The Queen's visit was the first to the theatre in more than 50 years and included a performance by Chichester

Festival Youth Theatre of a scene from its forthcoming Christmas production, Beauty and the Beast, whose songs include Be Our Guest. The performers included Funmi Ajayi, 13, as Poppy. She said: "I was really excited and nervous about performing for the Queen. I also got to present the Queen with a posy outside the Minerva Theatre. I was so nervous and I didn't want to mess up what I was going to say.

"But it was so exciting getting to speak to the monarch." Evie Carter, 15, also appeared as a compere, narrator and singer of the last song. She said: "It was so amazing to perform in front of the Queen. We were waiting backstage to go on and all feeling very nervous. I actually felt so sick." The Queen was greeted as she arrived at the theatre in the late morning by hundreds of excited residents of all ages.

Children held flowers and cards for Her Majesty as she walked past. Vicky Roe Dos Santos, of Chichester, watched with her children, Jonathan, six, and Sophia, four. Vicky said: "As the Queen came by, I called out 'Your Majesty' and she came over to us. My children had posies for her and she took them and said: 'Nice day for it' as she went. It's absolutely made our day. It's fantastic." Turn to pages 4 & 5
