Panama hats are being dusted off, designer frocks are being perused in anticipation of a purchase.

And the form is being studied as those who enjoy a flutter prepare to raid the cash point in the hope of getting lucky.

THousands of fans will flock to the world's most beautiful racecourse for the

five-day festival, which opens its doors for business on Tuesday.

And with the increased investment from Qatar, the meeting just got richer. THe pot for the eight key races has increased to ÂŁ5million.

THe event is now known as the Qatar Goodwood Festival, of course, after a 10year sponsorship deal was signed with Qatar in 2014.

But however the festival is branded, it is always the rich history, tradition and horse-racing heritage that is first past the post with festival-goers. For as well as Turn to Page 3

SCHOOLS across the county could be forced to axe staff as they wait for extra funding from the government.

Headteachers have been campaigning for more support since it was revealed those in West Sussex get £400 less per year per pupil than the average across the country, and more than £2,000 less than the best-funded schools.

It has left schools facing the prospect of cutting staff to make ends meet.

THe government has promised a new national funding formula and £930,000 has been pledged until then — but when shared among schools in the county this amounts to less than £10 per pupil.

Headteacher of Bishop Luffa School in Chichester Nick Taunt said: “Every school has had to make a staff reduction.

“Schools aren’t profit making so the national insurance contributions go up and schools face increasing costs of between £250,000 and £500,000 without any means of paying for them.

“Although they said pupil income was protected the costs have been increased.

Across West Sussex it’s between a five and eight per cent cut in our budgets.

THat’s a significant amount for any school. All the primary and secondary schools are in the same position.”

unsuccessful. Mr Taunt added: “We've been told to wait until fairer funding is in place but that won’t be for September 2017 and probably not for several years.

“Government plans to taper rebudgeting so there won’t be any extra funding, so schools that are at the top of the funding per pupil will see their funding reduce while schools like us in local authorities will see funding gradually increase.

“THat will take time to happen — it could be four or five years from now before there is a fully backed fair funding formula. It leaves us in a difficult situation.

“It means staffing is cut back and support for children with particular needs comes under pressure. It’s not an easy situation. Parents have been extremely supportive about our campaign. We want them to know what the impact on government funding is on the education of their children.”

Race-goers ready for Glorious Goodwood From front page

Amanda teams up with TV star Will for new campaign EXCLUSIVE

by Carl Eldridge news@sussexpost.co.uk AMANDA Newton has joined forces with TV star Will Mellor to launch a campaign encouraging disabled people to get active.

Chichester-born Amanda, who was paralysed in a cycling accident last year, teamed up with the Broadchurch star to promote the Together We Will scheme that aims to put every disabled person in touch with someone who can recommend activities for them.

Mum-of-four Amanda, who now lives in Yapton, has been chosen to be an ambassador for the campaign.

She will video her day-to-day activities

to try to inspire disabled people to get involved.

And Amanda says she and was delighted to pair up with Mellor, who was also had roles in both Casualty and Hollyoaks, for the launch in Manchester last week.

Actor Mellor, is promoting the new drive in memory of his sister Joanne, who was born with Marfan’s syndrome and had both physical and mental disabilities. Joanne, who loved to cycle, died in 2013.

Will said: "I’m proud to be part of this campaign which helps to encourage disabled people to be more active. It’s about everyone coming together to have fun and become healthier.

“My sister had Marfan’s syndrome which affected her physically as well as

with her learning. She sadly passed away in 2013, but I recall fondly how much we loved being active as a family together.

"THerefore, I’m really looking forward to meeting our ambassadors and hearing their stories.

"We can all make a positive change and support more people to reap the benefits of an active lifestyle.”

Amanda said: "THis campaign is aiming to encourage people of all disabilities to become active in any way shape or form that they can.

"We have all come together to try to make this happen as best we can, as there really are so many disabled people who, for one reason or another, do not take part in any physical activity.

"Will is involved as an ambassador as his sister was disabled and he helped

teach her to ride a bike. THis went on to lead to her having enough confidence to go to college.

"Initially the campaign will last for three months. During this time I’ll be recording my life. THis again will then hopefully receive various forms of media coverage.

"I feel so proud and privileged and honoured to not only support this campaign but to be a major spokesperson for it.

"I have the opportunity to be a big influence in hopefully helping people with disabilities to become involved in sport and experience the same happiness and joy it gives to me in so many different ways."

Smoke alarm saves couple as home is gutted by fierce blaze

by Carl Eldridge news@sussexpost.co.uk A COUPLE escaped a blaze which completely gutted their motorhome — thanks to a smoke alarm, says a fire chief.

THe pair, in their 60s, were woken by the detector when the fire broke out at a caravan park on Bracklesham Lane, near Chichester on Monday.

Fire crews from East Wittering and Chichester were called to the blaze, which is believed to have started accidentally.

Station Commander Marvin Smith said: "THe smoke alarm saved the day

here. THe couple were fast asleep and had it not been for the smoke detector activating and giving them time to escape this incident would have had a very different outcome.

"Without a smoke alarm, a small fire can develop undetected into a much more serious one.

"We'd urge everyone to test their detectors regularly and make sure they have an escape plan in the event of a fire.

"Don't forget we fit smoke detectors where appropriate as part of a Home Safety Visit and we prioritise those who are over 65 or believed to be at higher risk from fire."

...on the racing calendar, the festival is also a fixture of the country’s society calendar.

And the fashion stakes are just as vitality important as the sport of kings, some would argue.

Goodwood has always had its own distinctive style and this year sees the return of the popular L’Ormarins Best Dressed Competition next Friday.

On the course, the nation's favourite jockey Frankie Dettori is aiming to reach a milestone of 3,000 winners at the meeting.

It was at the track back in June 1987 that the Dettori story started when the then 16-year-old apprentice rider won his first race on Lizzie Hare.

Dettori said: "It goes without saying that Goodwood holds a special place in my heart as I had my first winner there and your first winner you never forget.

"It's been a great journey and it would be ironic if I did ride my 3,000th winner at Goodwood but if it doesn’t happen I am not going to cry about it."

Show-stopping animals are a real breed apart ANIMALS were on show at the 31st Rare and Traditional Breeds Show.

THe Weald and Downland Open Air Museum in Singleton, Chichester, welcomed more than 4,400 people to see cattle, sheep, pigs and goats at one of the biggest shows of its kind in the South East with 600 animals on show.

Marketing manager Jenny Rudd said: “It was a lovely sunny day. If you like farm animals then it’s somewhere you can see these traditional breeds that you don’t get to see anywhere else.

“People want to get to grips with where their food comes from too. It’s unusual to get to talk to breeders but they were happy to talk about keeping animals for pleasure and for food.”

CHICHESTER University is to have a spanking new erection at its Bognor Regis campus and it has been hailed as a boon for the area with an extra 1,500 students a year boosting the ecomony.

But one miffed councillor who voted against the project told yours truly the proposed building will be an eyesore.

"But any new building that can be seen to be ugly is simply called 'iconic' these days. It's all rather sad," said our wagger of the chin.

IT'S a circuitous way to solve a stuck-in-the-loo situation, but one can't argue at the quick-thinking of a pupil at Bishop Luffa school who faced this problem. The answer?

Tragic dad electrocuted as young son looked on

by Ruth Scammell news@sussexpost.co.uk CHICHESTER dad Alfie Matthews was electrocuted in front of his six-year-old son in a freak accident at a barn, an inquest has heard.

Mr Matthews, 39, died at Pond Farm in East Ashling near Chichester after the crane on the top of his 7.5 tonne truck hit electricity cables on July 18 last year.

THe power of it forced him away from the vehicle and he landed on the ground.

Mr Matthews, from Priors Leaze Lane in Hambrook, near Chichester, was collecting hay to feed his horses.

Elewitness Craig Richardson was also at the site to collect hay for his horses. He said: “I was tying down the bales to the roof of my van. Alfie drove past us and we were saying 'hello'.

“He was loading the hay onto his van and he got out of the truck. I had my back to him. I just heard a bang and some fire came out of the wheels. THere was a flash of flames from his truck.

“He was by his truck struggling away.

I shouted at Alfie’s boy to get away from the truck.”

Dennis Bulbeck is the owner of the land, having purchased it back in 1983.

He was at the farm with Mr Richardson and friend Pietre Scutt. He said: “THree of us were opening the van up. He drove past us and I pointed to him where to go and that was it.

"He knew where to go because he had been there so many times before.

“I heard a bang and I saw a big flash.

Alfie was laid on the ground. Pietre went across to him. I threw my phone to him.

He dragged him out of the way because he was still alive.

“His son was out on the field.”

Mr Bulbeck added that he couldn’t understand why Mr Matthews had decided to raise the crane.

THe court heard how there was an incident around 30 years ago where a concrete lorry hit the overhead electricity cables and cut the power to the site, but there weren’t any incidents since then.

Mr Bulbeck, under legal advice, refused to answer a question from the coroner about whether or not he gave advice to people warning them about the overhead cables when they came onto the site.

Pietre Scutt is good friends with Mr Bulbeck and often takes a walk to the farm to walk the dogs and to have a chat.

As a former retained firefighter, he carried out CPR on Mr Matthews.

He said “We were just talking to Dennis

“I’m a strong chap and I help Dennis sometimes because he’s got breathing difficulties. We were loading up the vehicle in front of us with some hay.

“I heard this huge bang. I looked up in amazement at what was going on. I saw Alfie being blown away from the vehicle.

He fell face first onto the ground.

“He fell away from the vehicle. He was on the controls and it hit the cables.

“For some reason it pushed him away from the vehicle. It was all a bit of a blur.

“He was falling face forwards towards me. I made the decision to go across and pull him away. His son was running around - poor chap.

“He was running around me and his father and saying is his father going to be ok.

"Dennis gave me his phone and he went to the road to make sure that the emergency services knew where they were going.

“I held him back and gave him chest compressions repetitively. THen the paramedics turned up.”

Mr Matthews was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham where he was pronounced dead.

THe jury were told that there was one main sign on the site warning people about the power cables.

Since Mr Matthews’ death, the power cables which are situated next to the barn have been buried underground.

THe jury concluded a narrative verdict, confirming that Mr Matthews died as the result of an accident.

THe Health and Safety Executive is still deciding whether to prosecute over the death of Alfred Matthews.

YOUNGSTERS in Chichester are being challenged to take a break from their smart phones at two free activity days.

Chichester District Council is offering children between eight and 14 the chance to kick off the holidays with the activity days, which are at THe Academy, Selsey on July 26, and Tangmere Village Centre on July 28 from 2pm until 5pm.

THere will be a variety of activities to try such as rock climbing, gymnastics, bouncing boots and making a fruit mocktail. THe Novium Museum will

be going to Selsey, with artefacts and a cardboard armour making workshop.

Councillor Eileen Lintill said: "THe council's youth engagement team is encouraging young people to try something new and our activity days are a fantastic place to do this.

"It can be difficult thinking of things to do in the holidays and it can be tempting to spend time on your smart phone. THis gives youngsters a chance to test their skills and try something new — it could turn into a new hobby."

Dogs' 24-hr charity dip POOCHES will take the plunge in a 24-hour charity swimathon.

And Chichester hound Buster, featured in last week’s Post, will join his pal Toffee, above, who has survived cancer, to lead the dip at Splash Hounds dog pool, Shripney.

Toffee lost a stone through swimming.

Organiser Liam Nicholson said: “We’re raising money to research the Alabama Rot disease which kills dogs, and the Sussex-based ALSAR search dogs. We've had a super response from clients who will be bringing dogs in through the night for 24 hours."

Members of the public watched demonstrations, spoke to officers about their jobs and even tried out some arresting manoeuvres of their own at a sun-kissed event.

And there was a serious side to all the hilarity as the day helped raise money for charity at the event at the station in Kingsham Road.

Police were joined by fellow emergency services staff in the shape of firefighters from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service who were also on hand.

THey delighted youngsters as they showed off their vehicles and chatted

about the life-saving work that they do every day.

Laura Marmolejo, who is the public engagement officer based at Chichester Police Station, said: “It’s so important to us because we want people to get to know local officers and have some fun and find out about what Sussex Police does and the different departments that we have.

“It’s so very important to us that people know that they can come along and talk to us.

“For the younger ones, we wanted them to come and see what we are about too. It was a great day.”

Grandmother Sandra Johnson took grandson Joshua to the event and was enthusiastic about the activities.

She said: "It seemed like all the kids who came along had a ball and those who organsied it deserve a lot of credit."

A27 plans 'won't ease snarl-ups' PLANS to improve the Chichester bottleneck on the A27 have been labelled as a "sticking plaster" that won't reduce traffic snarl-ups.

Highways England is consulting on five options, which include new slip roads and improved signalling at junctions.

Spokesman Ken Simmonds said the £100m improvements would "definitely ease the congestion".

Campaigners Best4Chichester believes the city needs a bypass.

THe group's Chris Page said: "It's a sticking plaster job. We were told the budget would be up to £250million which might have allowed proper improvements to the road system.

"Now we're told it's about £100m so it's another penny-pinching job."

Time capsule to give folk of future a lesson in our lives

Event organisers at a Chichester care home hope the time capsule will give future generations an insight into life in 2016.

And they recruited school children to help them select the items that they felt would provide an idea of how we live today in Chichester. Pupils at Jessie

We also laid on lots of drinks and cakes for the children and our residents and the whole event was a very happy occasion."

THE fragrant smells of Thai food wafted through the Chichester air last weekend.

The Chichester Thai Festival was held at Oaklands Park on Saturday and Sunday as people enjoyed the exotic food from Thailand.

There was also some Thai dancing, Thai massages, children’s entertainment and a costume display.

A Thai fortune teller was on hand to help predict the future and there was entertainment and music for all to enjoy.

Food ranged from hot and spicy Thai curries to spring rolls and spicy noodles.

Families packed out the park as they enjoyed a taste of Thailand in the heart of Chichester

GARDENING fans and festivalgoers are in for a treat as BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time is set to record at West Dean Gardens’ Chilli Fiesta.

Eric Robson and his panel of horticultural experts will answer chilli-related questions from the studio audience in an hour long recording in the auditorium at the gardens on Friday, August 5.

Chilli Fiesta, which runs from August 5 to 7, is now in its 21st year and attracts 25,000 visitors.

Studio audience places are limited and tickets will be available from the Chilli Hub at Chilli Fiesta between 4pm to 5pm on August 5 on a first-come, first-served basis.

THe Gardeners' Question Time panel at Chilli Fiesta will be Bob Flowerdew, Bunny Guinness, Christine Walkden and Matt Wilson.

THe show will go out on BBC Radio Four on August 12, at 3pm and repeated on August 14 at 2pm.

THe recording kicks off an exciting weekend of gardening activities in the Chilli Hub. Mark Diacono, food writer, grower and photographer at Otter Farm, will appear on Sunday.

Harbour clams and cockles 'serious health risk' warning

by Carl Eldridge sport@sussexpost.co.uk SHELLFISH-LOVING collectors of clams and cockles from Chichester Harbour have been warned their harvest could be poisonous and poses a potential "serious health risk".

And restaurants, cafes and food businesses in the Chichester area have been told that they should exercise “extreme caution” after the discovery of a harmful bacteria.

Chichester District Council has alerted residents and businesses who collect shellfish from beds in the Prinsted area of the harbour (pictured, left) that they could affect health.

Councillor Roger Barrow, the council’s cabinet member for the environment, says would-be collectors should put on hold their activities until the situation is clarified.

The council's warning relates specifically to clams and cockles from the area.

Analysis of tests carried out on samples gathered by the council's health protection team showed that they are carrying the potentially harmful bacteria.

Food hygiene regulations require any food business that collects from this area to send any of the clams and cockles for treatment to kill off bacteria He said: "It has been found that the bacteria found pose a serious risk to people's health and our advice to residents is not to collect any shellfish until further notice.

"Food businesses need to abide by strict regulations to ensure the safety of the public. We would like to reassure residents that our Health Protection team is working hand in hand with CEFAS (The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science) and the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and is closely monitoring the situation.

"More tests on clams and cockles from these beds are due to take place and the team is keeping its decision to downgrade the area under review.

"We will, of course, keep people updated but in the meantime I would definittely urge people to exercise extreme caution until we have some further information."

Brave Diane's wing walking in memory of late husband CHICHESTER University's £18m expansion of its campus in Bognor has received planning permission.

It means 1,500 extra students will be studying at the university. THe go-ahead for the engineering and digital technology park will see the new places created by 2023/24.

THe first undergraduates are expected to arrive in two years' time. THe development is estimated to be worth an additional £12.4m a year to the area's economy.

It is expected 350 jobs will be created within seven years. THe unanimous approval was given by Arun District Council's development control committee. University vicechancellor Professor Clive Behagg said: "I believe this technology park is the right scheme, developed at the right time in the right place.

"I've worked in Bognor for 40 years.

Post JOHN Fogden, former Chichester head custodian and macebearer, died last week, aged 75. He was proud to carry out his task of taking the antique mace to Chichester Cathedral in the annual ‘Mace Day’ procession. He was employed by the city council in 1988 and retired in 2006. He assisted with casual custodian duties in retirement.

Chocolate day's sweet

FAMILIES who lost loved ones at St Wilfrid’s Hospice gathered to remember them. THe popular rainbow day takes place at the hospice on Grosvenor Road, Chichester, each year.

THe hospice has also created a sea of sunflower tributes dedicated to loved ones within their garden this summer.

Susie Norton is one of the managers at the hospice. She said: “It’s a day for the bereaved families to come together to write messages to their loved ones and to meet the other families.

“It’s important for them to maintain that link with the hospice. It was a very good day. Far more people attended than have done in previous years.”

THe charity cares for children with life limiting and life threatening illnesses and their families.

It was organised by Becci Knight whose son Harry, six, suffers from chronic lung disease. She said: “THey have been amazing for me and my family and I wanted to do give something back.

“THey have a nurse who comes to the home and provides support. It’s much needed emotional support during an horrific time for a lot of families.”

Pupils win night at the museum

YOUNGSTERS from a Chichester school spent the night at a THe Novium Museum after winning a writing competition.

THe Year 5 class from Central CofE Junior School won the sleepover in the annual writing competition, tied in with the museum's "Murray or None" exhibition.

THe exhibition tells the story of naval hero, Admiral Sir George Murray. It relays how he played his part in world events, as well as leaving a legacy in Chichester.

THe children enjoyed a torchlit hunt in the museum, craft activities based on Admiral Murray’s adventures and a story based on the German legend of "Why the Sea is Salty", before sleeping among the exhibits.

Pupil Bailey Burrows said: “We expected there to be ghosts but it was just really fun.” For the

competition, children had to write a letter on behalf of Admiral Murray to potential recruits for the Royal Navy in t1803.

To make entries stand out, pupils researched information about the Royal Navy in the 1800s.

THey tea-stained the paper to make it look authentic and rolled the letters into scrolls and sealed them with red wax seals and ribbons. All the letters were placed inside a green chest which was presented to the museum.

Teacher Michaela Cooke said: “THe children excited and proud that one of their letters won.”

Freedom of city is a 'wonderful honour', says spaceman Tim

by Carl Eldridge news@sussexpost.co.uk CHICHESTER'S heroic astronaut Major Tim Peake admits he is looking forward to his first trip back to his home-town city.

THe spaceman spoke of his pride at being granted the freedom of Chichester when he made his first public appearance last week at Farnborough International since landing back on

Earth. Major Peake also told of the adjustment he is having to get used to since he returned home in mid-June from a much-heralded six-month spell in the International Space Station.

He said: "THe Freedom of Chichester is a really wonderful honour and I certainly look forward to my first trip back to the city.

"It still seems fairly surreal that less than four weeks ago I was on-board the International Space Station travelling

THe Freedom of Chichester is an honour that was first noted by the city in 1901.

Peake is thought to be heading for Chichester early next year for the ceremony, having accepted the invitation to receive the award, which was delivered to him during his stint in space.

Meanwhile, Peake has at last been awarded his medal after running the full distance of the London Marathon in space.

Starting at the same time on April 24 as his fellow runners on Earth, Peake covered the 26.2-mile challenge on a treadmill aboard the International Space Station.

Peake's time of three hours, 35 minutes and 21 seconds set a Guinness World Record for the fastest marathon in space while his enterprise was estimated to have covered more than 53,000 miles by the time he completed the attempt.

He was running for THe Prince's Trust and after landing back on Earth on June 19 he has finally been presented with his medal.

A case of: 'Come on you Gunners' STUDENTS from Chichester College hauled their way to a best-ever finish at the Junior Leaders Field Gun competition.

THe event, held at HMS Collingwood in Fareham, saw 17 teams competing to transport a field gun and equipment over a distance of 170 yards in the fastest time.

THe Chichester College squad qualified for the final then faced daunting opposition including an experienced HMS Neptune crew, but they completed a clean run and came fourth – the highest placing the college has achieved.

However, BFG makes friends with orphan Sophie, and together they battle bad giants and catch good dreams.

THe BFG is played by Mark Rylance while Sophie is played by Ruby Barnhill, who learned six pages of dialogue from heart for her initial audition. THe film also boasts an impressive cast including Bill Hader, Rafe Spall, and Jemaine Clement. John Williams scored the film, ensuring that the whole event will definitely not be a snozzcumber.

Rox Returns to Bognor this July!

Rox Music and Arts Office The University of Chichester, Bognor Regis Campus, Upper Bognor Road, West Sussex PO21 1HR roxmusicandarts.org Rox returns to Bognor on July 30th & 31st, albeit on a smaller scale. Since the cancellation of the main FREE festival earlier this year, the Rox crew have been working in the background to bring an eclectic line up of music to be hosted in various venues throughout the town.

The traditional Folk/acoustic Secret Garden Stage has been moved to Hotham park with around 30 acts appearing over the weekend including ‘Fidget’ (pictured) who appear on the Sunday at 3.00pm. There will also be a variety of stalls and kid’s entertainment, a real ale bar and food outlets to ‘enhance’ the ambience of the chilled out Secret Garden

One of the largest planetariums in the country

One of the largest planetariums in the country, the South Downs Planetarium is the place to go to learn more about the universe.

The registered educational charity is run by a team of dedicated volunteers and astronomy enthusiasts, keen to share their knowledge of space with you.

Operating throughout the year, the planetarium is not open every day but is available for private bookings on any day of the week.

It could be a special show for private groups, clubs and societies during the day, at night or at the weekend.

Around eight or nine presentations take place every month which are open to the general public.

Are you a teacher, keen for your class to learn more about our galaxy? The planetarium takes advance bookings for school visits and youth groups to enable youngsters to open their eyes to space.

This will now be housed in Legends Bar. A full line up of live bands will feature throughout Saturday and Eddie Stenner will be taking over on Sunday with his experienced DJ’s, many of whom have featured in the Rox weekend in previous years.

The William Hardwicke will be running the successful Ibiza Rox on Saturday which was trialled at the Festival last year.

In the evening, Mud Club reforms for a special session which will also be giving a nod to Prince with special dance tracks.

It’s all change on Sunday as live bands take over for the day.

The Claremont in West Street are also planning to host a mixture of DJ’s a live entertainment, we are in dialogue with other venues at the time of going to press. More news coming soon so watch this space!

Arundel Castle in West Sussex is set to play host to the world’s longest international jousting competition, with top challengers from across the globe taking part in its spectacular Jousting and Medieval Tournament Week (26-31 July).

In a new twist, this year’s Joust will feature a female competitor for the first time ever, with Marie Baron representing the Kingdom of France alongside her partner Luc Petillot. 2016 will also see the Kingdom of Norway make their debut at Arundel Castle’s Jousting and Medieval Tournament Week.

Overseeing proceedings in the shadow of the mighty Castle will be Kyle Van Dolah-Evans. Kyle will be the first Lady Marshall in Arundel’s history - she will be the head judge and supreme voice of authority on the field, proving that girl power is alive and well at Arundel Castle.

Now in its 9th year, the Jousting and Medieval Tournament Week is undoubtedly the highlight of Arundel Castle’s open season, with six intense, action packed days – and plenty of fierce rivalries along the way.

No rivalry runs as deep as that of reigning champions, the Kingdom of England, and the Kingdom of France.

Year-on-year the French team has come up against the six time champions, the Kingdom of England, and have been consistently denied a victory – something the French competitors are hoping to rectify this year.

The Kingdom of Poland is returning in 2016, and will be keen to go one better than their 2015 performance

Flair, care and style on show at No. 1 Northgate Think high end, impressive food at even more impressive prices I CANNOT speak highly enough about the meal me and my partner were lucky enough to enjoy at this stylish restaurant this week.

I think I must be the only Chichester resident to have never stepped in the door to the eatery before now – and trust me, when I say it will not be the last time I go here.

No.1 Northgate is simply a class above other establishments – it exudes class, sophistication and really top notch food but it manages to pull it off in a beautifully decorated setting, whilst putting the customer at complete ease straight from the word go.

THere is none of the pretention that comes with food and service of such a high quality in some restaurants, just friendly and attentive service with stunning dishes that the head chef really takes care over.

We were welcomed by our waiter Stephen, who let us pick our own table and throughout the entire dinner struck the perfect balance between being attentive whilst giving us our space.

THe service was quick and efficient but never rushed – and Stephen’s knowledge of the menu really showed through.

We were given the A la Carte menu as well as the specials to pick from and the food selection was so great, it was hard to make a decision on what sounded the nicest.

I opted to stick with the specials, ordering the tempura battered king prawns with chilli mayonnaise to start while my partner ordered from the other menu, choosing the pan fried king scallops with grilled chorizo, celeriac puree and poached Quails eggs.

It was superb.

I barely heard a peep from my other half as he dived in, and afterwards he said it was the best starter he had tasted in years.

My prawns were juicy and succulent and cooked to perfection with just the right amount of batter – perfectly matched with the slightly spicy chilli mayonnaise.

For mains I chose the rosemary and garlic roasted rump of lamb with Dauphinoise

Again there were no complaints – perfectly cooked food with great portion sizes, that left us both arguing the case of whose dinner was better.

Head chef John Banham came out to find out how our food was going down, and whether there was anything else we needed.

THis was a lovely touch that really set off the meal and showed the level of love that goes into making what really were sublime dishes.

John explained the restaurant had had something of an overhaul recently, and told us how lovely it was to work as part of a small team who got on well. THe fact that everyone working there gets along and works together was evident from the start and really makes for a lovely atmosphere.

THey are trying to do things differently at No.1 Northgate.THe emphasis is on excellent food at reasonable prices, which I think it already delivers.

But the emphasis now is on making sure families feel welcome, whilst bringing in fresh and seasonal produce to offer something different each night. from fish and chip nights, to tapas night and a roast dinner on a Sunday - something I will definitely be going back to try at £12.50 a roast - a bargain.

INGREDIENTS • 1 whole chicken (about 1kg/2lb 3oz), spatchcocked • salt and freshly ground black pepper

FOR THE PIRIPIRI SAUCE • 6-12 fresh red chillies, depending on how hot you want it • 1 tbsp garlic, blanched and chopped • 1 tsp salt flakes • ½ tsp oregano • ½ tbsp paprika • 100ml/3½fl oz olive oil • 50ml/1¾fl oz red wine vinegar

TO SERVE • chips • salad

METHOD 1. To make the piri-piri sauce, preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Place the chillies on a roasting tray and roast them for 10 minutes.

2. Cool and roughly chop the chillies. Place the chillies, garlic, salt, oregano, paprika, olive oil and vinegar in a saucepan, and simmer for 2-3 minutes.

3. Allow the mixture to cool, then blend it to a purée in a jug blender or food processor.

Store in a lidded container at room temperature; it will keep for about a month. Shake before using.

6. Season the marinated chicken, and cook it on the griddle pan for 2-3 minutes on each side, until golden brown.

7. Transfer the griddled chicken to a roasting tray and roast in the oven for 30 minutes, until cooked through. Alternatively, place the chicken on a medium heat barbecue, covered, for 1015 minutes on both sides or until cooked through, basting regularly with the remaining piri-piri sauce.

8. Serve with chips and salad.

4. Place the spatchcocked chicken in a sealable plastic bag. Add half the piri-piri sauce, spreading it evenly over the chicken. Seal and marinate in the refrigerator for at least one hour.

5. Preheat the oven to 200C/390F/Gas 6, and preheat a large griddle pan on the hob. Alternatively, light your barbecue.

There is something about the garden at Denmans which is quite unlike any other in Britain, for its display is not only to do with flower colour, but foliage form, textures and, of course, as it moves to A utumn, with foliage colour as well. Although the garden is four acres in size, its layout is such that the visitor enjoys many small areas within the overall, for it is punctuated with pieces of statuary, a well designed pot or a warm sitting corner. One of the most interesting features in the garden is the use of gravel. It is used both to walk on and as a growing medium so that you progress through the plantings rather than past them.

The walled garden bursts with foliage masses, old fashioned roses, perennials and herbs in a glorious disarray - foliage colour being as important as flower colour. The old flint walls provide further shelter to an already favoured part of the garden, so that the effect is quite stunning. At the bottom of the garden there is a large pond which a family of moorhens has taken over.

Early in the year the chicks bob in a line across it like wind-up toys.

The conservatory is alive with the chatter of budgerigars and a larger area for frost-tender plants.

For gardeners who want to replicate something of Denmans special quality, knowledgeable staff at the plant centre will be happy to advise and with its large and varied stock of perennials and shrubs at very reasonable prices, there is always something to tempt.

And if that isn’t enough, there is also the multi-award winning fully licensed Garden Cafe which serves a selection of light lunches, coffees, teas and a variety of delicious cakes. With seating either alfresco or inside in the beautiful covered terrace area, which is filled with orchids, the cafe, with the gentle strings of classical music in the background, is the perfect stop either with or without a visit to the adjoining garden.

Denmans Garden is open all year round, daily from 10am to 4pm excluding a few days at Christmas.

Denmans are also available for coach and group bookings at reduced prices. My Sisters' House WELCOME to our latest column provided

by My Sisters’ House CIC Arun & Chichester Women’s Centre.

These columns will draw on, and briefly question, relevant issues in the Post circulation area and shows existing community provision that can help.

It is not a direct promotion of the centre's services but raises issues and increases access to what is available.

UNIQUE clothing is being provided by a Bognor Regis shop.

Makers Boutique officially opened last Saturday after a prelaunch visit from West Sussex County Council leader, Cllr Louise Goldsmith, pictured above right.

Makers Boutique is the retail outlet for the upcycled clothes made by volunteers and apprentices for My Sisters' House Community Interest Company Women's Centre. It is located at 78 London Road.

Cllr Goldsmith called the work of the centre inspirational.

Annabell Alexander, who chairs the company, said: "Donated clothes and textiles are used to design and produce unique garments.

"THe project began designing ladies clothes, but more recently the range has included bespoke children's clothes.

"THe team also produce cushions, dolls and many other interesting and unique items.

"One of their best sellers is bunting made to order for celebrations and some for new baby's bedrooms."

Pictured below are apprentice Jade Sherwill, cutting the ribbon at the official opening, with Helen Downes and Marion Wells, who are part of the volunteer sewing team.

THe shop is open from 10am until 4pm Monday to Saturday.

Items can also be purchased through its Etsy page or from the My Sisters Makers page on Facebook.

THe sales from Makers Boutique supports the work of My Sisters' House CIC Women's Centre with its aim of inspiring women to live their potential.

THe women's centre supports women with any problems from domestic violence, financial problems, to going back to work.

TIME banking is a way of giving and receiving to build supportive networks and strong communities, building on the magic of “pay it forward,” one good turn leading to another and another.

THe principle of the timebank is that everyone has skills, knowledge and abilities to offer that could benefit someone. Everyone’s time is valued equally, so one hour of time given = one time credit.

THe benefits of the timebank are endless as every member who signs up has something to contribute. It is also a great way to help someone in need or to combat loneliness.

THis initiative, funded

by West Sussex County Council, is being run through Aldingbourne Trust’s My Network Hub, which offers sign posting support to adults with learning disabilities who are not eligible to receive paid services.

THe Bognor Regis Timebank was launched in January, sharing over 125 hours of time to date. Members have been

David is one of the leading volunteers at the F.A.S.T. Museum on the airport's perimeter. He will start his illustrated talk by explaining all about early military flying.

Starting with a man carrying balloons, he will progress through kites and dirogibles right up to the modern era at the airport.

Special mention will be made of Samuel Franklin Cody and his first powered, heavier than air, controlled sustained flight in the UK.

I am aware some Arun residents have voiced concerns about recent media articles reporting a rise in hate crimes in the wake of the EU referendum result.

I want to reassure residents that this has not been the picture in Arun, where I have it on authority from Sussex Police there has been no rise in reported incidents of this kind.

I wish to make it absolutely clear that, as a council, we will not tolerate discrimination of any kind.

Everybody has the right to feel safe in their community and any kind of hate crime is wholly unacceptable, whatever the circumstances. Arun District Council -working together with its public sector partners including Sussex Police - has worked hard for many years to ensure that migration into the district, be it national or international, is carefully managed to maintain community cohesion.

In the context of a national picture, Arun remains a very safe place to live, work or visit. THis is something we are proud of and work hard to preserve.

Arun has seen the successful integration of a wide range of migrating communities over many years and this has been achieved through education and positive engagement.

Any racially motivated hate crime in the district should always be reported to Sussex Police so the force, Arun District Council and other public sector partners can continue to monitor any community tensions.

THe current assessment remains low. If you feel you witnessed, or been affected by, this type of behaviour, please report this to the police by phoning 101 or emailing 101@sussex.pnn.police. uk. A GOOD of exhibits made Bognor Regis Horticultural Society's summer show a success.

THe blooms were judged by Peter Collett. As always, he managed to combine tips on growing and showing across the whole range of flowers, pot plants through to fruit and vegetables. He congratulated members for coping with this season's difficult weather conditions.

Cups were awarded for best sweet peas by Melissa Hauffe.

Best rose award was won by Irene Wood and was a Duchess of Cornwall bloom.

THe best in show trophy was won by Bet Chapman, pictured above, for her display of six matching fuschia blooms. THeir variety is unknown because the plant was a gift.

Coming up will see its members take up an invitation to visit Lambeth Palace and gardens in August and September will be their autumn show.

New members are always very welcome. Meetings are held at the Jubilee Hall, off Chalcraft Lane, on the fourth THursday of each month.

A colourful history of the city's iconic Market Cross OVER the years, Chichester’s Market Cross has become a well recognised feature.

It is said to have been built in 1501 by Bishop Edward Story, who paid £10 to the Mayor of Chichester for ground on which it is built. THe Bishop allowed peasants to trade without paying a toll provided they could stand under the cross. Bishop Story died in 1503 and left £25 a year in his will for the its upkeep.

THe Cross was built on the site of an earlier wooden construction erected by Bishop Rede (1369-1385) close to the original Roman roads. THe Cross is an eight-sided structure made of Caen stone, and has a central column

which is supported by eight flying buttresses.

Around the base of the column is a low stone seating area. Each side has an arch carved with the Bishop's mitre, or headdress, and bosses of demi-angels.

THe cross has suffered damage and seen many alterations. In 1642, during the Civil War, major damage was done to the statues that adorned the cross. In 1664 a bronze bust of Charles I was placed in a niche on the Cross.

THe bust, by Hubert Le Sueur, was presented to the city during the reign of Charles II. THe original bust has long since been removed and was replaced with a fibreglass copy in

Over the years there have been many inscriptions, most of them now faded, dedicated to the people who have helped to shape the cross as we see it today.

In 1724, Lady Farrington paid for clocks to be added on three sides of the structure.

To mark her gift, the empty niche on the South side was filled with an inscription.

THe decision to only have three clocks was not popular and so, in 1746, the clocks were removed by Charles 2nd Duke of Richmond and replaced with four new dials.

THe Cross ceased to serve its original purpose in 1808, when the increased population of the city meant a more extensive market area was required and a large market house was built in North Street.

At this time it was proposed to demolish the Cross as it was considered a nuisance.

Harry Annals was first for the club and 10th overall in 29.44. Jess THomson finished third in her category in 36.10. Anna-Kari Enes did the run in 36.48 with Susi Briggs third with 41.08.

Another 5 mile race took place at Queen Elizabeth country park, Hants.

First to finish the cross-country course for the club was Tony Holcombe in 43.31. Sarah Stothard and Rebecca Jones sprinted to the finish with Stothard winning by a second.

THe race also saw Amanda Worne continue her marathon preparation with her bike-chair, finishing in 1.07.59.

Simon Bodsworth and Jade Fish ran in the Southdowns Midnight Marathon along South Downs Way to Cocking and back. Simon completed it in 5.17. Jade took 6 hours.

With the growing trend of white collar shows over the past 10 years came the opportunity for Harrison to fulfil that desire.

And so in April 2012, after whipping himself into shape at VK gym, Harrison boxed in the popular Queensbury Fight League, a rising semi-pro outfit, beating Manchester's Paul Hayes, a man 20 years his junior, making a remarkable comeback from a 23-year hiatus from competitive boxing.

So with only one loss from eight fights in the last four years, the twofisted fireball will be confident of beating Clay, also a friend of mine, from Portsmouth.

"I just really want to go out with a bang," said Harrison. "I started training once more to lose some weight at first but got the urge to fight again.

"As you get older though, you do start to feel the punches a bit more so I think this will definitely be my last hurrah."

I have sparred many rounds with the old warhorse and can verify he is as game, tough and fit as any young pro I've been in with.

I'd advise anyone to get to the Arun Leisure Centre to watch a great evening's boxing.

And to see the swansong of a man who is not just an inspiration to mature athletes, but to younger ones as well.

MATTHEW Geffen took four wickets but couldn’t stop Chichester Priory Park 1st XI suffering a defeat at Burgess Hill in Premier League 1st XI Division 3.

Geffen bowled four opponents for 21 runs with two maidens from 10.1 overs but it wasn’t the visitors’ day with the bat. Chichester elected to bat but could only manage 81 for 10 (24.4 overs) with captain Jonathon Heaven scoring 20, and Peter Lamb hitting 15 at St Johns Park.

THey had to contend with Burgess Hill’s Peter Bellingham who took 5-42 before the home side went into bat.

Geffen did his best to stifle Burgess Hill’s ambition and Daniel Joseph tried hard, too, taking two wickets but it wasn’t to be as the home side hit 82 for 7 (27.1 overs) and collected 30 points. Ajinkya

Deshpande took EIGHT wicket for the second week running for Stirlands 1st XI as they enjoyed a convincing win at Rye in Sussex Premier League 1st XI Division 4.

Rye elected to bat and came up against the player nicknamed Jinxy, who bowled over eight wickets for 63 runs with three maidens from 18.2 overs.

Dan Mugford and George Briance took the other wickets as the home side were restricted to 102 for 10 (36.2 overs). It didn’t take the visitors long to reach 104 for 3 (27.4 overs).

William Gubbins scored 46, Leo Wilkinson-Beal hit 32 and Torquil Deacon struck 13no to help Stirlands to victory. West Wittering 1st XI easily defeated Ram 2nd XI in West Sussex

Invitation League Division 3. West Wittering won the toss and elected to field at Millennium Meadow and Jack Harte returned figures of 3-8 to help restrict the visitors to 64 for 10 (29.2 overs). harry Straight and Richard Hammond also took two wickets each.

Mark Taylor 27, Jack Allsobrook 27no did the damage to get the home side to 70 for 1 (14.4 overs) to hand them a convincing nine-wicket victory.

Tom Amis took three wickets and hit 27 runs as Selsey 1st XI lost by six wickets at Broadbridge Heath in West Sussex Invitation League Division 2. Adrian Townshend hit 22 while Tim Fewster scored 16 as the visitors got to 110 for 9 (38.3 overs). Broadbridge Heath soon reached 113 for 4 (25.5 overs).

Bentall's skipper CHICHESTER RFC are gearing up for the new season and have announced their respective captains for the upcoming campaigns.

And the outfit’s head coach Rob Lawrence is right behind the appointment of Jack Bentall as the new 1st XV captain for the 2016/17 season at Oaklands Park..

He said: “I would like to offer huge congratulations to Jack on becoming new captain.

"I’m sure all involved in the ‘blue family’ would like to join me in welcoming Jack's new role and wishing him and the squad every success.”

Meanwhile, Will Baxendall has been handed the key role as the new 2nd XV skipper.

And the same honour goes to THomas Monnington, who gets the nod for the

job for the 3rd XV. And the new captains for the 4th XI have already been dubbed ‘the fantastic four’.

THe superheroes in question are Paul Hunt, Jess Clay, Steve Bradford, and Mark Booker.

As for the action during the season ahead, Chichester commence their third term in National League 3 with an away game against Westcombe Park on September 3.

And they travel overseas to come up against Guernsey a week later on September 10.

THey then host Shelford on September 17 and are on the road at Dorking a week after that.

Next up, Sutton & Epsom are the visitors on October 1, and a week later the Blues go to Hertford.

Sean 'n Ben big hit with ton-up display CAPTAIN Sean Heather smashed 117 and Ben Ferbrache hit a ton as Middleton 1st XI drew with St James's Montefiore in Premier League 1st XI Division 2.

THe home side reached 274 for 2 (52 overs) after winning the toss and electing to bat with Heather and Ferbrache not out after Will Burrrows had gone for 16 and Beck Hemingway for 25.

THe visitors scored 228 for 8 (48 overs) with the home side’s Craig Fowle and Jamie THompson taking two wickets each.

Keelan Shoulders got his “fifer” as Middleton 2nd XI drew at Steyning in Sussex Premier League 2nd XI Division 2. Shoulders’ five wickets came for 37 runs with three maidens from 13 runs as the home side were put into bat and scored 190 for 9 (53 overs). Shoulders proved useful with the bat, too, as he hit 51, with Matthew Warren scoring 73 as Middleton reached 188 for 8 (47 overs).

Max and Joe Ashmore were the standout players for Bognor 1st XI as they secured a 55-run win over Ansty in Sussex Premier League 1st XI Division 2.

Max Ashmore hit 51 as the home side elected to bat and scored 217 for 8 (53 overs), with Ryan Maskell offering a helping hand with 45.

Bognor face rivals Worthing on August 29 at Nyewood Lane, and fans will be keenly anticipating the Boxing Day home clash with Havant with former Rocks ace Rutherford and Prior set to return with their new club. Howell and his men travel to Worthing on January 2, and go to Havant on April 17.

Meanwhile, Bognor have established a relationship with Chichester College for the forthcoming season. Darin Killpartrick will be heading up a coaching team of David Daniel and Paul Hinshelwood aiming to work with players who have the ambition and talent to try to progress to the first team set-up.

A spokesman said: "Students of Chichester college will become our under 19s team and will be playing their home games at on Wednesday afternoons."

FORMER England international and top class professional Jimmy Harrison will lace up the gloves one more time on VK gym's white collar show, next week at the ripe old age of 50!.

Taking after one of my idols, boxer Bernard Hopkins, the ex-professional has almost defied logic in the brilliant way he has kept his fitness while ageing.

Harrison, who is a 5'6" pressure fighter, will have his final fight against the experienced Robbie Clay, who is a man HALF his age, at the July 30 show.

Born in Wandsworth, south London, Harrison had a decorated amateur career, accumulating in 80 fights, an England captaincy, and an ABA final before turning over and racking up 22 starts as a professional between 1985-89.

An honest and humble man, the level of respect I personally have for him stems from the sound advice he has given me over the years on my own career "I started boxing after seeing an exhibition bout down the local park and had to jump in and have a go," he recalls.

"I was 12 years old so joined my local boxing club and never looked back. THe head coach of the club, Ray Fallone, looked after me throughout my whole career and was like a second Dad to me."

After taking some decent scalps as a pro, Harrison's final fight was against the well known and big punching Pat Barrett, who would later go on to win, and keep, a British title.

After the contest with Barrett, his professional career was cut short due to a motorbike accident that left his knee badly injured.

On his retirement from boxing, he moved down to sunny Bognor Regis to start a family and new life, keeping himself fit by joining fellow senior athletes Keith Hardwell and Rodney Morley at the Tone Zone Runners group.

It was upon stepping into the gym to take his son Louis to train at Bognor ABC's old Westloats Lane club, where Harrison got "the smell" and consequent desire to fight once more.

But despite scoring in a 3-0 win, a source says: "Technically good on a sunny evening in Chichester. But on a cold night in Enfield?" Safe to say, "adios amigo", then.

Wild about Jimmy Howell could take a chance on teen ace

by Carl Eldridge sport@sussexpost.co.uk BOGNOR boss Jamie Howell hopes that striker Jimmy Wild can bolster Rocks’ attacking options with the big kick-off looming.

Wild, 18, showed glimpses of raw talent in a solid start in the 3-0 pre-season friendly win over Chichester City.

Howell believes Wild, left, signed from the Oaklands Park club, displayed enough promise for the manager to have faith that he can make the grade in the Ryman Premier League.

Howell said: “Jimmy did well for us.

He’s one for the future I think. He is only 18 but showed enough to suggest that he is worth keeping an eye on, considering

that we lost two attackers in the shape of Alfie Rutherford and Jason Prior to Havant.”

Wild was one of a crop of players who featured in the match and could be handed a role for the club next season.

Keeper Billy Granger, right, looks set to continue in goal when Bognor travel to Gosport for another friendly tomorrow (Saturday).

But Howell isn’t sure if the former Chelsea U21 custodian will replace Grant Smith, who quit to join Boreham Wood in the close season, for next season.

Howell added: “I think he has a few options. He did well for us against Chichester. I have an idea on the keeper situation so we will see.”
