Time to get the A27 moving

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk THE MP for Chichester has said she believes there is a strong case for getting funding to improve the A27 around Chichester in the next round of funding.

As reported in The Chichester Post, both Chichester District Council and West Sussex County Council have agreed that

the best solution for fixing the heavily congested road is to wait for the next round of Roads Investment Strategy (RIS) funding, provided by Highways England.

THat runs between the years 2020 and 2025.

THat's instead of choosing any of the five options suggested by Highways England, as many people felt none of them would work.

We treat people how we ourselves would wish to be treated, with respect, dignity and above all with compassion.

Gillian Keegan has become heavily involved in the plans over the last few months since being elected in June.

Now, she said it's vital that together the community comes up with a solution that will work within the budget.

She said: "I am in an ongoing dialogue with the Secretary of State and Highways England together with West Sussex County Council to ensure we are in the best position to secure funding in RIS2.

"Each submission for RIS2 will be judged on its merit and I think we have a strong case.

"However a successful outcome is not guaranteed as we all know.

"To increase the likelihood of securing funding we will need to have an agreed solution that is deliverable within the budget."

STUDENTS and staff at a Westergate school are celebrating after education watchdogs praised its work.

THe Ofsted inspector said the Ormiston Six Villages Academy had made a rapid improvement and swift and decisive action had been taken to lead to good and improving outcomes for students across the school.

THe overall 'Good' rating, which was repeated in every category, came just 20 months after the academy was deemed to be 'Inadequate'.

But dedicated principal Umbar Sharif has transformed the work which is carried out at the Lime Avenue site.

She joined just days before the previous inspection in January 2016 and her relentless hard work was noted by inspectors in the latest report for addressing key areas for improvement.

Ms Sharif said: "THe report is testament to the hard work and belief of our fantastic staff, the commitment and support of parents, the unfailing support of our sponsor, Ormiston Academies Trust, and the encouragement of the interim executive board.

"I would also like to thank our student body, who are the epitome of excellence and have risen to meet the high expectations that we have set for them.

"We will continue to work hard to raise their aspirations and to provide them with the high standard of education they deserve."

THe latest inspection, which was published last week, took place on two days in the middle of last month. It was led by Paula Sargent.

She said: "Leaders are ambitious for the

school and its pupils. THey have created a positive and warm environment for learning.

"Higher expectations have helped pupils to make faster progress.

"Teachers know their pupils well. THey increasingly use questioning skilfully in lessons to develop pupils' knowledge, skills and understanding further."

THe work has seen results for Year 11 students improve year-on-year and an emphasis on better writing skills.

More than 40 lunchtime and afterschool groups are offered to earn praise from the inspectors for developing the wider skills of the school's 500 students.

Ms Sharif joined the school as part of the government's talented leaders initiative.

THis matches exceptional headteachers with schools in the UK. She and her team have been supported by an interim executive board, established to ensure the governance of the academy and to help to drive improvement.

Interim board member Ken Lloyd said: "THe governance board is absolutely delighted that the time and energy invested by so many people has led to this well-deserved rating.

"THis is an academy that is really going places."

THe backing of the Ormiston Academies Trust also earned praise from Ofsted.

THe trust's interim chief executive, Nick Hudson, said he was delighted to see the hard work and dedication at the academy recognised.

THe inspectors gave two ways in which standards could be improved further.

THese were to challenge pupils harder and give better advice to them.

Residents at city care home enjoy harvest festival service A SPECIAL harvest festival took place at a city care home.

Marriott House and Lodge Care Home in Chichester hosted a special harvest festival service with the help of Cedar Ministry.

Cedar Ministry is a team from Chichester Baptist Church who visit local care homes in the Chichester area. THey held their monthly service, which included a harvest festival theme.

THe home welcomed residents, relatives, staff and members of the local community as part of its harvest festival celebrations.

In the lead up to the day, the home collected donations of non-perishable

foods which were delivered to the local food bank by the Cedar Ministry Group after the service.

Sarah Harding, head of activities, said: “Staff, residents and their families were really keen to offer as much support as possible by donating items and joining us on the day.

"It was lovely to see so many people joining us for the service and we now hope to make this an annual event.”

Harvest festival is an annual celebration to mark the end of the main harvest season, and a time to give thanks for the crop that has been grown.

Cedar Ministry started visiting the home back in 2012.

Stop hedges overgrowing

Spooky activities keep kids entertained this half-term

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk CHILDREN have been taking part in spooky activities this half-term at Flip Out Chichester.

A variety of activities have been organised at the popular holiday club, including carving pumpkins, dressing up as mummies and making pizzas - which the youngsters then enjoyed for lunch.

THere was also a disco where children dressed up and took part in a pumpkin parade.

Marketing manager Kelly Gilbert said: "Kids have been coming in for a single day or for the whole week. THey have been taking part in various activities.

"We get such a buzz from seeing all the kids and their families having such a

good time.

"We love the fact that there's an activity that parents can do with their children.

It's been fantastic.

"Some of the kids have said that it's the best club that they have ever been to."

Children also took part in a spooky colouring competition for the chance to win a special prize.

And of course, youngsters enjoyed bouncing on the many trampolines at the centre.

"THey burn loads of energy and have a great time," Kelly added.

"It's especially great for bad weather days as well - and it gets them off the sofa!"

HOMEOWNERS are being asked to prevent their hedges and trees becoming problems on the roads and pavements next to their properties.

With bird nesting season over, highways officers are urging people to see if they need to trim back overhanging vegetation now, rather than wait for an official reminder to arrive in the post.

Cllr Bob Lanzer, West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said: “Overhanging hedges and other vegetation can cause various problems, including obscuring road users’ views of potential dangers, and obstructing pavements for all, including people using disability buggies and parents pushing prams.

“Another, increasing problem we have found is buses and other commercial vehicles colliding with overgrown trees and low-hanging branches.

“Nobody wants to write to people, reminding them of their legal responsibilities, so I would urge homeowners to look at their property boundaries now and, if necessary, take action to prevent hedges and other vegetation obstructing adjacent roads and pavements.”

THe owner or occupier of a property is legally responsible for ensuring adjacent roads and pavements are not obstructed by vegetation.

Hospice week is a success LOCAL timber and builders merchants, Covers, has given St Wilfrid's Hospice a financial boost.

THe firm held its third Help for Hospices Week last month and surpassed its aim of raising £30,000 for 11 local hospices, including St. Wilfrid’s.

THroughout the week, events were held by Covers Depots and partner Hospices.

To get the week off to a mouthwateringly good start, all depots took part in the Great Builders Bake Off. Volunteers from St Wilfrid’s joined Covers staff at the Chichester depot to sell an array of homemade cakes and biscuits.

Fundraising continued with the sale of bacon rolls. THroughout the week, Covers donated £5 for each registered customer who made a purchase in their stores, and raffle tickets were on sale.

Covers chairman Rupert Green said “We’re delighted to have raised so much for this important cause, and I thank all our customers, staff and hospice representatives who helped make this achievement possible.”

Alisa Lakeman-Ford, from the fundraising department at St Wilfrid’s, helped co-ordinate the event.

She added: "We are tremendously grateful for the time, energy and money committed by Covers to help us provide our vital services and make such a difference to the lives of local people.”

Police appeal to hand in weapons PEOPLE in possession of unwanted guns or ammunition are being encouraged to hand them in as part of a campaign to make Sussex and Surrey a safer place.

Many firearms are held in innocence and ignorance of their illegality, or are overlooked and forgotten in people’s homes.

Others are acquired and distributed by criminal networks to harm, threaten and intimidate their local communities.

THe new appeal gives people the chance to dispose of firearms or ammunition by handing them in at their local police station without repercussion.

THe surrender, which runs from Monday, November 13, to Sunday, November 26, forms part of a national campaign by the National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS).

THe aim of the operation, supported

by Sussex and Surrey Police, is to reduce the number of illegally held firearms in circulation which could fall into the hands of criminals. THis includes replica firearms, air weapons, BB guns, imitation firearms, antique guns, component parts and other ballistic items.

Sussex Police Det Chief Insp Steve Rayland said: “If you have any guns or ammunition you no longer want, or if you don’t know what to do with them or how to safely dispose of them, we can help.

“We recognise that firearms or replica weapons in the wrong hands can assist in the commission of serious offences, can increase community fears, can result in a significant drain on police resources responding to incidents, and can

present a potential risk to armed officers confronting an individual in possession of a weapon they believe to be real.

“While crimes involving firearms in both Sussex and Surrey are extremely rare, we understand that every weapon poses a potential threat if not licensed and stored safely. THat’s why we’re offering people this opportunity to safely hand in their unwanted weapons.

“During the surrender we want people to hand in illegally-held guns and ammunition, imitation firearms and air guns used for criminal purposes, other unwanted guns and ammunition including air guns and imitations, and firearms you are being asked to hide for someone else."

During the two-week campaign, those surrendering firearms will not face prosecution for the illegal possession upon surrender, and can remain anonymous.

Det Chief Insp Rayland added: “I’d like to clarify that this is a firearms surrender and not a general firearms amnesty for the lifetime of the firearm; an amnesty will be granted for police possession of an item only at the point of handover (surrender).

“THe fight against gun crime is stronger than ever, and we are working with partners and our local communities to safeguard, educate and intervene at the earliest opportunity.

"We take all reports of incidents involving firearms extremely seriously, and robust action will be taken against anyone who commits a firearms related offence.”

Time to celebrate as students graduate from city's college THE hard work of more than 30 Chichester College graduates has been celebrated.

THe special ceremony, held at the college, recognised the efforts and achievements of students who have completed various professional business courses – many of whom have been studying while working full-time.

Guys and ghouls have spinechilling fun for Hallowe'en

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk SPOOKY fun was on offer at the Weald and Downland Museum over half-term week.

A whole host of Hallowe'en activities were taking place for visitors to enjoy during the week, including pumpkin carving, Hallowe'en crafts, face painting, conker games and spine-tingling stories.

Vicky THompson, from Bognor Regis,

went to the museum with her four children, Zack, eight, Annabel, seven, and Rileigh and Jess, both six, pictured below.

She said: "It's been really brilliant. THe kids just haven't stopped. It's absolutely great value for money.

"We come here during the summer holidays as well and there is always loads to do.

"I saw that the Hallowe'en bits were on and the kids could dress up and have fun so we came along.

"My bags are full of the crafts they have made. THere is still loads to do which is great. THey get the chance to run about and burn off their energy."

Zack added: "My favourite thing has been the face painting. We've also made some cobwebs and finger puppets."

Craft activities in one of the buildings included creating ghost finger puppets, weaving cobwebs, creating vampire bats, making dancing paper skeletons and drawing moving scenes.

Rachael Milan, from Hertfordshire, was visiting the area during half-term.

She took her two children, ten-year-old Edie and Poppy, nine.

Rachael said: "We've had a lovely day so far. We've spent the morning looking around the building and in the school.

"We have a house in the Witterings so we often visit here once or twice a year.

THe activities in half-term are always brilliant here."

Edie added: "We went inside the school and we did the building things. I think my favourite thing was building a bridge.

"I am looking forward to Hallowe'en now as we go trick or treating."

THe museum's timetable of events also included a pumpkin trail, woodland play trail, historic clothing displays and construction at the bakehouse and dairy.

Staff prevent fraud crime ALERT jewellers' shop staff have prevented a Chichester man from becoming a courier fraud victim.

On THursday, October 19, an 81-year-old Chichester resident received a phone call from a ‘DC Campbell from the Serious Fraud Squad, Hammersmith’ stating that the man’s debit card had been duplicated and asking how much money was in his account.

He was directed to visit a jeweller's in Chichester to purchase a watch worth about £28,000 to prevent the money being taken from the account, and, if asked, he was told to say it was for his grandson.

Luckily, the shop staff refused his request as they realised it was a fraud. THe next day, the man received another call from 'DC Campbell'. He was told to visit a jeweller's in Horsham to purchase another watch, this time worth £27,000. THe man took a taxi to Horsham where again staff were suspicious, and called police.

PC Bernadette Lawrie, Sussex Police financial abuse safeguarding officer, said: "Please remember to protect yourself against courier fraud.

"It is good that shop and bank staff are increasingly recognising the telltale signs of this type of fraudulent activity and are blocking purchases and contacting the police.

"But everyone, especially the elderly and those who live alone, must remain on the alert for approaches like this."

SIXTH FORM OPEN EVENING Thursday 9th November 2017 Celebrations for all as top care home provider marks its 25th anniversary FOLKS at Westergate House Care Home in Fontwell have been celebrating the 25th anniversary of Barchester Healthcare.

Westergate House, a Barchester care home, got into the spirit of the celebrations with Carousel THeatre Group performing ‘Radio Days’ as well as live sing-a-long entertainers which were enjoyed by residents, staff and visitors alike.

Barchester Healthcare was founded in 1992

by Mike Parsons after discovering from his own personal experience just how difficult it was to find a good quality care home for two relatives

in need of nursing care.

With aims to create a better alternative, he bought Moreton Hill, a 17th century farm that he then went on to convert into a unique care home.

Now, Barchester cares for more than 10,000 residents across the country.

Meanwhile, a campaign group has given its support to the local authorities bidding to find a solution to the A27 crisis.

Chris Page is from Best4Chichester. He said local authorities now need to act fast to find a solution that the community is happy with, to put to Highways England.

He said: "I think it was the right thing to do not to accept one of the totally unsuitable options that were presented last year.

"I believe it would be money wasted.

We are led to believe that if we can come up with some community solution by next Easter then we will be in line for funding in RIS2.

"THat would mean that work would start in 2023.

"Work was probably not going to start on the first round until at least 2019, probably 2020 anyway. So it's worth a delay of three years to get a better solution."

And Mr Page said he believes this will provide the best option for the people of Chichester.

"I believe it has more chance of coming up with a solution that will be acceptable

to all of the community than if we leave it with Highways England.

"Highways England have already demonstrated that they can't come up with any proper solution to the traffic problems."

Meanwhile,councillor Tony Dignum, leader of Chichester City Council, also followed in the footsteps of West Sussex County Council and wrote a letter to Highways England's Chief Executive Jim O'Sullivan.

He spoke of the importance of the county and district councils working together.

In the letter, he said: "THe council now looks forward to engaging further in the local community work and, as suggested in the letter from the county council, working with the support of Highways England to produce a scheme that best serves the needs of strategic highway users and also has broad local community support."

THe last Build a Better A27 meeting saw the majority of the community agree with plans to wait until the next round of funding.

Museum gets financial boost from the Heritage Lottery Fund THE Novium Museum has received £8,300 in grant funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting project.

‘Cutlasses & Contraband’ will focus on sharing known and unknown stories of smugglers, and the punishments they received, in and around the Chichester district and the Sussex coast.

THe HLF funding, thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, will enable a programme of events to run alongside THe Novium Museum’s new exhibition – ‘Cutlasses & Contraband; A Smuggler’s Tale’, which launches on THursday, November 16.

Activities will include a series of 10 ‘Smuggling Saturday’ family activity days, where families will be able to drop in to the museum and take part in crafts, interactive storytelling and talks, all free of charge, and two evening talks on Smuggling in Sussex.

THe funding will help to upskill staff and volunteers to enable guided

tours of the exhibition, as well as the development of three new school workshops, aimed at Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 children.

THe prizes for THe Novium’s annual schools’ writing competition will also be funded by the grant, allowing the museum to offer the prize, a Smugglers-themed class sleepover, to five lucky winners.

Cllr Eileen Lintill, cabinet member for community services at Chichester District Council, said: “We are thrilled to have received support thanks to National Lottery players.

"THe events funded by the grant will offer something for everyone, and the focus on training and upskilling will enable the team at THe Novium Museum to really engage the public with the history of local smuggling.”

THe interactive exhibition will tell local smuggling stories, including that of the infamous Hawkhurst Gang, who were sentenced to death in Chichester’s Guildhall in Priory Park.

Charity night LOCAL cancer charity CancerWise is organising a fun family fundraising evening.

It takes place on Saturday, November 11, at Boxgrove Village Hall.

Pregnant women reminded of importance of free flu jab

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk PREGNANT women are being reminded about the importance of receiving their flu vaccination to help protect themselves and their unborn babies.

Last year, only 44.9 per cent of pregnant women in the UK had their flu jab and although this was up from the 42.3 per cent of the previous year, it still is not high enough, with 55.1 per cent remaining unprotected.

It is necessary because pregnant women are particularly at risk from seasonal flu. Full protection from the vaccine takes up to two weeks to develop and people are being advised to act now to protect themselves.

Dr Mark Lythgoe, GP and clinical director at Horsham and Mid Sussex Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Most people know that flu can cause serious illness in pregnant women and in the most severe cases can put the lives of expectant mums and their unborn babies at risk.

"THis is because the woman’s body and immune system is adapting to accommodate the growing baby and less able to fight off the flu virus. It is so important that pregnant women get their flu jab as soon as possible to help minimise these risks and avoid flu this winter.”

THe free seasonal vaccine has been

available widely since October. Patients can receive it at their GP surgery or speak to their midwife.

Michaela Green, who is six months pregnant with her first child, received the flu jab last week.

She said: “I was offered the flu jab by my GP and there was no hesitation from me whatsoever that I was going to have it.

"I knew the risks of not having it were just not worth it and as my baby is due in February, which is the height of winter, I didn’t want to take any risks. It was really easy to make an appointment and was over in a matter of seconds."

Dr Patience Okorie, local GP and NHS Crawley CCG clinical lead for children and young people, added: “Some mothers-to-be worry about the vaccine and its safety - the flu vaccination is safe for both you and your baby and can be given at any stage of pregnancy.

"If you are pregnant and haven’t had your flu vaccination already please speak with your GP." As well as pregnant women, people with long-term conditions, carers, and those aged over 65 are able to receive a flu jab free of charge.

All other members of the public are still encouraged to get their flu jab at their local pharmacy for a small fee. Even if you are not a vulnerable person yourself, if you come into contact with someone who is, flu could cause them serious health implications.

Council gets its recognition WEST SUSSEX has been awarded Fairtrade county status by the Fairtrade Foundation, for its commitment to the trading principles.

It follows a two year campaign led by Fairtrade West Sussex, which was set up in 2009.

THe local Fairtrade Steering Group, with the support of West Sussex County Council, has achieved the five criteria necessary to be granted this award.

THe fundamental aim of Fairtrade is to change the way trade works through better prices, decent working conditions and a fair deal for farmers and workers in developing countries. It also ensures these farmers get an equal say in every trading deal.

THe council promotes a number of initiatives such as ensuring that Fairtrade tea and coffee is available in its schools and staff restaurants, together with the provision of education packs to local communities.

It also collaborates with the local Fairtrade Steering Group to promote it among local businesses, commercial

and other organisations, including shops and cafes. THe county will continue to build on its achievements and take the campaign further.

Cllr Jeremy Hunt, West Sussex County Council cabinet member for finance and resources, said: “THis is excellent news and a due reflection of the hard work put in by the Fairtrade West Sussex group.

"THe county council will continue to promote Fairtrade initiatives and products to ensure more residents are aware of Fairtrade and the benefits of it.”

Sue Joy, convenor of Fairtrade West Sussex, said: "We are delighted the Fairtrade Foundation has agreed to Fairtrade County designation.

"We look forward to working in close partnership with West Sussex County Council in the future to ensure that it is known throughout the county at every level."

HALLOWEEN fun was had by all ages at West Dean Gardens this week.

Little monsters put on brave faces and followed the spooky Halloween trail and took part in many activities starting on Wednesday.

Emsworth-based chocolatiers, Montezuma’s sponsored the Halloween event and supplied scrumptious chocolate prizes for the Halloween trail.

Children could also take part in craft activities during the five day event.

THese included; make your own Halloween hat, spooky masks, monster sticks, bats and Halloween lanterns and a visit to Dracula’s Lair.

Enjoyable sweet treats were on offer at Witches Way with deadly desserts including; cauldron cakes, putrid pudding, apple spider and ice scream.

EXPENSIVE! THat would be most people’s response when talking about the price of property in Chichester.

I like to get a little more technical than that though, so I thought I’d delve into some recent research from Zoopla that looked at the varying price per square foot of property around the country.

Here in Chichester, the average price per square foot of property is £356.

THis in itself doesn’t give away much, but when we consider that the average price per square foot of property throughout the UK is £211, we can see that Chichester is 69 per cent more expensive than the national average.

THe gap between the most expensive area in the country (London’s Kensington & Chelsea - £1,328 per square foot) and the least expensive (Blaenau Gwent in Wales - £79 per square foot) is even more staggering though.

Whole houses in Wales are literally selling for the price of a London bedroom!

It’s no surprise that prices in London have risen the most in the past five years (up 54 per cent), followed by the East of England (+38 per cent) and the South-East of England (+36 per cent).

THe North-East of England saw the lowest growth in the past five years, with average prices rising just three per cent.

Closer to home, we can see that Chichester is also more expensive than its seaside neighbour Bognor Regis, where the average price of property is ‘just’ £277 per square foot.

THis still means Bognor Regis is more expensive than the UK average, but it suggests you can get around a third more ‘bricks for your buck’ in Bognor Regis than you can in Chichester.

BID meeting MEMBERS of the Chichester BID gathered together for a meeting which took a close look at the profile of Chichester city centre and its performance.

THe meeting was attended by more than 25 BID members and partner organisations at the Oxmarket Gallery in East Street.

Sven Latham (Noggin mobile data) was able to draw a portrait of the flow of visitors through just one street and beyond into the city.

THis kind of portrait could now be reproduced for several other zones of interest.

Colin Hicks (BID chairman) spoke about positive changes in staffing and the new focus for the BID team on driving footfall and leading efforts to improve the dwell-times of visitors to the city.

He added that the BID area was funded by the businesses themselves and several members had already responded to calls for ideas to promote the city, some of which would be trialled in the Christmas period.

THe BID team enjoys an improving relationship with both public and private partners and is consulted about wider issues of importance to members. Jeanette Hockley, BID member services manager, revealed details of the 2017 Christmas campaign for Chichester.

Janet Tuckett was introduced in her new role as the members’ parttime ambassador, which involves working with BID area businesses to keep them informed about what is happening in the city and help promote their special events or promotional offers.

Willow weaving is fun craft for children at city school

A group of 60 pupils from North Mundham Primary School in North Mundham attended the special workshop organised by local social

housing provider Stonewater.

THe firm is currently building 25 muchneeded affordable homes opposite the school and village hall in the new Stoney Meadow housing development.

Under Victoria's guidance, youngsters wove a glittering constellation of fairylit stars, which will light up the school corridors this Christmas.

THe children’s workshop is tied in with Stonewater’s plans to provide the new Stoney Meadow housing community

with a public artwork that creates a sense of place in keeping with the surrounding mature hedgerows and flora and fauna.

Assistant headteacher Justin Murray said: "Each pupil was able to develop a new skill with Victoria.

"THe outcomes were fantastic, and everyone was full of pride in their work and engaged in the activity.

"Links with the community are an important part of our school ethos.

"We all had a thoroughly enjoyable day.”

Cyclists fear over safety of road design CYCLISTS have claimed changes on a busy Aldwick road are unsafe.

Bognor Cycle Forum chairman Dave Barton and member Dr Malcolm Ridley attended Aldwick Parish Council's meeting on Monday to raise their concerns about the Fish Lane scheme.

Dr Ridley said: "The design has not given consideration to the safety of cyclists. By challenging cyclists and motorised traffic together, effectively the cyclists are being used as a traffic-calming measure, thus compromising their safety.

"We would like the support of Aldwick Parish Council in persuading West Sussex County Council highways to provide a safe cut-through for cyclists at the Fish Lane pinch-point."

Mr Barton added: "Judging by the government's recommendations on the road safety audit, they should include a statement on the safety of both pedestrians and cyclists.

"Neither the road safety audit one or two have included that. We would like your support in trying to note the safety of cyclists throughout Aldwick."

In an email to Mr Barton from Simon Osbourne, project manager from West Sussex County Council, he said: "The scheme has been developed in partnership with Aldwick Parish Council

following concerns raised by residents of Fish Lane regarding driver behaviours and speeds.

"The implementation of the gateways and associated road markings are designed to highlight the change in environment from a wide open promenade to a narrow residential road and have been constructed within existing hatched sections of the carriageway.

"I fully understand your comments and if this had been a longer narrowing then certainly we would have considered a wider width but in this instance we consider the benefits that would accrue in improved driver behaviour and reductions in speed help mitigate the risk of the short narrowing.

"I can confirm the design has undergone a road safety audit with no issues around cycling being raised."

Cllr Lilian Richardson, the parish council's chairman, said: "We are always interested in the safety of anyone and particularly cyclists.

"Five years ago, residents of Fish Lane voiced their worries about the speed of traffic.

"A report of traffic speed and accidents was collated, the data was collated and as a result of that we were told that there

"One, which was very cheap, about £1,500 to £1,800, I think, seemed to have little effect. A second option we were offered was at a cost of about £18,000 and that seemed to have some benefits.

"In fact, when it came down to discussing it with the county council, we were told that if we went for option one we couldn’t have it because it would have no effect.

"Aldwick Parish Council met with the county council highways and signage. The purpose of the meeting was to indicate the best signs for an area requiring drivers to be more alert and to slow down because of the nature of the road and the conditions.

"I was not at that meeting but I know that councillors are very clear that they did not want the word Aldwick on the sign. But the county council highways and representatives indicated that there was no choice.

"They are not parish boundary signs.

To think that parish boundary signs can be altered that easily is naive. Parish boundary signs are where they are and have not altered one jolt.

"What really caused problems for us was the fact that when the press approached the county council highways for an estimate of the cost for the road traffic-calming in Fish Lane, they were told that it was £80,000.

"This cost was in fact untrue - the cost was nearer £18,000 and over £60,000 was used to upgrade areas of the highway in the same area. They did it at the same time as the traffic-calming measures so that there would be a reduced amount of time with the traffic being disturbed.

"I regret greatly the amount of flack that this council has taken because of this misinformation. This council does not deserve that."

Cllr Ash Patel has agreed to arrange a meeting between the Bognor Cycle Forum and Mr Osbourne to discuss the concerns about the changes.

Opengate Baptist Church is hosting its second Cherished event for women on November 11.

The guest speaker will be Merle Williams, who will be spreading her feelgood message about how women deserve to be cherished, honoured and valued.

A church spokeswoman said: "Throughout the morning, Merle will focus on bringing to light the truths that empower women not only to grasp their unique position and calling but to discover, by faith, their ability to change the world one life at a time, one step at a time."

The event will take place from 9am-4pm at the Victoria Drive church. Lunch will be followed by an afternoon of seminars and workshops or a cuppa.

Merle spent many years in the Bognor Regis and Chichester area where she ministered in her local church, worked in Christian publishing and taught at Christ for the Nations UK. Now based in Cheshire, she travels extensively with her husband, Paul, teaching and speaking.

Hallowe'en horrors at Aldingbourne Trust GHOSTS, witches and zombies joined children for frightening fun and ghoulish games at the Aldingbourne Centre this week.

THe event was hosted over the first three days of the half-term at the charity's centre in Blackmill Lane.

Activities on offer ranged from the regular programme of events but also included some extra Hallowe'en halfterm entertainment.

Louise Moore, 50, from Rose Green, visited the centre with her three daughters, Shoshanna, 29, Kathleen,

14, and Orla, nine, and her grandson, Stanley, aged five.

She said: "We always come down here, whatever is on. We come for Christmas, Easter, Hallowe'en and came to the foam party recently too.

"THe woodland walk was really good and very well done."

Stanley said: "I liked seeing all the animals. My favourite is the ducks. I enjoyed the pumpkin carving. I did the face and mummy helped me. THe face is a ghost devil.

"I liked the woodland walk. It was really

scary. We had to find little pumpkins and I found one. THen we had to give it to a man and we put our hand inside a box and we got a sweetie."

THe staff at the Aldingbourne Trust, which is dedicated to helping local businesses, communities and people with learning disabilities, entered into the spirit of the season by dressing up as various scary characters, from witches, to zombies, to Draculas.

Guests were invited to visit the farm and pet the animals, including goats, turkeys, chickens, pigs, rabbits and guinea pigs, play on the crazy golf, visit the maze, enjoy food in the cafe and have fun in the play park.

Hallowe'en fun included a spooky woodland walk with themed characters, a scary bouncy castle, pumpkin carving, treasure hunts, face painting and scary story telling.

Mary Dewane, who lives in Aldingbourne, had taken her threeyear-old grandson, THeodore. She said: "THis is the first time I have been here.

THeodore has really enjoyed himself. He has seen the animals, played on the slide and bouncy castle and has just been riding on the tractors.

"He said he really wanted an ice cream so we just had to come to the woodland walk to get one from the van! He has had a really terrific day.

"It's really nice here for the children.

Tony and Val Phillips, from Bognor, were joined by their daughter, Jenny, and six-year-old granddaughter Ella, who were visiting from Aberdeen.

Val said: "We came here specifically for the Hallowe'en attractions. THe prices have gone up a bit but it is for charity so you don't mind as long as it doesn't get too expensive. THere is something for all ages."

THe family visited the Woodland Walk three times as Ella was really enjoying it. She said: "It was a bit scary. A zombie made me scream and run. We had fun running away from him. I liked the maze too and we saw some people cheating in it! I am looking forward to seeing the rabbits and peacocks now."

Tony added: "We were really impressed with the scary walk, it was very well done."

GARDENING WITH A BANG

What a multi-talented entity a garden is. They even have the same acronyms: FIREWORKS ARE A CLASS OF E.P.D. (explosive pyrotechnic device) CHAMPAGNE IS A GLASS OF E.P.D. (effervescent party drink) Trouble is small gardens make a dodgy stage. Confined spaces lined with nasty little ‘bangers’ that make you think of a terrorist attack, explosive rockets that give owl’s nightmares mixed with reverberations that make cats and dogs hunt for holes to hide in.

Much kinder to leave the poor garden to slip off quietly into hibernation and scamper along to the village green, city park or even school playground where you can gather round the council’s well prepared bonfire. (No heretics here) Where experts will know how to light up the sky without hurting themselves, where experienced stackers will be hurling old scaffolding planks onto the top of the furnace and where, no doubt, an enterprising person will be dealing in hard and soft, hot and cold drinks and well baked potatoes wrapped in silver

But you sure as hell know the whole thing has got out of hand when we have graffiti of Mr Fawkes hybridised with an Argentinian Marxist revolutionary.

Mind you our Bonfire Night doesn’t come close to the one they manage in Spain. Valencia’s ‘Las Fallas’ is the mother of them all.

Starting on the15th of March and going on for five days they throw a firework fest that makes our own effort look like the cremation of the unknown budgie.

Think of what a week of that would do to your garden.

Family fun at Regis Centre CHILDREN from across Bognor Regis were treated to plenty of enjoyment at the Family Fun Week at the Regis Centre.

A wide range of activities were on offer throughout the half-term week for children of all ages.

They ranged from wonderful shows like Crafty's Creepy Castle, Circus Skills and Magic Show and The Wizard of Oz,

through to animal displays with owls and ponies.

Helen Jennings, from Bognor Regis, visited on Monday with her two-yearold son, Liam.

She said: "This is the first time Liam has had his face painted. He sat so still I am quite shocked.

"I found out about this week through a friend of mine so I came along today

as I wanted Liam to see the ponies.

"We will definitely return tomorrow as the owl display has just got to be done."

The centre also held workshops with history-type dramas, arts and crafts and a special Hallowe'en themed one.

Also on offer was face painting, drawing clubs and a Hallowe'en disco.

Elisha Middleton and her two sons, seven-year-old Tyler, and Harry, five, attended after she saw it advertised on Facebook.

She said: "The kids love it here. It's free and great for the community.

"There is something here for everyone - all different ages of children.

"I work in a school so this is my time off as well and it is something good to do without breaking the bank before Christmas."

Tyler said his favourite things were the Hallowe'en features. He said: "I like the Hallowe'en decorations. I like creepy stuff."

` Parking changes MOTORISTS who use the residents' parking scheme in Bognor Regis could be paying on bank holidays.

West Sussex County Council has proposed removing the exemption on holidays for charges in the spaces.

The scheme - or controlled parking zone - covers a host of roads around the town centre.

A county council spokesman said: "Charging on bank holidays already exists in the area of Bognor Regis where visitors are most likely to park, such as on The Esplanade.

"Having consistent restrictions across the zone would eliminate any confusion of where charges apply, with the same signage throughout.

"Many shops are now open on bank holidays and a potential issue with free parking is that spaces can be taken from early in the day, making it harder for shoppers to find spaces.

"Introducing restrictions will also make it easier for those residents staying at home on bank holidays to find spaces for their visitors."

Residents are charged £41 for a parking permit to park in the zone and £83 for a second permit. Permits for nonresidents cost £200. Short stay pay and display parking is 90p and 50p on Marine Drive West.

The proposals also involve changing the layout of parking bays in roads like Glamis Street, Sudley Road and Walton Road to add six extra parking spaces.

New chapter for town's blind lovers of books f Enjoying the fun at West Park Café

Pretty in pink for charity fundraiser at park's cafe CUSTOMERS of an Aldwick café were spoilt for choice when it raised money for Breast Cancer Awareness.

As part of Big Pink Day last Friday, West Park Café was transformed into a pink haven dedicated to raising money for the charity.

Ann Hancock, who runs the café, was pleased with the £301 raised. She said: "It's been such a fabulous day.

We've been busy non-stop. There were people queueing up at 8.30am to come in.

"Lots of regulars have paid us a visit, as well as new faces.

"Breast Cancer Awareness is such a worthy cause, I'm so grateful to the owners of the café, ISS Lifestyle, for letting us do this."

As well as selling cakes donated by customers, there was a raffle available, a game of pink bingo and the chance to win a huge bottle of Champagne.

Regular customers Diana Wooldridge and Arlene Wilmers enjoyed the treats on offer.

Diana said: "They've made a really nice effort.

"I'm glad it's about raising awareness of the cancer in women and men as it affects both."

Arlene agreed. "It's always really bright and friendly in here but today is even more so.

"We were disappointed when the café closed earlier this year. Now it's running again we love coming here."

BLIND and partially-sighted book lovers around Bognor Regis have been urged to share their liking for literature.

A new reading group for the visually impaired has been started by townbased charity 4Sight with the library.

Its first meeting last week was attended by a handful of readers. The second session has been arranged for 10am on November 24 in a second-floor room of the library in London Road. Those who go along can talk about a book they have just read and share their opinions.

Shirley Buck, the group's leader, said: "This is a good chance for book lovers to

read and discuss the books they like.

"I've always loved books ever since I learned to read. When I started to lose my sight because of dry age-related macular degeneration, I had to turn to the RNIB and their talking books.

"I would not be without them now.

They are my lifeline. I love talking books and I love talking about books.

"This group is a place where people can exchange ideas about authors and subjects as well."

She said she would attend 4Sight's tech group, which met at the library yesterday, to find out more about how

modern IT could help visually impaired people read more easily.

One of those at the first meeting, town centre resident Iain Lackie, 64, said: "I hope the book group gets going.

"It will be good to get a chance to talk about books as a group in the same place, rather than doing it over the phone."

The range of equipment available allowed blind people to keep up to date with the latest bestsellers, said Mr Lackie, 64, who has retinal blastoma.

"We used to have to wait a year for books to be adapted for us. Now, all the versions are available at the same time."

On November 30, Chichester University student Jess Miller will discuss a brief history of North Korea and what is means for people who live there and those who want to escape the regime. Donations made at this talk, North Korea – Escaping the Regime to Liberty, will contribute to Liberty in North Korea and Amnesty International, who will also speak.

Argentinian wine is Andes choice for a bargain buy Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

BACK to Chichester this week and Friday night culminated in a pulsating performance by Iron Tyger returning in great splendour to the Chichester Inn and regaling the packed audience with rock music par excellence!

Suitably buoyed by this experience, I duly wended my way to my nearest Aldi store with the express intention of seeking out perfectly palatable white wines for minimal outlay.

I was indeed, most successful in this quest, locating two whites retailing for the princely sum of a mere £4.49!

The first one came from the Pardon My French range in the form of a Gastronomy Gascogne, a decidedly fruity Côtes De Gascogne from the south-west of France.

This wine has an initial elderflower taste which develops into a lemony tang and resembles a Sauvignon Blanc and would make a most affordable picnic wine!

Highly quaffable and nicely balanced!

My second white wine selection for the same competitive price was that of a Vignobles Roussellet Sauvignon Blanc.

This light, lemony treat has an elegant, grassy citrus nose and palate and mineral

notes complementing balanced acidity and is my white wine bargain of the week!

My final white wine selection, priced at a mighty £5.49, was that of an Aldi Exquisite Collection 2016 Touraine Sauvignon Blanc. This wine is refreshingly crisp, decidedly citrussy with hints of freshly cut grass and a touch of sherbet and retains a lingering citrus taste and represents very good value for money.

Incidentally, for a mere outlay of £10.99, the Monsigny Brut Champagne is a most under-priced Champagne and merits your attention for reasons I have proffered in a previous column.

My choice of red wines not exceeding £7 began with a Paul Mas 2016 French

Malbec. Paul Mas has a fine reputation, so I had no hesitation in sampling this Malbec from the Pays D'Oc and was not remotely disappointed! Ripe berries and plum flavours to the fore, soft tannins also and a hint of liquorice with a nice lingering finish make this wine a good buy for just £5.99.

Returning to the Exquisite Collection, I was able to procure a 2017 Uco Valley Argentinian Malbec from vineyards at altitudes of between 900 and 1,300m against a spectacular backdrop of the Andes.

Here the days can be hot, but the nights can be chilly and contribute to a juicy, aromatic Malbec. Moreover, this wine has

been crafted by none other than Gustavo Bauza, a man of some repute, and this wine has pretty aromas of soft fruits including mulberries and blackberries.

Medium-bodied, this wine commands respect for £6.29.

Equally priced at £6.29, the 2016 Heredad Del Castillo Ribera Del Duero from Aldi's Exquisite Collection exuded black fruits and cherry flavours and is a Spanish wine able to compete with much Rioja.

My red bargain of the week is an old favourite of mine, namely the 2016 Wakefield 80 Acres Shiraz Viognier from

Method

INGREDIENTS • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon cold butter • 4-1/2 teaspoons maple syrup • 2 teaspoons cider vinegar • 5 to 6 tablespoons cold milk

FILLING: • 2 tablespoons butter • 3 cups chopped, peeled apples (about 3 medium) • 1/4 cup maple syrup • 4-1/2 teaspoons sugar • 1 tablespoon lemon juice • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 4-1/2 teaspoons cornstarch • 1 tablespoon cold water

South Australian provenance. At a bargain price of just £5.99, this wine has an intense aroma of lifted spice accompanied by dark blood plums and hints of vanilla with cherries dipped in dark chocolate - a sensational medium-bodied wine!

My final red selection was that of a 2016 Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot - a blend of dark and red fruits with plum flavours to the fore, firm yet soft tannins and savoury notes.

This wine is well-rounded and somewhat silky and at £6.99 a good buy given its quality - à la prochain!

1. In a large bowl, mix flour and salt and cut in the butter until crumbly.

Gradually add vinegar, maple syrup, and milk, gently stirring with a fork until dough holds together when pressed.

Divide dough in half and shape into disks, wrapping in plastic.

Refrigerate for 1 hour or overnight.

2. In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.

Stir in apples, lemon juice, maple syrup, sugar, and cinnamon. Bring to the boil. Cook until apples are almost tender, about 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally. In a small bowl, mix cornstarch and water until smooth; stir into apple mixture.

Return to a boil, stirring constantly; cook and

stir 1-2 minutes or until thickened.

Remove from heat. Cool to room temperature 30 minutes.

3. Preheat oven to 350°. On a lightly floured surface, roll each portion of dough to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut with a floured 3-1/2-inch pumpkin-shaped cookie cutter. Using a sharp knife, cut out pumpkin faces from half of the cutouts.

4. Place about 2 tablespoons filling on each of the uncut pastries. Moisten pastry edges with water.

Place remaining cut-outs over filling. Press edges with a fork to seal.

5. Transfer to greased baking sheets. Bake 2224 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove from pans to wire racks. Yield: 10 mini pies.

INGREDIENTS • 1 cup butter, softened • 1 cup confectioners' sugar • 1 egg • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 teaspoon almond extract • 2-3/4 cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1 teaspoon salt • Red decorating gel • 1/2 cup sliced almonds

Frightening Fingers

Method 1. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar. Beat in the egg and vanilla and almond extracts.

Combine the flour, baking powder and salt; gradually add to the creamed mixture. Divide dough into fourths. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes or until easy to handle.

2. Working with one piece of dough at a time, roll into 1 inch balls. Shape balls into 3 inch x 1/2 inch fingers. Using the flat tip of a table knife, make an

indentation on one end of each for fingernail. With a knife, make three lines in the middle of each finger for knuckle.

Looking in to the natural ways to reduce puffy eyes AS WE make the transition from summer to autumn, our skin naturally starts to lose some of its glow, but our eyes and the surrounding skin do seem to suffer more than any other place on the face.

If we are tired and run down, the first place this shows is around the eye bag area, or the colour of the whites of our eyes.

I have recently endured a long haul flight, and it really does make a difference to that way your skin looks. I think it took me at least two to three days to feel back to normal, so the following information is going to help you if you are experiencing dark puffy eyes for some reason.

There are plenty of reasons for puffy eyes and dark circles, some of which are late nights, drinking or smoking. But there are many other reasons for this puffiness to appear, such as allergies, poor diet, an overly salty diet, insomnia, chronic sinusitis, genetics, and even working too hard, spending long hours staring at a computer screen.

Unfortunately, sometimes-plain old genetics are to blame for dark circles. While there is nothing you can do about genetics, you can take some steps to help eliminate those red, swollen eyes and lessen dark circles.

If the eyes were the windows of the soul, wouldn’t it be great if those windows had nice curtains?

But alas, for a host of reasons, our eyes and their immediate surroundings can be quick to show signs of stress and exhaustion.

And aside from wanting one’s eyes to look nice, white and shining brightly, tired puffy eyes simply just don’t feel or look great.

There are all kinds of very expensive over-thecounter beauty treatments for eyes, but why don’t you firstly consider some more natural approaches as a first line of defence against puffy and/or dark, tired eyes? Some are novel, some have been used

bags over your eyes and leave them there for 10 to 15 minutes.

2. Chamomile tea This natural remedy is a classic one. Has it been proven by science? Not exactly, but chamomile is reported to have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties and subjecting your eyes to a chilled tea bag gives the benefit of a cold compress as well.

Method: You can brew up a cup of tea, remove the bag, chill it, and let it rest on your eyes. It’s very simple really.

3. Raw potatoes This one's a well-known one, too, it’s like cucumber slices, but with raw potatoes. Clearly raw potatoes are not as glamorous as raw cucumbers – and their starchy juice is not as pleasant as the fresh scent of cucumber, but people swear by them for reducing puffiness and minimizing dark circles.

Slide or grate raw potatoes, place them in cold water and refrigerate until chilled. (Alternatively, you could leave a potato in the fridge.)

Method: Recline your head and place the cold potato slices (or small shredded piles) directly on your eyes – leave on for 15 to 20 minutes.

4. Sliced cucumbers I’ve always attributed the power of cucumbers to the cold-compress factor, but it’s possible that there are antioxidants at play, which are thought to reduce irritation.

Apparently, if puffiness is accompanied by

irritation, home remedies like cucumbers or chamomile tea can help reduce the inflammation and swelling. Cucumbers have powerful antioxidants and flavinoids that are thought to reduce irritation.

And they need to be chilled for a reason, as cold cucumbers or tea bags also work in part by the cooling effects of evaporation, and are best applied for five to ten minutes.

Method: slice, refrigerate, and place on the eye area for 5 to10 minutes. That’s it!

Remember that lifestyle is key. Here’s the one nobody wants to hear and here's what to do.

Eat less salty food, drink more water and less alcohol, don’t smoke, do exercise, don’t skimp on sleep. Yes I know, it’s the same story, but if fresh bright eyes are important, these steps will help. Plus, they are better for overall health.

Green tea will work best in this instance, but black tea will also work. Green tea has more antioxidants, which are the active ingredient here, but chamomile tea will also work well as it has calming, soothing compounds.

Method: Soak two teabags in hot water for about three minutes, and then allow the tea bags to cool to room temperature. You can drink the tea while you are waiting! Now lie down and place the tea

Community News & Views THIS is the latest in a regular series of columns by the Aldingbourne Trust which will cover the start of a new era for its work.

AS YOU can see, there has been huge progress at our Aldingbourne Trust build!

The second floor concrete slab has now been poured and with the roof steels now in place for the first time, it is possible to see the true outline of the conference centre, pictured below.

The blogging team certainly saw a busy site with over 20 construction workers on site daily keeping the build on track.

The steel works are now fully complete, enabling the scaffolding to be set up around super structure.

Installation of the structural framing system of metalwork vertical studs between the concrete frame and main steel frames to enable the cladding panels to be fitted and the fixing of the composite cladding panels has also begun.

Away from the building, groundworks are ongoing with a 38 tonne excavator on site digging out the 4m deep drainage soakaways.

The blogging team were very lucky to visit Aldingbourne Trust during their summer events. It has been a hugely successful summer for the trust, with more than 7,000 visitors coming through the gates to enjoy a range of exciting activities, from Splash About to Reptile Day. These activities not only support the local community by offering families a chance to enjoy a day out together, but also help the trust to provide an even better service for its supported adults.

Back in September, we all came out of our comfort zones and raised money for the trust when we took part in the Dragon Boat racing event, pictured below. We all took Chichester Watersports by storm...teams were excited, outfits were sorted and the competitiveness was running high.

Amiri Construction, Milton Lodge, Support Workers Direct, Number 73, Outreach and Creative Arts, MAKE at Aldingbourne Enterprise, Lightfoot Lawn, Gig Buddies Portsmouth and Central Office raced against each other to win medals and the cup! Noah's Ark (Amiri Construction) were the ultimate winners - well done guys! But the winners of the day were all the people we support - getting involved and having an amazing day! Thank you to everyone who sponsored and supported us While the charity is making every effort to ensure the Aldingbourne Country Centre run by the trust continues to offer all its activities to a high standard, we do ask our visitors to bear with us during the development. GUITARIST virtuoso Richard Smith will be the next performer at Bognor Regis Music Club.

Richard, pictured above, has performed thousands of times and has become renowned worldwide for his mastery of his instrument and his knockout entertaining shows.

Music club chairman Chris Coote said: "I am delighted to welcome Richard to our club as part of his extended UK tour.

"He has a prodigious talent and an extremely engaging manner with his audience, and I am sure his style of music will appeal to all tastes."

He will play a programme that goes across the fingerstyle guitar board stylistically. It will range from Scott Joplin piano rags like The Entertainer and Easy Winners to the Jerry Reed instrumentals, East Wind and Mr Lucky.

He will also play tunes by The Beatles such as Day Tripper and Lady Madonna as well as

Focusing early on with the fingerstyle guitar of Chet Atkins and Jerry Read, he began transcribing classical music such as Sousa marches for the guitar before he moved on to jazz, the gypsy style of Django Reinhardt, bluegrass, ragtime and the blues.

Now living in the USA, his flawless technique has earned him numerous awards such as the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship title in 2001.

His concert will take place at the club's concert room at 2 Sudley Road at 7pm tomorrow.

ARTIST Elizabeth Baldin will paint a landscape with farm buildings in a pen and wash at the next meeting of Chichester Art Society, pictured below.

The workshop will take place next Thursday at the Basil Shippam Centre in Tozer Way. Doors open at 9.30am, with notices at 10am and the event from 10.15am to 12.15pm.

Elizabeth trained at Bristol Art College where she qualified with a BA (Hons) in graphic design. She is a member of the Reading Guild of Artists, the Society of Floral Painters, Wokingham Arts Group and Woodley and Earley Arts Group.

She is able to work in most media. Much of her work, especially commissions, is very detailed and accurate which she says is time-consuming but very rewarding.

To loosen up and counter-balance this, she also paints loose ink and watercolour wash studies of flowers and animals.

She has also taken part in life drawing classes on a regular basis for many years.

The subject on November 16, when Soraya French visits for an evening meeting, will be a beach scene in mixed media.

Doors open at the Basil Shippam Centre at 6pm, with notices announced at 6.30pm and the event from 6.45pm-8.45pm.

Soraya is an international artist and author who works in watercolours, oils, pastels, acrylics and mixed media with a variety of subject matters such as musicians, cafe scenes and African market scenes among others.

Many of her subjects are travel-based, including people in everyday life situations. Light and colour are the two important elements in her paintings together with semi-abstract passages with a sense of ambiguity.

Soraya is a regular contributor to the UK's leading art magazine, The Artist. Her articles vary from reviewing products to a four-part series about subjects such as colour, finger printing, use of acrylics and mixed media.

The focus will switch again on December 7 to a snowy landscape in oils using a pallet knife for the visit of Sonia Bacchus for a morning meeting. Doors will open at 9.30am, notices will be at 10am and the event will last from 10.15am12.15pm.

Sir NOT CONTENT with trying to delude Bognor Regis over their 'linear park' proposals, Arun District Council is now trying to deceive us by producing false figures in justification.

You reported their unnamed spokesman's claim that sweeping away the gardens we already have will result in 305sq m of extra space. Bognor Regis Civic Society has carefully measured the area and this claim is wholly and mischievously untrue.

The truth is their proposals will result in the loss of 1,146sq m of garden and play space, not to mention the loss of dozens of mature trees and plants.

They also try to claim that mixing cars parking with children playing is of little consequence, and that, somehow, a pathway and narrow grassy strip will stop a toddler chasing a ball into the path of a car. This is dangerously naive and Arun is playing with people's lives in order to gain space for profit-making flat-building.

Denise Vine, of Arun, claims there will not be less parking, but once again the numbers show who is telling the truth. At present, we have 209 spaces, yet the maximum they offer is 155-200. Bognor Regis desperately needs more parking, not less, but what it does not need is two more massive blocks of flats creating an additional wind tunnel to the one we already have at Queensway.

The uses suggested for the 'new' gardens could all be sited on the present gardens without the corporate vandalism they propose, and any existing problems could be solved with a little modification and proper supervision.

Bognor Regis people have already said NO to Hothamton flats in Arun's consultations and the council would do well to listen for a change.

Time never stands still at town's Clock Walk A range of developments have occupied the High Street site THIS week we are going to take a look at a specific area of Bognor Regis High Street, and some of the well-known shops that have been associated with the area known today as Clock Walk. Originally, this site consisted of several shops with accommodation, which is not so different from what is there today.

It was composed of three premises, numbered 7, 9 and 11 High Street. The first one we shall look at is No 7, which was owned by the family of Tate, a name which became well renowned and one we have to thank for many of the constructions in the town, such as The Esplanade, the Arcade and others.

In the census of 1841, a Thomas Tate was operating at No 7 as a cabinetmaker, upholsterer and undertaker, employing 14 men. As the years progressed, numerous businesses occupied this premise, such as Ernest I Richardson, who was a builder and contractor in 1912 and years later another builder’s merchants occupied the site in the 1930s, namely Brookes.

The next property was No 9 High Street, which was occupied from 1872 to 1970 by one family, that of Hawkes, a name that was synomous with specialist teas and coffees.

In 1912, the shop front advised that they provided 'High Class Groceries' and also 'Wines and Spirits'; the advert concluded that

they were 'The oldest local Grocer'.

Finally, Arthur Cox, who operated a local dairy, occupied No 11 High Street, which was originally named Melbourne House, in 1880. His local dairy connection then led to the formation of a dairy on the site, which was transferred to Wingates Dairies in the 1920s, where it remained until its closure in 1930. These premises then remained empty for a number of years until Gilbert Boys, Ironmongers, took it over.

However, during this time a new company arrived in the town, which was to expand and become a well-known name over many years.

In this case, we are talking about the family firm of Olbys who originated from Penge in London where they started in 1878. Following many expansions of their business in London, they decided to open a branch here in Bognor in 1927.

Olbys' first premises was a lock-up shop on the corner of Gravits Lane and Hawthorn Road where today we have the Co-op supermarket.

In 1928/9, they acquired a wharf at Bognor station, which comprised a shed for the storage of cement and the manufacture of breezeblocks. Within a year, a small timber merchants in the station yard closed and Olbys decided to move into timber.

timber they used was grown locally in Slindon and was used for all the repairs needed for bomb-damaged homes. In 1955, they were to receive their first shipment of timber direct from Finland, which arrived straight into their yard at the station and wood was soon arriving regularly from Finland and Sweden.

Following the expansion of the business in 1932, a new showroom was built and opened in Hawthorn Road and, by 1940, the adjoining Briggs Garage was acquired for storage.

Unfortunately, this was almost immediately requisitioned by the army for the housing and repair of tanks.

In 1939, Olbys had also taken over two railway cottages situated in the station yard into which they extended their timber business. To build their shop, wooden joists were used that had been purchased from the recently demolished Craigweil House in Aldwick. In 1954, the Bognor branch of the company became independent from the Penge branch.

However, with the fifth generation of the family working here, it continued to be a ‘family business’ and with their quality and reliable service that is perhaps one of the reasons why they thrived.

Having bought No 7 High Street in 1941, their expansion plans continued with the purchase of No 11 by 1954 and the acquisition of No 9 in 1972. With this final deal, they amalgamated the premises into the one department store that many of you will remember.

Olbys in the High Street became a wellknown landmark and shop for all our needs, with its 18 departments, providing a comprehensive range of goods under one roof, making shopping a real pleasure. Their

advertising continued, 'You are also able to relax in our comfortable coffee lounge'.

The name of Olbys became synonymous with service, and their shop provided a wide range of services, much more than any of our major stores today.

Their range covered electrical goods, toys, gifts, and linen alongside their glass, china and cutlery departments.

The company provided an extensive delivery service of their building, DIY and timber associated provisions around West Sussex.

In 1978, the company published a booklet providing an insight into their 100 years of value and service, which included photos of their various departments as well as the many staff who had remained with them over the years.

But four years later, in June, 1982, came the shock announcement from the directors the store was to close because of inflation, heavy competition and a lack of support from shoppers. The store finally closed on September 1, 1984, causing 21 full and 26 part-time staff to be unemployed.

The family shop was demolished to general sadness. Eventually, the current Clock Walk was built, complete with the clock that used to hang outside Olbys.

It was a series of small shops but today consists of two outlets fronting the High Street - a coffee shop and a charity shop.

Above the ground-floor outlets are a number of well appointed flats and apartments, but how many people now or in the future will remember those trades that have occupied this site which contributed to the town's development?

City Angel Volunteer (Chichester) – City Angels City Angels aim to bring a calming presence to the city streets and help anyone in need. They are 66 volunteers, mainly from local churches, who walk around the city centre streets in teams of 6-8 every Friday and the first and last Saturdays of each month, from around 10pm 2am or later. City Angels carry rucksacks with basic first aid kits; water bottles; a dustpan and brush to sweep up broken glass etc.; flip flops to give out to protect bare feet from glass on the streets; and wet wipes to help clean up anyone who may have been sick. City Angels carry radios enabling communication with each other and with police and door security staff. They offer free hot drinks from a mobile coffee van, and generally assist anyone in need, in whatever way they can.

They also have an ‘Outings Programme’ for fun and social days out.

Fast-starting Chi romp to a half- PostSport century win against lowly visitors CHICHESTER RFC remain in promotion contention after they burst out of the starting blocks to rack up a bonus point victory at home against lowly Thurrock.

Chi have started the season strongly in their bid to bounce back from last summer’s relegation heartbreak.

The visitors, with just one win all season, were no match as the hosts ran in four tries within the first 24 minutes to build up a lead which was unassailable.

By half-time, Chichester were 38–5 to the good and the only disappointment for the club’s coaching staff will be how Thurrock were allowed to earn parity in the second half, despite having one man sent to the bin, with both sides running in two tries each.

Easing off aside, this was still a dominant 50-17 win for Chichester and certainly a day to remember for young winger Cameron Hopkins, who scored a hat-trick on his debut, including completing the rout and giving the hosts the final say in the scoring stakes.

Fly-half Henry Anscombe also earned plaudits for the pivotal role he played in Chichester’s blistering start to the match.

His accurate kicking set up the first two scores before line breaks from the ten position laid the platform for two more quick-fire scores as Chichester took full control.

The club’s own Roger Gould praised Anscombe’s 'outstanding' performance of vision and all-round skills.

Despite the testing wind conditions served up by storm Brian, six of the game’s 11 tries were converted.

Chichester will look to emulate their flying start this Saturday when they travel to midtable Chobham as they try and keep pace with Medway and CS Rugby at the summit.

Bognor RFC, meanwhile, claimed their first away win of the season in Hampshire One with a rollercoaster 25-35 win at Ellingham and Ringwood.

The visitors were pegged back three times and even trailed 20-18 midway through the second half before finding the resolve to clinch the win with a late try from Ben Burns.

A David Sweeney drop-goal finally opened up a gap which the hosts could not overturn to earn that first win on the road.

TWO Regis schoolgirls have a spring in their step after confirming their places in the national league trampoline finals.

Izzy Hauxwell and Rosie Budge will be going for gold when they get the chance to perform against the best in the country at the Lee Valley VeloPark at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London at the start of December.

The two-day event, beginning on December 2, will see medals handed out in trampoline, synchronised, DMT and disability disciplines.

The talented youngsters, who are members of the Dragonflyers Trampoline Club, based at the Westloats Lane school, are no strangers to success with Izzy, competing in the 13-14 age range, already attaining national final medals while Rosie, in the 11-12 section, has claimed glory on the international stage.

The Dragonflyers have even more reason to cheer with the news that national development silver medallist and international finalist Anya Johnston also qualified for this year’s league finals alongside

last year’s gold medallist and international medallist Sofija Kalnicenko, leaving coaches hopeful of adding even more silverware to the club’s impressive trophy cabinet.

The club, which was founded 11 years ago, had its first national finalist in 2004/5 and has grown in strength ever since; sending seven competitors to world championships only last year.

With such success, unsurprisingly, the club has become extremely popular with youngsters keen to try out trampolining.

Dragonflyers recently set up a recreational section and due to popular demand the club is extending the number of these sessions available.

DARTS: Team Legends had the eyecatching darts in the week three results of the Friday Benevolent Darts League but still ended on the wrong end of a tight battle.

Gary Blackwood from the Legends impressed with 17 and 24 dart legs and team-mate Connor O’Hara hit a maximum but they were edged out 1211 by Aldingbourne Mavericks for whom Ben Lubbe also hit a 180.

Meanwhile, Darren Hayler’s top darts were also in vain as his 115 out shot, the highest checkout on the night, was not enough to prevent Pagham Cricket Club beating his Richmond Rebels 14-8.

Ian Kewin also finished in style with a ton out shot to help Newtown C to a 12-9 victory over Wheatsheaf.

DARTS: The Legends had better luck in week seven of the Tuesday Double-In Double-Out League as they thumped Neptune 16-4.

Again, it was another of their team that caught the eye with Darren Rich finishing with a 24.44 average.

Gary Williamson started one of his legs with a bang and an impressive 142 but he could not prevent The Neptune from going down to a heavy defeat.

In total, there were impressive 14 tonplus doubles to open up the legs on a night of high quality darts in Division One with Rob Collins of The Legends (120), team-mate Ben Marley (102) and Dave Mitchell of Newtown Raiders (100) all finding their groove to start with the same three figure opening twice on the night.

The triple twenty bed took a peppering too with five players all squeezing in a maximum including Ben Marley and Micky Rowland, of The Legends, and Adam Judd, of Friary Arms, which helped his team to a comfortable 15-6 win over Old Barn Owls.

Trish Kidd, of Cabin Cruisers, hit a maximum in a losing cause as The Wheatsheaf went on to win 12–9 while James Bartley also hit a 180 but ended up on the losing side as his Hoffmeisters lost 14-6 to The Hunston Club.

Jim Robinson finished a leg in The Hoffs' 16–7 win over Newtown Raiders with an impressive 105 to claim the highest out shot on the night.

Weakened Pagham dumped out of cup by struggling hosts

City's chance to seal deal CHICHESTER City’s hopes of another successful FA Vase run have been given a boost thanks to a favourable home draw.

Miles Rutherford's side will play their first fixture in this season’s trophy, after being given a bye in the first round, against Kent-based Deal Town at Oaklands Park on Saturday, November 11.

Deal lifted the cup in 2000 but currently lie only 12th in the Southern Counties Eastern League Premier Division and have only won once on their travels this season in six attempts.

Manager Rutherford told Chi City's website: "We're delighted with the home draw. We know it's going to be a tough game but we will be prepared.

"Hopefully, we will get a few more supporters through the turnstiles for this cup tie."

The Lilywhites enjoyed a run to the last 32 in the Vase last season and will be hopeful of staying in the completion beyond Christmas again this time around.

Before they are back in cup action, Chi will be hoping to regain some of the momentum of an unbeaten September

in the league as they see out a stuttering October with a home fixture against out-ofform Eastbourne United, who languish in mid-table after winning only one of their past eight league matches.

Chi opened up a threepoint cushion in third place at the weekend after beating United’s cross-town rivals Eastbourne Town in a fiercelyfought contest at The Saffrons.

Defender Ellis Martin was the day’s hero with his firsthalf strike sealing a precious three points which may prove to be invaluable at the end of the season.

A gutsy defensive performance saw a resolute Chichester keep a clean sheet against an opposition attack who had scored 13 goals in an unbeaten run of six games coming into the crunch fixture keeping quiet their star man, Liam Baitup, who had bagged a goal a game during their hot streak.

The win puts Chi City just a point behind the joint top leaders, Haywards Heath Town and Peacehaven, who are on 28 points. But Chi City have the better goal difference, though they have played two games more.

THE LIONS endured a fruitless trip to the capital after they were dumped out of the Buildbase FA Vase in the first round away to Southern Counties Eastern Premier League side Erith Town.

The hosts had struggled at home all season with five defeats in front of their own supporters already, including an FA Cup loss against Burgess Hill Town.

But injury-hit Pagham were unable to make it a Sussex cup double, trailing 1-0 at half-time and any ideas of a comeback were dashed with three more goals after the break.

After the second heavy cup defeat in a week, following the 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Crawley Down Gatwick in the Peter Bentley Cup, Pagham will look to build on Tuesday’s battling draw with East Preston with a trip to high-flying Eastbourne Town tomorrow.

Pagham took the lead in the midweek fixture with a 16th minute goal from Dan Simmonds against relegation candidates East Preston but couldn’t hang on for all three points.

The home side equalled through Hayden Hunter after 63 minutes for a result which leaves Pagham in mid-table and the hosts just above the bottom three places.

Selsey can't snap out of losing Ne SELSEY took a first-half lead against promotion-chasing Lingfield at The Lair but could not hold out and saw their losing streak stretch to four games.

Jake Goulding had given the visitors the lead with a tidy volley in the first half and Selsey could consider themselves unfortunate they weren’t an extra goal and man to the good before then.

Home goalkeeper Olly Moore was lucky to get away without serious punishment for a reckless slide challenge outside the box early on.

The Seals held on to their lead into halftime though Lingfield had shown their intentions by striking the woodwork from two set-pieces.

The home side were back level early in the second half after Tom Cowell in the Selsey goal flapped at a corner under pressure to give home striker Richard Wetton his 16th, and probably scrappiest, goal of the season.

Wetton scored again with less than an hour on the watch, this time with a low shot from the edge of the area, after Selsey had gifted possession in their own third.

Selsey had further cause to bemoan the officials after strong appeals for a penalty were turned down following an ungainly lunge by a Lingfield defender.

Wetton clinched the match for his side and the match ball for himself in the 74th minute, reacting first to a loose ball after Cowell had bravely come out at the feet of an onrushing attacker.

His triple had come in less than 20 secondhalf minutes and allowed his in-form team to pull further away from Selsey, who have now not won in the league since September 5.

They will look to put that statistic right when they travel to Oakwood FC tomorrow.

Sidlesham remain among the pacesetters in Division 2 after a clinical win away to struggling Lancing United.

Davidson Mendes-Borges and Harry Gregory bagged the goals from midfield for The Sids as they maintained their unbeaten start to the league season and kept pace with table-toppers Roffey.

The pair meet at Sidlesham Rec this Saturday in a crunch fixture.

Bosham, among the chasing pack hoping the pair cannot maintain their form all season, put their feet up at the weekend after Storm Brian did for their cup match at home to Alford.

They will hope the rest will do them good when they travel to Rottingdean Village tomorrow.

Chi Ladies are up for the cup after waiting CHICHESTER City Ladies have had an extra week to prepare for the long trip to Devon for the League Cup after the fixture was postponed last Sunday.

The first-round tie against Plymouth Argyle Ladies will take place at 2pm this Sunday at Elburton Villa's ground in the Haye area of Plymouth, some 180 miles from Chichester.

It was put on hold last weekend as storm Brian battered the British coastline.

Argyle had a bye into the first round while Chichester romped past West Ham 4–1 in September’s qualifying round.

The two teams are separated by just one point in the FA Women’s Premier League Southern Division so a close encounter is on the cards when they meet.

City’s four cup games last season yielded 29 goals so there promises to be plenty of action to reward the fans for their patience in waiting for the fixture.

In the league, they sit comfortably in midtable, while Argyle have made a good start in the south west division one.

The development squad did get a runout at the weekend despite the blustery weather and won a five-goal thriller away to Ashford Ladies by the odd goal.

Rachel Bush, Hannah Reed and Amber Beaven, on her return to the team, bagged the goals to secure an enthralling win.

They will look to make it three games undefeated when they travel to Bexhill United LFC on Sunday with kick-off at 2pm.

THE ROCKS have turned to the Continent in their search for a striker who can fire in the goals to move them out of relegation danger.

Bognor fans will be licking their lips at the prospect of seeing 6ft 4in German targetman Ferdinand Takyi don the green and white after the club made a surprise swoop for the striker who was aiming to impress further up the Football League pyramid.

The tall German has real European pedigree, having played in the Latvian top flight with FK Spartaks as well as in the Europa League.

The striker's record also shows he knows where the goal is, having bagged 13 goals in 14 appearances in the German equivalent of the National League South with FC Oberneuland last season.

His previous experience in England includes a stint playing for Banstead Athletic in the Ryman League South while most recently he has been on trial for Football League sides Grimsby Town, AFC Wimbledon and Yeovil Town, as well as turning out for West Bromwich Albion's under 23 side.

The club had been hoping to have their signing ready for the visit of Chippenham Town last weekend but missed the registration deadline.

The squad has also been bolstered by the return of Connor Tighe who has joined the

club on loan for a second time - on this occasion from fellow strugglers Whitehawk who he only joined in the summer.

It was a case of two in and two out this week with striker Jimmy Wild, who has left in pursuit of more first team action having not made a start for the club all season, and leftback Kristian Campbell returning to parent club Bromley after a successful month’s loan.

A statement on the club's website said Wild's desire for playing time was understood.

"He will remain registered with Bognor, and it is hoped Jimmy will be able to return at some stage in the future," it stated.

The Rocks will hope Takyi can help snap their three-match losing streak in October when they make the long trip to face Truro City tomorrow.

Their hosts have also not tasted victory this month but are still sitting pretty in fifth and with a game in hand on two of the teams they are chasing.

Injury and illness ravaged-Bognor, who could only muster three substitutes on the bench, went down to a battling home defeat to Chippenham Town last Saturday.

The home side were 3-0 within 53 minutes after a 14 minute scoring burst from the visitors but battled to the end with Ibra Sekajja netting a late consolation.

Rocks hope quiet autumn helps AS THE clocks go back, this is normally the time of season where the Rocks begin to prosper.

Notorious slow starters, the Bognor of recent seasons take time to click - often saving their best form for the months running into Christmas.

This time round, however, the chance to build momentum is going to be limited.

After tomorrow's long trip to Truro City, the Rocks have a relatively short trip to Crawley Town in the Sussex Senior Cup on Tuesday (7.45pm). That trip to the Checkatrade Stadium, though, ends a quiet October for the Nyewood faithful, a month where Bognor have just played four matches.

November then arrives, a month which sees the Rocks have just three matches scheduled after the rearranged National South match at Oxford City planned for November 14 has now been pushed back.

While time off can be a blessing for a team with a small squad, giving a chance to nurse it back to full health, it also hampers any chance of new signings settling in.

Rocks fans will be hoping this quiet autumn is a chance to regroup ahead of a long winter ahead.

SO AFTER doing so well in the third qualifying round of the FA Cup away to Jamie Howell’s Eastbourne Borough, everyone was in high spirits and hopes were good to have a chance of making the first round proper for the first time in over 20 years.

It wasn’t to be at Oxford City.

I was very disappointed after this loss. I was one of the first back on the coach - I couldn’t get out of there quick enough!

It wasn’t just the loss that left everyone frustrated, it was the performance as a whole.

But you can’t win them all.

We still have the FA Trophy competition and we know we always have a chance at earning some much needed prize money in that competition too.

It’s rather ironic that Oxford drew Colchester United away in the next round - the exact same football league club we would have played back when Jason Prior missed two penalties against Wealdstone some years ago. History repeated itself.

It was also revealed shortly after this game that we had been drawn to play Crawley Town away in the Sussex Senior Cup. It truly is a balancing act this season, with cup football, in my opinion, often getting in the way.

League football is the bread and butter, and then cup football is the added bonus. The Sussex Senior Cup is for pride and we usually do very well in this competition. Getting Crawley so early might be a blessing in disguise, though?

On the positive side, new signing Ibra Sekajja has impressed in his first two games. He scored on his home debut against Chippenham Town at Nyewood Lane this past week. Unfortunately we lost this one against the Chips, with an improved display in comparison to the Oxford game. Physically strong and quick in attack, the visitors were 3-0 ahead deep into the second half before Ibra’s 85th minute consolation.

Despite this loss, young Tommy Block deserves a mention. For a player so early in his career, he is undoubtably improving week by week.

With Dan Beck currently on holiday, it is Tommy that has really stepped up and his calm head and assured play is a real benefit in front of the defensive line.

I felt we started really well in this game and in the first 20 minutes we really should have taken the lead.

Then the visitors were very good in the middle part of the game and ultimately were more clinical. Luck played its part in the first goal, I have to admit.

In the final ten minutes or so Bognor came back into the match but it turned out to be too late.

There has been more talk about the managerial situation.

In my view, right now, the best man to carry things on is Jack Pearce. He understands we need more players, but it is so hard to find those willing to come down to the south coast and, even if he manages that, they often want expenses paid and a large wage for this level.

All we have is the sea to the south and, therefore, a small catchment area for players.

So, luckily, we have brought in Ferdinand Takyi from Germany of all places. I think a lot of credit goes to Jack for his contacts. Also - if you are a fan of the Rocks, why not become a scout?

I know we are looking at more midfielders and other free agents who are in training who might be good additions.

I know the management team are always welcome to possible suggestions of local talent who might just make the grade. So let's just wait and see. Let’s get behind Jack and the boys - they want to do well and we know they can perform on their day I think with Ibra and Ferdinand now in - we have a rather intimidating attacking threat, with the likes of Ollie Pearce and Jimmy Muitt as well.
