longer this year or if the frogs emerged earlier than usual.

Finally, FrogWatch data can help scientists track where species of frogs and toads are located. Is their range expanding northward? Is it becoming more restricted?

Besides being a great way to connect with nature, FrogWatch is an invaluable resource for amphibian conservation! Amphibians are often described as a “canary in the coal mine,” meaning that studying their populations helps scientists gauge the health of the environment. The data FrogWatch collects can help researchers study and even forecast the health of an ecosystem.

Moreover, many previously abundant frog and toad species have diminished drastically in the United States and around the world. In fact, amphibians are currently the most endangered group of animals. According to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, 32% of amphibians are currently threatened with extinction.

The greatest threat facing amphibians, as in many other species, is habitat loss and degradation. Other threats include pollution, climate change, introduced species, and over-collection. Amphibians are particularly vulnerable due to a variety of factors. They have thin permeable skin, which allows them to breathe through their skin, but leaves them more vulnerable to pollutants. Also, many species will live part of their lives in water as a tadpole and part of their lives on land as an adult. This leaves them more vulnerable to habitat degradation and destruction.

In some areas of the world, chytridiomycosis, a fungal disease, has also contributed to the decline. Studies of chytridiomycosis have linked its spread to droughts which may be becoming more severe due to climate change.

How does FrogWatch help? All FrogWatch data is uploaded to a freely accessible database for scientists to use. Tracking the number of frogs and toads heard is a huge job, and FrogWatch citizen scientists can gather more data than just scientists alone. Compiling this information together allows researchers to see how the population size varies year to year on a much larger scale. This allows researchers to better determine whether populations are stable, decreasing, or increasing, and in doing so, learn about the health of the environment.

Managing Species Populations

O

ne of the most common questions staff at the Potawatomi Zoo receives is “Are these animals going to have babies?” Although the answer is often complicated, it is almost always based on the Zoo following the population recommendations of the animal’s Species Survival Plan.

Species Survival Plans, or SSPs, were started by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) in 1981.

There are now nearly 500 SSPs, all with the goal of creating healthy, genetically diverse, and demographically stable animal populations for each given species. Not only do SSPs oversee population management within AZA accredited zoos, like the Potawatomi Zoo, they work with sustainability partners and other certified facilities to enhance the conservation of these species in the wild.

Each SSP is overseen by a Taxon Advisory Group, or TAG, a team of expert advisors from different AZA facilities. In biology, a taxon is a group of organisms that form a unit, such as “marine mammals” or “amphibians.” Similar species are grouped together and then, according to the AZA website, the TAG, “coordinates, facilitates, and reviews progress toward goals for its cooperative animal management and conservation programs.” Species Survival Plan Programs are just one part of the work a Taxon Advisory Group does. TAGs also determine care practices, research priorities, ethical considerations, veterinary care, and solve other animal issues.

Each species with an SSP has a Master Plan, developed by SSP coordinators, which tells institutions what the breeding goals and other management recommendations are for the species in their care. There are three levels of SSP Programs, Red, Yellow, and Green, determined by sustainability of

breeding populations in zoos and not necessarily related to the species’ conservation status in the wild.

One way the Potawatomi Zoo participates in SSPs is by having a pair of animals for potential breeding (or by sending one of our animals to another facility for potential breeding). An example is the black tree monitors.

Black tree monitors are native to the Aru Islands near New Guinea. They’re considered vulnerable in the wild, mostly due to deforestation and the pet trade, and their trade is controlled by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, commonly known as CITES. The Zoo has three black tree monitors, a male and two females, living in the Learning Center, and they have a breeding recommendation from their SSP. Not much is known about black tree monitor breeding habits, so having a breeding group at the Zoo allows us to learn more about the best practices for breeding and encouraging population growth.

Another way the Zoo participates in species survival is by providing holding space, for an individual animal, a same-sex group, or occasionally a pair who can’t breed. Masamba, the southern white rhino who recently moved to the Zoo, is a big example of holding a species as recommended by its SSP.On the other end of the size spectrum is the Burmese star tortoise. The Zoo has three male Burmese star tortoises who live behind the scenes at the Zoo. Burmese star tortoises are native to the forests of Myanmar (formerly known as Burma, hence the species name). Less than 20 years ago, they were determined to be critically endangered, due to illegal pet and food trade. In collaboration with the government of Myanmar, wildlife conservation organizations and zoos like the Bronx Zoo began aggressive conservation efforts, including breeding programs with around 175 tortoises. Over the years, the wild population has been growing, and more than 1,000 tortoises have been released in the wild from breeding centers. organization made up of professional zoo keepers and other interested persons dedicated to professional animal care and conservation. The national AAZK fosters a professional attitude in animal keepers through publications, conferences, and chapter activities at local zoos. As well, the national AAZK and local AAZK chapters hold many fundraising events to support wild animal conservation and promote public awareness and education.

The keepers at the Potawatomi Zoo worked with the National AAZK to create our current chapter in 2014. We are pleased to be part of the national AAZK organization and we look forward to contributing to animal conservation in the coming months and years.
