Students demand more cash CAMPAIGNING students have taken politics from their Bognor Regis classrooms into the community.

THe concerned pupils joined together to send an open letter yesterday to town MP and school standards minister Nick Gibb to warn him about the 'terrifying' cutbacks faced by the area's schools.

THe group's spokesman, Felpham Community College pupil Peter Reavey, says they want to meet him to get

answers about the low level of funds which has left schools and colleges in West Sussex starved of cash.

Peter, 15, said the shortage of money was starting to have a huge impact on schools around Bognor Regis.

"Our head teachers are doing a fantastic job keeping the schools going and keeping us learning. But now money is getting really, really desperate and there is no end in sight," he said.

THe group of nine students attend colleges in Mr Gibb's Bognor Regis and Littlehampton constituency. THeir intervention backs the WorthLess? campaign which was launched last year to highlight the situation which sees schools in the county get £20m a year less from the government than average.

for fairer treatment. THe open letter from the students adds to this action and asks Mr Gibb: "Why are school students in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton - and the rest of West Sussex - worth less than school students nearly everywhere else in England?

Last chance for firms to shape BID

THe funding will become available if owners of companies around central Bognor Regis agree to create a Business Investment District.

THis will see a 1.5 per cent levy added to business premises with an annual rateable value of more than £6,000. THis will create a yearly £140,000 to be spent on improvements decided by businesses.

THe initial priorities have been launched by town centre manager Toyubur Rahman, pictured above, led by the town centre management group of councils, business groups and the University of Chichester.

THey include promoting a better image of Bognor Regis, cutting crime and antisocial behaviour, stimulating the evening and night-time economy and better parking.

But they can be changed if businesses propose alternative views to Mr Rahman

by March 31. THey will be considered before the poll this June to decide if a BID should be created.

Bognor Regis Traders' Association

chairman Chris Heaps is backing the BID to give firms a say in the town.

He said: "Bognor Regis is a town that has so much potential and it is time for that potential to be realised, reversing decades of decline and building on recent improvements.

"THe town is on the up and the BID can keep this momentum going.

"If businesses work together in partnership to deliver the BID, Bognor Regis can become a more thriving, vibrant and exciting town centre."

If a BID is created, it will come into effect in June, 2018, and last for five years. It will be overseen by a management board of businesses around the town.

THose in favour of the BID include Morrisons, Wilkinsons, Boots, Butlin's, and Nationwide, as well as Simply Delicious and the William Hardwicke.

Jeremy Pardey, Butlin's resort director, said: "We will be voting 'Yes' for the BID. We need the town centre to be more welcoming and provide better attractions.

THis is what our customers tell us."

THe University of Chichester wants the bid to complement its investment.

Its Professor Seamus Higson said: "THe amenities and attractions of the town centre will play an important role in both the student and graduate experience."

New networking events prove popular with firms A WEEKLY networking event for Bognor Regis business owners has been a success in its first months.

Arun District Council officer Miriam Nicholls told councillors this week: "At the request of businesses, a weekly networking group has been established.

"Business Networking Bognor Regis meets at the Beachcroft Hotel at 7am each THursday.

"It is a group of invited businesses and only one type of each business is allowed. In the seven months it has been established, the event has generated around £140,000-worth of

work among its members."

THis was in addition to the support which had been provided as part of the Local Enterprise and Apprenticeship Platform project.

THis had seen just over £30,000 allocated in small business grants in the first round of funding from an award of some £71,000 from a West Sussex fund.

Ms Nicholls also told the council's Bognor Regis regeneration subcommittee 52 business representatives had attended a two-day boot camp to benefit from intensive support and 55 had been to workshops to seek advice.

Initial support for all year round seafront attraction

TURNING Bognor Regis into the botanical capital of the south coast has moved a step closer.

Councillors agreed on Monday to begin detailed talks about creating a miniEden Project on the town's seafront.

THe move was contained in 11 recommendations of which nine gained unanimous approvals from Arun District Council's Bognor Regis regeneration sub-committee.

THe sub-committee agreed to back the proposal for the larger winter gardens of 3,000sq m compared to one of 1,000sq m to create the maximum impact. THis option also creates a new theatre of 420450 seats compared to revamping the current 357-capacity venue.

For the Hothamton site, the subcommittee supported the creation of a park stretching its entire length rather than one confined to an edge.

But both ideas can be scaled back if their estimated respective costs of £50m-plus and more than £2.5m prove too expensive.

It could take another two years to finalise all the work required to turn the current concepts into a comprehensive set of proposals.

Consultant Simon Davis told the sub-committee's meeting on Monday,

attended by about 40 residents in the town hall, the preferred option would see the theatre moved to the eastern side of the plot of land between the Place St Maur and Clarence Road.

THis would enable the winter gardens to be created as an all-weather destination which could be used for children's attractions, cafes and bars, a performing space and temporary exhibitions as well as being packed with plants and trees from around the world.

“It would be 25m high and the space could be anything you want it to be,” said Mr Davis. “Having that ambition is really important when you start to go out and talk to other partner. It shows some confidence about what this place can achieve and what Bognor Regis can do.”

Alongside the attraction would be seafront flats with commercial uses on the ground floor in a building modelled on Abbey Sands in Torquay.

Parking would be provided in a decked area with three levels above the ground floor with some 200 spaces. THis was slightly bigger than the current car park's capacity to make up for the loss of spaces along THe Esplanade to enable a pedestrian friendly area to be created between the winter gardens and the beach.

At Hothamton, the aim is to create a better link between the seafront and the town centre and railway station. Parking would remain but most of the current spaces would become a boulevard-style park.

THe health centre could be demolished and replaced by flats above shops on the western side if the NHS was willing to be involved. If not, the scheme would skirt around the building. Water features, natural play, informal performances and space for markets will feature.

Cllr Gillian Brown, Arun's leader, said: “It's nice to see proposals which are as realistic as this for the town. We have been waiting for this.”

Cllr Ricky Bower said: “THe fact we will be using space around the theatre all year round is superb. THere have been at least three, or may be four, attempts at solving the problem of the Regis Centre over the last 30 years. THis has the promise of being deliverable and viable."

Station taxi site is to disappear TAXI drivers have reached the end of the road at Bognor Regis railway station.

THe cabbies carried their last passenger from their traditional office at the station on Tuesday.

THey might never return to an office there after 70 years of loyal service to train users through strikes and all weather conditions.

THe move has been made to enable major refurbishment work at the historic station to begin.

Steve Gordon, one of the affected drivers, said: "It's a sad day but we have to leave. We would've liked to have had temporary accommodation whilst the renovation works at the station were going on. But this was not an option that was offered or available to us."

THe drivers belong to the Bognor Regis Taxi Association, which put up its office on the north side of the station forecourt next to the taxi rank in 1947 off Richmond Road. THey had since plied their trade from there trading as Regis Taxis, pictured above.

THere were five drivers in the final months but they had numbered between six and ten in the past few years. Mr Gordon applied to join them in 1982 but was unable to gain entry for a further eight years.

At that time, there were 40 taxis in the town. THere are now about 300 in the Arun district and he estimates most of them are around Bognor Regis.

"We are nowhere near as busy as we used to be and we have been through everything with the railways - from strikes and erratic timetables to bad weather. We always bear the brunt from the passengers if there are any problems with the trains," said Mr Gordon.

THe drivers have been offered a site on the southern side of the concourse once the refurbishment in that area has been completed.

But Mr Gordon said: "We put in an offer but the railway company said it was not what they were looking for.

"THey said they would try to find other occupiers and let us know if they couldn't do that. So, we don't know if we will ever return to the station."

Ace Taxis has come to the drivers' rescue by taking over their phone number and enabling its address in Lennox Street to be used by them.

"BRTA will, therefore, be a subsidiary taxi company of Ace Taxis and access to BRTA can be made via our number, 01243 840840 or using the Ace Taxis app," said Mr Gordon. THe rank was still being used by the drivers yesterday.

` Jewellery stolen in house break-in BURGLARS have stolen jewellery from a house in Slindon Common.

THe break-in at the property in Sunny Box Lane happened between 9.30am-5.30pm on February 7.

Detectives would like to hear from anyone with information about the crime.

Volunteers are sought to help to litter-pick Bluebell Wood between Butlin's and the A259/High Street roundabout. THe tidy-up will take place from 11am-1pm and is being staged by the Bognor Regis in Bloom Working Group.

Rebecca Vervecken, who helps to organise the working group for Bognor Regis Town Council, said: "THe town's In Bloom group is backing the national campaign to get half a million people out and about cleaning up communities in March, 2017.

Students' call for more school cash

"Our headteachers are doing a fantastic job. THey have become experts at saving money at the same time as delivering a really good education.

"Teachers and students have got used to bigger classes, leaking roofs and broken computers that won't be replaced - and somehow we still learn.

"But now it is getting really, really desperate. Our head teachers have tried to warn you about the increasing risks to our education into the future.

"Now it is our turn as school students to support their WorthLess? campaign. We don't want to start a different campaign.

We just need our head teachers to be taken seriously.

"At the moment, our schools are deciding on their budgets for next year.

Every school we have talked to in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton has plans that are terrifying to us as school students.

"For example, there are plans to: • Drop essential subjects from the curriculum • Not replace teachers; • Remove support staff who enable students with special needs and disabilities to thrive at schools; • Reduce counselling and pastoral support; • Increase class sizes; and • Send some classes home at lunch time because there will not be enough teachers.

"We know that the new funding formula

could make things fairer eventually - but it will be years before funding for West Sussex schools matches other parts of the country.

"Many of us will have left school by then! If you recognise there is a really serious problem, why not fill the funding gap now?

"Even with the new funding formula, our schools will probably have no more money to spend anyway, because of the new rules making them pay extra costs towards National Insurance, pensions and some other costs.

"And West Sussex will stay as one of the worst funded areas - 148th out of 151.

So can you please explain to us why we continue to be WorthLess?"

THe students have asked Mr Gibb to meet them - and their families and supporters - later this month to talk to them to explain the funding shortfall.

"Some of us will bring our own examples of how the unfair funding is affecting us as school students," said Peter. His fellow campaigners are Ed, Harry, Jasmine, Jess, Joe, Kieran, Liberty and THeveenah.

Mr Gibb said he would be pleased to meet the students. THe new funding formula would see West Sussex schools receive 3.5 per cent extra funding.

"Schools in Bognor Regis and Littlehampton will receive a cash boost of some £1.5m. Of schools in the constituency, 81.8 per cent will see a rise in funding as a resuilt of the new formula," he said.

THis would help to overcome the past unequal funding situation.

Aldingbourne man to be jailed for sexual offences with girls AN ALDINGBOURNE man has been remanded in custody to await sentencing after he pleaded guilty to sexual activity with young girls.

At Portsmouth Crown Court on Monday, roofer Mitchell Jones, 23, of Nyton Road, pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual activity with a child aged 14 and one count of sexual activity with a child aged 15.

THe charges related to his offences against a 14-year-old girl in Chichester over three months in early 2015 and also with the older girl in Hampshire around the same time. He met both of them through social media.

Jones was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on April 28 at the same court. He has been warned he will receive a prison sentence and he will also be put on the sex offenders' register.

Detective Constable David Midgley, of Sussex Police's Chichester Investigations team, said: "Jones contacted the girls separately via social media and, despite knowing their ages, exploited them for his sexual gratification.

Anger at plan to axe trees SCORES of trees are set to be axed to make way for a cycle path from Flansham.

Some of the species - such as oak, ash and maple - along the A259 towards Littlehampton are protected by tree preservation orders.

But West Sussex County Council plans to chop them down or severely cut them to enable the 3m-wide off-road route, costing £1.4m, to be created soon.

THe work can be undertaken with no formal approval from planning officers at Arun District Council in spite of the preservation orders.

Bognor Regis Civic Society deputy chairman Hugh Coster described the proposals as monstrous and unacceptable without the chance for the public to comment on them.

"THe first thing anyone will know about it is when the county council start cutting and then it's too late," he said.

He said the desire to build the cycle link of some four miles between Flansham and Church Lane in Climping was no excuse to destroy the trees.

"THese councils hypocritically claim all sorts of green credentials and, maybe the cycle path is a green project, but how green is it to be damaging and destroying scores of trees?

"And, to cap it all, they have made no indication that they are going to replace what they destroy, which is what they require whenever an ordinary member of the public wants to do the same thing - and usually isn't allowed to anyway," said Mr Coster.

He maintained the plans for the trees'

destruction along the A259 should have been widely publicised and subject to consultation to enable residents to have their say.

"THe county council could still do this and we have written to ask them to do so," he said. "Meanwhile, both councils should undertake to respect and uphold tree preservation orders in future no matter who it is that makes the application.

"THat is only fair and honest, which is the way councils should behave."

A spokesman for West Sussex County Council said: “THese trees need to be felled for safety reasons. It will improve visibility for road users joining the A259, which is particularly important for those pedestrians and cyclists using the new route when it is built.

“New trees will be planted and we are establishing a suitable location for them at the moment," he said.

A spokeswoman for Arun District Council said: "West Sussex County Council submitted an application for work to trees.

"However, on February 10, the application was withdrawn by the county council as it has an exemption from requiring prior consent from Arun District Council to cut down, top, lop or uproot protected trees required to implement work that the highways authority is carrying out.

"It appears that the majority of the trees being worked on were not subject to protection as they are not in a conservation area or covered by a tree preservation order."

` Council in line for land charges wins THREE successes could be claimed by officers in Arun District Council's local land charges team.

THe staff members have reached the final stages in a trio of categories for the 2017 Land Data Local Land Charges Awards next week.

THe categories in which the team has been shortlisted are: local authority searches, best customer experience award and local land charges officer of the year.

Arun's cabinet member of planning, Cllr Ricky Bower, said: "Being shortlisted for such prestigious industry awards is a real testament to the hard work and high levels of services provided by the team."

` Police seize van in fly-tippers' hunt A WHITE van was seized in Bognor Regis town centre by police officers as it was believed to have been involved in fly-tipping in the area.

A Sussex Police statement on Twitter published last Friday said: "We are working with partner agencies to prosecute the owners."

A BOGNOR Regis woman reported as missing has been found in an hotel.

Police traced Karen THompson, 59, to Portsmouth on Wednesday.

Wheelchair is removed DISABLED Evelyn Matthews believes she is a prisoner in her Bognor Regis home.

She has been forced to move her wheelchair from outside the front door of her flat. Her mobility aid is in a locked cupboard and can only be removed if she asks the manager of her accommodation.

"I have to ask for my wheelchair every time I want to go out," she said. I'm not allowed to have the key to the cupboard but the wheelchair is my lifeline. I can't get out without it.

Mrs Matthews has stored her mobility aid outside the front door of her flat in Gerard Court since she moved there in November 2013.

But she was told it had to be taken away because of health and safety rules.

"THe matter is getting me down. Only the manager has the key to the cupboard and she works 9am2pm on weekdays. When she is not here, I will not be able to use the wheelchair."

Mrs Matthews, 80, said her one-bedroom first floor flat in the independent living accommodation for the over 60s was too small to enable her to keep her wheelchair inside her property.

"I have been in contact with the fire and rescue service and they said they didn't want to get involved in a dispute but that I should not be in this

flat. I should be in a ground floor flat," she said.

Mrs Matthews moved into the Upper Bognor Road premises with her late husband, Stan. He died at the age of 92 in June 2015.

"THe corridor outside my flat had wheelchairs and jardinieres in it," said Mrs Matthews.

THe stretch of hallway goes past the length of her flat before it ends with a window. No-one who visits her flat, and the one opposite, has to walk along it because the lift and stairs and other amenities are positioned in the opposite direction.

THe flats were built by Churchill Retirement Living and Mrs Churchill has contacted the company's managing agent for the flats, Millstream Management, to ask for permission to store her wheelchair in the corridor.

Millstream's southern area manager, Leila Manzi, said in a letter to Mrs Churchill she sympathised with her mobility problems. But she said: "Under the terms of your lease, items may not be stored in communal hallways. THe reason for this is to prevent accident or injury and you will find is a clause in all leases relating to apartment blocks.

"Your property is described in your lease as 'the demise' which does not include any of the corridors."

PROTESTORS have a month left to object against hundreds of planned homes in Pagham.

About 300 people who packed the latest meeting, pictured above, by the PAGAM campaign group, were told to keep making their views known about the proposals.

By Wednesday, the number of objections received by Arun District Council for the three intended schemes totalled some 1,350 letters with more being sent daily.

Pagham Parish Council chairman Cllr Ray Radmall said the current number of homes - up to 250 at Sefter Road, up to 300 at Hook Lane and up to 400 at Summer Lane (Church Barton Farm) - could rise further to 1,400 under Arun's latest thinking.

“If we get this number of houses, plus the 130 houses already approved, we are going to get 1,530 houses in a small part

of our area.

“Added to those could be another 2,500 homes nearby in North Bersted. It is totally unfair to impose this on us without proper consultation.

“Who wants to live in a damn city – the city of Pagham? THis would not only be damaging to our farming but also our tourism industry which brings in £2.4m to the local economy.

“Pagham is going to be a terrible shambles for five-10 years while the housing is going to be built. What the hell is that going to do to us and what is it going to do to Pagham? It will be a terrible thing to happen to Pagham and we are not going to let it happen."

THe meeting packed the ballroom at Church Farm Holiday Village last THursday. It was the latest event held by Pagham and Aldwick Greenfields Action Movement (PAGAM).

Concerns raised by the panel members and those in the audience included the impact of the extra residents on roads, the loss of high grade farmland for housing, the need for more GPs and school places and the risk of flooding.

One resident complained: "Pagham is being dumped on. We are a far corner of Arun - forgotten and unloved."

Michael Warden, an Aldwick parish councillor speaking personally, said: “THis place, as we know if all the houses come about, will come to a standstill.

“What we seem to get is a plethora of housing where people come just to live here. THey do not work here and go in and out every day. It does not need an expert to tell us what that means."

Burglary appeal WITNESSES are being sought after a break-in at a Bognor Regis flat.

A male burglary walked into a bedroom of the property in Victoria Drive holding a knife after he broke in through a window.

He walked through the property before he returned to the bedroom and stole £30 cash. He left through the broken window.

THere were no reported injuries. THe victim was asleep in bed when the burglary began.

THe suspect has been described as about 6ft tall, between 20-30 years of age with dark hair and wearing dark clothing with a red handkerchief over

his face.

Witnesses are being sought to the incident which took place last THursday, February 23.

Investigator Tom Carpenter said: "We would like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time and who saw or heard anything suspicious."

MOTORISTS from Bognor Regis will face continued delays travelling from the town after the government scrapped planned improvements on the A27.

All the potential projects for the road were dumped by Chris Grayling, the secretary of state for transport.

He told Highways England chief executive on Tuesday: "I have considered all the representations and understand that this is a controversial scheme.

"THe support and funding contribution by the local authorities are both vital to its successful delivery. After the withdrawal of support by the local councils for the shortlisted options and significant local campaigns, I am cancelling this scheme."

Highways England had been seeking to upgrade five junctions along the existing A27 south of Chichester. It staged a consultation into the ideas last summer.

But the lack of a northern option for a new bypass led to major campaign for it to be re-instated.

Special day is for men and women

` Drivers warned to obey phone law FIREFIGHTERS have joined the police in urging drivers around Bognor Regis to obey the new mobile phone law.

THe penalties for motorists who use a phone while driving doubled on Wednesday to a ÂŁ200 fine and six points on their driving licence.

Receiving six points on a licence which has been held for less than two years will see it revoked.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service's intervention and prevention deputy manager, Adrian Carter, said: "Firefighters regularly see the terrifying consequences of road traffic collisions and as a service we fully support these tougher penalties on all drivers caught using a phone."

For Sussex and Surrey police forces, Supt Chris Moon said: "Using your mobile phone while driving has long been a very dangerous activity and is a reason for many serious crashes.

"THe new penalties reflect this and show that using a mobile phone while driving won't be tolerated."

Leaflet event starts season VISITOR attractions will be gathering in Bognor Regis next week to launch the 2017 summer season.

More than 55 of the West Sussex tourism hotspots will take part in the latest leaflet exchange in the conference centre at Butlin's from 10am-1pm next Wednesday.

THe destinations will include the Weald and Downland Living Museum, West Dean Gardens, the South Downs Planetarium, Chichester Cathedral and Arundel Castle.

All will bring new publicity material for the coming year which businesses will be able to look around and take away.

Dr Andy Clegg, the chairman of Visit Chichester, organises the annual event.

He said: "THis event is critical in helping to raise the profile of the enviable tourism experiences we have on our doorstep and maximising the value of tourism to the

local economy.

"THe event serves to showcase the fantastic tourism offer we have across West Sussex.From heritage to the arts, activities to events - everything is represented."

THe well-established occasion comes as the pound loses value because of the fallout from Brexit to make British holidays more attractive to many tourists.

"No doubt we can expect to see a continued resurgence in the staycation market as holidaymakers choose to holiday at home," said Dr Clegg.

Visit Chichester will use the leaflet exchange to launch its 2017 visitor guide with a distinctive cover which uses images from Chichester graphic artist Christopher Gibson.

Entry to the day is free. Visitors should use the main Butlin's entrance. No preregistration is required.

MEN ARE being invited to join in the Bognor Regis celebration of International Women's Day for the first time.

THis year's event is next Wednesday and the organisers want to involve both sexes in seeking answers to the problems which can blight women's lives.

Annabell Alexander, who chairs the My Sisters' House Community Interest Company, said: "It is a day to celebrate the past achievements of women, to enjoy a day of sisterhood and encourage an awareness of the issues yet to be resolved and to plan a way forward.

"On that basis, My Sisters' House have decided the theme of their event this year is Combined Solutions: for the combined burden of violence, abuse and poverty in the lives of women.

"THe combined solution being from both mixed gender and inter-agency.

"THis year sees an unusual step forward for International Women's Day in this area, as most of the event will be open to men as well, with some womenonly spaces where women can enjoy some meditation, holistic therapies and pampering."

THe event will be held from 11am7pm at the Regis Centre. To get it started, women are invited to join in an international circle outside the seafront building to celebrate diversity and sisterhood. Lessons in giving from charity week

THe pupils supported Cancer Research UK, Chestnut Tree House children's hospice and Help for Heroes during their latest charity week.

THe five days were packed with a range of fun activities with a serious purpose which everyone involved eagerly looks forward to.

As well as the students, staff, governors, parents and the surrounding community joined in.

THeir efforts are expected to have raised some ÂŁ4,000 in line with past years to be divided equally between the good causes.

Headteacher Mark Anstiss said: "Charity week has been in the school diary for nearly 30 years.

"Every year we run a brilliant and action-packed programme of activities and it is great to see everyone getting involved. We run events for charity throughout the academic year but this is the week we go all out and unite as a school to raise as much as possible.

"THe students vote for who they want to support and we are always proud of the choices they make.

"Well done to everyone for their efforts this year. We look forward to the cheque presentation ceremony later this month."

THe timetable for charity week is organised by the college's students and co-ordinated by the sixth form charity committee.

All the 1,300-plus pupils, as well as members of staff led by teacher Nicole Matthews as the college's charity organiser, took part in the week to ensure its traditional popularity among all age groups was maintained.

THe activities included the hugely popular Felpham's Got Talent, the very chaotic sponsored dog walk, sponge throws at staff who included Mr Anstiss and sporting fun such as dodgeball football and swimming.

Break and lunch times were also busy with budding young enterpreneurs out selling various edible and homemade goods.

Year 13 student Alice Jarvis said: "I chose to be a member of the charity committee at the college as I like to be an active part of the school and make a difference.

"I have taken part in charity week since Year 7 so I was really excited to be involved in actually organising the week.

"I ran the Year 7 penny challenge where students were encouraged to bring in pennies and make things out of them and I was backstage at all the Felpham's Got Talent performances supporting the performers and organising the shows.

"I also organised the sixth form fancy dress day on the Friday. It was a really good week and great fun."

` Charity shops' Lent campaign CHARITY shops for the Mount Noddy Animal Re-homing Centre have launched a campaign for Lent.

THe outlets in Chichester, Bognor Regis and Horsham have launched a Don't Give Up, Give Away scheme for the period before Easter.

It is based on the idea of giving away donations for Lent instead of the tradition of giving up.

A spokeswoman said: "Mount Noddy are asking people to fill a bag with 40 items, one a day, of anything around your home you no longer need, use or wear, until Easter and donate it at the end of the 40 days."

New book pays tribute to maligned soldiers in war

` Apprenticeships are on the increase MORE than 100 young people in the Arun district have become apprentices in the past full year.

THe number of 16 to 18-yearolds in the area who signed up to apprenticeships grew by 120 to 1,373 in 2015/16. THe growth of 9.6 per cent is one of the highest in the Coast to Capital area, which extends beyond West Sussex and Brighton and Hove.

Cllr Stephen Hillier, a senior member of the county council, said: "We have a hugely talented population in West Sussex so it is significant to see more and more people using apprenticeships to enhance those skills and turn them into a profession."

FIRST-TIME Pagham author has paid homage to forgotten soldiers in a gritty tale based on the life of his late father.

Mike Lemmon penned George; Hero, Deserter, Lover in admiration of his dad's wartime service. He adapted his original idea for a factual military history based around the Allied campaign in Italy in the Second World War to a gritty tale of fighting, romance and the need to rebuild shattered lives when he began to research the over-looked fighting.

Mike said: "I began to realise that very few people actually know about the Italian campaigns during the war. Yet so many men from all over the world were killed in those bitter conflicts.

"THey have been done an injustice by being known as 'D-Day Dodgers' because Churchill thought Italy was the soft underbelly of the whole campaign. But that is unfair. Monte Cassio overshadows the valley on the way to Rome and allowed the Germans to pick off the Allied troops as they came up from Naples.

"When you go there, you realise how horrendous it was. I think about ten armies from around the Commonwealth fought there and there are so many graves."

THe novel is a tragic and deeply moving account of George, a Royal Fusilier in the 1st Battalion City of London Regiment.

He is deployed from 1936-39 to India in contrast to his childhood in east London.

But wartime sees him deployed amid the horrors of the North African deserts,

Egypt, Syria and Iraq until 1944 and to Monte Cassio until the war ends in 1945.

Gut-wrenching bombardments at the pivotal battle result in George having to watch as his comrades are dismembered.

Shattered by the gruesome sights, George deserts from the war-torn hillside in his desperation to get away from a site where 55,000 men lost their lives.

THe story is loosely based on Mike's dad, George Lemmon, who fought at Monte Cassino, in a family tradition of soldiers.

George would have been 100 last month.

"I wanted to research my father's military service," said Mike, 68, of Wolsey Close.

"It's taken me a while to do. I got a lot of the information in 2009 but it became harder and harder because there are gaps in the records."

After the war, George finds romance and tranquility in a vineyard in the green hills of Italy, is welcomed by the Italians and meets Margaretta.

He returns to London in 1946 only to receive a letter from Italy that sets him on a path to change his future.

Born in London, Mike enjoyed success with his own design company before he moved to Pagham.

His second book will be the contrasting tale of sex addict Peter in the frivolous world of the creative industry with murder and destruction involved.

Racing legend hands over prams' funds MOTOR racing legend Derek Bell has presented the proceeds of Pagham's biggest community event to dozens of good causes.

Derek is the president of the Pagham Pram Race's organising committee and helped to ensure its latest presentation night was a big success. The groups received Helping Others awards of varying amounts totalling nearly £12,000 as a result of the latest of the Boxing Day spectaculars and other supporting activities during other months.

Pram race chairman and businessman Mike Warren said: "It's so nice to see so many good causes benefiting from the fundraising we do as a committee each year. We work hard to raise funds from our bingo nights, horse race nights and, of course, the oldest pram race in the world on Boxing Day so that we can help local groups and people.

"We are also grateful to all the local companies like Slated Barn and Newbarn Kia, Osborne Refrigerators and dozens of other companies who - with their sponsorship - ensure that every penny donated can be given to the local groups who need it."

The special evening at the Inglenook Hotel in Pagham last Wednesday continued Derek's lengthy involvement with the pram race.

He grew up in Pagham and was

based there during probably the most successful British sportscar racing driver.

He won the famous Le Mans 24 Hours race five times between 1975-87 and also took the chequered flag twice in the World Sportscar Championship and three times in the 24 Hours of Daytona.

The pram race began in 1946 and involves pairs of babies and pram pushers completing a three mile circuit around Pagham and drinking three pints a beer along the way.

` Turnstile plan for Rolls-Royce site PROPOSALS for an electronically controlled turnstile to control access to the Rolls-Royce Technology and Logistics Centre in North Bersted have been submitted to Arun District Council for planning approval.

Welcome to winter gardens of Bognor THOUSANDS of plants from around the world could turn Bognor Regis into the botany capital of the south coast.

THe range of varieties - which could include palms, eucalyptus trees, pines and a constant relay of bedding plants - would be housed within a seafront winter gardens unique to the area.

Measuring some 3,000sq m, according to the initial plans agreed by councillors on Monday, the giant greenhouse would surround a new and expanded theatre of some 450 seats to replace the Regis Centre.

THe £50m scheme would transform the site and also include an eye-catching spire, 51 flats over five floors above a range of shops and cafes and 200 parking spaces.

A 75-bed hotel and a Brewer's Fayre is envisaged for the town hall.

Consultant Kay Elliott, one of eight to have worked for Arun District Council on the town's latest regeneration options, states: "Although the winter gardens would be dominated by wonderful botanical/horticultural displays, there are opportunities to enhance and supplement those with a vivarium, aquarium or other insect, butterfly, reptile or fish features to broaden the appeal of the displays."

A science corner which explained the unique micro-climate of Bognor Regis could also add further interest for visitors.

"Water fountains are another familyfocused feature which could either be integrated within the winter gardens or sited outside on the piazza space or enhanced promenade/beach-front space...

"When these powerful ingredients are combined with the opportunity for staging seasonally focused events, both within the winter gardens and on the external piazza space, the new Regis Centre site could offer a unique and compelling mix with the critical mass to serve and appeal to both the resident population of Bognor Regis whilst also drawing visitors and tourists into the area from further afield," states the Kay Elliott masterplan.

FORGET SeaLife, a Lego Discovery Centre or Madame Tussauds - that's the verdict of the consultants who have compiled the current regeneration ideas for Bognor Regis.

THey say the 'leisure box' proposals, which have featured in previous schemes stretching back three decades, would fail to work in the town because of a lack of potential operators or a facility capable of attracting enough visitors.

THe report by Kay Elliott consultants says: "Nevertheless, Bognor Regis has the opportunity specifically with the Regis Centre redevelopment, to create an extremely individual and interesting scheme with the potential to draw and sustain significant audiences, and the family audience, in particular.

"We are proposing a mix of cultural and leisure uses focused on two core elements:

* a reconfigured Alexandra THeatre providing a cultural hub for the performing arts * a winter gardens complex, similar in concept positioned alongside and connected with the cultural hub "THis will create an attraction in its own right containing a range of both permanent and temporary activities and events within a wonderful botanical/ horticultural setting," she said.

THis will be part giant greenhouse, part horticultural display, part events space and part leisure attraction, according to Kay Elliott.

A flexible gallery space should also be included to host temporary and touring exhibitions to add further interest. Twothirds are under 200sq m but those such as dinosaurs which are aimed at children can attract large numbers of families.

New park plans

THe 215 spaces at the Hothamton car park could be transformed into an attractiive open space to create a green corridor from the seafront.

Parking areas would still be provided at the location to ensure its popularity was maintained in the need to serve the town centre's businesses.

But the current vista of solely Tarmac would be replaced by a more pleasing sight amid the built-up surroundings.

THe regeneration options report by consultants, who include Kay Elliott, says a new park of some 3,000sq m will create a strong link between the railway station and the promenade as well as the chance for convenience stores and food and drink outlets.

"THe leisure development concept for the Hothamton site focuses, in terms of public realm, on the creation of a French-style boulevard or avenue - a linear park - in part to provide parking spaces but more significantly to provide something of a green lung or spine within the site.

"THis feature will serve as an informal gathering place - a tree-lined colonnade that can provide relaxation and recreation through a variety of offers.

"THis option establishes a new significant piece of public realm incorporating replacement of existing parking spaces, which could include retail pavilions as well as new children's play area, possible senior gym and other outdoor uses.

"New development would be in two or more buildings to the western side of the

new park on the site of the existing health centre and on the western side of the current car park.

"THe buildings could accommodate retail at ground floor with residential, student accommodation or other forms of residential use at upper floors."

Two buildings are envisaged, whether or not the NHS agrees to the health centre being included in the plans.

One would contain 550sq m of commercial use on the ground floor of one and eight floors above with 77 flats and a penthouse.

THe other will be six floors tall and have 30 flats. A total of 205 public parking spaces is included as well as 105 for the two buildings.

THe existence of 17-storey Fitzleet House sets the precedent for higher buildings than are currently on the site.

THe principle of the area, according to Kay Elliott, is 'the creation of a clear and legible landscaped park, improving connections to the promenade, improved quality of car parking and provide a focus for new public activity and events'.

It would also accommodate the needs of a range of ages and abilities in a safe, fully accessible space which is easy to get around.

THe park is seen as a place to relax, for music performances, seasonal and artisan markets and art installation.

Permanent features such as the gym, a bandstand and adventure golf would be joined by holiday attractions like craft fairs, international boules events, night markets and Christmas markets. THis would ensure it was a popular area with residents and visitors.

"THe Hothamton site is not seen as competing with the Regis Centre by as a complementary facility with perphaps a rather greater focus on the local residential population and workforce," the report adds.

` Warning about plan for hotel in town hall TURNING Bognor Regis Town Hall into a Premier Inn would inflame many residents, councillors were warned.

Cllr Francis Oppler said the proposal would unnecessarily inflame people.

"We have not got many buildings of significance and of historic importance to the town," he said.

"THis building is important to many people and has the history of the town in it since it was built. I am disappointed it has been included in this plan. I seriously think it should remain outside of that."

THe past row about the possible multiplex in the St Modwen scheme for the Regis Centre showed how one unpopular element of a proposal could undermine support for other aspects.

"People will fixate on that element and not see the good things," he said.

THe Arun-owned town hall was built in 1929 on the corner of Belmont Street and Clarence Road. It is a Grade II listed building because of its historic importance.

His comments at the Bognor Regis regeneration sub-committee of Arun District Council followed comments by Arun's consultant, Simon Davis.

"THe town hall building itself is quite difficult to convert but quite good in terms of being part of the publicly accessible usage and a hotel would be quite a good facility to use a room like this (the council chamber) for wedding receptions, meetings and events."

Cllr Paul Wells was the only subcommittee member of the eight to object to talks being held between Arun and Bognor Regis Town Council about the town hall's future. He also abstained on voting for the winter gardens idea and using a section of THe Esplanade for pedestrian priority.

Town verges due for first cut of the year f Dr Andy Clegg

Academic's Lego video is viral hit A VIDEO which showcases the use of Lego has proved to be an unexpected hit for an academic at the University of Chichester.

Dr Andy Clegg, a principal lecturer in learning and teaching, posted a short video which showed him talking about the use of Lego on the department's Facebook page.

THe film has reached more than 13,500 people so far.

Dr Clegg, a senior fellow of the Higher Education Academy, is a proponent of play in higher education and uses Lego to enhance student creativity and critical thinking.

He said: "Lego is a fantastic medium to help students build models reflecting

their own thoughts, reflections and ideas.

"THe video posted summaries how Lego was used to help them understand the basic elements of sustainability.

"Everybody has played with Lego and it is a great way to get students working collaboratively together, which they really enjoy.

"THe use of Lego is a very visual, auditory and textual process where business issues can be discussed through story-making, and playing out possible scenarios."

Developed in the mid-1990s, Lego Serious Play is an established methodology used in higher education and businesses.

GRASS verges around Bognor Regis are set to receive their first cut of the year this month.

THe green spaces will see West Sussex County Council's contractors in action for the first time in four months.

Cllr Bob Lanzer, the council's cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "Grass cutting is a major part of our highways maintenance operation and, even though it's still winter, our teams will be out making verges neat and safe. We cut the grass in urban areas an extra two times a year more than the national standard."

THe first cuts of the year were made in various areas on Monday. THe teams of workers are travelling around the county.

It normally takes them four to six weeks to cover the county, weather permitting.

THe cutters are due to be in Ford, Barnham and Yapton from next Monday.

THey should move into Bognor Regis on March 13 for a couple of days before they finish in the surrounding areas at the start of the following week.

Urban areas have seven cuts from March to November with lawnmowers and strimmers.

Rural sites, or those without pavements, have one overall cut a year. Rural verges are maintained to enable pedestrians to avoid walking on the road and two onemetre cuts are made to stop grass and vegetation overhanging the road.

Rural cuts are carried out by teams who use tractors. Cut grass is not collected, to keep costs down.

Featuring the talented performers of Frankie's Guys, this show is a fun and fastpaced celebration of the music of not just Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons but music of the 1960s as well, including hits by other artists such as Roy Orbison and Jackie Wilson.

Frankie's Guys were founded over two years ago by experienced singer David Griego, who was inspired by the music his dad used to love and perform himself.

Since then, the group have taken the UK

by storm with tours around the country as well as coveted slots performing on cruise ships.

Frankie's Boys pride themselves on their energetic shows filled with lively choreography, authentic costumes and pitch perfect harmonies.

Relieving MS symptoms using a holistic approach MULTIPLE Sclerosis (MS) is a disease that we all know about, but...how many of us really know what it is or how it affects people with this diagnosis? It is a disease of the central nervous system (your brain and spinal cord).

THe central nervous system cells are covered in a protective layer of fatty protein called the myelin sheath (a bit like the insulation on an electrical cable).

MS is an autoimmune disease, where the immune system gets confused and instead of attacking an infection or virus, it turns on itself and attacks this protective sheath. THis process is called demyelination. THe demyelination disrupts the ‘messages’ being transmitted from and to the brain, causing them to slow down, become distorted or not get through at all.

Approximately 100,000 people in the UK have multiple sclerosis and there are roughly three times as many women with MS as men. MS is usually diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40, although children and older adults can develop MS but this is less common.

Looking after yourself naturally can make a huge difference to your symptoms and help you to lead the life you want.

So what are the top things you can do if you are living with MS? 1 - Start taking vitamin D. A lack of this vitamin may be a cause of MS. Studies show clusters of MS sufferers in areas around the world that lack consistent amounts of sunlight. Get a vitamin D test and boost your level with a good vitamin

D3 supplement that also includes vitamin K2 to ensure its efficacy. THe main source of vitamin D is the sun. Twenty minutes a day in the morning sun with plenty of skin showing will help, but if you have a deficiency, reverse it as soon as possible.

2 - Stop using the microwave. Irradiated food isn't healthy and it’s simple to live without!

3 - Eat organic foods and stay away from GMOs. GMO stands for genetically modified organism. Over 50 countries worldwide can’t be wrong about banning GMO foods, so stay away.

4 - Eat plenty of good fats. Avocados, coconut oil, nuts, seeds etc as they are rich in proteins and good omegas, which help to reduce inflammation and pain.

5 - Get tested for food sensitivities. Some food allergies and sensitivities are known to make MS symptoms worse because the reaction they cause creates widespread inflammation throughout your body. Avoid toxic fizzy drinks

and processed foods.

6 - Get a blood test. Check your vitamin levels and heavy metal levels. Many MS sufferers are extremely low in several vitamins, and heavy metal toxicity can mimic many multiple sclerosis symptoms. Find out where your body stands in terms of these issues.

7 - Add tons of veggies to your diet. Yes the green stuff!

Spinach, kale, cucumbers, broccoli and cabbage offer MS patients a lot of phytonutrients that can benefit health.

8 - Start a massage protocol. Massage will help stimulate lymphatic flow and circulation, increase joint flexibility and can even help with muscle spascity.

9 - Exercise. Swimming, walking, biking, Pilates and yoga are all recommended. Lifting weights provides the most benefits to keep your muscles and core strong enough to support you. Staying strong is essential for both the mind and body.

10 - Raise your body’s pH with alkaline water. THe body functions at its best in an alkaline state. Water used to be neutral, but now it can lean more towards being acidic which can contributes to inflammation. Alkaline water helps decrease inflammation.

11 - Be careful with your bottled water. Although it may be convenient, bottled water in low quality plastic bottles can be damaging. If plastic bottles have been sitting in heat and sun, this can cause leaching of chemicals (BPA) from the plastic. BPAs are known carcinogens that may cause cancer and other autoimmune challenges.

12 - Say no to aspartame and MSG. It’s so important to read labels. You may be shocked, but aspartame and MSG

are popping up in all kinds of foods, including gum, breads, cereals, canned goods, convenience foods and processed foods. Aspartame wasn't made for human consumption, and toxicity from aspartame and MSG mimic many MS symptoms.

13 - Go gluten free or limit gluten consumption. If you’re sensitive to gluten, it will cause widespread inflammation in the body.

14 - Laugh. THis is honestly one of the most important things you can do. Humour and laughter strengthen your immune system, boosts your energy, and protects you from the damage of stress. It decreases stress hormone levels, decreases pain and improves your mood.

Daniel Field delves into the menu at The Spotted Cow in Hunston THE SPOTTED Cow is indeed easily spotted- on the main road through to Selsey, nestled in the lovely village of Hunston. It is an ideal place to stop off after a long country walk or for anyone in need of rest and refreshment.

From the outside it has the appearance of a classic British country Pub as well as providing ample parking. Inside it is charming and rustic, but with an airy conservatory style dining room with scrubbed wooden tables and lots of natural light from the high ceilings and windows.

Light background music and the murmur of conversation from families enjoying their lunch made for a relaxed and welcoming ambience as I studied the menu.

Father and son team Paul and Ben Evans took the Spotted Cow on just over three months ago. Paul is highly experienced and a well-known chef locally, and grasped the opportunity to showcase his own style of cuisine, having gained a fantastic reputation as a chef at other local gastropubs.

THe lunch menu, at THe Spotted Cow, devised by Paul himself features some classic dishes, with his own stamp, such as London Pride battered fish and chips, pie of the day with mash and greens, and the ‘cow burger’ with spicy tomato chutney.

Paul proudly explained all of the meals are home cooked by himself from fresh,

locally sourced ingredients.

I opted for the feather blade steak steak with pearl onions, an relatively unusual cut, known to be lean and tender with it’s firm texture and good flavour.

THis hearty stew arrived in a pristine white bowl with generous chunks of steak in a thick glossy brown gravy, the meat tender from ten hours of slow cooking.

THis richness was beautifully offset by the piquant pearl onions and a silky smooth scoop of mashed potato and fresh green broccoli.

THis dish deseved a wine with enough body to compliment it, and a big glass of the fruity Australian Jacana Shiraz Riverina, a dark spicy full-bodied red was just the job.

Paul is keen to put the Spotted Cow on the culinary map by offering superb, wholesome and clean cuisine, and has also committed to investing in a refurbishment of the interior to take place in the early spring which will result in more intimate seating and general modernisation of the décor and facilities.

THere is no doubt that due to this it will become ever more busy with locals and holiday makers alike.

As well as lunch the restaurant is open for dinner between 6pm and 9pm Tuesday to Saturday, with Sunday roast served between 12pm and 4pm.

Top Marks for lovely bubbly Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

LAST week I was lucky enough to be invited to a Marks and Spencer wine-tasting event hosted by the inimitable and effervescent Cécile Bergart of Hampshire Wine School, pictured right with yours truly!

THis lady entranced the audience of circa 80 enthusiasts with wit, anecdotes and imparting much wine knowledge and insight without a soupçon of pretension!

Cécile hails initially from the Champagne region and began her career importing Champagne and now has specialised in training people about the vagaries of wine production.

Cécile began the tasting-session by introducing a Demi-Sec Oudinot Rosé Champagne accompanied by hand-cooked ready salted crisps to support her theory that Champagne should be served with some food accompaniment. However, with my Henry Cooper-like predilection for Brut , I opted to review the M&S Oudinot 25th anniversary Cuvée Rosé Brut, a lively rosé Champagne oozing ripe strawberry fruit, a hint of cream and exhibiting a pleasingly dry aftertaste. THe delicate peachy-pink colour has been achieved by allowing the

juice to mingle for a few hours with the crushed grape skin.

A good celebratory fizz that will not disappoint and, given that the 25 per cent offer of six bottles endures well into March, this could be yours for just £18 if one of six!

We now venture into the realm of white wine with a recommendation by Cécile to explore Spanish wines in view of their good value for money. We proceeded to taste the 2015 Castillo De Monterey Godello – Godello is the new kid on the block in Galicia superseding even Albariño, and this wine indubitably exemplifies the progress made in Spanish white wine production. Cecille expertly paired this wine with smoked salmon and this wine complements this sort of dish admirably. Relatively crisp and unoaked, this rounded, fruity white wine oozes peach and tropical fruit flavours and is a well-crafted wine and, if one of six, reduces in price to just over seven pounds and has undoubted merit, in my view.

THe first red wine proposed by Cécile was a Domaine de la Meynarde 2015 Plan De Dieu Côtes Du Rhône Villages which she chose to pair with Melton Mowbray pork pies.

Grown in the north of Vaucluse between Châteauneuf du Pape and Rasteau in the plain of Plan de Dieu using vines over thirty years old which add layers of flavour, this decidedly smooth red can be purchased for £7.50, if one of six bottles. THis wine is full of ripe summer fruits backed up with warm spices and black pepper and has red berry plushness - a lovely wine to imbibe on a dark evening and a wine that will undoubtedly not disappoint!

M&S hosted this evening with great aplomb and furnished all the wine and food with warm hospitality.

Given their current offer of 20 per cent off any three wines and 25 per cent off any six bottles I would like to take this opportunity of recommending other wines of distinction.

I commence with a stunning white wine, namely the

Mâcon-Villages 2015 whose rich straw colour would indicate a grape from mature vines and has nutty and peach flavours and, being unoaked, is refreshingly clean on the palate and a wine to truly savour reduced to £8, if one of three, or £7.50, if one of six.

A chance encounter with Roger Nash in M&S Chichester led me to follow his recommendation of the Terres de Moraines Madiran 2012. THis wine from the south-west of France has a distinctive character from the local Tannat grape, tannat by name, tannic by nature, but the Cabernet Sauvignon in the mix makes it more approachable and it exudes rich, dark fruit and spice and, if one of six, can be purchased for under £7.50 – well worth a punt. Open this wine for at least half an hour before imbibing - you will reap the dividend!

So fill your boots at M&S and thank you to them for an excellente soirée! A la prochaine!

Roast cod and clams with bacon mash and creamy shallot sauce

4 thick cod fillets, 160g (5¾oz) each A little seasoned flour 75g (2½oz) unsalted butter 2 tbsps rapeseed oil 750g (1lb 10oz) baby spinach 6 rashers smoked dry-cure streaky bacon, rind removed 1½kg (3lb 3oz) Maris Piper potatoes cut into 7.5cm (3in) pieces 50g (1¾oz) unsalted butter White pepper 1kg (2¼lb) Venus or palourde clams, scrubbed and soaked for two hours in salted water (use cockles if clams are unavailable) ½ large glass of dry white wine (nothing oaky) 2 shallots or 1 small onion, very finely chopped 300ml (10fl oz) double cream 1 heaped tbsp thyme leaves Juice of ½ lemon

1 Pre-heat the oven to 180°C/gas mark 4.

8. Reserve 12 of the clams in their shells for garnish and shell the rest.

2. For the mash, put the bacon on a non-stick baking tray in the oven for about 10 minutes until crisp. Cool and crumble, reserving a few rashers for the garnish.

9. Pour the clam juice into a pan and add the remaining shallots.

3.Boil the potatoes for about 20 minutes until tender. Drain, return to the pan, add the butter and mash well.

4. Season with the white pepper and stir in the bacon.

5 To make the sauce, put the clams in a large pan with the wine and half the shallots.

6. Cook, covered, over a high heat -- shaking from time to time -- for about four-and-a-half minutes until the clams have opened.

7. Discard any that haven't. Drain into a colander over a bowl to catch the juice.

10. Simmer for 10 minutes until reduced slightly, then add the cream.

Simmer for a further five minutes then, if you wish, blend until smooth using a hand blender.

11. Add the thyme and clam meat and check the seasoning, adding a little lemon juice. Keep the sauce warm.

15. In the meantime, heat the remaining butter and add the washed spinach. Cook until wilted, then season and drain it.

16. To serve, spoon mash on each plate. Top with three clams in their shells, spinach, a piece of cod and some bacon. Pour the sauce around the fish and over the top.

12. To cook the cod, coat the skin side with seasoned flour. Put 50g (1¾oz) butter and the oil in a nonstick ovenproof frying pan over medium heat until frothing.

Community News & Views AFTER-SCHOOL activities are being held in a revived Bognor Regis club.

THe 39 Club re-opened last THursday after seven years. Four young people took the chance to enjoy pool and table soccer. Five potential volunteers expressed an interest in helping out.

THe club's initial opening times will be 4pm-6pm on Tuesdays in the annexe of the FindItOut centre in Church Path, off Glamis Street. Management committee chairman Vicky Hennessy said: "We can change the times if young people want us to. Because we are independent, we can do what we want to do."

One of those who went along on the first day was 16-year-old engineering student Naomi Taylor. She enjoyed playing Rapidough and Jenga with Caitlin Tysoe, aged ten, pictured below.

Pagham resident Noami said: "I know the club are looking for volunteers to help them out and I wanted to come along because I'm a similar age to the young people. It might be easier for them to talk to me or play games with them.

"It's nice to help people and make them happy rather than just doing another assignment for my course when I'm ahead in my studies anyway."

THe original 39 Youth Club was closed by West Sussex County Council to save money on its youth service. Most of the building re-opened a few years ago as one of its FindItOut centres. A team of volunteers negotiated with the council to revive the club.

THe initial response on the night pleased Vicky. "It gives you enthusiasm that we are not sitting here on our own and drinking tea," she said. "But it is obvious it will take six months to really build up. It's not going to happen overnight."

But she said she was disappointed in the response of many parents during a publicity event in the London Road precinct on the opening day. Club entry is £1 a child with refreshments available.

A CHANCE to take part in some open mic poetry is available in Chichester later this month.

Chichester Library will host the occasion at 7.30pm on March 23 where the poetry will mix with live music for a stimulating combination.

Distinguished poets John Greening and Penelope Shuttle will be reading from their new collaboration, Heath, which draws from their childhoods.

THe pair were raised on opposite sides of Hounslow Heath, pictured above, near

Heathrow Airport, which was once described as the 'most dangerous area of England'.

Penelope and John have had numerous poetry collections published between them as well as a stream of awards and nominations.

Penelope's work is also frequently broadcast on BBC radio.

THe event at the library in Tower Street will feature live music from classical guitarist and West Sussex Guitar Club teacher Linda Kelsall-Barnett.

Tickets cost £5, including a glass of wine, from the library.

DEVOTED volunteer Lois Brown celebrated her latest birthday surrounded by her friends in a Bognor Regis community.

Lois, pictured below, enjoyed a sumptuous cake and a party at L'Arche Bognor Regis on Sunday a few days after she reached 81.

She has been involved with the faith-based community charity, which supports vulnerable people with learning disabilities, since January, 1981.

She said: "I enjoy being with the people here. Everybody is so happy. I like spending time with them and I've got a lot of friends here."

Many of the residents she met in her early days with L'Arche continue to live and share their lives together.

Community leader Hugh Campkin said: "Lois is definitely the longest serving member of our community.

"She has been a fundraising, an employed member and a friend and a passionate advocate.

"THe work and support she has given is invaluable. Many people here, with and without disabilities, will call her a friend."

Lois was born in Montreal, Canada, in 1932 and spent much of her working life as a secretary for the Canadian government. She worked in Russia for many years.

She married Walter Brown in 1972 and lived in Milton Keynes until he died eight years later. She travelled and searched for her calling which took her to one of L'Arche's bases in Bognor Regis - Jericho in Hawthorn Road - in January, 1986. She lived and worked there for four years and now lives in almshouses in Chichester. Lois phones Jericho most days and visits about once a fortnight to maintain her links.

Last Friday, all the shoppers were out in the brisk air after Storm Doris. A small funfair ride outside Santander for the kids completed the scene.

Alas, once again, it's back to normal as a 20-something runs into a little boy, gets back on his cycle and rides on - note that no-one dare complain to him.

Five minutes later, I am near Boots the Chemist when an elderly man nonchalantly passes me by out of nowhere. I call out that there's no cycling. He responds with - get this - 'I've paid my taxes'.

Incredible.

A meter maid tells me that, if she was here, then she wouldn't be able to any other place. I presume she meant the traffic.

I'm tempted to head back toward the mini-carousel and just get on and not pay and say that it's because I want to. But there are no free rides.

THis is a year in, year out occurrence...letters such as these; the cycling through the precinct before 5pm is daily and often at speed.

Personally, I would impose an on the spot fine of between 30 clips around the ear through £10 in monetary forfeit to loss of cycle, but there are no enforcers.

What is to be done? I am a person not a skittle. Maybe the reader will recall this the next time they're out shopping or attempting to leisurely walk in the sunshine in the shopping/ cycling precinct of Bognor Regis town.

FIREFIGHTERS in Bognor Regis are set to show off their sponge-squeezing skills in aid of charity.

THe fire crews at the town's fire station in West Meads Drive will be getting out their chamois leathers from 10am3pm on April 1 to raise money for THe Fire Fighters Charity.

THey are hoping to add an extra sparkle to as many cars as possible in exchange for a donation to the good cause.

A West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "If your motor needs

some TLC, then bring it down to one of the stations, relax with a cup of tea while firefighters get it looking as good as new.

"We hope to see many people there on the day and hope to raise a lot of money for a charity very close to our hearts."

THe Fire Fighters Charity supports more than 5,000 beneficiaries a year and provides treatment, physical or psychological, to firefighters who witness the devastating effects that serious incidents can have.

Re: Horse riders warned over 'death trap' (February 17), well, I remember Pagham as it used to be.

I used to go to Pagham Riding Stables and ride with Mrs Potter, 1947-48. My parents bought my first pony there - Jack Rabbit!

Although we actually lived outside the area, I did the riding tour with Mrs Potter, I think in April, 1948.

I joined the party of horses and riders at THe Royal Oak, Lagness, and Jack Rabbit, my pony.

It was fine April weather and we rode to Singleton first THe Drove Hotel -the next day to Midhurst, then Petersfield for two nights, then back to Singleton and eventually it was Pagham.

We hardly saw a car in three days! It was an experience never forgotten.

I had my pony for many years and he actually travelled from Midhurst Station by train to Seaton Junction in Devon where I went to boarding school and some of us took our ponies.

Pagham as it was! THe riding school I think is now Tudor Close. THe days after the war were good, happy days and so much safer in many ways than today.

No - Pagham cannot be destroyed by building. Let's face it, the Romans carried their tools, materials etc across local fields and built the cathedral. Who knows what lies beneath?

Clowns from around the world invaded town Fun activities ensured plenty of enjoyment for all ages THIS week I thought we would take a different look at the history of Bognor Regis. Do you remember the annual Clowns’ Convention?

It was one of the most popular and colourful events that have occurred in the town. THe first International Clown Convention was held on April 20 and 21, 1985.

It was planned for early in the year, before the main season, so that as many of the professional clowns as possible would be available for the festivities. THe Clowns’ International organisation, which was the main organiser, is the oldest established clown organisation in the world and was founded in 1945 in London. Annually, it had a reunion with a church service and eventually these reunions moved to the Holy Trinity Church in Dalston, London, in 1959. It was not until 1967 that the clowns were allowed to attend these services in their ‘full motley', or costumes.

Despite a serious fire at the Holy Trinity church in 1985 they have continued to consider this their ‘spiritual home’ and their ‘clowns' photo gallery’ is also retained at the church. THe service is known as the Joseph Grimaldi Memorial Service and was held originally at James Church, Islington, where Joseph Grimaldi was buried. Joseph first

appeared in 1805 and was known as 'Joey' and was considered to be the father of clowning.

Although the church has been demolished, the graveyard is now a colourful memorial garden. It is also mentioned that Joseph Grimaldi had an outfit that was made from a blanket with tin plates for buttons and was a great performer in pantomimes.

THe plan for our Clowns' Convention was that the town would be ‘invaded by clowns from around the world and it would also be possible for everyone in the town to join in with the festivities.

Everyone was invited to take part, dress as a clown or just wear a red nose. Local traders were also invited to produce interesting window displays. I am sure that everyone who was in the town at the time has their own particular memory. Each year there were special events to attract everyone, but the general format consisted of Friday shows around the town and an evening event for the clowns on the Friday evening. Saturday was the main day, with a procession through the town, which included children from nursery schools through to residents from local retirement homes.

‘clowns for the weekend’ in entertaining the general public. On Saturday evening, there would be a gala show in the big top marquee.

A service would take place on the Sunday morning, either at South Bersted church or in a marquee, on the car park behind the Regis Centre, where a complete service was conducted by clowns in ‘slapstick’ while still providing the message of God. THis was usually followed by the photo call, where as many people as possible would endeavour to join in the main professional group photos, taken on the Place St Maur, which would then be seen worldwide. THe timetable stayed unchanged until the final convention in 1994.

However, how can you best describe the excitement, enjoyment, festivities and general frivolities that occurred throughout the town?

THere were clowns in shops, in hospital, in church, in school and in the High Street.

THere were clowns ‘fishing’ at drains in the street, others providing spontaneous shows wherever there was a group of people. Even on the years that rain arrived, it did not under any circumstances dampen the festivities.

THere were special celebrities at some of the events, including comedian Ron Moody, who was the Honorary Life President of Clowns’ International. Jeremy Beadle, the television personality, arrived and joined in with the circus events as well as walking around talking to people, clowns and children.

Each year there would be a number of people who would arrive in the town with their wares to sell - wooden badges, plaques and the like in the shape of clowns and mugs, shoes and clothing either for or depicting clowns.

Local cake decorators would produce a cake

complete with the clown logo for that year.

As far as photographers were concerned, they arrived along with the radio and television companies from worldwide destinations. In 1994 there was a film crew from France in the town for the whole weekend. THey filmed five local people from their home, as they were getting ready on the first morning through to the final event. THis was then produced as a 60-minute programme on French television called Clown Town.

More recently, there was a three-day clowns' convention held at Butlin’s, usually early to mid-March, with a grand parade through the town centre at 2pm on the Sunday, with music, tricks, fun and family activities.

Since 2006, the annual clown event had been held and organised by the town council, Clowns' International and Butlin’s. THis finally ended as Butlin’s ceased their circus weekends. Butlin’s had provided free board and lodgings for the clowns along with space for workshops and meetings at its resort.

Last year saw the clowns return - this time to Hotham Park and they will be back again in May. THe early conventions cost thousands of pounds to stage. THe town's local shops and companies also had the money to support this event with sponsorship or the dressing of their shop windows. Sadly, that is not the case now. I believe we had the very best time for clowns in the town; some of those young clowns have gone on to International fame, which has been good to watch. THe older clowns, of course, have stopped for health reasons. However, the International Clowns' Convention in its heyday was extraordinary, so enjoy the pictures.

Lee leads the way for large Tone Zone crew in Brighton Half race BOGNOR Tone Zone's Peter Lee led the way as more than 30 runners from the club completed the Brighton Half Marathon this weekend.

More than 8,000 people took part in the 13-mile race as wet and windy conditions battered those navigating the seafront course.

Despite the stormy conditions, Lee ran a flawless race and achieved a personal best time of 1 hour 19 minutes (1.19) to place him 68th overall. Also running her best time for the distance was Anne Kari Enes, who crossed the finishing line in 1.36.

Duncan Stephenson-Gill and Colin Hiscock, both ran three minutes better than previously to finish in 1.30 and 1.31 respectively.

Continuing the impressive tally of PBs were Andy Miles (1.44), Carl Bryant (1.45), Peter Ramsdale (1.49) and Nathalie Omahony (2.08).

Sunday was a busy day for club members with a series of races across the region.

At the Goring 10k, Simon Gill took an excellent third in 34.42. It was a very close race, with Gill finishing just four seconds behind the second-placed runner.

Also this weekend, Sy Daymond took a

trip to THorpe Park - but it wasn't for the roller coasters. Instead it was another half marathon. Sy ran well to finish in a personal best of 1.27, taking over six minutes from his former best time.

Over in Hampshire, and Sunday saw the Heartbreaker half and marathon take place at Fordingbridge, in THe New Forest.

Paul Coe used the event as training for his South Downs 50 mile race in six weeks by uncharacteristically walking the hills.

Despite this, he still finished in 4.14 alongside Simon Bodsworth.

Laura Newell and Carole Parncutt raced the half marathon at the same event and crossed the line in 2.03 and 2.50 respectively.

On Saturday, Amberley Museum and Heritage Centre staged the Maverick Run series, a challenging multi-distance event of 4.3, eight and 14.3 mile routes around the surrounding hills towards Findon.

Grace Natoli and Sarah Baker competed in the longest race and finished in 2.44 and 2.57.

Peter Chittenden finished the shorter distance in 1.44. He also ran in the Rowands 10k on Sunday in 1.50 to complete a good weekend for the popular veteran runner.

PostSport THE BOGNOR Friday Night Benevolent League is coming to a close - and the first of the end of season knockouts saw the captains and secretaries square up at the Newtown Social Club.

THe captains' knockout saw 13 players take part out of a maximum of 20. Ultimately, two players were left Stuart Gray (POW Galleon) and James Riggs (Friary 'D').

In the final, Gray won the bullseye to start the final, but a slow start let Riggs get into the groove with a 140.

A few big scores helped him leave a finish, but Riggs started missing. Gray caught up, and also started missing his doubles, but eventually hit double two to take the leg.

THe second leg saw Riggs hit the bigger scores again, and finally leave a double. Gray then hit a 140 to leave himself a double.

Riggs missed, giving Gray a chance at double 14, which he hit with the first dart to take the leg and a 2-0 win for the Benevolent Captains title.

THe secretaries' knockout came down to Gary Blackwood (BRSA Wanderers) facing off against Lee Franklin (POW 'Z').

Franklin hit the bullseye to start the final, and he started with a ton.

Blackwood only hit 40 after a bounceout in his first throw, but his next three throws were 140, 100 and a maximum 180, leaving him a finish.

Franklin hit 121 to have a chance but could only leave double top, giving Blackwood another chance which he took, taking the leg in 17 darts.

Blackwood started the second leg with a 140 and also scored 128 and 100.

Franklin wasn't far behind with scores of 125, 83 and 120.

Both players then proceeded to miss a few doubles, but it was Blackwood who eventually hit the double he required, taking the win 2-0 and the Benevolent Secretaries title.

ANYONE thinking that bowls is a summer sport, forget about it.

Say hello to Short Mat Bowls, the game which allows competitors to dust down their woods and roll up during winter.

All eyes this weekend were on Donnington Short Mat Bowls Club as the village just outside Chichester played host to the annual Spoon Drive.

Forget bowls and cups - there was only items of kitchenware that those taking part wanted to lift at the end of the day: the champion spoon, which was awarded to the best individual bowler on the day.

Competition was fierce inside Donnington Village Hall.

After a number of hours, the winner was declared - with Colin Dean lifting the glamorous trophy.

THe runner-up was Chris White, who won a spoon rest.

Organisers, who embraced the laid-back nature of the event, said that Chris hoped to

win a spoon for his spoon rest at next year's competition.

After another successful Spoon Drive, Janine Bartlett, from the club, said: "All the bowlers had an enjoyable time competing for this coveted trophy.

"THe cake was good, too."

Short mat bowls is an indoor sport which is a modern variation on lawn bowls.

Players attempt to score points by rolling a heavy ball along a fairly flat surface.

THe aim is to get their bowls nearer to the jack than their opponents, and so outscore them.

It originated in Ireland in the mid-1940s and now more than 25,000 people across the UK play the sport.

It is seen as an all-weather alternative to the more seasonal outdoor version of the game.

Robins sit eight clear at the top as Sidlesham lose away

BOSHAM can take another big step towards the SCFL Division Two title tomorrow as they welcome struggling Alfold to Walton Lane (3pm).

THe Robins have been in fine form all year, losing just once in the league all season.

But two cup defeats in successive weeks sparked fears that Andy Probee's side could let rivals Sidlesham sneak in to win the title.

Such thoughts were comfortably dispatched on Saturday when the Robins defeated Worthing Town Leisure 4-0 at home, thanks to goals from Louis Bell, Graeme Dowden, Marco Giambelardini and Bradley Miles.

THat win, combined with Sidlesham slipping up on the road at Lancing United, means the Robins sit eight points clear at the top with just seven games to go.

THe Sids on the other hand have slipped to third, nine points behind Bosham.

Two Tom Bayley goals were not enough to rescue Daren Pearce's side from a 3-2 defeat at Lancing on Saturday.

THe Sids have a chance to get back to winning ways tomorrow when they make the long trip to Westfield (3pm).

Chi 'not ready' for promotion Morey fires Blues to five in row Ne

CHICHESTER City boss Miles Rutherford has said the club is not ready for the Ryman League - even if the Oaklands Park side had applied for promotion this season.

THe Lillywhites have been in sparkling form all season, sitting third in the SCFL Premier.

But Chi's title credentials took a blow on Saturday when they lost 3-0 at home to league leaders Shoreham. THat defeat was the first in 22 games for Rutherford's side and leaves them five points off the pace.

Speaking to the Post after the match, Rutherford said: "We weren't very good on the day.

"As a side we were very poor, probably the poorest we have been for a log time.

"I think the occasion got to a number of the players and as a colective we just didn't turn up. Shoreham were much the better side. It was men against boys."

Chi will be looking to bounce back tomorrow when they make the trip to Horsham to play Broadbridge Heath (3pm).

With ten games left, Rutherford has still not given

up hope that his side will be lifting the league trophy at the end of the season.

He said: "From now to the end of the season will win try to win every game we can.

"It has shocked us how well we have done. From what we get financially compared to others we are over-achieveing.

"THat's a great credit to the players we have. I can accept them having a couple of bad games."

Bad games is something Chi can not afford to have from now until the end of the season.

Shoreham and Haywards Heath in second have not dropped many points all year.

If Chi do manage to overhaul them though, promotion to the Ryman South will not happen as the club has not completed the paperwork.

Rutherford said: "It was a mistake by the chairman, he has admitted that and at the time of the application there were lots of issues going on internally "I don't think we are ready to go up. But next year we hope to get things right on and off the pitch "

But Pagham have rallied. Last weekend saw the Lions secure a 3-1 win away at Lancing, thanks to goals from Callum Overton, Ryan Cox and Matthew Ryan.

THen Bennett's side beat SCFL Division One side Langney Wanderers 8-0 in the semifinal of the league cup.

THat sets up a final on May 1 at Hassocks with Broadbridge Heath or Haywards Heath.

Shea said: "After the Arundel defeat [a fortnight ago] we had a clear-the-air meeting.

"During the course of that, players decided they wanted to move on. I don't want players at the club who do not want to be there so they were told they could leave straght away.

"THere's never been a time this year I have even considered changing Mark as manager.

In fact, I'm in negotiations to make sure he is here next year and beyond.

"I feel like we have turned the corner now and the job for rest of the season to finish as high as we can in the table."

Rocks' race is on as Hawks close gap at top to a point Next Game

THE TITLE race is on - and the Rocks are ready for it.

With two months and 11 games of the season to go, Bognor continue to sit top of the Ryman Premier.

But hot on their tails are big-spending Havant and Waterlooville, who have narrowed the gap to just one point in recent weeks.

With many twists and turns to come, Bognor boss Jamie Howell is urging his side to concentrate on winning their own games - starting tomorrow at home to Leatherhead (3pm).

Speaking to THe Post, he said: "THe gap does and doesn't affect us. It's nice sometimes to have a cushion and sometimes that helps as you can relax going into games.

"But Havant were always going to have games in hand and they will win games.

"We just need to worry about ourselves. If we don't win our games, then someone else will overtake us. We need to give ourselves the best chance to finish as high as we possibly can."

Howell's Rocks go into the match against Leatherhead off the back of two tough away league matches.

A win away at Wingate & Finchley was followed up on Saturday with a 2-2 draw at third-placed Needham Market.

Gary Charman and Sami El-Abd put the Rocks ahead twice at Bloomfields only for the

Marketmen to come back.

Howell said that on reflection he was "happy with the performance and happy with the result".

He said: "THey've been up there all season and away from home a draw is a good result.

"We had a little bit of ascendency in the second half but, apart from a chance for Ollie Pearce, I'm not sure we did enough to score as we didn't really create enough."

THe issue of goals is one that Rocks fans may be talking about. Of the last 12 scored, ten have been from open play.

Howell said: "Sometimes it just goes like that. We have had quite a few tricky matches away from home, the pitches are not too great at the moment and when it's like that you have to try and grind out a result."

Fourth bottom Leatherhead make the trip to Nyewood in poor form, winning just once in two months.

But Howell has warned his side against complacency against Jimmy Bullard's side.

He said: "Grays proved a couple of weeks ago there are no easy games.

"We have not been great at home recently and we need to rectify that and get a win.

"Leatherhead were very good at their place.

THey play good football and it was hard to get the ball off them.

"But we're at home, we have a good pitch and that gives us a platform to get a win."

Howell praises flexible squad BOGNOR boss Jamie Howell knows what he wants from his talented Rocks squad - even if it means some players have to play out of their comfort zone.

Over recent years, the Rocks boss and his assistant Darin Kilpatrick have built an excellent squad.

While it is by far from the biggest in the Ryman Premier league, it is one of the most flexible - and that means the opposition are never entirely sure what to expect from the Nyewood Lane side.

Recent weeks have seen players in and out of the starting 11 and in various positions around the pitch, as Howell looks for the combinations to fire the Rocks into the National League South.

Jamie Howell said: "You need adaptability in your squad.

"Depending on who you are facing, some games you need people to do a role for you and that means you need a flexible squad.

"We're lucky to have good players at the club and good players can play anywhere which means they can adapt."

THat trend is set to continue tomorrow against Leatherhead for Howell with Dan Beck (flu) and Alex Parsons (foot) both back.

I AM writing this a few days after our trip to Needham Market after getting a 2-2 draw.

On reflection, I feel like we deserved more from the game.

After taking the lead twice, they were clinical and pegged us back twice.

But as the match wore on, we were the ones who were pressing, we were the ones creating chances. Even though they were at home and are sitting third, they should have been pushing for the win, but that was what we were doing.

THere was some real frustration that even though we did create chances we could not get the winner THey were only in our half twice and they scored on both occasions and those two mistakes cost us.

But in the grand scheme of things, if you look at the Wingate and Needham matches, four points from two tough away trips is a good return.

In terms of my own play, it's good to be back in the starting 11.

Against Dulwich I was on the bench and Jamie brought me on to play in centre midfield, telling me to get in the box as much as I could.

Against Wingate, I was on the right of midfield and then for Crawley and Needham it was back to left back THe two games I have played more advanced I think it made a difference as we looked a lot more threatening in open play.

Considering only two of the last 12 goals we have scored have not been from set pieces, that is important.

At the moment, we need four or five good chances in open play to get a goal.

To win the league we need to be doing better than that.

Needham did that on Saturday and that's why we drew the game.

Some people are surprised that I can change positions so easily but I have always played a versatile role at the club - whether it be at full back, centre half, left midfield or up front. THe main thing I have to do is to try to focus on the role I've been asked to do.

Having played most of the

last six months at full back, I'm used to having the play in front of me.

When you are in midfield you just need to be aware that it will be a little different.

One thing that is certain though is that we will have a challenging match at home to Leatherhead tomorrow.

At this stage of the season there are no easy fixtures as everyone is needing points wherever they are.

I think there's also something in the English makeup as a nation, where we enjoy scuppering other people's intentions - and no doubt Leatherhead will want to come and spoil our plans.

THere will be a familiar face in their dugout in former England international Jimmy Bullard.

When we played them away earlier in the season it was a little surreal walking out and seeing him there on the sidelines.

I had that feeling more when I played against Harlow, featuring Ibrahima Sanko, because I used to watch him at Reading. Likewise, when I used to line up opposite Glenn Little.

But when you're in the game, you don't think about who you're playing.

Maybe it's because I'm getting a little older.

After Leatherhead, we are on the road to Leiston, who are in the promotion hunt.

Looking at the table, they are currently 14 points behind and with four games in hand.

I'm not sure they have a big enough squad to cope. But Havant, who are two points behind us, do and their next three games are massive.

If they walk out of those with six or nine points, then will be favourites. If they lose a couple, then they'll be thinking 'Oh dear'.

In comparison, there's no pressure on us at all.

No-one expects us to be there given the resources that we have; while everyone knows that Havant have got 18 players who are all fit and have played at a higher level.

Even though we are top, in terms of pressure we do not feel Havant. We know that all the pressure is on them.
