Concerns over fuel poverty

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk MORE people in the area are classed as being in fuel poverty, a survey has shown, with many struggling to keep their home at an adequate temperature.

Two years ago, Chichester District Council carried out a study to assess the condition of the housing stock in the

district.

THis report found that the district has double the national average for the number of homes experiencing excess cold, across the rented and private sectors. It showed that a total of 5,780 households in the district are defined as being in fuel poverty. And 7,068 households are suffering with excess cold.

Cllr Jane Kilby, the council's cabinet

member for housing, said: “I think people were quite surprised.

“Our district is regarded as being fairly well-off and I don’t think the idea that people were living in very cold conditions had ever occurred to anyone.

"At that point we knew it was important to put something in place to help tackle this serious issue and help improve the lives of residents experiencing these problems.”

As a result of this report, councillors invested £327,000 over five years and launched the Chichester Warm Homes Initiative. THe scheme is for residents on low incomes, and pays for them to have an efficient heating system, loft and wall insulation installed in their home.

Cllr Kilby added: “So far, the scheme has really made a difference to those who have taken it up."

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk THE chief executive of Highways England has been invited to attend the next A27 meeting as the community looks for the best solution to the heavily congested road.

As reported in The Chichester Post, both West Sussex County Council and Chichester District Council decided against developing a major scheme in the current round of funding.

Instead, they voted to look at a scheme for delivery in the second Roads Investment Strategy period, which runs between 2020 and 2025.

THe ‘Build A Better A27’ initiative was launched by West Sussex County Council and supported by Chichester District Council following the Secretary of State's announcement in March that the project would be cancelled.

THe letter to Jim O'Sullivan, signed by council leader Louise Goldsmith and the cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, Bob Lanzer, said: "It is the county council’s hope and preference that Highways England work with the local community and key stakeholders to develop and promote a scheme for delivery in the RIS2 period (2020-25).

"We were much heartened by your acknowledgment in your letter to Gillian Keegan MP that such a scheme is more likely to have local support and there is also the likelihood of “a more refined outcome that delivers enhanced user, community and environment outcomes".

"THe county council recognises that there are risks associated with developing a scheme for inclusion in RIS2, notably that this will mean competing for funding with other schemes at a national level.

"However, as there was an expectation that the majority of the A27 Chichester scheme would have been delivered in the RIS2 period, it is considered that this risk is outweighed by the risks associated with attempting to deliver a scheme which was unacceptable to much of the local community."

THe letter also said that the council recognises that small scale improvements will need to be delivered in the short term to mitigate the impact of new development.

THis includes signage in the summertime and addressing traffic flow.

THe letter added: "We have put in place the building blocks to develop and promote a scheme for inclusion in RIS2 and our next step will be to meet with the ‘Build A Better A27’ community group to firm up the timeframe and scope for the community-led work.

"We will work with them to engage the support of independent highway consultants so that the group can, taking account of their key requirements, explore possible solutions for the A27 Chichester. THe county council will make funding available to support and commission this work."

THe letter went on to say that the council hopes to arrange a meeting with Mr O'Sullivan to discuss the communityled work and he was invited to the next meeting.

Warning as eight jellyfish are spotted washed up on beach DANGEROUS jellyfish have been spotted washed up on the beach.

Chichester District Council received a report from a member of the public that eight jellyfish had washed up on the beach at East Bracklesham Drive.

THe council's foreshores team went down to investigate and confirmed that they are Portuguese man-of-war jellyfish.

THey removed them from the beach, but they are keeping a close eye on the situation in case more of them do appear.

In a statement, a spokeswoman at the council said: "THe main bathing season is over, but we would urge surfers and people who still swim in

the sea at this time of the year to be extra careful when in the water.

"If you spot this type of jellyfish, we would advise that you leave the water and report the sighting by contacting us on 01243 785166.

"THis type of jellyfish can cause a reaction which in extremely rare cases can be fatal.

"Reports of Portuguese man-of-war jellyfish near our coastline are very rare, but usually occur earlier in the year.

"We know there have been recent reports in places such as Cornwall and Wales.

"We will continue to closely monitor the situation."

Nursery marks its 25th year with birthday celebrations

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk IT WAS back in October 1992 that a mother and daughter team opened their own nursery in Chichester.

Now, Welcome House is celebrating its 25th birthday.

THe nursery, in Grove Road, is run by Barbara Stanley and Victoria Baldwin.

It grew quickly in popularity and has since grown into a successful business, employing 13 staff and caring for more than 90 children a week.

Barbara said: "When we first started, there was no Ofsted and no formal curriculum and we had the freedom to follow our own learning journey with the children.

"We have seen so much change over

the years in education and ideas have come and gone, and it is this constantly evolving process that makes working in the early years so interesting."

THe nursery has been consistently rated as good and was rated outstanding in its last three inspections.

Victoria added: "With all the changes that we've experienced, the one thing that has remained constant is that children learn best as they play and need a fun, challenging and interesting environment in which to do so.

"It is always lovely to hear from past pupils to know how they are getting on and to celebrate their successes.

"Our children have gone on to be artists, firefighters, musicians, doctors and teachers for example and we've even had an Olympian. We like to think we may have played an early part in laying those foundations for success."

Dinner in aid of flower fest THE Dean of Chichester, the Very Rev Stephen Waine, welcomed 160 guests from across Sussex to a fundraising dinner in the Nave of Chichester Cathedral.

THe dinner launched sponsorship for the cathedral’s spectacular Festival of Flowers, planned for 2018.

Guests included the Duchess of Richmond, the High Sheriff of West Sussex, Lady Emma Barnard and Lady Helen Broughton.

THe famous British designer and businesswoman, Emma Bridgewater, also attended the event as patron of the 2018 Festival of Flowers.

Details of the 80 arrangements which will interpret the festival theme ‘THis Earthly Paradise’, some as large as 20 feet long and 12 feet high, were shared with guests.

Emma said: "I feel a keen sense of anticipation already for that moment when you step into Chichester Cathedral to find it mystically transformed with the scent, colour and beauty of 50,000 flowers."

Chichester Cathedral’s Festival of Flowers attracts 15,000 visitors and has raised approximately £1m towards the cost of restoration work at Chichester Cathedral over the past 20 years.

Next year will be the 12th Festival of Flowers. Funds raised from the event will support the re-covering and restoration of the cathedral’s High Roofs, a major project which is expected to take four years to complete.

Exhibition at city museum THE brutal history of the infamous Hawkhurst Gang will be brought to life at THe Novium Museum.

From THursday, November16, the exhibition will showcase the untold stories of local smugglers and their victims in the Chichester district.

Visitors can find out how the Hawkhurst Gang smuggled contraband along the coast and committed some shocking murders. THe gruesome ends of many local victims will be featured in the exhibition, including William Galley, a customs officer; Daniel Chater, a witness to one of the Hawkhurst Gang’s murders; and a local man from Yapton who was violently assaulted for allegedly stealing tea.

THe Hawkhurst Gang finally met their match at the Chichester Guildhall in 1749 where the ringleaders were tried, convicted and sentenced to execution.

THeir bodies were displayed in gallows across the district as a warning to others. THe exhibition also looks at the crime and punishments smugglers faced at the time.

THe exhibition will feature a set of objects from THe Novium Museum’s own collections, such as a cutlass, a smugglers talisman and copper printing plates which tell the story of the Hawkhurst Gang’s raid on Poole Customs House.

Villagers thrilled with fast internet

BY RUTH SCAMMELL ruth.scammell@sussexpost.co.uk RESIDENTS in the village of Nutbourne, near Pulborough, are enjoying the benefits of superfast broadband at home, work and in the local pub.

THe newly available fibre broadband services were installed with investment from the Better Connected partnership between West Sussex County Council, the BT Group and central government.

Despite presenting an engineering challenge, the body of the village, which stretches along a winding main street, now receives access to speeds of more than 30 megabits per second (mbps).

UK regulator Ofcom defines superfast as speeds greater than 30mbps.

Residents living closest to the broadband supply can gain access of up to 80mbps.

Brian White, chairman of Nutbourne Residents’ Association, said: “Slow broadband used to be a constant topic at our meetings as people grew frustrated.

“Now, since the new services have gone live, we don’t talk about broadband as a problem in the village anymore.”

THe broadband services are provided through a new fibre broadband cabinet positioned outside of the village, and connected to the exchange at West Chiltington.

A popular meeting place in the village, THe Rising Sun Inn, is now offering free wi-fi to diners and drinkers.

Landlord Regan Howard said: “It’s

early days but we hope the wi-fi will mean people enjoy their visit here even more and maybe make a point of calling in to make use of the fast connection.”

Meanwhile, local couple Frank and Erica Riddle are now finding it easier to communicate with family and friends far and wide.

Frank said: “We have friends worldwide and a son in Japan with a grand-daughter so we can’t pop round to see them.

“We need a good broadband connection for modern communication via Skype, FaceTime and photos."

Local businessman John Wellard has also described the improved speeds’ positive impact on his work.

He said: “High speed broadband is making a huge difference to working from home.

“I write reports and road test articles for a national motor club magazine which requires high definition images. Now, I’m able to send images in seconds."

Up to now, the Better Connected partnership has enabled high-speed broadband access for 67,000 homes and businesses countywide.

County councillor Bob Lanzer, cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said: “We’re delighted to have made it possible for the majority of the county to enjoy high-speed fibre broadband services, by building on the commercial roll out by suppliers.

“We’re still pushing further and want to reach an extra 7,000 premises countywide by the end of next year. We are being ambitious but believe this is achievable.”

Environmental project is a real eye-opener for pupils

BY KELLY WICKHAM kelly.wickham@sussexpost.co.uk CHILDREN from primary schools in Chichester came together to attend an environmental project.

Chichester High School hosted the E.Y.E Project's second Eco Summit annual event last Friday and invited primary schools including Boxgrove Primary, Tangmere Primary Academy, East Wittering Community Primary and Compton and Up Marden CE Primary.

THe E.Y.E. Project - Eco Young & Engaged - was established in 2008 by Tim Loughton, M.P. for East Worthing and Adur, in a bid to bring local schools together to focus on caring for our planet.

He said: "THis project teaches children in a fun, educational way and they leave begging their parents to do more to be environmentally friendly.

"THe children in primary schools are far more switched on.

"It is normal practice for them to recycle, switch the lights off when they're not being used or to have a shower instead of a bath.

"THey will grow up knowing if they do their bit and everyone does their bit then things will be better."

Pupils were able to browse interactive stands, and attend fun and engaging environmental workshops run by various Chichester and Southern organisations including; the South Downs National

Park Authority, WWT Arundel, Weald & Downland Open Air Museum, and the West Sussex County Council Waste Prevention Team.

Helen Pattinson founder of Emsworth based chocolatiers Montezumas ran a workshop with THe Southern CoOperative to teach children about how far food travels and the importance of palm oil affecting the orangutans.

Lois Lutman-Pauc, nine from Boxgrove Primary School said: "I really like the bicycle stand. You ride on the bike and light up the lights.

"It was hard work. I learnt that if you leave the lights on for too long you waste electricity.

"I'm going to tell my parents about pollution and orangutans because they aren't going to be here in ten years.”

Kim THornton, Boxgrove Primary School headteacher said: "Bringing the children here today is more about raising their awareness and how they think.

THe children leave feeling more knowledgeable and we can build up on that in the school year."

Mayor of Chichester, councillor Peter Evans said: "I think it's really good bringing young people together to educate them and getting ideas back from them.

"If we train young people then they start training adults."

Beverley Harper, Education Session Leader from the Weald & Downland Museum said: "THe workshop I am doing

shows how our ancestors did things in the past with clothes and what we can learn from them. Everything was fit for purpose and recycled all the time.

"THe way the resources are at the moment, we have a lot to learn. A lot of children said they do sew and repair but it's not like previous generations with darning socks etc.

"THey have a very different mind set so its things we can do to try and change that.

"THis can only come with education and getting them to think that we have problems with landfill and these are problems for the future.”

I could only wish their was an E.Y.E Project in every corner of Sussex.

"THe children are hungry for the knowledge and this project gives it to them. We need to build upon their burning desire."

Project officer Clare Sutton said: "THe 125 eco warriors taking part in the day were excited, engaged and enthused about the environment.

"THey were keen to share details of the great eco work that they are already doing in their schools during the event assembly, and they left the day keen to share what they had learnt with their families, friends and communities."

Autism tips LEADING experts have spoken at a conference to help parents, carers and professionals learn more about the anxiety felt by children with autism.

More than 130 parents, carers and professionals gathered in Crawley for the West Sussex County Council’s autism and social communication team’s conference - Anxiety through the Autism Lens.

THe conference heard about new advanced techniques in looking at social anxiety, managing anxiety and developing self-resilience.

Keynote speakers included Dr Sebastian Gaigg - senior lecturer in psychology at City University London, Dr Laura Cockburn, from the Wing Centre for Autism, and Dr Louise, Neil from the Centre for Research in Autism and Education.

Richard Burrett, cabinet member for education and skills, said: “As well as helping parents, carers and professionals to find out about new ways of looking at anxiety in autism, we also want to increase the understanding of this among our residents in West Sussex.

“Awareness is far greater than it has been in the past but I would encourage more people to think twice when they see a child throwing a tantrum in the supermarket or question why someone has become withdrawn from a social situation.

“Support is available via the county council for parents, carers and professionals so I would encourage them to visit our website and the local offer website to find out more.”

Help those on city's streets

THree friends are hoping to find somewhere safe to sleep this winter with the support of City Angels volunteer Julia Hixson.

Darren Brown, Julian Challis and Edward Abernathy have slept on the streets for years and are now concerned for the cold months ahead.

Julian, 34, said: “Last winter Darren and I were sleeping out in the snow.

"We have asked for help from the council but it isn’t happening quickly enough. It feels as if we’re falling through the cracks.”

Darren agreed. THe 42-year-old said: “We are always hungry and cold in the winter. It’s such a difficult time.”

Chichester’s annual Stonepillow event, THe Big Sleep Out, held earlier this month, raised a staggering £24,000 for the charity, which provides hostels and support for the homeless community.

But Julian said: “Unless people sleep in a doorway every night, they don’t understand."

Darren added: “Last year we were sleeping in a car park during THe Big Sleep. If we were to ever sleep outside the cathedral we would get moved on. At least give us a chance.”

CEO of Stonepillow, Geoffrey Willis, described THe Big Sleep Out this year as “a great success.”

But he added: “I am aware that the

numbers of homeless people are rising dramatically across the country and we are looking at how we can meet that growing demand. THere is a crisis and we are aware. We are currently working on the Bognor Regis hostel which will provide four extra beds there."

Darren has been sleeping rough in Chichester for almost three years – currently the longest period of homelessness in the city. Having come into contact with asbestos while working as a builder, he suffered chronic lung failure and emphysema, which led to his unemployment and current situation.

“I try to be cheerful and positive but it is so hard every day walking the street looking for somewhere warm and safe to sleep,” he said.

THe men are concerned they may be forced to leave the city, which they consider to be their home.

Julia, who has volunteered with City Angels for over a year, said: “THese men have made their lives here. THey look out for each other as well as other homeless people.”

THe length of stay in Stonepillow’s hostel and the limitation of 14 beds was also a worry. Julia is hopeful the men might receive help from Chichester residents with a room, a holiday home or a caravan available to share.

“THis winter, these men are really relying on the goodwill and kindness of the people of Chichester. If anyone has any shelter they could share it would make all the difference.”

Trial scheme to kick off in bid to reduce litter and dog fouling A NEW council partnership that aims to crack down on litter and dog fouling will begin next month.

Litter enforcement officers from East Hampshire District Council will be patrolling the area from Wednesday, November 1, as part of a trial scheme to reduce litter and dog fouling.

THose caught dropping litter will receive an on-the-spot fine of £80, and this reduces to £60 if it is paid within 14 days. THose who do not clear up their dog’s mess will receive an on-the-spot fine of £100, with this reducing to £75 if it is paid within 14 days.

If the fines are not paid and a case goes to court, the maximum penalty for littering is £2,500 and £1,000 for dog fouling.

Councillors at Chichester District Council have pledged to crack down on litter, fly tipping and dog fouling.

Cllr Roger Barrow, cabinet member for contract services, said: "Litter, fly tipping and dog fouling all have a negative impact on our beautiful area and the public expect us to do something about it.

“THe trial will involve litter enforcement officers monitoring the city, towns, villages, parks and the seafront and fining those who are seen dropping litter or not clearing up their dog’s mess.

"We want to stress that this is not about money. THe fines are not intended to provide income for the council - they will just pay for the service."

Remote cameras are also being used in fly tipping hotspots to catch offenders as part of a West Sussex Partnership project to crack down on fly tipping.

` Cancer fundraiser A CHARITY concert is taking place to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Organised by fundraiser Ronnie Williamson and his partner, Sally, it will take place on Saturday, November 11, at the Fishbourne Centre in Blackboy Lane at 7.30pm.

Local businesses are doing their bit to support the event by donating raffle prizes.

It's the third year in a row the concert has taken place. Last year, £2,000 was raised.

People in fuel poverty urged to ask for help this winter Continued from page one.

"Having a cold home can have a detrimental effect on your health. In the winter, it can exacerbate existing health problems such as respiratory and circulatory conditions and cardio vascular disease.

"A cold home can also have a serious impact on a person’s mental health, and research has shown that this affects young people in particular.

"On the whole, cold homes affect mainly people considered to be vulnerable, those on low incomes or in rented accommodation, and often there will be a combination of factors which result in someone being in fuel poverty.”

THey run the Wellbeing Home service and work with various organisations in both districts to identify people on low incomes who may benefit from their

Emma said: “Our aim is to help people make their home more comfortable, energy-efficient, and save them money.

“Our service is for people whose home may be cold and damp, they may be suffering from health problems or worried about their heating bills.

"Our service is open to both home owners and people in private rented accommodation.”

THey can offer free energy saving devices, practical advice and information about keeping warm and healthy.

Emma added: “People are referred to us for a wide range of reasons – the cases we deal with are so diverse.

“One situation involved helping a young woman in private rented accommodation who had asthma and was receiving income related benefits.

"She was also pregnant and had another young child. She was spending a lot of money on energy and so the Citizens Advice Bureau referred her to us for support.

“When we visited, we were able to offer her lots of tips on how to use her heating system efficiently, and how to set it."

Firm helps to support pupils A PROJECT which gives schoolchildren the skills for life to look after their emotional wellbeing is celebrating the new school year with a boost from a local firm.

Natures Way Foods has teamed up with Chichester District Council’s youth engagement team to sponsor the successful Five Ways to Wellbeing project.

THis week, the team started the new round of sessions at Medmerry Primary School in Selsey.

THe project works with primary school classes and asks children to focus on five positive actions they can incorporate into their daily lives as individuals and also as part of their communities.

THe workshops are fun, but also a thought-provoking way to build confidence, improve positivity and selfesteem.

THe awards are organised by Tourism South East and judging takes into account the entry form, along with a combination of web searches, emails, telephone calls, visits and value for money.

THis year there were 143 entries.

IT WAS two years ago when I first wrote about whether landlords should accept tenants with pets in their rental properties.

I’ve just this week had to turn down a perfectly pleasant couple for a house I have available to rent because they happen to have a dog.

My view is very much that the right tenant in an appropriate property for their pet could arguably make a better tenant than those without pets! THe reason for this is quite simple. Even though 46 per cent of the population own a pet, 55 per cent of landlords (according to a National Landlord Association survey) stipulate “no pets allowed”.

THis means tenants with pets have a limited pool of properties they can rent and are appreciative towards the landlord who allows their furry friend into the property.

THey often make greater efforts to be an exemplary tenant to remain in the property as they know they have fewer options available to them elsewhere.

THis tends to lead to longer-term tenancies from tenants who may be willing to pay an enhanced security deposit or a slightly higher rent.

One threat to pet-owning tenants, though, is some potential government meddling.

You see, it was announced in the recent Tenants’ Fees Bill that security deposits may be capped at one month’s rent.

THis means pet owners won’t have the option to offer a higher security deposit, which is often seen as a good safety net and compromise by landlords. If this Bill comes to pass, it will greatly hinder many tenants with pets in finding an appropriate home.

For me, a common-sense approach needs to be taken.

If you carefully assess the owner and their pet’s conduct in their current home and put in the correct safeguards (taking an appropriate security deposit, producing a thorough inventory and writing the correct terms in the tenancy agreement, to name just a few) letting to tenants with pets doesn’t have to be a major worry.

Six years in jail for sex offender

New boss to run museum A TOP museum manager with experience at some of the leading museums both here and abroad is returning to her home city to take on the role of manager at THe Novium Museum.

Over the past 15 years, Stephanie THorndyke has worked at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice; the Cass Sculpture Foundation where she managed the London Sculpture Gallery; and, more recently, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Stephanie, who is a former Chichester High School student, has held a number of positions at the Victoria and Albert Museum over the last 12 years.

Stephanie has overseen the delivery of countless exhibitions including the critically acclaimed 'David Bowie Is' (2013) and 'Savage Beauty: Alexander McQueen' (2015).

She said: “I am really looking forward to returning to my home city and taking on this exciting role.

“THe Novium Museum has produced some brilliant awardwinning exhibitions and so I can’t wait to start working with the team to build on this success.

“Chichester is such a beautiful city.

"As someone who grew up here, it is so nice to be able to return to my home city and have the opportunity to tell the many stories from the district’s rich history.”

Stephanie will join the museum team on January 9, 2018.

He also received an additional oneyear sentence for breaching a suspended sentence imposed at Lewes Crown Court in 2015 for a fraud offence.

Detective Constable Jon Tizzard said; "Hope-Kirk will be a registered sex offender for life and was also given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) to last until further notice, severely restricting his access to children and computers.

"He was arrested in Chichester on August 16 after officers were called to Spitalfield Lane where he had gone to meet what he thought was an 11-year-old girl he had met via the internet.

"In fact, he was met by a group of adults, contacted the Stuart Hope-Kirk who police.".

A CHICHESTER man has been sentenced after attempting to meet a young girl for sex.

Stuart Hope-Kirk, 55, unemployed, of Lennox Avenue, Chichester, was sentenced to a total of six years imprisonment.

He was sentenced last week when he appeared at Portsmouth Crown Court.

Fighting for a different route A MEDIEVAL army is on the warpath in Binsted.

As reported in last week's Bognor Regis Post, hundreds of protesters held a demonstration on October 8 over the Arundel bypass Option 5A. Uniting with the villagers of Binsted, the Forest Knights are also protesting against the proposed A27 route.

The knights have been teaching nature awareness, bushcraft and practical conservation in Binsted woods for over 15 years.

Wayne Jones, the leader of the knights, declared: “The 5A route would have a catastrophic effect on our nature-based activities in Binsted woods.

"Binsted woods has a wealth of wildlife which should be kept for future generations to enjoy. If we do not resist, we’ll be forced out by traffic noise and by disruption to the wildlife.

“We work with schools and colleges sharing the benefits of the natural world outdoors with young people. Option 5A would destroy all the good things we do here.”

The Ratpack Archers would also lose out if the proposed route went ahead.

Spokesman Peter Parker said: “Our club would fold, if Option 5A is built.

“This would be a great loss to the Field Archery community - the next nearest courses are Petersfield or the Isle of

The southernmost village in the South Downs has now also made its own national park boundary marker.

It’s a giant folkloric way-marker, sculpted from green oak, in the central fields of Binsted.

Now it has also got a carving which symbolises the national park.

Andrew Lee, of the South Downs National Park Authority, welcomed the boundary marker and suggested it should carry the park’s ‘shared identity’ symbol.

Sculptor Janine Creaye, a member of this year’s Binsted Arts Festival team, and creator of the waymarker, was happy to oblige.

“I’ve carved the wavy lines of the ‘shared identity’ symbol into the back of

a bench made from an old yew tree, next to the waymarker”, said Janine.

“The lines suggest the curvaceous shapes of the South Downs. The waymarker and bench look out over a gently rolling landscape, with arms of ancient woodland stretching out around it.”

Mike Tristram, a national park member, said: “Everyone in the villages loves these new artworks. But we’re also angry that the view from this bench which carries the park’s shared identity symbol, might in a few years’ time be looking at a noisy A27 Arundel bypass on a 20-foot high embankment.

"That’s not what we feel the national park was designated for. That’s why we will go on protesting until this threat is defeated.”

` Help for hearts A DEFIBRILLATOR has been installed in North Bersted.

The potentially life-saving equipment was put in by Bersted Parish Council.

It is sited on an external wall of the council's Jubilee Parish Hall, off Chalcraft Lane. Training in how to use it was given last night to parish councillors, parish council staff and users of the hall and the adjoining playing fields.

Debbie Holcombe, the council's clerk, said: "It has been something the parish council have wanted to have installed for the benefit of the community, users of Bersted Jubilee Hall and sports field."

` Drugs charges A MAN has pleaded guilty to possessing drugs in Rose Green.

Julian Yele, 18, is due to appear at Portsmouth Crown Court next Friday for sentencing.

He pleaded guilty to possessing the class B drug, cannabis, and possessing with intent to supply the class A drug of crack cocaine.

Yele, of Church Street, Newham, was arrested on October 5 in Elbridge Crescent after being found to have cannabis on him.

Police officers suspected he had drugs concealed in his body.

A package, believed to be crack cocaine and heroin, was discovered in his custody cell toilet shortly after his arrest.

Parking is concern for new park plans SEVERAL hundred residents took the chance to find out more about plans for a new park in Bognor Regis.

The turnout to the exhibition for the Hothamton linear park proposals delighted organisers at Arun District Council and its advisors.

A total of 120 feedback forms had been given out about halfway through the four-hour event at the Regis Centre.

The initial responses are starting to be analysed by those behind the scheme before they prepare a formal planning application for it.

Denise Vine, Arun’s group head of economy, said she expected more detailed plans would be available in the new year.

“We are in the hands of the private sector in terms of taking forward the residential accommodation as to when work will start,” she said.

Planning permission would also be needed from Arun’s councillors before any changes could be made to the current site.

Members of Bognor Community Gardeners have put forward an idea for six of the structures to be placed in the centre of the proposed Hothamton linear park.

Gardeners' joint founder Kim Davis said they had joined with Bognor Pier Trust to develop the project further as plans for the park progressed.

“I totally approve of the plans for the park, albeit I think there is too much going on. Instead of all this fuss in the centre of the design, there should be half a dozen barns so it keeps its country look.

“They could be used by community groups to promote themselves and their services. I gave a presentation about the idea and people queued up to say they wanted one.

“This is a public space for everyone and there is no reason why the barns shouldn’t be installed there. Even the café could be run by a community group,” she said.

“I would like to make that park a community hub and having people from the community groups there would mean there are a lot of responsible adults in the area that would help to change the perception of it.

“Or you could end up with a fancy park with a bad reputation.”

The community gardeners have been working for up to 15 hours a week maintaining the sunken gardens between the Hothamton car park off Steyne Street and West Street for the past six years. The site has been used for drinking and has attracted negative comments, leading to it being nicknamed the drunken gardens.

The £2.5m scheme is likely to include two blocks of flats. Mrs Vine said she did not expect them to be taller than eight floors. “If they were seven to eight floors high, that would possibly be acceptable,” she said.

Mrs Vine said the proposals made a different way of using the space, including part of the sunken gardens.

“There will not be less parking. There will be flexible parking. If there is a Christmas market, the festival could be held on some of the spaces.

“There is plenty of parking in the area.

But parking worries were the prime response of town centre resident Graham Tazzyman to the proposals.

Mr Tazzyman, 72, of West Street, said: “The plans look nice but I am worried about the impact on parking.

“The parking is going to be flexible, which means it could be used for markets. If that is the case, I will not be able to park at home.

“I am also concerned about what will happen to the health centre. Both that and the parking are bursting at the seams.

“Other than that, I think the scheme is OK but there’s always pressure on parking and the health centre.”

Hotham Park Heritage Trust chairman Rosemary Warren said: “I always think it’s a great shame that everything has to be destroyed for something new.

“I’m not objecting to the park scheme because I think it’s achievable but I am concerned we will not have enough car parking, especially with Arun hoping to make changes to the London Road coach and car park.

Sylvan Way resident Mary Stanley, 81, said: “I think the plans are too busy.

I can’t see why the existing sunken gardens can’t be improved.

“I don’t feel very happy with the ideas and don’t think we need the work to be done. If they do go ahead, toilets will be needed there.”

Three illustrative masterplans were put on display by the council and its consultants to show the site's flexibility.

One includes a natural play area

with trees felled on the site, a central market square with seating to the edges, demarcated crossing points, a water play plaza, a linear rain garden, an aerodrome-themed play space, a pavilion and café, a covered performance area, an amphitheatre-style tiered grass lawn and electric car charging points.

A second possible layout includes raised grass and planting areas, a natural play area with timber from trees felled on the site, a central market square, a natural play area with water mist or fountain, a pavilion and a pavilion café and an acoustic shelter/shade structure.

There will be 200 parking spaces.

The third potential layout has a natural play area with felled timber, water mist/ fountain, central market square, large sculpture to reflect the area’s past, raised lawns with seating, a pavilion/ café, boulevard pathways, 46 parking spaces as part of the 155 total spaces and a covered performance area/acoustic shelter.

Euro-style park for town?

TREE-LINED continental market squares are the inspiration for the park proposed for Bognor Regis.

It is intended to be a location for all seasons for people to relax, exercise, reflect, play, shop, browse, eat or be entertained.

The changes are also designed to create better links between the town centre and the seafront. The existing parking provision of 215 pay and display and disabled parking bays will be replaced by 155-200 flexible parking spaces within what is termed soft landscaping.

To the right of the existing car park entrance are expected to be built two blocks of flats – one eight floors high and the other six floors – with at least one shop on the ground floor. A health centre will be included in the scheme, either the current building or a new one.

What is proposed for the site: • Markets taking place year-round, including

farmers’ markets, a slow food market, craft fairs, Christmas markets and night-time markets; • Open air concerts, performance art, street theatre and licensed street entertainers; • A place for art – either permanent public art or temporary galleries and sculptures; • A rotunda-style café, street food stalls and carts; • Innovative artisans and retailers with kiosks or stalls for start-up vendors; • Recreation with free features for all ages such as boules, a senior gym and junior/ children’s gym facilities; and • A safe place for children to play designed for the very young.

The existing site contains a children’s play area between Queensway and Steyne Street, the sunken gardens which border Steyne Street and West Street as well as the car parking and the town's health centre.

Books come to life for those unable to read f Doug Alexander presents the cheques

Puppy love with huge donations ANIMAL charities have benefited from donations received by AlphaPet Veterinary Surgeries.

The vets, who held their annual charity animal fun day and dog show in August, raised £2,441 for their two chosen charities, Search Dogs Sussex and Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

Last week, representatives from both charities visited the veterinary surgery in West Meads, Bognor Regis, and were presented with their giant cheques by AlphaPet director Doug Alexander.

(Border Collie), attended the special presentation on Wednesday.

Each charity received a cheque for £1,220.79. This year was the vet's eighth show and attended by around 2,500 people.

Doug said: "It is nice to be in a position where we are able to raise vital funds to help animals and also for people who rely on animals for support and assistance.

"Over the last four years, AlphaPet has raised over £10,000 for local and UK-based animal charities."

A LITERARY lifeline was explained to members of a Bognor Regis group for blind and partially-sighted people.

There are 9,721 books available on the service available to be listened to by those who are unable to read.

The Calibre audio library has an 18,000-strong membership, both book groups and individuals. The books can be personalised on up to ten memory sticks and CDs a time.

One of those who went along to the talk at the latest meeting of the 4Sight/ Macular Society group for the town said the service would be a real benefit.

Debbie Harper, 74, of Felpham, said: "I found it interesting. I had not heard of Calibre before and the fact you can get a little machine and put a memory stick in it and get a story is just fantastic.

"They can be read by well-known authors, who can really express themselves well. I don't need the library service at the moment but I've taken a leaflet for when I do need it."

The facts about the audio library were explained by Carol Hart, Calibre's fundraising and events officer.

She said 60 categories of books were available in fiction and non-fiction titles.

"You can say what type of book you like and who your favourite author is," she said, "and you can change your choices when you want to."

The meeting was held last Thursday at 4Sight's offices in Victoria Drive. It attracted the group's best attendance of 14 since it started in June, 2016.

Macular Society south east regional manager Stella Black said: "It's been good to see everyone here. We will be looking to hold the meetings monthly, instead of every quarter because of the interest. I'll try to arrange one before Christmas."

Moo-ving away from cow's milk to a healthier option GOAT'S or cow's milk? It’s such a controversial subject and people are passionate about their own views. I am not at all trying to persuade anyone one way or another.

However, I cannot get away from the fact that many of my client’s health issues seem to improve when you remove dairy from their diet.

It’s a simple fact that some people become more congested as a result of consuming dairy, but for others it has no noticeable effect at all.

Of course, there is the question of where you get your calcium from etc, and I believe that is a valid question. In my opinion, it's possible to get your mineral needs from vegetables, especially dark green leafy veg such as spinach, kale, watercress etc.

Milk still remains one of the most common daily drinks, but is it interesting to note that it may also be the reason why many people experience gas, bloating, and other forms of indigestion.

When you consider the average cow is given growth hormones, antibiotics, GMO feed, vaccinations, and exposed to toxic conditions, it is no wonder that many humans experience some side effect.

So is goat’s milk a healthier alternative? Goats produce about two per cent of the global milk supply; people who consume goat’s milk cite a lower incidence of allergies and digestive complaints.

What are the benefits of goat’s milk?

1. Reaction to inflammation Some research suggests that one of the main benefits of goat’s milk is that it doesn’t cause inflammation. THat’s a big reason why it is easier for people with bowel inflammation to drink goat’s milk, instead of cow’s milk.

2. Environmentally friendly Goats require less space and eat less food than cows. Six goats can exist on the same acreage required for two cows.

3. Supports metabolism

goat’s milk averages 35 per cent fatty acids, making it more nutritionally wholesome. In fact, up to 50 per cent of people who experience lactose intolerance to cow’s milk find that they can easily digest goat’s milk.

7. Rich in calcium Many people worry that they need to drink cow’s milk to meet their calcium requirements and support bone health. Goat’s milk is high in calcium and the amino acid tryptophan.

8. Anti-mucousal Cow’s milk is linked to allergies and excess mucous, goat’s milk is not. Cow’s milk is high in fat, which may increase mucous build-up. Moreover, the fat globules in goat’s milk are one-ninth the size of those in cow’s milk; it’s another possible reason why it does not produce irritation in the gut.

9. Ultra-nourishing In Naturopathic medicine, goats are referred to as bioorganic sodium animals. THey are associated with vigor, flexibility, and vitality.

Bioorganic sodium is an important element for supporting joint health. Traditionally, goat’s milk has been used to nourish and rejuvenate an overtaxed nervous system. Goat’s milk is also extremely nutrient dense. It has almost 35 per cent of your daily calcium requirements in one cup.

One cup of goat’s milk provides 20 per cent of the daily requirement of riboflavin and it’s a good source of phosphorous, vitamin B-12, protein, and potassium. In fact, Gandhi himself rejuvenated his own health after fasting by drinking raw goat’s milk.

Less toxic than cow’s milk Whereas most cow’s milk contains bovine growth hormones and bovine somatotropin, a hormone that artificially increases milk production, goats are rarely given these substances. Because of its use on the fringes of big agriculture, goat’s milk is more nutritious and less toxic.

11. May boost immune system Goat’s milk contains selenium, an essential trace mineral that supports the immune system.

THese are just a few of the many health benefits of goat’s milk. Not only does it provide complete nutrition, but it has fewer additives than cow’s milk.

On to a shore thing with wines from Dorset coast Martin Lury Our very own bon vivant gets to grips with all the best buys

GLOBAL warming can have certain short-term benefits, so with temperatures set to rise to 20 degrees at the weekend, I wended my way to Dorset, with Lyme Regis as my final destination and, as early as Saturday afternoon was able to survey Lyme Bay from the lofty heights of Hix Champagne and Oyster Bay overlooking the Cobb rendered famous

by John Fowles.

And how, pray, did I get there?

Somewhat fortuitously, in fact, as a result of meeting the delightful duo of David and Deborah, owners of Pebbles Boutique in town, a unique shopping experience with myriad individual items of clothing, and it was David who suggested the short hilltop walk to the Champagne and Oyster Bar. Sunday seemed rather opportune to cross the border to Devon to sample the latest wines acquired by Malcolm Miller at his Miller's Farm Shop emporium based in Kilmington.

My first selection was that of a 2015 Roche Mazet Pays D'Oc Chardonnay priced at £6.99, a full and soft Chardonnay, medium high in acidity

with a woody vanilla taste - to be served chilled and one that improves in the glass as initially it can taste a little sour.

For an outlay of £9.99 the 2013 Givry 1 er Cru Grande Cuvée from Vignerons de Buxy was my second selection and, incidentally, the village of Givry gives its name to one of the five appellations of the Côte Chalonnaise.

Henry 1V was an admirer, but it was not until 1946 that Givry was elevated to AOC status in recognition of the consistent quality of its wines.

THis wine, grown on east - facing limestone slopes, is truly good value for a white Burgundy and has bright aromas with citrus notes, lime in particular,

added to hints of honey on toast.

Good minerality pervades this good vintage, although the 2014 vintage is arguably even better! A good buy at this competitive price.

My final white wine choice was a 2015 Bourgogne Chardonnay Meix Grapin priced at £11.99 and of the Domaine Roland Sounit based in Rully and covering 18 hectares.

THe continental climate, with hot summers and dry autumns, enables good maturity of the grapes grown on clay and limestone soils and produces, in this case, a most harmonious wine being fresh, aromatic and delicate and a fine apéritif, à mon avis!

fruit finish with vanilla notes being all pervasive - a wine of redoubtable merit!

My final red was a 2008 Château Bernadotte Haut - Médoc which exuded cherries, eucalyptus and hints of spice and, for an offer price of just £9.99 had beautifully soft tannins with a nice dry finish - one to savour!

Round and mellow with blackcurrant to the fore, this well-made Haut-Médoc, however, would benefit from being decanted - a snip at this price!

My first red wine selection was that of a 2015 L'Excellence de Saint - Laurent Saint Chinian priced enticingly at £5.99.

THis wine exudes red berries and subtle spices and is a nicely rounded wine which outperforms its price bracket and is one to procure and savour!

My second red wine selection was the 2016 Espiègle Malbec Demon Noir which instantly restored some faith in French Malbec and at a competitive price of just £6.99 proved to be beautifully round in the mouth with mild spice and black

Hedgehog rolls

Method 1. Make the bread mixture with the butter following pack instructions. It’s easiest to use a stand mixer but not difficult to do by hand. Leave the dough to rest for 5 mins, then knead for 5 mins.

2. Cut the dough into six pieces. Dust the surface with a little flour and shape each piece into a ball by rolling it between your hand. Now make it hedgehog-shaped by pulling one side out a little and squeezing it gently into a snout. Be quite firm or it will bounce back.

3. Put the hedgehogs on a baking sheet, cover with a

damp tea towel and leave to rise for 1 hr.

4. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Using kitchen scissors (supervise younger children), carefully snip into the dough to make the spikes on the backs of the hedgehogs. Press raisins in for the eyes and push a flaked almond into the end of each snout.

5. Bake for 15 mins or until the rolls are risen and golden. Will keep for two days in an airtight container.

Community News & Views LATE summer was a busy time for Southbourne Men's Shed.

The community group of older men, nicknamed Shedders, who have stopped full-time work and want to stay active, packed a lot into September. The final main event of the month was a Macmillan coffee morning on September 28 when members were pleased to welcome many visitors to enjoy bacon rolls and coffee as well as cake.

Douglas Meany, secretary to the men's shed, said: "We had to rush out and buy more bacon as the Shedders enjoyed a rare treat even before the doors were opened to the public who kindly came along to support us."

Just before that, the Southbourne Men's Shed had hosted a buffet luncheon and meeting of more than 40 delegates from the Southern Men's Shed Network as part of its membership of the UK Men's Sheds Association.

"It was a pleasure to show off what we have achieved in the short time Southbourne Men's Shed has been running, to much praise from Shedders from all over the region," Douglas said.

September began with the usual activities in the shed, drinking coffee and chatting, with a few active souls working on small personal projects. The first trip of the month, pictured below, was a visit to Bursledon Brickworks in Hampshire before the Goodwood Revival and A Shedders Great Day Out at Weald and Downland Open Air Museum for Shedders from around the county - with help from West Sussex County Council.

Mr Meany said: "Race Night was great fun as the men's shed hosted another fundraising evening for Age Concern Southbourne. An excellent fish and chip supper added to the excitement of the night hosted at Age Concern's premises.

Kate Hogan, Mariella Fleming, Sue Wade, Sarah Selman, Sarah Garnett and Tessa Mountain - who all live around Chichester completed the 15km open water swim off the southern coast of Mallorca to raise funds for Dementia Support.

They were among an 11-strong group, with safety boats and guides, who took part in the daunting challenge, which was equal to running two marathons.

Kate said the event began painfully when the swimmers encountered fluthers of jellyfish at the start and end of their acclimatisation swim.

"However, having already raised so much money for Dementia Support and trained all through the summer, this was not about to deter us and we gamely attacked the first 4km swim up the coastline, swimming

against a fairly strong current and choppy sea," she said.

The second day saw more favourable conditions. It started with a 4km stretch, before a food and drink break and a 3km swim.

"The combined effort of which was pretty gruelling, but on we swam," said Kate.

Coldness and tiredness began to set in but the final 4km beckoned.

Kate said: "The swim itself was pretty straightforward but, as we neared the final stretch, we were once again surrounded by a smack of jellyfish, bringing our adventure full circle."

The combined backing for the swimmers came to £9,587.50 towards Dementia Support's £1.74m appeal for a new hub to provide dementia services under one roof.

Becky Stotesbury, the charity's fundraising manager, said: "I want to thank these amazing ladies for doing this incredible challenge for us and raising a fantastic amount for our fundraising appeal."

SPOOKTACULAR sights are sure to be found next weekend at a haunted Hotham Park.

The fifth Halloween event is being hosted by Rox Music and Arts on October 28 with fang-tastic entertainment and free entry.

Seals are known to frequent nearby Pagham Harbour nature reserve. The RSPB, which manages the site, says on its website that towards the end of the year is a good time to see them:

"We sometimes get visits from grey and common seals which can be seen basking on the islands, sleeping off a heavy meal."

Common seals are also present in Chichester Harbour. They can be seen anywhere in the harbour and can swim into marinas.

The common seal is Britain's largest carnivorous mammal.

Its thick, insulating layer of blubber and waterproof fur allow it to survive cold water.

FUNDRAISING was on the menu when Margaret Bamford invited her friends to Dine for Dementia, pictured below.

She and her husband, Terry, organised a buffet lunch to raise awareness about the condition and to promote the hub being developed by Tangmere charity Dementia Support.

The result was a combination of chatter and delicious food at the couple's home in Findon which raised £1,074 to go towards the charity's Dementia Hub fundraising appeal.

Rebecca Stotesbury, Dementia Support's fundraising manager, said: "We are so grateful that Margaret and Terry organised such a successful event, which brought people together to talk about dementia and let people know about services we will provide at the Dementia Support Hub in Tangmere."

Dine for Dementia is a fundraising and awareness raising event for the charity in which people in the area are invited to hold a social event - dinner, lunch, afternoon tea or coffee morning with their family and friends - for the appeal.

The fundraising seeks to raise £1.74m to renovate the Dementia Support building and officially open the hub in spring 2018.

Margaret has been an avid supporter of Dementia Support since she attended a dementia fundraising event two years ago.

A former lead governor of the Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and assistant director for social services, she has pledged her support ever since and has actively promoted the charity's work to open a dementia support hub.

The charity recognised her dedication and the expertise she could bring to the charity and invited Margaret to become a patron.

"As a patron of Dementia Support, I was thrilled to host a fun event with great friends," said Margaret. "It was a unique way to support this wonderful and much-needed new initiative for people affected by dementia in West Sussex."

The charity's philosophy is to provide an accessible and flexible service that offers care, support, advice and friendship all under one roof.

The Dementia Support Hub in Tangmere will be a unique, modern and functional hub where people can access the most up to date support, information and advice.

The services will be available for people living with dementia, and their families and carers in the West Sussex area.

MUSICAL comedy I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change is being performed in Bognor Regis next week.

The hit play is the next venture by Rox Music and Arts and will be staged next Thursday, Friday and Saturday at The Waverley in Marine Drive West.

A Rox spokesman said: "The play is about people trying to connect with each other, with the core of the situation being about two lonely characters who desperately want to attract one another.

"As irreverent and satirical as the humour is, the show owes a lot of its success to the underlying sense of compassion the characters have for each other.

"And, while you might initially think that it's all about a couple of losers, the big difference is that in each comic scene, there is always something portrayed that we can all relate to.

"The play is first and foremost a musical comedy in which the truth, and humour, of many situations will emerge and it's made to be as funny as possible - but that it's all about being human too."

Harbour was one of country's most vital ports known to Romans during invasion

By Pat Saunders, volunteer, and Portia Tremlett, museum assistant ONCE one of the most important ports in the country, Dell Quay is now a picturesque hamlet on Chichester Harbour and a favourite of Chichester residents.

THe surrounding harbour was known to the Romans at the time of the invasion, and in 2007 archaeologists excavated a Roman kiln site at Dell Quay.

THe harbour at that time had navigable channels that may even have reached Fishbourne Roman Palace.

Bournemouth University’s ‘Building Roman Britain’ project is looking at whether this site was producing building material used at

Fishbourne Roman Palace.

Post Roman records start as early as 1226 as it was the main landing place in the area and the only legal entry for foreign goods.

Produce such as wool, cloth, grain and malt went out as exports, slates such as blue slate brought from the West Country, coal, pipe-clay, Portland stone and wine arrived as imports.

In the 14th century, the quay was rated as the seventh most important port in England, and was the only landing place for Chichester.

canal from Dell Quay to the town but this was not built due to the condition that the canal could not cut through lands belonging to the Lord Howard of Effingham, making the canal unrealistic.

Instead, at the end of the 16th century, the Crown and Anchor pub was built. During the 17th century, Dell Quay was commercially very important to the city.

In 1662, THomas Miller would send a cargo to the West Country once a fortnight.

He mainly used the ship THe Francis of Chichester, which could do the round trip in five weeks.

In 1661/2 John Dyall imported 16 tons of pipe-clay, Henry Smith, 12 tons in 1674/5, and Dennis Smith, 12 tons in 1683.

In 1685, the city corporation granted a fiveyear lease for the port dues to Robert Tayer at £36 a year.

Alexander Hay further listed the customs that could be charged on goods entering the port.

From the 18th century, Dell Quay had a large square-built post-windmill which could grind seven loads of grain a week (1785-1867).

When the canal was eventually built in 1821-1822, it was too late to be viable in the long term.

Railways built in the 1840's that connected Chichester to Brighton and Portsmouth became the favourable method of transport.

By the time the First World War was over, Dell Quay’s role as the city’s port was in decline.

In March, 1920, police had objected to the

licence being renewed for the Crown and Anchor at Dell Quay.

In the deliberations at the county licensing sessions it was noted trade at the port was to all intents and purposes dead. Deputy chief constable Ellis, who appeared at the sessions, had a low opinion of the port.

However, the pub’s licence was renewed as the city corporation, which owned the quay, had hoped to revive trade.

It was noted that there were indications that trade in the harbour would be more brisk in the future as the first wheat cargo to be loaded at the quay since the war had been put aboard a steamer.

At a meeting of the corporation in July, 1922, the matter of trade at the port was discussed, and in particular whether they should contract to have steam-coal imported through the port rather than have it brought by train from South Wales, but the surveyor pointed out that the council had not provided proper unloading facilities at Dell Quay.

Instead, the quay and the harbour became more of a tourist destination and popular to small boat enthusiasts.

In August, 1925, a gale caused substantial damage to moored boats and a group effort to re-float boats led to the formation of the Dell Quay Boat Club, renamed the Dell Quay Sailing Club in 1934.

Winter ‘Frostbite’ races are held annually, and the area is used by sailing and fishing clubs. Once a thriving port, Dell Quay is now a site of peace and quiet that attracts visitors all year round.

Winners at sea and on the slopes - PostSport global success for university pair THE UNIVERSITY of Chichester is celebrating double gold after two of their students stormed to victory at sea and on the slopes.

Undergraduate Ben Hazeldine, 20, skippered the blind sailors in the GB squad to first place at the recent world championships held on Lake Michigan in the USA. Then, Zoe Karavasili won the British indoor skiing championships - despite not competing for four years due to a knee injury.

Ben, a second-year student, undertaking a BA (Hons) degree in sport and business management, acted as tactician for the winning crew which finished ahead of 19 competitors.

He said: “It is a wonderful feeling not only to reach the pinnacle of a sport I am passionate about but to hold that gold medal in my hands after dedicating so much time and effort.”

The world championships, hosted under Paralympic rules, comprises teams of four sailors including a visually-impaired helm and trimmer alongside a sighted jib and tactician.

Ben and his crew won the international competition, held across six days in three divisions based on the level of visual

impairment, with a flawless scoreline of only first-place finishes. The university student, who has been racing for more than a decade, is also part of Team GB’s provisional sailing squad for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Meanwhile, athlete Zoe, a third-year student at the university, won the national under-21 competition in the summer - her first major award of a career which was derailed by a severe anterior cruciate ligament knee injury in 2013 and again in 2015.

The 20-year-old, of the BA (Hons) physical education and sports coaching degree at Chichester, described it as a 'wonderful accomplishment'.

Ms Karavasili, who originates from Switzerland, began competitive racing at the age of seven, having started indoor and outdoor skiing at three.

She holds the UK’s number one ranking in the under-21 age group following her success at the indoor championships, which were hosted in Manchester in mid-August.

The University of Chichester student, who trains at indoor ski slopes across the south of England, believes she can build on her golden success throughout the next year.

RUGBY: Chichester RFC return to action tomorrow looking to make it six wins from seven in the campaign.

Scott Ashley's side sit third in Division One South, level on points with CS Rugby in second and four behind leaders Medway. After a blank Saturday last week, next up is a visit from Thurrock tomorrow (3pm), who come to Oaklands Park having won just once all term.

BOGNOR REGIS swimming club has enjoyed a glittering start to the season - picking up a host of medals at competitions across Sussex.

The team, based at Arena Sports Centre in Westloats Lane, have already made their mark in a range of regional competitions in the past few weeks.

First up was the County Qualifier Swimming Competition, which saw Bognor swimmers take away three medals.

The star was Amber Macrae, who won a 200m butterfly gold and 50m freestyle bronze. Leo Mitchell also took to the podium, securing a 50m freestyle silver.

At the end of the competition, Macrae, Mitchell and Logan Hickmore qualified for the next County Championships in February, 2018.

Next up was the Annual Eastbourne Swimming Club Level 3 Open Meet.

Bognor Regis Swimming Club entered 12 swimmers, who won six medals between them. Coaches were equally proud that the

day's competition also delivered 32 personal best times in many of the nine different swimming disciplines they entered.

Medals were won by: Amber Macrae (100m butterfly gold); Leo Mitchell (50m back crawl silver and 100m individual medley silver; Logan Hickmore (100m breaststroke bronze) Hannah Clarke (100m freestyle bronze) and William Pinto (100m freestyle bronze).

The club are now busy preparing for the Bognor Regis Swimming Club Open Meet at Felpham Leisure Centre on December 3.

This will also include the Santa Sprint and give members a chance to bag even more medals.

Jan Malpas, of the club, said new members were always welcome, adding: "Our excellent team of coaches will help you to learn to swim competitively or improve your swimming ability, whichever you wish to do."

Chi all at sea as Dockers end six match unbeaten away run

FA Vase hope for Pagham PAGHAM will be hoping a change will be as good as a rest as they head into the FA Vase off the back of two of their poorest results this term.

The Lions head to Kent tomorrow to take on Southern Counties East League Premier Division side Erith Town in the FA Vase first round (3pm) before a league visit to East Preston on Tuesday (7.45pm).

The trip to Crayford, which is the home of the dogs, could not come at a better time for the Nyetimber Lane side.

While their season has not gone fully the way of the fourlegged mammals just yet, joint-managers Richie Hellen and Tom Simmonds will be looking for a strong showing to kick-start a faltering campaign.

The Lions' hopes of silverware took a real blow in the last week.

First there was a 2-2 draw at home to relegation battlers AFC Uckfield Town in the SCFL Premier, a result which leaves them tenth, 12 points behind the top two.

That was followed by a 5-1 hammering at Crawley Down Gatwick in the Peter Bentley Cup, a defeat which ended the Lions' spell as holders of that particular trophy.

Tomorrow's opponents have struggled so far in the league, sitting third bottom of a competitive division.

The Lions will take heart from the fact the Dockers have just won one of five league games at home this term.

But Pagham make the trip without a number of key players who have succumbed to injury.

Their ranks have been boosted with Shay Wiggans returning to the fold from Littlehampton Town.

The defender started the AFC Uckfield match, a game which saw the Lions go 2-0 up thanks to a Scott Murfin penalty and Jamie Horncastle strike.

But, after Ryan Cox and then Callum Overton were dismissed, the Lions' nine men conceded and own goal and a late equaliser to deny them all three points.

Luck also deserted them on Tuesday when, despite dominating much of the play and creating more chances, Crawley Down Gatwick were ruthless in front of goal.

Going in 2-0 down at half time Murfin halved the deficit.

But the Anvils scored three more without reply to dish out a real hammering.

CHICHESTER City will be looking to get back on track in a true top-of-the-table clash tomorrow.

The Lillywhites head to fourth-placed Eastbourne Town (3pm) to play a side bang in form and who have lost just once in SCFL Premier this term.

Chi's preparations for the crunch match at The Saffrons was far from ideal, after suffering a 3-2 defeat at mid-table Newhaven last weekend. That loss leaves Miles Rutherford's side third, winning just once in four in all competitions. The source of the pain was Lee Robinson's hat-trick to help the Dockers end Chi's six game unbeaten away run.

Dave Herbert pulled one back for Rutherford's side in the 68th minute, his third in as many matches, and skipper Jack Lee added another late on. But Robinson's three goal haul helped him overtake Chi's Scott Jones as the league's top scorer.

Chi coach Danny Potter said: "I hope we'll put the defensive errors right and start creating more chances against Eastbourne.

We'll have Scott Jones back in the side and fingers crossed we get three points on the road again."

Hunston CC hit Anvils for six Ne

HUNSTON Community Club sailed into the third round of the Sussex Intermediate Cup, smashing six past Crawley Down Gatwick reserves.

The Hares rang rings around their opponents as they dished out a real hammering to the SCFL Premier side's second string.

Ashley Harper was the star performer, grabbing a hat-trick for the West Sussex Premier side.

He also had three assists, helping Steve Wood, Richie Boxall and Matt Noble get on the scoresheet in what turned out to be a

comfortable victory in front of a home crowd on Hunston Rec. The victory over the Anvils gives the Hares a third round tie away at fellow West Sussex Premier side Lavant on November 11.

The performance was Hunston's best of the season, with a far from convincing start leaving them third bottom of the division.

Tomorrow sees them play bottom-side Wisborough Green, giving the Hares an ideal chance to take their cup form into the league.

In the same competition both Sidlesham and Bosham were knocked out in surprising

The Sids suffered a defeat on penalties after a 2-2 draw against fellow SCFL Division Two side Cowfold. Callum Dowdell scored both of the goals.

Meanwhile, Bosham lost out in a nine-goal thriller to Forest Row, as strikes from Harry Bedford, Callum Coker, Jake Lafferty and Grant Radmore were not enough to take the Robins into the next round.

Both sides return to action tomorrow in the Division Two cup.

Daren Pearce's Sids, who are still unbeaten and sit third in the division, travel to Lancing United (2pm) while Bosham welcome Alfold to Walton Lane (2pm).

Gary Lines' team will be out for revenge after the Surrey side defeated the Robins in the league 3-2 earlier this term.

In SCFL Division One, Selsey are looking for their first league win in five as the Blues head across the border to play fourth-place Lingfield (3pm).

The Blues are just one place and three points behind the Lingers but have been in a slump since opening the campaign with six wins from seven. That poor run continued last weekend when they lost out by the narrowest of margins against Langney Wanderers at the High Street Ground.

Paul Rodgers grabbed the only goal of the game, which also saw Selsey keeper Warren Boyt sent off.

Chi up for the cup after Pompey win CHICHESTER City Ladies are heading on one of their longest road trips of the season with a spring in their step after getting one over on their local rivals.

Matt Wright's side take on Plymouth Argyle on Sunday (2pm) in the FA Women's Premier League cup.

After last weekend's match against Charlton Athletic was rescheduled, they do so off the back of a pulsating 3-2 victory against rivals Portsmouth under the lights at Oaklands Park.

That victory lifts Wright's side to fifth in the FA WPL South table, above Pompey and having lost just once in eight matches.

The victory against their south coast rivals was set up by a strong first half display. Jess Lewry gave Chi the lead on the half hour

mark, slamming home a shot from around twelve yards through a crowd of players to send the home support into raptures.

Cherelle Khassal doubled the lead shortly after with a sweet strike, only for the visitors to hit back just moment after.

But shortly after the re-start the two goal cushion was restored when Jenna Fowlie rose to head home a corner.

Pompey kept on pushing and, with time running out, were given a lifeline with a penalty.

But the spot kick was fired wide by Shannon Sievwright to the delight of the home fans.

Shannon Albuery did reduce the deficit for the visitors to a solitary goal but Chi saw out time to seal a famous win.

Rocks must ditch fear factor in hunt for first league win in ten Next Game

CHIPPENHAM TOWN (H) Tomorrow, 3pm

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce is warning Rocks fans there is 'no magic wand' to sort out his side's poor league run.

The Nyewood Lane side have struggled to adapt to life in the more physical National League South, failing to win in their past nine outings. After missing out on entering the first round proper of the FA Cup after a 1-0 loss at Oxford City last week, the Rocks now switch their attention back to the league. A first game at the Nye Camp in almost a month will see Chippenham Town visit, a side that are five spots and five points above the 19th-placed Rocks. Speaking to the Post, Pearce said: "It’s a game that we need to win, they are a midtable team like us.

"In some cases, we will have better players than them, but it will come down to the fact that they will be physically stronger than us.

We need to pass the ball better and make sure we get rid of the fear factor."

The fear factor was evident more than ever during last weekend's FA Cup clash with Oxford City. With the opponents sitting just below the Rocks in the National South table, there was a chance for Pearce's side to clinch a spot in the first round proper for the first time in more than 20 years. But a timid display followed and the Rocks were unable to find an equaliser after falling behind to a well-taken goal by Rocks' summer target Matt Paterson.

To compound the misery, Calvin Davies was sent off for two bookable offences.

That sent the Rocks on the long trip south with lots to think about while Oxford City progress to take on League Two side Colchester United in the next round.

Pearce said: "I share the same reflection as supporters, players, as anyone that cares about the club and that's of deep disappointment as our performance was not what you would expect for a game of that importance.

"I expected us to test their keeper more than we did. And. even though I'm delighted for the player, it was a very sad reflection when a 17-year-old [Tommy Block] was head and shoulders our man of the match."

Pearce said he was determined to use his four decades as a manager to steer his side out of the slump - though he warned there would be no easy solutions.

He said: "The atmosphere at training is really good, then on Saturday before the match, the passing drills we look sharp and positive which makes everyone feel confident. But the whistle goes and people go into their shell.

There’s no magic wand, we just have to keep on working."

He added: "We have done brilliantly to get here in the National South and it will be a mountain to stay there. There are no easy answers but we will work really hard to stay."

Pearce looking for two signings HE IS still looking under every stone - but Jack Pearce has warned it is proving difficult to bring in two additions to strengthen the depleted Bognor squad.

The experienced manager has been hitting the phone book hard in recent weeks to sign a physical front man and strong midfield player as his team look to make the transition into National South.

Recent weeks have seen him add striker Ibra Sekajja and left back Kristian Campbell to the ranks. But Pearce believes he still lacks the balance needed for the higher level.

He said: "We need to play to our strengths and cover weaknesses and, unfortunately, we can’t cover those with the players we have "We are strengthening but even those additions would benefit from a physically strong striker and midfield player. The whole squad will benefit with signing of two players and they are proving elusive."

The Rocks are missing James Crane and Sami El-Abd, who will be out until next month while Dan Beck is on holiday. Alex Parsons, who is dual-signed with Worthing, is also likely be out after deciding that the travel in National South is too much. Doug Tuck and on-loan Campbell are available though.

I'M WRITING this a few days after the FA Cup defeat at Oxford City. It was an extremely disappointing result for everyone, particularly as once again we came so close to reaching the first round proper Believe it or not, we all travelled up to the match in good spirits. Having played at Oxford City a few years ago and won there helped, but also their league position, the fact they were low on confidence and that it was on 3G which suits our game, we felt that things were in our favour.

Sadly, though, it wasn't meant to be - and when you see they got Colchester away in the draw it is really frustrating.

Being honest, it just wasn't there for us on Saturday.

Some have criticised the management team for the selection and substitutions but I feel that's immaterial.

I'd say 90 per cent of people who know anything about Bognor would have picked the squad and the team that played that day.

Doug Tuck was out, Sami was out, I'm out, Alex Parsons is in and out of the fold - that means there's not a whole lot you can do in terms of selection.

That means it must be down to what is being done on the pitch. At times like this, the whole squad individually has to take a good look at themselves and ask if they gave everything.

Being honest, I didn't think we deserved a replay - we didn't do enough to test their keeper. He didn't make a single save and there were a number of occasions when half chances were squandered or we missed squaring the ball to others or miss-hits. If you don't shoot and test the keeper then you're not going to score.

The good thing about us, though, is our mentality, we all want to win.

So this past week at training everyone has been working hard so we know we will be the fittest team in the league.

We've also been through the

phases of play for the match against Chippenham and I can guarantee there's no-one there who will think that we will lose tomorrow's game.

No doubt after the defeat at Oxford, there were a few people licking their wounds.

But we all know that once we get out there tomorrow that news becomes chip shop paper. That feeling comes from Jack and Dabba who take the pressure and the weight on their shoulders.

There's no doubt, though, that we owe the fans a real performance.

We need a gritty character building performance which will give us a base to kick on.

That's never easy but, in this league, if you win two on the bounce, you could easily go from 20th up into the top ten and that will be the case throughout the year.

We have far too many characters to lie down and be beaten, we will get results.

We've also got the benefit of having signed Ibra and Kris who are very good loan additions.

Doug is also back fit now which is a big boost as he has a calming influence on the match, rarely giving the ball away.

It will be good to get Sami back, too, as he is a natural leader who gets after people in the right way. We're missing his presence in the back four and the quicker we get him back the better. I think he is three or four weeks away, which is about the same for me.

The shoulder is not too bad - it's getting there, albeit still stiff, but I have got 90 per cent of movement there now.

I'm looking at about three weeks to getting back into full contact training with the team.

By the time I'm back, hopefully, we'll be back on track, with everyone scrapping for the ball and the points. We had it against Weston and for 60 minutes against Dartford let's hope we have it tomorrow.
