Seafront's look unveiled
THIS could be a view of Bognor Regis seafront in four years. Work could start on the modern building in summer 2018. It is one of two initial designs which Arun District Council has commissioned for the Regis Centre site. It was shown to councillors on Wednesday as they approved continuing with the council's proposals for the key seafront location to regenerate the town. They agreed to spend ÂŁ260,000 on feasibility studies to see if the ideas are realistic. The illustration, and a more traditional design pictured on page four, has been created to show the possibilities of the
initiative by the council. It is considering acting as the developer of the land which it owns. Arun director of planning and economic regeneration Karl Roberts said in a report to councillors on Wednesday night the two images showed a possible view across the Place St Maur areas towards the seafront. "It is important to stress that these images illustrate what a scheme could look like, not what it will look like," he said. "Overall, the proposals as a package represent a very exciting opportunity for the town. The potential benefits for the town of undertaking these developments
are significant. However, it is important that any steps forward be based on sound financial and business sense." He received unanimous backing from councillors for the studies for the redevelopment of the seafront location. For the Regis Centre, the council wants to improve the Alexandra Theatre and provide a gallery space, multi-functional space and other related activities. The cost is likely to be ÂŁ10m or more. Knocking down the centre and the neighbouring pub would enable a new theatre to be built but the cost would probably double, Mr Roberts warned. The Regis pub would be demolished to create a landmark building with at least
one visitor attraction, flats and at least one restaurant. New pubs, small shops and catering units as well as space for a small family attraction are also envisaged. An 80-bed hotel is also wanted by pub operator Whitbread, which has 30 years left on its lease - and this could be built on the south-east corner of the centre's car park. Redeveloping the Hothamton car park off Queensway was also included in the studies. That could be completed in 2020. Turn to page four

Charlotte will take to the sky to highlight the devastating impact of Parkinson's. Her dad, Roy Manville, was diagnosed 14 years ago. "It's an absolutely shocking condition," she said. "THe more people who are aware of it, the better. In early 2015, he became very unwell and was admitted to hospital. THe doctors did all they could but felt there was no further treatment they could give. He was sent home with end of life care and expected to pass away. "He was on a pureed diet and on constant bed rest. But by some miracle my warrior of a dad is still here. "His quality of life is far different and he is still a very unwell man. "In the last few months, he has been able to sit in a recliner for a few hours but easily tires. He doesn't often speak and, when he does, he rarely makes much sense and some days he isn't even able to recognise me." Charlotte, 28, of Devonshire Road, is hoping to raise £1,000 with her skydive above Salisbury on September 18. She will divide the money between Parkinson's UK and the Donald Wilson Unit at St Richard's Hospital with its specialist neurological service. He has just been moved to a home in Petworth from one in Bognor so he can live in comfort with end stage Parkinson's at the age of 77. Mum of two Charlotte has recalled

` Residents will keep close watch for plans for Blake's Cottage CONCERNED residents have pledged to watch out for formal plans to alter Blake's Cottage in Felpham. Some 20 people attended a meeting last Saturday held by best-selling author Beryl Kingston. She called it at the Felpham Memorial Village Hall because of her worries about the impact on the Grade II-listed building of the proposals put forward by the Blake Society. THe society wants to pull down the 1970s extension to the historic cottage, and the garage, and use the space for a building which would become a study, library and meeting place. But Beryl said worries were expressed at the meeting about the effect the new building would have on the cottage where Blake lived between 1800-1803 and wrote the words which became Jerusalem. "Everyone agreed to keep an eye out for the orange planning application notice which will be put up at the cottage when the formal plans have been lodged with Arun District Council," she said. "We will hold the next meeting when that has happened and we know exactly what the plans comprise. "I was mildy encouraged by the meeting but it is now a case of waiting and seeing what is being proposed." She wants the society to hand the cottage to English Heritage or the National Trust to be restored and the cottage restored and opened to the public before any other work happens. THe Blake Sociey bought the 17th century cottage,in Blakes Road, last September for £500,000. THe society wants to restore the thatched cottage to make it as close to the building Blake would have known. But it also wants to create a world-class centre there to celebrate the famous poet and artist. It will be the first home for the study and appreciation of Blake in the world.

Councillors readily agreed on Wednesday to support the next stage in the council's potential redevelopment of the Regis Centre and Hothamton. THey were told the need for speed
was essential to ensure the chance of kickstarting the town's improvement was not lost. Arun District Council leader Cllr Gillian Brown (C, Aldwick East) told members: "THis council remains committed to the regeneration of Bognor Regis and we need to go ahead with the feasibility studies as soon as possible." Cllr Phil Hitchens (C, Aldwick West) said: "THis is almost ground-breaking and is a definite advantage to Bognor Regis which we should all embrace quite
wholeheartedly. As with anything we do in Bognor Regis, this is always a risk but we need to move forward on this and this is the way ahead." THe council is looking at both traditional and modern architecture for its Regis Centre proposals, as reported on page one. THe plans will see the Place St Maur improved as a public area for events and activities. Creating parking on three levels would see 450 spaces against the existing 220. Cllr Jim Brooks (I, Marine) said he
hoped any development by the council would result in fewer flats on the Regis Centre site than in previous proposals. But it was important, whatever the final uses, to have an eye-catching building. "What I do not want to see is an uninspiring building. Whatever elements we choose to have, we have been promised an iconic building," he said. Cllr Paul Wells (LD, Hotham) said: "We have been waiting a long time for so-called regeneration. We have to undertake this work to see what comes out of it. We have spent so much money on consultants' reports on regeneration. "Hopefully, we can deliver something at the end of this process." Cllr Francis Oppler (LD, Orchard) said: "I have a sense of disappointment that, after all this time, what we have is basically a revamped version of the Regis Centre. But the important thing is that something is done. "One thing consultation has shown time and time again is that people want to see a limited number of residential units on that site. It should be predominantly for tourism and leisure." On Hothamton, a report by the council's consultants says the site would be suitable for its preferred option of student flats with a convenience store, cafe/bar and small gym. THe firm, Urban Delivery, says it is unlikely a major store operator would be interested. Only Aldi might want to move in but the company had yet to be asked.
` Waste site to close two days ALL-WEEK opening at the Bognor Regis waste site is to end. THe Shripney Road facility will be closed on THursdays and Fridays from October 1. THe decision was announced on Wednesday by county councillor David Barling. Its opening hours will be 10am7pm in summer and 10am-5pm in winter after Cllr Barling agreed to extend those originally proposed after a record 4,899 residents responded to his plans. He said: “I have made this decision carefully and considered all of the possible options before me. "I have listened to the views of the public, with more people than ever before making their voices heard in a council consultation, and there was substantial understanding of the financial circumstances driving this. “As a council we have to make savings, due to a shortfall in Government funding, and this decision is the best option we have to make the £2m a year savings needed. We are not closing any sites and are keeping them open at weekends, which our public consultation shows West Sussex residents wanted. “Our household waste recycling sites will continue to be extremely well run and will still provide an effective, but more efficient, service." Charges for non-household waste, like soil, will be brought in at £4 a bag as well as £4 for each car and van tyre.

"Despite Brexit, we saw our funders last week and Brexit does not affect them," Mr Rumke told Bersted Parish Council last week. "THey specialise in the regeneration of British holiday resorts and they are still on board. "Despite the troubled markets, in terms of local regeneration and this scheme in particular, their position has not changed." THe main elements of the scheme are a 60,000sq ft boardwalk development of retail, commercial and cafes on the Regis Centre site as well as a 59-bedroom hotel. Leisure facilities such as a spa and gym will also be included with the flats above. THe theatre is destined for the Hothamton site with a 48-bed hotel as well. A top-class restaurant will be built on the site of the seafront skatepark which will be moved. THe theatre has received interest from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra as well as Tate Gallery bosses and the University of Chichester. It will attract world-famous acts and productions as well as being able to cater for smaller shows with a capacity capable of being reduced to 250. THe Arun Arts charity, which runs the Regis Centre, will be given a temporary home while the new theatre is built to bring in visitors from miles around. "We want to kickstart Bognor's economy again as a seaside resort which it used to be successfully - but quite some time ago," Mr Rumke said. "THe theatre will be the only one of its kind between the Brighton Centre and the Mayflower in Southampton."

THe homeowners of Devonshire Road said the use of a former family house for up to ten tenants had made their lives a nightmare. THey saw their objections to a house being used for multiple occupancy narrowly supported by councillors. Arun District Council's development control committee agreed 6-4 the use of the property for letting and its lack of parking was out of keeping in the area and harmful to its character. THis followed their 5-4 vote, with two abstentions, to reject their planning officer's advice to approve the HMO. Residents' spokesman Steven Kettlewell said too many occupants were in the detached property. Neighbours had been left horrified by a catalogue of incidents in the past two years, as reported in the Post last month. THese included a young child witnessing a bottling, sexual harassment and intimidation, excessively loud music and drinking in the front and back gardens. "Devonshire Road residents are doing everything in their power to express their strong opposition to this application," he said. "THe house was designed with a single family in mind and that should be borne in mind." Town councillor Sanda Daniells backed the campaigners to reinforce the town council's objection to the retrospective application. "Residents have witnessed numerous incidents of undesirable and inappropriate behaviour. THis has clearly been deeply concerning and caused distress and disruption to their day to day living," she said. "THis is a wholly inappropriate and unsuitable location to approve a house of multiple occupation." To approve the plans would set a precedent for other properties to be converted away from single occupancy, she said. She pointed out an Arun
approval in 2010 of two extra bedrooms at the property was conditional on it being used for a single family. Committee members spoke of their unhappiness with the application by Julie Gosbee. Cllr Ricky Bower (C, East Preston) said: "I have sympathy with the local residents. THis is one of those occasions where, as a planning authority, we are somewhat over a barrel and are presented with a planning application which works the system." Cllr Elaine Stainton (C, Felpham West) said: "Southdown Road and Devonshire Road are lovely roads with lovely houses. It's very sad to see the way it's going." But Daniel Fordham, the letting agent for the property, said he not received any complaints about anti-social behaviour of the tenants. "If things were so bad, I feel people should have told someone - the council or me. "THe immediate neighbours have my contact details and I will do my utmost to resolve any issues they might have. "I have been working closely with the department of environmental health to get the property to comply with current legislation." As well as the town council, Arun received 28 letters of objection to the use of the house as an HMO. Arun planning officer Daniel Vick said: "THe HMO being created has not changed the property externally so it is not considered the retention of the HMO will adversely affects the area. "Furthermore, it will still be in residential use and will be the only HMO in the road in line with (our) policy. "THe change of use of the property as an HMO may lead to an increase in noise/use of the property. However, this is not considered to be such an increase that it would lead to significant harm to neighbouring residential amenity." He said the council's environmental health officers had the power to license the property as an HMO if they were satisified with the living conditions.

DIANE Dalton will end this month on a high for charity. THe Eastergate resident is taking to the sky on July 31 for a sponsored wing walk in aid of St Wilfrid's Hospice. Her brave actions will be in memory of her husband, Nicholas, who died at the hospice in 2013. Diane said: “I’m really looking forward to it now it’s getting closer, I’m just worried it’ll be cold and windy up there! "THe care, love and compassion of this amazing place, can never be described unless you experience it. "THey made my husband's death almost bearable and my family and I will continue to raise money for their work. "My friends and family have been so supportive and I am on my way to reaching my fundraising goal.” Physiotherapist Diane, 75, of Barnham Road, originally wanted to join the
hospice's Leap of Love and parachute out of a plane but a poorly back ruled her out of it. THe wing walk was the next best alternative. She is likely to be flown about 400ft up with the wind in her hair at 130mph on top of a Boeing Stearman biplane for the exhilarating experience of a lifetime. Her flight will take place above Compton Abbas near Salisbury and she expects it to last about 20 minutes. "I feel very strongly about people sponsoring me for something that has an element of risk to it rather than just going for a walk around Chichester," she said. THe mother-of-two, who also has four grandchildren, hopes to raise £1,500 for the hospice. "I really can't say how wonderful they were when Nicholas died of prostate cancer at the age of 70," she said She has previously trekked 100km over the Great Wall of China for charity in 1999 and raised £2,500. Damage could see zipwire in park taken away by council HIGH-FLYING children in a Bognor Regis park could be grounded by selfish dog owners. THe owners are encouraging their pets to strengthen their jaws by biting on the seat of the zipwire some 40m long in the park's children's playarea. THree of the seats have been wrecked in a few months. Arun District Council has put up a notice threatening to remove the zipwire if the damage continues. A spokesperson for Arun District Council said: “We believe a dog was being encouraged to bite the zip wire seat and after, having to replace it more than once, the council put up a sign to remind dog owners that dogs are not allowed in the playground, as per the Dog Control Order which states that dogs are prohibited from children’s playgrounds and that any dog owner breaching this faces a fine. "A member of staff also put some photographs on the council’s social media pages to appeal for information. “Since this action was taken, the situation has improved although the seat has suffered some minor damage."

Sammy Community Transport is facing the prospect of being homeless in just over a year. THe lease on its premises in Chichester Road expires in 17 months and the members of its governing council have begun the hunt for an alternative building. Chairman Roger Turner said: "THis matter gets more vital with every passing day. Even if it was possible to renew the lease, it would only be for a short term and would not give us security. "If anyone knows of any premises that are suitable, or are becoming available in the future, please let us know. We would prefer, if possible, to negotiate a purchase of our next premises." His plea at the charity's latest annual meeting last Friday was echoed by the manager, Mike Collins. He said any premises would have to be able to house its four members of staff as well as nine minibuses and two accessible cars. "Where we call home is very important to us. Without
it, we will be worse off. We have got less than two years to tell people that we should be part of their community." His report showed Sammy's vehicles, as well as those of its 30 volunteer and eight paid drivers, had some 6,900 passengers in the Bognor Regis and Chichester areas. Some 50 newcomers join every month. THey undertook 89,255 journeys in the past year to hospital and doctor appointments as well as social outings. Many of its members are old and vulnerable and have serious medical conditions. THe ageing population means Sammy's importance is growing to provide a vital transport link for those unable to get out on their own through age or ill health. "We do what other people can't do and help the people others can't help," he said. But he said the charity was being targeted by insensitive treatment at the hands of Chichester District Council's parking services department. As reported, its wardens have issued four parking tickets to Sammy's 17-seater minibuses when their drivers have been delivering passengers with dementia to their lunch club. THe Traffic Penalty Tribunal has recommended the notices should be cancelled because of 'the very compelling reasons to do so'. THis has been ignored

"THis will eventually lead to Sammy being effectively barred from parts of Chichester and by extension our vulnerable beneficiaries being discriminated against," he said. "Chichester refuse to understand the people we take out and about are not Joe Public who use us as public transport because it's cheaper but because they have no option. "THe people on the minibuses are suffering with dementia and Alzheimer's and the minibuses are causing no danger or impediment to anybody for the length of time they are there. But, even if they were there all day long, they wouldn't be causing any hardship." THe biggest concern with dementia sufferers was the risk they could wander off if the minibus had to park further away from the venue. THe problem had been solved recently by being able to use a store's car park but Mr Collins said he feared that arrangement was set to end and the ticketing could start again. He also criticised the ambulance service's 'poor decision' to award patient transport to a commercial company. "THe people they are letting down should not be in that position," he added. "THey are missing cancer treatments and urgent hospital appointments."

` Arun considers sharing services SAVINGS of more than £2m a year are being considered by Arun district councillors. THey have agreed to develop full business cases and plans to share up to six of their services with councils in Chichester and Horsham. Arun's cabinet members also decided to consider outsourcing any of the services to compare the benefits of bringing in commercial firms with joining with other councils. Up to £50,000 will be spent by Arun preparing the detailed plans before a final decision is made. THe need to make savings has been prompted by the fact the multi-million pound annual grant the council receives from Whitehall will disappear in three years and the council will have to pay the government instead. Cllr Terence Chapman told the cabinet: "We must not lose sight of the option to outsource because shared services take a long time to bed in and there are different cultures in different places and we can't simply impose our will." THe services being considered for sharing are human resources and payroll, ICT, customer services, revenues and benefits, legal and audit. Cllr Dudley Wensley, the council's deputy leader, said: "If there is not sufficient benefit to Arun to do these things, then we really should not be bothering to pursue it."

Making theatre group needs new home to continue work A NEW home is being sought by a Bognor Regis-based group which improves lives through the theatre. Making THeatre Gaining Skills wants to carry on reducing unemployment by teaching new talents to those without a job. But its premises of the past year at the town's railway station are no longer available because of an impending major refurbishment at the building. Director Hilary Strong said: "Having this base has enabled us to provide better on-going support to our participants and to start developing strong relationships with local referral partners and employers. "However, the insecurity of temporary accommodation means that we are unable to make long-term plans for the
growth of Making THeatre Gaining Skills. "We are now looking for a permanent location so that we can become properly stable and focus entirely on delivery of our theatre-based projects." Hilary began Making THeatre Gaining Skills five years ago. Its courses use technical theatre craft to enable jobless adults, young people and children to move forward with their lives and gain the ability to look out for future chances. Its core activity is a three-week work experience based around the production of a short play for children. Up to 12 people become technicians, set builders, administrators and stage crew to work to tight deadlines to ensure they are ready for the first performance. "Since 2011, 182 participants have
attended Making THeatre Gaining Skills courses, with a 91 per cent completion rate," said Hilary. One in two of the last cohort of students has moved on to new opportunities, including paid jobs. Many were facing severe barriers to employment. THree key areas of focus are used by the project. THese are people who are struggling with mental health problems, people with learning difficulties or disabilities and those who lack qualifications. Shorter one-week courses are also run as well as bespoke commissioned projects and community events. Innovative ways to teach maths and English have enabled Making THeatre Gaining Skills to receive centre approval
with NCFE to deliver qualifications. Hilary said: "Our method is incredibly effective at engaging disengaged learners, enabling them to learn through doing and gain vital qualifications." No prior theatre experience is needed. THe focus is on transferable skills such as task management, problem solving, effective communication and resourcefulness. A permanent home would enable the project to improve its service to participants to enable them to drop in and get advice and support when they most need it, Hilary said. CRAFTS were on show in the heart of Bognor Regis. THe town's third artisan market attracted a record turnout of 29 stalls. THe hundreds of goods on show included skillfully crafted wooden birds, intricately patterned needlework and lip-smacking cakes. Last Saturday's event in the Old Town area of little High Street and Norfolk Street attracted hundreds of visitors. Stalls were also located in the forecourt of Bognor Regis Methodist Church and inside its hall. Many of the stall holders were newcomers keen to add their support to the increasingly popular occasion on a beautiful summer day. Shopworker Sophie Mack, 25, was there with her Pixel Stitch business before she starts a fashion and design course at college in September. She takes her inspiration for her needlework and cross stitched products from computer games, comics and pop art. "THis is the fourth market I've had a stall at," said North Bersted resident Sophie. "I was recommended by a friend to do it. She thought it would be a good way of getting my business better known. "I've been to craft markets elsewhere and I hope this one will be a good one to attend. "Bognor Regis needs a commercial boost and these markets are a way of bringing something different to the town. "THis is the summer and there are a lot of people about looking for different things. THere is nothing in Bognor that has homemade crafts and I hope to come back to the next artisan market if I do well today." Jan, 62, had on show doorstops in the shape of chickens and Russian dolls as well as cushions and tea cosies. Her friend, Chris Richards, was at the market for the first time with Bags, Bits and Bobs by Chris. Medical secretary Chris, 58, said she discovered the hobby of craftwork in March last year. "I hated sewing all my married life. But now I love it and can't stop. "It takes me out of the everyday hustle and bustle and stresses. I just get lost in my sewing for two hours after work," she said. THe market was organised by Chris Warden and Michele Redford after being initiated by town centre manager Toyubur Rahman. "THis latest market is really good with the highest turnout of stalls we've had.
"THe aim of the market is to try and encourage more people to visit this part of the town centre by offering them something slightly different from the other markets, like the regular one on the Place St Maur. "We are trying to get people who would not necessarily come into the town to spend some time here. Hopefully, that will also see them come back to the town again and spend more money." Live music was performed in the afternoon by soloist Terry Carvey. Bognor Regis' illuminations mascot Billy the Bulb was also present. THe next artisan market will take place from 10am-4pm on September 10. It will be the final one this year.

Girl Guides take part in their Olympics in town

MP's meeting with residents COFFEE and a chat have been enjoyed by a group of Felpham residents with their MP. Donna and Peter Ratcliff invited Bognor Regis and Littlehampton MP Nick Gibb to their home at Blakes Mead. Some of their neighbours in Wood Hill Way joined in the occasion. Mr Gibb said: "Meeting new people, particularly those who are new to the area, helps me to understand the issues people are concerned
about. "Our discussion ranged from the problems encountered with new-build homes to the consequences of the outcome of the EU referendum." Also present were Alison Edwards, Francesca Sharpe, Jeannie THomas and Lynne Lamb. Earlier this month, Mr Gibb went to the Aldwick Green Conservation Society's summer fair and paid tribute to the work of its volunteers on the site.
HUNDREDS of Girl Guides staged their version of the Olympics in Bognor Regis. A total of 600 members of the movement from around the county took part in the sporting occasion. THey enjoyed four activities each which included archery, swimming, BMX biking, soft ball, laser clay shooting and fencing. THe other featured sports were martial arts, rugby, handbill, gymnastics and athletics. Samba drumming and dance were also on offer in the Guiding Games. One of the organisers, Jane Brosnan, said: "It was a fantastic day and a brilliant way to encourage our girls to discover new sports in a relaxed and fun way, so that they can further develop their skills and abilities and maybe one day become an Olympian themselves. "As we say in Girlguiding - We Discover, We Grow." THe girls encompassed all ages in Girlguilding from Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and THe Senior Section. THose from Bognor Regis were joined by those who had travelled from Adur, Arun, Chichester, Petworth and Worthing for the special occasion last Saturday. It was organised to enable them to experience a wide variety of sports, loosely based on the forthcoming Olympics in Rio, that they might not have previously been

THe day started with a colourful and rather noisy opening ceremony held in a carnival style with dancing and samba drumming. Each district had a representative dressed in either the national costume or Guide uniform of a country they had chosen for the day. THey staged a parade around the sports hall before the lighting of the Guiding Games' flame. THe day concluded with everyone gathering again to watch a display of
dancing learnt during one of the activity sessions, to party with the samba band and, finally, to extinguish the Guiding Games' flame with Bognor Regis and Littlehampton MP Nick Gibb. He said he had never seen so many girls in one room at one time. Like schools, the Guiding term is nearly at an end but the fun and adventure will begin again in September. Spotlight on art at college ART was showcased by Felpham students at a celebration of creativity. Dancing, painting, video-making, dress-making and furniture-making were on display at Felpham Community College's annual summer arts evening. Headteacher Mark Anstiss said: "Creativity is so important in young people and so important for British industry. It's being squeezed out by the government but we value it and we will keep teaching it unlike other schools." GCSE and A-level exam pieces were among the work on show by the 200-300 pupils last THursday. Art student Elsie Franklin had her striking black and white acrylic on board portrait of her father, Adam Franklin, on show. It was taken from her photograph in the chiaroscuro style. Elsie, 18, said: "It's a great feeling to see my painting on show. When you do a painting in class, it does not feel like a proper painting. It does when you see it on show here." A unique performer on the stage was flamenco dancer Jessica Cayles, 13, who said: "Flamenco dancing is really different. "It can be scary sometimes because no-

one knows what I am doing. But it's fun when I play the castanets really fast and I can show people how good they are." Elliot Kempson, 14, played a guitar duet with Jude Turnley, also 14, of Miserlou from the film Pulp Fiction as well as Black Eyed Peas fame. "I love playing the guitar, showing people what I can do and impressing them. I play my guitar at home but I would rather play it in front of an audience and I feel proud I have done it," he said. For Jas Blakey, 15, pictured above, the ukuele was her instrument of choice for Back to Black. She said: "I have always loved music since I was a little baby. I sing all the time. It's exhilarating to sing and it's nice to perform in front of other people. "THe biggest audience I have sung in front of is a thousand at the annual Big Sing event since I was at primary school." Nikki Mooney, 17, directed her friend Libby Clegg, also 17, in a three minute video, Torn Together. She stated: "I got inspiration from my peers who have been through break ups and hard times in their lives. So, I wanted to illustrate the importance of having social support from friends."

A NIGHT of Proms music filled Hotham Park in Bognor Regis. More than 1,500 people took advantage of a beautiful summer evening to enjoy the performance of rousing music in the stunning setting. THey settled around the park's bandstand, opened the wine and canapes and endulged in a memorable occasion. Kristen Fitzpatrick, the events officer of Bognor Regis Town Council, said last Saturday's event had been a stunning success. "THe sun shone, the flags were waved and the park was filled with wonderful music for the Proms in the Park 2016. "THe classical cabaret ensemble of All THat Malarkey, pictured above left, opened the Proms in the Park for 2016 in the wonderfully flamboyant and vocally perfect way they could only do, followed by the beautiful sounds of the Chichester City Band accompanied by local soprano Sylvia Rota," she said. "A belated Happy Birthday was sung to Her Majesty the Queen, Sussex by the Sea filled the park and the entire park was upstanding as the National Anthem was played." THe proms night has become a popular event thanks to the town council.

Maths students are number one MATHS experts at Felpham Community College have shown their skills with numbers. More than 200 of the college's students took part in the latest annual UK Maths Challenge. Certificates for effort and achievement were awarded to 70-plus pupils at a celebration event. Rox Returns to Bognor this July! Rox Music and Arts Office The University of Chichester, Bognor Regis Campus, Upper Bognor Road, West Sussex PO21 1HR roxmusicandarts.org Rox returns to Bognor on July 30th & 31st, albeit on a smaller scale. Since the cancellation of the main FREE festival earlier this year, the Rox crew have been working in the background to bring an eclectic line up of music to be hosted in various venues throughout the town. The traditional Folk/acoustic Secret Garden Stage has been moved to Hotham park with around 30 acts appearing over the weekend including ‘Fidget’ (pictured) who appear on the Sunday at 3.00pm. There will also be a variety of stalls and kid’s entertainment, a real ale bar and food outlets to ‘enhance’ the ambience of the chilled out Secret Garden

One of the largest planetariums in the country, the South Downs Planetarium is the place to go to learn more about the universe. The registered educational charity is run by a team of dedicated volunteers and astronomy enthusiasts, keen to share their knowledge of space with you. Operating throughout the year, the planetarium is not open every day but is available for private bookings on any day of the week. It could be a special show for private groups, clubs and societies during the day, at night or at the weekend. Around eight or nine presentations take place every month which are open to the general public. Are you a teacher, keen for your class to learn more about our galaxy? The planetarium takes advance bookings for school visits and youth groups to enable youngsters to open their eyes to space.

A full line up of live bands will feature throughout Saturday and Eddie Stenner will be taking over on Sunday with his experienced DJ’s, many of whom have featured in the Rox weekend in previous years. The William Hardwicke will be running the successful Ibiza Rox on Saturday which was trialled at the Festival last year. In the evening, Mud Club reforms for a special session which will also be giving a nod to Prince with special dance tracks. It’s all change on Sunday as live bands take over for the day. The Claremont in West Street are also planning to host a mixture of DJ’s a live entertainment, we are in dialogue with other venues at the time of going to press. Arundel Castle in West Sussex is set to play host to the world’s longest international jousting competition, with top challengers from across the globe taking part in its spectacular Jousting and Medieval Tournament Week (26-31 July). In a new twist, this year’s Joust will feature a female competitor for the first time ever, with Marie Baron representing the Kingdom of France alongside her partner Luc Petillot. 2016 will also see the Kingdom of Norway make their debut at Arundel Castle’s Jousting and Medieval Tournament Week. Overseeing proceedings in the shadow of the mighty Castle will be Kyle Van Dolah-Evans. Kyle will be the first Lady Marshall in Arundel’s history - she will be the head judge and supreme voice of authority on the field, proving that girl power is alive and well at Arundel Castle. Now in its 9th year, the Jousting and Medieval Tournament Week is undoubtedly the highlight of Arundel Castle’s open season, with six intense, action packed days – and plenty of fierce rivalries along the way. No rivalry runs as deep as that of reigning champions, the Kingdom of England, and the Kingdom of France. Year-on-year the French team has come up against the six time champions, the Kingdom of England, and have been consistently denied a victory – something the French competitors are hoping to rectify this year. The Kingdom of Poland is returning in 2016, and will be keen to go one better than their 2015 performance

Flair, care and style on show at No. 1 Northgate Think high end, impressive food at even more impressive prices I CANNOT speak highly enough about the meal me and my partner were lucky enough to enjoy at this stylish restaurant this week. I think I must be the only Chichester resident to have never stepped in the door to the eatery before now – and trust me, when I say it will not be the last time I go here. No.1 Northgate is simply a class above other establishments – it exudes class, sophistication and really top notch food but it manages to pull it off in a beautifully decorated setting, whilst putting the customer at complete ease straight from the word go. THere is none of the pretention that comes with food and service of such a high quality in some restaurants, just friendly and attentive service with stunning dishes that the head chef really takes care over. We were welcomed by our waiter Stephen, who let us pick our own table and throughout the entire dinner struck the perfect balance between being attentive whilst giving us our space.
THe service was quick and efficient but never rushed – and Stephen’s knowledge of the menu really showed through. We were given the A la Carte menu as well as the specials to pick from and the food selection was so great, it was hard to make a decision on what sounded the nicest. I opted to stick with the specials, ordering the tempura battered king prawns with chilli mayonnaise to start while my partner ordered from the other menu, choosing the pan fried king scallops with grilled chorizo, celeriac puree and poached Quails eggs. It was superb. I barely heard a peep from my other half as he dived in, and afterwards he said it was the best starter he had tasted in years. My prawns were juicy and succulent and cooked to perfection with just the right amount of batter – perfectly matched with the slightly spicy chilli mayonnaise. For mains I chose the rosemary and garlic roasted rump of lamb with Dauphinoise

potatoes, steamed cabbage and a red wine jus. My other half went for his favourite – rib eye steak served with salad, the chunkiest chips you have ever seen and a thick and creamy pepper sauce. Again there were no complaints – perfectly cooked food with great portion sizes, that left us both arguing the case of whose dinner was better. Head chef John Banham came out to find out how our food was going down, and whether there was anything else we needed. THis was a lovely touch that really set off the meal and showed the level of love that goes into making what really were sublime dishes. John explained the restaurant had had something of an overhaul recently, and told us how lovely it was to work as part of a small team who got on well. THe fact that everyone working there gets along and works together was evident from the start and really makes for a lovely atmosphere. THey are trying to do things differently at No.1 Northgate.THe emphasis is on excellent food at reasonable prices, which I think it already delivers. But the emphasis now is on making sure families feel welcome, whilst bringing in fresh and seasonal produce to offer something different each night. from fish and chip nights, to tapas night and a roast dinner on a Sunday - something I will definitely be going back to try at £12.50 a roast - a bargain. No.1 Northgate does have a very sophisticated setting but it is done in such a way that it is a restaurant suitable for all -
and it certainly should not be something that puts you off coming here for fear of it being snobby because it is as far from that as you can imagine. For dessert at £6 I went for the banoffee pie which I had high hopes for as it is one of my favourites. It came almost deconstructed on a bed of warm biscuits with candied nuts sprinkled throughout which really added something special to the dish. THe toffee sauce which was the perfect consistency was pooled aorund the plate to dip the chopped bananas and cream into. It was one of the best banoffees I have ever tasted.My partner - who normally is not a dessert eater, but was scared of being left out after the impressive two courses beforehand - chose the lemon steamed sponge, served with candied fruit and a lemon sauce. Because of how full I was I struggled to finish my banoffee, and ended up feeling rather disappointed with myself but my partner had no problem clearing his plate completely, with not a single crumb left behind. THe building is a coverted bank and for the ladies you walk through an old vault to get to the toilets, which is very cool. No.1 Northgate offers a wide ranging menu and is a restaurant I cannot wait to visit again. It is somewhere you go to for dinner and come out having experienced a real treat. BARGAIN time seems to be continuing at Marks & Spencer with 25 per cent off six bottles of wine or more at the time of writing! I decided this week that I should venture to sunnier climes and sample some Southern French wine. And in the white wine section I opted for a Domaine Mandeville Viognier Pays d'OC 2015 from the Languedoc region now priced down to a mere £6. This ripe, zesty Viognier with traditional flavours of apricots, honey and white peach and a hint of spice was instantly quaffable and would accompany grilled mackerel or tuna to perfection. The exotic note of ginger in the finish is noteworthy and distinctive. As I ventured right to the red section I espied a Domaine de la Curniere Vacqueras 2014 which, given its Rhone appellation, has ripe plum with a hint of spice with supple tannins. And rich peppery aromas promotes the Grenache grape to another level — worth a punt at this price, which including reduction, is £9.75. Bacchus rules!

INGREDIENTS • 1 whole chicken (about 1kg/2lb 3oz), spatchcocked • salt and freshly ground black pepper
FOR THE PIRIPIRI SAUCE • 6-12 fresh red chillies, depending on how hot you want it • 1 tbsp garlic, blanched and chopped • 1 tsp salt flakes • ½ tsp oregano • ½ tbsp paprika • 100ml/3½fl oz olive oil • 50ml/1¾fl oz red wine vinegar
TO SERVE • chips • salad
METHOD 1. To make the piri-piri sauce, preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Place the chillies on a roasting tray and roast them for 10 minutes. 2. Cool and roughly chop the chillies. Place the chillies, garlic, salt, oregano, paprika, olive oil and vinegar in a saucepan, and simmer for 2-3 minutes. 3. Allow the mixture to cool, then blend it to a purée in a jug blender or food processor. Store in a lidded container at room temperature; it will keep for about a month. Shake before using.
6. Season the marinated chicken, and cook it on the griddle pan for 2-3 minutes on each side, until golden brown. 7. Transfer the griddled chicken to a roasting tray and roast in the oven for 30 minutes, until cooked through. Alternatively, place the chicken on a medium heat barbecue, covered, for 1015 minutes on both sides or until cooked through, basting regularly with the remaining piri-piri sauce. 8. Serve with chips and salad.
4. Place the spatchcocked chicken in a sealable plastic bag. Add half the piri-piri sauce, spreading it evenly over the chicken. Seal and marinate in the refrigerator for at least one hour. 5. Preheat the oven to 200C/390F/Gas 6, and preheat a large griddle pan on the hob. Alternatively, light your barbecue.

THese columns will draw on, and briefly question, relevant issues in the Post circulation area and shows existing community provision that can help. It is not a direct promotion of the centre's services but raises issues and increases access to what is available.
UNIQUE clothing is being provided by a Bognor Regis shop. Makers Boutique officially opened last Saturday after a prelaunch visit from West Sussex County Council leader, Cllr Louise Goldsmith, pictured above right. Makers Boutique is the retail outlet for the upcycled clothes made by volunteers and apprentices for My Sisters' House Community Interest Company Women's Centre. It is located at 78 London Road. Cllr Goldsmith called the work of the centre inspirational. Annabell Alexander, who chairs the company, said: "Donated clothes and textiles are used to design and produce unique garments. "THe project began designing ladies clothes, but more recently the range has included bespoke children's clothes. "THe team also produce cushions, dolls and many other interesting and unique items. "One of their best sellers is bunting made to order for celebrations and some for new baby's bedrooms." Pictured below are apprentice Jade Sherwill, cutting the ribbon at the official opening, with Helen Downes and Marion Wells, who are part of the volunteer sewing team. THe shop is open from 10am until 4pm Monday to Saturday. Items can also be purchased through its Etsy page or from the My Sisters Makers page on Facebook. THe sales from Makers Boutique supports the work of My Sisters' House CIC Women's Centre with its aim of inspiring women to live their potential. THe women's centre supports women with any problems from domestic violence, financial problems, to going back to work. THe service can be found at 108c London Road, Bognor Regis. TIME banking is a way of giving and receiving to build supportive networks and strong communities, building on the magic of “pay it forward,” one good turn leading to another and another. THe principle of the timebank is that everyone has skills, knowledge and abilities to offer that could benefit someone. Everyone’s time is valued equally, so one hour of time given = one time credit. THe benefits of the timebank are endless as every member who signs up has something to contribute. It is also a great way to help someone in need or to combat loneliness. THis initiative, funded by West Sussex County Council, is being run through Aldingbourne Trust’s My Network Hub, which offers sign posting support to adults with learning disabilities who are not eligible to receive paid services. THe Bognor Regis Timebank was launched in January, sharing over 125 hours of time to date. Members have been

Starting with a man carrying balloons, he will progress through kites and dirogibles right up to the modern era at the airport. I am aware some Arun residents have voiced concerns about recent media articles reporting a rise in hate crimes in the wake of the EU referendum result. I want to reassure residents that this has not been the picture in Arun, where I have it on authority from Sussex Police there has been no rise in reported incidents of this kind. I wish to make it absolutely clear that, as a council, we will not tolerate discrimination of any kind. Everybody has the right to feel safe in their community and any kind of hate crime is wholly unacceptable, whatever the circumstances. Arun District Council -working together with its public sector partners including Sussex Police - has worked hard for many years to ensure that migration into the district, be it national or international, is carefully managed to maintain community cohesion. In the context of a national picture, Arun remains a very safe place to live, work or visit. THis is something we are proud of and work hard to preserve. Arun has seen the successful integration of a wide range of migrating communities over many years and this has been achieved through education and positive engagement. Any racially motivated hate crime in the district should always be reported to Sussex Police so the force, Arun District Council and other public sector partners can continue to monitor any community tensions. THe current assessment remains low. If you feel you witnessed, or been affected by, this type of behaviour, please report this to the police by phoning 101 or emailing 101@sussex.pnn.police. uk. A GOOD of exhibits made Bognor Regis Horticultural Society's summer show a success. THe blooms were judged by Peter Collett. As always, he managed to combine tips on growing and showing across the whole range of flowers, pot plants through to fruit and vegetables. He congratulated members for coping with this season's difficult weather conditions. Cups were awarded for best sweet peas by Melissa Hauffe. Best rose award was won by Irene Wood and was a Duchess of Cornwall bloom. THe best in show trophy was won by Bet Chapman, pictured above, for her display of six matching fuschia blooms. THeir variety is unknown because the plant was a gift. Coming up will see its members take up an invitation to visit Lambeth Palace and gardens in August and September will be their autumn show. New members are always very welcome. Meetings are held at the Jubilee Hall, off Chalcraft Lane, on the fourth THursday of each month.

A small road with a long and interesting history

But it was decided in 1968 that the building should be demolished to make way for road widening, which sadly never occurred. Proceeding along this side of the road were 18 houses and a block of flatlets being used by Butlin’s for their staff – me included - in 1968. Some of these houses were Edwardian and others built in the 1920s and were substantial private houses. Butlin’s took many years before they decided in 1970 to demolish them. Esplanade was occupied by Winchelsea House, “one of the smartest period buildings on the seafront". It was originally a holiday home, known as Mackonochie House, and associated with St. Alban’s Church in Holborn, London, and run by Miss Louise Stewart for clergy and workers connected with the church. In 1958, with the start of the work at Butlin’s, it was bought as staff accommodation. Finally, in 1970, this fine building was also demolished. Crossing the road to the west side of Gloucester Road we see a different pattern. THe major building work from the Esplanade corner to Walton Road began around the early 1900s, and was known as the Strathmore Estate. In 1908 the corner property known as Field House opened by Mrs Emily Ward as flats for young children and their nurses, while on holiday. THe complex closed in 1939 and was demolished. entrance to two houses named Lane End and Walton House. Landowner James Fleming, the father of Lindsey Fleming who wrote the ‘History of Pagham’, intended to build blocks of flats. But he could not complete his plans. Next, from the early 1860s was the private residence of Belvedere House which was taken over by St. Dominic’s, a Catholic prep school, in 1890. St Dominic’s operated until 1936 when stories of road widening and their need for larger premises saw them move to St Leonards. THe school and land was sold to the Postmaster General in 1937 and the building was demolished. Eventually in the mid-1960s, new government buildings were created - a twostorey building with a long-awaited automatic telephone exchange, costing about £170,000. THe second building was five-storeys high with labour, pensions and National Insurance offices.

Gloucester Road's appearance belies its varied past THIS week I thought we could take a look at a short stretch of road that today hardly merits a glance – Gloucester Road. On an 1859 map it is shown with meadows on either side. On the east of the road people will remember the small tuck shop that existed for many years. THese premises were a farmhouse from the 1700s, named Grove Lodge and then renamed Brook Gate. It was used for generations by the Munday family for dairy farming. A RECORD 38 Tone Zoners entered the Lavant Mid-Summer 5 mile race organised by Chichester runners. THe course leads runners out of Lavant village for a lap of Goodwood Motor Circuit and back. Harry Annals was first for the club and 10th overall in 29.44. Jess THomson finished third in her category in 36.10. Anna-Kari Enes did the run in 36.48 with Susi Briggs third with 41.08. Another 5 mile race took place at Queen Elizabeth country park, Hants. First to finish the cross-country course for the club was Tony Holcombe in 43.31. Sarah Stothard and Rebecca Jones sprinted to the finish with Stothard winning by a second. THe race also saw Amanda Worne continue her marathon preparation with her bike-chair, finishing in 1.07.59. Simon Bodsworth and Jade Fish ran in the Southdowns Midnight Marathon along South Downs Way to Cocking and back. Simon completed it in 5.17. Jade took 6 hours.

With the growing trend of white collar shows over the past 10 years came the opportunity for Harrison to fulfil that desire. And so in April 2012, after whipping himself into shape at VK gym, Harrison boxed in the popular Queensbury Fight League, a rising semi-pro outfit, beating Manchester's Paul Hayes, a man 20 years his junior, making a remarkable comeback from a 23-year hiatus from competitive boxing. So with only one loss from eight fights in the last four years, the twofisted fireball will be confident of beating Clay, also a friend of mine, from Portsmouth. "I just really want to go out with a bang," said Harrison. "I started training once more to lose some weight at first but got the urge to fight again. "As you get older though, you do start to feel the punches a bit more so I think this will definitely be my last hurrah." I have sparred many rounds with the old warhorse and can verify he is as game, tough and fit as any young pro I've been in with. I'd advise anyone to get to the Arun Leisure Centre to watch a great evening's boxing. And to see the swansong of a man who is not just an inspiration to mature athletes, but to younger ones as well. Shoulders proved useful with the bat, too, as he notched 51, with Matthew Warren scoring 73 as Middleton reached 188 for 8 (47 overs). Max and Joe Ashmore were the
standout players for Bognor 1st XI as they secured a 55-run win over Ansty in Sussex Premier League 1st XI Division 2. Max Ashmore hit 51 as the home side elected to bat and scored 217 for 8 (53 overs), with Ryan Maskell offering a helping hand with a score of 45. Captain Andrew Grieg reached 27 before being bowled, and Rob Willow chipped in with 19, while Jamie Woolnough reached 18 at the Regis Oval. It was Joe Ashmore’s turn to grab the limelight when the visitors went into bat and he took five wickets for 45 including nine maidens from 20.2 overs. And Charlie Hunter took three wickets for six runs from four overs to help restrict Ansty to 162 for 10 (46.2 overs) and gave the home side victory and 30 points. Stirlands 2nd XI lost at home to Bognor Regis 2nd XI in Sussex Premier League 2nd XI Division 3 (West). Bognor fielded and Stirlands reached
131 for 10 (38.3 overs), with Tristan Gadsby on 33 and David Briance 27. THe visitors’ Joshua Broad took four wickets and Tom Woolnough picked off three before they went into bat. Broad hit 59 and Ollie Adams struck 28 to hand Bognor a six-wicket win when they totalled 132 for 4 (20.2 overs). Eranga Dissangge and Stuart Hanks did their best with the bat but Pagham 1st XI were defeated at Ifield in Sussex Premier League 1st XI Division 2. Eranga Dissangge and Stuart Hanks scored 63 and 42 respectively after the home side got to 241 for 2 dec (49 overs). It helped the visitors to 153 for 10 (42 overs) meaning they lost by 88 runs. He also hit 42no as they scored 119 for 8 (33.3 overs).
Aldwick out of luck ALDWICK 1st XI batsmen Keelan Belcher and Dan Robinson were in great form but couldn’t stop the home side losing at East Preston in West Sussex Invitation League Division 2. Belcher was in fine shape as he hit 76no, Robinson struck 73 (133 run partnership for the 5th wicket), and Scott Bingham made 27 as the visitors got to 214 for 6 (49 overs). John Young was on hand to take two wickets, both caught by Alex Cooper, and Josh Sargeant caught one each from the bowling of Robinson and Ollie Smith. But the home side chalked up a six wicket win as they scored 215 for 4 (38 overs). Meanwhile, Aldwick 2nd XI lost at
home to Chichester Priory Park 3rd XI in West Sussex Invitation League Division 6. Chichester won the toss and elected to field and the home side managed to score 106 for 10 (30.2 overs) with Grant Wilson ending up as top scorer with 21. It was the excellent bowling of Matthew Creswick that was the highlight of the innings though as he took five wickets for 20 runs. FORMER England international and top class professional Jimmy Harrison will lace up the gloves one more time on VK gym's white collar show, next week at the ripe old age of 50!. Taking after one of my idols, boxer Bernard Hopkins, the ex-professional has almost defied logic in the brilliant way he has kept his fitness while ageing. Harrison, who is a 5'6" pressure fighter, will have his final fight against the experienced Robbie Clay, who is a man HALF his age, at the July 30 show. Born in Wandsworth, south London, Harrison had a decorated amateur career, accumulating in 80 fights, an England captaincy, and an ABA final before turning over and racking up 22 starts as a professional between 1985-89. An honest and humble man, the level of respect I personally have for him stems from the sound advice he has given me over the years on my own career "I started boxing after seeing an exhibition bout down the local park and had to jump in and have a go," he recalls. "I was 12 years old so joined my local boxing club and never looked back. THe head coach of the club, Ray Fallone, looked after me throughout my whole career and was like a second Dad to me." After taking some decent scalps as a pro, Harrison's final fight was against the well known and big punching Pat Barrett, who would later go on to win, and keep, a British title. After the contest with Barrett, his professional career was cut short due to a motorbike accident that left his knee badly injured. On his retirement from boxing, he moved down to sunny Bognor Regis to start a family and new life, keeping himself fit by joining fellow senior athletes Keith Hardwell and Rodney Morley at the Tone Zone Runners group. It was upon stepping into the gym to take his son Louis to train at Bognor ABC's old Westloats Lane club, where Harrison got "the smell" and consequent desire to fight once more.

A spokesman said: "Students of Chichester college will become our under 19s team and will be playing their home games at on Wednesday afternoons." Wild about Jimmy Howell could take a chance on teen ace by Carl Eldridge sport@sussexpost.co.uk BOGNOR boss Jamie Howell hopes that striker Jimmy Wild can bolster Rocks’ attacking options with the big kick-off looming. Wild, 18, showed glimpses of raw talent in a solid start in the 3-0 pre-season friendly win over Chichester City. Howell believes Wild, left, signed from the Oaklands Park club, displayed enough promise for the manager to have faith that he can make the grade in the Ryman Premier League. Howell said: “Jimmy did well for us. He’s one for the future I think. He is only 18 but showed enough to suggest that he is worth keeping an eye on, considering
that we lost two attackers in the shape of Alfie Rutherford and Jason Prior to Havant.” Wild was one of a crop of players who featured in the match and could be handed a role for the club next season. Keeper Billy Granger, right, looks set to continue in goal when Bognor travel to Gosport for another friendly tomorrow (Saturday). But Howell isn’t sure if the former Chelsea U21 custodian will replace Grant Smith, who quit to join Boreham Wood in the close season, for next season. Howell added: “I think he has a few options.
